CHEERING THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS When we think cheerleading, we think of American high school and college movies, but it is a sport not only gaining momentum in Australia but having been earmarked as a provisional Olympic event. And Mount Gambier is now part of the revolution. The Purple Thunder cheerleading squads only started training in February but have finished with a first and a second placing at their first competition – the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF) Winterfest. Training at the Blue Lake Gymnastics Club facility at Malseed Park, head coach Josie Flanagan, is so grateful for the quality facility. “We’ve got the sprung floor and it is a fantastic facility with room for growth,” she said. In February, Josie arranged for two top quality coaches from Sydney to work with her fledgling squads and it has been onwards and upwards from there.

And you do not need any dance or gymnastics, which is Josie’s background, to be part of the cheerleading. “Eight of the people who competed at Winterfest started cheerleading in February with no dance or gymnastics background,” Josie said. “That’s the beauty of it, you don’t have to be a certain size or shape.” Some of the Purple Thunder squad that competed at Winterfest also had never been on stage for any reason before so the first and second placings were a real triumph. “Every single person is important to the team,” Josie said. “Everyone has their strengths and is better at something than someone else.” Good for personal fitness and to be part of a team environment, Josie said Australian cheerleading is a highly regulated sport with a strong focus on safety, and that the 55,000 competitors nationally are part of a supportive community. The South Australian Winterfest attracted 1500 competitors and the national event later this year is expected to see more than 12,000 cheerleaders take the stage. “Cheerleading is a very good physical activity and you really build friendships and build your own self confidence,” Josie said. The success of the Winterfest campaign for Purple Thunder has seen Josie set the target of taking a team to the 2019 World Titles. And it is not a pipe dream by any stretch. “In the seniors competition where we came second, the team that came third won last year and went to the world titles,” Josie said. “One of them was a world champion cheerleader and it worked out well for everyone as they took sessions right throughout regional South Australia.” For Josie, who has 10 years experience training squads in Adelaide before returning home to Mount Gambier, it is all about developing the sport in this region and the Winterfest success was a great stepping stone. Purple Thunder has two squads with a third junior squad set to start competing later in the year. “And we are always welcoming new people,” Josie said. “Cheerleading goes all year round so you can join any time.” Purple Thunder is looking for male and female participants, five years and older with Tuesday nights seeing stunting practice, Thursday nights is tumbling training and a new Monday night class will start next school term from 5.15pm for participants under 12 years of age

Both teams with attend the SA States on September 30, the Aussie Gold Spectacular in October and the AASCF Nationals, in November, in Melbourne. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DON’T DREAM IT’S OVER... By ROBBIE TANSEL I’m really not sure if this is entertaining at all. Many of you probably think I should start with that disclaimer every week. Realistically, it should

probably be the name of my column. I’m feeling confident in saying this will be one of my weirdest articles ever, and that’s probably saying something. I

would also like to say from the start that this article is not me softening a confession. You may understand soon. This is completely one hundred percent true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent. What I’m going to write about this week is a dream I had last week. Many of you will have read me say in the past how much I hate people telling me about their dreams so you may think it’s quite hypocritical me doing the same thing. In my defence, I don’t think I dream very often. In fact I think I only have one or two dreams a year. Either that or I just don’t remember them. Anyway, here’s my dream. I was on a holiday in a caravan with Donna and Shaquille. This is probably not that surprising as we’ve been talking quite a bit recently about the possibility of getting one. It turns out that Donna had cheated on me prior to the holiday and was now seeing the new guy. I have no idea why we had still gone on a holiday together. Maybe the caravan park wouldn’t refund our deposit if we cancelled and I didn’t want to waste money. That’s the kind of thing I’d do. Well the next thing you know, an attractive young lady started showing interest in me. Well she was only human I guess. It’s important that real Donna (as opposed to Donna in my dreams who was obviously a total

cow) knows that the young lady was not a person I know in the real world. She was completely made up by my unconscious. Considering Donna was a cow, and the young lady was attractive, I decided to go for a date with her and there was also some sort of mysterious crimes that me, her and two other people were expected to investigate. At this point I’m thinking that Shaq might be watching too much Scooby Doo. The young lady came around to pick me up which was weird, not because women shouldn’t drive men but because I’m a control freak and don’t like being driven around by other people, be they man, woman or child. I decided to let the other members of the team know I thought they could handle investigating the mystery without us so me and the young lady could spend some time alone. They took the bait and headed off. The next thing you know, me and the young lady are pashing. I had my hands on her bottom, on the outside of her clothing I might add. It was only our first date. Even in my dreams I’m a gentleman and like to take things slowly. For some reason she was wearing a tennis outfit. I’m not sure if it was her disguise for our investigation or maybe she was actually a tennis player. I’m not sure if it was a coincidence that Wimbledon has been on the last couple of weeks. I know that I did not watch any of it, but while I was working on my computer this night, I had the news on in the background and I heard a minute or two of highlights from the tennis.

It’s been so long since I’ve watched the news (Shaq’s fault) that maybe it really stuck in my brain. Is this starting to sound like the worst Mills and Boon novel you’ve ever read? In my dream, I distinctly remember thinking that it felt totally weird kissing someone other than Donna. In my dream I decided I was going back to Donna and I was going to win her back. This was the point when I woke up. Like I said, this isn’t particularly funny, but I feel it’s important that I assert that I have the moral high ground now. My behaviour was much better than Donna’s. Don’t feel sorry for her. She’s gotten cross at me for things I’ve done in her dreams on plenty of occasions, including in the week since this dream. So it’s only fair that she be held to account for her behaviour in my dream. And if that’s what cold and flu medication does to my brain, I’m never going near ice. And in between those outdoor adventures, Justine found a new passion, and the first time author has produced a short childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Little People Can Change The World. The project is a labour of love â&#x20AC;&#x201C; first and foremost because she believes it is an important book for children, but also to raise money for a school project in Cambodia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was inspired to help make a positive change to the children of today,â&#x20AC;? Justine said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe it is so important for children to feel emotionally supported in all aspects of life to be able to grow.â&#x20AC;? Fifty cents per sale of the book will be going to help the children in Siem Reap, Cambodia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have a family friend who lives over there and is married to a local,â&#x20AC;? Justine said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Their knowledge of who is in desperate need of support is invaluable.â&#x20AC;? The funds from Justineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s self published Amazon Kindle book will go towards providing uniforms, stationery and other supplies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If the children donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a school uniform they are not allowed to attend school so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so important,â&#x20AC;? Justine said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is an extremely poor area with seasonal work only available in the fields paying an average of $3 per day. We decided to help out the school children as it is something I feel very passionate about. The condition of the schools is very poor and requires a lot of work.â&#x20AC;?

Justineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book is full of short, rhyming stories tackling issues like the first day of school, bullying, social inclusion, illness, death and just being yourself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I created the short rhyming stories as it helps with childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s memory and makes it easy to read,â&#x20AC;? Justine said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If every child could read this book and gain a better understanding of how to respect and treat each other, the world

She is also committed to continue her association with the Cambodian school project as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t through an organisation, it is something we are doing personally and 100% of the proceeds go directly to buy school uniforms, stationery and, hopefully, some repairs to the building.â&#x20AC;? EARLY LEARNING CENTRE CELEBRATING 40 YEARS

Staff and parents of the Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre in Millicent are busily planning a celebration for its 40th anniversary. The celebration will be held on Sunday, July 30, from 11 am to 2pm, and will include activities for the entire family. The centre was opened on July 12, 1977, by the then Deputy Premier of South Australia, Des Corcoran. It was named after the incumbent Mayor Gladys Smith, who had made a tremendous contribution to the community. Mrs Smith was a passionate advocate for the establishment of the child care facility as she believed that every woman should be given the opportunity to pursue employment. She lobbied the government tirelessly, and was successful in gaining funding to build the centre. In the ensuing years, many children have experienced quality education and care from dedicated, passionate educators. In its opening months in 1977, there were more than 150 enrolments, and to this day the facility still provides regular care for up to 145 children from 105 local families. “The quality of care provided to the children over the years has always been exceptionally high,” centre director Clara Walker said. “We are very proud to be maintaining this standard despite changing conditions and standards in the field of Early Childhood Education and Care. The centre recently received a rating of ‘Exceeding’ in the National Quality Standards. It is a highly valued service in our community. We are well supported and assist many young families from Millicent and surrounds. The centre’s parent committee is hard at work planning a fitting celebration to acknowledge our 40 year anniversary. It will be a day of fun including face painting, balloon animals, a petting zoo, fairy floss, sausage sizzle, games and a lucky door prize.” All past and current children, families and staff are welcome to come along and enjoy the day and celebrate an important service within our community. Val has recently witnessed escalating costs for running the motel’s swimming pool and spa and rather than be forced to close down the indoor pool in the winter she has decided to invest in the latest technology of swimming pool heat pumps and low energy pool

circulating pumps. Modelling has shown that Val’s project return on investment is between two and three years based on current energy prices. Two heat pumps, 7.9kW for the spa and 14kW for the swimming pool are being supplied and installed by locally based company, Australian Sun Energy.

Val is also upgrading the motel’s pool from a chlorine system to a salt chlorinated system which should see her saving another 50-60% on chemical costs. Labour costs at the motel will also be reduced as the new pool system is fully automated and is controlled by a phone app.

It was against the bottom ranked side in the East Conference but the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers did what top sides should do - demolished the Gunners. The 113-69 scoreline was impressive given the Pioneers put in a consistent four quarter effort, had a strong field goal percentage (53.9), dominated the boards, 45 rebounds to 28, consistently found thier way to the charity stripe, convering 22 from 24 attempts and also had good form from beyond the arc, hitting nine from 24 from three point territory. All nine travelling players hit the scoreboard and had a rebounding stat and it also gave coach Richard Hill a chance to really rotate his playing roster and not take too much out of his stars ahead of the Sunday clash with the Basketball Australia line-up.
