IMPROVING YOUR FARMING LAND Kemps Krushers is a local family owned and operated business servicing rural land in the South East South Australia and Western Victoria areas, with furthers areas available upon discussion. Kemps Fendt 936 Vario tractor is equipped with their state of the art FAE MTH 225 Rock Crusher. This Fendt is the perfect tractor for the work as it has a stepless vario transmission which means it can operate from speeds

of 0.02 to 55kmh without any gear changes. Kemps FAE MTH Rock Crusher is a top of the line machine that can go from depths of 150mm to an impressive 500mm. Crushing stones, solid reef and shredding large tree stump plantations. Converting unproductive paddocks to prime farming land. The MTH also means there is no longer a need for traditional deep ripping with a dozer anymore. Garry has been on the family farm

his whole life and four years ago took over the management and running of the farm. After years of frustration with the amount of rock on the property and unable to work it to its full potential the idea developed. Living in the region, Garry saw a huge potential for a machine of its kind and hopes to work with local farmers towards improving their properties. These improvements are not just a first year expense or outlay, they’re an improvement that will impact your farming business and potential for the life of your property. Visit their website www. kempskrushers.com.au and watch their own included videos to see what Kemps machines can do for your property.

View Kemps machinery at the SE Lucindale Field Days on the 17th and 18th of March. Their Fendt tractor and FAE MTH 225 Rock Crusher will be located at the FAE site number 629. The Kemp family will also be visiting the field days and will be available via appointment on 0438 816 844 or kempskrushers@gmail.com KEMPS KRUSHERS PO Box 3132 Mount Gambier SA 5290 Ph: 0438 816 844 kempskrushers@gmail.com www.kempskrushers.com.au Find us on facebook

BORDERLINE CELEBRATES 60 YEARS It was a night of racing demonstrations but the main thing was it went ahead. After a couple

of disappointing rain affected major meetings this season, the Borderline Speedway was able to celebrate its

60th anniversary in style. The pits were teaming with aficionados, eager to check out the vehicles from the past, as more than 50 cars converged on the Glenburnie track. And there were plenty of old timers ready to share their memories, which for many of them span a large portion of the six decades the Borderline has hosted racing. The weekend’s celebrations were just about that – celebrating. The

meeting was all demonstration events with classical hot rods, Sportsman, TQs, Formula 500, super modified, which were the predecessors to the sprintcar, and even some sprintcars, considering most of the region’s top sprintcar drivers were away competing. One of the highlights was Lindsay Bear’s old sedan making a return to the Borderline track. “Everyone really enjoyed themselves,” club president

Cary Jennings said. “It was great to see so many cars turn up and people were asking what we were going to do next year which is great.” Offering free entry to children and women also proved a master stroke. “There were heaps more ladies there than we usually see, so that really worked well,” Cary said. And while celebrations were going on at the Borderline Speedway, club members were scattered around Australia representing the club with pride. In form street stock star Mark Jennings lapped all but the second placed car in his victory at Horsham, while Glen Sutherland headed to Murray Bridge to contest the SA Sprintcar Title, finishing eight in the A Main. Anthony Beare was in Warrnambool for a street stock Go=Switch-Go event, which sees cars race 15 laps one way and then reverse it for the next 15. Beare finished second in a race meeting where the feature racing was the 2017 Australian Late Model Titles, where Stuart Hill showed some good form . In the end, it was newly crowned Australian Junior Sedan Champion Angus Hollis, from Portland, and a regular at the Borderline, that made his mark, taking out the prestigious Neville Pike Cup. Steve Lines was in Western Australia, competing in a couple of rounds of World Series Sprintcars, finishing ninth on Friday night and sixth in Saturday night’s main race. LEARN TO SWIM NUMBERS AT RECORD HIGH The Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre has become the city’s number one after-school hotspot, with a major jump in the number of swimmers now taking weekly lessons at the facility. A record 1026 children, aged from six months through to 15 years, are enrolled in learn-to-swim programs this term, with approximately 10 adults also taking the plunge. Aquatic centre manager Peter Collins said the centre has recorded 15 years of consecutive growth in the lesson program. “We’ve gone from 154 enrolments back in 2002 to more than a thousand this term, and we put the continual growth down to increased community awareness combined with a vibrant program run by highly trained instructors,” he said. The centre’s woodchip-powered pool heating system is also being credited for the spike in swimmer numbers. In 2014, the City of Mount Gambier became the first council in Australia to install a biomass Chanceline Mbavu

boiler fuelled by the local forestry industry. The cost-effective system heats the Olympic pool to an optimal 28 degrees Celsius, and also maintains the infant pool at a consistent 34 degrees. “Parents used to struggle trying to keep young children in the pool as they would get cold, but we now have up to 100 children aged between 6 months and two years taking lessons – and we now have difficulty getting them out of the water at the end of their session, which is just fantastic,” Mr Collins said. There is currently 36 staff overseeing the out-of-school hours swimming lesson program, with each instructor receiving external professional training and development in the lead-up to the opening of the 2016/17 swimming season. “I am amazed at the level of initiative, motivation and energy that has been displayed by the instructors in charge over the past decade to continually evolve the program and Michael Mutombo

keep it at the forefront of advances in learning in an aquatic environment,” said Mr Collins. An additional seven instructors are involved in the centre’s daytime program for schools, which has reached capacity. “We are now ‘full’ in that every weekday that we are open, we have bookings for 23 schools from around the district from 9am to 3pm,” Mr Collins said. Students from Mount Gambier High School and North Gambier Primary School’s New Arrivals Program are among those taking part in lessons being held during Term 1 this year, and have been embracing the opportunity to learn to swim or improve their skills in their new home. Murphy Proud began working as an assistant instructor at Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre when she was a Year 10 student at Mount Gambier High School. She completed training to become a fully accredited AUSTSWIM teacher, and the 18 year old now works at the

pool most days in between studying to become a vet nurse. “It has worked out really well as I can do the swimming all summer, and then focus on my prac work as part of my vet studies during winter,” she said. Last year, Murphy pursued an opportunity to apply her skills further afield, heading to the United States for three months to work at an all-girls summer camp in Maine. “I was encouraged to go by another local instructor who had done something similar, and I absolutely loved it,” she said. Mr Collins said Murphy was one of four recent staff members to have used their skills to work abroad during the winter months. “They’re gaining lifelong skills during the process of working at this facility, usually to help pay for a tertiary education, and we have also seen an additional 31 of our staff take the skills they have gained further afield to work around Australia,” he said.

Don’t forget that this year’s Community Clean Up Australia Day is this Sunday. Get your friends and family together and help make Mount Gambier clean and green. Every year since 1990, hundreds of Australians roll up their sleeves and get stuck in and clean up their local schools, parks, sporting grounds, road sides and city centre areas by collecting and removing rubbish. If people have a few minutes available on the day it all counts toward the big clean up. The City of Mount Gambier wishes to encourage sporting clubs, families, individuals and groups to bring their own gloves and participate in the clean up with their local community. The City of Mount Gambier has once again given support to this valuable initiative and is providing the following information to encourage members of our community to participate. Central Marshalling area: Volunteer information and registration desk at the Cave Gardens. BBQ lunch provided from noon in the Cave Gardens for all volunteers. 10am-12noon. Clean Up Sites: Council will lead the clean up of the Cave Gardens and surrounding CBD district. Community groups will be leading sites at the Valley Lakes including surrounds and lookouts and various roadside clean ups. A full list of sites is available at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au. Volunteers: Please register online at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org. au and select your preferred location. Alternatively you can register on the day with the site supervisor at the Cave Gardens at anytime between 10am-12noon. Registration is a requirement by Clean Up Australia. Bring your own gloves. MILLICENT SHOPPING HOURS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Wattle Range residents are being urged to have their say about the future of shop trading hours in Millicent. Currently, trading hours at a number of retail outlets in Millicent are restricted by law. Consultation with the community by the Wattle Range Council on the possible deregulation of shop trading hours will begin with a survey being mailed out soon to Millicent residents who are listed on the State electoral role. Council is also calling for written submissions from residents outside of Millicent who are Millicent business owners or shop assistants working in the town. The results of the survey along with any additional comments or feedback received through formal written submissions, will be included in the report compiled for council consideration to assist the elected members in making an informed decision on the whether it should recommend to the Minister to deregulate the town’s trading hours. “It is important that council is thorough in its engagement with the community on the issue of shop trading hours in Millicent,” council’s chief executive officer Ben Gower said. “All affected parties will be given the opportunity to express their views regarding any proposal to abolish or retain regulated shop trading hours, prior to Council making any recommendation to the Minister.” Submissions need to be received by Council by 5 pm on Monday, March 27, 2017. Submissions must be in writing and need to include contact details and a signature. They should be marked “Millicent Shop Trading Hours” and must be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Wattle Range Council, PO Box 27, Millicent SA 5280. Alternatively submissions can be forwarded by email to council@ wattlerange.sa.gov.au

LOUISE ADAMS TO HEADLINE 2017 BUSINESS AWARDS The search is on for the 2017 Glenelg Shire Business of the Year. Nominations are now open for the annual Business and Tourism Awards, proudly supported by principal sponsor the Ace Radio network, which cover nine business and tourism categories, two individual categories and a heritage award. Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the coveted award program was an opportunity to acknowledge hard working business owners, tourism operators and their loyal employees who keep the shire’s economy thriving. The award winners will be recognised at a gala dinner at the Portland Golf Club on Friday, April

28 April, featuring X-Factor runner-up Louise Adams, who will launch a new cross border music tourism initiative at the event. Cr Rank said council had appointed three independent judges who would provide up to 90 minute mentoring sessions with all award entrants. Among the judges is career banker David McCutcheon. who has worked with small business in a number of Australia’s leading banks; Trevor Manson. a retailer with more than 40 years experience across a range of areas including senior management; and Clinton Bugg. a business consultant who specialises in people, processes and technology to build business outcomes. “Council is extremely excited to offer each of this year’s entrants with a one-on-one mentoring session to ensure their business is reaching its full potential,” Cr Rank said. “Last year’s renewed competition was an overwhelming success proving our shire is passionate about continuing to build our business and tourism economies to ensure we are a major player in not only regional Victoria, but the state and nation’s economies.” Cr Rank thanked generous local business operators and associations, including major sponsors Portland Aluminium and Glass and Keppel Prince, for their

ongoing support. “Council is proud to partner with the Ace Radio network, our principal sponsor, whose talented radio hosts will be our award hosts on the evening – just another way we will be showcasing the talented professionals working in our region,” she said. “It is exciting to also have highly acclaimed artist Louise Adams, who lives in our backyard, share her new cross-border music tourism initiative which aims to put the South West and South East on the performance map.” To learn more, or to apply for the 2017 Glenelg Shire Business and Tourism awards visit www.glenelg. vic.gov/BusinessAwards. Advertorial • Collins Court Butchers

KING OF THE SAUSAGE Every butcher thinks they make the best sausages but Mick Lamond and the team at Collins Court Butchers can stake a genuine claim to creating the best pork sausages in South Australia and the second best in Australia. Earlier this month the Australian Meat Industry Council’s Sausage King Competition saw the national winner awarded and the South East continued its strong showing at the awards with Mount Gambier’s Collins Court Butchers taking second place in the traditional pork sausage category. They also finished second at the State competition with their beef and chicken sausages. “It shows the consistency of our product, the flavour and the quality of the meat we use in our sausages pays off,” Collins Court Butcher owner Mick said. “Every butcher thinks they make the best sausages but it is good to enter these industry competitions and see how you really stack up.” Collins Court Butchers’ focus on the traditional sausages, as well as the gourmet products that have been in vogue for a few years, is justified by the market. “We were selling about 10kilgrams of pork sausages a week,” Mick said. “But when the news got out about our State win, it went up to 30-40kg and we think the national win will see that rise again.” Collins Court first took out the regional awards before heading

to the State finals and then earning their place in the national competition. Mick has been in the industry for 18 years, owning his own business for more than a decade. “It’s a team effort,” he said. “I have five staff working with me here every day and we work well as a team and whatever we achieve is a team effort.” Customer service and using locally sourced product are the other cornerstones to the Collins Court Butcher business. “Customer service is the most important thing,” Mick said. “We are always trying to help our customers and we will source anything for them or do anything for them that we can.” Collins Court Butchers sources its lamb from Mount Schank and Moorak producers and also chases its beef locally. “We want to support local and use local wherever we can.”

BROTHERS ARE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS When it comes to young kids developing an obsession with a sport, wrestling is not often one of the more talked about passions but for brothers Nick and Travis Cleves it has been about wrestling for as long as they can remember. “We started watching wrestling when we were kids,” Travis said. “Nick went to the local video shop and used to hire VHS wrestling videos. We used to sit around and watch them and we really got into it - the theatrics of it all.” And it wasn’t long before the brothers were looking to emulate the moves they were watching. “We used to try them out on the trampoline.” So began the evolution from young fans to competing athletes. “We got our friends around, created characters and put on shows.” Little did they know a decade down the track, it would be such a significant part of their lives. Working in wrestling promotion with EPW Adelaide, the opportunity arose for Nick to step out from behind the scenes to being part of the show when Wrestle Rampage allowed him to audition. “After that, they decided I could train with them and six months later I was in my first show,” he said. What people don’t realise is the intensity of a wrestling career and just what is required of what are elite athletes, first, and performers, second. “The two day try outs were so intense,” Nick said. “It is all about cardio, strength and conditioning.” “A lot of guys that get cut think it’s going to be a lot easier than it is – it really is intense,” Travis said. Fortunately for the Cleves brothers, fitness has always been a huge part of their lives and along with their wrestling commitments, both are qualified personal trainers, running their own personal training studio for the past four years at Glenelg. “Both our parents went to the gym and we often went along with them when we were little.” Travis said. “And we did the usual basketball, football and cricket.”

lifestyle1.net | 26

Martial arts was also part of their childhood, with Nick even competing at a State Championships. “I do remember going to the gym with mum and really wanting to join in the class,” Travis said. And now, it’s all about the training for both brothers. “We train maybe four times a week with the wrestling and then we would do weight training another five times,” Travis said. “You really do need to be dedicated.” There is also the time needed to perfect the routines and that’s another couple of hours. The wrestling has seen Nick and Travis travel extensively, from Perth to Newcastle, and Sydney and Melbourne, and heading international is set to be on the agenda with opportunities in the United States and Japan. “I’ve already been to Canada,” Nick said. “The friendships we develop with people from around Australia is amazing. We never would have through we would

have made so many friends through wrestling.” The sport has changed a lot over time as well. “It used to be rated MA15+ but it’s now PG and aimed a lot more at a family audience and for kids,” Nick said. The WWE has also expanded and runs its own network along the lines of Netflix – a subscription based service – and a long cry from the VHS days in Mount Gambier when Nick and Travis were first exposed to a sport that has become their livelihood. A livelihood that they are hoping will only expand as they work hard to secure a spot on a roster on a show like 205 Live - a live professional wrestling WWE Network series. The duo has every reason to believe they are on the right track after picking up an invite last December to a WWE recruitment in Melbourne, where only the best prospects in Australian wrestling were afforded the opportunity. “There were 22 invited to the try out and it was great to be selected,” Nick said. “It was a chance to make some good contacts and they do think what we do is marketable. We also got a chance to watch their show and how it’s put together and that was great as well.” The feedback the Cleves duo received was extremely positive and it also showed just where Australian wrestling sits on the world stage. “The quality of Australian wrestling is as good as it’s ever been,” Travis said. “There is a massive talent pool now and it’s a testament to how hard everyone is working.” Who knew, a childhood spent settling arguments over food with wrestling, would lead to such an exciting career. “The loser was the first one to tap out and it Nick won a lot,” Travis said. Travis and Nick Cleves perform under the banner of Jett and Nick Armstrong.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - REALITY CHECK 2... By ROBBIE TANSEL I think I’ve finally worked out the attraction of reality television. As many of you are aware, I have an intense dislike of reality television. I think it’s silly. I don’t care if you’re a celebrity. I don’t care about how you’ve renovated a house. I have absolutely no interest in watching a television show about people watching television shows. So why do people watch reality television when they could watch a fantastic episode of NCIS? I think people now spend so much time interacting with people via digital technology of one kind or another, it is now a novelty to see people socialising face to face or performing everyday activities. We spend so much time looking at little screens, talking to people via text message and social media, that we find it amazing seeing

someone talking to another person. This is particularly alarming considering that reality television has absolutely no resemblance to actual reality. The things on reality television aren’t real. I read recently about the upcoming Real Housewives of Sydney. I mean, they’ve got real in the title of their show so it must be reality, right? Most of them have jobs and businesses for starters. I thought a housewife was a married woman whose main occupation was caring for her family, managing household affairs, and doing housework. With very little reading I found that most of them actually own businesses or have high profile jobs. You’d think the wife part of housewife, indicating that someone is married, should be the absolute minimum we’d expect of the person.

Some of the stars of Real Housewives of Sydney aren’t even married. Well you won’t get me watching it. We’ve talked before about shows with Celebrity in the title. Again, the very least we should be expecting of I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here is celebrities. Let’s look at the celebrities they are presenting us. Ash Pollard : never heard of her. Carson Kressley : was a celebrity ten to fifteen years ago. Casey Donovan : unless she’s Jason Donovan’s daughter I’ve got no idea who she is. Dane Swan : celebrity. I’ll give you that one. Keira Maguire : who? Kris Smith : not only do I not know, I just don’t care. Jay Laga’aia : he’s been on Play School so he’s a celebrity to four year olds. The show is not called, “I’m A Celebrity to Four Year Olds, Get Me Out of Here. Lisa Curry : she is not a celebrity unless you have a time machine that can take you back to 1982. Nat Bassingthwaighte : let’s not even worry about whether she’s a celebrity or not (she’s not.) It’s just ridiculous having a first name with three letters and a surname with 38 letters. Nazeem Hussain : I just hope for everyone’s sake that

Donald Trump doesn’t find out he’s in the jungle. Steve Price : actually one of the few people on the show I’ve heard of. Tegan Martin : I’ve got no idea. I could Google it but why would I waste thirty seconds of my life? Tom Arnold : he’s only well known because he was married to someone famous. Celebrity is not contagious. You can’t catch it off your wife. Tzipora Malkah : previously known (only by her closest family I’m guessing because I’ve never heard of her) as Kate Fischer. My concern with some of these celebrity shows is that some of the contestants are now celebrities on a reality television show due to previously being a contestant on a reality show. One of the contestants was famous for being on a reality show, then being on a celebrity

reality show and now she’s on another celebrity reality show. I’m pretty sure that’s called the Kardashian Hilton syndrome. I really shouldn’t have to watch the show as a way of making the celebrity part of the premise true. Shouldn’t they be a celebrity before they go on the show, not have the show make them well known? Well moderately well known, and only to people who are too lazy to turn the television to something that is watchable. It’s fair to say I’m tired tonight. If you’d like to help me become a celebrity, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

FEBRUARY SHOOT IN TOUGH CONDITIONS Lake Bonney Sporting Clays hosted its monthly competition on Sunday, February 19. A wet and windy start to the day saw nominations numbers down this week with only 47 shooter turning out for the event. Once again the hard working course setting team presented a competitive course. The windy conditions creating some challenges for Shooters throughout the day. The 50 target event was handicapped enabling competitors to add their handicap to the total at the end of each round, resulting in some different winners at the end of the day. Millicent Tyre Centre’s Grant Bowden enjoyed the day out with his family and was on hand at the end of the day to present prizes to the winners. There were a few regular shooters missing on Sunday due to the SA Duck Season opening on Saturday, however those who did attend had plenty of praise for the committee and its team for running another quality event. Tony Sellars managed to smash all five of the Flash Five targets taking home the cash for this week. Including handicaps in the scoring made for an interesting time in the noms hut with a number of grades needing a count back to decide the outcome, on days like these the last few targets shot can be the most important. Winners in AA and A grade were easily decided with some great scores shot, many of these shooters have very small handicaps so they don’t see a lot of change to their final scores. Third in B

grade was won by Roman Devaud after checking score cards to find he had finished his last round well. Andamooka club member Mark Moss enjoyed visiting the club and went home with first over Cliff Lee for his efforts. Ian Lister edged in front of Michael Gates to take home second, with Michael’s friendly rival Charles Wallis very happy with first. Bec Kober was able to combine her handicap with some great shooting in her second round to win second from Allanah Bowden and Janette Densley first. Vets and Super Vets saw the usual contenders awarded the prizes, Peter Klieve was pleased with his Collins Court Butchers BBQ pack for first over Greg Todd and Bill Morrison. Mason Patzel and sub/ junior Ethan Hellyer proved that they are committed competitors in their grades. Lake Bonney’s next shoot will be the Fennel Forestry 50 Target on March 5.

LOCAL SPORT VICTORIAN RAIDERS FAVOURED TO TAKE OUT GOLD CUP If you believe the experts, the 2017 Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup is headed to Victoria with either driver/ trainer Matt Craven, from Terang, or Heywood trainer Kevin Brough set to claim the silverware. Vying for a $12,000 prize purse, Brough’s Just Wantano was impressive in heat one just over week ago, as Jason Lee piloted the highly favoured mare, in what was clearly the fastest heat of the night. But it is hard to quantify the run of heat two winner Kimani, for Craven, as he led from the 300metre mark of the race and was never seriously challenged. The two will start favourites but it is a field Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club president Phil Wood has described as one of the strongest in memory. “It is definitely the strongest cup final we have had for a long time,” Wood said. “Just Wantano and Kimani will be favourites but there are a lot of horses that are a real big show – this field has a lot of depth.” Wood singled out Craven’s second runner, Liv Lavish, as one of those that could upset the favourites, as well as the Glynn family’s Samara Sky and the Barry Finnis trained Ocean’s Predator, which will be driven by son Jayson. Ocean’s Predator finished sixth in the Just Wantano heat but made a meal of the start and finished strongly to show there is some hope the gold cup could stay in South Australia. The 2016/17 season has been plagued by poor weather but officials are hopeful the 2017 Gold Cup, this Saturday night, at Greenwald Paceway, will be the exception and that it will draw in the crowds. Children’s entertainment, plenty of on course catering and the appearance of harness racing legend Come On Frank, will all add to the carnival atmosphere of the club’s premier event. Gates open 4pm with racing usually starting around an hour after that.

NO SIMS SHIELD SEMI FINAL RESULTS AVAILABLE This weekend’s grand final will be between Millicent & North Gambier. Above - Ben Thiel achieved the rare feat of a century in O’Donoghue Shield cricket earlier this season. Given the teenagers in that grade have to retire on 40 and can only return to the crease if everyone else has been dismissed, it was a stellar effort from the young Mil Lel bat. Unfortunately for Ben, his team lost its semi final at the weekend. Far left - Burdon Shield champions - Millicent. Millicent batted first and made 6/196 on the back of a chanceless 111 from Jayden Grosser (pictured left). In reply, Tatiara made 9/132 with the best of the bowlers being Jack Harding with 2/13 and Jack Tapfield who took 2/9 to go with his 24 with the bat. The victorious Millicent team - (back row from left) Jed Matthews, Jack Muhovics, Jack Harding, Campbell Watts, Hugh Armfield, Will Wiseman & David Willis (coach) and (front row from left) - Max Telfer, Harry Willis, Jayden Grosser(captain), Jack Tapfield & Tom Ferguson.
