CLEAN, SIMPLE AND.......DELICIOUS Kerry Wiese had a long harboured dream to run her own cafe. What she needed was the planets to align and opportunity to knock – and it did – four months ago. She took over the Sturt Street space of a former cafe and nursery, gutted it, and transformed it, using the vision she always had for her own place. From the decor to the menu, Kerry had done so much of the research and planning well before she took over the space and two months after opening, 37 Degrees S Cafe, is everything for which she hoped and planned. Clean and simple has been her mantra for the decor and it’s also the theme of the menu - clean and simple food with a focus on being healthy, and, above all, delicious. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while and finally the opportunity presented itself,” Kerry said. “I had done my commercial catering through TAFE and decided to take a leap

of faith and do something different.” And it is different – the former nurse and claims specialist now proudly a cafe owner. From the point of taking the keys to 34 Sturt Street, Kerry has spent two months taking the pictures from her head to the reality of 37 Degrees S Cafe. The spacious, light interior, exudes a Scandinavian industrial feel, and Kerry has already teamed with local artist Cassie Zaccardo to brighten the walls with stunning originals. “That’s one of the things we really wanted to do and I will keep looking to build partnerships like that in the art community,” Kerry said. The menu is also exactly as Kerry always envisaged. “The plan was always to serve healthy, light meals,” Kerry said. “We wanted to avoid fried food and also offer alternatives for people with special dietary needs.” It sees a menu packed with vegan and gluten free options and when you take a peek

And that’s before you even get to the long list of specialist teas, courtesy of Edible Beauty and Tea Topper, delicious smoothies, and barista brewed Griffiths coffees. “We have visited the Griffiths site and it’s so impressive, as are the two young guys running it,” Kerry said. “Once the bean enters the first hopper, it doesn’t see the light of day until it has gone through every process. SQUARE DANCING FOR EVERYONE

The Pine City Twirlers are offering free dance lessons throughout February with the Anglican Hall on Friday nights, the venue for the popular square dancing club. KING’S CHALLENGE HELD TO RANSOM BY WEATHER Jake Tranter

It’s the premier stand alone event hosted at the Borderline Speedway but the unpredictability of this summer’s weather had the final say with the meeting halted after only one lap was completed in the A Main to decide the 2017 champion. “The weather dictates a lot of things doesn’t it?” a pragmatic club president Cary Jennings said. And while the honour board will be left blank for 2017, the 18 drivers who made the A Main are set for a windfall with the prize pool divided equally among those drivers, in accordance with the Sprintcar Council of Australia rules. If even half the race had been run, a

winner would have been declared but it is a case of what might have been, especially for the two drivers on the front of the grid – Shane Stewart and Kerry Madsen. Jennings was already casting his mind 12 months forward when he believes it will be one of the best King’s Challenge events ever. With the Australian Sprintcar Championships being held at the track a week after the Borderline’s big meeting, chances are the best drivers from across Australia will use the King’s Challenge as a perfect lead up event at the national championship venue. “The calibre of cars that will be here will make it a

In other speedway news, young guns Brad and Sam Gartner put in a solid performance at the South Australian Junior Sedans title in Whyalla – Brad finishing on the podium in third and Sam one place further back. This coming weekend, two Borderline locals are heading to the Wahgunyah Speedway in Victoria for the Australian Production Sedan Championship. The only two South Australian competitors racing at the national titles, Mark Jennings and Adam Wilson, will take on 59 other competitors to be crowned the best in Australia. STATE HONOUR FOR SQAURE DANCING CLUB You might not have tried it since primary school dance lessons where performing a do-si-do with classmates wasn’t high on the fun scale but square dancing has moved on from there and Mount Gambier boasts an award winning club with Allabout Squares having recently been nominated for the Grandeur Press Sports Awards with club creator and caller Andrea Braun recently attending the Community Achievement Awards Gala Dinner, in Adelaide, to be presented with a certificate highlighting this achievement. Allabout Squares is a local volunteer run, non profit organisation and Andrea has more than 15 years of experience running Square Dance clubs and events in

South Australia, Victoria and overseas including England, America, New Zealand and Sweden. “When most people think of square dancing they refer back to the 50s but it has since been through a complete revamp and is now called Modern American Square Dancing and is universal throughout the entire world,” Andrea said. “No matter which country you visit the actual dance moves are always called in English making this an ideal activity to do whilst travelling the world.”Square Dancing is one of the world’s best kept secrets and offers many benefits: • Promotes physical exercise (5km) • Provides mental stimulation • Provides fun and relaxation

• No experience necessary • Social interaction, meet people and make new friends • Suitable for all ages, singles, couples and families • Live entertainment • Variety of music • Non alcohol environment • Low Cost Allabout Squares invites you to come and try this amazing activity free during the month of February. Club nights are run on Thursday night at Glenburnie Hall, Glenelg Highway, starting at 7pm during school terms. For all enquires please contact Andrea on 0417 509 144.

all involved with the Community Event of the Year – Dimjalla Skate Park Event – YMCA Victoria South Western District Series (Mount Gambier). “We had many worthy nominations this year, making the decision to identify the recipients a difficult task,” Mayor Lee said. “Collectively, the nominees’ achievements have been vast. The benefits to our community and region are highly valued. Individually, I realise each of the recipients have not just seen the positive results of their contributions but also can take comfort in knowing that they chose to make that difference happen.” The City of Mount Gambier promotes the Australia Day Breakfast and awards ceremony as a smoke-free event and wishes to thank the supporters including Lakes Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, Goulburn Valley, She’s Apples, Collins Court Butcher, Bakers Delight, Moorak Bum Nuts and Dickins Delights.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - GET SMART... By ROBBIE TANSEL We live in a world of smart phones, smart televisions and stupid, stupid people. I think we all understand that it’s not a coincidence that as our technology has gotten smarter and smarter, we as a species have taken the opportunity to get dumber. Think about it, twenty years ago remembering people’s phone numbers was a useful skill to have. Rather than having to go to your address book (an actual book back then, not one of the apps on your phone) or a telephone book, if you’d committed some of the numbers you used regularly to your brain it would save you time. This among with many other things that you had to try to manage yourself, trained your brain to work in a certain way. People had to actually regularly engage their brain and expect some useful outcomes from it. With many things like this, we trained our brain to remember things making it better able to think in general. Likewise we don’t have to actually commit anything to our memories in our advanced modern world. There’s essentially no piece of information, fact or trivia you will ever want to or need to know that you can’t instantaneously access via your smart phone. Or you could just ask your wife. Wives know everything.

Who was that guy who played Hannibal in the A-Team? Is the lead singer of the Wallflowers Bob Dylan’s son? Where is the Ge’ez alphabet descended from? Is Megan Fox married? Why do you need to know that anyway? The fact that she’s married is not the reason that you have absolutely no shot with her you delusional fool. See a smart phone doesn’t help you to have sensible, rational thoughts. Back in the day, all of this type of information was available to people, but it was found in encyclopedias. For those people born in the last twenty years, encyclopedias were a series of over twenty huge books that parents bought so that their children could research and do their homework at home. You couldn’t carry them in your pocket though, so once again it was useful for people to try to commit some knowledge to memory so that they didn’t seem ignorant.

Because of Google and Wikipedia, people don’t need to know anything. By the way, for those who want to tell you not to trust Wikipedia, because it’s not necessarily accurate and people can write anything on it, studies comparing Encyclopedia Brittanica’s accuracy to Wikipedia found that Wikipedia was more accurate. I read that on Wikipedia. I don’t think it is just our memories that have suffered due to our smart devices either. We don’t have to be organised anymore. It wasn’t that long ago that you had to plan ahead. If your husband was going to pick up a few things from the shop, you needed to have a good think and make sure you considered all of the things you might need. Once he left the house there was no way to get word to him that you actually needed a carton of milk as well. It was too late. Our smart devices once again mean that almost any human we know is

lifestyle1.net | 08

contactable immediately. We can text, email or call them and make instant contact. While this is convenient, I’m sure again that it has had an effect on our ability to think and plan ahead. I think it has also made many of us more negative. I got an email from a knuckle-dragging, mouth breather at my day job recently saying things that I’m sure she wouldn’t have said to my face. It’s easy to be nasty and aggressive behind a keyboard, but most of these people don’t have the courage to say these things eye to eye with another person. I think that would be a pretty good guiding principle to have regarding sending emails: would I say these things to the person’s face? If you would, maybe you should just go and do that. You don’t have to know how to do anything either; you can just look it up on Youtube. Again, convenient but just more time staring at a screen and not really training your brain to work productively. I don’t get smart televisions at all to be honest. What extra features did a television really need? It needs to turn on, switch to a variety of stations and be clearly seen and heard. That is all the features I need it to have. No doubt Apple and Samsung are probably working on some sort of implant that can be surgically added to people to make them smarter anyway. I personally can’t wait for us to have these smart people and the iHuman 2.0 You can email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com or tie a note on the leg of a pigeon and point it towards the sun.

MJ DANCERS RETURN FROM BALLARAT WITH PLENTY OF SILVERWARE

MJ Dance Studio has done it again. Competing at the Follow Your Dreams (FYD) National Dance Competition in Ballarat, the Mount Gambier based dancers came home with a swag of individual, troupe and studio awards. More than 1000 competitors from 88 dance studios from all over Australia and New Zealand danced at FYD national competitions earlier this month and studio director Maria Slape could not be more thrilled with the results. “Special mention needs to go to our championship winners Asha Rodda and Ryan Thompson, who won their very first national titles,” Maria said. “I also am honoured that the studio won the studio spirit award – it means a lot to me that our studio is seen as a well mannered, kind, friendly group of people. I was also really happy to win

the overall troupe title. It was a first for us to pick a hip hop as our strongest routine but also fantastic that we are now not just not known for our lyrical and contemporary pieces. It was a really fun week and I love how relaxed and friendly these competitions are. Our dancers met people from all over the country, making really special friendships.” Major Awards National Troupe Winners Senior hip hop troupe Studio Spirit Award Senior Champion – Ryan Thompson Teen Champion – Asha Rodda Top 10 Senior Champion Lucie Milstead & Courtney Jolley Top 10 Teen Champion – Molly Clark Top 10 Pre Teen Champion Sarah McKinnon

DECISION TIME FOR DANCING QUEEN Mount Gambier High School student Courtney Jolley finished Year 12 at the end of last year with only one thing on her mind – further study in her area of passion – dancing. And one way or the other, that’s exactly what is set to happen, with the only thing left for Courtney to do is to decide which course she will take up. From the Joffrey Ballet in New York to Brent Street in Sydney, from the bachelor course in Queensland to contemporary giant Ev & Bow, also in Sydney, Courtney is spoilt for choice and front runner Spectrum, in Melbourne, could stake an even stronger claim for the talented teenager after she completed the summer school scholarship she has received from the dance school on the rise. “It will be a

good chance to look around and see if that’s really where I want to be,” Courtney said. That three day trial, of sorts, is at the end of the month and then it will be decision time. The studio offers a one or two year option and its director, while somewhat of a newcomer on the dance education scene, has a strong focus on future employment and has contacts throughout the industry. She trains the Melbourne Storm cheerleaders, has worked on the AFL grand final entertainment, does a swag of shows at Crown Casino and directed Menopause The Musical. Courtney has never really wavered from wanting a career in the industry, with commercial jazz her focus, while understanding versatility will always be the key. “I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket but it has made the decision harder.” It’s why she has deferred the Joffrey Ballet course, not totally discounting the prestigious New York school. “My dream job would to be on a cruise ship, to get a job with something like the Royal Caribbean Cruises,” she said. She also loved her turn in the musical Hairspray and certainly musical theatre is still on the

radar. Dancing since she was seven, the 17 year old spent most her dance education at MJ Dance Studio. “I saw High School Musical on TV and I loved it so much,” Courtney said. “It’s why I took up dancing.” It was a performance as a young child at the Glencoe Football Club skit night that led her to Mount Gambier’s premier dance school when, then MJ student, Cindy Von Duve, saw her perform and could see something in the youngster. Even then, Courtney attended the studio’s fun classes for two years but once she turned 10, studio director Maria Slape decided it was time to challenge the talented dancer and she started competition classes, including solo work. “I love the way you can express yourself through dance,” Courtney said. “You can show a range of emotions without saying a word.” She also loves performing – there is definitely no stage fright in the DNA of this dancer. “I love entertaining the audience,” Courtney said. “I love taking on a character. I feel like on the stage I can do anything.” And clearly she can with the recent graduate completing her Year 12 Dance course in Year 11 and receiving a merit. Add to that her swag of awards over the years, including her final competition as a MJ student – the Follow Your Dreams National Competition, in Ballarat, earlier this month. She was inducted into the Follow Your Dreams Hall of Fame, as well as taking out the top stage presence and expressive heart awards. “I had no idea I was going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, “Courtney

said. “It was a huge honour and was great to be alongside the other girls I have known through dance for years.” One of five to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, a competition where she was national champion two years ago, Courtney was also the highest scoring senior soloist at her final competition and finished in the top 10 in the senior champion. But with all the courses and plans on offer, there is the bigger picture. “I really want to be a dance teacher,” Courtney said. “Eventually I would love to have my own studio and teach kids and choreograph for young dancers.” She has already dipped her toe in the water at MJ, as an assistant teacher and also choreographing, not just many of her own routines but pieces for other dancers, as well. As she embarks on the next chapter, she has two people she

has to thank for the journey thus far. “Mum and dad have been so supportive and I am very grateful for their support,” Courtney said. “They drove me around everywhere and paying for everything. Not many parents would go through all of this.” Which is why Courtney was happy to strike the deal she did with her parents – she could pursue a career in dance if she completed Year 12. The MJ trailblazers that have gone before her, have also been an inspiration. The likes of Cristina d’Agostino and Euan Doidge, having made the successful transition from Mount Gambier dance studio to the stage, showed dancers like Courtney that it can be done. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have believed it was possible. It’s overwhelming but it’s possible and that’s because we have seen others be successful.”

SWAPPING THE STAGE FOR A BACKROOM CAREER Imogen Harkness has had a big couple of months. She has graduated from both Tenison Woods College and

MJ Dance Studio and has locked in her immediate future with tertiary study in Melbourne. But after 15 years on

stage, with some incredible individual and studio success, Imogen is set to stay in the entertainment field but is heading behind the scenes. She is headed to Deakin University and enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Arts in Film and Television. “I want to be a cinematographer or an editor,” Imogen said. “I love the idea of sorting out what the pictures will be and working out how the story will go together and things like that.” Despite years of performing onstage, it has been her brief stints on the sidelines that have really captured her interest. Imogen has directed a play at school and she recently provided the green screen backdrop to what was her final MJ concert. “I have made some home videos of our holidays and just tinkered a bit but I am mostly self taught and I am looking forward to some serious education.” Imogen was accepted into three courses and it was tempting for her to take up the Swinburne offer. “It’s a two year course with a trip to Africa and all sorts of amazing opportunities,” Imogen said. “But it is an elite course and I feel like I’m better off doing the three year course and start from scratch. I know I have a lot to learn.” Although to be fair – Imogen lifestyle1.net | 28

has been training for this opportunity her whole life. “It all started with the movies I grew up watching,” she said. “Movies were always a big deal in our family.” Imogen’s passion is drama, especially true stories. ‘My current favourite is Unbroken – the movie directed by Angelina Jolie.” It is safe to say, Imogen watches a whole lot of movies that aren’t usually on her friend’s playlist. She is also a huge fan of the work of the offbeat Tim Burton. Imogen has already had to select her four specialist electives for her first year in the Deakin course and she has opted for photography, creative writing, film study and drama. And the 18 year old believes her years of dance as well as her school drama studies will stand her in good stead as she carves a future. “I think it will help me understand how the performers feel,” she said. Her recent family holiday to the United States also fuelled her appetite for a role in the movie industry with a VIP tour of Universal Studios. “I got to see the sets of The Grinch, World War Z and King Kong,” she said. “I even got to see some new sets. It gave me another perspective of what’s involved in making a film. At one stage we were on the set of Back To The Future

outside the city hall and across the road basically was the set for Hairspray Live.” March 6 is the start date for Imogen’s behind the camera journey. “I’m excited and nervous,” she said. “But I do have friends studying in Ballarat so that makes you feel a bit more comfortable.” As for her dancing – she had sensibly been winding back her commitment as she moved onto the next chapter in her life. “I stopped doing solos and just worked on troupes,” Imogen said. “It will be a bit of a shock to the system but it’s a good change and this is the field I want to work in. I will miss dancing but most of all I will miss the people. I’ve been there for 15 years.” And before she has even started her official study, she has a to-do list. ‘I am really going to work on my social media presence,” she said. “It’s a competitive industry so I want to make sure I have plenty of work out there. Putting short films and things like that on facebook, you tube and twitter. I have to use social media to my advantage. I need to get my stuff out there and build a network.”

VETERANS GOLF After a summer layoff, 74 keen veteran golfers turned up at Kingston last Monday, raring to go. Millicent and Naracoorte each had 13 players, 12 came from Kingston, 11 from Mount Gambier, seven each from Bordertown and Beachport, five from Blue Lake, three from Lucindale, two from Robe, and one from Penola. Naturally enough a local, Milan Hodak, enjoying a day off from his usual council duties, took out the First Division with 44 points. Runner up was a fledgling vet, Mark “Sloper” Davies, fresh from a turf inspection, with 43 points, and third was Terry Zohs with 41, currently enjoying a hot streak. Second Division again went to a local, Bob Bald, with 43 points, from Keith Couzner, on 35, and Herman Van Der Heul, with 34. The ball rundown was for 33 points or better, with the hard fought Ross Orchard Trophy going to Bryon Coe and Colin Rex. David Seymour was nearest the pin on the sixth. The next Sout East Veterans Golf outing is at Robe on January 30.

LOCAL SPORT CRICKET SCOREBOARD Two huge efforts with the ball tihs weekend - one in Barber Shield and the other at the opposite end of the spectrum in the Under 12 Sims Shield. North Gambier pacceman Scott Kenny ripped through Penola taking 8/10 in what was his first five-for at any level of cricket. He bowled 10 maidens in his 16 over spell and after skipper Tim Young took the first wicket of the innings, removing Mark Smith, Kenny then proceeded to take the remaining eight wickets, with a run out also part of the demolition. Kenny then made it 10 for the match with 2/14 in the second innings as North powered to an outright victory. Mil Lel youngster Toby Grigg also showed considerable prowess with the ball taking the rarest of feats in cricket - a double hat trick with four wickets in four balls. Grigg’s first wicket caught and bowled, followed by two catches in the field, before he bowled his fourth victim. Grigg’s devastating spell, with the double hat trick coming over two overs, saw Kongorong slump from 3/13 to 7/14 and not surprisingly, Mil Lel was able to secure the victory.
