COVER • THE MAC’S HOTEL SECRET GARDEN - SUMMER NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD

COMING EVENTS

CASTERTON GOLF CLUB SPRING TOURNAMENT MASTERS CASTERTON GOLF CLUB November 27- December 3

When The Mac’s Hotel in Mount Gambier unveiled its Secret Garden last summer, manager Adam Nicholls promised it would be back bigger and better this summer and he has kept that promise. Marketing & Operations Manager Dion Di Vittorio said the overwhelming positive feedback from patrons ensured the outdoor space would again become a feature of the Mac’s Hotel summer schedule. It launched earlier this month and will wind down on February 3, vastly extending the six week trial period from last summer. Open Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm and Sundays from 12pm, the Secret Garden again promises an experience like no other in the region. Aiming for a Fringe Festival feel, given it was part of the inaugural Mount Gambier Fringe in February, the area boasts eclectic pallet furniture, a sand pit and a new bar. The Mac’s Hotel is the only regional venue to be

dubbed a Corona Spiritual Home and while management expects the popular boutique beer to be a popular beverage of choice in the Secret Garden, there are cocktails, slushies and a wide selection of drinks, including specials, on offer. The Secret Garden is set up to be a community area, a popular meeting place and, at this time of year, a venue for your Christmas functions and get togethers, with Christmas packages available to take advantage of this unique and stunning outdoor venue. THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH It didn’t start as smoothly as freestyle motocross rider Josh Burdon would have liked but in the end, he has enjoyed another stint entertaining crowds internationally, returning home to Millicent after 180 shows and thankfully, no broken bones. What was to be a six month contract ended up closer to three after a couple of months delays on visas but eventually Josh, and, Tasmanian based teenage sensation Jayden Bailey, joined the show in Hong Kong & China, working in a zoo the size of a small town. “It was really interesting and challenging and the main thing is I’ve come home in one piece and got the job done,” Josh said. It was Josh’s second stint with this show, having enjoyed a month long contract in July 2016, and he is pretty sure there will be more opportunities in the future. “They just love it,” Josh said. “You can actually

hear the screaming and cheering through your helmet. They have never seen motocross like this before. They have never seen a motorbike get off the ground like that.” The arrival delay might mean Josh performed less shows than anticipated but it was still two

shows a day, seven days a week for the entire time he was there. Josh describes the show as “controlled chaos” but a smooth, action packed one hour event. His role was around 10 minutes of that, with African dancers and some stunning equestrian performances part of the action. “Everyone involved was so talented,” he said. The 40 degree heat and 90 percent humidity took some getting used to – not just for the riders but the bikes as well. “We did have issues just sorting out the tyres,” Josh said. “We would check the pressure but because they were stored in an airconditioned area, when they hit the humidity and heat and the hot concrete that would change. The bikes also ran completely differently during the day and that heat and the cooler night performances.” What was amazing was the backdrop against which these high flying performances were set – it was basically a picturesque jungle. To understand the scale of the zoo, there were buses moving guests around the zoo as if it was a small town and the number of animals was huge, a much larger scale than Australian zoos. We often equate the phrase the city that never sleeps with New York but Josh can attest that he was in a city that never sleeps. “You could shop at night and it was nothing to be out at 3am in the morning,” he said. “You felt so safe, though, nothing like being here in Australia and looking over your shoulder as you walk home from the pub.” The language barrier was huge, even with the help of a translating app

and some pretty innovative charades, but, the bottom line, was the people were friendly and just loved the visiting

motocross stars. Now that Josh is back home, it is time for some planning. “I really want to get more work on the bikes and focus on that,” he said. “You have a small window in this career and I want to make the most of it. Performing every day has given Josh so much more confidence on the bike. “By the end of it, jumps on the bike felt as safe and simple as walking.” Josh certainly took the opportunity to research more opportunities while he was in Asia, including Window of the World – a theme park in China. “Because we were there it was easier for them to understand what we do and what we can offer,” Josh said. “Either way we have made some good contacts.” Everyone involved in the show stayed at the same venue and some good friendships have certainly been made. With little contact with the outside world, Josh was also blissfully unaware of the North Korean missile tests that were happening an hour from where Josh was working, until his sister called to check on him, and he also avoided the hurricanes that went through, also only around an hour away, wiping out the huge marquee at another team’s motocross show. So taking out that, the oppressive weather, the pollution and language issues, it was an experience he would happily repeat as he looks to make the most of his motocross skills, while he still can. MOBILE PHONE BLACKSPOTS SET TO BE RECTIFIED EARLY NEXT YEAR Minister for Communications, Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, and Federal Member for Barker Tony MP, have called on telecommunication companies to tender for the Coalition’s ‘Priority Locations Round’ of the Mobile Black

VANDALISM ENDAGERS FREE LAKE ACCESS Wattle Range Council has had to undertake a series of urgent repairs to the safety fencing and gates that surround the Millicent Swimming Lake since the facility was reopened in early November, as a result of senseless vandalism. “It is extremely

Spot Program, which will provide new or improved mobile coverage to Kalangadoo and Kybybolite. “I understand that that the communities in Kalangadoo and Kybybolite are frustrated with the time this is taking,” Mr Pasin said. “It was certainly not anticipated to take this long, but I can assure them these towers will be built.” The Coalition Government expects the tender process to be finalised by the end of the year, with the rollout of successful towers to commence early in 2018. “The Coalition Government has identified these locations and will ensure improved mobile coverage in these areas that would otherwise have missed out,” Mr Pasin said. disappointing that a small antisocial group continue to vandalise this unique community asset,” Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Ben Gower said. “This is the second occasion in a week where safety fencing has been damaged. The repair costs have been significant with over $1,200 spent already this season. If any member of the public witnessed these events or see it happening again in the future, we ask that you immediately report it to the police. If the offenders are caught, council will be seeking to have those responsible charged. We are all very fortunate to have free access to such a wonderful asset like the swimming lake, and we hope that this kind of behaviour stops immediately.”

PORTLAND CONTINUES TO ATTRACT CRUISE LINERS Portland’s cruise ship profile continues to build with the attraction of two new cruise vessels for the 2020 season. Holland America Line ship Maasdam will arrive on 2 January 2020 followed by the Seven Seas Navigator from the Regent Seven Sea Cruises fleet on February 21, 2020. This takes the total number of ships over the next three years to five NEW ENTRANCE SIGNS FOR MOUNT GAMBIER The four Mount Gambier entrance signs have been rejuvenated with new imagery to highlight Umpherston Cave on Jubilee Highway, the Cave Garden on Millicent Road, Centenary Tower on Nelson Road and the Blue Lake on Penola Road in line with Discover Mount Gambier tourism branding late last week. The new billboards follow the launch of state of the art Tourism Mount Gambier visitor website www. discovermountgambier.com.au last month. “The images where chosen to align with the look and feel of the website. We are proud of the fact that we have one location and unlimited experiences and the images reflect the beauty of our natural assets,” City of Mount Gambier Tourism and Economic Development Manager Donna Foster said. “The old signs were erected in the early 2000s and were long overdue for replacement.” The new 4600mm by 2800mm aluminium composite panels feature full digital prints and protective

vessels, including the next scheduled arrival, the L’Austral from Ponant Cruises on January 31 next year.

The Limestone Coast was the centre of the rose universe earlier this month, when the Rose Society of South Australia converged on Mount Gambier, enjoying a whirlwind tour of the region’s best gardens and the hospitality of The Barn. Every two years the society holds a combined branches meeting for its four member branches and it was the Limestone Coast’s turn to host the weekend, focussing on their shared love of roses, but also developing friendships. Aside from Marianne and Dale Cleves garden, at The Barn, the members visited Betty and John McKee’s Sheriffmuir; the home garden of Lorraine and Lindsay Merrett, Barbara and Max Lightbody’s Aberfoyle; Windmore, the garden of Cobi and Cary Jennings; Margaret and Grant Harrington’s Moruya and Sue and John Zwar’s Camawald. Around 120 rose lovers enjoyed the weekend, with special guest speaker headlining the celebration dinner with a presentation focussed on the regeneration of gardens after bushfires. Jill showed how she, and a number of friends and businesses, were able to help residents acquire and replant hundreds of roses in bush fire affected towns around Kinglake, in Victoria. Weather leading into the rose society visit was far from ideal with the extreme heat and Thursday downpour but the rose society still gave the region a huge tick of approval. “Absolutely ten out of ten,” Rose Society of South Australia secretary Wendy Trimper said. “Even though our gardeners could see there was some damage from the heat and rain every garden was absolutely fabulous.” Visitors from places like Kimba and Hay were especially blown away as they are not used to the rich greenery presented by the South East spaces. “For them gardens like these were absolutely amazing,” Wendy said. “They were astounded they were so green and so beautifully kept.” State-wide there are around 1250 members in the society and the contingent that visited this region were especially impressed with the diversity of the gardens presented. “All seven gardens were different,” Wendy said. “Even though they had similar plants the way the gardens were put together and developed made them all different and that was wonderful.” Society president Douglas Gregory summed up the weekend in his own words, too. “Each garden visited was unique and each had that special property that we all want from any garden - we leave with our spirit a little more lifted, our intentions a little more grand and our belief that nature is beautiful, more firmly entrenched.”

The exhibition will also feature works from an ever-changing personal collection of inspirations, work made by family, friends, colleagues and mentors such as Jo Crawford, Peter Johnson, Philip Hart, Lesa Farrant, Lincoln Kirby Bell, Chris Headley, Toni Warburton and Stephen Benwell. FOODLAND P48 2017 P1

IN THE (CHRISTMAS) GARDEN After many years with propagation production issues, our “living fossil“, No, not Dame Edna, the Wollemi Pine is finally back. We only ran out of stocks relatively recently as Limestone Coast Advanced Trees is the grower of many advanced specimens of this stunning tree, so for us it hasn’t been a huge issue, but most of Australia scoured the world wide web pretty well to find our last few trees and as usual they went to far away places from Mount Gambier. Fear not, if you have missed out, as we now have good stocks in again and as with last time round they are still the same much better value for money than when they first came out, when they commanded ridiculous money. Orders for all our Christmas type trees are rolling in well from the multitude of poms, Brits, Americans, Europeans, Canadians, South Africans and many more who love their traditional, real Christmas trees. Ordering NOW, for pick up closer to Christmas, is advised, as we always

seem to sell out quickly with only a limited number we can grow. Here at Gardenarium and The Pot Shop we are bursting at the seams with Christmas gift ideas and with less than four weeks to go you should be well underway with Christmas shopping. We have the whole family covered, not just for gardeners, from wall plaques for the cubby house, and children’s tools, right through to fruit trees, berries and ornamental trees, and then on to quality outdoor furniture settings, bar chairs and tables and, as ever, a whole new range of outdoor garden benches, fountains and birdbaths. Last season we became the stockists for the Limestone Coast region for Kensington high quality teak outdoor furniture, expanding the teak and outdoor wicker range and adding a conservatory range (see website) adding solid teak dining chairs, daybeds, bar tables and stools. They have a warranty second to none. The pre-Christmas sale that ended

By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant last Sunday has been continued, so the good news is if you missed out on any of the hundreds of specials throughout the entire Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Group specials then there is still time. Much of our stock are one-offs found on our buying trips, and specialist, small amounts of products are only available. To keep our ranges unique, current and exclusive we aim to offer you, exclusive products, many from poor and underdeveloped countries, which we try to support as much as possible. With driftwood birdhouses from the Philippines, to wrought iron and cast iron ware from within Australia, a new range of birdhouses and feeders for native birds in our GumNut Collection (see website for details) statues from Indonesia, the range is overwhelming. Stock is handpicked from small batches and we will never have them again - a great gift idea for that someone special, safe in the knowledge that no one else will have them. The Old Potting Shed Gift Shop section is still undergoing expansion and as the days roll on more and more Christmas stock is being put out. You can lay by now for Christmas and leave picking up until Christmas Eve if you wish, this includes trees, Christmas trees and all other plants. A new shipment of real wicker furniture has just arrived along with our new 2018 range of outdoor tables in Natural Wood Look Ceramic tile tops, as well as travertine stone and marble, cast aluminium, PVC German wicker, with three year warranty, as well as our new teak furniture, which has been expanded with a modern Industrial

style. Are you planning to dine outside this Christmas or will be doing a lot of entertaining? Perhaps now is the time to look at upgrading your old outdoor setting or buy one that will last a lifetime. Some of the newest stock to arrive includes new cast iron firepits, ponds or planters, a whole host of new farm yard animals in much bigger sizes than those we have previously stocked, and a new range of high quality garden ponds (see website) gardening gloves, right up to long arm gloves in soft leather to protect from rose thorns. Our second shipment of driftwood Christmas trees, wreaths and stars, reindeers and beautiful angels has also just arrived from the Philippines, as well as interesting themed birdhouses like surf shack, railway station and even a church. The Pot Shop has also brought in a fantastic new range of wrought iron arbors and tree seats, garden arches, rose towers, obelisks, cast iron wall art

and decorative rose poles and wisteria rings to complement any garden. These structures are heavy duty and designed to last and age gracefully to blend in to most gardens. We also have cast aluminium weathervanes for those in coastal areas. And, of course, if it all get too hard then we have the good old gift vouchers in any denomination and they are valid for 12 months. So, whatever the gardener or nongardener in your life is hoping for this Christmas be sure to make a trip to Gardenarium and The Pot Shop and Limestone Coast Roses and Advanced Trees and wander through the amazing array of goodies. Open every day except Monday to 5.30pm and 5pm on Saturdays & Sundays. 167, Bay Road, (Riddoch Hwy) Mount Gambier, see the website for details.

were able to refine some aspects of the walk from 2016, with a marquee added for more overnight shelter and better marshalling of the transport to and from the starting point each day. “We learned a few things from last year and we will learn a few things from this year,” she said. “What we are aiming to do is set up an event where everything runs smoothly and anyone can be on the

committee and get it done.”

STEPPING TO SUPPORT LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION For the second consecutive year, the Leukaemia Foundation has enjoyed a windfall courtesy of a community fundraising effort, with walkers spending three days tackling sections of the Great South West Walk as part of Step to Support. The 2017 event raised $7000 for the Leukaemia Foundation and importantly, for organisers, not only saw a return of those who were part of the

inaugural Step to Support, but also new faces, who will hopefully continue to support the event. “We had less people at this year’s event but more people doing repeat days so it was good to see people backing up,” organiser Tash Attiwill said. Walkers have the option of walking one, two or all three days. “It was good to see familiar faces but also some new groups,” Tash said. “We had

a group of six from Coonawarra and that was great and because there were more people doing repeat days we had more people at night at the dinners and that meant the atmosphere was really great.” That atmosphere was enhanced by performers Bella Leane and Cameron Pritchard, who gave their time to entertain the troops. “They were fantastic and people were asking for their business cards so they could book them,” Tash said. “They didn’t have cards but I think they’re going to get onto that. They were supposed to play from 6-7pm and they were still playing at 9.30pm and everyone was loving it.” The three day walk tackled the same route as 2016 but plans are already underway to mix that up in 2018. “We are looking at some of the Great South West Walk around Cape Bridgewater,” Tash said. “It would be good to change it, especially for those girls that have done it both years, and also it might attract a few more Victorians to get involved. We just need to do some test runs and see the best spots to get in and out and that sort of thing.” Tash was also pleased organisers lifestyle1.net | 30

HIGH FIVE... By ROBBIE TANSEL So I had the pleasure of being in the Christmas Parade last weekend. I’ve got to admit, I’m a bit of a fan of the Christmas Parade. Parades rank right

up there with garage sales, markets, and church fairs as far as I’m concerned. They’re a great way to spend a bit of time on a weekend.

Now everything was going fine as I wandered down Commercial Street. It was a bit hotter and sunnier than I prefer but I was coping. My arm was getting a bit sore from waving but I was holding it together okay. Now as I was going for my stroll I noticed that some little kids were holding their hands up for high fives. I have to confess, I’m not a high five sort of person. And what I mean by that is I’m not an American professional sportsperson. Apart from American professional sports people, no one else should really give high fives. Find your own thing. Realistically, who else in the world has that much excitement that they

need to high five with a person? Doctors and nurses shouldn’t be high fiving after a successful medical procedure. Garbage collectors shouldn’t be high fiving when they finish their daily run. I can think of no one who has enough excitement in their lives to justify high fiving, other than American professional athletes.

Anyway, you can’t disappoint little kids if they want a high five at the Christmas Parade. I’m not a big fan of Christmas, but I’m also not a Grinch. So I started giving kids high fives. I felt like a fraud but it was making little kids happy. One of the problems with starting to give people high fives when you’re a mega big star in the Christmas Parade is that soon everyone wants a high five; all the kids have their hands out expectantly. Again I was in a position where I didn’t want to let people down. And as much as I was feeling silly, things were still fine. That was until a young man of about ten put his hand up for the high five. I went to five his hand and he pulled it out of the way. The old, “Thought you had a friend, didn’t you?” move. Not cool. Just like the made high five, the pull away from the high five catches on as well. In no time at all I had kids making me think that they wanted to high five me and then pulling their hands away. How on earth am I meant to handle that? Do I start ignoring kids that want to high five, many of whom are lovely young people wanting to share the human experience with another person? But at the same time I’m risking the humiliation of swinging my hand through thick air. The choice was obvious. No more high fives. Sorry kids, but a couple of young punks spoiled it for everyone. It does raise some interesting questions though, wouldn’t you think? Shouldn’t there be some sort of law against removing your hand after you’ve committed to high fiving someone. Surely it’s a contract, a covenant (great word), a promise between two people. The two people are agreeing to move their open hands together at speed (not too high speed) as a way of connecting and showing approval for each other. Surely this sacred meeting of two people should be protected by law. I can feel a plebiscite coming on. In my ideal world, these young people would have been cuffed and taken to the police station on the weekend, given a good beating, and then locked up until they committed to following through on high five offers. Or not offering to high five at all. High fiving is a serious commitment, young people, and if you’re not going to treat it with respect I think you should have your hands cut off. Don’t even get me started on bumping your knuckles together with a person and then making it look like an explosion. Shazam indeed! If any candidates for the upcoming state election would like me to help them with quality policies like this one, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE FOR KIANA Sisters Symiko and Kiana De Van Der Schueren were household names in Mount Gambier as two of the premier dancers at MJ Dance Studio. A sea change for their parents, who sold their share of Mount Gambier’s Sorrentos Café, saw the girls northbound where they continued their dance education. Symiko has started to forge a career already, having, among other professional gigs, secured a place in the Australian cast of The Lion King, heading with that production to Asia, as well. Now it’s Kiana’s turn as she makes her mark in the lucrative cruise ship industry. The girls called Tweed Heads home and attended Dance Force dance school – it was Kiana’s home from age13 to 17. “I did many dance competitions and trained extremely hard with my beautiful new dance family and this

opened up a whole magnitude of opportunities for my dance career that I truly never expected,” Kiana said. And while the new experiences she enjoyed with Dance Force were invaluable, Kiana never forgot her dancing roots – MJ Dance – and so many of her fellow MJ alumni inspired and helped her carve out life after school, especially given Kiana finished school a year earlier than most and was only 17 as she looked to step into the world of professional dancing. “Even though I was a bit younger I was so eager and motivated to get into the world of professional dance and so I reached out to many graduates from MJ for advice and just to chat about opportunities,” she said. “So I attended many auditions, sent many emails and in the meantime learnt so much

teaching young ones at the studio and still training myself, under Nicole Wells at Dance Force.” It took until she turned 18 to be offered an opportunity but it was a good one – a contract with the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. “I couldn’t wait to get going,” she said. It means for the past 12 months, Kiana’s life has been the perfect adventure – performing for a living and being paid to travel the world. Part of the Quantum of the Seas ship, there isn’t a place in Asia she hasn’t visited, each time on four and five day cruises. She has performed in two productions – a Vegas inspired show, Sequins and Feathers, and Sonic Odyssey, a production centring around a stunning earth harp. She is now in her third stint with an aerial show, a more acrobatic production. “I’m planning to come back to Australia and spend a little time with family and then head off again on another contract in the new year,” Kiana said. “Surrounded by hard working and talented performers every day, it’s hard not to want to do this forever.” Life on the high seas is a far cry from growing up on the outskirts of Mount Gambier on a small family farm but Kiana always knew what started as a hobby, albeit almost every night after school, was going to be so much more and lead to so much more. “For sure there has been moments of doubt,” Kiana said. When mum Mandy told her she had to wear false eyelashes for every performance, the rough and

lifestyle1.net | 36

tumble girl, who loved nothing more than helping dad John with the work around the farm, was ready to quit the world of sequins and silk. “But I truly believe if you love something enough and your brave enough to go for it you’ll make it in the end,” she said. “Most of my belief came from my dance teachers and role models, Maria Slape and Nicole Wells, and without them, and their constant support,

guidance and their ability to help shape the dancer and performer I am today, I wouldn’t have a career in the job I love, let alone all the incredible people I’ve met in the process and friendships that have lead me to believe in myself as a person and dancer.” The support of her family has also been paramount in Kiana’s success. The support of her parents to pursue her dancing dreams – from the dance studio in their Mount Gambier home, to the endless hours of sewing costumes from mum Mandy, to the travel involved in competing, her parents have been front and centre. And then there’s her inspiring sister, who has always led by example in terms of commitment to her craft and work ethic. “My family has always put me before themselves, had my back, and, if anything, believed in me more than I sometimes believed in myself,” Kiana said. “Seeing Symiko live her dream and become a part of something special like The Lion King has inspired me to believe I could as well.”

OUT & ABOUT

LOCAL SPORT ISABEL NAMED CAPTAIN OF STATE TEAM Naracoorte’s Isabel Ross has been handed a great honour - she has been named the female captain of the 2017 South Australian SAPSASA State Athletics team that is set to compete in Adelaide from December 2-6. Isabel has been doing athletics since she was six, when she started at the Naracoorte & District Little Athletics, and has done it every year since. It is no real surprise that Isabel earned the captaincy - it is her third successive year in the State team. She will be competing in the 100m, 200m, Medley Relay, where she is running the 100m leg, and 4x200m relay. Aside from the weekly trips to Adelaide for training every weekend since October, Isabel trains up to three times a week, working on not just her sprinting, but also extending herself and building her endurance over longer distances, as well as strength training. Isabel also loves cross country running and netball, while working on her flexibility and coordination with her dance studies through MJ Dance Studio, which has been operating classes out of Naracoorte for a few years.

MORE STATE SUCCESS FOR ELLA

The spotlight was on violence against women last week as the annual White Ribbon campaign hit the headlines. Mount Gambier held a breakfast on Friday with a variety of community members on hand to raise awareness of an issue so often hidden behind closed doors. Events have been held across the region and nationwide in the past week, with some events set down for this week. Above (top) - Peter & Jane Zeitz helped with the cooking of the White Ribbon Breakfast at Frew Park last Friday. Above (bottom left) - Andrew Thomas has become a regular face at the barbeque at the annual White Ribbon Breakfast. Above (bottom right) - Gavin Male pins a white ribbon on 11 year old daughter Jenna. The Mount Gambier Railway Lands took home three prestigious awards at the Planning Institute Australia (PIA) South Australia Awards for Excellence 2017 in Adelaide earlier this month. City of Mount Gambier representatives accepted the coveted overall Planning Minister’s Award and also won the Plan to Place and Great Place Awards for the planning and development of the community project.

Soccer has Aussie Rules to thank for snaring Ella Firth as one of the rising stars of the game. Early next month, the Year 11 Grant High School student is heading off to Adelaide to represent South Australia at the Under 18 School Sports Australia Pacific School Games, in a sport she took up because there was no real future and limited opportunities in Australian Rules Football. “I wanted to play footy but that was hard to do and some of my friends played soccer so I decided to give it a go,” Ella said. “Soccer was the next best thing.” That was back in 2011 and the 17 year old has made her name as a defensive midfielder. It is not her first time in the South Australian tri-colours – she has made the trips with regional SA teams to Fiji in 2015 and ’15 – the same trip six locals are headed on this year. She has also represented the State as part of the Christian Football Association national titles – that was last year and earned Ella a trip to Sydney. “I started to really love soccer because you do get a fair bit of the ball and you are always in the play really,” she said. And while soccer is her focus at the moment, the rise of women’s football has already captured her attention. She played in the South West League in Hamilton before pulling on the boots for North Gambier in the inaugural South East Women’s Football Season. She also plays touch football. Earning selection in the Under 18 State team saw Ella make her way through three gruelling trials and since getting the nod about six weeks ago she has headed to Adelaide every weekend for match practice. Locally she is coming off a huge

season where she was part of United’s senior premiership team.

Milan Hodak took out First Division with 39 points, from Roy Mitchell and Keith Couzner, both with 38. The surprise came in Second Division with Gavin Sparrow winning on 36 points, (he claims it was his first time ever) from Alan Stewart in a countback and Keith Thrussell, a distant third on 33 points (in a four way countback.) Keith Couzner and Phil Hunter won the nearest the pins. The prized Ross Orchard went to musician Alan Webster)and Jeff Nitschke. Ball rundown was to 31 points, which showed that the field struggled with the tricky greens, three and four putts being common. Not so for David Douglas, who on the ninth, bladed his chip, hit the flag and fell back into the hole for an amazing two. His group was disgusted. He putted in another twice during his round cleaning up all the side bets. On the same hole the very next group watched Alan Schultz’s ball pause on the edge, the four started counting and then it fell in with the wind behind it. The next meet is at Attamurra on December 4, and members should now be thinking about the Getaway in April, being held at Loxton, playing four Riverland courses, and staying in the Loxton Hotel/Motel. This is always a fun week away and great value for money.
