THE STORIES BEHIND 2.5 MILLION KMS OF ENGINE PROTECTION
CASTROL RX SUPER... PROTECTING A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR GENERATIONS J.O. BERKEFELD Mt Gambier, South Australia
Berkefeld’s family business has serviced the Limestone Coast in South Australia for over 80 years. Four generations on, the Berkefelds supply Castrol lubricants to a diverse range of industries and businesses. To become solely a Castrol reseller was an easy decision for the family to make. The high price of equipment and machinery meant their customers wanted the best quality product available to protect their investment.
“ We’ve been selling Castrol RX Super for 35 years. When my customers service their truck or tractor, they can tell the difference when they use Castrol RX Super. Simply, quality is a lot easier to sell. My customers depend on their machinery to support their staff and their families. Castrol RX Super protects their business.” Kym Berkefeld – 3rd generation
For over 35 years Castrol RX Super has been protecting the livelihoods of Australians. Visit castrol.com/RXSuperproof for more Castrol RX Super stories. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - WHY CAN’T WE BE FRIENDS... By ROBBIE TANSEL talking about the actual friends I have in the real world. Mind you if I can remember my password I might have a crack at my Facebook friends as well.
I’m at a point in my life where I’m trying to cut back on the number of friends I have. I’m not talking about Facebook friends, by the way. I’m
What has brought about this drastic decision? Mainly I don’t have time for friends. Between my employment commitments, spending time with Donna and Shaquille, taking care of my jobs around the castle, finding ten minutes to come up with some flimsy premise and writing my article for Lifestyle1, and making sure my earhairs and eyebrows are somewhat under control, when would I have time for friends? I only have so much polite, friendly behaviour within me. I am forced on a daily basis to use a fair amount of this behaviour in my workplace, with customers and other staff members. That already takes all of my patience and a large amount of my pleasant behaviour. If I then use up what little is left on my friends, what is left for Donna and Shaquille. The obnoxious guy they’re normally stuck with. Apart from that, most of my friends are essentially morons. It’s not like I’m hanging out with Dave Grohl or something. If I could play word association with each of my friends, words I’d choose would be, tall guy, leprechaun, smiley guy, fart in a bottle, and psycho. Okay, those guys are all right, but I have lots of other friends I’d struggle to even describe.

To be honest, with the amount of voices in my head, I don’t particularly need to have friends. In most ways they’re much more convenient than my real friends. I don’t have to respond to phone calls or text messages. They don’t expect me to have them around for tea. I don’t have to buy them birthday presents. The only problem is they are so hard to get rid of. How exactly am I planning on getting rid of some friends? Luckily for me I naturally have the sort of grating, obnoxious personality that makes it hard for people to be friends with me. I have also come up with a criteria for deciding if a friend is worth keeping or not. They need to be good
gift givers, but generally say, “Please no gifts” on invitations when inviting me to their birthday celebrations. Ideally they will come with somebody who will entertain Shaquille and keep him out of my hair when we are spending time together. That could be another child of the same age, possibly an older child with a nurturing nature, a girlfriend who doesn’t have kids yet but wants to send the message her biological clock is ticking, or even a sheepdog or pet boa constrictor. Having a wife or girlfriend who is a talented cook definitely wouldn’t go astray. I’ll also consider people who are season ticket holders for a professional sports team and often have a ticket free. Essentially what I’m saying is that there’s going to have to be something in it for me. Don’t play all shocked with me. You’re no better than me. Think about all of your major friendships, and when you think of why you are friends with them, it will be something they provide that you want in your life. Company when you need it. A chainsaw you can borrow. Underwear when you have an accident. An alibi when you decide to bail on spending time with your wife’s family and go to the pub. I’m going to be a lot more careful selecting friends moving forward. I don’t want to end up with this problem again. It probably won’t be too difficult after my current friends read this article. I’ll pretty much be limiting new friend acquisitions to Transformers and Victoria’s Secret models. Standards are going to be pretty high. If you also feel overfriended like me, send me an email to email@example.com and I’ll give you some tips on how to convert your current friends to acquaintances, colleagues, or even enemies.
STOCK AGENT CALLS IT A DAY AFTER ALMOST FIVE DECADES “Boy, I don’t know how I found time to go to work.” Those were the words of Bob Tonkin’s father in the weeks after his retirement and given Bob, like his father, is heading into retirement with no real hobbies or outside interests – he takes great comfort from those words.”I honestly have no plans but I know I’ll find something to keep me busy,” Bob said. “I have been told it’s important to make sure I come up with a separate interest to my wife.” Bob drew stumps on a 48 year career as a stock agent on Friday, June 30 – a far cry from his childhood dream of being a woodwork teacher. “But my brain power didn’t allow that,” Bob said. “I flunked fourth year and I was going to have to do it again.” A reprieve came through his first job – a spare parts manager at Finsbury Engineering, a pump manufacturer. “”I was basically packing spare parts all day,” Bob said. “I actually rode my bike to work past my school, Croydon Boys Technical School.” Then his dad saw an advertisement in The Advertiser for a junior clerk branch trainee at Southern Farmers and Bob Tonkin won the position. It was the Adelaide born and bred boy’s first steps into the rural industry and
he never left. In fact, he never left the company either with Southern Farmers morphing into Bennett’s Farmers, then Wesfarmers Dalgety, then under the umbrella of the AWB (Australian Wheat Board), before becoming Landmark, now owned by the Canadian company Agrium. He started with Southern Farmers in June 1969 and he left his own Landmark franchise, which he had run with Peter George since February 12, 1996, on June 30. Bob’s traineeship saw him gain experience across half a dozen departments, including the stock department, building and fencing and general hardware. Then came the transfer to the Coonalpyn branch where he was employed to sell merchandise. “I was the general dog’s body,” Bob said. It was a move Bob believed was not only timely but was the making of him, as a man. “As my eldest brother said at my 60th, when Robert (which is what his family always called him) moved to Coonalpyn he became Bob Tonkin.” The bottom line is he was ready for a change and Coonalpyn was definitely that. “I was the youngest of four and my brothers and sister thought I was tied to mum’s apron strings,” Bob said. “I got to get away from that and be
that is something I have always been conscious of.” Given this city boy had no rural experience before he took on his junior clerk traineeship, it has just been a progressive education. “When I was in Adelaide in livestock department I remember going out to the abattoirs at Gepps Cross. And he has had many mentors that left an indelible mark on the popular stock agent. There was Darren Ardlie and Phil Rayson, at Coonalpyn. “They both taught me a lot.” While at Naracoorte, Bob Walters and Don Humphries had a huge influence on his career. So much so that, even now, Bob still refers to Don as Mr Humphries. “That’s how I was brought up – you called someone mister unless they told you different,” Bob said. “When you respect someone that’s what you call them and I always respected Mr Humphries – he really took me under his wing.” Of Bob’s 48 years in agribusiness, he spent 30 years at the saleyards, and his only slight regret is that he never forced himself to become an auctioneer. “That put a fair strain on Peter (George) because he did it all,” Bob said. “But basically I have no regrets whatsoever.” People that have found out Bob was basically a city boy have certainly been surprised. “I think it’s because not too many blokes from
the city these days would move to the country to become a stock agent.” One of the changes Bob has seen more recently in the industry is more young women joining their ranks – it’s a move Bob likes. “Some females are born for it,” he said. “It is becoming a more diverse industry.” The transition from stock agent to retiree has been a well planned one by Bob. Jeff Olafson joined the team 18 months ago and he has had a wonderful introduction into the Mount Gambier market. “He’s taken over my run and I know it’s in good hands,” Bob said. Bad knees were certainly part of Bob’s decision to walk away and after knee surgery, travel is really the only plans in place at this stage. There is a holiday to Queensland and a European adventure on the itinerary in the next 12 months, and, of course, with eight grandchildren, there will never be a shortage of things to do. myself. It certainly gave me a different outlook on life.” Bob boarded with the Jacobs family and it was a life like he had never known. “I came home for lunch every day to a three course meal and the same again for dinner,” Bob said. “They were so down to earth. I was glad to get out of the city and start doing something different.” He was in Coonalpyn for almost three years when he was transferred to Naracoorte, starting as a junior livestock agent and working his way up to a senior role. Then came Kalangadoo, Heywood and then Bairnsdale, in East Gippsland – each time he was branch manager and each time it was a promotion. It was in 1988 that he came back to the South East, transferred to the Mount Gambier branch, again as manager. Eight years later was when Bob and colleague Peter George were offered the opportunity to take on the franchise. In 2012, the duo sold off the merchandise part of the business and concentrated solely on livestock. “What I’ve loved is the contact with the people,” Bob said. “I enjoy getting to know them and I enjoy advising them in the right capacity for their benefit. Something I have always tried to do is include the farmer’s wives in decisions. They are as much a part of the partnership and

Sea Rescue Council, along with Superintendent Grant Moyle, the professional fishermen, SES, and community members continue to work towards improving safety along our coastline. Protocol and procedures are currently being worked through along with a list of professional fishermen’s contact details and other information to help set up registers for systems to assist call out procedures. Community support and volunteers will be called on once we have completed the preliminary work. The need for the service has been reinforced by further incidents over the last few months. Further public meetings will be held.

Community Update Mayor’s column It has been an extremely busy four months since my last update. I would like to share with you some of what has happened!
Anzac Day Port MacDonnell Dawn Service was well attended by over 300 people at the foreshore War Memorial. Thank you to the Blue Lake Highland Pipe Band, the Catafalque Party and Rev Dr Murray Earl for making the service so special. Breakfast at the Port MacDonnell Hall afterwards adds to the tradition. Congratulations to the Port MacDonnell & Districts RSL group, along with the volunteers and sponsors who help make this event the service it is. Lest we forget.
Mount Gambier & District Saleyards Celebrates 40 Years The facility at Glenburnie had sales turnover of $130 million and sees some of the best prime lambs, sheep
and cattle yarded each week. The Council, stock agents and the farming community and producers need to work together to ensure the facility prospers into the future. Direct sales to abattoirs has seen stock numbers going through the facility drop to the extent that it no longer pays its way. We have had significant deficits over the past couple of years requiring Council to fund the shortfall. The need to upgrade the yards and meet the requirements of the EPA, Council has taken out loans to pay for the improvements. More needs to be done to keep and improve the standard of the facility. Council, Agents and Management staff are looking at ways to improve the finances but it will require producers to work with Agents to keep the yards viable and remain price setters, not takers into the future as an integral part of the supply chain. Congratulations to all who have contributed to running and setting up the yards over the past 40 years; remember these are your facilities.
This facility was made possible by partnerships of State & Federal government, Grant Council, Eight Mile Creek Hall Committee and the fund raising efforts of the Men’s Shed. The facility is being well used, many projects being undertaken to benefit the community. This initiative helps men who want somewhere to mix with other men with similar interests in retirement and gives their partners a break as the adjustment from work to retirement can be a difficult one for some.
have our volunteers across the Council area from First Responders to CFS & SES volunteers. Jack Peacock, Malcolm Driscoll and Kevin Davis were presented with the Premier’s Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Volunteer Service awards for their dedication to the Geared2Drive Program.
Debutante Ball On the same night as GIJ, Hype Studio (Kim Cella) was presenting Debutante’s and partners at the Mount Gambier Show Hall. The young ladies looked very elegant, their partners very handsome, an extremely proud moment for their parents. The venue looked fantastic, congratulations to Kim and her team and the family and friends. It’s an honour for us to receive the debutantes as they begin another phase in their life’s journey.
Road Transport Workshop This event was instigated by the 90 Day Project undertaken by Minister Brock’s office the Department of Transport & Infrastructure with PIRSA. It is about having input into future infrastructure spend on regional roads to ensure they are fit for purpose. The proceedings should shape plans for our road networks, bridge renewals to get better outcomes for all road uses. High mass vehicle use and permits, limits on use, truck inspections and last mile issues were raised on the day.Further reports were sought and should be reported back in due course.

Ambassadors for our Region
Volunteer Morning Tea
You may be aware that Lynette and I rescued four French backpackers who had broken down near home. They stayed with us for four weeks and in the region for another 4 weeks. Vivien, Amelie, Nick and Marian gained work wherever they could and have now continued on their journey to explore Australia. They have great respect for our welcoming community and are very thankful to potato farmers at Mingbool and Kalangadoo. Last we heard from them they have been to Kangaroo Island, Uluru and are currently in Townsville. Friends for life and will be great ambassadors for our region.
Thank you to Linda Hay, Jayne Miller, Lisa Catalano and Heather Daly for organising the beautiful morning tea celebration. The Tarpeena residents had an unexpected tour through Nelson! Lucky for them, morning tea was still hot. Everyone enjoyed the time to network and reflect on how thankful we are to
In the last few months we have lost some well-regarded members of our community; one of those being Mr Barry Praetz. Barry along with Max Stuchberry with other offshore angling club members designed and help build the original Port MacDonnell ramp. It if wasn’t for their vision and determination, Port MacDonnell would not have had the facility such as it was. I know the Port MacDonnell Bowling Club also cherished his knowledge and tradesman skills. He will be missed by our community. Another local hero.
Small Schools Sports Day This years’ march down Commercial Street in Mount Gambier saw all the outlying schools from the District ready to compete against each other. The loud chanting and cheering behind me as I walked down the main street made me feel like the Pied Piper, a very proud moment. The gamesmanship and friendly rivalry ensures everyone does their best and their schools pride is enhanced. Well done. Ian Flett, Don Whan, Peter Creek & Mayor Sage at Saleyards

South East Community Legal Services The current State Government reduction of legal services will hit the most vulnerable when they need help the most. It is the regional areas of South Australia that will feel it most, isolation and access denied even though the Federal Government have continued to fund this service through our State Government. The District Council of Grant has moved that we garner support across all the regions of SA Local Government. A State Regional Mayoral delegation will be meeting Minister Rau soon with the intent of having the services reinstated to previous service levels. Country people in regional areas are not second class citizens and deserve this service.
Generations in Jazz (GIJ) What a great thing for music and our region. Congratulations must go to all involved including the hundreds of volunteers who help on the weekend at the venue, volunteers who assist at halls, schools and other alternative accommodation places ensures the event runs smoothly as well. There would be no other region in Australia that can boast such an event. To have been privileged enough to attend and to see those young talented musicians and singers in action was amazing. Keep up the great work.
RV Dump Points installed RV dump points have recently been installed at Port MacDonnell, Tarpeena and Carpenter Rocks, providing free waste disposal as part of Council’s RV Friendly Destination program.

CEO’s column 2017-18 Budget Council’s 2017/18 Annual Business Plan and Budget was adopted on 19 June 2017. The Annual Business Plan & Budget continues Council’s focus on financial sustainability through good long term financial planning, and asset management plans, both of which form the basis for our annual Budget. Council has budgeted for an operating surplus for the first time in a long period. Council is conscious of the impact of the current financial climate on the general public as well as the need to maintain services to the community. This budget is financially responsible, and we believe that we have adopted a responsible approach to general rates with a 2.5% general rate rise. As in past years, rates have been set by the Council to balance the level of services desired by the community, against the community’s capacity and willingness to pay. Despite rising costs, we have been able to keep rate increases to a minimum while continuing to ensure that valued services and infrastructure are maintained and key infrastructure projects are funded responsibly. $2.6 million has been allocated for new assets including $320,000 for the sealing of a 2km section of Mingbool Road with 50% coming from grant funding, $339,000 has been allocated for kerbing and channelling of township streets and $113,000 for upgrades to Community Wastewater Management Systems. Other major projects include “The Waterfront” project, with this being a $1.17million project over two years. An allocation of $585,000 has been included in this year’s budget to undertake a major revitalisation of the Port MacDonnell foreshore, with 50% funding sought from the State Government.

Council’s 2017/18 budget will also provide continued financial assistance with a 60% rebate on waste collection services for eligible concession card holders. The rebate is in addition to the State Government rate concession of Council rates.
Wed 4 & Mon 16
The Council’s net financial liabilities, being the most comprehensive measure of indebtedness, is expected to decrease by $450,000 in 2017-18 to approximately $3.8M at 30 June 2018 – this is equivalent to a $16,000 mortgage on a $500,000 property. Council continues to assess our future directions, operating practices and opportunities to improve our financial and operational performance without compromising services or increasing rates beyond what we consider the community will accept.

CALVES SHINE A LIGHT ON DAIRY CAREERS More than 100 excited students and teachers from the Limestone Coast region were awarded for completing Cows Create Careers – Farm Module, at the end of last month, in Mount Gambier The presentation day recognised eight schools from the region that had completed the program, including Grant High School, Lucindale Area School, Millicent High School, Compton Primary School, Mt Gambier High School, Kingston Community School, Glencoe Central Primary School and Penola High School. Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a Dairy Australia program that aims to increase the awareness of dairy industry careers in a very hands-on way. Secondary students are educated by rearing two three-week-old calves at school and the school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7 and 8 and years 9 to 11, at no cost. Since 2006 Dairy Australia has worked with thousands of students, teachers, farmers, industry advocates and communities through its investment into Cows Create Careers – Farm Module. Dairy Australia’s Industry Capability Program Manager Tracy Lloyd said the program started in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools. With support from Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors, the program has now grown to more than 245 schools
across Australia with more than 12,000 students expected to be involved in 2017. “Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a program that builds awareness of dairy industry careers – from teaching students about educational and vocational pathways, to profiling the diverse range of professional careers in the dairy industry,” said Ms Lloyd. “By bringing calves into schools, students have fun learning about the different skills required in the dairy industry.” The program has gained strong support from dairy farmers and advocates across Australia. Last year alone volunteers gave more than 2500 hours of their time across 23 Australian dairying regions. Locally, the project is funded by DairySA and receives additional support across the state from local companies La Casa Del Formaggio, SA Dairy Industry Fund, Total Result Ag Consulting Pty Ltd, MG Trading,
Devondale Murray Goulburn, Warrnambool Cheese & Butter, ProviCo, Parmalat, District Council of Grant, Peach Teats, Dasco, Daviesway and Skellerup who have continued to support the program in the Mount Gambier region. “Volunteers play a vital role in encouraging and supporting student career decision making,” Ms Lloyd said. “The program directly benefits from the generous dedication of volunteers who have knowledge of the industry and links to education and employment sectors.” RESULTS Winning School Juniors Glencoe Central Primary School Winning School Seniors Kingston Community School Above (left) - Winning Senior School Limestone Coast - Kingston Community School - Front: L-R, Katie Hines, Madison Murdock, Tiarna Murdock, Maggie

STUDENTS HEAD TO VIETNAM ON SCHOOL HOLIDAY HELPING HAND MISSION While thousands of adolescents will spend their mid-year holiday break resting at home the Bayview College contingent has spent its vacation time travelling to Da Nang and Tam Ky, Central Vietnam to lend their skills through the Schoolies with a Cause Program. Year 12 students volunteered to deliver a range of community development projects as part of their final year of schooling. This year the team comprised 12 students and three staff, who all brought a range of skills and abilities to the program. The students were involved in teaching English, water safety and life skills to school students, helping establish a food growing program for school children, learning about foreign aid and experiencing first-hand the work of the aid organisation, World Relief, in the Tam Ky community. Lucas Berry, 17, and Amelia Macklin, 17, have volunteered and were both looking forward to their trip. While having travelled to parts of Asia before, this will be the first time both students will work closely with a community to improve health, education and financial outcomes. “I hope to make a difference to the people living in the community.” said Lucas, “The trip will be an eye-opener and I’m sure once I return home
lifestyle1.net | 22
I will appreciate just how lucky we are to live where we do!” Amelia would like to leave with some of the projects established so the community can continue to improve their lives. Both students believed the trip would give them greater motivation to complete Year 12 upon their return, given how easy it is to access education in Australia. The team left on July 2 and return this Wednesday. COMBINING A PASSION FOR BIKES WITH A DESIRE TO HELP organiser Tyrone Mustey has kept it as a permanent fixture on the calendar. On July 22 & 23, the third Mount Gambier Moto Classica will be staged
It started in 2015 and was so successful, as both a showcase of classic and vintage motorbikes, and a Cancer Council fundraiser, that

at the City Hall, running from 9am to 6pm on Saturday and 9am until 2pm on Sunday. The pre-1985 classic and vintage motorcycle show was the brainchild of Tyrone. “I know of many local people associated with motorcycling, motorcycle racing and club members, who have been affected by various forms of cancer, Tyrone said. “The idea behind the event was to bring motorcycle enthusiasts together to display classic, vintage and racing machines and raise money for a worthwhile cause. The City of Mount Gambier has supported the event by providing the central venue and from there support has continued to grow. “The response from clubs, businesses and the motorcycle community has been very positive and the venue is brilliant, Tyrone said. The inaugural event raised almost $5000 and last year more than $3000 went into the Cancer Council coffers. Anyone interested in being part of the display should contact 0418 802 687 for more details.

MOUNT GAMBIER HOSTS REGIONAL CADET COMPETITION
The Mount Gambier St John Ambulance Cadet Division held regional competitions in Mount Gambier at the end of last month, the first time in more than a decade Mount Gambier had hosted the event. Sixteen cadets pitted their skills against each other, in junior and senior teams, in first aid and food tray competitions, with cadet of the year, NCO of the year and youth leader of the year nominations also up for grabs. Divisional leaders, Grade 5 officer Alecia Sheedy, cadet leader Hayden Tuffnell, and members Sharon Tuffnell, Lorenza McMahon, Karla Laine & Steven Perry were supported by visiting leaders and members of State Office, Cathy Maria, Tammy Maria, Kelly Gutherlet and Alex Coates at the regional competition. The food tray competition teaches cadets to prepare and cater for a specific scenario, following dietary requirements and post surgery needs and has remained a part of competitions as a throwback to when St John offered in-home nursing. First Aid competitions were held across three levels of skills - St John Juniors 8-11years, Junior Team 11-14 years and Senior Team 14-18 years, with teams treating up to three casualties, in a scenario putting their first aid skills to the test. The competitions are a valuable experience for all cadets, with the winning teams now qualifying to compete in Adelaide at State level next month.

We’re proud to call ourselves locals If you’re blind or vision impaired, The Royal Society for the Blind believes you shouldn’t have to travel for hours to receive the services you need. Or have to put up with a lengthy wait until someone flies in from the city every once in a while. That’s why we’ve reaffirmed our commitment to the South East with a brand new office, now open right in the heart of Mt Gambier.

TEENAGER WINS ART COMPETITION An artwork by a 16 year old student will promote Indigenous health across the south-west after winning an inaugural competition. Jerrika Pevitt’s Mootalarra Murmuration was last week announced as the winner of a competition to create an artwork to show the commitment of south west Victorian organisations to Indigenous health. It was arranged by the GROW Healthy Together Indigenous Advisory ‘Ka-ree-ta Ngoot-yoong Wat-nan-da’ Committee and auspiced by Portland District Health (PDH). The winning artwork will be used as the Indigenous visual identifier of health organisations in the GROW committee. The organisations in the advisory committee are PDH, Dhauwurd Wurrung Elderly and Community Health Service Inc, Windamara Aboriginal Corporations, Gunditj Mirring Aboriginal Corporation, Active Health Portland, Heywood Rural Health, Western District Health Service and Casterton Memorial Hospital. Jerrika, a year 10 student at Monivae College, said the artwork was a symbolic reference to the commitment of the organisations and cooperatives as it displays the power of coming together and working as one. Mootalarra means birds in the Dhauwurd Wurrung language; Murmuration is an English word for large flock of birds that fly as one, creating a cloud of birds. “The repeated bird pattern was inspired by the Gunditj spirit and its support and empowerment that it portrays to our people and our land,” she said. Jerrika has enjoyed a life-long love of art. “I’ve always found ways to draw and paint,” she said. As a Gunditjmara person, singing in the Dhungala Indigenous choir has also allowed her to express stories through songs. “We’ve written songs about birds and their importance to our land in many different Indigenous cultures and languages,” she said. “By illustrating these stories into art, I have found another way to express my culture.” This was Jerrika’s first entry into an art competition. The winning artist will receive $1600 prizemoney for the purchase and exclusive use of the artwork. Ms Giles said the artwork would be displayed in the organisations to assist in creating a culturally safe and welcoming environment that is sensitive to the cultural needs of its Aboriginal workforce and community. The winner was announced during PDH’s NAIDOC week celebrations.

Twelve players have been selected to represent South Australia at the Scholl Sport Australia Pacific School Games in December and a quarter of them come from the Limestone Coast – in fact all three local State representatives in the South Australian SAPSASA netball team are Tenison Woods College students. Amryn Bosko, who is following in the footsteps of her older sister Tyne, who was part of the same team in 2014, and Alyssa Duncan are both players in the Western Border Netball Association and both were part of the SA Country Championship winning 13 & Under team at the recent June championships. Sophie Varcoe is a
Mid South East Netball Association player and she has been selected in a shooting role alongside Amryn, while Alyssa is a swingman, holding down the goal attack or goal defence bib, depending on where the need arises. Amryn has been playing netball for five years, represents East Gambier at club level, and is a specialist goal attack and goal shooter, who prides herself on her accuracy. Her favourite players are former Millicent now Australian goaler Natalie Medhurst and Sunshine Coast Lightning star goal attack Stephanie Wood. “They are dynamic and accurate shooters,” Amryn said. “And Nyah Allen has been my local inspiration.” And there’s no denying Amryn’s passion for the sport. “I love playing netball because it can challenge you physically and mentally,” she said. “It is also a great way to socialise with your friends and family.” Sophie is somewhat of the veteran of the group, having been playing for seven years and the Kalangadoo Netball Club is her current home. “I love playing netball because it’s a team sport, it’s competitive and challenging,” she said. A strong goal shooter and goal attack, Sophie loves watching Australian goal shooters Caitlin Bassett and Caitlin Thwaites at work. Alyssa has been playing netball for four years and South Gambier is her home club. Equally capable at goal attack or goal defence, Alyssa is inspired by Gretel Tippet, the Australian Diamond and Queensland Firebird utility, and former local Mary Wilson. “I love playing netball because my two positions allow you to run in a lot of areas,” Alyssa said. The girls will be competing at the Pacific School Games from December 2-9 and the competition is being held in Adelaide. Above - Alyssa Duncan, Sophie Varcoe & Amryn Bosko have all earned State SAPSASA netball selection for the 2017 Pacific School Games in Adelaide in December.

LOCAL SPORT HISTORY IN THE MAKING History will be made on July 21 when under the lights at Vansittart Park, the South East Women’s League kicks off. The six club competition, incorporating East Gambier, West Gambier, South Gambier, North Gambier, Millicent and an All Stars team will go head to head in the season opener for what will be a six week season. The competition is just reward for the hard work of Keith Allan and the South East Female Football Academy he nurtured over many years, with two of its alumni, Sarah Allan and Jenna McCormick, part of the inaugural Adelaide Crows AFLW premiership team. Last year, knowing it was his last at the helm, Allan started to recruit even more players, across all ages and demographics and held skill sessions and practice matches and now his groundwork and the hard work of each of the football clubs involved has seen a vibrant six team competition emerge. It is an exciting opportunity for players and coaches alike as they piggyback on the overwhelming success of the inaugural AFLW season. Madi Freeman, who will pull on the boots for East Gambier, where she is a strong junior netballer, is one player who has been developed by Keith and she is thrilled to finally be playing on a bonafide competition. “I’ve always loved watching football either on television or watching dad coach local footy,” Madi
said. “I love the skill, athleticism and poise of the players involved.” Madi has never played junior football alongside boys but spent two years under Keith’s watchful eye in the academy. “I love the competitiveness of the game and the challenges it brings with fitness and skill sets,” she said. “The friendships made along the way are half the reason why I started and continue to play.” The Western Bulldogs supporter loves watching Marcus Bontempelli, Scott Pendlebury and Adam Treloar play and Madi is already known as a tough in and under player who wins plenty of contested ball. It is a slightly different story for West Gambier recruit Kaylah Earl, who has long been associated with the Kongorong Netball Club. “I haven’t been interested in playing football that long but I have always been interested in football itself as a supporter,” Kaylah said. She is one of those players coming into the competition with no football experience behind her. “I love how football brings people together and especially now with the expansion of the women’s league, there is no woman or man left behind. There is literally no game like it, with the shape of the ball and the size of the ground.” As a debutante Kaylah believes aspiring to higher honours are probably not on the cards for her. “But I’m so excited for the future of the younger girls and the next generation to be given the option to play AFL from grassroots level and have a pathway to follow and not have to either give is up or move away to keep playing.”
Another West Gambier player, Emily Dawe, was eager to give the competition a go but the 14 year age limit stymied that for the 13 year old. The talented netballer and basketballer does play for West Gambier in the 13 & Under competition, though, as she lives out her passion for football. “I had been talking to dad about playing football for a couple of years now and we have been occasionally having kicks outside,” Emily said. “I wanted to play football to try something a bit different and to help out West Gambier is they were short of players.” Her early taste of the sport has her committed to continuing at least next year. “I love that it is a bit rougher than netball and I can play it with boys and girls I know and am friends with,” Emily said. The St Kilda support admires the way Nick Riewoldt goes about his footy although at this early stage of her career, much like with netball, she has been earmarked as a defender. Then there’s Charlene Riley, a player who has already been talent identified at elite level, but for whom football is what she does for fun – Kyokushin karate is her real passion. “I had been interested in playing footy since watching the women’s exhibition matches in the AFL,” Charlene said. “My initial interest was in wearing the uniform – love the shorts and long socks.” That interest saw Charlene get involved last year when Keith was running the Sunday afternoon skills and match sessions. “I love kicking something that isn’t a person,” said the karate black belt. “What I love about watching and in

general is that it is more dynamic than other codes.” The Geelong supporter hasn’t ruled out pursuing higher honours, even joking about being part of a State Masters competition, but karate will always be number one. “I would love to play for the Crows, supporting South Australia and my eight year old self who was in the Crows Club at school she I was in Year 2,” she said. The change to Geelong came in Year 4. ‘My best friend told me she went for Geelong and I thought Cats were cooler than birds,” Charlene said. Charlene is thrilled, though, that, pathways are opening up for younger players. “The success that the AFLW had in its first season is great for local girls aspiring to play at the top level and for local women just wanting to give it a go and have a kick,” she said. “On the back of the inaugural AFLW season we have gone from a casual bunch of 20 or so girls in the South East Women’s football group to a league of six teams.” CONT. HISTORY IN THE MAKING FROM PAGE 35 The new competition is a great opportunity, too, for coaches. South Gambier coach Chris Edmonds first had to gain permission from his oldest daughter Laura, who was keen to be involved and once he had that, he was happy to
take the helm. “South Gambier is a great club and has been incredibly supportive so far,” the inaugural women’s coach said. “I have faith that that committee, players and supporters will do everything needed to give the women’s team every chance to be successful.” And the signs are already good according to the Demons coach. “I am impressed already at the level of interest and passion the girls are showing at training so my expectations will be that the players will be willing to try their hardest and really have a go. I would like to think that not only will the skill level improve with every game but I am interested to see how the players cope with the game sense and level of teamwork required to play the game.” The South coach believes this inaugural season is all about participation. “I would be more than happy for someone to turn up for even one game this year and hopefully get a better idea to see if this is the kind of sport they want to play,” he said.
“Hopefully the games are fun and successful and then the more formal and elite structures can be established later.” Peter Dempsey is coaching East Gambier, Clint Gallio and Reece Duncan are sharing the Millicent coaching duties, Garth Willoughby is at the helm at North Gambier, Shayne Hosking is in charge at West Gambier, and Ian Perryman, who was also very hands on with Keith Allan in 2016, is coaching the All Stars. In the opening round, East Gambier will take on South Gambier at 5.30pm, North Gambier will play Millicent at 7pm and the All Stars and West Gambier will go head to head at 8.30pm. All matches are being played at Vansittart Park. The competition will then revert to Sunday afternoon fixtures from July 30, with the top two teams playing off in the grand final on August 27. berth on a professional cycling team to ride in the Port of Portland-Fulton Hogan Tour of the Great South Coast. The prestigious tour, with its stages basically in Jack’s backyard, runs from July 26-30 and the 18 year old can’t wait. “I am really excited,” Jack said. “I can’t wait.” Riding for the Anchor Point team, a team that Jack has travelled with in the past two Tours of the Great South Coast, spending last year as a development rider, Jack has been training hard to ensure he is in the best possible shape when he joins the seven rider team that also includes Warrnambool’s Sam and Matt Lane, Portland’s Lachie Nolte and Dylan Lindsey, Queensland cyclist Nick Leonard and sprint specialist Michael Hale, from Melbourne. The most inexperienced of the team, Jack did ride for the Anchor Point team at the three day Tour of King Valley, in Wangaratta, another tour that, like the Tour of the Great South Coast, is part of the national road series. “I was just happy to finish,” Jack said. “I had a puncture, I crashed and basically everything went wrong but I still finished.” Jack loves track cycling as well but it is road racing where he believes his future lies. “I don’t have the speed for track,” Jack said. “I think I’m better at road and I love the endurance events.” That is borne out in his recent results at the prestigious 100 Mile Classic – the Mount Gambier Cycling Club’s premier annual event – finishing fifth in 2016 and eighth this year. Pundits believe it is those results that got him over the line for this Anchor Point team berth from team manager Andrew Lindsey. “It’s good to know they think I’m
capable of competing,” Jack said. Last year, as a development rider, he saw the team meetings and listened to the tactical discussions ahead of a day’s racing. “I am really looking forward to learning all about that side of road racing,” Jack said. “I really want to end up in a professional team one day and this will be a real learning curve for me.” For now, the 18 year old is taking this opportunity as a work experience venture – there will be no payment. But he has trained as he would if he was. Juggling full time work as a machine operator at Mondelez International, with his training, Jack has been fitting in four hour long rides and bursts of short intensity training. A task made tougher given Jack is a shift worker – sometimes riding in the morning and sometimes tackling his rides in the dark after day shift. And Jack will absolutely be immersing himself into the team environment. The day before the tour kicks off in Mount Gambier on July 26, he will be joining the team in rented accommodation and then travel with the team as he has in 2015 and ’16 – but this time he’s one of the riders, moving out of the team car following the riders and actually hitting the road on his bike. The Tour of the Great South Coast includes two criteriums and four road races, taking in Mount Gambier, Port MacDonnell, Heywood, Casterton and Cape Bridgewater before winding up on Portland’s foreshore on Sunday, July 30. The tour is backed by the City of Mount Gambier, District Council of Grant and Glenelg Shire. And the opportunities might not stop here with another tour in a month for which Jack has been earmarked. There is also the Under 23 Australian Road Championships, in Ballarat, and that is a huge date on Jack’s cycling calendar. So from that 11 year old watching dad Daryl ride, Jack is looking to map out at path that could well end up being a career. He’s hoping the Tour of the Great South Coast is just the first chapter.
