COVER - SALTS OF THE EARTH MOUNT GAMBIER CLAIMS ANOTHER AWARD Cathy Beckman is no stranger to awards. Over the past 18 months, since opening the doors of the only South Australian Salts of the Earth centre, she has worked her way to being one of the top three Salts of the Earth franchises in Australia – that took only three months - and also taken out a State Franchise Award and is headed to the national event. But arguably taking out Business Woman of the Year at the Limestone Coast Women in Business and Regional Development Awards earlier this month is the one she treasures the most. “This award definitely has meant more to me than the State award,” Cathy said. “That was amazing to win a State award out of all of South Australia but to be recognised with your peers in your own community and to be considered successful for what you have introduced to the community does make you feel so good.” Cathy has made no secret of the fact, opening the salt clinic was a huge risk and the Salts of the Earth CEO agreed, openly admitting he didn’t think it was a good idea. If it wasn’t for Cathys’ franchise manager who told him if he met Cathy and saw her passion and belief that he would change his mind, Salts of the Earth wouldn’t be here. “It was a risk and I wasn’t sure how something different would be received by the community and if people were ready for new things,” she said. But they were. “I am so thankful for the community’s support,” Cathy said. “It’s

a credit to Mount Gambier and the community to see the support that everyone gives local business and local business people. They are open to try new initiatives and our salt centre and all that it offers has been well received.” Interestingly, Cathy wasn’t planning on opening a new business when Salts of the Earth appeared on her radar. “It was quite by accident,” she said. “I was looking for salt lamps and then I was in Geelong visiting a friend and when we went for a walk we passed a Salts of the Earth centre so I went in and had a look around.” That was followed by extensive research and the wheels were set in motion. “I really believed in the therapy,” Cathy said. “I thought it could really help a lot of people here.” Helping with conditions including asthma, sinus, hay fever and eczema, anxiety, depression, sleeping disorders and snoring, just to name a few, Salts of the Earth salt rooms are making a difference, making for a thriving business and ticking the boxes Cathy likes to tick. “I always look for things where I can help people,” the former beauty and massage therapist said. “Coming to work each day is so rewarding. This was meant to cross my path and be the next chapter for me.” It has made the rigorous five stage process she had to go through to open the doors of South Australia’s only Salts of the Earth all worthwhile. From creating best and worst case scenario business plans to visits to Melbourne,

KILBARRI KINDERTGARTEN QUIZ NIGHT Cathy finally received the go ahead and she hit the ground running. “I saw it was a challenge,” Cathy said. “Even before we opened I was networking, and going out into the community and talking about salt therapy and educating people and the first week we opened we had people already booked in and we were growing a database of clients to work with.” And happy clients have translated into the awards and honours. “Winning these awards will inspire me to keep working to bridge the gap between health professionals and natural therapies so we can help to make a difference to people’s health and well

ABC SOUTH EAST RECOGNISES ABORIGINAL CONNECTION WITH LAND

A Recognition of Country plaque has been unveiled in the ABC South East building in Mount Gambier acknowledging that the station sits on the traditional land of the Boandik people. The design on the blue glass plaque was developed by Elders and young people involved with the Re-Engage group at the Pangula Mannamurna Aboriginal Corporation. The design depicts the Blue Lake and was inspired by symbols burnt into the traditional possum skin cloak worn by Elder Aunty Michelle Jaquelin-Furr. She unveiled the plaque with help from youth participant Jedd Williams, ABC South East chief of staff Stuart Stansfield and the ABC’s Regional Editor for SA, the NT and Broken Hill Anthony Gerace. “The plaque has pride

of place in our office and will serve as permanent acknowledgement that this building sits on traditional Boandik country, Mr Stansfield said. Jade Maiden, from Pangula Mannamurna, told the gathering the plaque design process started with Elders and young people coming together to discuss reconciliation, culture and country. The young people then started drawing designs representing what reconciliation meant to them. About 25 Aboriginal community members attended the unveiling together with members of the ABC South East team. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS CONTINUE AS RAIL LANDS ARE LINKED TO OLYMPIC PARK

The $300,000 City of Mount Gambier walkway project linking Margaret Street and the Railway Lands is now complete. The major project has transformed the historical industrial building on site into a pedestrian thoroughfare, toilet and storage shed. “It links directly from the central plaza area in the Railway Lands through to Olympic Park. The idea there is that for a significant event that requires additional parking or access, you can park and walk through to the Railway Lands, City of Mount Gambier Manager Development and Regulatory Michael Silvy said. “We’ve recycled all the floorboards from the original building and now they are part of a new

deck area. We’ve also reused the timber from the old floor to build internal frames and balustrading. It’s a showcase of what can be done to an old building to give it a new lease of life. In addition to revitalising the heritage structure, additional paving and landscaping was undertaken to blend in with the main plaza area of the Railway Lands. Page was last in town during the Mount Gambier Fringe and he regularly has returned to the South East to share his talent and story with young musicians. Songstress Tamara Seeley, who is prominent at major local events throughout the region, and so often performs at local haunts including hotels and cafes, is in the running for Most Popular Pop Artist, on the back of her popular single Old Skool Love. Head to the Music SA website to cast your vote and get these two locals over the line. Last year, grunge act Recreator flew the flag for the region, coming home with one of the gongs. CANCER FUNDRAISER TO HONOUR INSPIRATIONAL NURSE Everyone deserves a lifetime is the theme of a Cancer Council SA fundraiser being held in Mount Gambier at the end of next month. The sad fact of the matter is not everyone gets to enjoy that lifetime and that’s why Anja Didsbury has put together this fundraising event to raise funds to support the Cancer Council and the vital work it undertakes, and to honour her Aunty Robyn. Popular Mount Gambier Hospital theatre nurse Robyn Messenger sadly lost her battle with cancer last month, having fought the insidious disease two times prior before it claimed her life. It was the final straw for Anja, who as a nurse, has seen her share of cancer and it stung her into action. “Even though I can’t help my Aunty Robyn personally, the money raised will make a contribution to discover a cure,

so no one else has to watch their loved ones battle cancer,” Anja said. She has also watched her grandfather battle brain cancer and since starting as a carer at Boandik Lodge as a 21 year old, before embarking on her nursing career, Anja was getting a clear picture of how cancer affects not just the individual but a community. “During my time at Boandik Lodge nearly one third of the residents I cared for passed away from cancer,” Anja said. “I not only saw how it affected the person diagnosed but also saw the devastating effects on their families and loved ones.” There is no doubt all these experiences have shaped Anja into the nurse she is today and also the person who now desperately wants to play her role in combating cancer and its flow on effects. The September 30 gala event will be held at Thyme at the Lakes and the $80 a head function will include canapés, dinner, a comedy show, fashion parade, silent auction and live music, including Ellyana Sims, who at only 15 years old has been touched by cancer in her family more than once, and who has used the launch of her debut EP my own race to raise funds for the Leukaemia Association and its Adelaide accommodation facility. “My Aunty Robyn is my inspiration,” Anja said, “If I could grow to become half the nurse and person she was I would be grateful, Despite months of ongoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and deteriorating health, she kept a warm smile on her face and retained a positive outlook on life.” Robyn’s

SCHOLARSHIP FOR LOCAL TEENAGE PILOT

demeanour was even more creditable given she battled cancer on and off for more than two decades. Anja is set to auction her hair on the night as part of the fundraising evening, which starts at 6pm. “I was tired of feeling helpless,” Anja said. “That’s why I decided I just had to do something.” Anja is still looking for auction items and also has a direct donation process set up for those who want to give but might not be able to attend. You can contact Anja at agardsenni@y7mail.com for more details or head to www.facebook.com/ allforthecure and follow the link to make an online donation or to purchase tickets you need to head to www. eventbrite.com.au and search Everyone Deserves A Lifetime. Learning to fly is not a cheap past time so 16 year old Breydon VerrytReid jumped at the chance to apply for a Recreational Aviation Australia Inc. Scholarship. “My instructor Jo (Tregoweth) told me the scholarship opportunity was available and it might be worth a try,” Breydon said. And so, with the help of Gambi Air’s Jo Tregoweth, Breydon, who comes from a disadvantaged background, applied and the good news is he was successful. “I received $2500 and that’s quite a few flying lessons and books and instruction time,” Breydon said. And he knows the value of this scholarship given how hard he has had to work to save up to afford his flying lessons to this point. He caught the flying bug on a family holiday to Queensland in 2012. “Getting to fly was so exciting,” Breydon said.

“And my uncle also used to have a pilot’s licence and I talked to him about what I wanted to do.” Breydon officially started lessons in August last year and has clocked up almost 10 hours of flying time, which is why the scholarship, which he received last month, is so invaluable. Family illness and extensive work commitments, along with his schooling, has certainly meant flying has had to take a back seat in this first 12 months. The scholarship now has him looking forward to completing around another six to eight hours flying and then he will be at a point where he can fly solo. “I am really looking forward to that,” Breydon said. He is yet to decide if flying is set to play a key role in his future carer, but it is certainly one of the options on the table. Breydon finds the theory side of his training reasonably easy but admits, the practical aspects are challenging – it’s a challenge on which he is thriving though. The Tenison Woods College student is aiming to get around a half hour session of theory and a half hour of flying in the coming week to work his way towards that highly anticipated solo flight. Gambi Air’s Jo Tregoweth said she became aware of the scholarship opportunity through social media and the Recreational Aviation Australia Inc. website and with quite a contingent of teenage students learning to fly through the Mount Gambier based school, she wanted them to try and access any assistance possible for what is an expensive past time. “Some of our students are in it for fun and some for a career but they all really love it and do a great job,” she said. “Breydon is a very mature young man and he was a great candidate for a scholarship and is deserving of this. He shows a lot of leadership qualities.” Breydon is already putting those qualities to good use, managing the local air force cadet squadron. Breydon secured one of 43 scholarship awarded Australia-wide. Above - Breydon Verryt-Reid sits comfortably in the cockpit of a Gambi Air Flying School plane ready for a lesson.

CELEBRATING ALL THINGS JANE AUSTEN

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - WHO RUNS THE WORLD?... By ROBBIE TANSEL

Jane Austen fans are invited to travel back to a bygone era and experience the fashion from another century as part of an upcoming exhibition in the Glenelg Shire. From August 17 to September 14 the Glenelg Libraries will play host to the Be Persuaded exhibition, a Jane Austen inspired collection curated by the Dressing Australia Museum of Costume. Acting information and library services manager Tanya Flockhart said that the one of a kind exhibition was a must see for Austen lovers. “Be Persuaded follows Jane’s life, the unforgettable characters she created and the rare fashion accessories and ephemera from the 18th century,” she said. “Pieces such as these are rarely on display outside of major museums. There is an 18th century silk gown, empire line frocks, spencers, capes and shawls, boots, bonnets and parasols everything a lady of the era could have possibly wanted. “Accompanying the exhibition will be a number of Jane Austen inspired events to help celebrate her 200th anniversary in style. “All community members are invited to attend these free events however, just like 18th century etiquette, providing an RSVP is a must.”

Let me answer the question I posed as the title for this article. Nerds run this world. I’d like to make it clear that I love nerds. That’s largely me sucking up so that when they realise they rule the world, they might look after yours truly. I had an encounter with a nerd this week. It happened because I transferred over to the NBN, the National Broadband Network. I mainly decided to make the change because it is going to save me some money. I don’t really care if it takes me 0.5 or 0.2 of a second for my Adult Fans of Beanie Kids website to open. I have absolutely no idea about bandwidths and upload speeds, but if I can save sixty bucks a month, you can count me in. I received my new router in the mail, and as I understand it, it had already been pre-programmed to make things easier for me. I believe a nerd did the pre-programming, the first reason I love nerds. I wouldn’t have any hope of programming a router myself. On the day when another nerd did the official changeover of my internet from ADSL to NBN, I hooked up my new router and started following the instructions to ensure all of the devices in my house would be able

to access wireless internet. I did have the added complication of setting my phone up as a VOIP phone. I’m pretty sure a nerd came up with that very useful acronym. Initially things were going fine and I had wireless happening on my laptop. Complications started developing when my VOIP phone didn’t seem to be working. This was the point when I decided, “I’m not stupid. I can probably work this out.” I wonder if nerds are better than me at understanding their limitations. I was kidding myself. I had no hope of solving this problem. Sure enough, I made things worse. I quickly grew impatient with the fact I wasn’t solving the problem. Nerds are more patient. They get used to being patient due to things like getting hung from wall hooks by their underwear and having to wait for someone to get them down.

I on the other hand decided quickly that I’d factory reset my router. A smarter decision would have been to call a nerd friend. Looking back now, I should have realised that resetting the router would wipe all of the settings that the nerd had carefully pre-programmed in for me. Surprisingly, this fantastic decision didn’t help the issue at all. In fact, you won’t believe it but it made things worse. Who would have thunk it? My first factory reset not having solved the problem, I decided to do it another couple of times. You might be a nerd if at the moment you are quoting in your head, “The definition of stupid is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” At this point I’d exhausted all of my possible ways of solving the problem. I’m dealing with essentially a foreign language. I don’t know what a WAP is. I wouldn’t know if an Ethernet bit me on the butt. I am unable to come up with a password longer than eight characters long with an upper case and a lower case letter, as well as a number or symbol. Well, I can probably do it once but the problem comes when they want me to repeat it. At this point I gave up. I don’t have the same persistence as a nerd. Remember, when they were young they spent their time being rejected by females who were busy saying yes to athletic boys. They had to wait for many years until young ladies realised that nerds have jobs and make money. It was before they realised nerds run the world. The next day I rang my internet company hoping they’d solve my problems (internet not in general). I did have to spend an hour waiting to speak to one of their nerds. He very patiently walked me through how to solve the problem. Within only a couple of minutes, I had wireless internet, a working VOIP and a reminder as to how much of a failure I am as an adult. So I say, long live the nerds. If you’d like to join my nerd appreciation society, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

A crisp long lens capture of a Black Duck by Graeme Mellor has taken out top honours in the Natural Resources South East Faces and Voices of our Landscape photo and video competition. This year the popular competition expanded to include social media and video categories. Natural Resources South East engagement officer Jamie McDonald led the judging panel through the tough task of choosing winners from more than 200 entries. Formerly a senior photographer and picture editor at Getty Images, Mr McDonald said that the quality of photography in this competition was outstanding. “Whether the image was captured with a smartphone, or high-end DSLR camera, the standard of this year was exceptional,” Mr McDonald said. “Choosing winners was difficult. Our community of photographers have delivered a stunning collection of images capturing the unique beauty of the South East.” This year’s prize pool included magazine subscriptions, photo processing and a National Parks SA annual Multi Parks Pass. Selected entries will feature in the upcoming 2018 Natural Resources South East calendar. Check out the Natural Resources South East website for a full list and gallery of winners.

LOCAL SPORT PIONEERS SURVIVE TOUGH TEST AT HOME Pioneers 92 (B. Hill 29; T. Daly 22; L. Jamieson, D. Alexander 14; J. Madgen 9) d Nunawading 81 Nunawading and the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers have played out some classic games over the past few years – as both have vied to be the best team in the nation. It is now building as a rivalry reminiscent of the BallaratMount Gambier rivalry in the late 1990s and early noughties. Once again the two faced off in a critical conference play off and it was the Pioneers, on their home court, that earned the first spot up for grabs in the 2017 East Conference final, and the right to again contest that title in front of their home fans. “We played a pretty good game,” coach Richard Hill said. “They (Nunawading) were very, very good, it was just one of those games we’ve had a lot of in the past six weeks, where we have played really, really well and beaten good opponents.” Resting Brad Hill on last week’s road double proved a masterstroke. The multi-Allan Scott Medallist was on fire in the first half, finishing with 29 points, and it was his two clutch threes to close out the first half that set up the small seven point buffer. “It didn’t feel like a seven point game,” Hill said. “It was really, really even and had been a dog fight until those threes.” The first quarter saw Spectre star Simon Conn prove more than a handful and by half time he had 18 points and had converted an incredible nine from 11. On the flip side of that was the work of Hill and Tom Daly. “Tom (Daly) came out really strong and had a great first quarter,” Hill said. At half time, it was the defensive structure of the Pioneers that was most discussed and, pleasingly, for the coach, the area the Pioneers immediately rectified. “We thought we were letting ourselves down defensively a little bit,” Hill said. “But we really took care of that and got it out to 15 at one stage.” But, as expected, the Spectres kept coming and with three minutes to play in the last, had worked their way back to a six point deficit. It was then another couple of clutch threes that restored the buffer - the first from Luke Jamieson and the other from the skipper, Daly. “We shot the ball really, really well,” Hill said. And he knows a 10 point ball game in the modern game is easily wiped out in a minute of good basketball. Daniel Alecander was not as prolfici offensively as in recent weeks but his prsence on the baords was still felt with 14 points and a game high 12 rebounds. Having played seven games in 21 days across Australia, the Pioneers could be forgiven for looking forward to the two week break ahead of the conference decider. “But it can be a double edged sword, when you are playing well, you want to keep playing,” Hill said. It does, however, give the squad time to hit the practice court in earnest for the first time in that three week period and start finetuning some aspects of their game. “We haven’t done the training we would have liked over the past few weeks, it’s been about recovery and staying fresh,” Hill said. “From that point of view the break is good but we will have two weeks without a game so we need to manage that.” The Pioneers emerged from the clash unscathed from an injury perspective with conference final details to be released as soon as possible. Keep an eye on the Pioneers website and facebook page for full details of the Icehouse hostd East Conference final.

SOUTH EAST SHOOTERS SHINE AT STATE TITLES The 2017 State Titles of the South Australian Field & Game Association were held over weekend of August 5 & 6 at Central Branch in the Adelaide Hills at Mount Pleasant. Twenty three competitors from the South East region travelled up to test their skills in the two day event shooting 75 targets per day of the Sporting Clays discipline. The already testing targets were made even tougher by atrocious weather conditions over the weekend with heavy rain, high winds and hail. Millicent’s Jeremy Kent revelled in the conditions to shoot 136/150 and again win the State Sporting Clay Champion by the stunning margin of 12 targets. Runner up and winning AA grade was Joe Densley, from Kingston, who managed to stay close to Kent until one, below average round, on the second day. Kongorong shooter Chris Wright was a late entry and finished AA grade runner up one target ahead of his neighbour and nemesis Ken Atkin. Liz Rymill finished second overall in C grade but also managed to win the Day 1 Handicap High Gun, claiming “the targets were challenging but fair” for a State shoot. Malcolm Whitehead shot well enough in the “worst conditions I’ve ever competed in” to win the State Super Veterans title with 115/150. Lake Bonney’s Tash Bellinger took out the Ladies title with 116/150, whilst Janette Densley, from Kingston, place third. Sub Juniors was a battle of Kongorong shooters, with Declan Wright claiming his first State title from Shak Von Stanke and Will Vickery, back in third, to complete the triumvirate. The South Australian Field & Game announced its team to represent the State at next month’s Sporting Clays Nationals in Western Australia after the weekend’s shoot and other qualifying shoots throughout the year. Jeremy Kent and Joe Densley made the Men’s open team and Janette Densley will represent the Ladies. FINAL INDOOR BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association held its last association championship for the 2017 season with the Elma Attiwill/Sportscene Ladies singles and the Pearson Family/Athol and Sue Malseed Men’s singles, which also incorporated the Ian Simpson Memorial Champion of Champions. In the Elma Attiwill/Sportscene Ladies singles, semi-final saw Glenburnie player Serena Bourn take victory from Glencoe player Heather Carthew 10 shots to 3. The other semi-final saw the Keisha Pearson from Post-Tel beat her mother Fiona Pearson from Post-Tel 6 shots to 4. This set up a final between Serena Bourn and Keisha Pearson, with Keisha leading 4 to 1 after the third end. The next three ends Serena scored to put her nose in front and beat Keisha and take victory and win the Elma Attiwill/Sportscene Ladies singles championship, 6 shots to 5. In the Pearson Family/Athol and Sue Malseed Men’s singles saw the first semi-final go to Post-Tel’s Stephen VonDuve over the Blue Lake Bowlers player Thomas Butler, 10 shots to 1. In the second semi-final RSL & District player Noel Miller beat the Commercial Club player Rod Fleming, 11 shots to 3. The men’s final between Stephen and Noel was a very close game with stephen out of the blocks early scoring the first two ends and then Noel bouncing back to lead by one shot lead on the sixth end, Steve held enough shots on the last end to take the game but Noel played an up shot to drag the jack and take victory 8 shots to 5 in the 2017 Men’s Singles championship. This saw Noel and Serena meet in the Ian Simpson Memorial Champion of Champions, with both of them going for their first ever Champion of Champions crown. Serena tried her hardest not being behind in the game for six ends only to lose the game on the last end, with Noel not giving up to win the silverware 6 shots to 5. In the ladies consolation semifinals Veronica Opie (Saints) defeated Janice Knight (Blue lake Bowlers Blue) 6 shots to 4 and Lynda Kember (Post-Tel) defeat Heather Glynn (Kongorong) 9 shots to 4. The ladies consolation final was won by Veronica Opie defeating Lynda Kember 5 shots to 4. In the men’s consolation semi-finals Wayne Legutko (Post-Tel) defeated Emilio Castginani (Moorak Red) 9 shots to 4 and Garry McIntyre (Glenburnie) defeated Michael Cameron (Commercial Club) 8 shots to 4. CATS TOPPLE TIGERS West Gambier 6.9 (45) d South Gambier 6.8 (44) It’s been a long season for coach Steve Wenman and his young West Gambier line-up but the hard work paid off at the weekend when they secured win number two for the year with a one point victory over South Gambier. Both sides fielded a bunch of teenagers in the clash but in the end, a point from 16 year old Lachlan Jones with around 90 seconds to play, sealed the deal for the Roos. In the tense final minute, Abdullah Kamara stuck a freak one handed grab to send the ball back down the line into the Roos forward fifty but the clock beat the Demons as they looked to move the ball forward and score. “The boys definitely deserve it,” Wenman, who kicked four of his side’s six goals, said. “It’s been a long year.” The most pleasing thing was the ability of his young side to play four quarters, especially given they were within a couple of kicks at three quarter time last time they took on the Demons at Blue Lake Sports Park and ended up losing by 12 goals. “Just the way we’ve come along is pleasing and the way we stayed in the game,” Wenman said.”We have been in a lot of games at three quarter time and dropped right off but we stuck at it this time.” Todd Lewis was herculean in the ruck, where he was double teamed most of the day, while the last kick hero Jones was also impressive – teenager or not. “Reid Kuller is also really stepping up to the challenge of senior footy and he was good, particularly in the second half when the game was up for grabs,” Wenman said. Kuller, another of the 16 year old brigade at the Roos put in a strong performance across the half forward line, while Lewis Lean took on the daunting task of keeping South spearhead Brayden Kain quiet and he limited the star forward to only one goal. Wenman is convinced the game time he has been able to get into the club’s young talent will bear fruit sooner rather than later as the Roos look to climb back up the ladder in season 2018. “It was good to see South also playing a lot of Under 17s in the seniors, you have to give these young blokes a go,” he said. Casterton Sandford 13.8 (86) d North Gambier 7.11 (53) The Cats continue to announce themselves as contenders, this time with a 10 goal to four second half to topple ladder leaders North Gambier.

Michael Cummings was again damaging on the ball, while the Cats also welcomed back Nick Upton from injury. East Gambier 16.14 (110) d Millicent 7.9 (51) The Bulldogs returned to the winners list with an emphatic victory over the Saints with co-coach Matt Scanlon leading the way for East with three goals in a best on ground performance, while the Saints were again best serviced by key big man Dylan Bromley, who was the only multiple goal scorer for Millicent with four.

South Gambier’s Imogen Walker shoots under pressure in her side’s shock four goal win over West Gambier.
