COVER - CHRONIC BACK PAIN? HELP IS AT HAND! Chronic back pain is a national issue. One in six Australians suffer from the physical and psychological effects of chronic back problems – that’s an estimated 3.7 million people suffering. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare defines chronic back pain as a health condition that lasts for three months or longer. A sedentary lifestyle and poor posture are risk factors for chronic back pain. If you or anyone you know is affected by chronic back pain, the good news is that you don’t need to suffer in
silence. You can visit us to find out how chiropractic care can help. At The Chiropractic Domain we are encouraging our patients and the Limestone Coast community to think about chronic back pain and take steps to improve spinal health. In addition to chiropractic care, simple measures such as incorporating walking into your daily routine can improve chronic back pain symptoms. Walking keeps the spine active and mobile. Improving posture can also help to relieve strain on the spine and improve circulation. Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the spine and nervous system without the use of surgery or drugs. Australian chiropractors are five-year university trained healthcare professionals, regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and must complete mandatory continuing professional development. For chronic back problems, chiropractors use a variety of treatments such as spinal manipulation or manual therapies. Working with other healthcare providers where needed, chiropractors also offer advice on self-management through exercise and lifestyle changes.

training will build upon multiple short daily training sessions of three to five minutes per session.,” Sarah said. “Adult dogs only spend 10-15 minutes each day doing agility training sequences at my property.” Away from the agility specific training, Sarah focuses on general fitness and mental stimulation with the dogs. Agility is a great sport for developing the relationship between owner and the dog and it also helps to build general obedience. Agility is a fast paced sport that allows handlers to start with basic level courses and builds up to complex and difficult courses that require precise timing and direction by the handler. Due to the fast paced and high reward level and excitement of training, dogs quickly love running through tunnels and over the equipment. However it is
important that this is all taught safely from foundation levels up. Agility can be loved by all and even those who struggle with mobility can teach their dogs to work at a distance from the owner. There is an increasing number of primary school aged children now competing with their dogs in agility, which bodes well for the future of the emerging sport. For anyone interested in building the relationship with their dogs, a lot of training is now available online and Sarah recommends Silvia Trkman’s Tricks for a Great Bond and Puppy Diary (www. lolabuland.com) as these are all things that can be taught from within the home. For those interested in learning the basics of agility, Susan Garretts Puppy Peaks and H360 will open up whole new world of training with clearly explained step by step videos that can be done from within the home or at a local park. best handlers, based in Canada. “The sport of agility is constantly evolving as courses become more complex and handling systems adapt to suit the course requirements,” Sarah said. Cali has been competing for three and a half years and has made the National Agility finals every year, culminating in this year’s taking out of the top title. “Training of my dogs starts from eight weeks of age, getting them de-sensitized to different noises and environments, meeting known vaccinated dogs with good temperaments, teaching the dog how to problem solve and shape the behaviours that they look for within the sport of agility,” she said. “Lots of focus is put into relationship building and making training fun and rewarding.” Interestingly, the training is very much in short, sharp bursts. “My younger dogs

Mount Gambier based handler Sarah McDowell and her border collies are making their mark on the Australian Agility landscape with the handler and her most experienced dog Cali returning home from the national championships with the top gong. Cali finished runner-up in the Australian Open Agility Championship last year but this year went one better, being awarded the Australian Agility Champion. Sarah has been competing in agility events for seven years – a passion she had when living in the United Kingdom, where she used to compete regularly at dog trials, before moving to Australia in 2011. Sarah currently has two dogs in competition with one retired border collie. Sarah picked up the sport of agility quickly, thanks to her strong background in dog trials, and continues to train online with two of the world’s

GLENELG SHIRE ROADS A WINNER IN STATE BUDGET Glenelg Shire Council’s road lobbying has continued to pay dividends with the State Government committing $103 million worth of funding to repair key arterial roads in southwest Victoria as part of last week’s State Budget unveiling. The $103 million will include road upgrades such as resealing, resurfacing and rehabilitation works on key roads leading to the Port of Portland to support freight movements and to improve safety in the Glenelg Shire. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank welcomed the news, with the investment following on from the initial $80 million worth of upgrades committed by the State and Federal Governments in 2016. “These road upgrades will ensure that the Glenelg Shire community can continue to grow, proposer and succeed on every level,” she said. “In terms of our local economy, the investment will help to sustain the predicted growth in our timber harvest and other exports feeding to the Port of Portland, which currently services almost ten per cent of the state’s gross domestic product. For local school kids, school buses will be able to run on time and deliver pupils to and from school even on wet weather days. Furthermore, our capacity as a key tourism destination can continue to grow. Portland is becoming recognised as the western end of the Great Ocean Road, one of the most visited tourist destinations in Australia, and we can continue to attract further visitation into our region with a reliable road network. But most of all, the investment to upgrade our roads will mean that our community can travel to and from home safely, which is the best outcome we could possibly hope for. This is funding our community deserves and we look forward to the immediate start of road works.”

projects around South Australia under the third round of this Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure program (TDDI). The Naracoorte Caves is set to receive $600,000 in Federal funding and $785,000 from State coffers. The $1.4 million stage of the Naracoorte Caves Visitor Precinct Upgrade has three main parts. The first part is Stage 2 of the Cave Loop Trail project to complete the trail upgrade. The work includes the construction of viewing platforms, lighting, seating and safety fencing. The second phase is the extension of the trail to the Wet Cave and the Cathedral Caves. The third part of the precinct upgrade is the design, production and installation of interpretation and way finding signage across the main visitor centre precinct and along the Cave Loop Trail, as well as new main entry signage. The works are on track to be completed by the end of next month. South Australian Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said a strong tourism sector was vital for the State.”We are committed to investing in our State’s economic future,” Mr Bignell said. “By upgrading and maintaining our infrastructure we can ensure we offer visitors an excellent experience. TIME TO HAVE YOUR SAY Member for Mount Gambier, Troy Bell MP is encouraging people in the Limestone Coast to get behind the Liberal Party’s Statewide consultation on the future of natural resource management in South Australia. “Our online survey was recently launched which aims to gauge community satisfaction with the state’s eight Natural Resource Management Boards with topics including regional boundaries, board membership and the methods used to raise levies being consulted on,” Mr Bell said. “This consultation is a key step towards developing the Liberal Party’s approach to this important policy area in the lead up to the 2018 election and I encourage people to let us know what they think our reform priorities should be.” The Member for Mount Gambier said natural resource management was an important issue in South Australia. “The feedback I am receiving is that people are dissatisfied with the State Labor

Government’s approach to managing our unique environment,” Mr Bell said. “While the reforms introduced in 2004 may have started with the best of intentions, it seems that all too often bureaucracy has overrun the system, distancing Natural Resource Management from the environments it aims to nurture and preserve. If elected to government in 2018, the State Liberals are committed to ensuring reform in the area of natural resource management is a priority.” As well as an online survey, Natural Resource Management will also become a key discussion point on visits to regional and rural South Australia, with Liberal Leader Steven Marshall and Shadow Environment Minister David Speirs committed to a program of visits to country South Australia as part of the Liberal Party’s ‘Regions Matter’ tour. The survey can be completed online by visiting: http://www.surveymonkey. com/r/nrmsurvey Left - Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell at Terry Buckley’s property as he looks for feedback on natural resource management in South Australia.
Over the past two weeks landscaping works have been completed on Smith Street, Naracoorte, adjacent to the Smith and McRae Street roundabout. Works include the construction of planter boxes and planting of Crepe Myrtle trees. Low growing annuals will also be planted to add seasonal colour. The works are as a result of a decision council at last November’s Naracoorte Lucindale Council meeting, that once summer ended and the weather was cooler and therefore conducive to establishing new plants and private works to the facades of adjoining properties had been completed, landscaping works would occur. The variety of tree was selected to suit the situation. Crepe Myrtles have glossy, leathery, medium green leaves which turn reddish-orange to dark red in autumn with masses of pinkylavender coloured flowers mid-summer to early autumn. The planter boxes match the existing raised garden beds on Smith Street, providing a consistent streetscape. The Crepe Myrtle flowers will match the pink flowers of the English Hawthorn trees located in front of the Naracoorte Town Hall but will only grow to a height of approximately 4 metres at 20 years. More advanced tree specimens were investigated but as a result of expert advice that smaller specimens grow more quickly, small trees were selected. As part of these works, to improve pedestrian safety and amenity, the fence along Smith Street has been

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - I’M TIRED... By ROBBIE TANSEL One of my friends said the funniest thing the other day. She said, “I’m tired.” I laughed and I laughed. I laughed so much that my sides hurt and it was a bit difficult to breathe. What do you mean you don’t see what’s so funny. She doesn’t have children. She’s got no idea of what tired even means! A person who doesn’t have children has no right to suggest they are tired. Anyone who has children understands that there is a different level of exhaustion that a person encounters after their offspring arrives. It’s totally different to the tired that a person in their mid twenties might identify after not getting home until two am from a night at the pub and sleeping in until ten the next morning. It’s not simply a matter of the sleep that you miss out on once precious arrives in your life. Sure, it doesn’t help that the little monster is waking up five times a night screaming for someone to come and serve their needs. Three hours sleep a night is not likely to help a person feel rested…or capable of performing basic daily functions and activities. The effects that children have on awake time is where the actual problems occur. Meal time is one period of the day that leads to parents being fatigued beyond comprehension. It shouldn’t take long to eat a simple dinner meal. At our house it turns into a one hour saga more like negotiating the release of hostages from an insane criminal. The effort it takes to coax Shaquille to put each mouthful of food in his mouth is frightening. His mother is providing a delicious treat and he acts like we’re making him eat vegetables or something. There will be arguments, gagging, bribery, pleading for mercy, blackmail, enquiring as to how many more mouthfuls must be consumed and any number of other tactics while trying to get him to consume a reasonable amount of food. In all honesty I think if we fed and watered him less we’d have a lot less problems. Eventually we do generally get him through a meal but the effort and energy that goes into it for us as parents means we need a good sit down on the couch to regather afterwards. As if meal time is not exhausting enough bath or shower time is normally just before or after meal time. There will normally be a fight about whether the filthy little creature should have to get in the bath/shower, or a fight regarding you wanting them to get out. Sometimes they will not want to get in, and then, making no sense, will not want to get out. It doesn’t make sense, apart from if you understand that the child’s fundamental mission in life is to wear you down to a point where they can overwhelm you and call the shots. After wash and feed times, they are still not finished with their aim of causing complete and utter mental disintegration. It’s bed time. For all of you “tired” people who don’t have children, the child has no intention of giving in to the fact they actually need sleep. Bed time is not really a time, as in 7.15pm. It’s more like an era, as in between 7pm and 9pm. The child will be put in bed, have a story read and be kissed good night. The child will then get up because he’s thirsty. He will have a drink and then go back to bed. He will then get up and ask what he’s doing tomorrow. He will
be told we’ll talk about it tomorrow. He will then be put back to bed. He will then get up as he obviously needs to go to the toilet now. He will then be put back to bed. Repeat for next hour and a half with increasing level of frustration and anger from parents. Don’t talk to me about tired, people without children. You don’t know tired. If you think there should be a law making it illegal for people without children to comment on being tired, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com
DONOVANS UPGRADE The District Council of Grant has installed a new floating landing at the Donovans River Wharf located on waterfront of the Glenelg River. Installed by Sea-Slip Pontoons and Products Pty Ltd, the new landing will move up and down with the river tides to provide a stable and safe landing for fishing, and filters light through the surface to ensure minimal impact on the environment. The project also included an access gangway, four mooring beams, aluminium truss handrails and a poly prop non slip deck is fitted to the gangway trafficable surface. The Donovans River Wharf project was undertaken to create more opportunities for community members and visitors alike to enjoy Donovans as a place for recreational fishing, improve overall safety of the river wharf and generally improve the amenity of the river foreshore. District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage said recreational fishing was a popular pastime and provides social and economic benefits to the Limestone Coast region. “The District Council of Grant aims to provide friendly recreational fishing experiences that not only improve fish habitats, but also enhance recreational and tourism opportunities and support a healthy vibrant community,” Mayor Sage said. “The final product is a great result and will encourage more people to get out and about and enjoying fishing and generally spending time in the area.”The construction was made possible thanks to a $61,000 grant from the South Australian Boating and Fishing Advisory Committee (SABFAC) and Council funds.Council has applied for a grant through the Recreational Fishing SA Grant 2017 to add features to the landing which includes seating, ladders, lighting and fish cleaning stations. Announcement of this grant is expected mid-2017.

ADVERTORIAL - RUSH ON ROSES FOR MOTHER’S DAY With winter firmly in our grip, the switch has been quite sudden and possibly caught all of us off guard. Following on
from our very successful Rose Open Weekend just before Easter, where many of you were able to get a sneak peek at
the 2017 new release roses for this coming winter bare root season, the cut off for ordering has been extended to give you all a bit of time to gather your thoughts at all of the wonderful new varieties. We are well on the way to preparing for digging the first of the bare rooted roses for winter 2017. Don’t forget the new rose Love You is in the nursery now as a Mother’s Day gift idea as well as the ever popular Mother’s Love and The Children’s Rose, too, so reserve them now so you don’t miss out. The reason why it is so important that orders are in as soon as possible is because we have set amounts of roses growing in our paddocks and mail orders have been open since November last year, so by the time we actually have all the roses dug from the paddock, in many instances we are completely sold out of many, but not all varieties. This is especially so with the sought after new releases as orders spiked after the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Festival last month. We had another spike with our new look print advert in last month’s Lifestyle1 magazine, due mainly to the new page layout, that many of you loved and found has a similar styling to our website and you will see (opposite) we have used again this month and may well for future editions. Essentially, as soon as we bring the roses in from the field, grade and rose orders are picked as priority there are often none left to go out for sale. Autumn is a good time to see the intensity of colour in the rose blooms too and is always a good indicator of the true colours of the rose flowers, so now is a good time to purchase and plant potted roses whilst the soil is warm and gain a years extra growth on your bushes. We have posted very accurate photos on our website www.limestonecoastroses. com.au, there is also a pdf version that you can download or print off or ring (08)8723 1325. Hurry if you would like to order the Leukaemia Research and Variety Club roses (see opposite page) for which have received huge demand. Raspberry Tiger
and the entire Drift series of groundcover roses have attracted a lot of attention too and we have grafted some on to patio standard roses too, which are ideal for pots or areas where you want mass colour as they can flower for up to nine months. There are several colours in the series too. We have continued our Early Bird Special on standard roses until May 21 also, so you only have a few days to get in and get a further discount on your order. Limestone Coast Roses is already the lowest priced rose grower in Australia, as you are buying direct, but order early and remember we can send roses all over Australia, so you can even send some of our lovely Limestone Coast grown roses to family and friends, or they can order direct. Here at Limestone Coast Roses we not only supply all the new releases but all the old favourites, such as Double Delight and Mister Lincoln, right through to all the David Austin English perfumed roses, that thrive so well in our climate. We have the largest range of David Austin Roses in Australia as many of the older varieties have gone out of production by the few remaining rose growers in Australia. So, if you have been searching for that old or unusual variety be sure to give us a call as the chances are we may just have it. We also specialise in heritage roses or old fashioned roses from all those lovely old French perfumed varieties, many that have been lost over time. We also stock the entire range of thornless roses which have taken off so well in Australia and we are by far the lowest in prices on these. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, our sister company, is hosting its Autumn Festival of Colours 2017 at present (see opposite page) and in the past few weeks the number of trees that have put on their Autumn splendour is amazing. We are running all sorts of sale specials during the festival, so be sure to bring your trailer when you come. There are half price mop top trees including those with stunning autumn colour such as the
Robinia, Ash Meczek, Liquidambar Mop Tops and ornamental Pear Mop Tops are all colouring up well. The Mop Top Ginkgo biloba looks magnificent at the moment with its golden, butter yellow leaves. Plus there are half price fruit trees, including two way or double grafted citrus, where you get two varieties on the one tree ideal for pots, too. The Canadian Maples or Lipstick Maples are on special and our exclusive range of liquidambars, Chinese tallowwoods, Zelkovas or Japanese Elms and Tupelos are changing colours daily, as well as Silver Birch a favourite for all gardens. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees range of liquidambars includes dwarf varieties, narrow growing varieties - ideal if you are looking for a change from the ornamental pears, that are popping up everywhere! With Mother’s Day fast approaching we are having a few specials on birdhouses and feeders up to 70% off all Giftware, 1/2 price fountains, statues up to ½ price, terrariums, which are back in vogue, and of course, the usual array of chrysanthemums, potted tulips, hyacinths and this year some amazing liliums, plus plenty of potted roses and maybe just a few bare rooted ones if I get to sneak them out of the paddock again and if it all get too hard of course there are gift vouchers. Autumn is a great time to be in the garden with the warmth still in the soil and that wonderful burst of rain last week making the soil ideal for planting. Most of the clearance specials are on the website, so have a browse or call in to 167, Bay Road Mount Gambier (1.3 kms south of the Blue Lake). By Calum Haygarth
KELPIE CENTRE DESIGNS OUT FOR COMMENT
Casterton residents can now have their say on the designs for the new Australian Kelpie Centre. Following community consultation on what the centre should include, draft concept designs have been released by Morton Dunn architects for public comment. The proposed designs include key considerations from the community, such as parking, public art, outside viewing areas and flexible meeting spaces. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita lifestyle1.net | 26
Rank said that community members will be impressed with the functional and timeless designs that have been drafted for the centre. “The architects have shown that they have really listened to the interests and needs of the Casterton community, producing a design that is reflective of the heritage of Casterton but also incorporating modern elements and greenery such as plants and trees,” she
said. “The new Australian Kelpie Centre will enhance the town’s retail precinct, encouraging more local shopping, which will in turn stimulate growth in the region’s economy. But most of all it will provide a clear focal point for the Casterton community as it develops and builds on the tourism potential of the area, particularly in relation to the area icon the Kelpie.” Residents can have their say on the designs online by visiting https:// yoursay.glenelg.vic.gov.au, or by viewing the display at the Casterton Town Hall. The Glenelg Shire Council received grant approval from the Australian Government through National Stronger Regions Fund to construct the Australian Kelpie Centre in Casterton as a tourism hub to promote the town. The new Australian Kelpie Centre will promote the history of Casterton, the offerings of the region and the birthplace of the Kelpie.
MOUNT GAMBIER’S TOP GUN He might be only 15 years old but Kyle Jones has his sights set high – on the sky to be precise. The teenager has already kickstarted what he hopes will
become a career – flying. For around 10 months, the Tenison Woods College student has been taking to the air above Mount Gambier and plying his
craft as a pilot through lessons with Tony Peters of Gambi Air Flying School. And Kyle is determined to clock up the flying hours and learn as much as he can. “There’s a bit of theory you have to learn beforehand and then you just get behind the controls,” he said. “I was a bit nervous before I went up the first time by myself.” But he has been flying solo and it is an impressive achievement. “I feel like since I’ve started, every time I go up I improve massively,” Kyle said. He also knows he needs to concentrate on his schoolwork as he looks to turn this teenage passion into a long term career as a commercial pilot, focussing on maths, physics and English, as much as he focuses on getting up the hours he needs in the
air to work his way through the licence levels for a pilot. The Year 10 student is heading towards double digits with his solo hours and he likes to get out to the airport at least once a week to ply his craft. And he has the full support of his family as he takes these huge steps at such a young age. “It is basically safer than driving a car,” dad Simon Jones said. Kyle also has the stamp of approval of his instructor. “You do have to be quite mature for your age,” Tony said. “Learning to fly and flying by yourself is a fairly responsible thing to do. It requires a good attitude which Kyle displays.” The Gambi Air Flying School instructor would encourage any young person interested in a career in aviation

to follow Kyle’s lead. “Starting when you’re 15, like Kyle has, means a couple of years after finishing Year 12 you will have the experience and qualifications to be a professional pilot,” Tony said. “And if you have the backing of your family and they want to help you along that makes it even better.” The experienced aviator also said being a pilot was about much more than being able to fly a plane. “Being a professional pilot you need to be a good people person and to be able to make appropriate decision, positive decisions.” Tony certainly knows the game – not just from his own flying experience of more than three decades but in those he has taught. “I had one student who started flying when he was in Year 11 and he ended up in the Royal Australia Airforce, flew F18s and flew in both Gulf Wars.” Tony said Gambi Air Flying School was always happy for young people to come and visit the school, ask any questions and see if aviation is for them. “We want to give young people the chance to see what it’s like,” Tony said. “My father was in the airforce during the war and I knew from six years of age that’s what I wanted to do and I want to give other people the chance to see if it’s for them as well.” Tony also highly recommends the path Kyle is taking, where you clock up the hours and move through the general aviation pathway, rather than an airline flying school. “The experience you get, flying 2000 hours making your own decisions is invaluable.” Kyle’s first solo flight was on January 15 this year. Above (top) - Kyle Jones returns from his first solo flight and gets ready for feedback from instructor Tony Peters. Above (left) - Kyle Jones with his first solo flight certificate.

ARTS FESTIVAL READY FOR 26TH YEAR There is one thing the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival committee knew would be tough for the 2017 event – following on from the upsized 25th anniversary festival last year. But they had a plan and believe they have achieved their quality over quantity mantra for this month’s four day event. “We knew we weren’t going to have access to the same resources we had for the 25th celebrations,” president Rhett McDonald said. “We knew we needed to take a step back and continue working on what we have always wanted to be a sustainable event.” One of the points of difference of this year’s festival is a conscious return to the festival’s roots – the literary events. “That’s how it came about in the first place,” Rhett said. “It was the literary side of things and we have made that a real focus in 2017.” And that has been met with great support even before the festival has kicked off. The literary brunch with Salt Creek author Lucy Treloar is sold out but thankfully there are plenty of other events ranging from Paul Mitchell’s author talk, reading and workshops to writer in residence Kate Spain, who will be set up in the town square with a giant blackboard that will be part of the worldwide movement “Before I Die I Want To...”, giving residents a chance to add their thoughts.
The South Australian Writers Centre is also heading to the 2017 event with a view to perhaps becoming a fixture on the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival program. One thing that is genuinely bigger and better in 2017 is the John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize where artists from far and wide are competing for the competition’s biggest ever prize. “Of course we (the committee) can’t take credit for that.” Rhett said. “That is all thanks to the Balnaves Foundation.” The $10,000 winner’s cheque has no doubt helped
attract even more entries to what is already a highly sought after prize on the national art landscape. One of the non-negotiables for festival organisers is CoOpera – a mainstay of the event and one of the first big acts to commit to the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival in its infancy. This year Eugene Onegin is the May 18 CoOpera show – a work composer Tchaikovsky compared favourably with his well known masterpiece Swan Lake. It is based on the Pushkin novel and the unique cabaret style

Glenelg Shire Council’s executive assistant Andrea Bolte was announced as the 2017 Administrative Professional of the Year at the United Way Administrative Professional Breakfast last week. Andrea was recognised for her attention to detail, professional manner and diligence in all work efforts. Andrea said that the award was a great recognition of the ongoing teamwork she shares with her colleagues at the Glenelg Shire Council. “I was delighted to be nominated, and I am both humbled and excited to be announced as the Administrative Professional of the Year,” she said. “I have been working at the Glenelg Shire Council for 33 years, starting as a senior typist, a role which no longer exists due to the advances of modern technology. “In my time at the Glenelg Shire I have worked for eight chief executive officers and I find that every day it is interesting, you never know what will pop up and it is exciting to help the organisation and community in many ways. I’m a born organiser – I love nothing more than organising the CEO’s day and I feel a great sense of achievement with assisting the leadership team and staff members.” Andrea also passed along some words of wisdom to other industry co-workers and aspiring professionals. “I think our guest speaker got it right this morning when she discussed the importance of having a passion, using your skills, and being resilient and determined will help bring you
rewards,” she said. “Sometimes work isn’t easy, but there is a sense of achievement when you reach your goal and that’s what keeps you striving to achieve more.” The morning also featured a presentation from guest speaker Rebecca Maddern, co-host of Channel Nine’s iconic program The Footy Show. Rebecca discussed the makings of her career, using her triumphs and setbacks to inspire others to continue to pursue their goals and ambitions. “There isn’t actually a career path that is laid out for you, you can choose your path and go anyway you want,” she said. “Never

MOUNT GAMBIER SWITCHES ON TO NBN
The switch has officially been flicked on – Mount Gambier is connected to the highly anticipated nbn network. Well, 3000 homes and businesses are now able to enjoy the benefits of fast, reliable internet and by the end of June that number will have exceeded the 10,000 mark. Member for Barker Tony Pasin was front and centre for the momentous occasion last Wednesday, with his day starting at the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting, where business owners were given clarity around connecting to the network as well as the benefits for their business going forward. A self confessed technology luddite, the Member for Barker was thrilled Mount Gambier was set to join many other parts of his electorate as part of the nbn revolution. “As long as technology works, I’m happy but I’m often asking colleagues to help me in that space,” Mr Pasin said. What the local MP does know is that this is the largest infrastructure project in the history of Australia, with a price tag of $49million. “This building program makes the Snowy River Scheme look like a small contract job,” he said. “It is like we are building new roads around the country and now you need to decide what car you want to drive on that road – that’s not a choice for government, it’s a choice for each of you.” And that’s where Community Affairs Manager SA for nbn Tim Saul came in, addressing the breakfast meeting, followed by Mount Gambier City Council and a number of key stakeholders as he looked to remove the mystery surrounding the nbn, unveiling its many benefits. It will underpin innovation; it levels the playing field, with geography no longer being a barrier; it enhances collaboration; it reduces the barriers to entry into the business world, with people about to start a business with confidence; and it will expand your digital marketplace. And that’s a marketplace every business has to embrace – the stats just don’t lie. Every minute, worldwide, there are two million Google searches; 150 million emails sent; Amazon clocks $200,000 worth of purchases; there are one million Tinder swipes and 700,000 facebook log ins – the digital revolution
is here to stay and there is no winding back the clock. “We are not just doing all these things but were are doing them from more devices and more places,” Mr Saul said. He cited business giants who are solely on a digital platform – airbnb, the largest accommodation company that owns no property; Netfix, the largest cinema provider that owns no theatres; and Uber, a transport juggernaut that owns no vehicles. “People want to shop when they want and pay how they want to pay,” Mr Saul said. “And the nbn will help you build the digital platforms that will see you and your business become more digitally mature. It enables you to diversify your customer base and tap into the national and international market.” The Mount Gambier build has been a 6-9month project with testing and commissioning now underway. And just like the transition from analogue to digital television, eventually everyone will also have to embrace nbn technology in order to have access to the internet. That will be an 18 month proves with Mount Gambier’s other networks set to be disconnected by around November 2018. Somewhat overwhelmingly, there are around 80 service providers that can connect you to the nbn network and Mr Saul encouraged personal research, as well as enlisting the advice of a trusted technology expert to find the right fit for you. nbn is the wholesaler so connecting to the network requires communication and negotiation with a service provider. “A good starting point is to say this is what I pay and what I get now – what will I get with nbn for the same price? And then work from there,” Mr Saul said. The nbn was formed in 2009 and there are currently 800 people building the network across South Australia alone. Thirty percent of the national rollout has been completed, which equates to around two million premises across Australia, and it is hoped that will hit 50 percent by the end of June this year, with completion of the project build by 2020. More information on the nbn™ network and how to go about getting connected can be found by visiting www.nbnco. com.au
BEACHPORT COMMUNITY INVITED TO SHARE THEIR VISION FOR 10 YEAR PLAN
The seaside community of Beachport is invited to contribute ideas about the future of its township through the development of a ten year plan for the town. Wattle Range Council has enlisted the assistance of the Beachport District Development Association in drafting the plan which will enable the community to drive their vision for the town and look at developing a strategic approach to projects and initiatives to be progressed over the ensuing 10 years. “Council is working through a process of developing Ten Year Community Town plans for each of the townships within its boundaries,” Director Development Services Steve Chapple said. “The Community Town Plan has been completed for the township of Penola, with Plans for Coonawarra, Millicent and Rendelsham currently in draft stages. The focus is now on the community of Beachport.” An information gathering session for the Beachport Community Town Plan will be on Monday, May 15, in the Beachport Bowling Club. Hosted by the Beachport Business and Development Association and supported by Council staff, the community is invited to participate. Running from 6pm to 8.30pm this initial meeting will help develop a Vision Statement for the township and to list and highlight what makes Beachport unique and what potential is available for the future. Tables of people attending will examine subjects including assets and infrastructure needed for the township, marketing and promotional opportunities, including the use of social media, and what events or celebrations could be held to bring tourists and visitors to area. There will also be the opportunity for those attending to provide their thoughts on social and community needs for the township for the next 10 years. The Beachport District Development Association will then work forward with the development of the ten year plan and present a finalised document to Council. Council will be able to consider the plan as part of their long term planning and budget strategies.

RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE COMMUNITY There are 17million Red Cross volunteers across the world and more than 150 of those are based right here in the South East. They are part of a 40,000 strong Australian Red Cross volunteer base and they are integral to so many vital services in the region. “It’s an amazing figure,” South East Red Cross regional coordinator Greg Baxendale said. “They provide support for more than 3000 clients across the South East.” There is the phone support program, the social support program and the transport service. The phone support service runs 365 days of the year and sees phone operators undertaking welfare checks on more than 200 clients. The social support program sees clients taken on social outings and trips around the district. That program has been made possible by the generous support of the Mount Gambier Community Bendigo Bank, which donated a mini bus in 2012 and that bus has already clocked up more than 180,000kms. The transport service ferries clients to medical appointments around the South East and into Western Victoria. It also sees clients from Naracoorte, Robe, Kingston and Bordertown to Adelaide appointments as well. The administration staff in the office are all critical. “They keep the wheels turning, literally I guess,” Mr Baxendale said. “They make sure we continue to support vulnerable members
of the community.” And like all volunteer reliant organisations, the Red Cross is always looking for volunteers with the right skills. And the corporate world is coming on board as well with the Mount Gambier Community Bendigo Bank, OGR and the NAB all having volunteer programs for their staff, who spend some time with the Red Cross as part of those programs. “It is great to see volunteering as part of the
local corporate culture,” Mr Baxendale said. “And they talk about how they get so much out of it. When you volunteer you find out that you really can make a difference in someone’s life – it really is true. You get as much out of it as the clients do.” Red Cross volunteers were also a massive part of the clean up after Cyclone Debbie in Queensland so all local volunteers are always mindful of the bigger picture.
COUNCIL SET TO HONOUR VOLUNTEERS The District Council of Grant is privileged to have a wide section of community volunteers involved in around 140 organisations throughout the district including those involved with sporting, charity, youth, environmental, education, emergency services, history, art, seniors and progress committees. As part of National Volunteers Week, the annual Volunteers’ Morning Tea will be hosted by the District Council of Grant this Thursday at 10.30am, at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex. “It is great to have so many volunteers from many different groups and townships mixing at one celebration,” Mayor Richard Sage said. “The morning tea is a way to show appreciation to the wonderful volunteers who help provide much needed services & support to the District Council of Grant community.“ Volunteers from any club, school or organisation in the District Council of Grant are welcome to attend the morning tea.

LOCAL SPORT PIONEERS START ROAD DOUBLE WITH VICTORY The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers hit the road this weekend after getting the job done at the Icehouse for the past few weeks. And it was tough but started well with an eight point win over Sandringham on Saturday night. It saw the Pioneers remain undefeated in season 2017 and again it was captain Tom Daly, import Daniel Alexander and Allan Scott Medallist Brad Hill who led the way in what was an even team performance with all players having an impact either on the scoreboard or on the stats sheet. Hill led allcomers for the Pioneers with 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists; while Alexander was also busy with 17 points and seven rebounds. Daly had 16 points and four rebounds and was again the general in the back court. The Pioneers led by four at the first break and that extended to eight by the main break. The first half was an arm wrestle and not much changed in the second half, with Pioneers leading by nine at the final change and eight at the final whistle. Daly had a strong opening quarter, which has been a hallmark of his 2017, hitting eight points, two rebounds and picking up a steal, while 16 of Hill’s 22 points came in a consistent second half. Alexander had a quiet opening but worked his way into the contest and to again be influential. The Pioneers impressive start to 2017 has seen coach Richard Hill named coach of the month and his record since taking over at the Icehouse would be the envy, not just of other SEABL coaches, but coaches at elite level across all codes. The Pioneers had to back up Sunday against the competition’s other undefeated side – Nunawading. Check our facebook page for results.

CROQUET CLUB CHALLENGE GOES TO CASTERTON
Millicent Bowls Club president Colin Pye recently made a special presentation to Jim Edgcumbe recognising his dedication to the sport of lawn bowls. Jim began his long association with the sport when he was accredited as a National Umpire in October 1976. This was followed by gaining recognition as an Umpire’s Tutor on January 18, 1988. For the next 28 years Jim served as the Umpire’s Trainer of the Millicent Bowls Club, as well as many other clubs in the Lower South East Bowls Association, and was the LSEBA Umpire Liaison Officer for many of those years. The incoming president said he was honoured to represent the members of the Millicent Bowls Club in presenting Jim with this certificate as a tribute to him for all he has given the region, club and bowls, in general, over the past 41 plus years. “TWe thank Jim for mentoring so many fellow players as well as the training to successful accreditation he gave so many officials,” Colin Pye said. “Jim’s dedication to the sport is widely known and appreciated.”
The Mount Gambier Croquet Club and the Casterton Croquet Club recently held a competition between the clubs playing the game of Golf Croquet. It was a four week competition during April with games played at both clubs. Doubles and single games were played with the Casterton team taking out the team event, with Chris Hankin, from the Mount Gambier Club taking out the indiviual honours..
