YOUTH AUTHOR LAUNCHES FIRST NOVEL Funny how things work out. Mallory Whiting had what amounts to a nightmare when she was 10 years old and in June this year, as a 13 year old
she launched her first novel based on that scary dream. “I told mum about the dream and she told me to write it down,” Mallory said. “And that’s what

I did – without the really scary bits.” Before she knew it, she was developing characters, creating problems and then solving them and also before she knew it, there were 38,000 words on the page and her debut novel Behind The Wall was well and truly on it way. Once edited it became a 32,000 word masterpiece and the story of Ella, Mallory’s lead character, was brought to life thanks to self publishing software and a supportive family. The novel is aimed at children aged seven to 11 and was unveiled at the Mount Gambier Library on June 24. And even before her debut offering hit the shelves, Mallory was working on a follow up project – a fantasy novel aimed at her peers, called Suburbia. Behind The Wall might have been out in the public domain sooner but Mallory’s mother Cathy didn’t actually read her daughter’s musing for 12 months. And while Cathy has been at the heart of the project, there has been some other helping hands along the way. There was a family friend that was a harsh critic but who absolutely helped Mallory finetune that dream into an engaging children’s story. “She started writing old style, using the language of Enid Blyton, her favourite author when she was younger and they helped her bring it up to current times,” Cathy said. “It really helped her develop the characters and improve the book.” But as Mallory points out that refinement didn’t ultimately change the story - the story of a country girl who

heads to the city and learns a whole lot of lessons. The Compton Primary School student vividly remembers when the novel returned from the printers and the dream was well and truly a reality. “Mum brought it straight into school,” Mallory said. Making it even more special is the fact the whole project has Mallory’s fingerprints all over it. Obviously, she is the wordsmith, but she also designed the novel cover and is responsible for logo for Falling Star Stories – her self-publishing business.”I
came up with the name for our dog, Star, who died and that’s why I called it Falling Star,” she said. The cover is based on Mallory herself, as Ella, as well as some of her friends that she believed most looked like the other major characters in the novel. Prior to the launch, Behind The Wall had only been read by family members but some of the feedback was already promising. “One eight year old said it was her favourite book in the world,” Mallory said. And thanks to Compton SSO and librarian Shirley Roulstone, Mallory was totally comfortable headlining her book launch and telling everyone about her story. “She has been fabulous and gave me some good tips on public speaking.” So with Mallory as the brains behind the operation and mum Cathy the editor, sister Sasha also has a role and will be looking after the business side as the orders start to come in. Mallory’s father Peter is also in communications so she certainly has a strong team as she continues her passion for writing. It is something she does up to three times a week and normally for around half an hour, normally racking up around 2000 words and her new fantasy novel is already 16,000 words in. “I don’t give myself a deadline,” Mallory said. “I will just keep working on it and when it’s done, it’s done. When I right it’s like a Choose Your Own Adventure. I don’t plan it out so even I don’t know where the story is going to go.” Behind The Wall can be purchased be emailing Mallory at firstname.lastname@example.org and will also be stocked by Mount Gambier’s Collins Booksellers. Watch this space for the release of Suburbia.

GRADUATE EARNS FIRST PROFESSIONAL GIG ALONGSIDE ENTERTAINMENT ROYALTY Nothing in life is easy and trying to make your way in the entertainment industry is one of the most daunting challenges going around. Your passion is singing, dancing, acting or all three and you have to try and stand out from the pack to earn a living. Mount Gambier’s Jaylee Waters joined a long line of Limestone Coast based performers looking to carve a career in entertainment and so she headed to Ballarat for the highly rated musical theatre course, graduating at the end of last year. Fast forward six months and Jaylee has secured her first professional gig – a milestone in any career. And she will be working alongside some of the biggest names in Australian music and theatre – John Waters, Ben Mingay, Tim Freedman and Brian Mannix. Jaylee earned one of 35 places in the chorus of Paris: A Rock Odyssey – a tribute to Jon English. The show’s run in Melbourne might only be from July
13-15 but it is a highly anticipated show where Jaylee will get to showcase her vocal skills and also rub shoulders with some entertainment royalty and make connections that could serve her well down the track. Performing at the Melbourne Recital Hall, rehearsals started at two nights a week for three weeks, ramped up closer to the production date and then for the three days leading into the performances, rehearsals will be intense. “It’s a really quick rehearsal process,” Jaylee said. “It’s a small step but it’s an important step.” And the fledgling performer then heads straight into another gig through Echelon Productions – three weeks in Adelaide as part of a children’s show. ‘I really do enjoy working that space with children and so I am lucky to have this opportunity and I’m really looking forward to it,” she said. Ironically, Jaylee is all too familiar with the stage door and has been asked on more than one occasion for an autograph or photo. She works in the bar at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne and the stage door is her entry and exit point for work. “When I am leaving I do get asked for selfies and things like that and I have to tell them that I wasn’t in the show – one day,” Jaylee said. Aladdin is the current show playing at the Melbourne theatre icon and Jaylee dreams of one day using that stage door as a performer. So much is talked about how strenuous the audition process can be – talk to Jaylee and she will tell you even getting to that part of the process

is tough. “It is hard to even get in the audition room,” she said. “I’m lucky I do have an agent and that helps.” But it is not the case that anyone who wants to have a crack can audition, you have to make your case well before you even get to walk in the door and showcase your skills. “It is such a tough industry but I am continuing to work on my skills,” Jaylee said. She has vocal and dance lessons every week. “It is not for the faint hearted,” she said. “There are
so many talented people out there. I just have to stay positive and keep working hard.” Jaylee has always been committed to musical theatre as her career path of choice and that remains the same and she also certainly has an affinity for children’s theatre as well. “I have done some commercial work and I would love to get into film and television,” she said. “You really do have to keep your options open and have a foot in every door in this industry.”

CALL GOES OUT FOR SECOND HAND BOOKS A community coalition is calling for donations of good quality second-hand children’s books to fill Little Book Boxes with the aim of increasing the rate of early childhood exposure to reading through a program called Growing Greater Readers Glenelg (GGRG). GGRG is a community-wide and multi-dimensional response to reducing the high rate of local children who are entering formalised education with low literacy skills and low or no exposure to books or reading. Convened locally by United Way Glenelg, it is tapping into the experience and success of Southern Grampians local action group Beyond the Bell, who initiated the program. United Way executive ifficer Nicole Angelino said the premise is to fill Little Book Boxes with children’s books and place in public venues where families congregate all over the Glenelg Shire. “Once the Little Book Boxes have been established, families will be encouraged to “take a book, read a book and return a book” in any of the Little Book Boxes locations,” Ms Angelino said. “While the Imagination Library, coordinated in partnership with Portland Aluminium, is making a real difference to children accessing books in the home every month, we also need the whole of community response when making long-term cultural shifts in attitude to literacy. “United Way Glenelg & Beyond the Bell continues to look for these

opportunities, such as the Little Book Boxes. “Children will be able to read books wherever they go in the community.” The project will be coordinated by South West VCAL students who will pick up donated books, sort and fill the book boxes and place them out in the community. Drop off points for the donation of good quality second-hand and new books are located at Portland Library, Port of Portland, Portland Aluminium, All Saints Outreach, Lifeline Opportunity Shop, RSPCA Op Shop, South West Tafe and Portland Secondary College. If your business would like to host a Little Book Box please contact South West Tafe VCAL on (03)5521 0465.
The community coalition, made up of members of United Way Glenelg, Glenelg and Southern Grampians Local Learning Employment Network, Glenelg Libraries and South West Tafe have led the charge, gaining resource support from individuals, community groups and businesses such as Whiteheads Timbers, Portland Community Garden and South West Tafe VCAL students. 1/2 cup plain flour 100g red glace cherries 1/2 cup)condensed milk 3/4 cup desiccated coconut 4-6 drops of red food colouring (optional)
Method Preheat oven to 160C. Lightly spray a 22 x 7.5cm (base measurement) bar pan with oil. Line the base and 2 long sides with baking paper, allowing sides to overhang. Use a metal spoon to stir the butter, Cherry Ripe and 120g dark chocolate in a saucepan over medium heat until the chocolate melts. Set aside to cool slightly. Whisk the egg and combined sugar into the chocolate mixture. Add flour. Stir until smooth. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until crumbs cling to a skewer inserted into the centre. Cool slightly. Finely chop half the cherries. Cut remaining cherries in half. Combine cherry, condensed milk and coconut in a bowl. Stir in the food colouring. Spoon cherry mixture over the brownie. Smooth surface. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until light golden. Set aside to cool completely. Remove from the pan. Heat the remaining chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl on medium, stirring every 30 seconds, for 2 minutes. Reserve 2 tablespoons melted chocolate. Pour the melted chocolate over the bar and spread over the top and sides. Drizzle the reserved chocolate lengthways to create lines. Set aside until chocolate sets. Slice.

Students and staff at Mary MacKillop Memorial School in the electorate of Barker will have full use of a new covered outdoor learning area known as the Father Paul’s Shelter thanks to Federal Government funding. Member for Barker Tony Pasin officially opened the new facility in Penola last week on behalf of the Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham. “It was great to visit Mary MacKillop Memorial School and see the new facilities firsthand and the impact they will have on students’ learning potential,” Mr Pasin said. Federal funding amounting to $185,000, from the Capital Grants Program, which provides funding for non-government schools to improve capital infrastructure where they otherwise may not have access to sufficient capital resources, was allocated to the project. Mr Pasin said students and the whole school community would benefit from these new facilities. w“Sport is about teamwork, strategy and fun,” Mr Pasin said. “The lessons learned on the football field, netball court, running track or swimming pool provide lessons for life.” The Education Minister was also hopeful the investment would be of great benefit to the Mary MacKillip Memorial School community. “While buildings alone do not make a great school, I hope students and staff will enjoy learning and be inspired by these new facilities,” Minister Birmingham said. “The Australian Government is committed to improving the quality of our schools and equipping students with the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.” For more information on the Quality Schools reform package visit: www.education.gov.au/ qualityschools Above - Nick Zema (Chair School Board), Principal Maureen Hanrahan, Father Dean Marin, Archbishop Philip Wilson DD JCL, Member For Barker Tony Pasin & Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi

Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association had another break from the Kimberly-Clark premiership season to hold its fourth association championship. This championship was the Faith Jewellers/David & Jane Peacock Mixed Pairs Twenty-nine entries competed for the 2017 Mixed Pairs title. The husband and wife pair, from Glenburnie, with Kristy Errock as the skipper and Brad Errock, as her lead, met the in form combination of Rod Fleming, who was skippering and his lead, Sue Jolley, from the Commercial Club, in the first semi final, with the Errock team winning 12 shots to eight. In the second semi-final the Glenburnie pair of Perria Davis, skippering, and Marie Pedlar, leading, defeated the Blue Lake Bowlers pair of Kevin Jones and Janice Knight, 14 shots to one. Davis and Errock then met in the final with both teams playing exceptionally well and deserving of their place in the final. In the final, the Errock team won the first four ends and had a comfortable lead only to allow Perria and Pedlar to score two shots on the fifth end, but they
couldn’t score enough shots to make an impact, giving the Errock team victory to take out the 2017 Faith Jewellers/David & Jane Peacock Mixed Pairs Championship 10 shots to two. The consolation semi-finals were contested between Kym Jones and Leanne Henschke from the Mount Gambier Bowls Club who defeated Zac and Fiona Pearson from Post -Tel, 5 shots to 4, and the second semi final saw the Post-Tel/Saints combination of Kevin Burn and Shirley Gifford defeat Veronica Opie and Ken McCormick, from Saints, 8 shots to 7. Burn and Gifford beat Jones and Hentschke in the final of the consolation, 10 shots to 4. Above - Faith Jewellers/David & Jane Peacock Mixed Pairs Championship Finalists (form left) - Brad Errock, Kristy Errock, Perria Davis, Marie Pedlar, Kym Jones, Leanne Henschke, Shirley Gifford & Kevin Burn.

BULLDOGS BACK IN TOWN WESTERN BORDER NETBALL East Gambier 14.17 (101) d Millicent 6.11 (47) Inconsistency continues to plague Millicent but coach Clint Gallio remains buoyant that is the Saints can put together four quarter performances, they can match it with the best. “We have to maintain it for four quarters,’ Gallio said. “It’s A Grade footy and you can’t play five to 10 minutes of good footy a quarter.” It costs the Saints dearly yesterday, as East Gambier returned to the winners list with an emphatic 54 point victory. “When we played good footy we definitely matched it with them, the scoreboard doesn’t show that but when we got our good ball movement going, we matched it with them,” Gallio said. The open ing quarter was an arm wrestle but Millicent just couldn’t get a score on the board, missing a couple of gettable shots to end up only six behinds in what was an even opening term. “If you don’t take your chances early you fall behind right from the start,” he said. “We were competitive at the start and didn’t capitalise on that.” It was East’s tall timber that troubled the Saints with Mark Rumbelow proving a handful up forward and Jayden Eldridge showing his usual composure and class at half back. “Rumbelow is a hard man to stop – he takes a good mark and he is a really good target for them,” Gallio said. “And Eldridge – he’s a very good player, he is so calm and just soaks up the pressure.” Matt Willson also gathered a swag of possessions. The Saints were best served by Peter Duncan, who kept presenting all day in the forward line and also spent some time in the midfield. “He was definitely our most consistent performer,” Gallio said. Brady Gibbs, who is a new fact at McLaughlin Park in 2017, also showed he might be ready to take on a new role, playing half back for the first time. “I thought he was outstanding,” Gallio said. “And Dylan Bromley was also good – he took some good marks around the ground and is a big presence for us.” Below (left) - Millicent’s Peter Duncan drives the ball forward. LOCAL SPORT BULLDOGS CHALLENGE BUT SAINTS SURVIVE
Millicent 61 d East Gambier 46 They didn’t get the points but after a slow start to 2017, as they readjusted to life without Rachael Hines and Eilish McKay, East Gambier showed at the weekend, it could still be a contender – a genuine contender. They went down to the undefeated reigning premiers by 15 goals but it was a consistent four quarter effort against a quality opposition. They would be disappointed about letting it get out to that 15 goal margin
but there were plenty of good signs. The first quarter was an even affair, with Bo Creek at her daring best, hunting the interception when Millicent looked to swing the play with a cross court pass. Her efforts on creating turnover ball were matched at the other end by Hayley Dunn and Kimmi Varcoe who ensured any missed shots became defensive rebounds and by the first change Millicent enjoyed a three goal lead. Tenille Gray, who was a key playmaker in the opening quarter attracted some whistle in the second and that gave Millicent some easy turnover ball which they were happy to convert and just as Dunn and Varcoe were dominating the rebounding stats at their end of the court, so, too, Brenna McKay, was making her presence felt with outstanding rebounding as Millicent’s radar was a little off. Both sides were placing good defensive pressure on through the middle third as teams struggled to transition easily and Saints wing defender Madi Turner picked up some crucial ball with her willingness to contest and put her body on the line. The scoreline at the main break was 30-25, with Millicent in the lead, and the script followed a similar theme in the second half. Sarah Lock was on the move, creating space for Gray and finishing accurately, while Gray also worked her way back into the contest and was a focal point for the Bulldogs. At the other end, it was in the third quarter where Keah Lynch came to the fore, using her pace on the baseline to great effect and her team mates found her time and time again as McKay and Creek worked overtime to contain the in form Millicent goalers. In the last quarter both teams seemed to find better flow in offence but with Donna Denton converting 10 from 10, the Saints maintained control and remained

undefeated. Audine Bryant was again unstoppable for the Saints, while Turner had arguably her best game for the season. Sara Smith looks set to secure the wing attack bid for East and she, in tandem with Tarsh McCallum, gave the Bulldogs plenty of drive and good delivery into the shooting circle. In other matches, West Gambier accounted for South Gambier and North Gambier outlclasse Casterton Sandford. Left - East Gambier’s Tarsh McCallum in full flight. It was certainly a different build up for the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers at the weekend with a rare Saturday night home fixture but it turned out to be as good a crowd as the Pioneers, who usually play home games on a Friday night, have enjoyed in 2017 – the match was a sell out and there were 70 standing room only tickets sold as well. The Pioneers were hosting the Ballarat Miners and while the 100-75 scoreline suggests a comfortable win, it was anything but with both sides boasting two of the most talented line-ups in the SEABL. The Pioneers had an insanely good opening quarter scoring wise against Geelong last weekend and after trailing by two at the first change, they all but repeated it at the weekend in the second quarter against Ballarat. The 35-11 quarter broke open the contest ahead of half time. “The second half was a dog fight,” coach Richard Hill said. “Ballarat came out really strong.” Strong, too, was the performance of Brad Hill, who finished the game with 28 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists. Not coincidentally, he was held scoreless in the third and it was the Pioneers’ worst as Ballarat looked to undo the damage done in the second quarter. “Brad had an unbelievable first half,” Hill said. “He had 20 (points), 10 (rebounds) & four (assists) by half time.” The win was all the meritorious given star import Daniel Alexander was on the bench for more of the contest than would normally be the case courtesy of picking up three fouls in the first three and a half minutes of the game. Luke Jamieson, though, made the most of his extended court time with 21 points and 10 rebounds. “It was his best game for the club,” Hill said. “And Jack Madgen gave us great punch off the bench.” Tom Daly’s super consistent season, his first as captain, continued as the Pioneers now look to hosting Nunawading. “There’s no respite,” Hill said. “But we do have a lot of players in really good form and it is reward for effort for the guys because they have been working really hard.” The Nunawading game, at the Icehouse on Friday night, looms large in terms of finals – win this and the Pioneers can almost lock away hosting two finals once the play offs roll around.
