COVER - SECOND GENERATION STARTS NEW CHAPTER OF FAMILY BUSINESS SUCCESS STORY
COMING EVENTS
PETROL HEADS PICNIC LADY NELSON TOURIST CENTRE MOUNT GAMBIER September 30 (Pictured)
To last in business almost three decades is a success story in itself. When you do it side by side with family, it is even more special and that is exactly what Paxford Canvas Products has done. Celebrating 27 years in business this month, it was family patriarch Warren Paxford that started the business back in 1990, and now daughter Natalie, who was three months old when the doors first opened, is the owner, seeing a second generation of the Paxford family in charge. Specialising in custom made ute canopies, boat canopies, annexes and Tonneau covers, Paxford Canvas Products also make truck tarps, including nets, rollover tarps and retractable tarps. “Basically we can also cover almost anything you need out of canvas or PVC products,” Natalie said. That includes custom made bags and blinds and everything is manufactured on site. She has been working alongside her father, full time, since 2010, first
obeying the family rule of gaining some experience elsewhere before joining the family business. “I went and completed a traineeship elsewhere before coming across to help,” Natalie said. “Dad has run this business successfully for 25 years and when he started talking about slowing down I decided I was interested in seeing if I could run it as well as he did.” And so Natalie is now in charge, taking care of a business set up by her parents, who were the original and only staff at the time, that has grown to employee six staff. Two of the cornerstones of the Paxford Canvas Products success story has been quality products and excellent customer service and that remains the case almost three decades down the track. They have also looked after their staff, who are basically like part of the family, with two of the staff members having been in the business for 24 years each. “Working with family isn’t always easy but at the end of the day we make it

PORTLAND MAKING ITS MARK AS CRUISE SHIP DESTINATION Portland has been showcased as Australia’s newest major regional cruise destination at Australia’s biggest cruise conference in Queensland this month. Glenelg Shire Council, in partnership with the Port of Portland, met some of the world’s biggest cruise operators at the Australian Cruise Association Conference. A new promotional video and booklet highlighting Portland’s key tourist attractions and opportunities for on-shore excursions was shared at the two-day conference at Mooloolaba where key industry figures learnt about future opportunities to grow the sector. Glenelg Shire tourism and marketing manager Liz McKinnon said the conference provided networking opportunities, creating new relationships with cruise operators and other regional ports. “It was clear to our team that Portland has a unique offering – one of the best in regional Australia showcasing three iconic locations, including the 12 Apostles, Coonawarra Wine Region and Grampians National Park,” she said. “When you look at this in conjunction with our deep-sea port, which is accessible to large vessels on a dedicated berth, this places us at a strategic advantage over many other regional locations. Whilst this is an extremely competitive industry, with many new regional ports competing for new schedules, our team is confident that Portland will continue to attract new ships well into the future.” Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank
said collaboration was the key word of the conference. “Moving forward we realise that to remain competitive in this market we must work with our neighbours in South Australia, Tasmania and indeed New Zealand, to ensure southern ports are prominently recognised by cruise operators,” she said. “The Port of Portland is working in close collaboration with council to ensure it is front and centre in consideration by all operators as they plan for the next two to five years. There are a number of new operators coming into the market and Portland is being showcased as a must-see destination.” Port of Portland business
development manager Kara King said Portland’s unique offering as a regional destination was being further enhanced by the strong connections between council, community and the port. “Portland has proved it can provide cruise ship passengers with a terrific experience because we all work together on the day,” she said. “The conference was a great opportunity to look at Portland’s offering and compare it to other regional destinations to see how we can offer something more in the future.” To view Portland’s new cruise ship promotional video and brochure visit www.glenelg.vic.gov.au/cruiseships

ROLE OF A LIFETIME
Euan Doidge as Felicia on the cruise ship, the Norwegian Epic.
A week after his last call back, Euan Doidge got the news that was music to his ears – he had secured the role of Felicia in the 10th Anniversary Australian Production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It is a role he has played before on the Norwegian Epic cruise liner but the Regent Theatre production, which is where Priscilla will start its Australian run in January next year, is the full version. “It is different to the version we did on the cruise ship,” Euan said. “It is the full version which I am really excited about.” Excited, too, to be working alongside musical theatre royalty in David Harris, who is playing Tick, and legend Tony Sheldon, reprising his role as Bernadette. “I worked with David (Harris) on Legally Blonde,” Euan said. “But we will be working a lot closer together this time round.” And Euan will find it hard to morph from fan to co-star when he starts rehearsals midDecember alongside Sheldon. “It is so exciting to have Tony (Sheldon) coming back to Australia to do this show,” Euan said. “Tony has played this role all over the world and made it his own.” Euan is still reeling from the overwhelmingly positive feedback to his most recent work in Kinky Boots. “A lot of people that don’t normally come to musicals have seen Kinky Boots and to see the audience leave with such a massive smile on their face and their spirits lifted is all we can ask for,” Euan said. “I think following that up with Priscilla, at a time like this, I know people will just love this show.” Moving from Kinky Boots basically straight into Priscilla rehearsals is just how Euan likes things to be, as his career continues to rollick along with limited time away from work, in an industry, where finding work in the first place, can be challenging. “I love to be busy,” he said. “I’m always searching for something else to do. I’m not the type of person that finishes a show and can be in limbo. I need something to go on to. I am always wanting to better myself in every aspect of performing.” Tickets on sale now from priscillathemusical. com.au

I’m one of those people who have quite a nasty case of foot in mouth disease. There aren’t many days that go by without me saying something offensive. I don’t go out of my way to upset people, but I probably can’t claim that I try very hard not to offend people either. When I wrote my typically ill-informed article last week, expressing my typically poorly thought out and ignorant opinions about gay marriage, I thought I’d upset a few people and get some emails as a consequence. I wasn’t disappointed. Many years ago, people used to have a sense of humour. People also used to be prepared to let other people have their own opinions. They could respectfully discuss their different viewpoints and perform a quaint ancient tradition of agreeing to disagree. There’s nothing wrong with people voting no to gay marriage and nothing wrong with people voting yes to gay marriage. Honestly, make up your own mind. Don’t express hateful thoughts one way or the other, and accept that we’re all different. Sometimes it doesn’t matter what side of an issue you take, it will upset people. I found myself in another discussion this week where there was nothing I could say that wasn’t offensive. I was with a group of friends including men and women. One
of my friends suggested she needed some money. Someone within the group suggested she could take up the world’s oldest profession (being paid for Hungarian folk dancing…wink wink, nudge nudge). He’s one of those people who say inappropriate things but every one knows it’s so outrageous that it’s only a joke. I thought I’d join in the good natured, highly inappropriate joke by commenting that, “I don’t know that you’d make a lot of money from it,” indicating that she wasn’t attractive. Obviously this was a joke because no one can really say nasty things like that to another person’s face. I noticed immediately that she was a bit disappointed with what I said. I’m not insensitive. I have good social awareness I immediately decided I’d try to solve the problem. She didn’t like being told she’d be a bad street walker. Easy fix. “No, you’d be a great hooker,” I said. She still looked disappointed. “I’m sure
SCHOLARSHIP
you’d have lots of guys wanting to have fun with you.” Still no change in her disappointed facial expression. “I bet you’d be really good at it,” I said. Quite clearly telling someone they’d be good at doing that is no better than telling someone they’d be bad at it. There is no opinion that you can give that is helpful in any way. Another time I had my foot in my mouth recently was when I was explaining to people that the birthing process is more difficult for the dad than the mum. For starters the mum is laying down in the bed relaxing. She also gets all the good drugs. Everyone is trying to look after her and make her comfortable. The dad doesn’t get offered ice chips or a glass of water. No, that’s only for the mum. Meanwhile the poor dad is on his feet the whole time. I spent hours waving a wet flannel as a fan to keep Donna comfortable. Let’s just say, it was one of the toughest days of my life. There might be times when you can say that but it’s not when your wife/partner is spending the afternoon having a Tupperware party with all of her best girlfriends. That stuff hurts when large quantities of it is thrown at you. I guess you can’t keep everyone happy all of the time. If you have a mouth that you can’t control email robbietansel@gmail.com

It is a tradition along our coastal towns ahead of the impending fishing season - the annual Blessing of the Fleet. Beachport’s cermony will be on Sunday, October 1, and is a service followed by the annual drive by the jetty of the fishing fleet for a blessing after which the opportunity to dive for the cross occurs. Port MacDonnell will also bless its fleet this weekend. Check local council websites & facebook pages for more details. The Blessing of the Fleet at Robe was earlier this month.

LIMESTONE COAST WINE SHOW ALMOST SETS NEW ENTRY RECORD Entries for the 2017 Limestone Coast Wine show have fallen just four bottles short of a new record. Judging for the 17th annual event will again take place at the Coonawarra Hall from October 23, and tickets for the October 26 trophy presentation feast are now on sale. The popular dinner is always a sell-out, with this year’s soiree set to be hosted by the Padthaway Wine Region. Speakers on the night will include chief of judges, Jane Faulkner, guest international judge Sarah Ahmed from the UK, and backto-back winner of the Viticulturist of the Year trophy, Peter Balnaves (pictured above). LUCINDALE STUDENTS SHINE A SHOW Year 12 student Dana Clutterbuck was awarded Champion Experienced Handler in the South Australian Young Beef Breeders School Handler Class.
Lucindale Area School Sheep team with a fleece from their Merino wethers.
Lucindale Area School students have once again enjoyed a successful show with 34 students being selected from Years 8 – 12 to attend and compete in the Royal Adelaide Show. This year has seen the school exhibit Angora goats, Merino wethers and steers. Six students were also chosen to participate in the DECD Ag Learning Centre. For the first time in a number of years, Lucindale Area School was again competing in the School Wine competition with eight wine labels entered, thanks to the close working relationship the students have with
DiGiorgio Family Wines to produce a cabernet sauvignon. Lucindale Area School goat team exhibited six goats supplied by Aanaarden Park Angoras. They received 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Adult Wether Goat competition and 1st and 2nd in the Doe under 14 months class. Shari Vickers placed 3rd in the Junior Handlers class and Isabella Stock placed 2nd in the State Angora Young Judges Final, and will now go on to the National Angora Young Judges Competition next year. The school exhibited two pens in the School Merino Wether competition, and the students were
awarded 5th place for the meat carcass value. Angelique Dellaney was awarded Champion Prime SAMM Young Judge and Jack Walker placed second overall. The Merino wethers were supplied by Andrew Michael, of Leahcim. Year 12 student Dana Clutterbuck was awarded Champion Experienced Handler in the South Australian Young Beef Breeders School Handler Class. The support of David and Katrina Copping - Cannawigra Poll Herefords, Clarrie Pike - Yaccamoo Charolais, Regan and Karen Burow - Yerwal Estate Simmental and Angus Stud and Stuart and Natalie Hann – Nampara Angus Stud with supplying cattle and assisting us in preparing both the cattle and students with their expertise around handling, showing and dietary needs was again invaluable. A Young Judges Day, organised by Amanda Lock, in Naracoorte, also helped
the students prepare for the Royal Adelaide Show. Steph Brooker Jones, from Elders Lucindale, also came in to talk to the students about the different fleece types and what they should be looking for when judging the fleeces.

HELPING YOU SAY GOODBYE
South East Funeral Services was established in 1971; moving to its current location at 1 White Avenue, Mount Gambier in 1975 and serves both Mount Gambier and Casterton, and the broader Limestone Coast community. Barney McArlein and the team collectively have over 45 years of years of experience in end of life services. “The whole team live within the towns we serve and that’s important in delivering services to a community we love, and working with people that we know and understand,” Barney said. “It takes a special type of person to work with grieving families in delivering funeral services; it is more like a vocation than a profession, but for us it is a very rewarding thing to help families through the end of life journey of a loved one. Knowing so many people in our region, can make it hard when dealing with a loss within one of their families, but, they appreciate a service run by someone they know.” South East Funeral Services has a permanent staff of four and two casuals, and are available to the community 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The premises at 1 White Avenue in Mount Gambier, which includes a non-denominational chapel, and a Refreshments Lounge, has recently had some refurbishments to update the look and feel of the place. “Our refurbishments will allow us to provide more options to our clients in more updated surroundings,” Barney said. The funeral industry is changing and the perception and expectations of families and individuals are changing. The movement from burial to cremation, more personalised services, some people choosing less religious services or, simply a memorial. These changes are becoming more pronounced with baby boomers who want more of a say in how their funerals
will be conducted and what that service says about them. The traditional funeral director needs to adapt their services to cater for these different expectations. The choice of their final journey is also something we can personalise at South East Funerals with a choice of a Ford Hearse, Harley Hearse, or customised Chev Hearse, all provided at no extra cost to the family.
The team at South East Funeral Services hopes to be able to continue the legacy of the original founders; while adapting to the changing needs of a community that continues to change. Above - Choice of three hearses - Harley Hearse; 2008 Ford Hearse & 1964 Belair Hearse.

marketing officer Teena White said the company’s philosophy is to design and build a property of the highest standard in a beautiful setting. “The estates are a real village environment, with extensive facilities and provide security, comfort, companionship, and peace of mind for the residents,” she said. “Both estates are designed to impress people from all walks of life. You can “lock up and leave” when you go on holidays and your home and garden is looked after for you while you are away. “There are many opportunities to fulfil your interests and hobbies both within the estate and in the wider community of Mount Gambier and districts,” said Ms White. “We have a lot of active retirees as well as a number of semi-retired people, who enjoy an active lifestyle, with the benefits of living in a secure estate. For those who love to participate in activities, we have tai chi; lawn bowls on-site; cards; line dancing; aqua aerobics in the on-site pools; a craft group; a book club, and a golf practice range on-site. Each estate has its own residents’ committee and each of the estates’ committees organise their own activities. The estates can offer as much company as you choose to enjoy. There is always something happening or someone to chat to; this is an ideal opportunity to meet like-minded residents often forming close friendships. However, when you feel the need for your own company the sanctuary of your home is both private and secure. If you are looking more for peace and tranquillity, each estate includes a tranquil lake setting, delightful gardens and immaculately trimmed lawns and your privacy is always respected: your home is your sanctuary.” If you would like to make an appointment to come and see the estates for yourself for more information call us today on (08)8726 2300.

END OF THE LINE FOR TRADITIONAL TV GUIDE
TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS
v
For many years now, the TV Guide has been an integral part of your weekly Lifestyle1 but for a number of reasons, it is no longer the best use of that space. Increasingly, the television stations are not finalising their programming by the time Lifestyle1 goes to print and that has resulted in a TV Guide that has contained a large percentage of missing information, as well as inaccuracies, with late changes to programming. People’s viewing habits have also changed with Roy Morgan Research revealing that streaming on demand, You Tube or internet TV through a settop box, half of Australians now have paid television options in the home. “It is not a decision we made lightly,” sales director Duncan McGregor said. Requests had also come from some
customers to include the raft of Pay TV options, including Foxtel and Netflix, but the practicalities of space and how to best utilise those pages made that unviable as well. “We want the magazine to focus on the community and telling stories about the people, places and events that are happening right across the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria,” Mr McGregor said. “Being able to use the space previously allocated to the TV Guide to include stories and photos that are of greater interest to a wider audience appears to be the way forward.” More than 80 percent of homes also have televisions that incorporate the TV Guide as part of its many functions. “A printed TV Guide for many people now is obsolete,” Mr McGregor said. lifestyle1.net | 32
Pumpkin & goat’s cheese pie 2 sheets frozen puff pastry 650g butternut pumpkin 120g goat’s cheese, crumbled 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
4 eggs 160ml (2/3 cup) thickened cream 185ml (3/4 cup) milk Small mixed lettuce leaves, to serve
Method Preheat oven to 220°C/200°C fan forced. Lightly grease a 23cm (base measurement) fluted tart tin and line with the pastry, pressing well into the side. Place on a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes or until light golden. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly. Use your hands to press down on the base to flatten. If desired, use a sharp knife to trim the excess pastry. Meanwhile, use a very sharp knife or mandolin to thinly slice the pumpkin. Starting on the outside and working your way in, arrange the pumpkin in the pastry shell in a rosette pattern. Scatter the goat’s cheese over the pumpkin. Sprinkle with the thyme. Reduce oven to 170°C/150°C fan forced. Whisk together the eggs, cream and milk in a bowl. Season. Carefully pour over the pumpkin. Bake for 30 minutes or until firm. Season. Serve with lettuce leaves.

After experiencing one of its worst flood events in more than two decades this time last year, Casterton is on the mend, with key infrastructure set to be unveiled as the recovery effort winds up. The September 2016 floods all but destroyed 10 properties with a further 50 surrounded by flood waters as the Glenelg River peaked at more than six metres. Damage to buildings and roads saw a $5million dollar bill accrued but with the Glenelg Shire Council making rebuilding a priority, the task has been achieved in a year. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said Casterton’s recovery had been a collaborative effort between council and the community. “I commend the local community, as well as council workers and emergency service agencies for their work ethic and ongoing support to rebuilding the township,” Cr Rank said. “Council attracted State Government funding which has assisted in the recovery, assuring the fast tracking of building replacements, replacement of damaged
infrastructure and reconstruction of roads.” One of those replacement buildings – the Island Park multipurpose changerooms and meeting facility adjacent the netball courts was unveiled at the weekend when the Casterton Sandford Football Netball Club hosted the 2017 Western Border grand finals. To better plan for the impending extreme weather season with both flood and fire, council is hosting the Glenelg Emergency Management conference next month. Hosted at the Casterton Town Hall on Saturday, October 7, from 9.30am–3pm, the conference will hear from local emergency service agencies about how to manage floods and bushfires. The day will include children’s activities, plus a free lunch and bus trip of Casterton to learn about planned burning on private and public land. To register call 1300GLENELG (1300 453 635), email enquiry@glenelg.vic.gov.au or drop into a Glenelg Shire Customer Service Centre at Portland, Heywood or Casterton by September 29. lifestyle1.net | 33
It was an initiative introduced last year and on October 14 this year, the second group of Tenison Woods College Shining Lights will be honoured at a gala dinner presentation. A scheme instigated to honour the achievements of former scholars, families or staff, The Friends of the Tenison Woods College (Old Scholars Association) are hoping interested members of the school and general community will join them for the Main Corner function to honour the five 2017 recipients. “Tenison Woods College and its predecessors, St Paul’s School, Tenison College, Marist Brothers Agricultural College, Mater Christi College, St Mary’s School and St Joseph’s College value the contributions of all community members, past and present and we think it’s important to recognise some of the stand out achievements within the community,” said college principal David Mezinec. A forestry icon, a popular educator and active community volunteer, an international sports star, an aeronautical genius, and a passionate advocate are set to join the Shining Light honour roll. Noel Bull graduated in 1976 and has gone on to make his mark on the land and in the forestry industry Noel Bull, Pauline Kenny, Natalie Medhurst, Robert Peake and Maurice Corcoran will be recognised for their contribution to this community and further afield at the October 14 presentation and Lifestyle1 will catch up with each of the recipients to tell their story. Past and present staff, students, families and friends of the Tenison Woods College community are invited to attend the evening to celebrate these five outstanding recipients. Tickets are available online at www.ticketebo.com.au/ shininglight. The College is also hosting a BBQ lunch and tour on Sunday 15 October from 12.30pm.
