COVER • NEW HOME FOR THE TRUSTED NAME IN PAINT IN MOUNT GAMBIER When it comes to experience in painting and interior design, the team at the locally owned and operated Mount Gambier Paint Place has no peer. Opening its doors in the mid 1990s, The Paint Place has become synonymous with quality products and service, with Ray de Wit taking over the reins in 2008 and only building on that reputation. From architectural to industrial, from automotive to marine, Mount Gambier Paint Place can cater for all your painting needs with an expert team to guide you through every step of your project. No matter how large or small, it is your one stop shop for all your interior decorating needs.

Ray has been in painting for more than three decades and has been at the helm of the Mount Gambier Paint Place for its move from the James Street site to Commercial Street East and now to its best premises yet at 212 Commercial Street West. The new store is a bigger and brighter space and Ray has had no time to spare as he made the move, as well as continuing to run his own painting business. Angela Maynard has been the face of Mount Gambier Paint Place for more than a decade, clocking up almost seven years with each of the two owners. She boasts 23 years experience in the paint game, is a fully qualified trade painter and has a Diploma in Interior Design. Each week, Angela works side by side with several local builders to assist clients in selecting the colour scheme for their home. She has extensive colour matching experience and being a former painter means she has all sorts of tips and tricks to help you through any painting task. Automotive paint and accessories has become a huge arm of the business in recent years and Regan Lefever is the salesperson for that area of Mount Gambier Paint Place. He is fast approaching his two year anniversary at the Commercial Street West store, combining his love of cars with his role at the Mount Gambier Paint Place. He matches a wide variety of paints including vinyl paint for car interiors, truck side curtains, industrial enamel to suit light/heavy machinery, two pack polyurethane and epoxy urethane and po

A new tourism website is showcasing the Glenelg Shire to a global tourism market, highlighting the region’s important role on the Great Ocean Road touring route. The new www.iamportland.com.au site went live last week providing detailed visitor information on the shire’s key tourist attractions, business operators and food and accommodation opportunities. The site includes dedicated pages on each of the shire’s townships providing a shire-wide tourism overview. A key feature of the site is the events calendar which illustrates the region’s vast year-round activities and festivals in addition to a spectacular catalogue of images and videos, highlighting the shire’s key attractions and landscapes. The new website, managed by Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism Authority in association with Glenelg Shire’s tourism unit, is available for business and tourism operators to advertise on. The Great Ocean Road web platform attracts almost 90,000 page views each month across its nine dedicated regional sites, which includes iamportfairy.com.au and visitwarrnambool.com.au pages. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the sites were the “number oneâ€? digital page of choice for international travellers, keen to explore beyond the 12 Apostles. “This new tourism website is a one-stop-shop for visitors building their itinerary in our region. Cr Rank said. “The site makes it easy to build a journey whether it’s exploring our iconic scenery or getting out-and-about visiting our key attractions and utilising our great tourism operators. Ultimately this website is another step in our broader plan to build and strengthen our visitor economy, by increasing yield, growing business participation and creating memorable experiences that will ensure return business.â€? Cr Rank said the website would work alongside the Portland Tourist Association, Casterton and District Business Association, and Nelson Tourism Association websites providing more “clickbaitâ€? for tourists. HOMECOMING QUEEN Never underestimate the power of a tradition. When MJ Dance Studio principal Maria Slape invites a celebrated mentor to teach her students she gets them to sign the wall. As far as the dance world is concerned, there are some famous names on that wall and last week, the first ever former student added her name to that unofficial wall of fame. Symiko De Van Der Schueren returned for the studio’s 30th anniversary concerts, as well as working with students over two days and when she was asked to sign the wall, overwhelmed is arguably the best adjective to describe her reaction. “I’m really the first student to do this?” Symiko said, as Maria and other students helped hold the ladder steady as she inscribed her message to future dancers. “I had watched so many stars who had inspired me putting their names on the wall and it almost didn’t seem right that I was now doing it. I know it seems like a small thing but for me it was a special moment.” Stints in The Lion King in Australia and China, has seen Symiko live out her dancing dream and while she has also done her share of teaching since leaving Mount Gambier six years ago, she was never more nervous about mentoring a group of students as she was returning to MJ. A gap in her busy schedule allowed Symiko to make what amounted to her visit back to the city and the studio since moving to Queensland with her family and the Mitchell Street rooms still felt like home. “When I was in China, I was telling all my Chinese and South African friends how beautiful it was where I grew up and that they had to see places like the Blue Lake to believe it,” Symiko said. “I think that made me realise I really missed Mount Gambier and it was time to come home. It was an incredible place to be as a kid. I was blessed to grow up here.” Maria made contact with a number of MJ alumni to invite them back for the 30 year celebrations and when Symiko, took up the offer, Maria also suggested one of her star graduates spend some time with the studio’s current crop of dancers. “I

have taught in Sydney, Queensland, Singapore, China but coming here is the first time I’ve been really nervous,” Symiko said. “Maria was my teacher and I knew the high standards she set for us. She gave us such challenging and beautifully creative work and I wanted to give that back to the kids. I was desperate to make her proud, she was my teacher from when I was five.” So often when Symiko is asked to work with other studios, the teacher has clear parameters and a style of work in mind but Maria have Symiko a blank canvas – a work that the students will now work on for the next 12 months. “Sometimes it is hard to fit the mould, so it was great that Maria gave me creative right,” Symiko said. “I wanted to do something very me. Something people will see and know Symiko did that.” In a wonderful piece of synergy, Symiko worked closely with rising star Halle Anderson. The 12 year old was promoted to the senior troupe to work on Symiko’s piece, just as Symiko, herself, had earned those opportunities when she was Halle’s age – a mere 12 years old. The work is a Geisha piece and has been a labour of love for Symiko, who spent a mountain of time mixing the music and finetuning the choreography. “The kids were really focussed, too, which make things easier,” Symiko said. “I think when kids don’t get opportunities like this all the time, they really make the most of it. I have found it quite different working with city kids.” And while Symiko wants the steps and the moves to be on point, for her, the work is as much about the emotion. “I do think the most important part is the telling of the story,” she said. And speaking of stories, Symiko also shared a brief snapshot of her story to the senior group, offering advice to those looking to make a career out of dance. After leaving Mount Gambier, Symiko’s next gig was adjudicating in Malaysia last weekend, and then after some family time – she will be spending next month with younger sister Kiana, the first time the two have been together at home for around three years. Mid year, Symiko looks set for a Caribbean cruise ship job – something she thought she would never do but is now super keen to pursue. “There used

to be a stigma surrounding cruise ships, like you had to dance there because you couldn’t get a job anywhere else,” Symiko said. “But what they do now is amazing and only high quality dancers get the opportunities. I have to admit, going on the ship to watch Kiana (sister) was what really changed my mind. She is on stage for a high intensity one hour performance and it is amazing. I love travel and this is a way of getting paid to do what you love – dancing and travel. It is a great opportunity.” Above - Symiko (front centre) with the senior class at MJ Dance Studio. LEADERS JOIN FORCES TO ATTRACT FUNDING FOR AIRPORT Last week, Tony Pasin, Member for Barker, joined with members of the Mount Gambier Airport Stakeholders Group to progress development of an application to the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF). Mr Pasin said that the BBRF was designed to back projects that create further investment in the community. “The Mount Gambier Airport is a key strategic asset for the Limestone Coast community and a redevelopment would benefit business, tourism and residents in the region,” Mr Pasin said. “This project is a truly regional initiative with the Stakeholder Group including representatives of the City of Mount Gambier, Wattle Range Council, Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast Local Government Association.” Mr Pasin said that the lengthening of the existing runway and strengthening of the aprons, as well as expansion and upgrade of the existing terminal will strengthen our tourism and business sectors and will also provide benefits to the community more generally.

TRUCK RAISES MUCH NEEDED FUNDS The Mount Gambier Family Truck Show earlier this month raised almost $4200 in gate takings alone, not taking into consideration, the gift donations from the event, which was in its second year. PHOTO COURTESY OF STEVE RICE

AT A GLANCE

PACKED PROGRAM OF SUMMER FUN BACK FOR ITS NINTH YEAR The Coastal Connections program is back for its ninth year of summer fun, with a packed program of events across the region. Natural Resources South East Team Leader Sustainable Landscapes Tania Rajic said the program aimed to link people with the local coastline. “We want people to have fun while learning about our fabulous region, the landscape and the wildlife,” Ms Rajic said. “Coastal Connections activities are a window into this amazing area. Whether it’s an intertidal rockpool, sandy beach, estuary or a moonlit coastal lake, there’s always something new to discover.” The free program runs from

January 2 to January 14 next year, with activities at Kingston, Robe, Beachport, Southend, Carpenter Rocks and Port MacDonnell. “We have a range of activities for everyone from adventurous adults to curious kids: guided birdwatching tours with local experts, sea critter craft sessions, bush tucker experiences, snorkelling at Piccaninnie Ponds and so much more,” Ms Rajic said. The full program is available for download on the Natural Resources South East website naturalresources. sa.gov.au/southeast or you can pick up a copy at your local Visitor Information Centre. Booking is essential for most events, see naturalresourcesse. eventbrite.com to secure your place. Coastal Connections is a collaborative program between Natural Resources South East and Limestone Coast Local Government Association, funded by the Australian Government through the Limestone Coastwatchers Project. For more information contact a Natural Resources South East Coastal Connections team member on 0467 797 201.

COUNCIL WINS NATIONAL AWARD The Naracoorte Lucindale Council has received a Community Champion Award from the Garage Sale Trail - the nationwide event held every October. Naracoorte Lucindale Council was honoured for championing and supporting local resident Julie Zanol who organised a Garage Sale Trail fundraiser “Everybody’s Day Out” for

the fourth year in 2017. The event had more than 1000 reported shoppers attend and raised significant funds for cancer research. The role of council in enabling Julie and the community to be engaged was further underpinned by the media generated by council as well as council’s significant promotion on social media. Council will be supporting the Garage Sale Trail again in 2018.

NEW BUILDING UNIT FOR COUNCIL Residents will have access to more than 80 years of building knowledge as part of Glenelg Shire Council’s new building surveyors unit. Portland based building stalwart Don Sherwell has been successfully appointed as council’s municipal building surveyor for the next two years, providing long term consistency and assurance in services. Mr Sherwell will also be supported by new full-time building inspector Ross Jarrad, who has returned to the Glenelg Shire Council. Glenelg Shire Council Acting Corporate Services director David Hol said the new building team would continue to uphold the high quality professionalism. “Community members should feel confident in the level of service provision they will now be able to access - the wealth of knowledge, expertise and skill of our building team is unmatched to anywhere else in the region,” he said. Appointments can be made with Mr Sherwell between Monday to Wednesday and appointments can be made with Mr Jarrad between Tuesday to Thursday for Portland residents, and Fridays for Casterton residents.

CFA VOLUNTEERS EARN LIFE MEMBERSHIP One of John Mahony’s most cherished memories of nearly 50 years of firefighting centres on a pat on the back from a Grampians volunteer after they’d contained a big bushfire at Framlingham. For his old mate Kelvin Boyle fighting fires alongside his father Jack sticks at the top of his memory. The two volunteers have been rewarded for their long-serving, dedicated and professional service with CFA life memberships. Mr Boyle officially joined the Mepunga fire brigade when he turned 16 in the 1950s, but before that he’d been working alongside his Dad whenever a fire broke out. Now 80, he’s still actively involved in CFA group NEW HEALTH INITIATIVE SET TO START UP IN PORTLAND A new Life! Program will start in Portland in January as the local community continues to improve its health and wellbeing. The Life! Program aims to prevent diabetes, heart disease and stroke and over the past 10 years has assisted more than 150 local people. Portland District Health will start the Life! Program on Tuesday

communications. Likewise Mr Mahony volunteered for the Cudgee brigade in 1969 when he was 16 and has been involved ever since. In the past two months he’s been to six different incidents. Both men were awarded the honour last week. Mr Boyle and Mr Mahony say they are honoured by the CFA life memberships but didn’t set out looking for such recognition. “You don’t do it for awards but it’s a nice honour,” Mr Boyle said. “You never think of awards; you just go and do what you’ve got to do,” Mr Mahony said Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria CEO Andrew Ford said the professional contribution of volunteers like John Mahony and Kelvin Boyle reflected the evolving capacity of brigades to deal with changing community risks. “Our volunteers provide about $1 billion worth of service each year and contribute to the CFA’s well-established ability to mobilise huge numbers of highly trained and experienced volunteers to deal with major incidents,” he said.

SEASIDE FOOD & WINE MARKET If you are looking for something to do between Christmas and New Year’s, look no further than the Robe Food and Wine Night Market; a free community event on the Robe Foreshore on Thursday December 28 from 4pm to 9pm. The event will showcase live music, great wines, breweries and local food. Local musicians Ben Hood and Tamara Seeley will play an acoustic set featuring original and cover songs from every decade, and will be supported by popular Mount Gambier entertainer, DJ Justin. There will be children’s face-painting and other fun activities to keep kids entertained. Nicole Reschke, from Koonara Wines, who is organising the event said Robe in the festive season is such a wonderful place, and she can’t wait for the foreshore to come alive with local producers. “We are thrilled to host the Food and Wine Night Markets at Robe – what better way to celebrate the festive season than with fabulous wine, food and music,” said Nicole. “Robe’s stunning foreshore is such a wonderful place for this event.” Guests will be able to sample great wines from the Mount Benson, Robe and Coonawarra region with; Koonara Wines, Cape Jaffa, Wangolina, Woodsoak, Karatta and Norfolk Rise all participating. There will also be craft beer and handmade cider by Kalangadoo’s The Cide Project, and Cape Jaffa’s new beer

‘Cape Ale’ will be available in cans. Food producers including Robe’s Seafood & Takeaway cooking fish burritos, Stonies Fine Fast Foods by owners of fine dining Sails Restaurant, Hawaiian cuisine Hanalei Bay, Southern Hotdogs and traditional homemade Japanese Gyoza Lane dumplings will be there. This will be the sixth Food and Wine Night Market organised by Koonara wines, with similar events previously held in Hamilton, Portland and Mount Gambier. “Our first Night Market was in Mount Gambier at the Rail Lands in January

2016 and we were overwhelmed by the success – we expected around 500 people and over 2,500 people attended,” Nicole said. “The main feedback we got was how people enjoyed catching up with old friends in a fun and relaxed setting. These events are about showcasing the amazing local produce we have here in the Limestone Coast. We hope visitors to Robe over the Christmas period will come along, have a great time, and go home and share their experiences.” According to a Visitation and Economic study done by the South Australian Accredited Visitor Information Centre Network more than 66,000 people visited Robe in the 2015/16 period. This had a five year average economic benefit of more than $5million dollars to the seaside town. Domestic daytrips to the Limestone Coast in 2015/16 were almost 700,000. “It’s so important for the community to get behind and support these events, when people come along and have a great time it makes all the hard work worth it,” Nicole said. “We would encourage everyone to bring their family, a rug and enjoy the beautiful view.” Above - Jamie and Sally McDonald from The Cide Project - Kalangadoo’s craft apple cider and beer, Anita Goode owner and winemaker of Wangolina, and Nicole and Dru Reschke owners of Koonara Wines and organisers of the Robe Food and Wine Night Markets.

NEW PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT FUNDRAISER A HUGE SUCCESS Blue skies were the perfect backdrop for St Martins Lutheran College’s inaugural colour run - a fun, highly anticipated fundraising activity - with almost $11,500 raised by the school community. Two hundred and fifty five students participated in the event, running around the school oval through a series of obstacles, ducking and weaving as they were sprayed with intense colours changing their once white t-shirts into a kaleidoscope of vibrant hues. The purpose of the colour run was to raise funds for playground equipment and to have fun. The students had a say in the sort of things they would like to include in their new playground and they decided on equipment with a focus on climbing, jumping and swinging. The final decision on equipment will be taken next year after further consultation with students.

PUBLIC ART IN THE SPOTLIGHT IN MILLICENT A small group of committed Millicent residents is set to enliven their community through public art. In this Limestone Coast township, the Imagine Millicent Arts Group (IMAG) is planning its first project to be a mural on the front façade of the former Savings Bank of South Australia in the main street. The aim is to create renewed interest in the Millicent townscape, enhancing the sense of pride that local residents have of their community, beautifying a rundown but architecturally interesting building and providing another item of interest to encourage visitors to stay a little longer in the area. The theme for the mural is broadly ‘wind and water’, which capitalises on the clean natural resource landscape within which Millicent is located. However, IMAG is open to and keen to see design concepts that expand beyond these initial ideas. “We are looking for quirky, fun and interactive elements on our façade,” building owner Helen Joyce said. “Art that will encourage people to cross the road, get out of their car or off their bike to have a better view and perhaps take a selfie.” Helen is also a member of IMAG. This is the first project in a much broader and longer term strategy to stimulate creative endeavours among and for Millicent residents that will see six or more public art works established in the Millicent township over the next two years. Expressions of Interest have been called for to design and paint the old bank façade with the artist including either a mentoring opportunity for a local artist or a workshop for the broader community in their application. This is with a view to having those participants being involved in further IMAG projects and building local expertise. “Public art has the power to transform and beautify a townscape, enhance a sense of community, draw visitors to a place and expand people’s thinking and vision of what life can be,” said IMAG member Caroline Hammat. IMAG has identified that there is growing interest in the possibilities of public art in the wider community and is capitalising on this. The group hopes Millicent and the broader community will offer their support for this project and help Imagine Millicent. IMAG has created an online presence via social media platforms Facebook and Instagram and further information including the EOI is available via their website imaginemillicent.wordpress.com Above - IMAG members discuss the limitless possibilities outside the old Savings Bank in Millicent’s main street. Members include Millicent Business Community Association chairperson Lee Morgan, local artist Caroline Hammat, building owner Helen Joyce and local writer Moira Neagle.

MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR COMMUNITY CELEBRATION Mount Gambier is set to stage its 2017 community New Year’s Eve celebrations again this year, but the group that runs the event -

Mount Gambier Community Events Management - have warned it could be the last if more volunteers adn sponsors are not garnered.

“From an idea and a shared community spirit by community minded people, the original celebrations were started in 2010 with a wing and a prayer and a hope the community would support the event,” chairman Steve Toope said. “They did and they have supported the event over the past seven years.” The event is set to be staged for the eighth consecutive year on December 31 and will be the affordable, family friendly gathering the community has always wanted. “To be able to put on such an event, we rely on not only the community support but the generosity of the business community, “ Steve said. “We have been very fortunate to have a number of civic minded sponsors and supporters over the years and they have all contributed to the success of the event. Both the City of Mount Gambier and the District Council of Grant have been good supporters of the celebrations.” But with only five members of the organising committee for 2017 and a drop in sponsorship support, there are growing concerns the event might not surivive past 2017. “This will be last year of the NYE celebrations unless there are members of the broader community who wish to step up to the plate and take on the responsibility of organising the 2018/19 celebrations,” Steve said. “It is extra work to take on but it also can be very rewarding for those involved. The members of the current committee

LIBRARY RELOCATES DURING MAKEOVER

will provide advice and support to those that wish to become part of the organising committee. I believe there are people who will come forward and would not like to see the next New Year’s Eve be the last.” If you wish to become involved, you can contact Steve Toope on 0438 230 770. The 2017 celebrations will be held at Vansittart Park from 6pm until midnight.

The Greater Hamilton Library will be relocated to the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre (PAC) for the month of January to enable important refurbishment works to take place. The refurbishment, made possible thanks to $121,000 in funding from the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure program and a $40,000 contribution from Southern Grampians Council, aims to create a new and vibrant space which enhances browsing and collection accessibility for library users and improves design and layout. Works will include new flooring, mobile shelving, painting, new customer service desk, new glass wall partition, and a revised layout which includes creation of a dedicated space for creative play. The Living Libraries Infrastructure program is designed to assist Victorian Councils and regional libraries in the provision of high-quality and accessible public library facilities that support the role of public libraries in strengthening communities. Library Services Coordinator Kelly Pitt-Lancaster said staff are very excited about the works taking place and reassures library patrons that the disruption to service will be minimal. “While we understand this closure will have some impact on our community, we have planned for it to occur during our quietest period of the year to reduce service interruption for our customers and the community,” she said. “All library services will be available from the temporary site at the PAC, although there will be some limitations with reduced computer access and reduction of books available on the floor. The afterhours chute will also unfortunately be unavailable during this time. We are really excited to see work finally commencing on the refurbishment.“ Library members will have access to their accounts via the website as usual and all of our online resources will still be available www. centralhighlandslibraries.org.au The library will close for the Christmas break on December 23 and reopen at the Hamilton PAC from January 2. The works are expected to take approximately one month.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE 32... By ROBBIE TANSEL I received this email this week. “Good evening, please take the following points in response to your most recent article. Point 1: We don’t keep stuff! (Robbie’s note: I had to change the s word they had used here because it couldn’t be published otherwise.) Point 2: You are big and UGLY enough to look after yourself! Cheers Your mother and father” I don’t really know where to start with responding to this one. For those of you who missed it, last week I wrote in my article about the fact that my parents no longer hang the beautiful decorations I made for them as a kid on their Christmas tree because apparently they are no longer up to the standard they have for their decorations. I also talked about how they are abusive parents and think that now I’m forty they don’t have to parent me anymore. Something tells me things are going to be a bit awkward around the table at Christmas this year. Obviously the wardens have given Mum and Dad their internet privileges back. They lost them a few weeks ago when Uncle Scooby tried to smuggle a weapon in disguised as a Christmas bauble. I guess the other possibility is they’ve escaped again but the police normally let me know. They know that if Mum and Dad come to see me I’ll notify them rather than have to spend an afternoon listening to them tell me how disappointed they are in me. I resent the fact that Mum and Dad think that just because I’m forty that I’m able to look after myself and that their parenting duties are finished. This is really not the sort of thing I should have to be coping with at Christmas time. I can’t believe Mum and Dad couldn’t have had this discussion at another time of the year. What’s next Mum and Dad? Gonna tell me that Santa is not coming to me this year? While we’re talking about Santa, it has always seemed like such an amazing coincidence to me that my Dad and Santa like the same beer. Even when Dad changed from Southwark to West End then VB, Crownies, Carlton Draft, Carlton Dry. I wonder if Santa has ever been in jail. Anyway, needless to say I put my coloured cardboard, my textas, my macaroni, my gold spraypaint and my glitter away. No hand made card for those selfish buggers this year. They’re just going to have to have a card from the store. But I guess you don’t care about that Mum and Dad. I also won’t be giving you a copy of the photo of me on Santa’s lap! Your

prison cells will be a bit less festive without that, won’t they. I’m also not going to ask you to take me for a drive to look at the Christmas lights on Christmas Eve, even if you’re out of prison! Things are getting real, aren’t they! Something tells me that the next email I receive from Mum and Dad will be an apology. No doubt it will be an offer to buy me an underwater watch or something for Christmas as well. Well now that I’ve sorted that, there’s nothing left to say but thanks for reading this rubbish throughout the year. I hope that everyone has a wonderful Christmas. Be nice to each other. Find some time to think about other people and

make their day better. Think about all of our emergency service workers on the day by staying safe and sensible. Wouldn’t it be great if they were able to have a great day with their family, rather than having to be called out to some problem or tragedy? If you are not my mum or dad, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

Dylan Ridding has always dreamed of playing baseball at the highest level possible and he took another step in that journey last month when he debuted for the Adelaide Bite in the Australian Baseball League (ABL). Right from a young age, the former Central player, has been one of the best players in his age group, representing South Australia five times and also donning the green and gold on two occasions. Starting in the sport as a seven year old, Dylan has travelled far and wide. The family knows the road between this region and Adelaide like the back of their hand, having travelled it for trainings most weekends in season for the past decade and that doesn’t take into account, the trips around Australia to national championships, as well as his two overseas stints – representing Australia in an Under 11 team that competed in Japan in 2009, and then to the United States in 2011, as part of the Australian Under 13 team. Dylan’s introduction to baseball can be traced back to his mother Megan, who was a star pitcher and feared batter, for Wanderers. “I was always out at softball with mum and I also had a couple of mates who were playing baseball so that’s how I started,” Dylan said. And the dream had always been to play baseball professionally so despite the fact the call up as an Adelaide Bite development player only came a couple of months ago, Dylan had no hesitation in accepting the offer. “The coach sent me a message to see if I would be interested and I jumped at the chance,” Dylan said. “He had seen me playing for Sturt in the local league and wanted me to be part of the Adelaide Bite squad.” It saw Dylan relocate – he lives with a host family at the moment but is looking into branching out on his own – and it only took until round two of the ABL for Dylan to get his chance. The 19 year old was called off the bench in the Melbourne series. “I was anxious even just sitting on the bench and when the coach said he was putting me in the game I was nervous,” Dylan said. “But this is what I want to do and I have loved every minute of the training and now playing.” For the past four years, Dylan has been juggling playing for Sturt, in the Adelaide domestic competition, as well as Central, in the Mount Gambier & District Baseball League. He would play for Central Under 17 team on Friday nights and that also the division one team, if they were also scheduled for Friday night, and then head to Adelaide for State training and then division one and two games with Sturt. Ironically, it is a routine that has set the star utility up for the rigours of the ABL, which basically sees teams playing

CHECK OUT OUR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR ALL THE WEEK’S BASKETBALL RESULTS a four game series over three days most weekends. For Dylan that has been a typical weekend for some time, punctuated by a 10 hour round trip. “I haven’t noticed the difference because I have been playing so many games over weekends for the past four years,” Dylan said. The intensity of training and the very focussed nature of the Adelaide Bite sessions has seen Dylan already feel the improvement in his game. “We really work on individual skills so that in games we don’t give up extra bases when we are in the field, but when we are batting we can find the line drives and things we need to get those extra bases,” Dylan said. “It is very, very skills based.” Dylan trains twice a week with Sturt and twice a week with the Bite and then has that four game weekend. Dylan’s ability to get the job done in the field, across a number of positions, as well as having a strong game in the batting box, has earned him the call-up to the Bite and his opportunities on the ABL diamonds. “They did say they like my simple swing,” Dylan said. While on the field, things have been anything but simple, with Dylan, who has played the majority of his Sturt baseball on third base, and his Central division one baseball at short stop, has played second and third base and also patrolled the outfield. “This is exactly what I hoped it would and even more really,” Dylan said. The 2017/18 ABL season is at its halfway point with the Christmas break this coming weekend and then five rounds to go, with the Adelaide Bite suffering from a slow start to the season and sitting bottom of the league standings.

SOUTH EAST SHINES AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Three South East Junior golfers travelled to Adelaide earlier this month to compete at the 2017 Pacific School Games. Six states and territories were represented with a total of 152 players. Tilly Miels, of Bordertown, was selected to play for the South Australian Girls 17 & Under Team. The team finished fourth in the Gross Aggregate Team event and Tilly (pictured below) came fifth in the 36 Hole Individual Nett event. The Victorian girls team, with an average handicap of two, proved too strong for the other girls teams, however, the SA Team did very well with the Boys 17 & Under team finishing the week in first place. In the SAPSASA, 12 years and under team, selected players from

KENT WINS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Throughout 2017 the monthly winners of Gambier Shooting Supplies High Gun qualify for the end of year Elders Champion of Champions shoot off which was held at South East Field & Game’s Christmas event. The 2016 winner and course setter Ken Atkin set 24 challenging targets over an old style sporting layout to test the skills of the 10 competitors, with six from the South East and four from Western Victoria. Each competitor took their turn to shoot the clay targets from the four traps over the four pad layout and the pressure was on not to miss to give anyone an advantage. Jamie Dunn, Gavin Dyson and Danny Bellinger all finished with 22/24 but it was not enough to prevent Jeremy Kent, rounding off a stellar season of competition, who only dropped one target to take out the prestigious title with 23/24. MARATHON STAR HEADED TO KINGSTON TRIATHLON FROM PAGE 4 Jess is also looking forward to returning home with fond memories of the triathlon. “I have very fond memories of my Kingston Triathlon experience - the atmosphere, location, organisation and presentations after the event,” she said. “Positive memories like these are what inspire people to return to the event and also to encourage their friends, family members to join them. It comes down to the people involved with the event, from the organisers to the volunteers, supporters and participants which gives it its longevity.” The Naracoorte Toyota Kingston SE Triathlon is shaping up to be an event not to miss in 2018 with entries still open its time to get organised and training. “Hosting the Triathlon SA Club Championships will be fantastic, and we expect exciting competitions in each of the courses,” said Ali Stillwell. “Already there are a lot of people discussing who’ll be in their team and which course they’ll enter in. Triathlon SA are keen to see clubs bring as many members as possible to Kingston, and join in celebrating 30 years of holding a great triathlon event here.” Mrs Stillwell says a number of past presidents, race directors and committee members will be making their way to Kingston for the “fabulous occasion”. “Anyone coming along to compete, spectate or help on the day will have great time.” The proceeds for the Robe and Districts Community Bank Fun Run/Walk will go to the Kingston Men’s Shed for equipment and materials to support their valuable community work.
