COLLECTED STUPIDITY - BACK TO SCHOOL... By ROBBIE TANSEL Every year at this time we’re reminded to drive carefully around schools as children are back. I’m of the opinion that we should actually be warned to be careful around teachers. Imagine their mental state, enjoying such a lovely break and having to go back into that environment. I feel sorry for teachers. That’s not sarcasm; I really do. They do get the nice holidays but I think that must almost make their lives more difficult. I find it difficult to motivate myself to go back to work after a long weekend. Once I’ve tasted that freedom, peace and recreation for three days, it is incredibly challenging to convince myself to return to work. Imagine if you’d been living the good life for five or six weeks and then had to make yourself return. I hope this isn’t coming across as sarcasm because I’m genuine. I know teachers. I’ve heard people say to them,

“You teachers and all your holidays; gee you’ve got a great life.” I normally respond with, “You know that you could be a teacher if you wanted, right. It’s not like becoming a member of the royal family. Anyone who wants can go and train to do it. If you think it’s so great, you should go to university and study it.” They normally respond with, “Na, I couldn’t do that. I wouldn’t cope. I’d kill one of the kids.” So what they’re essentially saying is that it’s not such a great job. It’s like every job in that it has things that make it good and things that make it horrible (children). I think there are probably eras where being a teacher would have been good fun. Imagine being a teacher back in the day where you could hit kids when they were naughty. You can’t even do that as a parent these days. I want you to

imagine your job, if you were allowed to hit people who annoyed you. If you work in retail and a customer annoyed you, wouldn’t it be great if you could belt them. If you are a tradie, imagine if a client was being too demanding, and you could put them over your knee for a couple of good ones. That was the life teachers had. Plus the holidays. Now teachers can barely look crossly at children without having someone complaining about them. I don’t particularly like having a child in my house let alone spending eight hours each day in a room with thirty of them. That seems like cruel and unusual punishment to me. Let me tell you some of the things I would dislike about being a teacher. Number one, kids smell. Class rooms

have a distinctive odour, be it the smell of urine and number twos in a junior primary class, the smell of body odour in an upper primary class where the students are unaware of their need for deodorant, or the smell of cigarettes in a secondary class. Or maybe that was just when I went to school. Another thing I’d hate about being a teacher is always having people asking me questions and wanting me to help them. Kids are so needy. I’d just say, “Google it kids. It’s all on Google. And then I’d sit at my desk and read a book or have a snack.” You might be wondering what has brought about my profound and somewhat newfound respect and sympathy for teachers. Well, my son Shaquille starts kindy this week. I have no idea how the poor teachers are going to get him to learn something. I’ve spent four years trying to get him to follow instructions with absolutely no success. I’m convinced that the only way they’re going to be able to keep him in line is with a really good sheepdog. If he had a border collie nipping at his heels, it might help to keep him on track. If you breed sheepdogs and have had any success in training them to roundup wandering toddlers, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com or contact your local kindergarten.

WATTLE RANGE CELEBRATING AUSTRALIA DAY ACROSS FOUR VENUES

Wattle Range Council enjoyed its usual Australia Day celerations with award ceremonies across four locations. Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi said the awards acknowledged the contribution and service provided to the community by individuals and groups Recipients of the 2017 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards were Arvan Carthew, of Tantanoola, Julie Moran, of Beachport, Annie Kilsby, of Penola, and Kerry Dowdell, of Kalangadoo. Jack Lane, of Millicent, received the Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year Award for the Corcoran Ward, Dallas Skeer, of Furner, for the Kintore Ward, and Alana Winter was the Riddoch Ward award winner. Australia Day Community Event of the Year Awards went to the Millicent AH & P Society for the Corcoran Ward, and for the Riddoch Ward, The Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival. Lifestyle1 will take a closer look at some of these winners in coming issues.

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY MEMBERS RECOGNISED AT AUSTRALIA DAY FESTIVITIES Two Glenelg Shire residents who have dedicated their lives to helping the community have shared the

2017 Glenelg Shire Citizen of the Year Australia Day Award. Cyril Cram, from Portland, and Noel Bull, from Dartmoor,

were named joint recipients of the day’s top honour, recognised today in celebrations hosted across the shire. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said both were outstanding individuals who had helped to empower their communities through their tireless volunteer efforts. Cyril was recognised for his passion for supporting the people of the Glenelg Shire, having been a volunteer in the area since he was 15 years of age. “There aren’t many people in Portland who have not heard of Cyril, or the amazing work he does for the community,” Cr Rank said. “He has been instrumental in helping to run and assist community groups such as the Portland Citizens’ Brass Band, the Portland Coastguard, Portland Apex Club and St Johns Ambulance Brigade. He is an outstanding role model for our current and future generations of the Glenelg Shire.” Fellow Citizen of the Year Noel Bull has been a strong advocate for mental health, particularly for men. Through his calendar Farming in your Spare Time, he has helped to raise more than $16,000 for Beyondblue.

“With the added element of personal experience, Noel has been able to spark conversation and action in his community about an often taboo topic,” Cr Rank said. “He has helped to improve the access to support services for individuals and families to overcome depression and anxiety. By reducing the stigma of mental illness, Noel is helping to change community attitudes, a truly incredible achievement.” Hundreds of people joined Australia Day celebrations in Portland, Casterton and Heywood to recognise the award winners and to celebrate the citizenship

of seven Glenelg Shire residents. Australia Day Ambassadors provided motivational addresses at the celebrations, community paediatrician Dr Bruce Jenner presented at the Portland and Heywood events and futurist Dr Peter Ellyard spoke at the Casterton festivities. Other Australia Day award winners included; Senior Citizen of the Year – Heather Burton & Betty Collins • Heather Burton – Heather was recognised for her long standing volunteer efforts with Portland and District Health. • Betty Collins – Betty was recognised for her involvement in many community groups such as The Friends of the Glenelg House, Telelink, Meals on Wheels and the local Quilters Group. Young Citizen of the Year – Grace Davey & Kane Forbes • Grace Kelly – Grace was recognised for her high level of involvement and leadership in her school, local sports and service clubs, particularly through the Portland Lifesaving Club. • Kane Forbes – Kane was recognised for his ability to overcome adversary, especially at a young age, and his active involvement with local sporting clubs in Casterton. Community Group of the Year – Portland Coastguard Thanks to the efforts of the Portland Coastguard 1200 people have received help, 67,000 radio calls have been responded to and volunteers have provided in excess of 42,000 hours of assistance. MOUNT GAMBIER HONOURS ITS VOLUNTEERS

Principal Partner

A former paramedic who now spends his retirement volunteering; a journalism graduate working with both the elderly and the city’s youth and a teenage fundraising machine, inspired by a mate, were the recipient of individual honours at the 2017 Australia Day celebrations at Mount Gambier’s Rail Lands. Citizen of the Year Alan Balshaw is a familiar face around Mount Gambier as a long serving paramedic but in the past few years, it has been his volunteer work keeping him busy. For a decade he has been an integral member of the St Vinnies team, serving the past four years as regional president, and he also visits patients in hospital, aged care facility residents and jail inmates. He also works with the homeless and newly arrived refugees. Alan used the opportunity to encourage young people to take up volunteering. “I would like to encourage young kids to get involved and it’s great to see young people stepping up to take over from us older fogies,” he said. “It is humbling to be singled out. I see this as recognition of our team effort rather than individuals. It’s not through individuals but through a team and their support that things get done.” Read Alan’s full story in next week’s Lifestyle1. Two young people were awarded the Young Citizen of the Year – 23 year old journalism graduate Bhavani Bailey-Walters and teenage cancer fundraising guru Josh Telford. “I feel so humbled and honoured to be standing here getting this award,” Bhavani said, at the presentation ceremony. “I have to thank my mum because without her unconditional love and support I wouldn’t be here today. I would like to thank all the people I work with at Vinnies, Resthaven and the Foodbank – it is a privilege to know everyone and I am proud to be part of their teams.” Bhavani also urged other young people to follow her lead. “I would encourage as many people as possible to become volunteers and become part of the community,” she said. “You meet some amazing people and make new friends and you gain some cool skills. You should definitely have a go, it’s definitely a lot of fun. The community support we have here is amazing and I am so proud to call Mount Gambier home.” Bhavani is on the hunt for a job, with travel journalism and social justice work at the top of her list but while she waits for those career opportunities to open up she is set to continue her studies by embarking on her Masters, and she continues her volunteer work, which includes front counter and sorting work at St Vinnies, work through her local church, Gambier East Uniting Church, and her volunteer work at Resthaven – where she revamped and maintains the library. Bhavani has been volunteering lifestyle1.net | 06

Member for Barker Tony Pasin (far left) and Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell (far right) congratulate the 2017 Australia Day Award winners in Mount Gambier

at Vinnies for the past five years and Resthaven for four years. It was when her grandmother moved to Resthaven and Bhavani saw the collection of books and asked if she could organise and establish a more formal library – and that’s exactly what she’s done. “I now have it sorted in genres and alphabetically and made it easier to access for the residents,” Bhavani maintains the collection, which is all donated, every week. “You have to make sure of things like that the print is not too small or the books are not too heavy.” The former Tenison Woods College student has also been a long serving youth leader at her church and is on one of the worship leading teams. “I just loving helping people when they really need it.” And it was a need that saw 15 year old Josh Telford take up his crusade to fundraise for cancer charities. The Grant High School student was with some mates at the football at Kalangadoo when discussions turned to raising money. Josh went straight home and headed online to research what he could do and so emerged the first of two times Josh has shaved his head to raise funds. That was in 2014 when his goal of $500 was easily eclipsed as he secured $1800 from a 21 day campaign. When cancer touched his life, through close mate Toby Rayner, Josh became aware of just how difficult it is for families when they are so far away from treatment. Josh and his family spent 2015 fundraising for the Rayner family and last year, when he lost his locks again, his target was a much more ambitious $2500 and again his hard work and this community’s generosity saw $4000 added to the kitty. “I was so happy,” Josh said. “People are so generous and willing to help.” When you add door knocking, raffles, sausage sizzles and the support from Grant High School through casual day fundraising and the Kalangadoo and North Gambier Football Clubs, Josh has eclipsed the $11,000 and shows no signs of slowing down. “I want to keep doing the fundraising although I don’t think I’ll shave my head again – I think I’ll find another way.” And while Josh acknowledges the help his family has

given him, especially mum’s taxi service, even at 15, he is taking on more and more responsibility for his fundraising campaigns. “The first time it was 60-40 but the last time it was more 85-15 and I’m doing a lot more by myself,” he said. “I do seem to have good organisational skills when it comes to the fundraising.” Josh admitted that organisational ability doesn’t always flow through to his everyday life. cont. page 8 Below (top) - The 2017 Australia Day flag raising ceremony.

MOUNT GAMBIER HONOURS ITS VOLUNTEERS FROM PAGE 6 The Community Event of the Year went the way of the Dimjalla Skate Park Event – a Mount Gambier Youth Advisory Group initiated event that saw the popular skate park host a round of the YMCA Victoria South Western District Series. It was accepted by Sarah Harden and Ally Finnis, who helped put together the March 2016 event. Consultation with young people and the skating community, securing sponsors, booking live entertainment

and organising a band of volunteers for the day were all part of the Youth Advisory Group’s brief and it is hoped the event will return to Mount Gambier in 2018. MERV HUGHES SET TO HEADLINE GOLF DAY FUNDRAISER Australian cricket legend Merv Hughes will visit Portland in March for a golf day to help raise funds for new surgical equipment at Portland District Health. The golf event and dinner will be on Friday, March 24, and is the fifth annual charity golf day hosted by PDH. The first four events have raised a total of $80,000 for vital equipment in the Urgent Care Centre and the redevelopment of various departments including palliative care and cancer units in the sub-acute department. Proceeds from the 2017 charity golf day will be invested into fundraising for a flexible cystoscope for PDH’s urology surgical service. Hughes (pictured) played 53 Tests for Australia from 1985-94 and took 212 wickets at an average of 28.38. He has since carved a successful career in media and promotions. The crowd favourite known for his bristling moustache will interact with all players

during the golf game and assist with presentations. He will later speak at the dinner. Players in the game will have three chances on separate par three holes to win a holein-one competition that carries a $20,000 prize to be shared by PDH and the golfer. The evening will include Hughes, musical entertainment, delicious food, live and silent auctions, raffles and lucky door prizes with drinks available at bar prices. Organiser Carolyn Malseed said the charity golf day had become a major fundraising and community event. “We’re hoping to again attract strong

community support for this great event which is a lot of fun but also an important fund-raiser to provide improved services to the community,” Ms Malseed said. All donations are tax deductible. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS HONOURED AT SOUTHERN GRAMPIANS AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Cr Mary-Ann Brown presented the winners of the 2017 Southern Grampians Shire Australia Day Awards at the shire’s official Australia Day ceremony at the Hamilton Botanical Gardens on Thursday. Mayor Brown said it was important to recognise the outstanding achievements of people and community groups who make a significant contribution to the shire. “I would like to congratulate all of the Australia Day award winners. Your community is very proud of you and everything you have achieved,” Mayor Brown said. “The Southern Grampians Shire is such a great community to live and be involved in and it is people like these award winners who make it so. Their contribution to their community cannot be understated and so it is very fitting that they are recognised for

Sadie Langley

their outstanding achievements with the presentation of an Australia Day Award.” Citizen of the Year went to Coleraine’s Sadie Langley for her service as a vital and longstanding volunteer of numerous local community organisations. Sadie is well known for her unwavering

commitment to the elderly members of the community through her 40 years of delivering Meals on Wheels. She also drove the community car until she turned 80 and retired. For the past 20 years Sadie has volunteered one day per fortnight to act as a volunteer at the Coleraine Tourist Information Centre, working hard to ensure the visitors are providing with the information they need to enjoy their time in the region and stay longer or return again and again. Sadie is also a member on the committee of the Coleraine Cemetery Trust and treasurer for the Coleraine Historical Society; assisting locals discover their family history as well as collating and restoring local history for the benefit of generations to come. Sadie loves gardening and regularly propagates plants to sell as part of community fundraising events and has provided support to the Coleraine Primary School to build an understanding of horticulture by providing information and volunteering time to tend the garden with the school children. Sadie is a member of the Coleraine walking group to promote social and health benefits and has worked as a volunteer steward at the Coleraine Pastoral and Agricultural Show. Hamilton’s Elly McLean was awarded the Young Citizen of the Year for her work as youth coordinator for the Hamilton Refugees Support Association, contributing her time voluntarily, completing administrative tasks as well as assisting with fundraising at the Uniting Church. Elly is also a volunteer at the Hamilton North Rotary Club and often assists with fundraising events and volunteers to support the Western District Health Service with their annual Door Knock Appeal, and community garden working bees. She is a member of the Hamilton Dance Company, Hamilton Swim Club and Hamilton Kangaroos Netball Club. Elly recently won the Melbourne University’s Social Justice Young Leader scholarship; is the recipient of the Lions Club Youth of the Year Award (State Level); and the winner of the United Nations Young Diplomats search. Elly has been selected to attend the Aotearoa Leadership Tour in New Zealand later this year as part of the UN Youth Australia program. The Mayor’s Award, which goes to an Outstanding Young Citizen went

the way of Amba Chace. Sadly, both of Amba’s parents suffer from brain injuries and live separately. Amba is an integral figure in her family and often takes on the responsibility of caring for her two younger siblings. Amba has been part of the Standing Tall program at Baimbridge College from 2010 – 2015. In the final two years of her involvement, Amba held the position of peer mentor. This role involves public speaking, peer leadership support to younger students within the program, as well as administrative and events support within the program. Amba has been completing her studies in childcare and currently works as a nanny. Amba now plans to move to Canada for a year to work as an au pair. Serra Terror - an annual endurance event held in the Grampians National Park over two days of the June Long weekend - took out the Community Event of the Year for 2017. Each year, up to 50 teams battle the terrain and the elements as they hike, run or scramble through the 80km Serra Terror course. Serra Terror was the brainchild of Maree Willey, with the support of the whole Dunkeld community, and started in 2010 as a fundraising event for the Dunkeld Community Centre – a project that ultimately cost $2.5 million. Serra Terror is catered for by the Dunkeld Consolidated School, the Dunkeld Kindergarten and the Glenthompson-Dunkeld Football Netball Club and each group uses the opportunity to support the event as part of their annual fundraising program. Over the past seven years, the event has contributed more than $250,000 to the Dunkeld Community Centre and in turn the centre now hosts more than 150 events annually, providing an ongoing economic benefit to the town and the wider region. The Mayor’s Award for an

Outstanding Community Event went to Hamilton parkrun - a free weekly event organized solely by volunteers from within the community. The event offers a free, timed 5km run, jog or walk for people of all ages and abilities and it takes place every week of the year. The Hamilton parkrun event committee wanted to help reverse the increasing rate of obesity in young people in the shire, as well as contribute towards building a positive local community culture that is healthy, happy, inclusive and well connected. They also wanted to encourage people to use Lake Hamilton more often. Hamilton parkrun launched in October 2015 with 123 walkers and runners, and 16 volunteers. The event has now taken place each week for 67 weeks, only missing one week due to flooding, has an average of six volunteers per week and an average of 52 participants each week. Locally, there are 627 registered Hamilton parkrunners and Hamilton parkrun has inspired new events to start across the region, including Portland, Warrnambool and now Port Fairy. CFS STALWART AWARDED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR A long serving CFS stalwart has been honoured for his service to the community with the 2017 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award at the Grant District Council celebrations on Thursday. Kingsley CFS Brigade’s Garry Talbot accepted the accolade alongside representatives from the Community Event of the Year – the Tarpeena Cancer Support Group. The 2017 celebrations were hosted at the Port MacDonnell Football Club. District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage said as a council they felt that it was important to not only celebrate the award recipients but to honour all the nominees. “They have all made a positive difference to our community and should feel very proud to be nominated for the award,” Mayor Sage said. The Australia Day Ambassador at the Grant District Council celebrations was Port Adelaide Football Club stalwart Jack Cahill and

the Australian Rules football icon was on hand to also present the award winners alongside Mayor Sage. Grace Gilmore, of Mount Gambier (formerly of Port MacDonnell and Eight Mile Creek), Ashley Hartwig and Gweneth Hartwig, of Tarpeena; and Roger Whitty, of Tarpeena, were the other nominees for the Citizen of the Year honours that eventually went to Garry Talbot. Port MacDonnell based Garry has been a member of the Kingsley CFS for more than 30 year,s holding positions of Group Officer and Deputy Group Officer over a 20 year period. Under Garry’s leadership the CFS brigade has been one of the best equipped and housed brigades in South Australia. He has now stepped down as the Group Officer but remains a firefighter with the Kingsley CFS brigade. The Tarpeena Cancer Support Group was represented by Poppy Howe. Mrs Howe, who lost a son

to cancer, formed a group who meet at the Tarpeena Football Clubrooms. The group has been able to donate to the Cancer Council by raising money from various functions, donations from people and businesses within the Tarpeena community, as well as

a monthly stall held at the Tarpeena Family Market. In 2016, the Tarpeena Cancer Support Group donated an Accu Vein machine to the Mount Gambier Hospital and continues to support cancer patients at the chemotherapy suite of the Mount Gambier Hospital.

national treasure, rich in cultural heritage possessing a unique story which is about to be brought to life,” Cr Rank said. “Our shire is currently known as Victoria’s birthplace, but this is a landscape that pre-dates the Egyptian pyramids as one of Australia’s earliest civilisations and rightly deserves international recognition. The story of the Gunditjmara people is one which will attract a global audience. It is a world class tourism asset which will further enhance our shire’s tourism profile, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the region each year, redefining our tourism economy.” Cr Rank praised the efforts of the Guntijmirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Winda Mara Aboriginal Corporation who have worked tirelessly to promote and enhance the Dreamtime stories of the landscape.

Above - Prime Minister the Hon Malcolm Turnbull, Cr Karen Stephens, Mayor Cr Anita Rank and Member for Wannon the Hon Dan Tehan at the Budj Bim announcement. The organisations attracted $8 million in State Government funding for the Budj Bim Master Plan which includes the installation of interpretive signage, walking trails, picnic shelter areas and associated amenities to improve the visitor experience.

The Budj Bim landscape includes evidence of eel traps and stone huts including various artefacts such as ocre, axe heads, spear heads and grinding stones. “There is a growing international tourism market that has a huge appetite for these

indigenous cultural experiences and we think we have an engaging story to share,” Cr Rank said. “This landscape will become a number one stopover for our growing cruise ship market.”

Last round of Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association saw some supreme bowling performances – at the weekend the batsmen well and truly exacted their revenge. From West Gambier’s Bowen Hosking (pictured above far left) carving is first Barber Shield century to Cox Bros player Rob Courtney (pictured below), from Yahl, securing his second century in three seasons; from another debutante century maker Ben Deamer (pictured above far right), in Crouch Shield action for Centrals, alongside his skipper Craig Hicks (pictured above centre), who also topped the ton, it was a weekend for high scores across the competition. Hosking played basically a lone hand for the Roos against North Gambier with a stunning 127 as wickets crumbled at the other end. Nick McInerney was the destroyer, taking 6/53. Yahl has set East Gambier a challenging

chase of 171 for victory in their Barber Shield clash in a match where Yahl skipper Josh Reader (72) ensured his side posted a competitive total. Mil Lel also look to be in the box seat against South Gambier, posting an impressive 270 on the back of Daniel Justin’s 73, with a strong finish from Brett Lawson and Josh Fidler with some late order hitting. Penola also is sitting pretty in its clash with Kongorong, compiling 9/263. Admittedly played at the small ground at Tara Raceway, Centrals Crouch Shield team took full advantage, posting an astronomical 9/438. Hicks clubbed 13 fours and right sixes on his way to 140, while Deamer, for whom this unbeaten 111 was his first century, cleared the boundary nine times and hit 10 fours. Courtney’s unbeaten Cox Shield 117 also saw some big hitting with 17 fours and three sixes.
