COVER - THE LAST PIECE OF THE PUZZLE FOR CONSTRUCTION GIANT It’s official. Thomson Bilt can now offer clients a complete one stop shop, from concept to completion, of any building project, no matter the size. “When the opportunity came up to purchase a well-known, locally owned construction company we had to jump at it and Bildit feels like the last piece to complete our puzzle,” Thomson Bilt owner Leon Thomson said. “We can now offer all existing and future clients from small dog kennel size sheds, to the biggest industrial shed you can dream off.” It means, as of August 14 when it all becomes official, Thomson Bilt will have 30 staff working out of their two Mount Gambier offices and their Warrnambool office to ensure all your building needs are catered for. “This is a very exciting time for all involved in the Thomson Bilt and Bildit,” Leon said. “You will see some new faces over the coming weeks as we strive for excellence in customer service - more hands-on deck equals more happy customers.” The official handover might be August 14 but there has been plenty of groundwork laid and the transition looks set to be smooth. “It will be business as usual for both Thomson Bilt and Bildit as a combined crew, offering quality products at affordable prices, with customer service being number one, to take the stress out of it for you, our clients,” Leon said. Bildit’s owner of the past 12 years, Russell Hay, is optimistic about the exciting new chapter for the business. “ I am confident that the incorporation of Bildit into another organisation with a broader footprint in the construction industry will

be a positive move for all parties,” Russell said. “Leon is a dynamic and experienced builder, the proprietor of Thomson Bilt, which incorporates Fair Dinkum Sheds and SOL Home Improvements, he owns and operates the local Jim’s Building Inspections franchise, manages Diamond Garage Doors, which operates in both Mount Gambier and Warrnambool, and also has a concreting service. However, until now, they have not had a steel engineering and fabricating facility to enable the local manufacture of larger custom-built building for clients.” Founded by Bill Urquart in the mid1980s, Bildit has become a trusted name
on the construction landscape and Russell was proud to have continued that tradition since 2005 and to now pass on that vision to Leon and the Thomson Bilt team. “I welcome this opportunity to thank all of our terrific clients and suppliers during the last 12 years,” Russell said. “I am especially grateful to our contractors, who have partnered with our team, to provide key external skills such as engineering, drafting, concreting, transportation and erection services. I wish every success to the new management and to our wonderful Bildit team in their future developments.”

REPRESENTING AUSTRALIA AGREES WITH SOFTBALLING SISTERS It loomed as an experience of a lifetime and that’s exactly what it was. Three years of dedication and commitment saw Mount Gambier
softballers Amber and Georgia Hood represent Australia at the 2017 Junior World Championships. The sisters headed to Clearwater, Florida, to take
on 25 other nations – the return of softball to the 2020 Olympics seeing a huge increase in nations heading to what amounts to an Under 19 World Championships. A self-confessed softball tragic herself, mother Tanya Hood, was abuzz at the wall to wall softball action. “The softball was amazing, you could sit there all day and watch it,” she said. And both girls agreed, given all their State successes and some friendlies in the green and gold, the world championships was another step up again in quality of play. “Big time – it was a massive step up and a lot bigger step up than what I was expecting,” Amber said. That being said no two softballers were probably better prepared. Amber earned the nod at starting catcher for the Aussie side and Georgia, who was the youngest squad member and included as much for the experience going forward, was also able to contribute, hitting the diamond in three games including pitching a no hitter. Georgia played against the Bahamas, Israel and Brazil and had her time in the batting box as well. “I felt prepared and knew I had done the work,” Georgia said. “I felt comfortable and like I could perform at my best. I was happy with how I pitched.” Interestingly, Australia boasted the fastest pitcher in the tournament in Tarni Stepto, with Georgia right in the ball park in terms of pace.
She already knows what she needs to work on to take her game to another level, with working on a drop her highest priority. “The feedback from the coaches was that I did what they asked and they were happy with my performance and we know that was about my development to continue to be part of this Under 19 national team,” Georgia said. “It did feel special to be there representing your country and knowing how many people would want to be there doing that. But was such a great experience and I will know what to expect next time and I will be the experience one helping the other girls.” Georgia is still eligible for another world championship as part of the youth side and she will be looking to represent South Australia at Under 19 level this coming softball season. She will team up with sister Amber in a new A Grade line-up in the South Australian
Softball League – the Hills – with mother Tanya co-coaching the newly established team. Amber was behind the catcher’s mask for six games during the championships, and was unfortunately forced from the field in the elimination final with China with an elbow injury that flared during the Florida trip. In fact, Amber didn’t have the ideal preparation, contracting a chest infection during the two week training camp leading into the worlds which limited her training but she still earned that starting role. She combined with Stepto for a tournament high 31 strikeouts – more than the top USA combination. Amber now graduates from junior ranks and will be vying for a spot in the South Australian Open team this coming season, with both sisters still with the Olympics in their sights. “I am hoping if I keep playing well and keep improving I could be a chance,” Amber said. “That’s my life now. Leading into this all I did with my free time was for softball, whether it was going to the gym or skills training. I didn’t realise how much harder it would be once I moved to Adelaide and was without mum. It’s hard to get someone to come out with you and throw the balls and the like, so much harder.” Playing in extremely humid conditions certainly tested the sisters but being part of a team that committed only five errors for the entire tournament showed Australia is certainly building a world class line-up. The team officially finished seventh after what was somewhat of a shock loss to China but can hang their hat on losing only 1-0 to eventual silver medallists Japan. “The grounds were amazing,” Amber said. “And there were all these top class facilities everywhere.” Softball in the US was also an eye opener for the softball mad family. “Softball is everywhere over there, it’s like AFL here,” Tanya said. SA’s Inside South Australia website to vote for your favourite story. Six Limestone Coast stories are part of that shortlist with the awards scheme undergoing another transformation in 2017. These awards are the current version of the former SA Great awards that then morphed into Advantage SA and now Brand SA. They have also now moved from each region having their own award winners to the 2017 scheme that will see one Statewide presentation at Whyalla on October 6. To have your say, you need to vote online prior to August 31. The Limestone Coast stories in the running for the downsized awards scheme are Robe’s Emma Bates, the ambulance volunteer who has spent 20 years in the beauty industry; Lucindale’s Hayley Smart (pictured above left), the fashion designer whose label The Eighth Letter is starting to make its mark; Robe’s Hinchcliffe family and their burgeoning Robe Dairy (pictured above right) and its famous Greek yoghurt; Lucindale artist Hamish Macdonald (pictured below) and his passion for promoting art in the region; the Robe Tourism Association and the quarter of friends sharing their passion for the coastal community with the world; and Keith’s hosting of the 2017 Australian Jet Sprint Championship, where a community fundraiser, Diesel & Dirt, has placed the Upper South East town on the national calendar. AT A GLANCE RARE INSIGHT INTO RENAISSANCE GREAT Country Arts SA is proud to present our first and only Exhibition on Screen film for 2017 – Michelangelo: Love and Death, as part of SALA 2017, and it will be showing at Mount Gambier’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on August 24 at 7pm.. The spectacular painted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the carved statue of David may be familiar to us even here in Australia, but how much do we really know about their creator? Michelangelo was responsible for many of the most famous Renaissance works of art that still draw crowds from around the world today, hundreds of years after his death. Michelangelo: Love and Death is a cinematic exploration of this charismatic figure. It looks at the famous figure’s relationship with his contemporaries and his valuable artistic legacy that has made him one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance – and perhaps of all time. Patrons are encouraged to get to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre half an hour before the screening for a CONNECT talk with local artist Luke Pellen.
ENDANGERED PLANTS ON SHOW More than 42 rare and endangered plant species are growing in the City of Mount Gambier Valley Lake Conservation Park display garden which is now officially open to the public. Above - City of Mount Gambier Conservation Park contractor Orazio Cultreri and volunteers Graeme Paschke and Wayne Moritz at the Valley Lake Conservation Park display garden.

Visitors to the gallery are also invited to vote in the People’s Choice Award. An exhibition of selected works will be held at the Gallery from October 9 to November 24. INVENTIONS IN THE SPOTLIGHT Inventors, tinkerers and wannabe scientists will have a chance to showcase their expertise and creations at south-west Victoria’s first `Maker Fest’ in October. South West TAFE will host the fest on October 20-21, giving students and the general public a place to demonstrate their cutting-edge use of new technology. Event coordinator and TAFE Teaching Quality Centre Manager Robin Smith said the event was not just for schools. “We’re inviting people who are making innovative things in their sheds at home to showcase their abilities and their products,” he said. The program will also include workshops by inventors and makers in fields such as 3D printing and medical technology.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE 31.. By ROBBIE TANSEL I got a lovely email from a concerned reader this week and I’ve got nothing better to talk about so this will have to do. “Dear Robbie, I am concerned about the state of today’s junk mail, and the influence that it is placing on society. Please let me explain. I opened the bundle up the other week to sift through the Lifestyle magazine and find your hilarious (some adjectives may have been added to this email by Robbie Tansel to make it more accurate) column about nothing, and found the words ‘Get your balls in the cup!’ plastered across the front page of a cheap shop advertising booklet. Reading further, they were selling a beer pong table… (When will this be an Olympic sport so the Aussies can rip a gold medal off the Chinese?) The last time I heard that phrase, G.Y.B.I.T.C., was in the early eighties when Dad was putting on his jock strap and his wedding suit to go and see Prince Charles at the Mount Gambier Airport. Mum put it in the bin shortly after that time, and we never ever spoke of it again.
Reading further in this low brow catalogue, I found two young people under a lovely blanket, with the phrase, ‘Perfect for NETFLIX and chill…’ I have got no idea of what that means, but the scared look on the young gentleman’s face, and the promiscuous grin the lady was giving, told me they weren’t going to watch re-runs of Mr. Ed while sharing a bucket of popcorn. (I just Googled that one and it’s the equivalent of back in the 00s when I’d ask a young lady to come in to my house for a coffee after going out… and they’d say no thanks. It’s also the equivalent to the 90s when I would ask a chick for a root.) What’s next Robbie? What’s going on with the catalogue industry? The face of the stereotypical catalogue model has gone out the window. It wasn’t that long ago when all of the young ladies were size 4 and all of the men had chiselled jaws, just the right amount of stubble to look rugged but cultured and abs you could wash your clothes on. Now they come in all shapes, sizes, textures and attitudes. I know you are partial to the mid year Bras and Things sale catalogue, but these days I am too afraid to open it up and have a look in case you, Robbie Tansel, are in there wearing some style of sports lycra with a motif lifestyle1.net | 21
of a pirate screen printed all over the front. Urrrrggghh. I just did a little bit of vomit in my mouth. Please help. Poiter from Pt. Mac” First things first, Poiter, my article is about seven hundred words each week so it would help me out a lot if you made your emails to me about that long. Then I won’t have to try and come up with something interesting to follow with. I’ve got to say I do agree with you though, Poiter. I feel a little bit embarrassed when I open the catalogues, like where am I meant to look? I’m worried that Donna will walk in while I’m looking at the Target catalogue and slap me firmly on the cheek. Lingerie model has to be one of the most bizarre jobs that a person can have. Can you imagine explaining that as you’re going through customs into China. “For a job I stand in my underwear, contorting my body at weird angles and people take photos of me.” In China that’s what they do when you mention the Dalai Lama. As for putting fat people in the catalogues, that just make me feel more self conscious and uncomfortable about selecting clothes. I look at it and think, “So that’s what it looks like when I squeeze my chubby backside into a pair of jeans.” Or, “Now I see what they mean about wearing horizontal stripes.” Am I up to seven hundred words yet? Since we’re talking concerns, here’s a question for you Poiter. Do you think it’s just a coincidence that the increase in the number of gyms seems to directly correlate with the decrease in the number of Jims? I think we are at a point in history where there is approximately one gym per Jim. I see a time not too far in the future when the ratio of gyms to Jims could even reach 2:1. Well if you’d like to write my article for me…I mean send me an email, send it to email@example.com And what are you talking about sports lycra with a pirate on the front? I’d look hot in a shirt like that.

Local timber processing company NF McDonnell and Sons have shown their Christmas and community spirit by signing a three year sponsorship deal with the City of Mount Gambier as the naming rights sponsor for the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade. The sponsorship deal has an option to extend and will help support the annual event and provide prize money to reward the best community entries. “The Christmas Parade is a great community event and I believe it really establishes the spirit of the Christmas season in the community,” NF McDonnell and Sons managing director Ian McDonnell said. “Growing up we always looked forward to the parade, as did our children and I look forward to taking our grandchildren in the future, so we are thrilled to be involved.” The thriving timber business was established at its Suttontown site in 1956 and is now operated by third and fourth generation family members. It currently employs 110 people. “My late uncle Don McDonnell was heavily involved in the community as Mayor for 19 years and my father Les has been involved in a number of service and community organisations,” Ian said.”As a family we would like to continue the tradition of being part of the community so this is a really good fit.” City of Mount Gambier deputy mayor and Mount Gambier Christmas Parade Advisory Group Council representative Hanna Persello welcomed the support shown by the McDonnell family. “On behalf of the advisory group, I’d like to thank NF McDonnell for their generous contribution to the parade. It will go a long way towards ensuring the long running community event continues to thrive,” Cr Persello said. implemented and are continuing a focus on waste reduction and recycling. The Limestone Coast Local Government Association together with the region’s seven councils launched the School Waste Reduction and Recycling Challenge earlier this year. The two month challenge was open to all primary and secondary schools and next year early learning institutions will also be included. It was all about students coming up with ways to promote waste reduction in their school, as well as recycling strategies. LCLGA regional waste management coordinator June Saruwaka said schools play an important role in the community with these types of issues. “They help communities reduce and recycle waste, while saving money and teaching kids valuable lessons,” she said. “In addition to this, schools have the potential to reduce the amount of resources they consume and dispose of. Schools also give young people knowledge skills and positive attitudes towards the environment.” There were a number of criteria against which each competing school was ranked – the least general waste, the most recyclables and a combination of those categories, on a per capita basis. The competing schools were Bordertown High School (Tatiara); Grant High School and the Independent Learning Centre (Mount Gambier) and Newbery Park Primary School, St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School and
Penola Primary School (Wattle Range). The Independent Learning Centre and Grant High School designed and donated the trophies, which were made from recycled material. STAMPS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
August is Stamp Collecting Month and this year’s theme is Dragonflies: Nature’s Flying Machines. Stamp collecting has been around for generations and provides a great pastime and educational opportunity for young and old, with this year’s theme profiling one of the most beautiful creatures of the insect world – dragonflies. With around 6,000 known species of dragonfly worldwide, 325 of which occur in Australia, Australia Post Philatelic Manager Michael Zsolt said it was the perfect subject for this year’s Stamp Collecting Month stamp issue. “This year’s Stamp Collecting Month is a great opportunity for students, teachers, parents and grandparents to share in the fascination and splendour of nature’s flying machines,” he said. lifestyle1.net | 24
THE STORIES BEHIND 2.5 MILLION KMS OF ENGINE PROTECTION
CASTROL RX SUPER... PROTECTING A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR GENERATIONS J.O. BERKEFELD Mt Gambier, South Australia
Berkefeld’s family business has serviced the Limestone Coast in South Australia for over 80 years. Four generations on, the Berkefelds supply Castrol lubricants to a diverse range of industries and businesses. To become solely a Castrol reseller was an easy decision for the family to make. The high price of equipment and machinery meant their customers wanted the best quality product available to protect their investment.
“ We’ve been selling Castrol RX Super for 35 years. When my customers service their truck or tractor, they can tell the difference when they use Castrol RX Super. Simply, quality is a lot easier to sell. My customers depend on their machinery to support their staff and their families. Castrol RX Super protects their business.” Kym Berkefeld – 3rd generation
For over 35 years Castrol RX Super has been protecting the livelihoods of Australians. Visit castrol.com/RXSuperproof for more Castrol RX Super stories. WHAT’S YOURS? *Engine case study showing evidence of long term performance of Castrol RX Super 15W-40. New engine monitored in single trailer application (max GCM 42T) with 20,000 km service intervals. Following independent engine inspection, no high temperature metal on metal contact was evident. No oil sludge, film or deposit was noted. The engine was finally retired due to fracture of gudgeon pin.
IN THE GARDEN With spring just around the corner and buds starting to burst it’s time to finish all those end of winter gardening jobs. All pruning of roses, deciduous trees and fruit trees should be well underway, if not finished, and it is important to make sure you have applied a winter spray of lime sulphur straight after pruning to clean up any overwintering pests and diseases on roses that are not in leaf, fruit trees and ornamental trees. Also on the important list is copper sprays (Liquid Copper in now available too) for stone fruit trees, such as peaches and nectarines, to avoid the attack of peach leaf curl, sometimes called curly leaf. If you had it last season you will definitely need to spray for it now as it does not go away if left untreated. This is going to be more prevalent this year with the continuous rain in recent days when you only have that critical window in to spray at “bud swell” and finding dry days to get sprays on is hard. All you can do is try your best. Recent releases of the new curly leaf free peaches and nectarines have been a boon for home gardeners and now is the time to invest in an easy care tree if you are struggling to control the leaf curl. The time for planting dormant deciduous bare rooted trees and fruit trees is also drawing to a close. Stone fruit and almonds are bursting into life so this week should be the last
By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant opportunity to plant these from bare rooted trees. Potted trees are available all year round from places such as Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, so there is not the panic that there used to be in days gone by and often older, more mature trees are available too, so you aren’t missing out on fruiting time. Now is also the time to be applying the first of the seasons fertilisers and with all this lovely rain should be easily washed in. This should be applied around the drip line of mature trees and fruit trees and around 30cm out from the base of roses. At Limestone Coast Roses they have been having fantastic results with a new rose fertiliser that came on to the market a few years ago. It is now available to the home gardener as it was used mainly by us professional growers in the past. It has higher amounts of potash, so important for disease prevention and colour and quantity of blooms plus being coated with iron which is an added bonus in our predominantly alkaline soils, should make your roses the glossiest they have ever been. The staff at Limestone Coast Roses are always eager to help with any enquiries you may have with regard to pruning roses and feeding as all staff are fully versed on roses. The deciduous magnolias are looking great at the moment around the region and bursting forth with their goblet shaped blooms on the bare branches. Look
out for specials such as 25% off all of these at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees including one of my favourites, the sought after Black Tulip and Yulan varieties and the new fairy magnolia also. The three new varieties released recently - Genie, Cleopatra and Cameo have also been very popular with Genie being a dwarf version of Black Tulip, so ideal for smaller gardens or pots. Come in for a look at their stunning display and grab a bargain at the same time. Most of the bare rooted deciduous ornamental trees are selling out and as they burst back in to life we they will have to be withdrawn them from sale for potting on. The national shortage of ornamental pear tree varieties continues but I am aware that Limestone Coast Advanced trees in Mount Gambier have good stocks still, with many on end of season specials along with mop top trees reduced with heavy reductions on Mop Robinias at two for $139.90 or $79.95 each - stocks are limited and at these prices they will sell fast. Weeping flowering cherries, silver birch, oak trees, lipstick maples, poplars….the list goes on are also heavily reduced (see advert adjacent page) so don’t leave planting too long, make the most of the great rain to settle everything in. The Pot Shop at Gardenarium in Mount Gambier caters for Unusual gardening orientated gifts, wall art, gardening tools, oil drum animals from

The Tour of the Great South Coast has been positioned as one of regional Australia’s best road races after another successful five day series, with plans to further build its national profile for 2018. Glenelg Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the unique cross border event, which included three stages across Mount Gambier and Port MacDonnell, had received national media attention. “This sporting marvel is quickly growing as one of the most exciting races on the Australian road series and is assisting to give our shire national media exposure,” Cr Rank said. “The cyclists have rated this six stage series as one of the most challenging, testing not only their endurance but their mental toughness as they have to tackle the steepest of hills and gruelling sprint challenges. Every night national media channels were crossing to this event, showcasing beautiful imagery of our region and highlighting the quality of the event. Furthermore, the 135 entrants and their support crews all stayed in our region, eating in our restaurants and spending their leisure time exploring our great shire providing significant economic benefits.” Plans are now being formulated for the 2018 event which Cr Rank said would continue to grow. “We are focused on making this event one of national significance. The feedback from the cyclists and race organisers is that this course is world class and it is clear we are on the right track to achieve this goal,” Cr Rank said. “Our efforts over the next 12 months, with support from our cross border neighbours, will be focused on helping to further build this events profile in an effort to attract more support, whether it be from government or the business sector, for the 2018 event. We are also working on adding a community cycle next year, led by a school program, with the local cycling club to host a larger amateur showcase to provide greater public support and participation into the future.”

SPORT AT A GLANCE PILOT PROGRAM FOR ELITE ATHLETES & COACHES Together with the support of the Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS), State and Local Sporting Associations, the Limestone Coast Local Government Association (LCLGA), is pleased to announce a pilot Elite Sporting Academy based in the Limestone Coast. The Elite Sporting Academy Pilot Program will offer up to 12 places to local athletes, aged between 13–18 years of age, who are identified as having the potential to benefit from a free 12-month elite strength and conditioning and education program. The objective of the program is to assist in closing the gap between what is offered and available to metropolitan based athletes compared with regional athletes. Inducted athletes will have access to an elite strength and conditioning program and education, delivered by accredited coaches and educators, around what it takes to make it in top level sport. Education will include Diet and Nutrition, Resilience, Sports Psychology and Planning and Preparing to be an elite athlete. The Pilot Elite Regional Sporting Academy is also looking for coaches. This is a fantastic opportunity for athletes to be part of something that will provide them with elite training whilst being able to stay in their home towns, training in local gyms. For coaches it is a chance to help an Athlete to take the big step to elite sport as well as having access to the next level of coaching techniques. This pilot program is looking for athletes from any sport. Clubs, schools and associations can nominate someone who they think would benefit from the program. The Limestone Coast Local Government Association is committed to developing a long-term regional sporting Academy in the Limestone Coast at the completion of this Pilot program. Contact STARCLUB field officer Tony Elleston for more details at starclubse@lclga. sa.gov.au

BASKETBALL DREAM ON TRACK Bella Stratford continues to make her mark on the national sporting landscape – this time it’s with basketball. The multi-talented State representative in both basketball and cricket has just been selected as one of 18 girls to attend the selection camp for the Australian Crocs and Sapphires ahead of the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Asia Cup. The selection camps will be held from September 4-6 at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Canberra with 12 athletes then chosen to represent their country at the FIBA U16 Asia Cup. In a twist of fate, should Bella be successful, her coach for that championship would be former Millicent basketballer Shannon Seebohm, who is considered in the top echelon of Australian coaches since joining their ranks, when his playing career was cut short by a medical condition. The male and females squads were chosen after observing athletes at the Australian Under 18 and Under 16 Junior Championships as well as performances in their respective state and territory high performance programs. Bella represented SA Country at the Under 18 nationals in Townsville this year as a bottom aged player. The team finished sixth but Bella dominated the individual stats. She was in the championships top eight scorers, as well as sitting in that company for average points and shooting percentage. She was the leading scorer for SA Country and the second highest scorer for South Australia, across its Metro and Country line-ups. The Sapphires team, including athletes from Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales, will take part in a series of on-court sessions and scrimmages at the selection camp. “I am very happy with the squad we have selected for the camp in September,” said women’s team mentor Shannon Seebohm. “There is a high level of talent and athleticism and it is an exciting group. The players we have chosen will give us the ability to implement a similar style of play to the one we had success with in 2016 [when the Sapphires won the World Championship gold medal].” With Bella now well and truly on the radar of national talent scouts and selectors, the decision to pursue her education at Adelaide’s Immanuel College has been vindicated, allowing her to better

pursue her sporting aspirations, as well. “I moved to give myself the best opportunity because I want to take it (basketball) further,” Bella said. “My goal is to go to college in America and being in an Australian squad boosts that chance heaps. Even to be selected in this top 18 is pretty awesome and even if I don’t end up making the final team, it is a great opportunity and great to be recognised.” The 15 year old, who turns 16 next month, is excited to be heading to the AIS for this final selection hit out, and she already believes the move to Adelaide has been beneficial. “I can already see how many more opportunities I can get up here,” Bella said. “And the facilities up here at school are crazy. I have a pool, gym and everything right at school – it’s awesome.” The transition has also been made easier given Bella is boarding with family, and only loves walking distance from Immanuel College.
Hobart 88 d Pioneers 80 (D. Alexander 23; B. Hill 21; J. Madgen 12; T. Daly 11; L. Jamieson 10) Pioneers 92 (D. Alexander 24; L. Jamieson 21; E. Burdon 19; T. Daly 10) The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers have finished the season with a split road double and coach Richard Hill is feeling confident heading into yet another play-off series. “I was really happy with our performances,” Hill said. And that was despite having to settle for an eight point loss to Hobart – the second ranked side in the South Conference. “To come back from a long way down and then a couple of things didn’t go our way but to do that in a tough environment was pleasing,” Hill said. The Friday night clash on the Chargers’ home court, where they have lost only one game this season, always loomed as a challenge. “They (Hobart) are a very good team,” Hill said. “We didn’t play poorly but of course there are areas we could have been better.” It was surprisingly the start that was costly for the visitors, trailing by 11 at the first change and playing catch up in front of a parochial home crowd. Daniel Alexander (pictured below) top scored for the Pioneers with 23, while Brad Hill (21) and Luke Jamieson, 10 points and 11 rebounds, continue to impress. In a good sign for the East Conference top ranked contender, the Pioneers finished four wins clear of its nearest rival, and they backed up the disappointing loss with a comprehensive 19 point win over Kilsyth on Saturday night. The Pioneers rested Hill, who has been battling an ankle complaint, and coach Hill was happy to be able to get more time into his bench in the lead up to post-season action. “We backed up really well,” Hill said. Alexander, 24 points and 11 rebounds, was again a stand out with Jamieson (21) and Erik Burdon (19) leading the way, with Burdon hot from three point territory, hitting five from seven, as the Pioneers drained threes like they were mid range jumpers, shooting at an unheard of 52 percent from beyond the arc.

ROOS FALL JUST SHORT North Gambier 53 d West Gambier 46 West Gambier always seems to challenge the Tigers but just can’t get the points and at the weekend, the match followed that 2017 script. Despite the best efforts of coach Lisa McGregor, who is running back into some really good form heading into the 2017 finals series, and young gun Olivia McEvoy, the Tigers were able to prevail. Mel Renko continues to dominate, making life tough for opposition mid courters and also providing a lot of drive in offence, while Caroline Davey is a scoring machine and so often the difference between victory and defeat for the second ranked North line-up. Millicent 82 d South Gambier 28 Millicent was at its clinical best at the weekend and with three rounds to go until their premiership defence gets really serious, the Saints only concerns are a knee injury for defender Kimmi Varcoe and a calf strain for star mid courter Audine Bryant. East Gambier 56 d Casterton Sandford 27 East defender Brenna McKay continues to loom large ahead of the 2017 finals series, again playing a huge role for the Bulldogs as they secured a strong win over the Cats.

CATS LOOMING AS GENUINE CONTENDER
(M. Mutch, E. Chandler)
15 & UNDER A
Casterton Sandford 11.12 (78) d East Gambier 6.7 (43) The rest of the Western Border football competition might want to take notice of this scoreline – not because East Gambier was below par but because Casterton Sandford is emerging and looms as a dark horse for the 2017 premiership race. The Cats big bodied midfield was dominant with Daylesford recruit Michael Cummings (pictured above) looming as a real X factor in the upcoming finals series. Cummings breaks open packs and gets the ball cleanly to the Cats key runners and most sides seem to struggle to find a match up for the classy onballer. Add to that former coach Dylan Ayton, who was also good form in the weekend victory, and the Cats are building nicely, even with key personnel, including Brandon Currie and Nick Upton still sidelined. East Gambier looked the better side in the opening 15 minutes of the clash and the Bulldogs scored the first major of the contest. East was running the ball well but the turnovers were racking up and the saving grace was the fact the only scoring opportunities the Cats could generate were under pressure and Casterton Sandford’s first four scores were behinds. But when the Cats generated some quality shots on goal the majors came and they kicked six unanswered to set up a convincing margin given the conditions. quarter involving an East match official saw a shot on goal for the Bulldogs turn into a six pointer for the Cats and the match was all but over. The absence of Jayden Eldridge was notable for East, as was the late withdrawal of Nathan Forrest but the result was clearly more about the quality of the Cats than the efforts of the Bulldogs. Trent Nesbitt slotted three goals for the Cats in tough conditions, while for East, Jack Dawe relished a run on the wing, also booting two majors. The news wasn’t all good for the Cats when gun recruit Travis Robertson, who was in only his second game, appeared to injure his hamstring. North Gambier 19.12 (126) d West Gambier 6.5 (41) Young gun Declan Carmody continues to impress, making the most of the weekend’s conditions to slot seven goals in a best on ground performances in the top ranked Tigers comprehensive win over West Gambier. Millicent 8.11 (59) d South Gambier 3.4 (22) This is the result, along with the Cats’ somewhat surprise victory over East, that has relelgated the Demons to a September without finals. South was in the contest with Millicent only kicking away in the final quarter but it does appear, barring a miracle, that the top four is set with three rounds to play.

The Mount Gambier racing Club is looking forward to a redevelopment of its Glenburnie track courtesy of a cash injection from both the Federal Government and Thoroughbred Racing SA (TRSA). The industry’s peak State body is handing over $1.8million for the upgrade of the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse, to ensure it is an all weather facility and alleviate the need for cancellation of events, while the Federal Government tipped in $1.5million as part of its Building Better Regions Fund. Both announcements came last week with Federal Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash on site to announce the windfall saying the project would deliver new sports facilities crucial to the economic future of the region. “Providing a track that can host race meetings in all but the worst possible weather conditions will be a major boon for the local industry and the economies of Mt Gambier and its surrounding region,” Minister Nash said. “I congratulate the Mount Gambier community on their successful application under the Infrastructure Projects Stream. I aim to help build the kinds of regional communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and providing community sporting facilities does just that.” The funds will go towards a new racing surface, featuring improved drainage and irrigation. Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin was also on hand for the announcement. “In addition to ensuring the sustainability of racing in the region, this project will deliver economic benefits through delivering consistent track conditions which will, in turn, improve safety levels for jockeys and their horses,” Mr Pasin said. “The project will also promote increased local participation in community activities including

abilities it will give us to avoid the weather problems we’ve had in the past and allow us to extend our season,” he said. “It’s great news for the club and the community and we’re extremely grateful to the Federal Government and TRSA for their support.” The major overhaul, which has already been designed by FMG Engineering’s Jeremy Clapp, will be the fourth such upgrade for a South Australian track in the past decade, following on from major works at Morphettville, Gawler and Murray Bridge. TRSA chief operating officer Nick Redin was understandably excited that another South Australian track could be redeveloped in a move that can only strengthen the industry. “As soon as the tender process has been finalised, we anticipate the project will take approximately 12 months to complete, the industry will now work with the club and local participants on the timing of when this project will be done.” Mr Redin said. Fiona Nash, and Member for Barker Tony Pasin.
