ANOTHER COUP FOR BORDERTOWN GALLERY On the back of last year’s hugely successful Ben Quilty exhibition, Bordertown’s Walkway Gallery has secured another coup – an exhibition of works by another of Australia’s celebrated artists, Del Kathryn Barton. And this time Walkway Gallery manager Naomi Fallon has upped the ante. Ben Quilty was a one-time Archibald winner, Del Kathryn Barton has claimed the honour twice. Best known for her dreamy, poetic portraits, Del Kathryn Barton is recognised as one of Australia’s foremost figurative painters. “It (the Del Kathryn Barton exhibition) is a continuation from the Ben Quilty success,” Naomi said. “We now have a strong relationship with the Art Gallery of South Australia and we are pretty keen to continue that relationship.” Naomi met with gallery director Nick Mitzevich armed with a wish list of artists. “We talked about the benefits and logistics of each artist and came up with Del Kathryn Barton,” she said. And the exhibition will not just take up the Walkway Gallery space. Del

AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY BMX CHAMPIONSHIPS & SA V VICTORIA BMX CHAMPIONSHIPS accessible in their own right with very different painting styles.” Originally, Naomi wasn’t going to have another major drawcard so soon in the gallery but now she has this exhibition and two more next year to be announced as part of the 2017 season. Visitors will be able to experience first-hand the work of Del Kathryn Barton at the Walkway Gallery from September 1 to October 2 this year. Admission is free. The opening event and public program will be announced in the following months. “It’s been a big 18 months,” Naomi said. “And it’s all because Ben Quilty was such a raging success. They (Art Gallery of SA) took a risk on us and were impressed with how well it went and now they are happy to do it again. This exhibition is exclusive to Bordertown.

Kathryn Barton has transitioned into film making as well so the civic centre theatre will also come into play. “We are taking over the whole space,” Naomi said. The exhibition will explore Barton’s transition into film making showcasing three major works from the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia, including the gallery’s recent acquisition RED, a short film recently premiered at the 2017 Adelaide Festival. “I saw RED in the art gallery at the festival – it’s a bold film,” Naomi said. “It is pretty intense but very, very cool.” RED, starring Cate Blanchett, with Australian actor Alex Russell and Sydney Dance Company’s Charmene Yap, is a tale driven by the mating rituals of the Australian Red Back Spider. Also travelling to Bordertown will be a large painting for the feeling (2011) and animated work The Nightingale and the Rose (2015) with filmmaker Brendan Fletcher, which won Best Australian Short Film at the 2015 Melbourne International Film Festival and the 2016 AACTA award for Best Short Animation. Naomi is hopeful the Del Kathryn Barton exhibition will attract a different demographic to the Quilty event. “Particularly her painting work is intricate work and should attract a younger female demographic, whereas Ben’s (Quilty) was very masculine,” she said. “They are both very

Mount Gambier is just wild about Harry – Harry Kewell that is. The star Australian soccer icon was in the region on Friday and Saturday working with high performance students, all abilities players and just anyone who wanted to have a go at soccer under the watchful eye of Harry and his team of coaches from the Harry Kewell Academy. The visit was organised by Tenison Woods College and it will come as no surprise to anyone who knows him, that Scott Dickson was at the centre of the event. The soccer tragic is always looking for ways to improve soccer in the region and his admiration of the former Socceroo is palpable. Constant contact with the academy eventually saw Mount Gambier offered the opportunity to tap into Harry’s expertise. “We have always stayed in close contact with the academy and when Harry was going to be in Australia and available for sessions they contacted us,” Dickson said. And the two day visit was an overwhelming success. It started on Friday when Harry worked with around 30 Tenison Woods College students – the 11 secondary soccer players in the High Performance

PHOTOS COURTESY OF DARREN ARCHIBALD Program and the 22 players in the Ignite Program – a pre-cursor for years4-7 who aspire to joining the High Performance Program in secondary school. “He broke down the process of playing,” Dickson said of the Friday session. “Harry (Kewell) believed soccer is a very, very basic game and it has been made more complicated than it needs to be. He told the kids how important it is to work on the basics.” It saw the group work on striking the ball, shooting for goal and a lot of one on one drills. Saturday morning at Frew Park was a sold out 100 player session where Harry and his coaches worked with kids aged 6-16. “He definitely brings something special – he didn’t say no to anyone,” Dickson said. “He was

really impressed with the standard of our kids too and would love to come back or at least bring the academy back to work with them again.” And he also brought honesty. After spending the morning at the coaching masterclass and posing for many photos and signing autographs, Harry then worked with the entire High Performance Program, across all sports, sharing his philosophy about achieving success, focussing on ambition. Ït was pretty full one – he certainly didn’t give any politically correct answers to the kids questions ” Dickson said. And then there was his special visit to a student who had been in hospital and couldn’t attend the sessions. “He went to his house to see him – he was just so happy to give of his time.” The trip was part of a regional visit that included Colac, Warrnambool and Shepparton.

UNIQUE HOBBY ON SHOW

The South East Radio Group is inviting any interested community members to a free come and try event where there could be fox hunting on the agenda event on Saturday, June 10. For the uninitiated, it doesn’t require a gun and no animals will be harmed.

Fox hunting, as it is known colloquially, is transmitter hunting – a unique hobby favoured by amateur radio enthusiasts. And that will be something the experienced enthusiasts spend the weekend getting involved, in the come and try event is about showing just what’s involved in the amateur radio scene. “There will be radio operators available to demonstrate various aspects of this hobby whether contacting people locally or all over the world,” club member Andrew Smelt said. Kingston enthusiast Tony Hutchison is a case in point, having spoken to astronauts thanks to his amateur radio hobby. The free event will be held outside the Scout Hall in Margaret Street Mount Gambier and registration is no required but appreciated. Registration and further information can be obtained by emailing vk5sr@wiz.org.au or head to the website www.serg.mountgambier. org The come and try event is part of the 53rd annual convention and Australian Fox Hunting Championships. FIVE YEAR WAIT IS FINALLY OVER Portland Bay School’s five-year-long campaign for a new campus became a reality late last week with the sod turn on its new multi-million dollar campus in Henty Street. Education Minister the Hon James Merlino joined Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank and the school community to declare the start of works on the $7 million building which will be constructed on vacant land adjoining the Portland Primary School. The current Portland Bay campus in Edgar Street is Victoria’s smallest school on just 0.23 hectares, slightly larger

than neighbouring residential blocks, with students forced to have split lunch breaks because of the limited outdoor play space. Over recent years the school community had dealt with a number of safety issues at the campus, including roof leaks and electrical faults, forcing WorkSafe to shut the site in mid-2015 for urgent repairs. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the funding success was testament to the tireless campaign efforts of the school council, who had attracted more than 2000 local

supporters in its petition efforts. “Today marks the start of a brighter future for the Portland Bay School,” Cr Rank said at the the sod turning. “Council has been pleased to work with the State Government to make this critical investment a reality, helping to complete planning for the site for these much anticipated works. “This new campus will provide a purpose built learning facility for the school’s growing population, which now tops more than 50 students, who have a variety of needs. “The days of students squeezing into a tiny play space, smaller then a tennis court, are over. This site provides plenty of space for kicking the footy, running around and having fun for the best learning and social outcomes. “This state of the art facility will also provide the latest technology which will enhance students skills and learning opportunities as we progress into the new digital age.” Left - Glenelg Shire Council CEO Greg Burgoyne, Portland Bay School Principal Steve Crossley, Portland Bay School Council President Deb Robinson, Education Minister the Hon James Merlino and Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank at the Portland Bay School campus unveiling.

It was back to nature last month for almost 200 South East primary school students. The kids braved the cold for an engaging trek around Canunda National Park at this year’s March in May event. Natural Resources South East again partnered with Friends of Canunda and Beachport Friends of Parks volunteers to run the popular event which connects students with nature in their local area. Embracing the wet and wintry conditions, students completed the 8.5km Coola Outstation historical walk,

taking a breath at education stations along the way to learn interesting facts about fire ecology and birdlife, feathers, fur and food chains, Indigenous culture, and pioneer history. Mount Burr Primary School teacher Lisa Scott said each year March in May was an engaging and educational day out for her students. “My students loved the opportunity to learn in the field and demonstrate links between what is learnt in the classroom to future jobs and our role in looking after local ecosystems,” Ms Scott said. “It was a great taste of what the natural resources management provides, and helped students develop new ideas to investigate.” South East Natural Resources Management (SE NRM) Board Member, and Friends of Canunda and Beachport Parks President Michael Bleby provided students with an enlightening history of pioneer life at Coola Station, which is now part of Canunda National Park. “The day introduces the students to the park by combining outdoor education in the natural environment with fitness activity,” Mr Bleby said. “The early showers on the day didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the students who learnt much about the local environment and the early history of the area.” Since 2003, March in May has been an integral part of study for senior primary school students. YOUTH WORKER SNARES NATIONAL HONOUR Hayley Rowe has made a career out of making a difference in the lives of young people and last month, her efforts were rewarded when she took

out the Local Government Professionals (LGPro) Australia 2017 Emerging Leader of the Year Award, at the LGPro National Congress and Business Expo, in Hobart.

It was an early birthday present for the Glenelg Shire youth development officer, who also made a successful presentation at the expo alongside fellow nominee Stephanie Coughlin, from South Australia. Hayley has been in the Glenelg Shire role for four years and she has slowly brought youth issues into sharp focus for the council and, in turn, the community. The national honour came after she secured the State award in March. She has worked across a number of sectors before securing the Glenelg Shire role but all have seen her working alongside young people - a double degree in Health and Social Science setting her up for her diverse roles. “My original plan was to be a psychologist,” Hayley said. “I started working in child protection at what was then Families SA and working with young people under the guardianship of the Minister. I was working at the high needs end.” The role did feel limited, though, and Hayley started to explore other options. “I guess I sort of realised that being a psychologist was working with one person at a time and I thought I would be better off focussing on a more community approach,” she said. “I wanted to look at what determinants were leading to issues for young people.” That saw her take a position as a youth health worker with the Portland District Health Service. “I was a counsellor. I mainly focussed on youth homelessness, resilience, self esteem and leadership.” But Hayley’s vision was even bigger and that’s when local government loomed as a way of broadening her impact. “Local government was certainly going to give me experience in a political arena,” Hayley said. “In my role as health worker I was at the pointy end but the council youth development role provided a whole of youth in the community approach.” Expanding and developing youth programs and services took its time but Hayley believes once the councillors were on board, the realisation that developing our young people was vital to the community going forward, started to trickle through. She hopes the national award for her work in the youth sector will only strengthen the lifestyle1.net | 08

council’s and community’s resolve to continue making young people a focus. “It was an honour to simply be nominated for the award, but it was such a wonderful surprise to be announced as the 2017 Emerging Leader of the Year,” she said. “I have been so fortunate that in my position at the Glenelg Shire I have been afforded the opportunities to advocate on behalf of young people and create programs that empower and support local youth. I hope that my win can help to ensure that the youth sector continues to receive further support. All young people should have the chance to contribute their ideas, particularly those who often face challenges in being heard or advocating for themselves.” During Hayley’s time with Glenelg Shire Council, she has developed and nurtured many youth programs, including the 12:25 Youth Cafe, a local youth summit, and Skittles, a social support group for same-sex attracted and gender diverse young people. She also designed and ran an extensive, shire-wide youth engagement project called Voices and Choices, which surveyed young people about topics including wellbeing, civic engagement, their view of council, and the activities they would like youth services to support. “Young people are not leaders of the future, they are leaders now,” Hayley said. TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS

Chicken Piccata 1/4 cup plain flour 4 small chicken breast fillets 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 40g butter 2 eschalots, thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tspn fresh lemon thyme leaves 1 cup salt-reduced chicken stock

1/4 cup lemon juice 300ml tub light thickened cream 1 small lemon, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons drained baby capers 1 tablespoon fresh flat-leaf parsley Mashed potato, to serve 200g steamed green beans, to serve

Method Place flour in a large snap-lock bag. Season with salt and pepper. Place chicken in snap-lock bag. Seal bag. Shake to coat chicken in flour. Heat 1/2 the oil and 1/2 the butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add chicken to pan, shaking off excess flour. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes each side or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Add remaining oil and remaining butter to frying pan. Add eschalot, garlic and thyme. Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes or until eschalot has softened. Add chicken stock, lemon juice and cream to pan. Season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Bring to a simmer. Return chicken to pan. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 to 12 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and sauce has slightly thickened. Add lemon slices to pan. Remove from heat. Sprinkle with capers, parsley and extra thyme. Serve with mashed potato and steamed green beans.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - CALLING ALL SUPERHEROES... By ROBBIE TANSEL I’m feeling a bit down at the moment. It doesn’t seem like you can turn on the television without watching something depressing (I’m not just talking about the reality shows). The newspaper is full of bad news. It just feels like a lot of bad things are happening at the moment and that the world is full of rottenness and evil. Sorry to bring you down. I come with a solution today though. We in Mount Gambier need a superhero. I’m probably a little disappointed that the city council hadn’t thought about this already but I guess the mayor has been a little bit busy with his winery and his new baby. Mind you, it’s possible that council had thought of this but have struggled to find a superhero. Chances are we’re not in a position to attract any of the big names. Batman is unlikely to uproot from Gotham City. Superman is a loyal sort of bloke so he’s not going to leave Metropolis. Aside from all that, if Batman and Bruce Wayne or Superman and Clark Kent both moved to Mount Gambier, people are probably going to put two and two together and realise that they’re one and the same. Anyway, with the right advertising I think we can attract a superhero who will be able to sort things out a bit in our part of the world. Mr Lee, please find attached a job advertisement you can send into Lifestyle1.

City of Mount Gambier Position Vacancy : Superhero. • The City of Mount Gambier is seeking a suitably qualified individual with superpowers or appropriate gadgets providing superhero-like powers to fill a vacancy in their newly formed crime fighting department. • The City of Mount Gambier has a population of approximately 25, 000 citizens, 20, 000 of whom appear to do dumb stuff. • The position is on a full time needs basis. The successful applicant will be expected to appear on demand whenever criminal situations arise. Some consideration may be given to having a phone provided with a hotline, possibly in a colour that will identify it. “Call SuperPower person on the purple phone!” Other options being considered include some sort of spotlight with an appropriate logo projected into the sky. • Remuneration will be negotiated according to the applicants superpowers and relevant experience. Preference will be given

to superheroes who have a secret identity involving being an orphaned millionaire or another profession they can use to supplement their wages. If you happen to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, payment in pizza can be arranged. • The role may suit an experienced sidekick looking to become the top banana or a supervillain interested in turning good. • Must provide own mask. • The City of Mount Gambier is an equal opportunity employer. Female superheroes are encouraged to apply, especially since I would much prefer to see them in tight lycra rather than some dude with his undies on the outside and bulges all over the place. • Please supply an application responding to the key competencies, a video of relevant clashes with evil villains and a video package highlighting applicant’s superpowers. All queries and applications can be addressed to me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR FRIENDSHIP AND FUN There are a lot of clubs in Mount Gambier – sporting clubs, service clubs, art collectives, car clubs, the list is endless. But there is only one club like the Blue Lake Probus Club. It is the only mixed gender Probus club in the city and Probus is the fun club – the club that is all about socialising. The Blue Lake club was established in 1984, eight years after Probus was first established in Australia, and is an organisation initially sponsored by Rotary. Neil Richardson has been secretary of the Blue Lake Probus Club for 21 years and he remembers the halcyon days when the club boasted 60 members. Its current membership is around 30 and like all clubs across the region, they are looking to attract new members and younger members. Probus is an association of retired and semi-retired people with the aim of providing regular opportunities for them to keep their minds active, expand their interests, and try to enjoy the fellowship of new friends. “I think things really changed around 10 years ago when the retirement villages started to pop up and people, who would normally have sought lifestyle1.net | 26

out Probus, now get all those activities without leaving their retirement village,” Neil said. Blue Lake Probus Club is one of four in Mount Gambier and meets on the third Tuesday of every month, from 10am to 12noon at the East Gambier Football Club. Janet Forster, who is in charge of organising the guest speakers for the monthly meetings, said the value of the mixed gender group was husbands and wives could attend together, although the group does have a number of single members, as well. Probus clubs are informal and the meetings are more about catching up and listening to a guest speaker than agendas and minutes. “Most of our members wouldn’t miss a meeting or an outing for quids,” Janet said. “It’s permanently in their diary.” And sometimes those meetings hit the road, like an upcoming event in the works that will see the group head to Port MacDonnell to visit The Customs House and a museum. Morning Melodies, a Country Arts SA live entertainment program at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, is also a popular outing

organised by the club. “We recently went to Bedford Industries to see what they do and that was really interesting, too,” Janet said. From community leaders, including Grant King and Rory McEwen, to a representative from Australian Hearing, from entertaining educator Sarah Mott to Lifeline’s Eve Barrett, the range of guest speakers is wide and varied. Kathy Hearne is the president of the Blue Lake Probus Club and anyone wanting more information can either attend a meeting or contact Neil on (08)8725 1362. “Everyone is welcome to come along and we really hope to see some new faces,’ Neil said. “It really is just a chance to get together and make new friends and just get out and do something new.”

ADVERTORIAL - TREEMENDOUS TREES The majesty and splendor of trees is without doubt one of the most truly outstanding parts of nature and life would be pretty strange without them. Whether it’s ornamental trees for visuals, fruit trees for food or shelter trees all play such an important role. I recall moving to boarding college in my young teens and marveling at the trees around my college campus. Having come from the most northerly town on mainland Great Britain, the wind and salt laden air reduced us to Sycamore Trees (Acer pseudoplatanus), Rowans, Larch and pine forests - ironic that I should end up in Mount Gambier surrounded by pines of a different kind. I also recall filling my book list when I went on to university and having to purchase Hillier’s Guide to Trees and Shrubs, an amazing publication by the famous tree growers themselves and lapping up the contents with great glee and discovering a whole new world of trees in the arboretum surrounding the uni campus. Whilst back then deciduous trees were ground grown too, like today, and this allows us to offer bare rooted trees in winter. At present we, at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, are digging our new stocks of trees and fruit trees from the paddocks. By the time this goes to print we will have dug and processed the first few thousand trees and roses for season 2017 with thousands more to pick and pack for interstate and internet orders over the coming months.

Sadly, as nurseries have diminished across the region and across Australia we remain one of the few “proper” nurseries remaining. Here at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees we cater for orders large and small for the domestic home gardener, farm trees, and so on in addition to supplying most local authorities around the region. If you have roses or trees ordered with us and have not heard from us this means your order is not yet ready for collection. Do not panic if you have not heard from us as it takes many weeks/ months to compile all of the orders, with many cases just waiting for that last elusive one to come in to complete the order. Hundreds of standard roses have been dug a little earlier than normal due to the dry conditions which has helped no end getting the roses dug this year from the fields, so if you haven’t yet thought about these to order, you can just call in and most will be available, bearing in mind that we are heavily booked up with orders for this season, so get in quick if you haven’t yet ordered. Limestone Coast Roses is the lowest price mail order rose grower and supplier in Australia with standard roses from just $23.95 another reason to get in quickly as most of our roses go to Internet and mail order in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria with may local people missing out which is ironic when they are grown right here with paddock direct prices. We also have an early bird special on.

A small amount of stock is still to come in from suppliers of varieties that we do not grow ourselves. Many of the eagerly awaited 2017 new releases, including the Always Remember the Leukaemia Foundation Rose to generate funds for research in to this vital disease. Mandalay rose has stunning black buds opening to a highly perfumed rich, black red rose and has been by far our most popular of the 2017 new releases and close to being sold out. Afterall who doesn’t like a good red rose with immense disease resistance and high perfume? Butterfly Kisses is another fundraising variety for Variety The Children’s Charity and has soft, delicate blooms, and as I write this we still have few of the Raspberry Tiger rose available in rich raspberry red with white stripes and splashes, also this is one of the thornless roses too, so no ouch when picking this one. See www.limestonecoastroses.com.au for the full range of 2017 roses plus all the other varieties we grow and stock and make sure to get your orders in by Sunday . As with all our roses we can mail these to relatives and friends across Australia for you. Smiling Eyes and the Drift series of groundcover roses have been two of our top selling varieties so far for season 2017, and we have grafted standard roses of the most of the Drift Series which flower for nine months of the year, so another to consider for long term flowering display in your garden. (see advert facing page). This season sees the release two new

fruit trees,an apple and a Peach mainly in the dwarf varieties that have become so sought after. With gardens decreasing in size, the fact that dwarf trees bare as much if not more than their full sized counterparts and their use in pots and planters means now there is literally no variety that isn’t available in dwarf. All of the details for all of the above are on our comprehensive website www.gardenarium.com.au and go into the fruit tree section and we have current catalogues in store to help with your choosing. Most of our other fruit trees are also in store now with an Orchard Starter fruit tree pack of any four fruit trees for $99, so a great economical way to kick off your planting or top up with some fresh new trees. Early bird specials are running now on a huge range of trees and also early orders of ornamental trees will be given and upgrade to a larger sized tree. These include the ever popular Silver Birch, also advanced Weeping Cherries at only $79.95 are a steal. The boss has gone mad and put huge reductions on ornamental pears in several varieties, (be quick as there is a national shortage) plane trees, golden and claret ash, plus a few others, so order now or come in to grab these great bargains.

(See advert facing page). Early bird specials run until June 18, unless sold out prior. There are a few new release ornamental trees for 2017 and the standout would have to be the new dwarf ornamental pear we have been trialling for a few years now and great for those who like all the attributes of the ornamental pear family but find all the others grow too big. The New Oak Crimson Spire, ideal for narrow areas, along fence lines in narrow situations in town and for screenings has also been popular and is exclusive to Limestone Coast Advanced Trees this winter.and finally Early Fall Oak is a new grafted form of Pin Oak that drops its leaves fully, so no unsightly brown leaves hanging on the tree all winter. If you haven’t got your head around your bare root requirements for this winter season, now is the time as they are here. Open all long weekend, including Monday, 10am-4pm. By Calum Haygarth

VARIETY CLUB WAS THE WINNER FROM LAKE BONNEY SHOOT Lake Bonney Sporting Clays members and supporters managed to raise more than $3500 for Variety Children’s Charity Bash Car 041 last month at the Goodnwindi Charolias 50 Target shoot. The total figure was a combination of a portion of the nominations taken on the day, a donation from Steve, Barb, Danny and Tash Bellinger and the takings from a very successful auction and BBQ tea held after the event. Variety Club officials have informed the committee that this money could provide two iPads to assist children, who are living with autism, to communicate. Variety Bash entrant Ian Lister was overwhelmed with the support shown, thanking everyone for their generosity when he was presented with cheques from club president Herb Whitehead and sponsor Steve Bellinger. The weekend began on Saturday with the annual Side By Side 75 Target shoot. sponsored by the Fabris and Leopold Families. Mount Gambier’s Gavin Dyson took home High Gun from 55 shooters with a score of 72/75. Course setter Mark Fabris utilised the clubs cherry pickers and towers to challenge shooters with some high crossing birds. Super Vet shooter Kevin Dyson completed a perfect round shooting 25/25 finishing the day two targets behind son Gavin and 12 targets ahead of second and third placegetters, Toby Edwards and Ray Gould. Danny Bellinger was also presented with a 25 badge for his perfect round, ensuring he

finished first in AA, from Jeremy Kent and Rohan Parker. Regular visitor John Van Dooren won A, ahead of Andrew Hoare and Allan Cowin. Clunes member Eric Jones took home first in B grade, followed by Stan Cations and Peter Cook. Dale Fabris was first in C grade, Darren Beyer, second, and Norm Smith finished third, with a 1904 Boswell side by side. Vets was won convincingly by club member Wayne Gurney, second went to Wally Wombwell, with Chris VonStanke Sr in third place. Tash Bellinger and Janette Densley represented the ladies on the day and Ethan Hellyer in sub juniors. The club’s inaugural charity shoot was well supported by 68 shooters, with sponsors, the Bellinger Family of Goodnwindi Charolias, making some changes to the course to keep shooters on their toes. Sunday was also the first leg of the interclub challenge with the South East Branch – Burrungule. The final tally on the day saw Lake Bonney down by two targets. Jeremy Kent claimed another high gun prize shooting 47/50. Mates Joe Densley and Danny Bellinger went against each other in a shoot off to decide first and second in AA, with Mark Fabris coming third. Kingston shooters Andrew Green, who finished first, and Leigh Peterson, second, in the A grade, shot the same scores as the AA grade winners, while Burrungule’s Craig Hill was third. B grade winners were Ian Chapman, Steve

Bellinger and Glenn Crowe-Owen. Charles Wallis finished a convincing first in C grade, while Darren Beyer had a consistent weekend taking home another second prize, while Mick Edwards came third. The Veterans leader board was turned around from Saturday with Bob Jones first, Chris VonStanke, second, and Wayne Gurney, third. Super vets was another tight competition with only one target between the three shooters and second and third place decided by a coin toss. Toby Edwards won from Ernie Allen and Frank Kentish.

lifestyle1.net | 28

Tash Bellinger had a good second round to end up with first while Vicki Fabris and Janette Densely came second and third. Mason Patzel shot well in juniors and Ethan Hellyer and Shak VonStanke were the sub junior competitors. Above - Tash Bellinger, Herb Whitehead, Barb Bellinger, Steve Bellinger, Ian Lister and Danny Bellinger as the Lake Bonney Sporting Clays hand over their fundriaising cheque to Ian Lister and the Variety Club.

MOUNT GAMBIER YOUTH RECEIVE NEW HEADSPACE CENTRE

Uniting Communities, lead agency of headspace Mount Gambier, has worked long and close, with the commitment and support of many local community services and agencies, local and federal members, Country PHN, headspace National Office and young people, to deliver a welcome holistic youth health and wellbeing service to the area. Mount Gambier youth aged between 12 and 25 are now able to access services

from the new headspace premises at 171 Commercial Street East. headspace youth volunteers helped design the site to be warm and youth friendly, including displaying youth artwork from a headspace art competition. Centre Manager Tasja Barelds, the staff and volunteers at headspace have worked hard to create a welcoming and safe environment for young people in the

region. headspace Mount Gambier opened its doors from a temporary location in March 2016. Since then, more than 300 young people have benefitted from the service. Celebrating the new youth facility headspace Mount Gambier has a well-established group of youth volunteers who, along with headspace staff, are planning a launch event open to the community. On Thursday, July 6, from 11.30am to 2.30pm, the community is invited to a free event to launch the headspace Mount Gambier permanent site. The event will include an official launch, free food, performances from local young people, activities and centre tours. IMOGEN’S STORY A local 14-year-old, Imogen*, talks about how headspace helped her. “I was being bullied at school quite a lot,” says Imogen. It was a tough time for Imogen and she wasn’t sure who to turn to. “My mum did some research and found out there was a new place opening in Mount Gambier called headspace so she

sent them an email.” Imogen started weekly visits with a youth worker. “Each week we would work on something, I would cut pictures out of magazines that represented things I enjoyed, we used cards to describe my feelings, we also practiced mindfulness exercises. I would get ideas on how to deal with the bullying, they helped me work out

responses that were respectful, but also made sure the person knows that they need to stop. We also worked on my fears. Over time I made a big improvement and I’m so grateful for how headspace helped me”, says Imogen. New Zealand road champion Joseph Cooper was the winner of the 81st 100 Mile Classic Road Race, sponsored by Squashbrook Fitness & Leisure, at the end of last month. Cooper outlasted a field of 77 riders, riding from scratch in a race where the weather provided a huge challenge. In fact, it could be argued the scratch riders were aided by a strong head wind for the final, Port MacDonnell to Mount Gambier, leg, which allowed them, as the field’s strongest riders, to reel in the remainder of the field. As is so often the case in this time honoured race, Cooper made his break at the Bellum Hotel and in the end he cruised to a 41 second victory. He also competed the gruelling course in the fastest time – 3 hours 42 minutes and 59 seconds. Rising Mount Gambier talent Jack Patzel was the best of the locals finishing eighth – a stellar effort in the trying conditions by a young cyclist. The next local to cross the finish line was Paul Brooker in 15th and while not locally based, it was Curtis Dowdell and Ralph Dowdell, finishing 16th and 17th respectively – the duo is the son and grandson of form Mount Gambier rider Noel Dowdell. Tim Koopman (19th); Robert Mann (23rd); Daniel Herrewyn (32nd); Luke Wight (40th) and Spek Peake (43rd) rounded out the host club’s efforts, while 19 riders failed to finish and three did not even hit the start line. Herrewyn’s ride was impressive, riding from scratch and completing the course in 3 hours and 53 minutes. DEMONS RETAIN BRUCE LIGHTBODY SHIELD

EAGLES STARTING TO SOAR Hatherleigh 12.11 (83) d Kalangadoo 6.5 (41) To this point in 2017, especially on the back of two huge wins over lone time rival Port MacDonnell and previously undefeated Kongorong, it looked like no one was quite in Kalangadoo’s class – enter Hatherleigh. The Eagles were missing key personnel early but had been building nicely for this round nine clash and they basically beat the Pies at their own game a flying start and relentless pressure. Öbviously they have been the benchmark so we were pretty pleased we put together a four quarter effort,” Hatherleigh coach Jason Faulkner said. The Eagles built a 28 point quarter time lead and were able to build on that and stifle the normally high scoring Magpies. Öur defence was terrific,” Faulkner said. Änd the midfield worked really hard to not allow any easy entries.” Gerard McGrath led that backline at centre half forward in a masterful display of intercept marking, while Jack Sullivan and Joe Rayson continued their stellar form of the past month as Sam Waring continues to grow into his ruck role. Chris Mules and Matt Fatchen earned the praise of the Eagles coach, while Nathan Reeves played somewhat of a lone hand up forward. “We’ve got a tough month now with Port MacDonnell and Kongorong and we want to try and get some more wins on the board because getting those wins at the end of the season can be tough,” Faulkner said.

MOSSIES PUNISH SAINTS Mt Burr 46.30 (306) d Nangwarry 1.1 (7) Nangwarry continues to conceded 300-plus points and this weekend it was Mt Burr enjoying the spoils as the Mossies secured a 299 point victory. Fifteen players hit the scoreboard for Mt Burr with Jack Gregory bagging 10, while coach Tom Renzi led the way in the rout with a best on ground performance. Andrew Russell, Ben Dinnison and Arron Heron continue to be the most influential Saints, while Joel Virtanen was again the only player to hit the scoreboard for Nangwarry.

MURPHIES HANG ON IN NAILBITER Glencoe 15.12 (102) d Tananoola 15.10 (100) A six goal haul from Bradley Mitchell has helped Glencoe just sneak over the line in a nailbiter with Tananoola. After a stirring win in round eight, the Murphies looked to have found some consistency and were favoured to take the points over a rebuilding Tigers but the clash was basically an arm wrestle before Glencoe was able to secure a 24 point three quarter time buffer. The Tigers, led by Tom Holmes, Ben Chant and Brayden Lane, who also bagged six majors, fought back hard in the last though and in the end some defensive efforts from Dane Paproth and Adam Price could well have been the difference with the final margin only two points in favour of Glencoe. Port MacDonnell 20.14 (134) d Kongorong 9.10 (64) It was the battle for the Bruce Lightbody Memorial Shield at the weekend at Kongorong – a piece of silverware the Hawks had not laid their hands on in some time. But this was a different Kongorong – this was a Kongorong sitting second on the ladder – a heavy loss to top ranked Kalangadoo the only blemish in 2017. Port MacDonnell also entered the clash on the back of the bye and before that a demoralising loss to the Pies but with some players back into the line-up and a sense of pride in their record in the annual shield battle with their fierce rival, the Demons came out firing and never allowed the Hawks to challenge. “We had seven blokes come into our side for the match,” Port MacDonnell coach Ben McGregor said. “We brought in a lot of all guys and we thought that would stretch them.” And stretch them it, a six goal to none opening quarter setting up the 70 point victory as key talls Jake Turner and Tim Sullivan had a day out, stamping their authority early in the clash. “Jake (Turner)k kicked three in the first quarter and Tim (Sullivan) took some big marks at centre half forward,” McGregor said. “We were very clean with the ball and Jake (Turner) and Tim (Sullivan) made the most of every opportunity.” Missing key onballers Zack Williams and Mark Smith was always going to test the Demons’ depth “But we were able to cover that and won some really good contested ball,” McGregor said. Plenty of contribution from the half back line as well with Jacob Simmonds showing plenty and Jacob Langdon not losing a one on one contest. The return after a month off of Matt Roscow to the midfield was also telling. Ït was a pretty good effort across the board,” McGregor said. “We had no passengers and that’s what you need in the big games.” McGregor said the Demons were wary of the Hawks, who had been following them in the draw and consistently beating sides by much more convincing margins than his boys. “They seemed a step ahead of us in that regard.” Matt Cordy won plenty of possession while Bronson Saffin was still damaging and Harry Evans battled hard all day for the home side. The Western Border Netball Association has started its 2017 representative season in style with success at the weekend’s Western Zone Championship as part of the Victorian Association Championships. The 17 & Under team overcame limited use of star shooter Tilah Buckingham, who suffered a minor knee injury on Saturday, to take out the title beating long time rival Hampden, 10-8. It sees the team going to Melbourne for the association finals later this month. The 15 & Under team also made the title decider and went down by four, also to Hampden, while the 13 & under side bowed out at semi final stage by one with Hampden again the opponent. The two development teams, at 13 & 15 & under level, also performed well. This is the third season, Western Border has sent development teams to the Western Zone Championship and this was the best results by those teams. The three championship junior teams - 13 & under, 15 & under and 17 & under - along with two senior sides are now headed to Adelaide this weekend for the SA Countrry Championship where Western Border is the defending champion in all three junior grades and finished runner-up in A Grade last year.

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association has had another break from its pennant rounds, holding the Commercial Club Handicap Mixed Open Singles Championship at the begining of this month. The Commercial Club Handicap Mixed Open Singles Championship was contested with an impressive 61 entries, of which four guests travelled from Casterton to compete. The first semi final saw Kristy Errock (-3) (Glenburnie) come up against last year’s defending champion Brian Murrell (-3) from Casterton, with Errock winning 5 shots to 2. The second semi final had Gary Bowering (-1) (Saints) be beaten by Steve Von Duve (Post-Tel), who won by 8 shots to 4. The final then saw Von Duve and Errock meet in the final and Errock’s form continued. On the first end Errock scored three shots to make the deficit of her handicap disappear quickly to make

everything even, until the last end when Von Duve was one shot down on the card with one end to play and missed with his last bowl to pick up the jack leaving Errock to score one shot to win by two shots to become the 2017 Commercial Club Handicap Mixed Open Singles Champion by winning 8 shots to 6. The Consolation semi finals had Noel Miller (RSL & District) defeat Grant Wallace (Moorak Red) 7 shots to 4 and Tim Wrightson (RSL & District) defeat Tony Bowditch (-3) (Glenburnie) 9 shots to 0. The Consolation final was taken out by Miller who defeated Wrightson, 6 shots to 5, after drawing the shot with his last to win. Above - Steve Von Duve, Kristy Errock, Noel Miller, & Tim Wrightson

SE VETERANS TENNIS

South East Senior Tennis players enjoyed their first indoor event at Mount Gambier’s Active 8 centre at the end of last month. The winning lady was Elzette Le Roux from Zena Reiner, while Bill Chapman was the winning man from Allan Rex. The next event will be held at Active 8 centre at 11am on June 18. As winter sets in the unpredictability of the local weather is evident - the past two Millicent Bowls Club 2-42 competitions a case in point. On May 25 only 13 players participated on a miserably cold, drizzly day at the Millicent Bowling Club where only one green, the Infigen green, was playable. In the Infigen 2-4-2, a triple and a pair’s team had a 16 shot draw on rink 17. Bill Burdon and Dawn Bellman held a a six shot advantage before Peter Varcoe, Malcolm Wright and David Botting clawed their way back to an exciting finish. On rink 16, Phill Dowdell and Frank Weber finished in second spot with 30+5 and Neil Whelan and Peter Delaney took the prize money with a 31+2 victory on rink

SPORT STATE SELECTION FOR SWIMMER MOTOR MOTOCROSS STAR SECURES NEW CONTRACT Local swimmer, Elijah Stratford has recently been selected in the State SAPSASA swim team to compete at the School Sport Australia, Pacific School Games in Adelaide from the December 2-9. The event, being held at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre, will see athletes involved from 15 countries, including every State and territory in Australia. This event provides the opportunity for more than 4000 school aged students to participate in 11 different sports, at the highest level of competition. Elijah is the only swimmer to be selected from the Lower South East region, and has qualified to swim both freestyle and butterfly, as well as the relays. Jack Richman, from Keith Swimming Club, has also been selected to compete at the games as part of the secondary schools team. At just 11 years of age, this will be Elijah’s second opportunity to represent the state; he was also selected last year where he swam in Darwin. Over the week of the championships, he competed in four events and the journey to Darwin has certainly been one of the highlights of his swimming so far. Elijah is a member of the Mount Gambier Swimming Club, and currently trains at the pool (both morning and night) up to four sessions each week. “Elijah is very excited to be able to have the opportunity to swim at State level once again,” coach JulieMoran said. He has worked very hard at his swimming over the past couple of seasons, all his dedication

and commitment has rewarded him with a spot on the team and he is certainly to be congratulated for this.” Club president Maureen Crowe was also pleased with Elijah’s State selection and believed it hwas due ot his hard work and commitment. Elijah considers that the best thing about swimming is achieving new personal best times. Already this season, he has smashed more than five seconds off most swimming times, and an astounding 13 seconds off his 50m butterfly time. Elijah also attended the ‘Race to Rio’ Olympic Trials in Adelaide last year, where he swam in an exhibition regional relay as a prelude to the championships. Here, he also had the opportunity to meet Dawn Fraser, who spoke about her visit to the Blue Lake many years ago. He has also been fortunate enough to spend time with other swimming greats including Sally Hunter, Dan Kowalski and Pat Murphy, whilst brushing shoulders with Cam McEvoy and Mack Horton.

As a freestyle motocross rider Josh Burdon literally flies by the seat of his pants and another whirlwind opportunity has been presented to the Millicent based freestyler who is headed to Hong Kong for a six month stint of daily shows. It was in July last year that Josh first took up an opportunity for a month in Hong Kong, filling in for some US riders. He took Warrnambool’s Jordan Gillies and the must have made their mark with Josh getting another phone call via the same company and now her is off again this weekend. “They had been talking about it for a little while but nothing really eventuated over the past couple of months,” Josh said. “But then last week they rang and needed me for an immediate

start.” This time he is taking a teenage sensation from Tasmania – Jayden Bailey – a 16 year old. He has a really bright future ahead of him,” Josh said. Äs the owner of FactoryFMX, a freestyle motocross team that provides all its own equipment, including ramps, safety airbags and the like with Josh and his team of professional athletes promise a choreographed show of all the latest stunts and tricks. Josh is always surfing the net to scout new talent and that’s where he found Jayden. Ï have been following him online,” Josh said. ”I haven’t ridden with him yet but from what I can see and what he’s capable of, he’s ahead of his time.” The duo will be given new bikes on arrival in Hong Kong and will be working daily in a zoo. Ït’s basically the same location which is good although this time it’s in a zoo and we are doing two shows a day,” Josh said. “This zoo is massive. There is a stunt car show that goes for about two hours and then we have our part of it. ”Basically it is a 20 minute program and then the riders return at the end of the show for photos and autographs with patrons. Josh has never performed over such an intense period and is looking forward to see how his mental fitness holds up. “When you are putting your life on the line your mind has to be right,” he said. The all expenses paid trip is just the kind of opportunity |Josh hoped his first stint would produce but he was still reticent about taking it initially. Ï will really miss the old man (dad),” Josh said. Ï have

been working crazy hard on the farm to get everything done so there’s not too much for dad while I’m gone.” Once again the goodwill of his employers, The Commercial Hotel, Mount Gambier, has been key in the decision. “They’ve been so good to me and want to see me do well,” Josh said. It is strange for Josh that these opportunities have come through a former classmate Sam Bennett. “He was the one that approached me last year,” Josh said. “When I went over and saw him ride for the first time, he is amazing. It is amazing that there is two guys like us out there doing this from the same class, from little old Millicent.” Josh started learning Chinese last time he headed over and has continued that study. Ï think they appreciate that you try and embrace their language and culture. Left - Josh Burdon in action. Above - Josh Burdon (right) with his Commersh Hotel boss Linda Boylan.
