COVER - PESTCERT ACCREDITATION GIVES SPIDERMAN SE CUSTOMERS COMPLETE CONFIDENCE COMING EVENTS October 2017 marks the third birthday of our local Pest Control and Inspection Company, Spiderman SE Eco Pest Management. Established in 2014 by Michael and Sarah Cutting and Roger Hassett, we’ve built our small business from the ground up. Our brand, our people, our character and our reputation mean everything to us. We pride ourselves on being an un-franchised, local, family-owned business; providing top quality service, with attention to detail and a genuine, friendly approach. We’ve copped a blow during the year, with Naracoorte Technician, Roger having to hang up his Spiderman suit due to illness. Enter local men, Glenn Wells and Dylan Vanderhorst who have joined Michael and Sarah in the Spiderman SE team’s quest of “saving the world, one pest at a time”! Traditionally, Winter is a quieter time for the pest control industry and the Spiderman SE team has put this to good use, immersing ourselves in extra training, gaining accreditation using various specially products, with the icing on the cake being acquiring PestCert Accreditation with the Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association (AEPMA). PestCert is the Australian Pest

Management Industry’s badge of professional competence and pride. Achieving PestCert accreditation through AEPMA assures our customers that our Technicians and our business has been accredited to the highest standards. To gain PestCert accreditation, pest control operators must: • Prove they have advanced knowledge of and experience with the latest, safest, most effective pest management technologies, practices and tools, and the skills and expertise to use them the right way. • Strictly adhere to a demanding code of professional conduct which governs how they do business and deliver the highest possible quality service. • Commit to maintaining on-going, continuing professional development, requiring many hours of detailed study and advanced training. In addition, Michael has been added to the Timber Pest Inspectors Registrar, an independent initiative of AEPMA which helps consumers find a qualified, experienced and professional timber pest inspector who will provide an inspection and subsequent report, in accordance with the Prior to Purchase Timber Pest Inspection Code of Practice. For more information about PestCert and the Timber Pest Inspectors Registrar and how these accreditations assure a higher standard of service to our customers, we invite you to visit the Consumer Resource Centre at www.aepma.com.au.

THE SPIDERMAN SE DIFFERENCE We may be a small, family-owned business, but don’t let that fool you – when it comes to our skill, knowledge and the products we use in both commercial and residential situations, Spiderman SE is playing with the big boys. Add to this mix our understanding of local conditions specific to the SE of SA and SW of VIC, and you’ve got the perfect combination. Spiderman SE Eco Pest Management is the only local Pest Control company that meets all of the following Standards and accreditations: • All Spiderman SE Pre-Purchase and Timber Pest Inspections are carried out in accordance with Australian Standards (Australian Standards 3660.2-2000 and 4349.3-1998), as well as the AEPMA Code of Practice for Prior to Purchase Timber Pest Inspections. • All Pest Control Services provided to Restaurants, Cafes and Food Industry clients are done so in accordance with the Code of Practice for Pest Management in the Food Industry in Australia and New Zealand. • We DO NOT offer inferior “Visual Termite Inspections”. Our Termite and Timber Pest Inspections not only detect whether or not live termites can be found, but also evidence of previous infestations and treatments, identify high-risk areas, areas where termite activity may be concealed, moisture issues, ventilation issues, drainage issues, as well as evidence of other timber pests such as borers and fungal decay (wood rot).

DOING IT FOR THE KIDS

Ben and Kim McKinnon love surfing and adventure and quickly realised they could combine those two passions with their shared desire to get involved in volunteering. It saw the Mount Gambier couple in South Africa last month teaching surfing and they cannot recommend the experience highly enough. It also led to the chance to explore the country itself. “We really let the volunteering program dictate where we went,” Ben said. “Both being surfers and the adventurous type, teaching kids who are doing it tough to surf in South Africa made sense to us. It started out us both wanting to help out in another country knowing as Australians we have it pretty damn good.” Finding the program, which could well have been tailor made for the couple, who married in Bali last year, just took some serious research online. “We worked out the

surf program in South Africa was a way we could help out and see the country at the same time,” Ben said. The couple teed up their volunteer gig through International Volunteers HQ and they would recommend the organisation to anyone. “Anyone else wanting to do their part and help people that need it check out the IVHQ website,” Ben said. “There’s a heap of ways you can help out all over the world so get amongst it.” For Ben and Kim it saw their days filled with the sun, sand and surf. The day started with a 10am to 12noon planning session, heading out into the water as well as setting up the surf shack out of which the program ran. The afternoon was all about the kids, who arrived around 3pm. “We would greet the kids and have a quick chat before helping them pick a board and get on their wetsuits,” Kim said. “We

then walked them down to the beach and depending on their skill level we would push them into waves or give them tips and make sure they were enjoying themselves.” Not every child who attended wanted to surf but Kim and Ben had plenty of tricks in their kitbag to keep them entertained. “We would play games with them on the beach and just get to know them,” Kim said. The surfing and beach activities ran for around 90 minutes before the kids reluctantly returned to the surf shack to get out of wetsuits, pack boards away and then enjoy a meal together. “For a lot of the kids the meal we prepared was the only meal they would have for the day so they’d demolish it,” Ben said. Ben and Kim would then basically hang out with the kids until they were all picked up by their carers. “They would always give us a hug and a fist bump to

say seeya teacher,” Ben said. The couple then set about clean up, cleaning wetsuits, washing the dishes and tidying up the shack ready for the next day. On the days when the weather was not conducive to surfing, mountain hikes and basketball on the street courts were the activities of choice. Ben and Kim worked with up to 25 children a day, ranging in age from 8-12. “It was just great spending time with the kids and making them laugh and vice versa,” Ben said. “We would definitely do it again and we are looking at doing something similar next year.” Above - Ben (left) & Kim (right) McKinnon with some of the kids they volunteered with in the South African surfing program.

TWILIGHT CINEMA ON THE HORIZON

Footrot Flats is set to hit the big screen in Casterton next month as part of the Island Park celebrations to officially unveil the precinct’s recovery from last September’s floods. A big street party is planned for the celebrations, which is being hosted by the Casterton P & A Society, featuring local markets, live music and activities for children. The movie screening is part of the Portland based cinema, Twilight Cinemas, taking its movie screen on the road for a regional pop-up tour next month, bringing Hollywood movies to Glenelg Shire’s regional communities for a whirlwind fortnight season. Twilight Cinemas will be in Casterton on Friday, October 13, at Island Park, Dartmoor Recreation Reserve on Saturday, October 14, and Heathmere Recreation Reserve on Friday, October 20. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the satellite events were based on the popular Twilight Gardens pop-up

cinema event hosted by council in the Portland Botanic Gardens earlier this year. “The addition of the Portland Cinema to our shire has been a great boon for the region, providing a movie experience in our community meaning people aren’t travelling more than 100km to other centres to experience the latest blockbuster,” Cr Rank said. “With the pop-up Twilight Gardens event being such a success it was decided that regional communities could benefit from the same opportunity. Each township is putting on their own celebration, highlighting their local produce and people, whilst assisting to fundraise for an important project. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the finer weather this spring, so bring a picnic rug, a chair and enjoy the hospitality of our welcoming regional towns.” To learn more about the popup cinema event visit the Glenelg Shire Facebook page.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - YOU’LL HAVE A GAY OLD TIME.. By ROBBIE TANSEL You may remember me writing about Bob Katter a few weeks ago, and his comments accusing gay people of “stealing the most beautiful word in the English language”, that word being gay. It seems that Bob isn’t comfortable using the word gay any more. Bob went on to explain that the word had special meaning for him as it was used in a text he used for his university entrance exam. I think the most shocking thing about this is that Bob Katter went to university. He doesn’t seem very educated, although there are plenty of highly educated

people who are very stupid. The text he read Rape of the Lock, had the line, “then Belinda smiled and the whole world was gay.” Rape of the Lock doesn’t sound like a very nice name for a picture book, which is the only text I’m assuming Bob would be capable of reading. Maybe Bob should be cross at people who commit sexual assault who took a beautiful word used to describe plundering, seizing or abusing something, eg raping the countryside or the way our governments continue to rape the people of Australia with their stupidity. The other thing I’m wondering, without reading this text, is whether Bob has actually gotten the context of the sentence he quotes wrong. Bob has taken it to mean that this woman’s smile made everyone very happy, presumably because it was so nice. Is it possible that she had a hideous smile that was so horrible and disgusting that it made men turn homosexual? As far as I know, the gay community haven’t copyrighted or trademarked the word gay anyway. We’re all still welcome to use the word. I don’t think Mr Katter needs to be worried that if he says he is gay people will misunderstand what he means. The following will not happen.

“How are you going today, Bob?” “I feel positively gay actually.” “I knew it! I always thought you were a homosexual, Bob. You like wearing hats after all. Someone go and get Bob a rainbow flag and some fairy wings. Make sure you get him his gay membership card too, and an entry form for the mardi gras. No I didn’t forget the assless chaps. I thought that went without saying.” I think we’re all able to hear people saying they’re feeling gay and not giggle or titter about it like immature teenage boys. Mind you I did titter a second ago when I used the word titter. I think we’re all intelligent enough to understand what you mean from the context in which you use the word gay. For example, “Mum and Dad, there’s something I’ve been wrestling with for a number of years now. I don’t know how to tell you this, but I’m gay.” No-one will think that it has taken you a number of years to come to the realisation that you’re really happy. Likewise if you are asked how you feel and you say, “I’m gay”, no-one is likely to respond with, “No I was asking how you feel, not your sexual orientation.” The people at Streets didn’t start accusing the gay community of stealing their ice cream name. They didn’t throw their hands in the air and say, “We need to come up with a new name for the Gaytime.” They stuck to their guns because they understood there wasn’t any chance of confusion when a person went into their local ice cream shop and asked for a Gaytime. No one has ever found themselves at a Kylie Minogue concert after asking for a Gaytime at their local deli. I’ve got no proof of that, but I’m pretty sure. So I say go for it, Bob. Reclaim your favourite word gay that helped you get 84% on your HSC exam. Tell everyone how gay you are on a daily basis. And as I said last week, support gay marriage or don’t support gay marriage. Please yourself. But don’t say stupid things, don’t spread hatred, and understand that people are entitled to their own opinions, whether you agree with them or not. If you feel gay, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

FUNDRAISING EVENT FALLS ON FRIDAY THE 13TH

More than $200,000 has been raised in almost two decades since the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group was formed and the group’s annual cocktail party fundraiser is on the horizon, with tickets now on sale for the Friday, October 13 event. The group was formed in 2000 by Mount Gambier’s Leanne Kosch and Tantanoola’s Kay Holloway, and initially the major fundraising for the group was a luncheon at the Commodore on the Park. In recent years that has evolved into a cocktail party but the aim has remained the same – to carry on the outstanding work started by the inaugural committee, to continue to support women going through breast cancer and to raise much needed funds for associated medical and support services. Committee member Karen Petersen is hopeful the 2017 cocktail party will be as popular as previous events and is encouraging everyone to get their tickets now as they so often sell out. “There have been many hard working volunteers on the committee throughout the years,” Karen said. “We are committed to continuing the work of those who started this committee but have unfortunately lost their battle.” The $200,000 already raised has been filtered into a number of diverse areas, including the Millicent Hospital

Chemotherapy Room, Mount Gambier Hospital, Mount Gambier Women’s Health Program, Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group, Greenhill Lodge, Hanson Institute, Flinders Medical Centre, Calvary Hospital, the Cancer Council SA and the Breast Cancer Network Australia. The group usually has a major fundraising project on its books and at the moment, a diagnostic lymphoedema machine is in the group’s sights. “We have engaged a local physiotherapist to train and to be able to use the machine to help treat and support everyone in the community with their lymphoedema symptoms,” Karen said. “Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from other groups in Mount Gambier and many sporting organisations are keen to donate their proceeds to the cause, to help local women.” And there is always the Helping Hand Bags, which have proved a godsend to cancer patients. An initiative of Maria Knightly in 2012, the Helping Hand Bag provides financial support to women with breast cancer and contains vouchers for fuel, groceries, meat and pharmaceuticals, all purchased from local businesses. “These bags are given to our local breast care nurse, who discretely distributes them to women in the Mount Gambier and Millicent area,” Karen said. The group has handed out 153 of the bags. Tickets for the Black & Pink Party on October 13 are available from Commodore on the Park and Redgum Country. The event is sponsored by Commodore on the Park, Dzina Stem, Di Giorgio Wines and Exchange Printers and the $55 a head event included champagne on arrival, canapes, music from DJ Dave, a Redgum Country fashion parade and lucky door prizes, raffles and auction items. lifestyle1.net | 07

LITTLE BOOK BOXES A BIG SUCCESS Local children are now able to read wherever they go in the community thanks to the Little Book Boxes initiative. Twenty book boxes are now hosted by a range of local businesses across Portland and Heywood district aimed at increasing early childhood exposure to reading. A call for donations of good quality second-hand children’s books several months ago saw hundreds of books come in for sorting and selection. Jenny Elliott, one of the South West TAFE VCAL students, spent time sorting the books, ensuring only good-quality and age appropriate books are kept. “It is fun going through books that I used to read when I was younger,” she said. “I enjoy sorting through the books to make sure they are in the level range.” Jenny believes the Little Book Boxes are important as it helps younger kids and teenagers read more books with their parents and it will help them with their education. “It’s good to know that kids in our community will have fun reading these books,” said Jenny. The South West TAFE VCAL students select 30 books suitable for children from birth to teenage years for each box . The boxes are delivered to businesses and every month Jenny returns to do a health check. The Health Check involves recording the number of books taken, replenishing the box with new books and speaking to the business regarding the response of the book boxes. The books are offered free and children are encouraged to “take a book, read a book and share a book.” United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Angelinom who is also the convener of the Little Book Box program said there were “no hard and fast rules” regarding the return of the books to the boxes. “If the book becomes a cherished favourite in the home then we certainly encourage the child to keep the book,” she said. “We always welcome donations of books for the boxes to keep them fresh and interesting.” The boxes, made by timber donated from Whiteheads Timber Sales and put

together by community volunteers from the Portland Community Garden have become a welcomed presence in many businesses. Tammy KeillerBurgess, business owner from Joffyln’s Fish and Chips said the book boxes have delighted children of all ages. “Children will go to the book boxes, pick a book and ask the book to be read to them by their parent,” she said. “It’s a great way to fit in extra reading and makes the wait a little easier.” The Little Book Boxes are located in the following businesses and agencies; Jofflyn’s Fish and Chips Brophy Family Youth Services, Harbour Lights Snack Bar, Active Health Portland, Portland Laser Dentistry, The Big O Takeaway, South West TAFE, Narrawong Post Office, Winda Mara

This region is well known for its talented photographers, and capturing the natural beauty of the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria is often a focus. That makes the Nature Conservancy (TNC) Australia photogrpahy competition something that will no doubt be of interest. Now in its fourth year, entries are now open for TNC Australia’s photo competition, for photographers of all levels who enjoy capturing Australia’s natural beauty – whether it be the ocean, forests, deserts or rivers. There’s more than $8,000 in prizes to be won and there is even the rare opportunity to have a one-on-one workshop with one of the competition judges. TNC Australia Director Rich Gilmore said there’s no better way to get back to nature than grabbing your camera and embracing the photographer within. “We’ve had so many entries over the years, with people from all corners of the country getting out and taking pictures of Australia’s beautiful scenery,” he said. “This competition is a great chance for people to capture this beauty and properly appreciate nature.” There were more than 16,000

entires received last year. The winners will have their work featured online, as well as being featured in a 2018 edition of Wild – Australia’s longest-running outdoor adventure magazine. Entries will be judged by some of Australia’s most highly sought-after nature photographers including Ben Goode, Mark Seabury, Michael Snedic and Sera Wright. The competition aims to inspire Australians to engage with nature through photography, and celebrate Australia’s natural beauty. Competition categories include landscape, wildlife, water, urban nature, people in nature, and whacky wildlife. There will also be a People’s Choice winner, so even if you’re not a photographer, you will still be able to participate by voting for your favourite photo. To learn more or enter a photo, visit natureaustralia.org.au/photo The Nature Conservancy Australia Photo Competition runs until October 27.

TRUCKING INDUSTRY’S GREATEST CHARITY EVENT Competitive tension is steadily building within Australian truck, transport and forest industry ranks, as the fifth annual Fennell Forestry Truck

Pull Challenge draws close. The event is the initiative of Mount Gambier harvest and haulage contractor Fennell Forestry and will be held at the Glenburnie

Proudly sponsored by

Friday 13th October, 2017 6.00pm – 8.00pm DW WKH 0W *DPELHU 3XEOLF /LEUDU\ 7LFNHWV HDFK (includes pizza and a drink) Tickets available from Mt. Gambier Police Station

Saleyards on October 14. It has captured the hearts and the support of many local businesses and community members since it started in 2013, raising $60,000 for children’s charity Variety. The event has also gained plenty of national attention, both from within the industry and further afield. Adelaide-based Strength Syndicate members and Strongman enthusiasts Jordan Steffens (pictured top right) and Steph Davies will travel to Mount Gambier to pull the truck and entertain the crowd with some heavy pine log lifts on the day. As always, a lengthy list of generous local sponsors have pledged their support, including inaugural major sponsors the Barry Maney Group and Trident Tyre Centre. Fennell Forestry managing director and event organiser Wendy Fennell said the Truck Pull had grown to become the industry’s “unofficial charity event of the year”. “This event brings together timber and transport executives and workers from across Australia and the world, right here in the heart of the Green Triangle forest region,” she said. “Add to this the fact that we are raising money for a very worthy children’s charity and you’ve got an event which our community is very willing to support. It’s win-win.” As in other years, the challenge will feature teams of six, a 100m course and a 23 tonne Kenworth B-Double. Each of six team members will be harnessed and attached to ropes anchored to

the truck’s front grill. It will be brute strength alone that pulls the truck and the unloaded Thinwall chip trailer along the course and over the finish line. As the captain of last year’s winning Fennell Forestry team, Ms Fennell’s advice to those competing was simple. “Your legs will burn and you will want to give up long before the truck rolls over the finish line,” Ms Fennell said. “But you’ve got to push through.

It’s about camaraderie, community, good old fashioned fun and doing your bit for Variety. You’ve just got to keep putting one foot in front of the other.” The action begins at 10.30am at the Glenburnie Saleyards on Saturday, October 14. Entry is free. For past event videos and photographs, to find out more or make a donation, visit the official event Facebook page:www. facebook.com/FennellForestryTruckPull.

MUSICAL TREAT FOR BRASS BAND LOVERS The musical notes of trumpets, trombones and saxophones are heading to the Glenelg Shire this month as part of a new partnership with Orchestra Victoria. With support through the Victorian Government’s Engaging Audiences program, Orchestra Victoria’s Brass Section will be visiting Portland and Casterton from October 9-11 for a workshop program known as ‘Class of Brass!’ The unique workshop program will provide professional development for local musicians, as well as offering a series of free live performances. Glenelg Shire Council arts and culture manager Susie Lyons said that the partnership was particularly significant for the region as it will be the first time that the orchestra has hosted brass workshops for local musicians in the shire. “We are incredibly excited to welcome Orchestra Victoria to our region to help enhance the skills of our talented local brass bands,” she said. “Orchestra Victoria will work with members from the Portland Citizens Brass Band and the Casterton Vice Regal Band, allowing members to learn new skills and techniques from some of Victoria’s most acclaimed musicians.” The Portland Citizens Brass Band and Casterton Vice Regal Band are amongst the oldest bands in Victoria having been in operation for 160 years and more than 140 years respectively. “While these incredible volunteer bands maintain active education programs and busy performance schedules, opportunities for the musicians to gain professional

experience or progress their skills can be limited,” she said. “This partnership will give our local players access to some of the state’s best musicians and help them take that next step in their music journey. We will begin plans to ensure the connection continues with future visits to the region.” Ms Lyons said that the regional tour by Orchestra Victoria would also culminate in a series of free concerts, allowing residents right across the shire to access world class brass performances. Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley said the project will provide significant benefits to the local community and Orchestra Victoria. “Victoria is the creative state and the Victorian Government is committed to ensuring that all Victorians have access to the best creative experiences no matter where they live.,” Mr Foley said. “We are proud to support this project which will see local musicians gain first-hand knowledge from some of the state’s best musicians. It will also see Orchestra Victoria gaining new audiences in Portland, Casterton and beyond. Congratulations to the Glenelg Shire on this ground-breaking project. We look forward to seeing – and hearing – the results.” The free Orchestra Victoria brass section concerts will take place at the following locations across the Glenelg Shire: • Casterton Town Hall - Tuesday, October 10, 11am • Portland Arts Centre - Wednesday, October 11, 11am No pre-bookings or ticket sales

NOSTALGIC END TO 40TH ANNVIERSARY PINES ENDURO The 40th anniversary Teagles Excavations ARB Pines Enduro was always about saluting the past as much as it was the present and future and in a wonderful piece of synergy, Tyler Owen and Oliver Stephens claimed outright honours, 24 years after their grandfather Reg Owen greeted the chequered flag. The cousins’ victory added to the nostalgia of the event that paid homage to those who had created it, developed it and put it on the off road racing map. Owen and Stephens piloted Uncle Matt’s #41 Alumi Craft, and it was their inaugural outright win, snatching the victory from last year’s champions Matt Hanson and Leigh Wells, who suffered power steering issues on the last lap. It was a nail biting finish with Owen and Stephens edging out the titleholders by

just 5.050seconds, which after 462km of gruelling off road racing through the region’s pine forests was a narrow winning margin. Danny Brown and George Apted hold onto third outright after the #42 Jimco got bogged in slow corner on the last lap. The weekend provided a snapshot of all four seasons and therefore, all racing conditions, from clear skies and sunshine to the deluge of rain. The sand track through the forest absorbed the rain and the drainage work done but the Millicent Sand Buggy Club and Teagle Excavations to the quarry track, coupled with the wind, saw slippery and challenging conditions for drivers, but great viewing for the large crowd of spectators.
