MAC’S HOTEL - THE SECRET IS OUT

MOUNT GAMBIER HARNESS RACING CLUB GOLD CUP HEATS GREENWALD PACEWAY, MOUNT GAMBIER February 19

AN EVENING OF WOMEN’S WELL BEING Mac’s Hotel has been a hive of activity in recent weeks and it all surrounded an exciting new innovation at the popular Mount Gambier watering hole. Earlier this month, the hotel’s newest entertainment space ‘The Secret Garden’ was unveiled, launched on Friday, February 3, with a Sneak Peek Party. Mac’s stunning outdoor space, complete with a sandpit for dancing, is known as the Secret Garden, with entry through the hotel’s popular Cider Bar and it aims to give local revellers a new look space to enjoy with a Fringe Festival feel. And the six week teaser at the end of this summer couldn’t be better timed with Mount Gambier set to experience all the Fringe Festival has to offer, from February 24, right on our doorstep. “We just wanted to give people a taste,” Mac’s Hotel manager Adam Nicholls said. “It will then be back bigger and better next

summer.” The six week Secret Garden teaser campaign sees the outdoor space open Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm until close and on Sundays, from 12noon until around 9pm. And there are some special events planned for the Secret Garden’s opening six weeks with a Coonawarra Wine Festival on Friday, February 17, incorporating tastings of the latest releases from DiGiorgio Wines; Patrick of Coonawarra and Majella Wines, paired with some delicious tasting platters, featuring regional produce. Families are also in focus for Mac’s Hotel’s Secret Garden with a Family Fun Day on Sunday, February 26, complete with face painting, jumping castle, junior disco and sandcastle competitions. “The day is all about kids enjoying themselves,” Adam said. “We want to make it as fun as possible for the whole family.” The hotel’s RnB Nights also return and will

call the Secret Garden home on Friday, March 3, and then the six week program rounds out with a Mac’s Hotel staple – the Paint Party – on Sunday, March 12, which is Adelaide Cup weekend. “Both the RnB nights and the paint parties are always popular so we wanted to make sure they were part of the six weeks we had to show off the new garden area,” Adam said. Full of eclectic furniture and shrouded in greenery, the Secret Garden has an artificial turf floor with the sandpit being promoted as a place to “kick off your heels and dance”. “We just wanted to bring a different experience to Mount Gambier,” Adam said. “It will be event based and festival based.” Mac’s Hotel also has another feather in its cap, besides the new Secret Garden, they are also the first and only regional Corona Spiritual Home in Australia. Be sure to head in and experience the difference at Mac’s Hotel.

BROTHERS INSPIRE SONGSTRESS TO PURSUE HER DREAM It all started with a love of singing for Port MacDonnell’s Maddy Murdoch but over the years, acting and, even more belatedly, dancing have become, not just part of her repertoire, but part of her overall love of performing. It has seen the 2016 Grant Council Young Citizen of the Year secure a place in the prestigious Fed University musical theatre course in Ballarat. Much like fellow first year, Georgia Latchford, from Mount Gambier, Maddy auditioned for one of the highly coveted positions in the Ballarat course without high expectations, having only been studying dancing for 12 months, but the duo will now be classmates. Maddy spent her gap year, where she honed her hospitality skills at Collars & Cuffs, adding dance to her skill set under Tamara Kovaleff, at Envie Dance Studio. “That (dancing) was really my downfall,” Maddy said. “I’d done a little bit before but this was really my first proper training. It was all about preparing for my audition.” Maddy was also accepted into the single stream acting course but decided developing her skills as a triple threat and having more stings to her bow was the smartest way forward. “I figured I could always fall back on acting if I need,” Maddy said. “But I really do love musical theatre so I’m excited to be able to giving this a go. I honestly thought I might have go back and audition again next year so to be accepted has been amazing. Musical theatre has been my main passion, my

primary passion but I just wasn’t sure if my skills were as developed as they needed to be to get in to the course. I thought my lack of dance experience would be more of a problem.” Maddy’s audition process was even more rigorous than Georgia’s because she was applying for both the acting and musical theatre strains of Fed University – she had two monologues to prepare, as well as the two songs, the call back to dance and the improvisation work. “I was definitely happy with how I performed at the auditions so I knew I had given it my best even if I didn’t get in.” Maddy was so sure she would have to wait perhaps another year before gaining entry into the Ballarat course, she had already paid up her bond for accommodation in Melbourne, where she has decided to resettle for tertiary study through Melbourne University. But now, that little girl who loved singing from the age of five, is set to forge a career on the stage. “When I was five years old I wanted to be a rock star, then a pop star and then just a singer, I went around and around,” Maddy said. “It was only in high school that I started to get interested in musical theatre.” She secured the lead role in her school musical, Copacabana, and fell in love with musical theatre. Workshops with highly acclaimed cabaret performer Michael Griffiths saw Maddy develop that side of her performing, culminating in a performance at the

Geelong, heading into his sixth season with the Cats, while Brodie was on the St Kilda list and is still playing football in Melbourne. “I definitely looked to my brothers because they were small town kids like me and they made something of their passion and so I knew there was no reason why I couldn’t,” Maddy said. “There was some sibling rivalry, too.” She is also looking forward to living closer to her brothers with Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne now the epicentre of the Murdoch family. Maddy admits, the counterbalance to the newfound close proximity to her brothers, is the leaving behind of school friends. “We are all going our separate ways and you know some of those friendships will slowly slip away.” Maddy is looking forward to making new friends though, as this next chapter in her life begins – a chapter that has already been helped by Mikaela Waters, a current alumni at Fed University, who has been a godsend for South East based students looking to transition. Maddy is set to stay on campus and is looking forward to this new adventure. “I just really want to push myself in this new course,” she said. “I want to lift the level of my dancing tenfold.” Adelaide Cabaret Festival, as well as some training through Ovation Centre of Performing Arts. Maddy’s vocal training has been under the guidance of Jodi Swiggs, at Phoenix Studios, in Mount Gambier. While Maddy admits seeing local

talent including Cristina d’Agostino and Euan Doidge make their mark on the national musical theatre scene, it is her brothers, footballers Jordan and Brodie, that have provide the most inspiration to pursue her passion. Jordan is an AFL footballer with

COASTAL CONNECTIONS PROGRAM CONTINUES TO IMPRESS Exploring, learning, and good old fashioned summer fun were the focus for more than 1000 locals and

visitors attending Coastal Connections activities across the South East in January. A spectacular coastline and

perfect summery conditions provided an ideal setting for more than 70 events held at coastal townships from Port MacDonnell to Kingston. Natural Resources South East Coast and Marine Officer Elly Schultz said this year’s event successfully showcased local flora, fauna and coastal landscapes. “We had so much fun interacting with locals and visitors during the two week program,” Ms Schultz said. “From snorkelling and sand sculpting to birdwatching and bush tucker tours, there was something for everyone. One participant commented that they were still learning new things about their area, at age 72!” Collaboration between local groups including Friends of Shorebirds SE, Nature Glenelg Trust, Birdlife South East SA, Kingston Veterinary Clinic, Millicent Veterinary Clinic, and local

councils helped to deliver the action packed program. “We received some great feedback, including that the program was a lovely opportunity to learn in the natural environment. It’s encouraging to hear how much people value the coast,” Ms Schultz said. “We hope everyone left feeling inspired to appreciate and protect our region’s amazing coast.” Coastal Connections is supported by Natural Resources South East and the Limestone Coast Local Government Association through funding from the Australian Government. For information about next year’s Coastal Connections program, contact Natural Resources South East on (08)8735 1177 or email eloise.schultz@sa.gov.au. Programs will be available in early December.

POWERFUL SHOW

Country Arts SA is kicking off the month long Fringe celebrations in Mount Gambier with a suite of world class premiere shows in one jampacked weekend. For one exclusive show only Larissa McGowan’s Mortal Condition will blast the festival to the stratosphere. Mortal Condition, by distinctive South Australian choreographer Larissa McGowan, will premiere in the city on February 25, mixing stunningly synchronized choreography with martial arts and gaming references. Inspired by Mike Patton’s (Faith No More) groundbreaking album Adult Themes for Voice and from observing gamers play for hours on end, McGowan and her dancers present an impressive rapidfire performance. Mount Gambier last viewed Larissa’s highly-reviewed work Fanatic as part of Sydney Dance Company’s De Novo and has been up close and personal with her dance jungle gym through Country Arts SA’s DanceXtend program. Mortal Condition will showcase Larissa’s trademark style of blending powerful movement with wit and humour. She will be joined on stage by UK Critic Circle award-winning dancer Kialea Nadine Williams and ex-Sydney Dance Company dancer Thomas Bradley. Larissa said Part 1 of Mortal Condition starts with the guttural and vocal gymnastics of Mike Patton’s experimental album. “Extraordinary human yet violent sounds underpin an expressive and wordless raw dialogue between two bodies,” she said. “In direct contrast Part II uses the personas of video game characters to explore virtual worlds where there are norules. With DJ Tr!p’s score inspired by the cinematic explosions of adventure, Mortal Condition, takes the real and raw emotion of being human and transplants it into a very made up world of video games.” Country Arts SA is presenting Mortal Condition, Our Corka Bubs, Eyes and We Are the World as part of Mount Gambier Fringe during Feb 23-26. For all Country Arts SA Mount Gambier Fringe details go to www. countryarts.org.au.

MOORAK TEENAGER SET TO LEND A HELPING HAND

SAVE OUR WILDLIFE

Emily Hanel has a well worn passport, having travelled extensively throughout Europe, including Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, having also spent some time at boarding school in the south of England. The 14 year old is set to add another stamp to that passport with a trip this April to Cambodia. Approached by a family friend, Emily is set to be part of a Cows for Cambodia contingent – a visit that is set to be headed by television personality Andrew “Cosi” Costello. Cows for Cambodia aims to provide poorer village families with a cow. Owning a cow in their area breaks the poverty cycle for the families and results in a significant improvement in their standard of living. Each group member is required to raise a minimum of $2000, which is the approximate price of a cow in Cambodia. These funds go directly towards the purchase of a cow for a family. Any surplus funds will be used to purchase rice and other essentials for the villagers. During their Cambodian visit, Emily and the rest of the group, will be assisting with cattle vaccinations, doing rice drops to villages, planting King Grass, building homes, and helping the local school children with their English lessons. Emily will be one of the youngest to have taken part in Cows for Cambodia and is looking forward to seeing how the money she raises benefits the village families who are very poor and live very simply. Embracing the spirit of this trip, Emily has sold her hand-reared steer to fund her travel expenses and she now

It’s time to start hunting through your closet and storage cupboards and it’s for a good cause. Animal rescue workers desperately need animal skins, whether it be an old, and not so politically correct fur coat; sheepskin car seat covers or even the animal hide floor rugs. Brigid Larkin is spearheading the campaign, as being able to utilise these natural products significantly boosts the rehabilitation prospects of injured wildlife. “I have a couple of friends who rescue injured wildlife and being able to use actual animal skins really helps,” Brigid said. “They feel more at home so anything that’s real animal would help.” Brigid’s wildlife rescue friends are currently rehabilitating a couple of young wombats. Anyone who can assist with Brigid’s campaign can contact Josephine Duigan on 0488 775 213.

has her sights set on raising that $2000 minimum. She has made a successful start by busking with her flute on the main street and at the various local markets. She has also prepared money tins which are currently located at Killara Food Centre and Gambier Rural Traders of 333 Commercial Street West and will be distributed to other local supportive businesses shortly. Being a keen musician, Emily has been invited to

bring her flute to Cambodia and share her love of music. She has decided to go one step further and take with her a number of recorders for the village children. She is looking forward to teaching them to play these instruments and also embrace the love of music. This may well be her biggest challenge yet. SOUTH WEST VICTORIA PROVIDING VINTAGE MACHINERY BLISS DURING THE EARLY MONTHS OF 2017 The 2017 National Heritage Rally is being held in Hamilton from 21 to 23 April. Hamilton Pastoral Museum was awarded the hosting rights of the National Historical Machinery Association Rally for 2017 and will host this at the Hamilton Harness Racing Club on Ballarat Road. A feature of the rally grounds will be the 850 metre fenced circuit roadway that includes the tractor pull track. Connected to this Grande Parade Circuit are the vintage car, truck and military areas and the crawler earth moving, threshing, hay baling, tractor and garden tractor working fields. All working fields will be fenced to allow access and safe viewing by the public and allow machinery free movement to the circuit roadway and static display sections. In addition, there will be a number of regional market stalls selling products like chocolates, books, through to machinery parts. We have received site registrations from people wishing to do quilting displays, wanting to show off individual collections and are looking for likeminded people to connect with. Food and drink stalls will be placed throughout the venue. As visitors arrive through the gate towards the main display arena, there will be a multitude of opportunities to view, taste and spend your money. Those travelling to Hamilton may come across a couple of ‘Road Runs’ to the Hamilton Harness Racing Club, venue for our event. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE 27... By ROBBIE TANSEL I’ve been through my email inbox this week and thought I’d respond to one of my readers. “Dear Robbie, What’s the go with your article always being on a different page of Lifestyle1 each week? I find it very challenging flicking through looking for your words of wisdom. Then on a week like last week where apparently you didn’t write an article, I flick through the whole magazine twice thinking I must have missed it on the first time around. If I knew which page it was on each week I could just turn there and it would save me time and stress. Wally from Willalooka.” I’ve got to say, if this is the biggest problem you have Wally, then things are going quite well for you down at beautiful Willalooka. I’m going to totally ignore your frivolous and pathetic issues and share some real problems. For example I’ve spent my whole life thinking that magic is make believe. Shaquille has been at kindy for two weeks now. I thought by this point that we’d be searching for a new kindy after our little buddy had been expelled for the terrible behaviour he consistently displays in my house. Instead those magical fairies have waved their wands and turned him into a little boy who sits quietly, listens to

stories, sings songs and listens to people who are not members of the Wiggles… while he’s at kindy, anyway. He’s still the same little monster as soon as he walks through the gate to go home. After several of my recent articles that have dealt with my difficulties controlling Shaquille, I’d hate people to think that he rules the house and gets away with anything he wants. One of the parenting strategies I use is being on the attack. I don’t literally mean that I attack him. What I mean is that I try to ensure that I try to be the most annoying member of the household so he is too busy being frustrated by my annoying behaviour to be annoying himself. One classic strategy is the good old, “I’m hungry; g’day Hungry, I’m Dad”. Kids hate this one. They don’t realise that you as the parent realise they’re saying that they want something to eat and you’re just making out you think their name is hungry. The longer that you as the parent continue the charade, the more frustrated and annoyed they get. Getting back to my point, the problem I have with this whole kindy thing is that I’ve spent four years trying to get the little boy to follow some basic instructions. And they have him for two

weeks and he’s listening and using his manners and packing things up. It makes me feel a little inadequate. As if that isn’t bad enough, he’s also learnt the word “penis”. We’ve always called that part of his body his “willy”. I’m not sure who decided to teach him this word. I don’t think it was at kindy, although it could have been one of the other kids I guess. Apparently it is considered important these days that children learn the correct names for their body parts. I think it’s to do with concerns about child abuse and wanting children to be able correctly describe body parts if something was to happen. It may be useful in that sort of situation but on the other hand it just doesn’t sound right coming out of the mouth of a four year old at random moments in the day. I think you’d be surprised how often in a day you need to say something about your penis when you’re four years old. In fact I think it may actually be one of the main topics of conversation. It feels like if there’s a lull in conversation he will share an anecdote about his penis. That’s a little bit of a problem at home and really quite uncomfortable when we’re at the supermarket. I might see if the kindy teachers can do something about it. To vote on which page of Lifestyle1 you’d like my article to be found each week, email me at robbietansel@gmail. com

EXPLORING PICCANINNIE PONDS

Piccaninnie Ponds played host to more than 50 walkers and snorkellers explored the RAMSARlisted park in celebration of World Wetlands Day earlier this month. Funded by the South East NRM Board through the NRM levy, the event was an opportunity for the community to explore this unique wetland, with access to free snorkelling and wetsuit gear. Natural Resources staff provided expert advice, enriching the activity with information about endangered species, Aboriginal uses for local native plants and the Ponds’ unique karst geology. Open to the public, entry to Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park is free, but you must have a permit to snorkel or dive. TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Pumpkin & Ricotta Pie 1 kilo kent pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into 2cm wedges 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 teaspoon chilli flakes 1 leek, thinly sliced 800g firm ricotta 1/4 cup (20g) fresh breadcrumbs 1/2 cup (40g) finely grated vegetarian hard cheese 1/4 cup flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped

400g can brown lentils 1 egg, lightly beaten Pastry 2 cups plain flour 1 teaspoon salt 150g butter 1 egg 1-2 tablespoons iced water

Method Preheat the oven to 200C. Grease a 22cm round, springform pan and line the base with non-stick baking paper. To make pastry, process flour and butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add salt, egg and iced water and process until mixture just sticks together. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Shape into a disc. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Toss the pumpkin, olive oil, garlic, chilli and salt and pepper in a large bowl. Arrange on a large baking tray lined with baking paper and roast for 30 minutes, or until golden and tender. Meanwhile, in a large bowl mix the leek, ricotta, breadcrumbs, cheese and parsley together. Set aside. Cut two-thirds off the pastry and reserve the smaller piece. Roll out the larger piece on a lightly floured sheet of non-stick baking paper to a 25cm round. Carefully flip the pastry over your rolling pin and peel away the paper. Line the base and sides of the prepared tin with the pastry easing it into the edges and pressing into the side, taking care not to stretch the pastry. Divide the ricotta mixture into three. Spread a third of the ricotta mixture over the base. Layer half the pumpkin and lentils on top. Spread over half the remaining ricotta and top with remaining pumpkin and lentils. Finish with the ricotta and smooth the surface. Brush the rim of the pastry with the beaten egg. Roll out the remaining piece of pastry on a sheet of floured baking paper to a 5mm-thick, 22.5cm round, then place over filling. Trim edges, then, using a fork or your fingers, crimp edges to seal. Brush pastry with beaten egg. Using a sharp knife, make four small slits in the top. Reduce oven to 180C, then bake for 1 hour or until pastry is golden. Cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

LOCAL SPORT NATIONAL HONOURS & SILVER MEDALS FOR LOCAL SOFTBALL TALENT

National squad member Georgia Hood

National squad member Amber Hood

Four Mount Gambier softballers have returned home with silver medals after representing South Australia at recent national championships. Imogen Walker and Georgia Hood were part of the Under 17 State team, which had a strong local flavour with Tanya Hood taking up her first head coaching role at State level, and Felicity Walker stepping into the manager’s shoes. Georgia was also selected in the championship team as the designated player. The Under 17 national championships were held at the beginning of January, with Georgia joining sister Amber Hood and cousin Jenna Burston a week later at the Under 19 nationals. After a slow start to the tournament, South Australia rallied strongly to make the final but again had to settle for silver. And after earning national selection last year, Georgia and Amber have again been shortlisted for the Junior Spirit Squad, Australia’s Under 19 team, which will be competing at the WBSC Junior Women’s World Championship in Clearwater, Florida, in July. The Mount Gambier born and bred sister act is part of a 28 player squad, which will be reduced to a final team of up to18. Georgia would be in the running to secure a pitching or batting role, while Amber is on the radar as a catcher or even a slapper, an

innovative batting style being implemented more and more in the sport to utilise the team’s quickest base runners. Both girls have had a couple of weeks respite from intense training following their national duties but this week that will ramp up again. “We have to train and do our programs on our own until April and then the squad will get together,” Georgia said. “We don’t have all the details finalised but I’ll be in the gym, working on my fitness, pitching and batting practice.” Amber, who missed two of SA’s opening three matches after sustaining a hip flexor injury in the opening match of the national championship, is still pursuing treatment but the rest immediately following the silver medal winning performance means she has recovered sufficiently to resume her strenuous training program. She is now based in Adelaide for work commitments. Never one to take a backwards step, Amber was cleaned up in a collision with a runner in the opening game of the championships. All four Mount Gambier girls had an impact in State colours. At Under 17 level, Georgia played pitcher, short stop, second base and centrefield during the championships and had a solid week in the batting box as well. In the third round against Queensland, she racked up an impressive nine strike outs as well as two safehits, one being a double, in one of the more impressive individual performances of the tournament. She ended the tournament with 30

strikeouts and 14 safehits, including a couple of triples and a handful of doubles. Imogen played centrefield, second base, pitcher and short stop, taking a spectacular catch in the outfield in the gold medal match. In her first year in this age group, Imogen showed great composure, picking up a number of key plays, as well as nine strike outs and a handful of hits. “I knew we had the talent and the girls to win,” coach Tanya Hood said. “Unfortunately as the week goes by and the kids get tired, they don’t always play at their best level but they did a great job all week and were so close to that gold medal.” It is the most successful result for the Under 17 age group for South Australia in many years. “I was pretty proud of the girls and I just wish for their sake they could have taken the extra step in the grand final.” At the Under 19 championships, Amber was the team general at catcher and was sorely missed in the games she was unable to play, all of which the eventual runner-up lost. She showed her range with the bat, boasting a handful of triples and doubles during the week, as well as a well crafted short game that saw her bunting and base running loom as a key factor. Amber and Georgia combined on a few occasions, including the semi and grand finals, in the pitcher-catcher combination, with Georgia also playing centrefield. She pitched 23 strike outs and again had her say with the bat. Jenna was a key outfielder for the SA side, playing in all three positions beyond the diamond. She also picked up some hits along the way, and her short game was also utilised. Having played two weeks of national championships in a three week period in January, Georgia reluctantly admits, her strict training regime ensured she was able to perform at her best. “Having done the hard work before the nationals did make it easier to get through two tough weeks of softball,” Georgia said. Both Georgia and Amber will also have weekly video conferences with the Youth Spirit coaches.

LOCAL SPORT CRICKET RETURNS TO FREW PARK Curator Gary Ashby casting his eye over the first game at Frew Park in 12 months.

In a weekend packed with highlights across all grades, the return of cricket action to Frew Park was still the headline event. The Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association’s premier ground has been lying dormant for 12 months after a ground resurface that has seen its share of challenges. But with the outfield finally settling and association curator Gary Ashby able to work his magic on the pitch, Mil Lel was finally able to host a match at its home ground, taking on Penola in what amounted to a trial run for Frew Park to be returned as a finals venue. “It’s looking good and playing well,” Ashby said as he cast his eyes over the first half Jase Bateman

hour of play at the weekend. “The weather we have had, with both rain and heat has really helped with the preparation.” The weekend’s match suggested there was something for both the batting and bowling teams and Frew Park will face another test this Wednesday with some over60s and 70s cricket to be showcased at the Jubilee Highway ground. Frew saw a good battle between bat and ball, with a 73 run second wicket stand between David Somerfield (51) and skipper Jase Bateman (24) forming the foundation of Penola’s 207, with Josh Fidler bowling a lion hearted 21 overs, finishing with 3/31, and giving his side a Alex Garlick

chance to secure a win if they knuckle down with the bat. At Marist Park, North Gambier won the toss and sent Yahl in, knowing skipper and bowling spearhead Tim Young would be unavailable for the second weekend of the match, but the move backfired severely with Yahl compiling 269. Skipper Josh Reader crafted a critical century, including seven fours and five sixes, combining with veteran David Pick (36) for a 96 run fourth wicket stand. Veteran Heath Case made a valuable 44 in the lower order as North struggled to find a way through the Yahl veterans. Michael Johnston was the pick of the Tigers attack with 4/60, while Matt McInerney finished with 3/50 and Young, 2/68. Nick McInerney, coming off his standout performance during the week at the SA Country Senior Cricket Carnival in Adelaide, suffered a knee injury and was only able to complete six overs, which didn’t help North’s cause. Alex Hentschke was also amongst the runs in Kongorong’s clash with East Gambier at Scott Park. Hentschke racked up his first triple figures for Kongorong but lacked support, with the only worthwhile partnership coming with Tom Glynn (20) when the duo put on 59 runs for the second wicket. Hentschke’s 102, which included12 fours and two sixes, ensured the Hawks are still in the hunt this weekend, with Ben Clark’s 7/35 challenging Hentschke for the performance of the day. West Gambier looks to be gunning for outright points in its clash with South Gambier. The Roos, on the back of a five wicket haul from outstanding teenager Bowen Hosking, dismissed South for 52 and sit at 7/217 in reply, with Shane Stevens showing a welcome return to form with 71 and skipper Ryan Hosking compiling an impressive knock of 67. But that is not where the big performances from the weekend ended. East Gambier’s Simon Golebiowski picked up 6/50 in Crouch Shield action, while North Gambier’s Marbuck Saunders not only picked up 6/41, which included a hat trick to remove the last three Glencoe wickets – all three bowled. Ethan Bronca also had a day out with the ball for Glencoe in Crouch Shield action, piocking up 6/52. BARBER SHIELD East v Kongorong Kongorong 1st innings 152 (A. Hentschke 102; T. Glynn 20; B. LOCAL SPORT PACING PEOPLE’S CHAMPION HEADED TO GREENWALD PACEWAY The 2017 Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup has a huge drawcard outside of the predicted strong racing to claim the region’s most prestigious pacing prize. Recently retired icon of the sport Come On Frank will be the main attraction for racegoers as the popular South Australian pacer enjoys somewhat of a farewell tour, which started at Globe Derby Park last month when he led the field onto the track for the Group One $100,000 Ubet South Australian Pacing Cup. Trainer-driver Darren Billinger is under new illusions as to the popularity of his horse, which finished his stellar career with 61 wins, 26 seconds and 12 thirds from 130 starts, amassing stakes of more than $400,000 along the way. The nine year old was battling health issues when the owners decided to pull the pin on his illustrious career on New Year’s Eve.

MOUNT GAMBIER & DISTRICT CRICKET HALL OF FAME

The Come On Frank story has all the elements of an epic movie – a horse that seemed destined not to fulfil his potential before a family tragedy saw “Frank” start his winning ways, starting with the Southern Cross final in 2011. Come On Frank is not just much loved in the Billinger family but throughout the pacing industry - a horse that transcended the sport in the same ilk as the likes of Makybe Diva and Black Caviar. The 2017 Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup heats are this Sunday at a twilight meeting before the main event on Saturday, March 4. Left - Come On Frank is set to be the special guest at the 2017 Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup final on March 4.

STRONG ALLROUND PERFORMANCE LANDS MCINERNEY IN TEAM OF THE CARNIVAL

MCCORMICK STARTS AFL HIGHLIGHTS REEL

Just over a week ago, former Mount Gambeir athlete Jenna McCormick was part of a tense semi final loss with Canberra United in the W-League. After claiming the premiership plate, Canberra was dumped from the premiership race in an overtime loss to Melbourne City. McCormick was a defender in that campaign and only five days later. she lined up deep forward for the Adelaide Crows in round two of the AFL Women’s League. McCormick kicked a stunning snap goal just before three quarter time, when the Crows well and truly blew the game apart. McCormick is one of a few cross code athletes debuting in the inaugural AFL Women’s League having played other sports at the highest domestic level as well. Above - Jenna McCormick celebrates her goal with team mates at the weekend’s round two AFL Women’s League action.

LSE PENNANT BOWLS

This round’s top performers (clockwise from left) - Alex Hentschke (102); Ben Clark (7/35; Josh Reader (100) & Simon Golebiwoski (6/50). Ethan Bronca (6/52) & Marbuck Saunders (6/41, including a hat trick) were also top performers.

Nick McInerney has been staking strong claims for allrounder status in the past couple of Barber Shield season and last week at the SA Country Senior Cricket Carnival he left pundits in no doubt, topping the batting averages, courtesy of a top score of 97, and also finishing in the top five for bowling figures - his 4/13 in the same match he notched the 97 his best for the four game competition. The South East lost a heat affected final to Upper North, in a heat policy shortened clash. Not suprisingly Nick was named in the team of the carnival.

Supper is included in the ticket price for a night out that will include auction and games with the bar and canteen facilities open. Doors open 6pm. BOWLS FUNDRAISER ON THE HORIZON The Lower South East Legacy Group is pleased to announce that the 36th Annual Legacy Bowls Day will be held at the Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowling Club on Sunday, February 26, commencing at 9.30am. It will be opened this year by Legatee Bill Watts, who is retiring from his position as co-ordinator after more than 12 years. Reagan Milstein loved two things in life – football (soccer) and helping people – and so it seemed only fitting to combine the two when his parents were looking for a way to honour their son after his death in a 2010 scuba diving accident. His father Kevin Milstein (pictured right) started thinking about an idea for a foundation even as he sat by Reagan’s bedside in intensive care. “As a parent you contemplate what you’ll do if the worst happens,” he said. “What were those 14 years for? We wanted his name to keep living.” And so, in the most tragic of circumstances, the Reagan Milstein Foundation was born. “Initially it (the foundation) was focusing on trying to raise funds to give grants to less fortunate kids who couldn’t afford to join a club,” Kevin said. “But later it went a step further, collecting used boots and distributing them to less fortunate communities.” Communities in Australia, Africa, South East Asia and the South Pacific have all benefited from the used boots program and now Mount Gambier, courtesy of locally based Reagan Milstein Foundation ambassador Scott Dickson are set to benefit with a Celtic Football Club camp in April as part of the Reagan Milstein Foundation academy program. The foundation has close formed a close working relationship with Celtic and EPL giant Liverpool. “If we get the Celtic partnership working really well then we will look to bring Liverpool into play as well,” he said. “It is so great to have Reagan’s name associated with two of the biggest clubs in the world – I think it would make him very happy.” Scott alerted Kevin to the possibility of the Australian run Celtic camps and Kevin ran with the idea. “I am also president of a club in Melbourne and I realised the cities get all the focus when these type of academies are run and regional areas miss out,” he said. That’s how Mount Gambier became one of three regional centres benefitting from the Celtic opportunity along with Shepparton and Ballarat. The Mount Gambier sessions are from April 17-19. “The foundation already has a whole of community approach to its academies and Celtics have a similar approach,” Kevin said. “That’s how they started their community work, working with orphans.” The foundation also has a strong focus on All Abilities programs and when Kevin visited the region last week, he spent time visiting Gordon Education Centre to promote the those All Abilities sessions. While the April camps are for children across all skill levels, there is the chance for one talented individual to secure an opportunity of a lifetime with a foundation sponsored trip worth $3500 to attend the Celtic Football Club Player Academy in Glasgow for a week. Kevin basically runs the foundation full time and is overwhelmed how it has developed in the past six and a half years. “We were just taking it as it comes and never thought it would grow so big,” Kevin said. “I like to think Reagan is pulling some stings from above.” Head to the website www.rmf.world to register for the Celtic camps.

invited shows how highly the teenage rider is rated and with British Superbikes and Australian Superbikes also potential pathways, Dallas is setting himself for the long, hard road ahead. He has had offers, both in Australia and overseas, but is committed to staying on GP style bikes. Jack Miller is Dallas’ favourite rider at the moment. “I have met him before and he’s really nice,” Dallas said. “He is always happy to talk to you whenever he is back in Australia.” Mick Doohan is another motorcycle hero for Dallas, and he loves the work of Italian seven time world champion Valentino Rossi and three time world champion Marc Marquez, from Spain. since he was two and has come off a 12 months where he announced himself as a motorcycling star of the future in emphatic fashion. He claimed the 2016 125cc Championship, as well as the George Carrick Championship, with a creditable third placing in the Victorian Road Race Championships. It is a phenomenal effort by the teenager, in his first year of 125cc competition, and having been competing only since he was 12. “I never did dirt racing,” Dallas said. “I went straight into road racing.” In a way it was almost inevitable – in his genes - with dad Michael also having had a career racing bikes. “Dad was pretty good and could have gone on to be the best in Australia,” Dallas said. “He got sick of it though and stopped riding for a while before coming back in his late20s, early 30s.” Michael has done nine Finke Desert races with a best placing of 45th and now spends even more time trackside as he ferries Dallas to his weekend competitions. “I think racing motorbikes was going to happen for me no matter what,” Dallas said. And he is setting himself to go as far as he can in the high adrenalin sport. “I am aiming for MotoGP or World Superbikes,” Dallas said. A trip to Malaysia in October last year solidified his desire to aim high. “I didn’t end up getting in but it was a great experience and I got through a couple of rounds and it was tough on bikes I had never ridden and tracks I had never raced,” he said. “The bikes were a completely different style, more like a scooter than a GP style bike.” Just to get

been an influence even closer to home – Mount Gambier rider Levi Day, who has competed in the British Superbikes. “During the off season I go to every coaching session I can with Levi,” Dallas said. “Levi gives me motivation because I know he came from the same club I did and got to compete in some really big races and championships. He is definitely my inspiration.” During the season, which runs from February to October, Dallas competes at least twice a month and often it can be every weekend, and he spend at least three days a week after school training. Over the off season, along with the multiple sessions with Levi at MacNamara Park, Dallas has also spent some time on the dirt bike, taking advantage of living on a property. Motorsport is not a cheap pursuit and when you are riding at the level Dallas is, it means nationwide competitions. “Up till now I have mainly raced close to home in Adelaide and tracks in Victoria,” Dallas said. “But it looks like this year I might be going to Perth or Darwin and even Queensland with some of the series I am hoping to race. It certainly makes it harder and you have to go to these places before the competition so you can learn the track, especially as most of the guys I am competing against rode them last year.” The South Australian and Victorian 125cc Championships are on the Dallas Skeer 2017 calendar, as is the Hartwell Championships and the Australian Superbike Championships. “Some races do end up clashing so sometimes you are forced to choose.” The other challenge is keeping up with his school work and Dallas is grateful his school, Kangaroo Inn Area School, has been supportive in that area. “They move things if I am going to be away so I still get to do the tests and things like that.”
