COVER • MOUNT GAMBIER CENTRAL CONTINUES TO SUPPORT MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS APPEAL Local businesses, community groups, families and individuals are encouraged to consider those less fortunate this festive season and donate to the 2017 Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, with a fundraising target of $28,000. “The appeal provides much needed support for vulnerable or isolated members of the local community at Christmas,” City of Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee said. “Last year, the appeal directly assisted 584 families, 691 adults, 251 teenagers and 533 children with Christmas food hampers, vouchers or gifts.” All donations to the appeal are distributed through the Christmas Cheer Program delivered by the following agencies: • Uniting Care • ac.care • Lifeline SE • St Vincent De Paul • The Salvation Army Additional coordination and support is offered through the Department for Child Protection. All funds raised as part of the appeal are distributed within the local area, with demand for support greater than ever as the cost of living continues to rise. “Sadly the number of people seeking assistance at Christmas has increased by almost 20 per cent during the past five years, reiterating challenges faced by many people within our community,” Mayor Lee said.

Why support the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal: • The appeal relies solely on the support of local donors – the service is additional to the role played by local agencies and is not possible without contributions from local individuals, families, groups and businesses. • Demand for support is increasing and the service is becoming stretched - while contributions from the local community have been reasonably consistent, the demand for support at Christmas has increased by almost 20% over the past five years. • The appeal is a unique local initiative - 100% of the funds are sourced and distributed locally. The City of Mount Gambier supports the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal by acting as a collection point for the agencies. Outside any fees charged by the financial institutions, 100% of your donation is distributed among the participating agencies. Donations can be made online at www.mountgambier. sa.gov.au/christmasappeal or by visiting the City of Mount Gambier customer service desk at the Civic Centre. Any questions regarding the appeal can be made by phoning (08)8721 2555 or by emailing city@mountgambier.sa.gov.au Mount Gambier Central is proud to have played a significant role in supporting the fundraising for the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal and raising awareness of the Appeal over the past eight years.

25TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON UNVEILED Celebrations all round next year as Country Arts SA turns 25. For a quarter of a century, the organisation has shared unique, diverse and fun arts

experiences created by thousands of artists with communities’ right across regional South Australia. Kick-starting celebrations across the State is an

exciting new program that includes a wide range of arts engagement opportunities and encourages South Australians to travel outside their own region and be tourists across their state. Two such events are the Fringe in Kangaroo Island on February 20 and the world premiere of The Gods of Strangers written by State Theatre Company of South Australia’s Elena Carapetis in November. In the Limestone Coast and surrounds, highlights of the 2018 season include theatre, dance, music, digital art, film and visual arts. After a stellar performance in last year’s inaugural Fringe Festival, the hilarious women from POST return to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on March 24 with Oedipus Schmoedipus. The show takes several hundred of the greatest plays, picks out the death scenes, mixes them together with 25 local performers and serves it all up on a white set. Meanwhile, an experimental sound project and residency by Olya Dubatova and Greg Niemyer will explore the audio properties of the Cave Gardens from March 3 to 30. “Since 1993, Country Arts SA has presented 38,000 events across our State, and more than eight million people have engaged with the arts in the regions,” said Premier and Minister for the Arts Jay Weatherill. “I urge arts lovers to become tourists in their own State by experiencing the terrific lineup of shows that Country Arts SA has created for 2018.” Next year will mark the beginning of a new way of working

to provide even more opportunities for the communities the organisation works with and inspiring travel to arts experiences in other regional areas to see what’s on offer and get better acquainted with our great state. “Our history is rich with community engagement and has brought many theatre productions and art exhibitions to regional centres that would otherwise not be able to tour to these areas,” said Country Arts SA chief executive officer Steve Saffell. “As a gift for patrons, $25 tickets will be on offer to selected shows across the year - another reason to join us across the state as we celebrate our 25th birthday. Keep an eye out for the Country Arts SA Summer Guide which will be distributed across the state in early December, the first of four Seasonal, State-wide guides.” Full program available now at www. countryarts.org.au Lifestyle1 will get the thoughts on the 25th anniversary season of Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre manager Frank Morello in next week’s Lifestyle1.

National and state level sporting competitions are on the agenda for Casterton’s Island Park following a $1.46 million redevelopment at the popular sporting precinct. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank last week officially opened $800,000 worth of refurbishments to the town’s memorial Olympic swimming pool in addition to a $660,000 redevelopment of the precincts tennis and netball clubrooms. “These major works will assist the township to continue to attract state level swimming competitions and ensure the precinct is a hub for locals to exercise and cool-off this summer season. Importantly, the upgrades ensure that the pool is now accessible for all, meaning everyone in our community can enjoy the facilities,” Cr Rank said. “The neighbouring rejuvenated tennis and netball clubrooms have taken this precinct to the 21st century with a purpose built space which will assist to attract more competitors to the precinct and importantly more finals in the Western Border Football Netball League. Attracting more events and higher usage is good news for the town and the regional economy. Council is committed to working with local user groups to make the most of these great facilities to ensure they remain in demand for years to come.” The pool works include a new all abilities access ramp, new modern return system, and concrete concourse on the pool surrounds. Furthermore the pool facility has refurbished change rooms and kiosk area to improve the aesthetic and useability of the space. The precinct works were supported with funding from both the Federal and State Governments’ with support from the Community Flood Recovery Program ($133,000) and Community Sports Infrastructure Fund – Female Friendly Facilities ($100,000) and Community Facility Funding Program – Seasonal Pools ($200,000). Glenelg Shire Council funded the balance of the projects. Cr Rank praised the Casterton Sandford Football Netball Club which raised more than $20,000 towards its redevelopment in addition to support from the town’s swimming club and tennis association. Casterton-based Glenelg Shire councillor Karen Stephens said the pool continued to be a hub of activity through the summer months, hosting various kids activities and attracting school swimming competitions from across the district. The Casterton pool is open daily from 10.30am to 6.30pm, excluding Christmas Day.

Wattle Range Council is seeking public input into the future use of the Millicent parklands. Wattle Range Council has begun the consultation process, engaging with students from local kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. Students participating in a Science Technology Engineering and Maths project have been asked come up with ideas for the use of the parklands on Ridge and North terraces. Director Engineering Services Peter Halton said the students’ ideas were currently on display at the Millicent Gallery. “Council plan to undertake broader community consultation on some of these concepts for consideration in future budgets,” Mr Halton said. Council staff have recently completed remediation works to finalise the removal of the netball/ tennis courts at the western end of the parklands on the corner of North Terrace and Williams Road. The courts and associated fencing and light towers were removed and a significant amount of material carted in, levelling it for the establishment of a grassed area. A bore has been installed at the Croquet Club end of the park which services the new irrigation installed across the drain in the Domain and this will be used to provide above ground irrigation to the newly cleared area. “The new grassed area will become a ‘blank canvas’ with which we can consult with key community groups on its ultimate use or purpose,” said Mr Halton. Above (left) - Bronwyn Heffernan and Meg Figg explore the display with their children Elizabeth and Theo

WINDFALL FOR MEN’S SHED Portland Men’s Shed will receive funds to purchase a chainsaw and a hydraulic wood splitter to assist the members to cut wood courtesy of the Lewis Court Fund. The men currently rely on “borrowed” equipment and the purchase of the new equipment will ensure the equipment is well maintained to OHS standards and is more suitable for the task. The Men’s Shed carries out wood cutting and clearing jobs for private residents and organisations in and around Portland. Portland Men’s Shed coordinator Gerry Leonard said the men were thrilled to receive the funds. “To have our own equipment means we are flexible on when and where we can clear trees from properties,” he said. “We’ve been approached by Portland Golf Club to remove dead trees from around the course. This will provide supplementary income for the Men’s Shed while utilizing the skills of our members.” Portland Men’s Shed is located at 14 Hedditch Street Portland and opening hours is Tuesday – Friday 10am–1pm.

KIDS GIVE BACK AT CHRISTMAS TIME Heywood’s youngest and most generous have rallied together to support their local community this Christmas period. Staff and children at Heywood Kindergarten have collected items and goods for donation as part of the centre’s highly successful Adopt a Pensioner program, helping to support community members most in need. Glenelg Shire Council Children’s Services Manager Janine Johnstone said the program was a testament to the generosity of the local Heywood community. “The Adopt a Pensioner program has been in place at the Heywood Kindergarten since 2011 and every term the children relish the opportunity to give back to their community,” she said. “As part of the program each term the kindergarten collects donations to package together to send to the less fortunate. “These items, which can include canned food and luxury cleaning products such as soap and shampoo, are given to Heywood Rural Health which then delivers them on to community members in need.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - TIS THE SEASON TO BE DISAPPOINTED.....By ROBBIE TANSEL I need to make a few things clear. I’ve got a bad feeling that some of you think I write this article for you. I don’t. It’s for me. It is completely so that I can vent my frustrations and push my own agenda. I think it’s pretty selfish to think it’s for you. It’s about me, me, me! Let’s get that straight. With that in mind, let me tell you about something that has me pretty annoyed at the moment. My Mum and Dad no longer hang the Christmas decorations I made as a kid on our Christmas tree. Just to be clear, I’m putting most of the blame for this one on Mum. You’re off the hook for this one, Dad. This has been going on for a few years now. It didn’t take long. In fact the first time it happened was the first Christmas after all of my siblings and I had moved out of home. Mum suddenly decided that she wanted to have one of those Christmas trees you see in Better Homes and Garden magazines. You know, the ones where everything is colour coordinated, all

the decorations look like they were put on with a spirit level, and not a decoration is out of place. There’s nothing made out of bread ties, nothing made of egg cartons, in fact nothing made anywhere except in China. As you can imagine I was pretty disappointed the first time I saw it. I’ll be honest, I’m still disappointed each time I see it now. I don’t understand why she started doing it. What was wrong with all the decorations I’d made out of paper plates and toilet rolls? I put my heart and soul into throwing glitter all over them. It was really quite a kick in the guts. Essentially, my mother was telling me that my craft skills were not good enough for her gold and red themed Christmas tree. It wasn’t just that the colours of the decorations were wrong because Mum didn’t even hang my decorations that would have fit the colour theme. She was very actively deciding that my decorations were an embarrassment to her tree. That cut pretty deep. I hope at this point that some of you are starting to reach for your phones to call the Kids Helpline. Quite obviously this is child abuse. No child should be subjected to this sort of treatment. This is very similar to a month or two ago when they went off on a holiday and left me behind. Mum and Dad need to remember that when you have children, it is a commitment. You shouldn’t take that commitment lightly. When you have kids, you’re saying that you’ll put their needs first and make their happiness number one. There’s not a time frame involved. It’s a lifelong commitment. Quite clearly in this case, they have forgotten the commitment they made. This whole thing reminds me very much of people who receive puppies or kittens for Christmas and then decide a couple of months later that they’ve grown up and they’re not cute anymore. Actually that’s not a particularly good comparison as I’m still cute. But Mum, Dad, you can’t just neglect your parenting duties in this way. You made a commitment forty odd years ago,

lifestyle1.net | 25

and it’s time you saw it through to its conclusion. I demand that the Christmas decorations of my youth be returned to the Christmas tree. This is not good for my mental health. It makes me feel sad and I don’t like it. Christmas is not about appearances. It’s not about a tree that is completely symmetrical and like a Target catalogue. Here’s a deal Mum and Dad. When I stop making you home-made Christmas cards, as in a card that shows my care for you, then you can go back to your tasteless, characterless Christmas tree. And I’d like some new socks for Christmas. Mum and Dad, if you’d like to somehow defend your reprehensible behaviour, you can email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Vegetable Roll 60g butter 50g (1/3 cup) plain flour 250ml (1 cup) milk 4 eggs, separated 40g (1/2 cup) shredded vegetarian hard cheese (or parmesan) 2 tbs chopped fresh continental parsley 1 tbs chopped fresh chives 55g (1/2 cup) coarsely grated mozzarella Baby rocket leaves, to serve

ZUCCHINI FILLING 1 tbs olive oil 2 large zucchini, coarsely grated 150g baby spinach leaves 150g pkt goat’s cheese 100g roasted red peppers, finely chopped 80g fresh ricotta

Method For the zucchini filling, heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the zucchini and stir for 5 minutes or until soft and liquid has evaporated. Transfer the zuchini to a bowl. Add the spinach to the pan. Stir for 2 minutes or until it wilts. Transfer to the bowl. Cool. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly spray a 25 x 30cm (base measurement) Swiss roll pan with oil and line with baking paper. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until foaming. Add the flour and stir for 1 minute or until the mixture bubbles. Remove from heat. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly, until smooth and combined. Place over medium heat. Stir for 5 minutes or until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat. Stir in egg yolks, 1 at a time, until well combined. Use electric beaters to whisk the egg whites in a dry, clean bowl until firm peaks form. Add one-quarter of the egg white to the milk mixture and use a large metal spoon to fold until just combined. Add the remaining egg white and fold until just combined. Fold in the parmesan, parsley and chives until just combined. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the surface. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until puffed and golden. Meanwhile, stir the goats cheese, peppers and ricotta into the zucchini mixture. Season with pepper. Place a clean tea towel on a work surface. Turn the roulade onto the tea towel and remove baking paper. Set aside for 1-2 minutes to cool slightly. Spread the filling evenly over the roulade. Starting with the long side closest to you, gently roll up roulade. Set aside for 5 minutes to rest. Preheat grill to high. Transfer the roulade to a baking tray. Top with the mozzarella. Cook under grill for 4-5 minutes or until melted and golden. Serve with rocket

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS LUNCH RETURNS WITH MORE TRIMMINGS A festive feast, plenty of Christmas cheer and people to share it with, will be on the menu at this year’s Mount Gambier Community Christmas Day Lunch. The volunteer-run event, which is now in its eighth year, aims to offer a truly special and memorable Christmas Day to those in the community who are homeless, in need, or who would otherwise be alone at this time of year. “For some in our region, Christmas can be a lonely or challenging time. Not everyone has the means to celebrate the day or come together with loved ones – but we are hoping to put meaning and festive fun back into the lives of those who need it most,” said coordinator Liz Rymill. This year, some 50 volunteers will join together to deliver a sumptuous lunch, a day of entertainment and festive goodwill to up to 170 guests. Renowned chef Kirby Shearing, of Soul Projects, will donate his time and skill in preparing a truly special meal, which includes the finest local produce, grown and harvested by South East

farmers. The event will also serve lunch guests a take-away meal for Boxing Day. Farming businesses such as Beachport Berkshires, Mayora Pork,

Hogs and Hens, the Splendid Egg and local lamb producers have donated produce for the ‘shared table’ style lunch. In the afternoon, lunch guests are invited to the Oatmill Cinema for a free screening of The Man Who Invented Christmas, courtesy of the Fulwood family and the Oatmill team in conjunction with the MGCCDL. “We are immensely grateful for the generosity and support received thus far from local businesses, community-minded organisations and individuals,” Liz said. “This event is all about a community of helping hands, supporting those in need of a hand up at this time of year.” The event has been generously supported by the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce, ac.care and the Mount Gambier City Council, as well as numerous businesses, organisations and individuals. The Mount Gambier Community Christmas Day Lunch is still looking for an entertainment act on the day, and organisers invite local musicians, choir groups or singers who may have some time spare on Christmas Day afternoon, to get in touch. While volunteer positions have now been filled, the committee is very keen to hear from people, businesses or organisations who may wish to make a small pledge to support the running of this not-for-profit event. The event will run from 12–4pm at the City Hall/Main Corner Complex. For further information or to book in for lunch, please contact Liz Rymill on 0401 854 638 or email mtgcommunitychristmaslunch@gmail. com

IN THE GARDEN This will be my last In the Garden segment for 2017 and it has certainly come around rather too fast for my liking! With the late/non existent spring and patchy weather ever since I don’t think the plants know what to do either!! With not too many sleeps left to Christmas it’s time to head down to Gardenarium for their 25–70% off preChristmas sale. You can still layby now for Christmas and leave picking up until Christmas Eve if you wish, especially plants. The farmyard and corrals are full again with an array of pigs, sheep, cows and chooks, right through to our metal oil drum animals that are intricately made by AIDS affected orphan children in Zimbabwe that are now ½ price to clear! The Limestone Coast Roses and Limestone Coast Advanced Trees part of the company is also as full as ever, even with the strange weather, and we have up to 50% off trees until Christmas Eve, including mop tops and weeping cherries. All of the 2017 new release roses, including the Always Remember for the Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night, along with all the old favourites, such as Mother’s Love and Grandma and Grandpa’s Rose, are all good gift ideas, along with a huge range of Standard roses. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without hydrangeas and we have masses of stunning mature plants in all colours, ranging from Intense blue, to purple, red, pinks and whites, as well as the new release dwarf varieties. These are ideal indoors for a short time, as decorations to your outside entertaining

By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant areas or as a fantastic Christmas gift. This year we have increased the numbers of trees in most categories, especially mop top style and weeping trees, which you just can’t get enough of. Cherries and blueberries are popular eating choices over Christmas, so why not give these as a gift, we have the new everbearing Aussie blueberry, too. Curry leaf trees, Fiddle Leafed Figs and the popular Tractor Seat plants are marching out the door along with String of Pearls and Chain of Hearts in hanging baskets for the non gardener or keen cook and Wollemi Pines are back again after a long drought and are ideal to decorate for Christmas trees for a short time indoors, for outdoors on the patio or to plant in the garden as a living fossil. The gift shop is bursting with ideas for the gardeners and non gardener alike, with outdoor clocks, all sorts of china jardinière’s and pots, terrariums, some intricately made garden art in metal made out of all sorts of old tools and welded together giving unique and interesting one offs!! Gardenarium is well known for its range of Birdhouses and feeders and this year is no exception with three new ranges on offer, the Gumnut Range is made in SA and crafted from treated pine and then burned and adorned with gumnuts and native seed pods and cones, ideal for native birds, even one in the shape of an outside dunny!!!! (see advert opposite page) as well as some colourful metal and timber birdhouses as well as dovecotes and of course Birdbaths all of which you can see on our website.

www,gardenarium.com.au Our range of outdoor furniture has been added to this season with the introduction of ceramic outdoor dining tables in natural and grey wood look, along with an expansion to our teak outdoor table ranges and even high pressure laminate from Belgium in crisp white on a teak frame with stunning Teak and batyline chairs, a must for the beach house or ultra modern home!! See the website for all our outdoor furniture lines in travertine stone, ceramic and teak as well as our real wicker relaxing coffee settings, rocking chairs and couches for the patio or sunroom. For many years Gardenarium and The Limestone Coast Group has supported the villagers along the coastlines of the Philippines hit for four years in a row, with many of the villagers not even having built new homes from the last typhoon when yet another one has hit. Many of the products we sell are from poor, underdeveloped countries and in particular the range of driftwood creations we have each year are from pieces of driftwood harvested from the beaches by local villagers in the current typhoon hit areas. Each village is allowed to harvest a certain amount of driftwood thrown up from the typhoons and craft them into the wonderful pieces we sell from Christmas decorations to spheres, planters and decorative wreathes, and a brand new range of birdhouses in several styles- see our newly upgraded website for all of the styles - I am continually amazed at their creativity given the adversity. I urge everyone to dig deep this Christmas by buying a piece of driftwood artwork or ornaments that will last forever. They are extremely well priced considering the transportation and shipping to us and we feel warm knowing that the proceeds are helping the villagers rebuild their lives. Items start from very low priced Christmas stars at only $9, so ideal for a Kris Kringle, with even the more intricate piece really far too low priced for the work involved, especially for the western world. Managers and staff at Gardenarium & The Limestone Coast Group of Companies would like to take this opportunity to Wish all our customers and readers a very Happy Christmas and relaxing New year, we will be closing from Christmas Eve until 2nd January for a well earned break with our families and hope you can all wait until then to see us again.

NEW LOOK WEIGHT WATCHERS Mount Gambier based Weight Watchers coaches have been working overtime for the past nine months to

lift the profile of the local group and to reinvigorate interest in the time honoured program, that is as much about a healthy lifestyle as it is weight

loss. The concerted push has seen numbers increase and all three of the weekly meetings – Tuesday 5.30pm; Thursday 12.15pm & Saturday 9.30am - attract around 20 members regularly. All meetings are held at the Mount Gambier Bowls Club with entry via the rear door. The explosion in interest has seen two new coaches added to the team – Maddie Opie and Caitlin Jenner -and a meeting has been added to the schedule, in Penola. The Penola meeting is being held at the Penola Bowls Club and has been running for six weeks. It is held on Tuesdays from 10am. “I am hoping to help any people interested from Naracoorte and surrounding districts that don’t have the time to travel to Mount Gambier,” coach Tania Kent said. The excitement at local level has been boosted by the launch of a new Weight Watchers program the New Your Way+ program, which has a range of more than 200 Zero Points foods, to add even more flexibility. “It means there are now more Zero Point foods so that you can enjoy more choice, more freedom and less tracking,” coach Tania Kent said. Tania is also aware that early in the New Year is when people often look to reinvent their lifestyle, be healthier, and in many cases, look to drop a few kilos, and she, and all the coaches, would encourage people to even pop along to a meeting before then just to see what Weight Watchers is all about. “Older people remember the program from the past and it is so different to that now, and younger people don’t really know who we are and we want to change that,” Tania said. “We want people to know we are still around and we can help.” Having the two younger coaches come on board means the quartet of locally based mentors now cover all generations. Maddie and Caitlin understand the younger members; Tania takes the middle ground, and Loraine Baron, has a strong connection with the older members. At 19 years old, Maddie is the youngest Weight Watchers coach across the Australian organisation and it all started from giving her mum, fellow Weight Watchers coach Tania Kent, a helping hand. She has been able to help members take on the technology available through Weight Watchers and

There is a jewellery prize inside every bon bon on the tree

the app and she has been invaluable with that. “I was doing the program with mum and when Loraine (Baron) had to go away for a month, I started helping her with meetings,” Maddie said. “I loved going and helping out and so we looked into becoming a coach. I have always loved food and I love cooking, so I love that part of it too.” Which is a huge bonus for local members, as Maddie has developed a series of delicious recipes, coming up with healthier versions of some decadent treats and popular meals. “You can bring her your favourite recipe and she will try and tweak it for you to make it healthier,” Tania said. “She has always been a healthy eater.” It was in July that Maddie officially became a Weight Watchers coach, with Caitlin becoming a coach around the same time when the team was losing one of its established coaches. “I started Weight Watchers in August last year,” Caitlin said. “I came along with my mum because I wanted to lose weight and we wanted to do it together. I have been doing Weight Watchers since then and find it really good. It certainly isn’t hard to follow the program. I am now enjoying the challenge of my new role as a coach.” All four coaches also attend a meeting as a member to keep their own healthy lifestyle on track. What has also been pleasing for the coaches is seeing that most of the members who attend meetings are staying for the meetings. “A lot of people used to weigh in and leave,” Maddie said. “But they now realise how valuable the meetings are, and that you pick up some great ideas.” The Weight Watchers local group also has a closed facebook page and a newsletter to keep members up to date. “It’s a closed facebook page so people feel like it’s a safe place,” Tania said. “Weight Watchers just helps you make better choices but it certainly doesn’t stop you going out and enjoying food and enjoying the things you love.” For more information you can call Tania on 0400 404 801 or email Maddie at maddie.opie@weightwatchers.com.au Below - Local Weight Watchers coaches - Caitlin Jenner, Loraine Baron, Tania Kent & Maddie Opie.

SCHOOLS RECYCLING COMPETITION Schools play an important role in the community as they help communities reduce and recycle waste, while saving money and teaching kids valuable lessons. In addition to this, schools have the potential to reduce the amount of resources they consume and dispose of. Schools also give young people knowledge skills and positive attitudes towards the environment. The Limestone Coast Local Government Association together with the seven Councils across the Limestone Coast, are once again holding a Waste Reduction and Recycling Challenge in 2018 from the 5th of March to the 6th of April. It is open to all schools in the Limestone Coast region and the challenge is about changing attitudes towards waste and recycling thus helping reduce costs for Council and the community. Competition categories 1. The least general waste on a per capita basis. 2. The most recyclables on a per capita basis. 3. The least amount of general waste and recycling generated on a per capita basis. 4. The highest amount of waste composted on a per capita basis. Schools can enter any competition category or multiple categories with prize money up for grabs. 2017 challenge winners used their prize money in various ways. • Grant High School who won in two categories used their prize money towards buying a drone to support field work and working with the environment in HASS/Science. • Bordertown High School utilised their prize money to install sensor lights in school toilets. • St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School will purchase an Eglu Chicken Cube which will further assist with disposal of the school’s food organics and green organics. • The Independent Learning Centre used their winnings to purchase colour coded bins for use throughout the ILC so that sorting of waste can take place earlier in the system. They also purchased power tools to make re-used items from the transfer station easier to process. Expressions of Interest are now open for schools to participate in the challenge. Please register your expression of interest online by the close of business Wednesday, February 23.

JAM PACKED SUMMER EVENTS CALENDAR RELEASED Glenelg Shire Council’s quarterly events calendar proves Glenelg is the place to be this summer with festivals and events being hosted throughout the shire every weekend over the three month period. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the easy-toread A3 guide included all community events in the shire for the season and was widely distributed to ensure mass market consumption. “The summer events calendar is available for free at Visitor Information Centres, local caravan parks, cafes and a number of businesses throughout the shire, in addition to Council’s Customer Service Centres,” Cr Rank said. “Not only is the events calendar a great way for locals to keep on top of events in the area, the region’s VIC network have also shared the calendar as an easy resource for visitors to map their stay in the area.” Cr Rank said the calendar boasted a number of popular events, including Portland’s Christmas Eve celebrations, New Year’s Eve and the highly anticipated Hooked on Portland Festival held during the Australia Day long weekend. “The calendar also gives visitors the opportunity to attend much-loved smaller local community events and markets, boosting the shire’s reputation in local produce,” she said. Cr Rank said the launch of the new I am Portland tourism website this month would further strengthen the marketing council could provide to local volunteers and groups who worked tirelessly to coordinate and promote local events. “It doesn’t matter whether your event is brand new, or been running for years, we want to ensure it is included in this resource so as many people as possible are aware it is on and visit our region,” she said. To register your event visit www.glenelg.vic.gov.au/calendar and follow the listing guide. Alternatively contact the Portland VIC on (03)5522 2130, Casterton VIC on (03)5581 2070 or Nelson VIC on (08)87384051 and speak to a staff member for assistance to add your event. BASEBALL RESULTS DIVISION ONE MATCH REPORTS South Indians 12 def Central 2 South Indians enforced the mercy rule on Central in the 8th inning to maintain their position at the top of the Division 1 ladder on Saturday night. Central batted first, scoring their only 2 runs for the game with hits to Brad Lynagh and Lachie Tilley. From then on Central made no impression on the pitching of Dean Hamilton and Ryan Placucci who only conceded another 2 safehits to the Central Batting lineup. While the Central pitching starter Lachie Tilley held the South run machine scoreless for 3 innings, the floodgates opened in the next five innings with 1 run in the 4th, 3 in the 5th and game over in the 8th with 8 runs scored. However a number of fielding errors helped the score along but did not stop South from picking up 17 safehits for the night including 4 from 5 at bats by Ben Nash. Federal 4 def Tigers 3 Solo pitching performances by both pitchers, Alex Reppin (Federal) and Karl Ransom (Tigers), saw not a run scored until the top of the 8th in the Saturday afternoon game between Federal and Tigers. Tigers scored 1 run in the 8th after a wild throw from shortstop Nathan Taylor. 2 runs were added in the top of the 9th by Tigers after an error and a wild throw and safe hits from Brayden Morton and Joe Sims giving Tigers a 3-0 lead. Finally the Federal batting order caught up with Tigers pitcher, Karl Ransom, and consecutive hits to Alex Reppin and Nathan Taylor, a walk to Wade Chant. A sacrifice fly to Shane Howard, then hits to Clay Carpenter, Alex Pearson and Josh Wilsmore saw 4 runs cross the plate for the win. SPORT REPRESENTATIVE BOWLS COMPETITIONS HEAT UP IN THIS REGION WITH THE HONOURS SHARED Lower South East bowlers have had a busy time over the Past month with representative games being held against the Upper South East and Wimmera Associations. The Lower South East bowlers proved much stronger than their Upper South East opponents with the results in the ladies 18 pts +62 shots to the Upper South East 6 pts – 69 shots. The men also defeated the Upper South East winning 183 shots to 148 shots. Earlier this month the Inter Exchange was also played between the Wimmera District and the Lower South East. The men travelled to Edenhope and had an excellent win in a very hard fought competition and retained the shield once again with a 238 shot win to Wimmera 160 shots. The rink of David O’Shaughnessy (skipper - Naracoorte RSL) Glen Wright, Peter Roachock (Mt Gambier RSL) & Dean Burgoyne (Robe) were the overall best rink for the day, taking home the Wimmera mug. The Ladies resumed the competition exchange at the Naracoorte RSL Bowling club after a break of five years but the Wimmera Ladies proved far too strong for the Lower South East winning with 200 pts to the LSE 150 points to take home the shield, which was donated by Jenny Waugh. The rink of Heather Richards (skip) (Port MacDonnell) Andrea Radley (Millicent) Nancye

Wilson (Mt Gambier RSL) & Barbara Milstead (Port MacDonnell) received the Wimmera mug over Liz Copping (Penola) Leanne Hentschke (Mt Gambier) Adrianna Ross (Millicent) & Jenny Bowering (Mt Gambier RSL) who also won their two games with the close result of 57 pts +22 shots and 57 pts +20 shots respectively. The reverse challenge will be played at the same time next year with the men playing at Naracoorte and the ladies at Edenhope. HEADING TO NATIONALS

MAJOR SPONSOR SECURED FOR SOCCER TEAM

Their weekend tournament might have been cancelled but there was still good news for the Limestone Coast All Abilities Soccer team with the signing of a major sponsor and their very first playing strips presented. There are 11 players in the squad, that competes in 9-a-side competitions for players with special needs. The Bedford Cup, which is a 16 team competition in Adelaide, was the event the players had been preparing for but bad weather saw the event cancelled but at training last Monday players were all smiles as coach Keith Seiler was able to hand out the group’s first official playing strips, courtesy of newly signed sponsor Steeline. The group trains on Monday nights at Blue Lake Soccer Club’s Malseed Park home base, with friendlies also played most weekends.

The players also spend time at mainstream soccer clubs as part of their soccer development. The group has enjoyed a couple of highlights in 2017, with the opportunity to work with Australian soccer star Harry Kewell, when the Harry Kewell Academy visited the region, and also when the Celtic Academy sessions were held. “The Adelaide Special Olympics soccer team travelled to Mount Gambier for the Celtic sessions and we were able to play a 7-a-side game for the guys to practise their skills,” Keith said. Prior to securing the Steeline sponsorship, the Limestone Coast All Abilities Soccer team had been busy fundraising to fund coaching clinics, trips to Adelaide and to purchase equipment, with balls being the first major purchase, after relying on the South East Women’s Football Association that had been providing equipment and support for the group. One of the Limestone Coast team has earned higher honours and will be representing South Australia at the 2018 Special Olympics National Games. Jamal Seiler is the player who has earned selection and the opportunity to test himself at the higher level. Amechai Bawden (pictured above) is not only part of the Limestone Coast All Abilities soccer team, he is also a talented runner and is continuing his tradition of representing the State at the Special Olympics National Games and heading to the 2018 event to compete in a number of long distance events. The 2017 One Forty One Plantations Blue Lake Fun Run was part of his preparation, competing in the 6.8km and finishing second. Amechai has travelled Australia competing at a number of events and after a really busy first half of the year, he has battled some niggly injuries and fatigue to now really focus on preparing for the 2018 games.

MOTOR MOUNT GAMBIER FAMILY TRUCK SHOW

Last year saw the inaugural Truck Convoy for Kids - an event coordinated to raise money and source gifts for distribution by ac.care. It was a huge success and so this year, organiser Adam Smith, again put together a convoy that culminated at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds - rebadged as the Mount Gambier Family Truck Show. More than 100 trucks ended up on site with more than 80 entered in the truck show and the response from the public to come and check out the display was overwhelming. “It was an awesome day,” Adam said. “We were very, very happy with the numbers and blown away by the amount of people that attended.” Entry was by gold coin donation and while the final tally is still being compiled, hopes are high the 2017 event has eclipsed the efforts of the inaugural 2016 event. “I have already had so many people want to jump on board again for next year as well so it looks like it is here to stay,” Adam said. All proceeds, including around half a truck filled with toys, goes to ac.care.
