COVER - NEW FOODLAND OPENS ITS DOORS Mount Gambier Central welcomes Foodland to the centre with the doors opening this week. The new Foodland supermarket is owned and operated by South Australian family company, Carter’s Retail Group. Carter’s Retail Group owns and operates independent supermarkets throughout regional South Australia, including Naracoorte and Robe. Carter’s Retail Group owner Tim Carter said the new supermarket will offer the people of Mount Gambier the choice of independent shopping in a supermarket unlike any other in the city. “The major emphasis of the supermarket will be on South Australian produce and brands,” he said. “It will include a full scale butcher and fresh meat production, gourmet service deli, fresh fruit and vegetables and an artisan cheese bar and bakery. “We have established strong relationship with many South Australian food producers during our 20 years in retail and customers can expect to find brands and products in Mount Gambier Foodland that are often not available in the chain supermarkets. “We are excited to be investing in Mount Gambier and to give the residents and district of Mount Gambier the choice of shopping with a great local SA independent brand. “All my family works within our stores and we are very customer driven. We listen to our customers’ needs and ideas and value the views of our customers and staff.”

COMING EVENTS

Mr Carter said the new Foodland store would provide a new level of fitout and customer service for the Mount Gambier region. Because the store is locally owned, profits would remain in South Australia rather than going interstate or overseas. “Customers can expect good old fashioned customer service and will not have to deal with self-serve checkouts,” he said.

challenge, the chance to be part of the 10th anniversary event was too good to refuse. “It is definitely out of my comfort zone,” Nicole said. “But after seeing so many Lucindale contestants in it, it had always been something I thought I would really like to do.” She did still take a little while to sign on the dotted line, realising the competition would be time consuming and take time away from her young family. But the chance to raise funds for the local school, through the Lucindale Area School Scholarship Fund, along with the chance to learn a whole new skill and have a lot of fun, saw Nicole commit to the 2017 event. “I knew it would be hard but it is definitely harder than I thought – there’s a lot more involved,” she said. “I thought the waltz was tough enough and then we learnt the hip hop and that was about 10 times harder again.” Partnered with Cody Smith, who is in his second Swinging With The Stars, Nicole says choreographer Kim Cella, from Hype, has admitted the 10th anniversary program is a tough one. “But we’ve got very good dance partners and Kim (Cella) is full of confidence,” she said. “You do get quite excited when you can actually pull it off and do the dance.” Nicole has enjoyed extra rehearsals with Penola’s Amanda Flint and Robe’s Jack Kelly – having the rehearsals in Penola to cut down on the travelling.

Nicole’s main fundraiser was last month – a Ladies Night Out at the Lucindale Town Hall. Pop up stalls by local businesses, a fashion parade by Naracoorte’s Store 21, drinks and nibbles and jewellery and clothing stalls made for a great night out. “I would have been happy with 60 people but there were 116 there,” she said. “It has blown my mind, the support that I have had. Being in a small town when you are involved in different community groups they all sort of get behind you.” That has seen the ladies golf club, where Nicole has recently taken up the sport, use its monthly medal luncheon last week to raise funds to boost Nicole’s tally. She has also run a Rymill wine drive. “I think people have been so happy to help because they know it is going to a good cause and will benefit our community’s youth,” Nicole said. She also said the group of dancers

she has been working with have been a great group and made the experience even better. Even with Kim Cella and the dance partners away for competition at the beginning of this month, the eight stars still got together, rehearsed their hearts out and then headed out to lunch. The countdown is now on to the June 24 performances. “I am looking forward to have a bit of fun and having a pretty good laugh at myself,” Nicole said. The Lucindale entrant could have an advantage over some of her competitors. “I have been seeing a hypnotherapist in Naracoorte to help me with my memory and confidence,” Nicole said. “I feel like it’s really helping.” Above - Nicole Hocking with dance partner Cody Smith at Hype Dance Studio

GIVE ME 5 FOR KIDS CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY The target is $15,000 and it will all go to local paediatric wards at Mount Gambier, Naracoorte and Millicent hospitals. It’s the annual Give Me 5 For

Kids charity initiative spearheaded by Triple M. Nationwide millions have been raised by the Southern Cross Austereo

Network campaign. Running for the month of June, the aim has always been to help purchase valuable resources for the assessment and treatment of children, as well as upgrading of the maternity units of local children’s wards. Established in the mid 1990s as a simple coin drive, the Give Me 5 For Kids has topped the $14miilion mark over the journey and the list of equipment that has been funded in this region is extensive. The Mount Gambier Hospital has been able to purchase a paediatric ultrasound; cots and mattresses; oxygen and air blenders; paediatric monitors for theatre; pulse oximeters; colour coded paediatric emergency car; theatre equipment, standardised tests and resources for allied health therapy and paediatric wheelchairs, for kids with

short and long term needs. Naracoorte Hospital has added a neonatal and paediatric recusitation trolley; a paediatric monitor and enjoyed a maternity unit upgrade to benefit bubs and their mums. Millicent Hospital has been able to afford outdoor play equipment and play station and games. Limestone Coasts Triple M’s general manager Patrick O’Donnell said Triple M was proud to be involved in Give Me Five for Kids, helping to raise much needed funds for the children’s wards of our local hospitals. “We have raised over $250,000 locally for our hospitals over the last 10 years, and are proud to be involved in such an initiative,” he said. Community members are being urged to listen to Triple M for details

on how they can become involved in this important cause, which can be as simple as making a donation, or holding a fundraising event. Newly returned Radio Triple M breakfast announcer Ewan Grant, who was for so long the face of the local campaign, was thrilled to be back promoting a cause close to his heart. “Every year the Limestone Coast community digs deep to support a local charity where the money raised in the Limestone Coast directly helps families and children in the region,” Ewan said. “The generosity of sporting groups, service clubs, community organisations and the general public is overwhelming. And the business community of the region is beyond words. So many businesses across the region are already involved in the fundraising and there are plans in the works for a massive fundraising push towards the end of the month.” Donation tins are out across the city and the region and flyers will be going out to schools. A NEW PROJECT & A NARROW ESCAPE Former Mount Gambier performers continue to make their mark on the national and international stage with Bronson Pfeiler securing a place in the Australian production of the live stage show Paw Patrol. Cast in the role of Marshall, and also as understudy to Rider, in the production’s international tour, Bronson’s first stop was Manilla where he performed live on the Umagang KayGanga morning breakfast Manila television show at the end of last month. And the gods must be watching over the former Mount Gambier triple threat, who missed getting caught up in the Resort World Manilla shooting that claimed 37 innocent lives. Bronson (pictured) and the rest of the cast and crew had finished final rehearsals only hours before the rampage, leaving the resort, where they had shows booked, to return

to their own accommodation. It saw the cast and crew return to Australia as soon as flights allowed, leaving the Manilla season behind them. The next leg of the Paw patrol tour will be Singapore in August and then New Zealand in October and November.

MAKING SOCIAL MEDIA WORK FOR YOU • TWITTER Why your Business should be on Twitter If you haven’t been living under a rock for the last decade, you probably would have heard of Twitter. However, if you’re anything like most small businesses, you don’t use it. But today is the perfect time to jump on board the Twitter bandwagon- it is the perfect customer service tool and offers great analytics. It has proved its worth in recent years as the No.1 platform for breaking news, catching current trends as soon as they appear, and a fine resource for engaging with customers and influencers. Your favourite brand, celebrity or competitor is bound to have a Twitter accounthaving your own profile makes it easier than ever to get in touch with them. Want more followers, or even a partnership with your favourite brand? It’s all possible with Twitter. How to get started: 1. Establish a domain name and bio. Make sure your tweets are worded in such a way they can quickly grab attention at a moments notice- it’s a busy world, people want short, quick updates as they go about their day. 4. Engage with your audience

Instagram and any other elected platforms you have. Having the same name, profile picture and description makes it easier for your customers to find you. 2. Follow, follow, follow… Twitter will help you expand your professional network- once you’ve set up your account, make sure you are following your customers, business partners, suppliers, contractors and vendors, your competitors and peers, and other local businesses.

3. Start talking! Once you’ve found your audience, you need to find the sweet spot between what your target audience wants to hear and things that will promote your business. A great way to do this is to listen- look at what they’re talking about and focus on how your products and services can benefit them. If someone follows you, be sure to send them a message thanking them for connecting with you, and ask them whether there’s anything you can do for them. Going the extra mile for a new customer ensures they’ll stick around. 5. Drive traffic to your website. At the end of the day, your main goal is to increase sales, right? That’s why we all use social media, one way or another. Like Instagram and Facebook, your content should be based by driving people to your website. EXHIBITION REAPS REWARDS FOR LIBRARY

TIME TO GET KNITTING Twisted Threads held its annual exhibition at the library last month and not only was the exhibition a success but it raised double the money it usually does for the group to donate back to the library. “We raised about $250 this year and that will go back into paying to renew the subscriptions for knitting magazines, a new subscription for a UK croquet magazine and new books for the library,” group member Julieanne Woodruff said.”Crochet is really taking off with younger people and we want to get some crochet books that are up to date.” Twisted Threads held their first exhibition in the library right after its opening and is one of the longest serving groups to call the library home. PROUD TO CALL AUSTRALIA HOME The relaxed community of Portland is a far cry from the bustling streets of Bangladesh and Singapore, but for Faruk Ahmed and his family the Glenelg Shire is the only place they will call home after becoming Australian citizens. Mr Ahmed, his wife and two children became Australian citizens at a special Citizenship Ceremony last week alongside fellow shire residents Eileen Milich and Paul Naveen. Mr Ahmed said that his family were very proud to call the Glenelg Shire home. “After becoming an Australian citizen we feel that we are now part of Australia, as well as being part of Portland,” he said. “We are originally from Bangladesh but we have spent the past five years in Singapore amongst busy traffic and 30 floor skyscrapers, a completely different lifestyle to Portland. We moved to Portland for a better quality of life and for secure employment opportunities and we haven’t looked back since. We feel a great sense of community in Portland, it is simple things such as being able to recognise your neighbour and say hello to them down the street that really make a difference. The people have made an effort to welcome us and now the children have so many friends they do not want to leave. This is our home now, we are very happy living here.” Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said that she was humbled to be able to welcome the shire’s newest citizens. “It is one of the most rewarding aspects as Mayor to be able to officially confer our new citizens,” she said. “I congratulate all our new citizens and their families on making their commitment to Australia and wish them well as they continue to forge a new life for themselves here in the Glenelg Shire.” Above - Glenelg Shire’s newest citizens Tasnia Ibnat, Faruk Ahmed, Ahmad Abrar Afiq and Nasrin Akter with Cr Alistair McDonald at the Citizenship Ceremony last week.

The good news about Worldwide Knitting in Public Day is you don’t even have to own knitting needles – in fact, you don’t even have to know how to knit. Mount Gambier’s Twisted Threads textile group is hosting the event for the third time and has even put together free knitting kits containing needles, a pattern and small balls of wool. “You can come along, start it off and then take it home,” group member Julieanne Woodruff. Twisted Threads are also offering ongoing help – all you need to do is pop along to the Mount Gambier Library, any time between 9.30am and 1pm, and the Twisted Threads members will be there ready to assist. The Mount Gambier Library is hosting the Worldwide Knitting in Public Day. Internationally it is celebrated on June 10 but with the Long Weekend and no library space available, Twisted Threads opted for June 14. They will be on site from 9am to 2pm and anyone is welcome to come along.

“You can come along and watch, have a cuppa or just a chat,” Julieanne said. The Worldwide Knitting in Public Day follows the same mantra as the Twisted Threads group – creativity, conversation and coffee and not necessarily in that order. The celebration of knitting is aimed at bringing the craft back into the mainstream again, debunking the myth it is just something nana does. “It is very good for kids with developing coordination,” Julieanne said. “It is also great for stroke victims who sometimes need to relearn things again. It is also recommended for mental health, people use it as a form of meditation, it’s a great stress reliever, it’s used for physical therapy and it uses both sides of the brain.” And the knitting day and Twisted Threads will also open their arms to those who love crochet. There will also be a trading table at the Worldwide Knitting in Public Day with scarves, beanies, pattern books and balls of yarn all up for sale.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - YUCK!... By ROBBIE TANSEL I think most people would agree that the experience of having children fundamentally changes them as a

person. For many different reasons you are never the same person again. These are the thoughts I’m

thinking as I’m washing out a bucket that Shaquille just vomited in. A couple of minutes ago I was sitting on the couch with Donna as she held the bucket for Shaquille to vomit in and told him what a good job he was doing. Bodily fluids is one key area that is changed by parenthood. Prior to becoming a father I avoided vomit at all cost. As a single person vomit is a real problem. If you happen to be sick and vomit then you’ve got to deal with that all by yourself. Even after you attract a partner, you’re really lucky if you find someone who is prepared to deal with your vomit for you. And rightly so. Dealing with someone else’s vomit is likely to bring about vomit from you, or at least some dry retching. Once you have kids vomit is suddenly not an issue. Pretty quickly

you work out that getting vomited on is part of the deal. Whether you like it or not, you will be covered in puke regularly. Generally it will happen at the most inopportune moments. You’re about to go to work. You’re running late…blahhhh! You’ve just bought a new shirt…blahhh! An annoying relative is visiting…blahhh! That one is actually a little convenient and if you squeeze a baby in just the right place, you can excuse yourself from the room for an hour or two to clean up. It doesn’t matter though. Vomit no longer has any power over you. Pass me a wipe and I’m good to go. It’s not just vomit though. A parent is suddenly immune to all body fluids. I’ve been peed on more times than I can count. And since I became a parent as well. I find it much less objectionable

MORE THAN JUST GOOD SPORTS 16 COMMERCIAL STREET WEST MOUNT GAMBIER

PHONE 08 8725 7582 lifestyle1.net | 28

as a parent. In fact there have been times where I’ve been peed on and laughed. Sure it was that laugh that says, “What else can go wrong?” but a laugh is a laugh. Of all the body fluids poo is presumably the worst, but again, once you’re a parent it holds no power over you. Early on Shaquille pooed liquid. We found out later that dairy didn’t particularly agree with him but during his first few months I got used to hearing a gurgling sound coming from our little bundle of joy followed by a warm feeling passing through my jeans and onto my leg. Nappies were completely powerless against the power of his liquid poo. Within a matter of seconds you were left with a nappy to change, a baby’s jumpsuit to wash, a pair of jeans that needed to be doused in petrol and incinerated and a human who needed the sort of shower you get after exiting a cleanup operation at a nuclear power plant. It’s interesting how the superpower of dealing with your child’s bodily fluids only works with your own child though. You still have no immunity to the power of other children’s bodily fluids. If your best friend’s child pukes, pees or poops, you’re not going near that problem. It’s almost too much to offer them a tissue if they sneeze. Other people’s kids’ bodily fluids are disgusting. I don’t say any of this with pride. It disturbs me how comfortable I am with children’s bodily fluids now. Before I developed immunity I would have run as fast as I could to a shower to clean the offending mess off, regardless of how tiny it was. As a parent of five years, I can quite happily walk around covered in some sort of mess, eat a meal, even go out to the supermarket if I’m not careful. It’s just not an issue any more. Anyway, I can hear him getting ready to vomit, the bucket’s not clean so I’m just going to have to make a cup with my hands to catch it. Email me at robbietansel@gmail. com if you think this story may be useful as a way of convincing teenagers not to have children.

THE ULTIMATE HAND ME DOWN PROGRAM It’s the ultimate hand me down initiative and for the second successive year, Re-Engage Youth Services pastoral care worker Trudi Shelton, is on the hunt for warm winter clothes for families in need. A single mother of four primary school aged children herself, when Trudi took on the pastoral care role last year she became acutely aware of a genuine need. “I quickly became aware and identified a need, for underprivileged children to be provided with sufficient warm winter clothing and footwear,” Trudi said. Having been assisted herself with hand me downs from family members and friends, over the years, it seemed like a logical starting point. “I thought that perhaps I could do the same for some of these children and so, went home and cleaned out my children’s wardrobes,” Trudi said. “I took what clothes, shoes and rain jackets I could find, that my children had grown out of and donated it to the schools.” As happens with so many community assistance programs, the need quickly outweighed the supply, and so Trudi tapped into her own network to add more clothes to the donation pool. “I asked a few of my friends to do the same. And bless their hearts, they were only too happy to help and donated what they could from their children’s wardrobes,” she said. And then came the step that really put the campaign on the map and started to generate some seriously impressive results – social media. “I then had the idea of creating a small facebook group

and added all the mums on my friends list, to ask for their hand me down’ winter clothing, jackets and shoes,” Trudi said. “The response was brilliant and so many people were on board with this campaign, that they began to further support me by adding more and more people to the group. Before I knew it, I had over 1300 members of the community that were now a part of this cause and Mount Gambier Winter Wear for Kids in Need was born.” Aside from having her home as a drop off point, Trudi then enlisted the help of the Mount Gambier City Council to supply a wheelie bin a one of the schools. Also as a drop off point. “So many times, I would arrive home to bags of clothing left on my doorstep,” Trudi said. But she wasn’t done there.“I rang local op shops, Vinnies and the Salvation Army, as a courtesy and out of respect, to let them know what I was doing, in case I was in any way impinging on their services,” Trudi said. “I was delighted to receive both of their blessings to run the campaign.” Once again, the Mount Gambier Winter Wear for Kids in Need campaign has highlighted the generosity of the local community, with donations coming from as far away as Naracoorte, and there is still a couple of weeks to go, so time for you to get involved and make your contribution. The success of the campaign has seen surplus goods donated but that has only meant Trudi could extend her program, which was originally running at the two primary schools where she

LINKING LANDSCAPES FOR CONSERVATION Local landowner Brian Luke has long desired to revegetate part of his Bangham cattle property. Through Natural Resources South East’s Landscape Links project, Mr Luke’s property now boasts a wildlife corridor bridging the gap between Geegeela Conservation Park and private bushland. Natural Resources South East conservation ecologist Cassie Hlava said the reconnection of bushland helps native animals move across the landscape, a crucial element of their protection and conservation. “Wildlife need to move around for all sorts of reasons,” Ms Hlava said. “Finding food, surviving fire and drought, adapting to climate change

and finding new territories to name a few.” Mr Luke agrees. “To restore the pathways of communication through the Australian countryside, well, it must be something good.” The corridor through Mr Luke’s property features a diverse mix of trees, shrubs and understorey plants, creating habitat for woodland birds and other native species. “I think it enhances the property,” Mr Luke said. “It must be better for the animals and birdlife. I have no doubt that they will increase in this area.” The Landscape Links project concludes this June. During its time, it has successfully established corridor sites across 150ha, linking 3000ha of woodland. “Linking these vital patches of habitat wouldn’t have happened without the support of landholders like Brian, who can see how their bit of land fits into a bigger picture of conservation,” Ms Hlava said. The Landscape Links project is supported by Natural Resources South East through funding from the Australian Government. Left - Bangham farmer Brian Luke in his new revegetation corridor.

was employed. “I rang around other local primary schools and services to see if they had a need for children’s winter wear,” Trudi said. “My offer found six other local primary schools and services and one high school requiring warm winter jackets, clothing and shoes for kids in need.” Trudi now supplies eight school sites with the winter clothing donations and in 2017 has a tam of volunteers assisting her with the collection, sorting and distribution.

“An empty shop has been generously provided for storage and sorting and stock piling and seven local businesses have stepped forward, to be drop off locations for winter wear donations,” Trudi said. “I did not ask any of them for this, every single one of these local business owners, heard about this campaign, and one by one approached me to help and support this cause. I am so grateful for their contribution and their amazing support.” The drop

They heard about this campaign and contacted Trudi with an astounding offer, which she was elated to receive. “They donated 94 pairs of brand new children’s DC shoes and many boxes of brand new clothing to be distributed to these many children in need,” she said. “These were divided up across sites and I have had the pleasure in seeing some of the most excited and delighted faces who received these amazing gifts.” Trudi has also been the recipient of cash donations from people wanting to get involved but with no children’s clothes to donate. “This money was spent on a child last year who was in hospital and the family in need and to purchase underwear and clothing across each site.” Underwear and socks are the only items that are required to be brand new for the campaign and if people have the means purchase and donation of these items would be greatly appreciated. “I am so inspired by the response of the community, their kindness, their time and effort that has been put in to generously contributing to this campaign,” Trudi said. “It makes me so proud of my community.” HOW YOU CAN HELP Winter wear in sizes 5 through to sizes 18 adult, boys and girls covering school aged children to teenagers. CASTROL RX SUPER... PROTECTING A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR GENERATIONS J.O. BERKEFELD Mt Gambier, South Australia

Berkefeld’s family business has serviced the Limestone Coast in South Australia for over 80 years. Four generations on, the Berkefelds supply Castrol lubricants to a diverse range of industries and businesses. To become solely a Castrol reseller was an easy decision for the family to make. The high price of equipment and machinery meant their customers wanted the best quality product available to protect their investment.

“ We’ve been selling Castrol RX Super for 35 years. When my customers service their truck or tractor, they can tell the difference when they use Castrol RX Super. Simply, quality is a lot easier to sell. My customers depend on their machinery to support their staff and their families. Castrol RX Super protects their business.” Kym Berkefeld – 3rd generation

For over 35 years Castrol RX Super has been protecting the livelihoods of Australians. Visit castrol.com/RXSuperproof for more Castrol RX Super stories. WHAT’S YOURS? *Engine case study showing evidence of long term performance of Castrol RX Super 15W-40. New engine monitored in single trailer application (max GCM 42T) with 20,000 km service intervals. Following independent engine inspection, no high temperature metal on metal contact was evident. No oil sludge, film or deposit was noted. The engine was finally retired due to fracture of gudgeon pin.

CAMBODIAN TRIP A REAL EYE OPENER Emily Hanel knew when she decided to head to Cambodia in April that it would be an eye opening experience. She was part of a 40 strong team that accompanied Andrew “Cosi” Costello, from the TV show South Aussie With Cosi, to Cambodia as part of the Cows for Cambodia program. The trip started with Emily meeting four orphaned boys and every day she was greeted with happiness, gratitude and poverty like she had never seen before. Emily met the orphans in a tiny village near Siam Reap. “I gave them clothes, frisbees and a ball to play with which they loved,” she said. But it was more than just a mission to drop off gifts, Emily and the other volunteers were there to get involved. From cooking a rice and chicken dish over an open fire for the local school children and staff to teaching a young girl how to write and read her name, Emily was able to immerse herself in the lives of the children and families she was so desperate to help. Puzzles, frisbees, books, stationery and recorders were all handed over to the village’s school. It was then time to roll up her sleeves, spending a few days cutting King grass. “We used old scythes to cut the leaves,” Emily said. “The top half of

the plant was cut off for fodder for the livestock and the bottom half of the plant was separated and replanted to grow more feed.” King grass is a fast growing grass and is an economical form of livestock feed. “In some sections, we were thigh-high in mud so were advised to take off our shoes and socks,” Emily said. Each day of her Cambodian adventure Emily faced a new challenge. “I met a family of three young girls and their mother who lived in a very run-down hut made only from bamboo and palm leaves,” she said. “We built them a new house out of tin and wood, which was up off the ground. The father works away doing construction work but I can just imagine how overjoyed he will be when he sees that he now has a

sturdy house for his family to live in. We also used donated money to purchase them some furniture such as beds and chairs.” And while the trip was mainly about the humanitarian agenda, there was also time for a history lesson and quiet reflection. “We made a very memorable but chilling trip to the Khmer Rouge killing fields, where in the 1970s, a third of Cambodians were killed,” Emily said. “We went through the high school that the Khmer Rouge turned into a prison and torture centre, and saw the many thousands of skulls there in the Memorial Stupa.” Emotions also ran high on ANZAC Day where Emily played The Last Post on her flute. “We all got up before dawn and held a very memorable dawn service,” she said.

“We held the service in front of Angkor Wat, which is the largest temple in the world. It was truly magnificent to have our service with the sun rising on this temple as our backdrop.” Those unique, one in a lifetime experiences, offset the hard work, where in one day, the group delivered eight tonnes of rice, loading the bags onto open air trucks and tractors. There was also a day when they constructed a duck farm out of mesh and bamboo, also buying six ducklings to get things started. “The village children were very excited,” Emily said. The stand out memory of the trip, though, was seeing how people with so little lead such happy lives. “It was amazing to see how these Cambodian villagers lived with so little,” Emily said. “The children had barely any possessions yet were very happy. They were just so appreciative for every little bit of help and any food and gifts they were given. This was a most hardworking but wonderful experience that was made even more special because it was all about helping others that have so little.” Of course, at the centre of the Cows For Cambodia program was Emily raising $2000, thanks to the generosity of the Mount Gambier and wider community, to purchase a cow. “We managed to raise over the requisite $2000 that bought a cow and other necessary basic living items,” Emily said. “The poverty cycle will now be broken for that family, as well as all the others who benefit from the calves in future years.” Above - Emily Hanel with some of the children she met on her Cows For Cambodia trip in April. GENEROUS GRANT BOOSTS CHILDREN’S FITNESS Students from Portland Primary School will be able to increase their activity levels thanks to a grant from United Way Glenelg. The grant was used to purchase equipment which will help promote exercise and encourage the students and their families to develop a healthy and active lifestyle. Portland Primary school has initiated new programs to help the students make healthy lifestyle choices involving exercise and diet and over the past 12 months the school has focused on healthy lunch boxes, healthy lunch days catered by the students and healthy cooking classes for students and families. Portland Primary School principal Stephanie Carter said she believed that in general most people are not moving enough. “It is important we educate our students on the importance of exercise and the correct way to use equipment.,” she said. “We also encourage our students to walk

or ride to school and the fitness track is a natural extension of this activity especially in the summer, spring and autumn. We hope by upgrading

our facilities we are highlighting the importance of exercise and this will contribute to tackling the high incidence of obesity in our region.” lifestyle1.net | 32

Due to its central location, the school encourages sporting clubs to train on the grounds and local residents to play basketball, use their playgrounds and run or walk through grounds as part of larger loops of the town. United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Angelino was pleased to see the school encourage their students to exercise. “Exercise can be transformational, improving not only the children’s fitness, but also their concentration levels, mood, behaviour, and general wellbeing in the classroom,” she said. “We applaud Portland Primary School for their holistic approach to healthy living.” This grant was made possible through United Way Glenelg’s Workplace Giving Program. If you’re interested in starting a workplace giving program in your workplace please contact Nicole Angelino on 0410 513305 mail@unitedwayglenelg.com.au

Melbourne’s famous Shirazz Jazz Band returns for the second year to Coonawarra on Saturday, July 8, when they help kick-off the month long Cellar Dwellers celebrations. This vibrant band of talented musicians play some of the hottest traditional jazz around, and are excited to return to Coonawarra after a very well received visit last year. Shirazz has plenty of touring experience, having performed all over the eastern states, as well as throughout Victoria. “We love being on the road, it’s great to go to new places and meet new people, and we’ve had some really great tour experiences,â€? said Matt Dixon, leader and trombonist/vocalist in Shirazz. Since 2010, Shirazz has been wowing audiences with their exciting and approachable take on traditional jazz music. “Jazz fans love that we’re keeping the style alive, as many traditional musicians are nearing retirement,â€? said Matt, “But even non-jazz fans find the music accessible and fun ‌ and I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had people tell us that they didn’t think they liked jazz, but they loved whatever it is that we do.â€? Shirazz’s lively and rambunctious show at Rymill Hall, Penola, will take in traditional New Orleans material, mixing in reimagined pop hits and their own cheeky originals to deliver their famous infectious live sound.

It has been all about hard work for softballing sisters Amber and Georgia Hood and the reward came – Australian national team selection for the Under 19 World Championships in Florida next month. .” The journey to Florida started at the 2016 national championships when the girls were selected in a 30 player development squad that went on to compete at the 2016 International Friendship Series in Blacktown. Their efforts at that event, combined with continued good form at the 2017 19 & Under national championships then secured their spot in the final line-up for the world championships. The years of extra training, under the tutelage of mother Tanya Hood, and the seemingly endless trips to Adelaide for training and games and trips all around Australia for national and State tournaments finally bore fruit when both girls received the call confirming their selection. “It shows if you do the work, you can achieve your goals,” Amber said. “Mum’s trained us so hard forever and we got told we wouldn’t make it by a few people but we have done it.” It is believed they are the first sisters to make a national softball team in a dream that has been a family affair. Making the Australian team as regionally based players is also a coup – Georgia is the only regionally based player headed to the world championships, aside from a Rockhampton based player. “Having mum to know how we should train and the work we needed to do, really helped,” Georgia said. “We have been able to stay in Mount Gambier and still do the right training and get our game to the level it needed to be.” Of course, that only saw the need for hard work to increase as both girls continued to develop their core strength, fitness and general softball skills, as well as Amber working on her specialty catcher skills through reflex and other drills, and Georgia, pitching and pitching and pitching. And now there is another bit of hard work to be done – fundraising to help finance the international experience. It all starts with a Happy Hour on June 23 at the South Aussie Hotel. The $20 a head show includes drinks at happy hour prices, free supper, three amazing auction items and a chance to win cash with a last number standing raffle. Tickets are available through Active8 Health & Sports so drop in or call (08)8723 0288 for more details. Above - National team mates & sisters Amber & Georgia Hood.
