TIME TO FAREWELL THE FRINGE WITH SOME HOMEGROWN TALENT It is Louise Adams’ time to shine on her home turf, as she brings what is her seventh Adelaide Fringe Show – a project that is a genuine labour of love on a few levels - to Mount Gambier for the closing weekend of the Fringe Mount Gambier. Her 2017 offering is a cabaret style musical show, which is something she has always wanted to tackle and it centres on a wonderful childhood memory for her, as an emerging musician – MTV Unplugged. “Growing up as a music lover before the internet really took off and you could watch whatever you wanted on You Tube, MTV Unplugged was the only way to watch a range of artists perform,” Louise said. “It was this live intimate performance coming through your TV into your lounge room. It was the only way to see your favourite bands from around the world. You could close the curtains and almost feel like you were there.” For her Fringe show, which hits the Cave Gardens stage this Friday night, Louise has looked to capture what MTV Unplugged, which is still going today almost 30 years after it’s debut, meant, not just to her, but its influence on music and pop culture. Her show A Tribute to Unplugged will see her perform music from a diverse range of artists who have gone unplugged, including grunge rockers such as Nirvana, crooner Tony Bennett, the legendary Prince and even pop stars like Katy Perry. She has enlisted the help of local, Adelaide and interstate based musicians as part of her show, which
has already enjoyed a successful run on the Ukiyo Stage at The Royal Croquet Club on March 12 & 13 as part of the Adelaide Fringe. But the excitement for Louise in 2017 is that her show is now headed to Mount Gambier this Friday night in the Cave Gardens Precinct, as part of Fringe Mount Gambier. Louise was an ambassador for the month long festival, which has been running since February 24, including a series of Country Arts SA performances, renowned Fringe artists, and local performers. Fringe Mount Gambier been one of the many projects she has been involved with over the past 12 months and she is excited about what this unique opportunity could do for arts across the Limestone Coast. Expat Adam Page is another homegrown talent set to be part of his hometown Fringe program on this closing weekend with a performance on Saturday night, also in the Cave Gardens. “It’s about bringing the world class performances here, as well as using home grown talent,” Louise said. “I just want to see it be a success and not just this year but an ongoing success.” For Louise, programs like Fringe in Mount Gambier can be essential building blocks in creating a sustainable series of events to build an ongoing vibrant arts culture in this region. Louise wants artists across all spectrums to realise they can pursue a career in the arts – whether they choose to stay or go – and she certainly practices what she preaches. “There can be certain benefits to living in a city,”
Keeping control of your nest egg?
she said. “But my home is in Mount Gambier on our farm and that’s where we see our future. We’re lucky we live in a modern world, where you can pursue a career like this and live in the place you want to live.” With that in mind, one of Louise’s other pet art projects, SouthEast X SouthWest, has inaugurated a “Send Me To Fringe” development program and this year the two sponsored acts were visual artist Henry Jock Walker, formerly of Keith, who is best known

as the abstract artist who paints while he surfs, and former Mount Gambier dancer Gavin Clarke, who is now based in Sydney and is a musician and actor as well. “The development program will be for people that live in the region of have a link back here.” Basically it aims to give the performers a platform in their own backyard with the view to developing a show to be performed at the Adelaide Fringe the following year.

A new program starting in Portland in April will give people a chance to beat their alcohol and drug problems. Sliding Doors is an intensive, non-residential rehabilitation program that helps people with life and employability skills and gives them strategies to avoid relapsing into addiction. The program is being offered by the Portland District Health drug and alcohol team as part of the Great South Coast Drug Treatment Consortium. The Sliding Doors program was successfully piloted in Warrnambool and has been modified for the Portland region. Portland District Health AOD Family Support Project Officer Wendy Howe said Sliding Doors could change people’s lives The recovery-based model is for people who have made a commitment to stop using their drug of concern. “It is a day rehabilitation program that supports people who could have had a variety of drug and alcohol issues,” Ms Howe said. “There are no residential detox and rehabilitation programs in our region and those in Melbourne can’t keep up with the demand. This gives people an opportunity to take part in a therapeutic day program in their own town and gives them links to services and community groups.” The program aims to change the thinking of people with addiction problems and provide them with skills to maintain motivation to stop their substance abuse. The weekly sessions include work skills exercises, art therapy, healthy living opportunities with advice from an exercise physiologist and dietitian, relapse prevention and relaxation. “We aim to build on their work and life skills and help them to look at how addiction not only impacts on their lives but also on their family and friends,” Ms Howe said. The eight-week program starts on April 4. People can refer to the program through ACSO Connect on 1300 022 760 or medical professionals can speak to a member of the experienced AOD Counselling team (03)55 210350. It has been funded as part of the Victorian Government’s Ice Action Plan.

COUNTDOWN TO MONTH LONG HOOKED ON TUNA FEST It’s a new year and new look for one of Victoria’s most up and coming fishing events. Dates for the 2017 Portland Hooked on Tuna Fishing Fest have been confirmed, with this year’s new-look festival to be held over four weekends in April. The competition will open on Saturday, April 8, with a huge foreshore celebration and will continue each weekend until Sunday, April. 30 Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the rebranded event would be more than just a fishing competition with a vast array of family friendly events on offer during the opening weekend. The festivities will be headlined by a celebrity chef, which will be announced in the coming days, completing cooking demonstrations using freshly caught tuna as part of a ticketed Long Lunch celebration coordinated by the Committee for Portland, which forms part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Further attractions include interactive fishing displays, local food producer stalls, beer presentations, fishing clinics for children, boat tours of the harbour, live music, and a vast array of markets. Cr Rank said council was working to position the festival as an iconic Victorian tourism event, which would attract thousands of visitors to the region annually and brand Portland as Australia’s tuna capital. “Portland is home to a world class recreational fishing industry and this event is about celebrating this rich resource,” she said. “Already tens of thousands of anglers travel from across the country each year in lure of these monstrous catches. This year is not only about attracting fishermen, this is about including their family and friends who may not necessarily want to enter the competition opportunities to explore our local foreshore, retail stores and tourism attractions.” Last year’s inaugural tuna competition attracted almost 200 anglers from across Victoria and South Australia. Portland-based angler Brodie Carter was the overall winner with a 20.5kg tuna. This year’s entrants will again be vying for more than $12,000 in prize money, with weigh-ins each Saturday and Sunday afternoon coordinated by the Portland Sport Fishing Club with support from the Portland Lions Club and Portland Coast Guard. DICE RUN SET TO RAISE MUCH NEEDED FUNDS FOR LOCAL FAMILY
The Longriders Christian Motorcycle Club is looking to help a local family in need by holding a Dice Run this Saturday. Two year old Patrick Jennings has been diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphona and has started cancer treatment at the Royal Children’s Hospital, in Melbourne.
SOMERFIELD MAKES A CLEAN SWEEP OF CRICKET AWARDS For the best part of the past decade, David Somerfield has spent the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association Barber Shield grand final having a say, whether with bat or ball or both. It was an unusual feeling for the popular allrounder at the weekend as he sat in his deck chair on the other side of the Frew Park picket fence and you suspect he would hand back the silverware he picked up during the week at the association’s awards night to be out on the field, rather than enjoying a beer with team mates. Somerfield surprised the cricket world in the off season, leaving South Gambier, a club where he is one of the Maroons favourite sons, a part of the club’s recent dominance of Barber Shield, and opted to call McCorquindale Park home. His home venue might have changed but the ability of the allrounder to dominate a contest did not and Somerfield (below) claimed the
bowling trophy, batting trophy and the top honour of the night – the Bill Whitty Medal. In a season where he took 33 wickets and scored 458 runs, Somerfield would still long to have the last couple of hours of semi final weekend back when Penola came so close to securing a drought breaking grand final berth. Not surprisingly, Somerfield was named skipper of the team of the year, that included his Eagles team mate Jase Bateman; North Gambier’s Matt McInerney, Michael Silvy, Scott Kenny and Tim Young; East Gambier’s Dion Stratford and Ben Clark; Kongorong’s Alex Hentschke and Michael Waters and West Gambier brothers Bowen and Ryan Hosking. Bowen Hosking (pictured right) picked up the PL Marrett Award for the best under 21 player in the Barber Shield, having had an impact in his first season of A Grade with both bat and ball. The other A Grade awards
went to Dylan Clough (fielding) and Stratford (wicket keeping). Dewain Barrett (Centrals) took home the Crouch Shield player of the year; Yahl’s Robert Courtney and North’s Steve Fisher shared the Cox Bros Shield player of the year honour and Allendale’s Zack Williams took home the top individual award for the Butchart Shield. FULL LIST OF WINNERS ACROSS ALL GRADES ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.
Patrick and his family need as much support as possible and that is why the Longriders have got behind this cause.

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY Come along to the Naracoorte Town Square this Friday at 10.30am for the Harmony Day Children’s Festival when around 1000 children from schools, kindergartens and child care centres will come together to celebrate Harmony Day. Each school will perform an item and then everyone will perform a combined dance. The program kicks off with Naracoorte High School music students performing Dream a Dream of Harmony, followed by Naracoorte South Primary School students dancing to Ridgey Didge. Naracoorte North Kindergarten and the Naracoorte Child Day Care Centre will then entertain everyone with a trio of nursery rhyme songs and actions. It’s then time for some quiet reflection while the Sunrise Christian School tells a story. Colours of Australia, a song celebrating the diversity of Australia put out by the Australian Human Rights Commission, will be performed by the Michelle DeGaris Memorial Kindergarten. This will be followed by a special performance by a group of Naracoorte South Primary School students. The students from Frances Primary School then take to the soundshell for Count on Me before the celebrations culminate with Naracoorte Primary School dancing to Can’t stop the Feeling. The morning activities will end with a bang with all particiapting children dancing together to We Belong Together. “The We Belong
Together combined dance is a great spectacle of fun and unity,” Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery said. “Everyone is welcome to come along to the Naracoorte Town Square and celebrate the different nationalities that make up our community and celebrate Harmony Day with the children.”In the evening celebrations move to the Naracoorte Swimming Lake for the Wish Festival from 6-9pm. A variety of entertainment commences at 6pm with the following performers - Naracoorte Pipe Band, Kayleigh Meyers, Paul Oster, a duo by Edgar and Christian, including karaoke, and an encore performance of the We Belong Together children’s combined dance. At 8pm when the sun is setting you can float a candle on the lake to show that everyone is welcome. Bring your own picnic and rug or chairs to sit on. Candles can be pre-purchased at the Naracoorte Visitor Information Centre or purchased on the night at the Swimming Lake. Everyone is welcome to both the day and evening events.“The Harmony Day activities highlight that EVERYONE BELONGS while celebrating all the different nationalities that make up our community,” said Mayor Vickery. “It gives us all an opportunity to share our backgrounds and learn more about each other.”
What is Harmony Day? Harmony Day is a day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity, share what we have in common and celebrate the diversity of our country. Harmony Day is a community celebration. Multiculturalism is in Australia’s national interest and speaks to fairness and inclusion – it enhances respect and support for cultural, religious and linguistic diversity. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. Multicultural Australia is an integral part of our nation’s history and character. The central message for Harmony Day is that ‘everyone belongs’, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. The colour orange represents Harmony Day as traditionally the colour orange relates to social communication, stimulating two-way conversations. It aids in the development of new ideas and frees the spirit of its limitations, giving us the freedom to be ourselves. At the same time, it encourages self-respect and respect of others.

PENOLA PRIMARY SCHOOL SET TO REAP BENEFITS OF OPEN DAY Rose enthusiasts, aspiring gardeners and families looking for a day out are expected to converge on Wagner’s Rose Nursery for their fifth Open Day to be held next month. The day is designed to give people an opportunity to experience the unique rose nursery - set in the heart of the Limestone Coast’s Kalangadoo region - to be inspired to grow roses, or simply to enjoy the food, wine and roses on offer. Wagner’s is one of Australia’s largest and longest running rose nurseries and will showcase a slice of its 50 hectares of roses on the day. Planned around the nursery’s peak flowering season, the Open Day - on Sunday, April 9 provides visitors with the chance to see more than 600 varieties of roses in full bloom and to sneak a peek at the new 2017 rose releases. A large selection of yearling and two year old rose bushes and standards will be in flower. “We’ve been running the open days for several years now and are thrilled that it gives people the opportunity to see our roses at their best,” said owner Brian Wagner. “Many weeks go into the preparation of the nursery and roses prior to the day, to ensure that the roses
are in full bloom – which gives visitors a good idea of what to expect in their own gardens.” Throughout the day Brian will give tips and ideas on growing roses, from planting through to pruning. He’ll be doing demonstrations and ‘walkaround tours’ amongst the rows - both designed to give visitors an understanding of how to easy it is to grow roses. There’ll be a selection of food available including a sausage sizzle, pizzas, other selected food trucks and homebaked goods. Kalangadoo Organic Orchards will have their produce for sale, along with cider tastings from Kalangadoo-sourced apple cider company The Cide Project. Coonawarra based Grey-Smith Wines will also showcase their wines with tastings and sales. A play space for the children will ensure everyone is looked after. Padthaway based sculptor Bruce Willmer will be returning with his popular ironwork garden sculptures, and due to an overwhelming response last year, has been working on many new
sculptures in preparation for this year’s Open Day. A large selection of potted plants and bunches of roses will be available, with many pots at special prices and discounts offered on all sales taken from the day. All proceeds will go toward Penola Primary School. Wagner’s supplies to rose nurseries across Australia and has recently built on its strong wholesale customer base with a successful expansion into direct retail sales. It now exports its field grown bareroot roses into global markets including the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and New Caledonia. EVENT DATE: SUNDAY, APRIL 9 WHAT: Wagner’s Rose Nursery Open Day WHERE: Wagner’s Rose Nursery, 20 Koorine Road, Kalangadoo DETAILS: 10am–4pm Entry $8 adult, children under 15 free. SHOUT OUT TO BUDDING STREET ARTISTS
Glenelg Shire Council is inviting and encouraging all young people in the region to come and learn some new skills these school holidays with Ballarat Artist, Stuart Walsh (pictured above with some budding street artists). Make Your Mark @ the Park Project is a free street art workshop being held at both the Hamilton and Coleraine Skate Parks during the April school holidays. Funded by Victorian State Government’s Community Crime Prevention Unit, the project aims to engage youth and raise awareness about the consequences of illegal street art. Council is excited to have artist Stuart Walsh on board to host the workshops, who has extensive experience in engaging young people in community public art projects. The two-day workshops will be held in Hamilton on April 4 and 5 and in Coleraine the following week on April. 10
and 11. The free workshops will run from 10am-4pm each day. All materials and masks will be provided on the day, and the event is open to community members aged 10-25 years. Younger children wishing to attend must be supervised by an adult at all times. Council CEO Michael Tudball called on all young people in the Shire to get involved in the project. “Make Your Mark @ the Park is a fantastic free event running through the school holidays that aims to engage young people to create a sense of ownership over the space, educate them about the consequences of illegal street art and increase their opportunity to explore their artist skills while enhancing a community space,” he said. “We often hear that there isn’t much for young people to do in our towns, so here’s a great opportunity to be involved with a really unique and fun project in your community! We’ve also go the YMCA Skate Park Leagues Regional Final being held in Hamilton on April, 9 so really, the timing couldn’t be better to showcase the local street art talent of our young people”. Intro sessions at both Skate Parks are being held prior to the two day workshops next month. The intro sessions will provide the opportunity to have some input in the design phase by creating the stencils, which will be used during the street art workshops. The Hamilton Intro Session will be held on Thursday, March 23, between 4.30-6pm and in Coleraine on Friday, March 24, between 5.30-7pm. Refreshments will be provided. People are still able to join in the two day workshops, even if they can’t attend the intro sessions. For further information, keep an out for promotional posters, follow Council on Facebook or contact the Council Recreation Coordinator on (03)5551 4308.

LOCAL TOY LIBRARY HOLDING FAMILY FUN DAY Children and their families are invited to the Mount Gambier Toy Library Family Fun Day this Saturday
from 10am to 2pm at the John Frew Centre, Frew Park, to view and test out some of the toy library’s collection of
600 fun and educational toys available for loan. Other free activities will include face painting, arts and craft, thanks to Kids Spot Mount Gambier, a magician, a sausage sizzle, and toy library balloons to give away. Toy Library publicity officer Michael Buxton said a fun day was planned and everyone was welcome. “We hope after seeing the range and quality of toys that the toy library has, that new members will join up on the day and borrow some of our fantastic toys,” he said. The toy library is open on Mondays and Saturdays, from 10–11.30am, during school terms, and on Saturdays, 10–11.30am, during holidays, at the John Frew Centre, Frew Park, 48 Penola Road, Mount Gambier. The toy library is a local not-forprofit organisation, run entirely by volunteers, for children up to 10 years. Toy libraries across Australia aim to support families and encourage togetherness through quality time spent playing with children. The Mount Gambier Toy Library is also launching new membership fees and annual memberships are being offered on the day at a discounted rate (12 months membership for the price of six). The special prices start at $5 per child per year (max $10 per family) for volunteers, which enables each child to borrow two toys and one puzzle or game for up to two weeks at a time. For those unable to volunteer, membership on the day is $15 per year for one
child, and $25 per year for two or more children, while concession card holders receive some discount ($10 per year for one child, and $15 per year for two or more children). “The toy library has a wide variety of large and small toys to stimulate children at play, including ride-on toys, climbing frames, puzzles, logic games, educational toys, kitchens, large train sets, toys for babies and costumes,” Michael said. “When your child stops playing with the toys you can return
them to the toy library and borrow new ones, providing your child with the opportunity to play with a varied and stimulating range of toys and resources matched to their age, needs and interests. Our members have told us that the toy library has been a great resource to try toys to assess your child’s interest before making a purchase for home helping to save money and toy clutter at home as well as reducing your impact on the environment.” The toy library can be contacted at contactus@mountgambiertoylibrary. org.au or https://www.facebook.com/ MountGambierToyLibrary.
LATEST ORCHID SOCIETY NEWS
The recent Orchid Society of Mount Gambier meeting saw a very interesting demonstration of bonsai pruning, potting and care from Robert Miles (pictured), from the Bonsai Club - he even pruned one of the member’s bonsai he had brought in. The next meeting is on Monday, March 27, from 7.30pm, at the Reidy Park Centre and will feature Robert Wood and an orchid computer program that looms as very useful for orchid growers. He will be showing the group a program called Orchid Whiz that lists all registered orchids, tells you the correct name and the parents of the plants for hybrids. Members can bring in plants and/or labels and find out the correct name or more about the plant to help grow it. For more details contact Robert Wood on (08)8723 2953 or check out the society’s facebook page. Visitors are always welcome.

MUSIC HEADLINE ACTS CONFIRMED FOR FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL The Grampians Grape Escape has announced the Quarry Mountain Dead Rats (QMDR), William Crighton and Chris Wilson will form part of an exciting and talented entertainment line-up at this year’s food and wine festival in Halls Gap, May 6 & 7. The festival weekend is the grand finale to a month dedicated to the glorious food and wine produced in the Grampians, with Partner Events taking place across the region throughout April. QMDR vocalist and mandolin player, Chris Wishman (aka ‘Wishy’) said the band was looking forward to performing at the festival. “We’re really stoked to be heading to the Grampians to explore the region and play at the Grampians Grape Escape,” Mr Wishman said. “The location is awesome and we definitely want to get involved in some grape stomping action.” QMDR’s instrumentation of banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, double bass and washboard combines to form a completely unique style of raw and gritty bluegrass beats that will have Grape Escapers up singing and dancing along
in no time. Featuring as one of Rolling Stone’s hottest rising stars in the September issue last year, and off the back of two very well received national headline tours, William Crighton’s popularity as a must-see Australian performer is sky rocketing. Having recently released a third single from his highly commended debut album, Crighton’s deep and captivating voice will leave the audience mesmerised while master of his craft, Chris Wilson entertains with his dynamic power performance which includes the harmonica and guitar. Grampians Tourism CEO Will Flamsteed said the event was a celebration of the region’s best. “The Grampians Grape Escape is a month long celebration of the quality food and wine produced locally in the Grampians and we are delighted to be able to showcase our best to visitors and locals alike,” he said. “The festival atmosphere is something I look forward to every year and this year’s entertainment line-up will certainly add to that. There are heaps
more artist announcements to come so stay tuned to our Facebook page.” Visit Victoria has invested $35,000 into the 2017 Grampians Grape Escape as part of the Victorian government’s $20 million Regional Events Fund. Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism
and Major Events Danielle Green made the announcement at the inaugural Grampians Music Festival in Halls Gap recently. “A month of fantastic food and wine in the beautiful Grampians – what’s not to love? The Grampians Grape Escape is a great way to bring people together and attract visitors to the region, which means more jobs and a boost to local business,” Ms Green said. In addition to the exciting music line-up, the thousands of foodies and wine lovers descending on the magnificent Grampians National Park will be entertained by headline chef and television personality Adam Liaw, who will be hosting cooking demonstrations
on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7. Masterclasses with local producers showcasing their talents and local vintners sharing their wine knowledge are again sure to be a hit with festival attendees, while connoisseurs will bid for the best shiraz from the Grampians region in the hotly contested Barrique Auction. COMMUNITY COMES UP WITH ITS OWN SOLUTION It’s a community problem that needs a community solution and that’s what is happening across this region, with Millicent leading the way. The drug ice and the impact it has on addicts, their families, the justice system, the health system and the wider community has been well documented – as has the lack of support services for addicts in this region, including the push for a rehabilitation centre. But one group that is so often forgotten is the families of addicts and that’s where community mentor and advocate Kate Amoroso and Millicent business leader Mike Reilly have joined forces to set up a Millicent Family Support Group. The first meeting was held in December and the monthly gatherings are providing much needed support for families at a loss as to how to deal with this insidious drug. “It has affected my family,” Mike said. “And we had nowhere to go – we just didn’t know where to go as parents.” While services, particularly at a local level, are less than satisfactory for those looking to fight the addiction, there were at least some options, while families, already feeling helpless and, at times, shell shocked, there was nowhere to turn. “Addicts can go to a doctor or the
hospital or seek rehabilitation, parents can’t,” Mike said. And that’s why the Millicent Family Support Group has been established, with groups in Mount Gambier and Naracoorte also developing. Both Kate and Mike are extremely grateful for the support the Wattle Range Council has given to the group. “Wattle Range Council was so willing to give us a room to meet,” Kate said. “They have been so supportive and allowed the community to be proactive.” Mike was also grateful his local council was prepared to throw their support behind the vital group. “It’s a group formed by people around people that have had the experience,” Mike said. “It is a non-judgemental forum there for people who are struggling or just need to chat, or just want to sit and listen. It’s not a meeting, it’s a get together, a gathering.” The Millicent and Districts Health Support Group, another community driven initiative, has also thrown its support behind the Family Support Group. “They are all about helping people where to go when they don’t know where to go,” Mike said. “Things like treatment, accommodation, transport.” Mike understands firsthand how difficult it is to face the seemingly overwhelming
issue of ice addiction in someone you care about but he does believe talking about it and bringing it out into the open is the best way forward. “As a parent you do think what have I done that’s so bad to make my child turn to this,” he said. “But that’s not the case. I know amazing, successful people that have had to deal with this issue. You didn’t choose this but it’s there and you just need to know where you can go and where to start.” The support group is for parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, anyone that is struggling with how to deal with an addict and what their role should be in the addict’s rehabilitation. The group, with the assistance of Kate, is also looking to roll out some school visits, including an education program that Kate is currently putting together. “We are looking at high school visits and late primary school students as well,” Mike said. “I’m not one of those people who sits back when something needs to be done. Yes, I’ve been affected and that’s part of the reason but I’ve seen a need for something to happen and someone needs to just stand up and do it. I figured it may as well be me.” Having someone with the experience and expertise of Kate on hand has been
lifestyle1.net | 31
a godsend for Mike as the community advocate continues her push in the corridors of power for better services for addicts in their own home region. Having to go to Adelaide or Melbourne for rehabilitation is not really viable,” Kate said. “That’s why I am pushing so hard for a rehabilitation facility here, so people can go through this difficult process with family and friends close by. If you’re trying to get clean in this region, it is a tough gig.” And while she is busy working closely with addicts, Kate agreed with Mike about the need for family support as well. “I felt it was my place to start making some of these things happen,” Kate said. “Families need to talk about it and they need to have somewhere safe to start talking about it and realising they are not alone.” Kate’s work in this sector is independent and self-funded, not working for any government agency or with any financial support, which is why assistance, like Wattle Range Council providing a meeting space for the Family Support Group is so critical in setting up these community based solutions. Anyone interested in joining the Millicent Family Support Group or looking for any help should contact Kate via email
enoughisenough5290@gmail.com or call 0474 724 626 or call Mike on 0455 134 335 or via facebook. “I want to empower communities and I want to thank the Millicent community for getting behind this,” Kate said. “I believe as a Limestone Coast community we can be a leader in this and set the standard for change right around Australia.”
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES WITH PROVEN SUCCESS
YOU’LL FALL IN LOVE Based on her best selling memoir, Hello, Beautiful! Hannie Rayson has created her own one-woman show - a 60-minute piece of comic storytelling and it’s coming to Portland for one eprformance only. Hello, Beautiful! is written and performed in the style of David Sedaris, Nora Ephron and Spalding Gray - true stories from a life, spiced with wit, social observation, and intimacy. Hannie road-tested the content from Perth to Far North Queensland, during her 2015 book tour. From country town halls to woolsheds, to prisons and theatres, audience members said, “You should do your own show.” So she did. Hello, Beautiful! the play opened in Melbourne at The Malthouse Theatre
in May, directed by Malthouse Artistic Director, Matthew Lutton. Hannie trained as an actor at the Victorian College of the Arts and although she has spent her working life as a playwright, she found herself wanting to bring together the writer and performer in her own show. Next year she begins a massive tour of Victoria, followed by a national tour. “In writing the memoir, I imagined my audience, the reader, tucked up in bed, laughing out loud. I wrote as though I were talking to a friend,“ Hannie said. With Hello, Beautiful! her one-woman show, Hannie further develops this quality of speaking directly and eloquently to an audience. “This seems to satisfy a desire on the part of audiences for the stories of real lives and real connections,” she said. HELLO, BEAUTIFUL! Tuesday, March 28 • 7:30pm Portland Arts Centre Written and Performed by Hannie Rayson Duration: 60 minutes. No interval • Warning: Contains coarse language Tickets: www.portlandartscentre.com. au or call (03) 55222263 Left - Hannie Rayson on stage as part of her one woman show which is heading to Portland.
There is a significant spotlight on just how healthy are our lifestyles. From diet to exercise and general well being along with mental and emotional health, magazine copy has never been more filled with the topics, and you can add to that reality TV shows and a vast array of social media platforms spruiking what’s best. For more than five decades, there has been a weight loss program getting the job done, and while it has been somewhat drowned out by the plethora of options in this space, Weight Watchers in this region is still going strong with some wonderful success stories. As a program, Weight Watchers has also evolved and you can find out just how by attending one of the three meetings offered by Weight Watchers Mount Gambier. There is Wednesday at 5.30pm; Thursday at 12.15pm and Saturday morning at 9.30am – all held in the meeting room at the Mount Gambier Community RSL (entry is via the rear car park and it is the last door on your right). The Mount Gambier group is campaigning for new members as it looks to spread the word that Weight Watchers is still a viable option if you are looking to reset your lifestyle, with healthy eating, exercise and a positive mindset. There are three weight loss coaches in the Mount Gambier group – Tania Kent, Loraine Baron and Megan Hammond. Each takes a meeting but attend all three so there is always plenty of helpful advice on hand. “That way if it is buys there is still that opportunity for one on one time,” Tania said. “If someone wants to speak to you
about their own personal journey then we’re happy to do that.” While Weight Watchers does offer online services, in terms of coaching and support, the overall consensus is the accountability and support that group meetings provide, makes it more effective. “You are accountable for your weight each week,” Tania said. “The support of other people in meetings seems to be rally important and we have a fantastic group of people that go. People do find they lose their motivation if they don’t go to a meeting.” There is also a private facebook group and a weekly newsletter, adding to the support the Mount Gambier Weight Watchers group provides. This month’s Weight Watchers magazine’s cover story is about Anna Van Dyken, a Western Australian based convert who has lost 70kgs on the program, and the good news for Mount Gambier members is she is closely associated with the local group through her friendship with Tania. “She (Anna Van Dyken) is the reason I went back to Weight Watchers,” Tania said. “We’ve become really good friends and she contributes to our facebook group and newsletter every week. It was her dream to make it onto the cover of Weight Watchers magazine and she is living it at the moment.” Weight Watchers meetings Australia wide focus on the same topic each week as the meetings focus on the three pillars of the program – food, fit and feel. “It’s not just about food anymore,” Tania said. “It’s got a real focus on exercise and mental health and making sure

you do things for yourself.” Meetings also sometimes include experiences, including visits from personal trainers, or the occasional visit from Wendy Richardson, from Redgum Country, with some fashion advice. A former gym instructor, Tania’s own personal Weight Watchers journey is an interesting one. “Weight Watchers used to have meetings in a room at the current Swimskool building in Keegan Street when Tonic Gym was a part of that complex. “One day I decided to grab a timetable, I went to a Body Jam class and I liked it and eventually became an instructor,” she said. “I was never interested in health and fitness before that and it really got me into it.” All Weight Watchers coaches are accredited by the weight loss program and the training is ongoing, mainly through webinars. Local group member Raelene Grills has been part of Weight Watchers since 2007. “It keeps me on track,” she said. “Going to meetings helps keep my focus. It’s social, everyone is always encouraging each other, they teach you how to eat. I never miss a meeting and the people running it are great.” Peta Haines, who has been part of the group for 12 months and travels from Millicent to get her weekly Weight Watchers fix, is also full of praise. “I did Weight Watchers years ago and I found it worked,” Peta said. “I needed to lose weight again and so I came back 12 months ago and once again it worked. The accountability is important and the social side of it as well. We all have different journeys but we’re all on the same journey at the same time.” Contact Tania Kent at tania. kent@weightwatchers.com.au for more details or simply pop along to one of the three weekly meetings. You can also head to weightwatchers.com.au to check out more information and deals on offer. TRIPLE TREAT FOR TIGERS Barber Shield winning captain Tim Young summed it up best – “we’ve won everything”. And North Gambier has done exactly that, adding the prestigious Barber Shield to its 2016/17 trophy haul after already claiming the T20 and One Day Cup titles. Th e most comprehensive would be the weekend victory, though, not just this season, but in living memory for nine time Barber Shield winning opener Michael Johnston. “I can’t remember bowling a team out for anywhere near that score,” Johnston said. Th e experienced allrounder leads the way in the class of 2016/17 with Barber Shield victories, closely followed by long time team mate Michael Silvy with eight. And it was Silvy, in partnership with Jake Schutz, who laid the foundation for the eventual victory. “In the middle, Schuta (Schutz) and Silvs (Silvy) were crucial, just dead batt ing and blocking and it was awesome by them and allowed Nick (McInerney) to come in and do his job,” Young (pictued right) said. And Nick McInerney certainly did that, in what has become a familiar sight in all forms of the game – his big hitt ing and his 88 run sixth wicket stand with Silvy, turning the total fr om a competitive target to a challenging run chase, which, in the end, was well beyond West Gambier. Th e Roos have now lost to the Tigers in all three fi nals this season but this one will sting. On a good deck at Frew Park, the Roos were never in it, with no batsmen even reaching double fi gures. “I can’t believe that happened,” Young said, of the stunning bowling performance. “Everything went to plan perfectly.” It would not be exaggerating to say there was not one loose ball, Young and Scott Kenny turning the screws fr om
the opening overs, and the pressure never let up. Basically every wicket fell to a catch behind the wicket – testament to the tight line and length, and good areas, the Tigers four pronged pace attack, which also included Matt and Nick McInerney, peppered throughout the 35 overs the innings lasted. It took until the fourth over to score, the eighth over for a boundary, coming from the bat of Shane Stevens, and then the only other time the ball cleared the infield was a Niall Easterbrook six late in the innings. North sent down 16 maidens in what turned out to the first title as skipper for Young, who finished with two wickets. Kenny also picked up two scalps with Matt McInerney finishing with 4/6 and Nick McInerney 2/12, including the last wicket of the match. North Gambier 1st innings 7/234 (M. Silvy 62; N. McInerney 55; M. Lewis 28) West Gambier 1st innings 42 (M. McInerney 4/6; N. McInerney 2/12; S. Kenny 2/15; T. Young 2/5)
CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF MIL LEL PRIMARY SCHOOL Mil Lel Primary School is celebrating its 150th anniversary on this weekend with old scholars and staff set to converge on the rural school to celebrate the incredible achievement. The celebrations wstart on Friday with an afternoon tea at the school from 1.30pm, coinciding with the school’s championships sprints and then Saturday is when all the reminiscing will really get underway. There is an open day from 10am-2pm, an unveiling of a mural and commemorative stone, sausage sizzle and then the Dinner at the Barn featuring Sydney based band Pirra with lead singer and former Mil Lel student Jess Beck. WHAT IS YOUR MOST VIVID MEMORY OF YOUR TIME AT MIL LEL PRIMARY SCHOOL? Mrs Hopgood was the SSO at Mil Lel and she organized for the whole school to be involved in the painting this magnificent mural on the side of the Library. This inclusion of all students really had an impact on me. I can clearly remember as a five year old being picked out of the classroom, as it was my turn to help paint something on the mural. The mural itself was also very inclusive as it had all aspects of Australia from our First Australians to modern Australia. WHAT MADE YOUR SCHOOL YEARS THERE SO SPECIAL? I realise that it’s probably not possible these days, but when I attended Mil Lel we were allowed to climb trees.
There were spray-painted marks that pointed out how high you were permitted to climb. We had pets from guinea pigs, to rabbits to tortoises in the classroom in a little pond (the lining from an old spa), and frogs. We had access to a great array of musical instruments, costumes, puppets and performing the end of year concerts at the local Mil Lel Hall was always something I looked forward to. I had so many wonderful teachers but I’d have to give a special mention to Lynn Taylor who organised a singing group one lunchtime a week, and who also included Mi Lel in the Come Out Festival resulting in us performing at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre. WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE VALUE OF ATTENDING A SMALL SCHOOL? It’s special to learn alongside people from your community and you tend to have a closer engagement with teachers and Principals. I feel there is a sense of the whole school unit looking out for one another throughout all grades, Reception to Year 7. WHEN WERE YOU A SCHOLAR AT MIL LEL PRIMARY SCHOOL? I attended Mil Lel from 1988 to 1996. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO BE PERFORMING AT THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS? It’s an honour to have been asked. I’m looking forward to sharing some original tunes with my friends and
family who attended Mi Lel Primary School and also meeting other scholars for the first time. We plan on playing some covers from each decade within 150 years, so there’ll be something for everyone. Of course there are students with memories dating back uch further than Jess and they include Valerie Monaghan who shares her thoughts as well. WHAT IS YOUR MOST VIVID MEMORY OF YOUR TIME AT MIL LEL PRIMARY SCHOOL? Being in a classroom with four classes operating at once, so that from Grade 4 onwards you listened to what the children in Grades 5, 6 & 7 were doing as well while you were doing your work. WHAT MADE YOUR SCHOOL YEARS THERE SO SPECIAL? The friends I made, and teachers with special passions for various subjects that gave me a wonderful foundation for future learning. WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS THE VALUE OF ATTENDING A SMALL SCHOOL? It was the centre of the Mil Lel community and with a small number of students everybody had a chance to play a part in that community in various different ways. WHEN WERE YOU A SCHOLAR AT MIL LEL PRIMARY SCHOOL? From 1954 until 1960 WHAT ARE YOU UP TO THESE DAYS?? I live at Robe and have a part time practice as a chartered accountant and have recently completed a professional coaching course and hope to specialise in wellness coaching. Lifestyle1 & Southern Life magazines will have even more walks down memory lane to share, as well as just how the 150th anniversary celebrations went off in future editions.
Talk to us and discover how.

TWO DAYS SPECTACULARLY ROLLED INTO ONE
FOOD, WINE AND FUN FOR TWILIGHT GARDENS
Above (left) - Pictured with the $24,000 top priced bull from Allendale are (back) Elders auctioneer Ross Milne, purchaser Nick Laucke, Laucke-Merrina, Bordertown and (kneeling) Landmark auctioneer Gordon Wood and Allendale principal Alastair Day. Above (right) - Pictured with the equal second top priced bull and top price for the Days Whiteface draft are purchaser Phoebe Farrell, Ashmore Farm, Warrnambool, her agent Nick Maddison, Elders auctioneer Ross Milne, Landmark auctioneer Gordon Wood and Days Whiteface principal Lachy Day.
The combined Allendale and Days Whiteface bull sale late last month reinforced the clear belief that commercial cattle producers have in the breeding qualities Poll Hereford cattle hold in today’s beef industry. A large crowd, including 57 registered bidders, competed very strongly throughout for the high quality line-up of 74 bulls, producing an outstanding average of $9514. In a 97% clearance, they topped at $24,000 for Lot 51, Allendale Zanzibar L131 (AI) (P), being purchased by Nick Laucke, Laucke-Merrina, Bordertown. His $24,000 price tag was a new record price for this sale, being $2000 better than the $22,000 paid in 2009 by Glenrobin Grazing, Mansfield. With Landmark auctioneer Gordon Wood calling the early shots, the sale opened strongly with a successful $13,000 bid on Allendale Chisel L7 by repeat buyers Henty-Anderson Partnership, Henty, Victoria, buying through LMB Linke Livestock. The first ten bulls averaged $11,375 but the sale remained very strong throughout. Even after 50 bulls sold the average was $10,420. The $24,000 record was a headline but the real feature was how spectacularly solid the sale was, with 50% of bulls selling for $10,000 or better, making the lead sale bulls cheaper in comparison. The 20 month old and 834kg sale topper, sired by Allendale Anzac H187 that sold in Dubbo in 2014 for $30,000, was the bull Nick Laucke came to buy, coming back a couple of times leading up to the sale to check his progress. “He’s such a beautifully balanced bull, good headed, great length and with good figures, especially for carcase traits,” Nick Laucke said. While Alastair and Jayne Day’s Allendale stud took the top price
honours, it was Lachy and Lou Day’s Days Whiteface stud that achieved the highest average. Both vendors sold 36 of their 37 bulls through the ring, with the Days Whiteface bulls averaging $9819 and the Allendale bulls averaging $9208. The overall sale average of $9514 was up $1296 on last year’s exceptionally strong result and $4297 on two years ago, reflecting the fortunes of the beef industry during that time. Days Whiteface sold 21 of its 36 bulls in the range from $10,000 to $16,000; their top price also being achieved well into the sale. Phoebe Farrell, Ashmore Farm, Warrnambool and buying through her Landmark agent Nick Madison, paid the $16,000 for Days Emerald L163 (P), sired by Days Wizard J207. Phoebe was a losing bidder on a $22,000 bull offered at Wodonga last year and was not going to miss her pick bull at this sale. Ashmore Farm runs approximately 300 Poll Hereford breeders, targeting the heavy steer markets. Allendale also received $16,000 for Allendale Gallipoli L32 (AI) (P) by Days Robin Hood H38. This impressive 22 month old and 860kg bull is a descendent from two top grand dams that have accumulated more than $300,000 worth of bull progeny. The buyer was Gary Bowyer, Robe, buying through Elders Millicent. The strength of repeat buyers in this sale was a feature, with two prominent on the next run of prices at $15,000. Jamie Beckingsale, Rodwells Mansfield has been bringing clients to this sale for as long as it has been running, two of these this year being Michael and Nerida Hanlon, Sacul Investments, Howes Creek Station, Mansfield who paid last year’s top of $17,000.
This year they purchased two bulls at $15,000 each, both from the Days Whiteface draft; Days Bruiser L70 (AI) (P) by the $90,000 Days Calibre G74 and Days Globetrotter L107 (P) by Days Elaborate J59. The latter youngster was the junior and grand champion at the 2016 Adelaide Royal Show. Jamie Beckingsale was also buying agent for PL & J O’Halloran (two bulls to $9000) and Dhuramein Investments (one at $4000). The other very strong repeat buyer was Shiloh Park, buying through Ray White Keatley’s Brian Spring, Mount Gambier. They paid $15,000 for Allendale Chisel L6 (P), an ET son of RemintalWest Game Day (ET) 74Y (Imp CAN) and full brother to lot 3 ($11,000 and Allendale’s lead bull for Wodonga in May. However principals Steve and Thea Witherow and their manager John Richardson didn’t stop there. They purchased five bulls in total at a $13,100 average, two from Allendale and three from Days Whiteface. Shiloh Park turns off weaner cattle in the late spring Mount Gambier markets and averaged just under $1300 for 130 late last year. Volume buyers are generally the key to a successful sale with bigger numbers on offer like this one, putting a strong floor in the market. Such buyers don’t come much stronger than Locky and Paddy Weir, Todd River Pastoral, Alice Springs. They were also the biggest volume buyers for the last two years with 15 bulls in both those sales and averaging $5767 last year. Buying through Elders Alice Springs they repeated those buying numbers this year, but went substantially higher, paying $10,000 three times and averaging $7733. lifestyle1.net | 35
“We try to consistently turn off heavy 300kg carcase weight cattle, so sustained growth traits are important. It has been a really good past 12 months which is allowing our cattle to bloom but we are only half way through summer yet,” Locky Weir said with an air of caution so necessary in the central Australian cattle country. Thirty-four of the 57 registered bidders were successful in purchasing at least one bull. Elders auctioneer Ross Milne described the sale as very solid. “Yet in relation to today’s cattle market there were still plenty of good value bulls as well,” he said. The vendors were extremely pleased with the result, Lachy Day saying it was an outstanding result principally built on the great support from repeat clients. Echoing that, Alastair Day said repeat clients set the scene which was great but it was also good to see some new competition as well. Agents: Landmark and Elders Auctioneers: Gordon Wood (Landmark) & Ross Milne (Elders)

CRICKET GRAND FINAL ACTION
WARRIORS CLAIM SOFTBALL SILVERWARE
Michael Silvy
What Demons would give to have the bottom of the fifth innings all over again. Leading 2-1 in what had been a tight contest for four and a half innings, Warriors ended that dig with a 6-2 lead and never looked like surrendering it until the mercy rule was invoked at the bottom of the sixth. Challenging for back to back titles, coach Cody Manning was leading the way early with some clinical outs in the field and some strong work in the batting box. After a scoreless first innings, Manning stepped up to the plate and her three bagger set up her team’s first run, after Tayla Wilson-Smith’s fly ball fell safely over the head of Erin Chaplin. Demons could have even had two runs were it not for a strong play at the home plate by Warriors when Wilson-Smith looked set make it two – a dropped fly ball at right field turning into the pivotal out at the home plate when Demons took on the thrower. Warriors found the equaliser at the bottom of the third courtesy of a Leyna Bruggemann hit to left field that scored Courtney Hansen. Much like Demons in the previous dig, it looked like Warriors was set to make it two when Claire Chaplin made good connection only to see Felicity Treacey hold onto a stunning catch at centrefield and the match was tied away at one apiece. It was Manning again who found safe territory at centrefield and she was able to score and give her side that 2-1 lead. The match looked set to be an arm wrestle as scoring again looked difficult as both teams were unable to take advantage of runners on base. That was until that fateful fifth innings with Warriors at bat. Hansen started the rout
with a safehit over Angie Williams at second and she was then replaced by quick base runner Enmerson Hann. Her pace had immediate effect as she was able to steal two bases on an errant throw - a throw that was the beginning of a litany of errors and balls falling frustratingly safe that broke open the contest. Hann got home on a dropped catch that saw Nicole Vause reach first and then Bruggemann picked up her second safehit to second with a strong shot to left field. Once bases were loaded the scoring flowed with Taylor Wilsmore falling to a super catch from Wilson-Smith at right field as she sacrificed herself to see her team take the lead. It was then that basic errors in the field started to take their toll with every error seemingly costing a run. Grace Millard eventually stopped the rot with a well timed strike out. Manning again refused to surrender with another safehit hit, this time to centrefield but that aside, Warriors were able to hold Demons at the top of the sixth and maintain that 6-2 lead. In a way the damage done at the bottom of the sixth, that saw the mercy rule eventually invoked, saw a result that belied the efforts of Demons for the best part of five innings, but it did happen as the errors that plagued the fifth innings seemed to infect the entire Demons team in the sixth. Manning tried to stem the bleeding with some fielding changes that saw her move to the pitching mound but nothing seemed to help. A combination of well placed safehits and uncharacteristic fielding errors saw Warriors continue to pile on the pain, forcing the hand of plate umpire Jenny Burston, who finally called the game – ending the torture for Demons and signalling the celebrations for Warriors – a club committed to retribution after missing last season’s title decider for this first time in living memory. Leyna Bruggemann, who was impressive on the mound, only giving up four hits for the match, and Erin Chaplin, who made some critical plays from second, as well as picking up two safehits were in contention for the grand final MVP but in the end Taylor Wilsmore secured the honour. The former South Australian Under 19 national championship winning team member was in everything – she completed five outs, had two safehits and the sacrifice fly , as well as three runs batted in. For Demons, Manning could hold her head high with her three safehits and clinical efforts in the field, especially early, while the outfield catches of Treacey and Wilson-Smith certainly ensured the result was not decided even earlier. Warriors 14 (L. Bruggemann, T. Wilsmore, E. Chaplin 2; R. Sneath, C. Chaplin, T. Pearson, K. Telford, C. Hansen) d Demons 2 (C. Manning 3; T. Wilson-Smith)

LOCAL SPORT EXCITING END TO TOUCH FOOTBALL SEASON The Mount Gambier Touch Football Association season come to a close earlier this month with the grand finals being held at Vansittart Park. Division 3 was first up with the final being between two school based teams TWC Titans (Tenison) and Grant Giants 2, which is a great sign for the longevity of the association. The first half was very even both teams scoring two tries to half time. It was in the second half that the Grant Giants, in their first season, pulled away with the help of one their biggest play makers Brodie Clark, with a trio of tries. The end result was a 6-3 win to the Grant Giants 2. Kyle Jones was the stand out with all three tries for TWC Titans, along with their captain Sarah Opie, who is a rising talent in the sport. Division 2 final was played at the same time as Division 3 with the very experienced Liquorice Allsorts taking on the new look MF Suns, who really came together on semi final night to make it through to the season decider. The first half saw Liquorice Allsorts use their experience to get to a 3-1 lead at half time and then they built
from there. Damien McMahon was their top try scorer, with three, and along with a stalwart of the competition Brad Mann led their team to a 9–4 victory. Unfortunately for the Suns their captain coach Brett Watson’s experience and Chloe Long’s play making wasn’t enough to lead the new young team to a win but they will only grow into next season. The game of night was the Division 1 final playing off for the sought after “REG” between the teams from Tiki Touch – the experienced Tiki Roos and the talented young guns of Tiki Blues. Tiki Roos started with the ball and scored with their opening set of six. There was no doubt they were out to show the youngsters who was boss and at the end of the first half they lead the Blues 7-2. But the Blues didn’t let that get them down and they played the second half like the up and coming superstars they are, outscoring the Roos but still falling short with a final score of 10–6. Almost everyone from the Roos hit the scorecard with coach and veteran Sean Fulton and gun Zoe Llewllyn getting two tries apiece. Top scorer for
the game was one half of the Johnston twins, Jarred with three, but his brother Luke, captain of the Blues, was also influential, directing play and pushing the team right to the final siren. LIMESTONE COAST BASKETBALL WELL AND TRULY ON STATE MAP The Under 14 and Under 18 SA Country Basketball Championship titles have been run and won with the Limestone Coast making a strong showing, bringing home six titles and finishing runnerup in a further five. The Mount Gambier Lakers Under 14 girls competed in division three, moving through the competition undefeated with a string of relatively comfortable victories before a nailbiting one point grand final victory over Port Lincoln. The girls defeated Broken Hill, Strathalbyn, Port Pirie, Willunga & Districts, Murray Bridge and Millicent on the way to the title decider and eventual championship. It was equally exciting when the Mount Gamier Lakers Under 14 boys faced off in the division one title decider. Having lost to their grand final opponent Mildura by 21 points in the pool matches, the young Lakers dug deep to secure a one point title victory. On the way to the SA Country championship, the Lakers boys defeated Millicent, Riverland, Strathalbyn and Port Augusta before claiming the shock title in the tense decider. Things were much more comfortable for the Lakers Under 18 women who enjoyed a 17 point title decider win after going through the weekend tournament undefeated. Great Southern, Strathalbyn, Yorke Peninsula, who also lost the title decider against the star studded Lakers line-up and Millicent all fell by the wayside as the Lakers girls easily accounted for most opposition – a nine point pool match win over grand final opponent Yorke Peninsula the closest contest in a weekend that saw mainly 30
point plus margins. The fourth title came courtesy of Keith, who won the Under 14 boys division five SA Country Basketball Championship with a tough two point victory over Kangaroo Island. Millicent also had a boys team competing in this division. Bordertown got the job done in the Under 14 girls division two competition, defeating fellow South East team Naracoorte in the title decider, 29-22. In Under 18 boys division three action, the title decider was an all Limestone Coast affair with Mount Gambier claiming the title with a 13 point victory over Bordertown. In the Under 14 girls division one competition, the Millicent Magic girls started with a loss to Eastern Hills, a result they easily rectified later in the competition, with their only other losses coming against Whyalla – a one point loss in the pool matches and another agonising two point loss in the title decider. Naracoorte’s Under 18 boys made the division one title decider but went down to Mildura, a team that also had their measure in the pool matches. Mount Gambier Lakers also had an Under 14 division one girls team competing, with the girls defeating Yorke Peninsula, Barossa Valley and Port Augusta along the way before bowing out to eventual runner-up Millicent at the quarter final stage. Both Mount Gambier and Millicent had teams competing in the division two under 14 boys competition with both bowing out at quarter final stage, while Naracoorte had a division one Under 14 boys team that made it all the way to semi final stage, before losing to Mildura,
in the grade that saw Mount Gambier take the championship. Mount Gambier also had a division four Under 14 boys team that made it through to the semi final stage. Millicent’s under 14 division three girls made it to the second round of the finals as well, losing to eventual titleholders Mount Gambier. In Under 14 girls division four action, Naracoorte made it through to the semi finals, while in division five Under 14 girls action, Millicent finished runner-up. In Under 18 boys division two action, Millicent bowed out at the quarter final stage, while in the Under 18 girls division four competition, Naracoorte made it to the semi finals.

LAKE BONNEY SHOOT WINNERS Lake Bonney Sporting Clays held the Fennell Forestry 50 target shoot earlier this month. Course setters delivered a challenging combination of targets spaced out across the grounds allowing for the optional flush shoot to run in front of the clubrooms. High Gun Chris Wright had to work hard for the top position competing in a shoot off with A grade shooter Jeremy Hellyer, a close result kept the spectators entertained at the end of the day. A number of participants took advantage of the chance to practice their skills at the Flush stand, including representatives from Fennell Forestry, Barry Fennell and Scott O’Dea, who enjoyed the challenge. Once again it was great to see some new faces, including a couple of international visitors from Canada, join the 55 shooters on the day. The Fennell Forestry team enjoyed the day even though some of the targets were quiet tricky to smash. Barry Fennell, visiting Canadian Steve Heeny and Scott O’Dea all finished with scores similar to some of the regular competitors, President Herb Whitehead presented each Clays Only shooter with a Lake Bonney glass thanking them for supporting the club and participating on the day. Mark Fabris took home first in AA from Malcolm Whitehead and Bruce Parker, while Jeremy Hellyer finished on top in A grade well ahead of John Hill and Allan Cowin, consistent scores likes these will see Jeremy move up into AA in the near future. Al Scheidl was a clear winner of the B grade while a countback decided second and third. Romain Devaud taking home second and Gary Dangerfield, third. Russell Fisk happily accepted first in C grade from boss, Barry Fennell, eighty six year old life member Colin Whitehead received the prize for second, reminding the crowd that you are never too old to shoot. Newcomer Doug Rhodes took home third on the day. The Veterans and Super Veterans competition continues to be tightly contested seeing a battle between the two Waynes in Vets and the Peters in Super Vets. This week young Wayne Evans finished ahead of Wayne Gurney and Neville Kent, while Greg Todd showed Peter Caskey and Peter Klieve that he is still the one to beat. Meagan Millard had a great day out shooting 33/50 on a hard course, Vicki Fabris was second and Renae Hunt happily accepted her first prize ever
for third. Declan Wright and Ethan Hellyer were the only young shooters on the day and both spoke very well when presented with their prizes, these are going to be two young men to watch in the future. The next event at Lake Bonney was at the weekend, followed by the South East Branch’s 60 target English Sporting at Burrungule on March 26.
