COVER - AWARD WINNING SALTS OF THE EARTH MOUNT GAMBIER Cathy and Paul Beckman opened Salts of the Earth in Mount Gambier at the end of November 2015. It is currently still the only SOTE in South Australia. Salts of the Earth was founded in Melbourne in 2010 by David and Katharine Lindsay to offer a natural, effective symptom relief for people with various skin and respiratory conditions, sinus and hayfever, cold and flu,,sleeping and snoring, anxiety disorders, sports recovery, general well being and more. Salt therapy, also known as halo therapy, has been around in Eastern Europe for hundreds of years. Salt therapy is a medically proven, natural and complementary therapy designed to help relieve congestion, inflammation and allergies of the airways and skin and is part of a holistic approach to the wellbeing of everyone. It is important to remember that salt therapy is not an alternative therapy, but a complementary one. It is designed to relieve the symptoms of a condition and work in conjunction with existing medication. A halogenerator grinds up pharmaceutical grade salt into minute particles, which become airborne when dispersed into one of our three salt rooms. Salt used is a natural anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-viral. The dry salt particles are inhaled while relaxing for 45 minutes to relieve inflammation and loosen congestion to allow easier and improved breathing.

It also helps reduce inflammation and irritation caused by skin conditions when the salt comes in contact with the skin. When first visiting Mount Gambier’s salt centre you will be offered a complimentary consultation in the new private consultation room so the salt therapist can gather information from you about your health and general well being. You will then be advised correctly on how to get the desired relief you are looking for. Management plans are recommended for ongoing conditions if needed and these are tailor made for the clients’ condition and symptons. Salts of the Earth has plans with unlimited sessions allowing you to utilise their salt centre as much as you want for various prices depending on the time frame. As an example - You can come for as little as $39 a week, offering you unlimited sessions. Or you can come once a week for wellbeing or sports recovery for only $28. During the time you are coming to the salt centre your progress and health improvements will be reviewed. They have three rooms in their salt centre Adults’ Room - The communal adult’s room is a relaxation haven. Massaging recliner chairs, warm lighting and soft music ensure a tranquil environment. Read a book, meditate, listen to music or have a nap. Children’s Room - The children’s room
is a utopia for kids, a salty sandpit stocked with bean bags, toys, games, movies and more. Their youngest clients have such a ball they don’t even know they’re receiving the benefits of salt therapy! Private Room - The private room has been designed for people with skin conditions, compromised immune systems or anyone that may be contagious. People with contagious conditions or with cystic fibrosis are always booked into the private room so they are not exposed to other clients. Each room is cleaned, sterilised and ventilated after every session. For people out of town, you can do a couple of sessions in a day to maximise the opportunity of being in town. The centre is open 7 days a week and later on three nights to make sure it is accessible to everyone. Salts of the Earth Mount Gambier also stocks an extensive range of Himalayan salt lamps, selenite crystal lamps, Himalayan cooking salt, bath soaks, candles, diffusers and many more gift ideas. “To be able to help people from premature babies through to the elderly and give them relief and a better quality of life is so rewarding. I can’t do anything that I don’t believe in. I knew this could benefit so many people in Mt Gambier and surrounding areas. I did a lot of research on it, knew in my heart it was the right thing to offer to help people here and thought that our community was ready to embrace this

WATER WORKS - A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION BY PAUL WEIS therapy and I was right! It has been very well received and supported,” Cathy said. Salts of the Earth Mt Gambier recently won an award at a SOTE convention in Melbourne for an emerging franchise of the year, being in the top three franchises in Australia in the first couple of months of business. Being a regional town, the Mount Gambier franchise has surprised the owners of SOTE and exceeded their expectations. “They were reluctant at first to open a centre in Mount Gambier but with much persistence, I was able to convince them that with my passion and belief for this therapy I knew it would be a success,” Cathy said. AUSTRALIA’S NEWEST SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP Beachport Surf Life Saving Club is on a mission and after that past 12 months it looks like it is mission possible. “Last year was a very productive year for the Beachport Surf Life Saving Club, and we have made significant advancements in our quest to become a fully operational club,” said club president Peter Phillips. It was in July 2015 that a community meeting was held to ascertain interest in setting up a club is the seaside town. With 50 people at the meeting, the support was clearly there as so the push began to present a case to Surf Life Saving South Australia (SLSSA) for Beachport to become South Australia’s third regional club – following in the footsteps of Robe and Whyalla. A steering committee, working in conjunction with SLSSA, ran four Come ‘N’ Try sessions in the summer of 2015/16 with good numbers attending the Nippers and youth sessions. “Since that time, the club has been working very hard behind the scenes to build on our success,” Peter said. And
success has come with some significant milestones racking up for the fledgling organisation, including becoming the newest surf life saving club, not just in South Australia, but nationwide. “Anyone who has had anything to do with clubs will know that an incredible amount of work has gone into this as we are not just a standalone club, but a club that needed to be fully endorsed and approved by SLSSA,” Peter said. “During this time also we have been building up our training
to where we now have four Bronze Medallion holders and more than a dozen Surf Rescue Certificate holders. We currently have development plans before council and are working closely with other community groups ensure we continue to grow.” And that growth looks assured, given the support of the community and SLSSA. “Leah, of indivi designs, has developed a club logo, incorporating the ideas of our local kids,” Peter said. “SLSSA have also approved an IRB for us and we are awaiting delivery of that. We have also received our first grant of $1500 thanks to Infigen Energy, which will allow us to buy much needed equipment for our Nipper and youth program this year.” And the challenge is on to introduce even more young people to surf life saving with the club running seven sessions this season with January 29 the next session, with times for Nippers and youth. “These sessions will focus on fun and practical sessions for both groups, but also allow the youth to be trained for awards,” Peter said. “As with last year we will run a BBQ after
each session to raise money for our club.” A membership drive is running in conjunction with the Nipper and youth sessions. There are costs associated with membership but you can also pay $15 for up to 2 sessions of the nipper or youth programs. If you think you would like to continue then this cost is taken off your membership price. Membership is $100 per family (regardless of amount of children) or $40 per person. Children under the age of 12 required to have an adult to join with them for $10 extra. For further information on how to join please email email@example.com and you can follow the club on Facebook - find them by searching Beachport Surf Life Saving and remember to like the page. “This is a club that is here to stay,” Peter said. “We encourage anyone at or above the age of five to come down and give this a go. With family memberships we will be encouraging the parents to not only be present but also get trained up with
Making Life Easier in 2017
your kids. It’s one of the few unique activities that adults and kids can do together. I would like to also take the opportunity to thank all involved both formally and informally who have helped us get to this point. Without a considerable amount of work already done this would not be possible. We are expecting another successful season down at the beach and look forward to meeting last year’s attendees but also new faces too.” The remaining sessions: SUNDAY 29th JANUARY - SESSION 3 SUNDAY 12th FEBRUARY- SESSION 4 (at Robe) SUNDAY 26th FEBRUARY - SESSION 5 SUNDAY 12th MARCH, - SESSION 6 (to be confirmed) SUNDAY 26th MARCH - SESSION 7 SURF CLUB FAMILY FUN DAY Nippers from 10am Youth from 11.15am

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Pumpkin & Ricotta Pie 1 kilo kent pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into 2cm wedges 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 teaspoon chilli flakes 1 leek, thinly sliced 800g firm ricotta 1/4 cup (20g) fresh breadcrumbs 1/2 cup (40g) finely grated vegetarian hard cheese 1/4 cup flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
400g can brown lentils 1 egg, lightly beaten Pastry 2 cups plain flour 1 teaspoon salt 150g butter 1 egg 1-2 tablespoons iced water
Method Preheat the oven to 200C. Grease a 22cm round, springform pan and line the base with non-stick baking paper. To make pastry, process flour and butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add salt, egg and iced water and process until mixture just sticks together. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Shape into a disc. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Toss the pumpkin, olive oil, garlic, chilli and salt and pepper in a large bowl. Arrange on a large baking tray lined with baking paper and roast for 30 minutes, or until golden and tender. Meanwhile, in a large bowl mix the leek, ricotta, breadcrumbs, cheese and parsley together. Set aside. Cut two-thirds off the pastry and reserve the smaller piece. Roll out the larger piece on a lightly floured sheet of non-stick baking paper to a 25cm round. Carefully flip the pastry over your rolling pin and peel away the paper. Line the base and sides of the prepared tin with the pastry easing it into the edges and pressing into the side, taking care not to stretch the pastry. Divide the ricotta mixture into three. Spread a third of the ricotta mixture over the base. Layer half the pumpkin and lentils on top. Spread over half the remaining ricotta and top with remaining pumpkin and lentils. Finish with the ricotta and smooth the surface. Brush the rim of the pastry with the beaten egg. Roll out the remaining piece of pastry on a sheet of floured baking paper to a 5mm-thick, 22.5cm round, then place over filling. Trim edges, then, using a fork or your fingers, crimp edges to seal. Brush pastry with beaten egg. Using a sharp knife, make four small slits in the top. Reduce oven to 180C, then bake for 1 hour or until pastry is golden. Cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing. lifestyle1.net | 06

SIMPLY THE BEST There’s been a lot of talk in the public about Australia’s education standards and where we sit in the world . Many a hypothesis has been bandied around as to how to attract the best possible teachers. Well there is some good news. Mount Gambier High School’s Laura Day, who topped the Limestone Coast region with her 2016 Year 12 results – an ATAR or 99.35 – has her eyes firmly set on joining the teaching fraternity, in fact, working with children has been a plan she put in motion well before most kids have even thought about what they might like to do when they leave school. “Being a teacher and working with kids is what I’ve always wanted to do,” Laura said. And she is dipping her toe in the water this year, spending her gap year as a au pair in England – a long held plan, that saw her even keep a log book of her babysitting gigs, complete with time spent and comments from the parents. It is safe to say that Laura has left no stone unturned and not surprisingly secured herself a position, researching and organising the 10 month placement on her own. She has also been working in a Year 2 classroom at McDonald Park School one day a week and that has only affirmed that she wants to work with children. Her first option for study is taking up a primary school teaching degree at Flinders University but Laura is prepared to see what her au pair adventure brings first. “I’m not 100 percent certain what I want to study but I am certain I want to work with kids.” With such a high ATAR, there have
been some whispers that perhaps she should change her plans and pursue a university course befitting such a high entrance score. “But I’m not interested in anything else and it’s what I’ve always wanted to do,” Laura said. “I worked hard because I wanted to do my best, not because I wanted a high ATAR so I could get into anything.” Laura left for the UK on January 17 – a trip she not only planned herself but saved for, as well, through her babysitting and part time work at KFC. Her original plan was to find a family in the US. “But most of them were looking for older au pairs,” Laura said. “Families in the UK seemed happier to have younger girls working for them.” It sees Laura heading to a family with two boys, aged 5 and 7. “I live with them, get the boys ready and walk them to school, make their lunch, walk them home from school, organise tea, get them ready for bed,” she said. “I basically run their daily routine.” Heading off with the family for holidays has already been floated and Laura is also hoping to fit in some travel around Europe, possibly with older sister Maddie, when her 10 month stint is up. “I am a bit nervous about going but I’ve wanted to do it for so long and while I know I will miss my family, I would be mad at myself if I didn’t do this,” Laura said. “It will be a good experience for me and I’ve always wanted to travel.” Laura is also the poster child for working consistently throughout your Year 12 journey, staying on top of your workload and not leaving work to the last minute. Laura certainly isn’t
presenting herself as the model student, in fact, by her own admission, she really only developed the study habits and commitment to doing her best when she hit Year 10. “It was definitely from Year 10 that I put in a lot more effort and a lot more time,” she said. “I started to try and get ahead as much as I could and be as organised as possible.” She also continued to make time for her sport – tennis and netball. “It was good just to get out, run around and see other people,” Laura said. “It was the perfect break and then you could get back to your work after that. I actually felt I concentrated better after I had been running around.” Laura admits the start of her Year 12 year was tough but then as she established a routine and
knew exactly what was on her plate, she was able to be more relaxed, while still working hard to achieve her best. Laura studied Psychology, Child Studies, English, Maths and the research project, where her research centred on how long kids sit in school and how it affects their overall health. With the next chapter of her life, the au pair journey, already underway, one thing’s for sure – Laura is set to capture as much of her adventure as possible. “I got a camera and I’ve never really been into photography, so I’ve been practising at different locations around here,” Laura said. “I just wanted to be able to take good photos of everything I get to see while I’m travelling.”

MENTORS INVITED TO JOIN DRIVING PROGRAM A FRESH TAKE ON A BLAST FROM THE PAST Do you want to change the lives of disadvantaged youth? Now is your chance to make an impact on the future faces of our community by becoming a L2P Learner Driver Mentor as part of the Glenelg L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program. Interested volunteer mentors are invited to attend the 2017 L2P Learner Driver Mentor training course on January 21 to learn more about the L2P Program and how best to supervise learner drivers. If successful, volunteer mentors will then assist learner drivers in working towards gaining the required 120 hours of driving practice by providing driving supervision for a minimum of one hour per week. The program currently runs in Portland, Heywood and Casterton and mentors are required across all three sites. Current L2P Learner Driver Mentor Jan Lineker encouraged community members to sign up for the training course to help make a difference. “I have been involved with the program for the past two years and it is a very rewarding role,” she said. “It is great to be able to pass on your skills to another person, who can then return the favour to the next generation.” Mrs Lineker also made note on the rapport she has developed with the learner drivers she has supervised. “As a community we owe it ourselves to help our young people and on the whole, the drivers I have mentored have been incredibly grateful,” she said. “I’ve personally seen one of my graduates get her licence and gain employment as a result… it’s great to be have been a part
of that milestone.” The L2P Learner Driver Mentor training will be held on Saturday, January 21, at the Glenelg Shire Council offices in Cliff Street, Portland, from 9am – 4pm with all training materials and food provided. To learn more, or to register your interest, please contact program coordinator Rachel Brough on (03)5522 2334 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. au. Furthermore, if you are a learner driver aged between 16-20 years of age and are having difficulty achieving the mandatory 120 hours of driving practice, please contact program coordinator Rachel Brough to discuss your eligibility on (03)5522 2334 or email rbrough@glenelg. vic.gov.au The Glenelg L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program is delivered by Council in partnership with VicRoads through TAC funding. Fond memories of family holidays spent in 1970s style caravans? Well, this is a trip down memory lane you won’t want to miss. Limoncello Caravan Bar is a renovated caravan based in the Limestone Coast, joining the pop up revolution “So many people commented at the launch that they remember a caravan like this one,” Tamara said. “It’s a bit nostalgic for sure.” The Limoncello Caravan Bar is the brainchild of well known Mount Gambier vocalist Tamara Seeley. When the singer-songwriter launched her EP Gold Armour in March 2015 at the Mount Gambier Golf Club she scoured the region for a pop up bar to be part of the event. “I wanted something a little bit quirky,” Tamara said. But there was nothing and clearly she filed it away. After a trip to Canada and the United States to promote her EP and pursue her singing career, Tamara was back on home soil attending a friend’s wedding on a property outside of Melbourne, and there it was – a pop up bar – just like she had envisaged. “I thought ‘that is what Mount Gambier needs’,” she said. “I put a post on facebook looking for a caravan and it went from there.” That was almost a year ago and after a trip to Heywood to pick up, what would become her Limoncello Caravan Bar, the process well and truly began. “I’m lucky my dad is a builder and he renovated the caravan for food,” Tamara said. “It needed a lot of work.” But on December 20, eight months after the project started in earnest, Tamara launched her pop up bar to rave reviews. From her signature drink – the Tom Collins with a twist – to the retro, funky

look of the caravan, Limoncello Caravan Bar seemed to tick all the boxes. Already with enquiries to weddings and more expected after a stint at the Blok Gardens Bridal Expo at the weekend, Tamara is at pains to point out the pop up bar is not just for weddings but for private parties, business functions and anything in between. “If you have an out of the box idea, get in touch with me, I’m creative -the weirder the better,” she said. “We want to customise each function and work really closely with the individual. If you want a themed event we can do it. If you want to supply your own alcohol you can. If you want us to do all the leg work that’s fine, too.” Staff and glassware come with the caravan and Tamara has already forged relationships with Redman Wines, Koonara Wines and Coola Road Wines, seeing the project as a chance to showcase local drops. “We have some
of the best wine in the world in this region – why not promote that as well,” she said. Specialising in cocktails and drinks, Tamara is already looking at the possibility of installing a coffee machine. Only a few weeks into business and her mind is already planning the next step, the next innovation. Keep an eye over the next week for a promotional video which will give fans of her music a taste of her first new music in 12 months – a Valentine’s Day release, inspired by the caravan and her love. She will be shooting a video to go with the single and is excited to be combining her music and her new business. And it will be a combination heading forward with Tamara equally committed to both ventures. “The reality of the music industry is it’s hard to make consistent money from it and I thought what else can I do that is a bit of fun,” she said. “It is quite daunting setting up a new business but with the support network I have, it’s a lot easier.” Tamara teaches singing once a week at Tenison Woods College and also has private students. She will continue to perform around this region and is looking to lift her profile in Adelaide and Melbourne. “The industry changes all the time and it is hard to know sometimes what step to take next,” Tamara said. “I am going to make contact with some artists in Adelaide and Melbourne and head to some singersongwriter nights and things like that. I love performing in this region, though. You get amazing support at regional events. I helped with the Winter Sessions last year and we got 250-300 people to those and proved something different can work. I think the jazz university, the rail lands and the pop up events that are starting

AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS HEADING TO THE SEASIDE IN 2017 Port MacDonnell will join hundreds of towns and regions across the nation in celebrating Australia Day in 2017 when the Football Club and community members host the District Council of Grant’s Australia Day Celebration on Thursday, January 26, Australia Day is a special day for all Australians to come together and celebrate our community and what we love about the country we call home, and I invite everyone in the community to attend our celebration” said District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage. The Australia Day Celebration will be held at the Port MacDonnell Football Oval on Thursday, January 26, from 11.30am. The free family focused event will feature live music by the Mount Gambier City Band, free merry-go-round and jumping castle for the children, giveaways, and a display of vintage cars.
Method Heat oil in a large saucepan over low heat, add onion, carrot and celery and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add garlic and tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes, then increase heat to medium, add wine and allow to bubble for 2-3 minutes. Add rosemary, bay leaf, passata and stock, reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes. Add beans and cook for a further 5 minutes, adding more stock or water if the sauce is too thick. Stir through parsley and season. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti in a large pan of boiling, salted water until al dente. Drain, toss through sauce and serve with parmesan.
There is shelter under the grandstand and the community are also encouraged to bring their own chair, table, or picnic rug to sit on the oval, but please don’t bring any pets, glass or alcohol to the event. A BBQ meat and salad lunch will be available for a gold coin contribution and the Port MacDonnell Football Club bar will be open for refreshments. This year’s special guest is Australia Day Ambassador John (Jack) Cahill. For six decades Jack has combined his commitment to sport with his working life. An icon of the Port Adelaide Football Club in both SANFL and AFL, Cahill has played more than 266 games in the SANFL and has coached 695 games. Jack grew up in Orroroo and his influence, rivalled only arguably by Fos Williams and the Williams family, at Alberton has seen the Port Adelaide Football Club
best & fairest award named after the multi-premiership player and coach the Jack Cahill Medal. Official proceedings will begin at 1.15pm with a rendition of the National Anthem, which will be followed by a citizenship ceremony, presentation by Jack Cahill, and the announcement of the Council’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year Awards. For further information please contact the District Council of Grant on (08)8721 0444. Above - The 2016 Grant District Council Australia Day Award winners. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - ON THE ROAD AGAIN... By ROBBIE TANSEL Is there anything as enjoyable as taking a five hour car trip with a four year old? I mean sure, you could book yourself in for a colonic irrigation. I hear that stepping on bees repeatedly gives quite a nice buzz. Anyone who loves a good time could sharpen a stick and poke themselves in the eye repeatedly. And who doesn’t love spending a night plucking unwanted hair? But do any of these things compare with the joy of spending five hours in a car with a little monster? After spending today in a car with Shaquille driving from Mount Gambier to Adelaide, I’ve worked out what makes this experience most taxing; little people don’t have an understanding of time and distance. I think part of the problem is that most children spend the majority of their time with their mothers. It is difficult to learn these complex concepts from a person who routinely uses phrases like not far to refer to anything from two centimetres
to two hundred kilometres, and pretty soon meaning anything from a minute to three months. Having alienated a large part of my readership, let me refocus our frustration and anger to the cause of the problem: the little creature in the back seat. His lack of understanding of time and distance will manifest in him asking if we are “there” yet before we have even gone past the Marketplace on our way out of town. At this point you as the adult can have a lovely discussion with him about the fact that wherever he is, he is always “here”; he can never be “there” because when he gets there he’ll be “here” again. This may give you satisfaction being so philosophical, but will do nothing to solve the problem. We spent the whole five hours being asked about every five minutes if we were there yet. There is only one answer that stops that question being asked, and it is “yes” and only works when you are actually there. Now before anyone tells me that the best option is to keep junior entertained on the trip, let me tell you about the world of entertainment available to him. We have headrest DVD players so he can put on his favorite movies and watch to his content. His mother has made an
activity folder with pictures to colour in, mazes to complete and plenty of other fun. He also has other little car games and magnetic jigsaws to complete. I don’t know about you, but back in my day the entertainment centred around identifying road kill and trying to keep my legs from sticking to the extremely hot in the Summer sun, leather seats. He has more entertainment options than the average country show. On our next trip I’m thinking of booking the Wiggles to drive us to Adelaide in The Big Red Car and provide entertainment on the journey. Back in my youth, parents could make the threat of leaving their youngster on the side of the road to walk home. Not only could they make the threat, they could follow through as I found out on one particular trip. I spent a week sleeping rough on the mean streets of Keith as I wasn’t sure whether I should walk back to the Mount or head for Adelaide. You probably couldn’t really do it back then to be honest but having plenty of experience with living in the grey bar motel, Dad decided that it was still a preferable possibility compared to spending another couple of hours in the car with a grizzling child. He also lifestyle1.net | 28
realised that if he didn’t remove me from the car it would probably still result in jail time except for murder. Some parts of that story may have been exaggerated or completely made up for weak comic purposes. It wasn’t Keith; it was Tintinara. While I’m grizzling about this holiday, since when do caravan parks stack their on-site cabins with minibar snacks and beverages, complete with motel minibar pricing? Four dollars fifty for a Cherry Ripe? Five dollars for a can of Coke? A sign reading, “Please let us know if you’d like your minibar restocked”. Let me give you a hint. If I can afford those prices, and think I have enough cash to ask you to restock it so I can have another go, then I’m probably not staying in a cabin at a caravan park. Don’t get me wrong, I quite like staying
in a caravan park cabin but if I can afford to waste that sort of money, you’ll find me at the Hilton. I’ve still got to make the return journey with our little pride and joy later this week. If you find a little boy wandering aimlessly around your town this week, his name is Shaquille, he needs to be fed about every five minutes, and likes the movie Ghostbusters. Email me at email@example.com and when I’ve bought myself some new duct tape I’ll come and collect him.

the expertise of the international standard performers and their network of contacts to develop young talent in this region, she wanted a scholarship program established and she wanted to get together a committee to coordinate her operatic connection and start to develop a vocal hub in the tradition of how Generations in Jazz has put Mount Gambier on the international music map. With Michelle and Mattia set to return for a third consecutive year, with a program incorporating workshops for local singers, the closely formed connection with Melbourne based vocal teacher Gary Nardella, who has run workshops independent of the operatic performance, especially with students with language difficulties and speech impediments, a board now in place – Limestone Coast Opera Inc. – and now scholarships, thanks to some generous funding, it appears what even Chris felt could be a pipe dream, is now looming as a genuine reality. Bill DeGaris chairs the board, which is just over 12 months old, and he is thrilled that Michelle and Mattia are committed to performing and working in this region. “It is great they are coming from Italy again to provide us with an operatic concert but we wanted to make it more and more beneficial to the Limestone Coast area than just a concert,” Bill said. “The relationship with Gary Nardella is part of that development. We want to give the skills necessary to children and other people who want to perform and it doesn’t have to be opera, it can be musical theatre, contemporary, any number of styles.” Michelle and Mattia’s performances are supplemented by local choirs, including Tenison Woods
College, Phoenix Studio, Naracoorte Singers, St Martins College and Mount Gambier High School, and other local performers will also have a chance to grace the stage, including the three scholarship winners – the first year the scholarship program has been operational. There is a Limestone Coast Resident Scholarship and two junior scholarships, each worth $2500. “It is not just about the financial reward,” Mr De Garis said. “The contacts with Michelle and Mattia (pictured above) and the fact, if they want to head to Italy or anywhere in Europe they will have contacts to help them, is invaluable.” Establishing that program and being able to extend the vocal program from the March 4 & 5 performances to incorporate workshops and master classes from February 27, has been made possible by the securing of sponsorship and funding by the

NEW ROLE FOR PIONEERS FAVOURITE It’s a New Year and for Pioneers championships captain Matt Sutton, it is the latest in a run of new things in his life - a new car, new house, new contract with the Pioneers, and now a new job, as he sinks his teeth into the newly created basketball development manager role for Basketball Mount Gambier. The Icehouse holds plenty of amazing memories for the four time South Conference and two time National Championship skipper and now it will become his home away from home – from his basketball development role to Pioneers training, Sutton will be spending a lot of time on the Icehouse boards. The basketball development role sees Sutton working hand in hand with coaches and players alike as he looks to increase participation in the sport. “School clinics and special events will be a big focus,” Sutton said. It is as if this role was tailor made for Sutton. “A role in
basketball has always been my dream,” he said. And with a solid background working in the education sector, combining working with kids and the sport he loves, has encapsulated his two passions in one role. Sutton admits, pursuing his dream career has ironically been stymied at times by his elite playing career. “When you play elite sport so much of what you have to do happens after hours and that means opportunities are hard to come by,” he said. “I feel very fortunate, very lucky, that this has some my way.” Sutton has been in the role since late last year and brings to the table a Certificate IV in Coaching & Development. “I have been coaching and working with kids my whole life.” Sutton has called Mount Gambier home since 2010 and while the on court success has certainly been a huge reason behind staying in the Blue Lake City, Sutton happily calls it home. “When I moved here it was an opportunity to get out of Adelaide for a little while,” he said. “I was ready for a change – it was as simple as that. I had no expectations of staying but things have just worked out that way, it’s worked out really well.” Sutton admits there will be some trial and error, given the development role is a new role. “There are plenty of guidelines
HAVE YOUR SAY ON AUSTRALIAN KELPIE CENTRE
PHOTO COURTESY OF GAVIN MALE from Basketball SA and I certainly have some ideas about things I would like to implement.” And with his one year playing deal with the Pioneers signed, sealed and delivered, Sutton is looking to make his mark off the court now in his new role. “I want to play forever but understand that you can’t,” he said. “This job is something I imagine doing for a long time. I am looking forward to how it develops and giving it my best.” Sutton also said the resurgence of the NBL, as well as continued, sustained interest in the NBA, means it is a good time to cash in on interest in all things basketball.
The Australian Kelpie Centre is coming to Casterton, and Glenelg Shire Council is inviting residents to have their say on what they want to see included. The Glenelg Shire Council recently received grant approval from
08 8724 7111 | www.lifestyle1.net | email@example.com lifestyle1.net | 34
the Australian Government through National Stronger Regions Fund to construct a Kelpie Interpretive Centre in Casterton, incorporating the Visitor Information Centre, meeting room and a Kelpie display. This new Australian Kelpie Centre will promote the history of Casterton and the birthplace of the Kelpie, and will help to increase visitors to the Casterton region. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank urged community members to put forth their ideas to help finalise the concept designs for the centre. “I encourage all residents to submit their feedback on what they envision for the Kelpie centre,” she said. “There are some fantastic suggestions that have already put forward, but I am sure there are many ideas that have not yet been voiced that could greatly improve how the centre is purpose-built. It is an exciting time for community members to get involved and help form what will be an important asset not just to Casterton, but to the greater region and our tourism attraction also.” Over the past decade there has been much discussion on what should be considered as part of the designs for Kelpie Centre, with suggestions including public art installations, interactive displays and car parking for caravan and RVs. These comments are being considered, however residents are encouraged to submit further feedback to help shape the development of this valuable community asset. Consultation on the Australian Kelpie Centre will close 5pm, Tuesday, February 28. To submit your feedback, please visit www.yoursay. glenelg.vic.gov.au or call 1300 GLENELG.

HOW MANY IS ENOUGH? Is eleven councillors the right number of councillors to manage the affairs of the Naracoorte Lucindale Council? This is one of the questions the Naracoorte Lucindale Council is asking the community as part of a review into its Representation Structure. Since 2000, Naracoorte Lucindale Council’s structure has consisted of a Mayor and 10 councillors, who are all elected from the whole community. The council area is not divided into wards – therefore each councillor is elected at large and represents the interests of the whole council area. To start the discussion on council’s structure a Representation Review Options paper has been prepared which examines council’s current structure, the advantages and disadvantages of a Mayor verses a Chairperson, the number of councillors appropriate for the district taking into consideration the number of electors and the advantages and disadvantages of dividing the council area into two or three wards or maintaining the current structure where Councillors represent the whole council area. “The review provides the opportunity to plan and implement changes that will better reflect the future requirements of the community and to determine whether council and the community would benefit from an alteration to council’s composition or structure. The review does not prevent the current structure being retained and may determine that the current structure meets the needs of the Council and community,” Mayor Vickery said. Copies of the Options Paper can be viewed at the Naracoorte and Lucindale Council offices and online at www.yoursay.naracoortelucindale. sa.gov.au. Members of the community can have a say on the Options Paper until 3 March 2017 by completing a survey available at Council offices or online at www. yoursay.naracoortelucindale.sa.gov. au. Written submissions are also invited either via email to council@ nlc.sa.gov.au or post to PO Box 555, Naracoorte SA 5271. The review must ensure that any changes made benefit rate payers, arrangements reflect communities of interest and avoid separations of such communities, voters can participate in decisions on local matters, and council is able to co-operate with other councils and govern effectively. All feedback received will be discussed in a Representation Review Report that will inform the public of the ‘in principle’ future composition and structure of the council. During April further community feedback will be sought on the ‘in principle’ composition and structure. The Local Government Act 1999 requires that Council must conduct a review of its representation at least every eight years.
KEY FREIGHT ROAD UPGRADES ONLY MONTHS AWAY Long awaited works to fix Glenelg Shire’s broken freight roads will begin in the coming months. The State Government yesterday confirmed its $40 million investment for upgrades on sections of the Henty Highway and Princes Highway had been fast tracked to ensure works could be completed this dry season. The safety improvements include the Portland Ring Road, Henty Highway north of Heywood and Princes Highway between Dartmoor and Heywood. The works will include rebuilding broken sections of road, resurfacing and shoulder sealing to improve safety. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the upgrades would improve productivity for industry and the safety of motorists. “I applaud the State Government for fast tracking this investment to ensure works can be completed as a matter of urgency,” Cr Rank said. “These major arterial roads are the bloodline of our economic future, ensuring timber, dairy, livestock and grain get to market for export, and tourists flow into our region. Glenelg Shire roads have been rated the worst in Victoria and it is encouraging to see the government recognise the importance of getting these works completed now, ensuring we do not face another wet winter dodging potholes which put the safety of motorists at risk.” Cr Rank thanked the local community for supporting council’s Fix Our Key Freight Road campaign, which had been successful in attracting a total of $80 million from the State and Federal Governments. “It has been through the community’s ongoing campaign efforts, and support of our social media campaigns which attracted more than 200,000 supporters, that this funding has become a reality,” she said. “The hard work of the Green Triangle Freight Action Plan committee, who built a strong business case illustrating the importance of these road works not only to the local community but to the state and national economy, provided a formula for road funding which other municipalities are now trying to follow. This work was a game changer for this region and we look forward to seeing the benefits of this hard work as VicRoads begins work in the coming months. However, the work does not end here. Our lobbying efforts will continue as we campaign to attract more funding, a further $100 million is still required to fix these key arterial roads to ensure our local industries can continue to deliver their goods safely and efficiently.”

2-4-2 COMPETITION WINNERS
Mount Gambier & District Tennis Association action might not officially return to the court until this Saturday but some of the association’s best players have been in action in Adelaide, returning some from Country Week with plenty of silverware. The association sent three junior teams to the team event – 16 & Under Boys; 14 & Under Girls and 12 & Under Girls – with the 16 & Under and 14 & Under teams returning home with the State title. The teams events were followed by individual competition and Mount Gambier & Districts Tennis Association players featured prominently. Ky Edwards won the 16 & Under Boys singles title in an age group where Mount Gambier players, not surprisingly given they won the team title, were front and centre in the final placings. Ethan Schultz finished runner-up with Patrick Mitchell also finishing inside the top four. Mitchell and Schultz then combined to finish runner-up in the 16 & Under Boys doubles, with Josh Dedonatis and Liam McEvoy combining for a top four finish. Liam Delaney also had a strong individual tournament, finishing runner-up in the 12 & Under Boys singles and in the top four in the 12 & Under Boys doubles. In the 12 & Under Girls singles, Shae Delaney brought home the title, with Jorja Mitchell and Jaymee-Lee Schultz combining to finishing runner-up in the 12 & Under Girls doubles. The championship winning 14 & Under girls team also saw some strong individual efforts, with Emily Edwards finishing runner up in the girls singles and Emily Nieuwerkerk, inside the top four. Jade Delaney enjoyed a third placing in the 16 & Under Girls doubles. Emily Edwards backed up her good performances in the juniors by combining with mother Sharon Edwards to finish runner-up in the Women’s Doubles, while in the men’s event, multiple State champion, Andrew Van Den Hurk, added a seventh title to his impressive resume with a win in the Men’s Singles. Ian Hopes also secured a top four finish. JORDAN THE PICK OF THE KEEPERS
DUST OFF YOUR OLD TENNIS RACQUET - FAST4 IS HERE
Former Naracoorte cricketer Jordan Doecke continues to make her mark on the national cricket landscape, walking away from the 2017 Australian Country Cricket Championships in Wollongong as the wicketkeeper of the tournament. The SA Outback women finished third with four wins and two losses but certainly scooped the pool with the individual awards. Doecke also made some contributions with the bat, with a top score of 27 and a total of 99 from eight matches, generally coming in late when quick runs were the order of the day. Her keeping exploits included an astonishing seven stumpings.
Mount Gambier & District Tennis Association is joining the sporting revolution that sees all mainstream sports promoting short forms of their traditional games in a bid to attract new players and spectators. The local association is starting a Fast4 Doubles competition, which will run from January 17, that will see play from 6-9pm on a “rock up o the night” basis. Basically the number of sets played will be determined by how many players register each night, with players having the opportunity to play with a variety of doubles partners. Olympic Park will host the social competition which follows the Fast4 tennis rules, including all games are first to four points with no advantage; sets are first to four games with a tiebreaker and lets are playable. Cost is $5 per player, with players asked to register by 5.45pm each Tuesday night. All standards will be catered for, although it is preferred players at least know how to play the normal format of tennis, and players do not need to be a member of a club to play. The bar will be open for those looking to quench their thirst.
ALYSSA DOMINATES STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Former South East footballer Sarah Allan has made a promising start to her AFL career, shining in the Adelaide Crows pre-season trial game against Fremantle in Darwin at the weekend. The talented teenager was named second best in the 22 point loss. The trial game was part of a three day camp in the Top End and Friday was the second time the whole group had been together. The Crows first game in the inaugural AFL Women’s Competition is on February 4, against Greater Western Sydney, at Thebarton Oval.

Alyssa Humphries continues to keep her name at the forefront of Victorian cricket administrators, ending the recent 2017 Cricket Victoria Under 16 Female State Championships with an average of 96.5. The Casterton teenager (pictured with Australian skipper Steve Smith) was dismissed only twice in five innings and that included three unbeaten fifties, with a highest score of 53 not out. She started the championships, representing Country West (Western Waves), with a bang – scoring that highest score, as well as taking 2/7 from two overs. Alyssa’s efforts with the bat saw her ranked fourth in her age group in terms of runs scored and third in championship averages.
LOCAL SPORT FINAL WRAP UP OF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS This time last year, Matthew McInerney, Josh Fidler, Ben Parish, Matt Dyer, Nick Clayfield and Adam Somerfield were celebrating emerging from the South East hosted 2016 Australian Country Cricket Championship as the men’s champions. To have six players with ties to the region hosting the 2016 event made the success even more special. McInerney, Fidler, Parish and Dyer were part of the 2017 championship defence, as was a new face to the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association – Alex Garlick – while East stalwart Dion Stratford secured the keeping gloves for the 2017 campaign. Kieran Ashby was also part of the SA team, but a hamstring injury in the opening match, where he made 45, put paid to his championship and he returned home. Western Waves player Ben Boyd, who was part of the Victorian side, excelled in 2016 and was again a standout in 2017 earning selection in the Australian Country XI. Boyd finished the championships, which saw T20 and One Day clashes in the format, with 18 wickets at an average of 15.4 and a strike rate of 22. His best figures were 3/21 against the East Asia Pacific, also claiming three wicket hauls in four other matches. The SA team had to settle for third with three wins and two losses at the Wollongong event with the
South East boys certainly having their time to shine. Garlick made his impact with the ball, taking 10 wickets with the best figures of 4/13. Stratford enjoyed a consistent tournament with knocks of 32 (twice) and making double figures in five other innings. With the gloves he snared 10 catches and completed two stumpings. Fidler finished with five wickets, Parish had a top score of 34 and McInerney, who was elevated from emergency status before the championships, started the tournament with a bang with a solid 48.

REVVING INTO ACTION AT AUTOFEST For almost four decades, petrol heads and lovers of cars and all things motor sport have converged on the Mount Gambier Showgrounds in January and this year will be no exception with the Autofest roadshow rolling into town from January 20 to 22. It is the 39th time Mount Gambeir has hosted the popular event with the action kicking off Friday night from 5.30-9.30pm, with Saturday and Sunday’s program starting at 9am on both days. eaturing everything from cars to trucks to bikes, Autofest is basically a smorgasbord of anything on wheels with organisers priding themselves on running a family friendly event. The Autofest Street Cruise and Display returns in 2017, as entrants who off their beloved machines between 4.30 and 5.30pm on January 21, leaving the showgrounds before heading along Pick Avenue, onto Sturt Street before heading along Bay Road and then stopping at Railway Terrace for the free display. The convoy will then head back to the showgrounds via the same route around 5.30pm as the burnout action gets underway on Saturday night. The hugely popular burnout competition will run until around 9pm before the off track action kicks into gear with the official After Party at the South Aussie Hotel. Entries are now open and more event information is available at www.autofest.com.au
DUST SET TO FLY AT BORDERLINE’S PREMIER EVENT This Thursday the Borderline Speedway springs to life with its premier annual event - the King’s Challenge. Attracting drivers from the USA and across Australia, the race always boasts a strong local flavour with former champion Steve Lines; Glen Sutherland; Rory Button and Ashley Scott all likely starters at their home track’s biggest event. Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings and his hard working committee have barely had time to draw breath since hosting the 2017 National Junior Sedan Titles but the King’s Challenge, with around 45 starters, including five Americans, has seen the club working overtime to make sure the track is in as good condition as it was for the recent national event. It is the 23rd running of the event, with gates open at 4pm and racing fm 6pm. The King’s Challenge is sponsored by Gambier Earth Movers, Stuckey Electrical, OG Roberts and Shelton Butchers.
