COVER - ENERGY SOLUTIONS FROM EXPERIENCED LOCAL OPERATOR Phase Electrical & Energy Solutions might be new to the South East Electrical scene but with a combined 30 years experience; they are as experienced as the best in the industry. As two local families Ben and Kerry Judd and Andrew and Cristy Crouch, who were born and bred in the South East, have chosen to live and raise their families here. After thinking about owing their own businesses the boys decided to bite the bullet and join forces starting Phase Electrical & Energy Solutions in February 2016. What services do you offer? We are passionate about supplying and servicing the local area, proudly offering good old fashioned service and 100% honesty and integrity. As electrical contractors we offer services for all domestic, commercial and industrial electrical purposes. Our goal is to provide cost and energy savings to the South East and Western Victoria. We are achieving this by focusing on Solar and Battery Systems. We offer full solar design and installation tailor made to specific energy requirements. Most

excitingly we are accredited for design and installation of battery storage systems, potentially taking you off the electricity grid. What is the benefit of Solar? Beyond the obvious advantage of generating your own electricity, solar power has many benefits: • Solar power works when you do - use the free electricity generated during day-time work hours (e.g. 9am - 5pm). • Solar power works when businesses typically pay the most for electricity during the day • Possible depreciation and company tax benefits. • Electricity that is clean, renewable and sustainable. • Silent operation. • No moving parts and little ongoing maintenance. We’ve heard about solar, but what is Battery Storage & how does it work? Batteries power all sorts of devices – power tools, notebook computers, tablets, smart phones and electric cars. It is now even possible with the help of Phase Electrical & Energy Solutions to provide this technology to power homes and businesses. Battery Storage allows you to store the excess solar power generated during the day into a battery so it can be used at night. Producing your own energy during the day and storing enough power in your own battery systems will off-set your night time usage without having to take much if anything from the grid.
It certainly is a new and exciting time in the world of battery storage. The hope of being 100% off the grid is not a distant dream anymore. We are proud to be the local Authorised Reseller and Certified Installer for the Tesla Powerwall. We also endorse Australian innovative companies such as Redback and Selectronics. How do you know what system will work for me? One of the best ways to determine what system will work for you is to have Phase Electrical & Energy Solutions come and monitor the power usage to your property to determine a system to suit. This helps give us an insight into your energy consumption. Allowing us to show you options not only through installing Solar or batteries but other means of reducing energy usage as well, thus providing even more cost savings. What happens if I already have solar? It is possible to add a battery storage system to any existing solar system. However, depending on what type of solar system or inverter you have, contract you’re in, or other variables determines whether a storage solution is right for you. Our goal is to provide our customers with friendly, expert service and detailed information so they can make an informed decision on their investment.

Is any maintenance required with Solar panels? To maximise the efficiency of your solar system, it is recommended that the panels are cleaned on an annual basis by a professional like Phase Electrical & Energy Solutions. It is necessary to seek a professional not only to clean the panels but to ensure that the system is operating correctly, the system performance is maintained, and the system is safe for everyone in the premises. Why choose Phase Electrical & Energy Solutions? We continue to grow our expertise by attending conferences and direct product training. We are also members of Master Electricians, whose membership ensure we stay current on all latest regulations and industry standards. LOCAL OLYMPIAN HOPING TO BE PART OF 2017 TRIATHLON The Naracoorte Toyota 2017 Kingston SE Triathlon. is shaping up to be bigger and better with the possibility Olympian and former Naracoorte local Jess Trengove will make an appearance. Currently training for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, the accomplished distance runner is looking forward to taking part in more local events over the coming years. “I love competing on home soil, but unfortunately due to injury I only raced once in SA and only four times in total this year,” she said. Jess is hoping to get some more interclub competitions, fun runs, Australian marathon races and triathlon running legs under the belt before heading to the Gold Coast. The Australian Olympian last competed in the Kingston SE Triathlon, which doubles as the seventh leg of the Triathlon SA State Series, in
1999. “One year I just did the running leg in the team event, and then the other year I did the COME ‘N’ TRI event,”
said Jess. As part of the 14 and under division, Jess won the COME ‘N’ TRI event in 2002 with a time of 33:23. An ambassador for the event, Jess says it is important for competitors to prepare for such an event with short term goals. “I prepare by setting short term training goals and doing what I can to get the most out of my training through balanced nutrition, recovery techniques, being proactive with injury management and getting adequate sleep,” she said. “I back off my training in the days leading up to the event to freshen up and eat a high carbohydrate meal the night before.” Jess adds it is also worth practising your race day nutrition strategy while training. Jess encourages competitors to seek out a coach or someone with triathlon experience to help get them prepared for such an event. “Training for the three disciplines can be quite time consuming but also very satisfying,” she said. “It is important to be organised and patient with training results in the early stages, making training social can be fun as well as motivating.” Local Kingston and Robe personal trainer Tegan Allwright is taking part in the International Cycles Olympic Course as part of an all-female team. Training has already started for the event, with many of her clients looking to take part in the 2017 event. “My advice for those interested would be to pick your course and then work your way up to each stage’s distance,” she said. “Then you can start combining them,
according to your chosen event and then finally work on your time. You need to believe in yourself and be smart with your training and diet.” With plenty of motivation behind her Tegan says taking part in the Kingston Triathlon is a great test to your endurance. “It is such an enduring event and watching many of the professionals being put through their paces is very inspiring,” she said. “It is wonderful that we have such an event, we are so lucky to have this in our region.” Currently Tegan is doing a free bike ride from the Kingston Fitness Hub on Friday mornings at 6am for those interested in training for the bike leg of the event. “I would definitely be
open to scheduled trainings for those competing,” said Tegan. “I competed for the first time in 2016 and would highly recommend anyone to go out and give it a go.” The International Cycles Olympic Course sees competitors take part in a 1500m swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run. This can be done individually or as part of a team. Many first-time competitors will have a go at theKevin Wright Plumbing COME ‘N’ TRI, which includes a 200m swim, a 7.3km bike ride and a 2km run. The other competitive course for the day is the Crown Inn Short Course, which includes a 500m swim, a 13.3km bike ride and a 3.6km run. More details of the non-competitive courses and Saturday night’s ‘Sunset Jazz’ event at the Lions Park with the Royal Australian Navy Band will be availanble in the New Year. The Royal Australian Navy Band will also be playing alongside the race track which is a new and exciting initiative put together by the triathlon committee for 2017. Regular updates are available through the Naracoorte Toyota 2017 Kingston Triathlon Facebook Page. SIBLINGS SIDE BY SIDE IN FIRST MUSICAL THEATRE PRODUCTION Living the dream – that’s the assessment of Meagan Pfeiler – and her younger brother Bronson concurs. The talented, former Mount Gambier based siblings are in the fledgling stages of their performing arts careers and are working side by side in Cabaret Cathedral – The Rhythm of Life, a Jason Coleman production, tapping into a love of both performers – musical theatre. The Rhythm of Life is a cabaret show which talks about Jason’s life and his experience with all the religions in the world. Cabaret Cathedral is a world first custom engineered, purpose built and fully transportable theatre space constructed from repurposed shipping containers and the Pfeiler duo and the rest of the cast are performing their pop-up production of The Rhythm of Life in Rosebud from December 8-January 29. Both Meagan and Bronson play a raft of roles in the production including featured characters. In fact, Bronson plays a younger version of Jason Coleman. “I also feature in a beautiful aerial duo with the very talented Rachel Hunt,” Bronson said. Meagan not only works on stage but as part of the production team, as well. “A lot happens on stage, but there is so much that happens off stage that most people don’t see,” she said. “Productions like these would not go on if it weren’t for the team behind the scenes - it’s a very creative process.” For Meagan, having a “real” job in the industry right on the cusp of graduation former studies at Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance, in
Photo courtesy of Belinda Stodder Melbourne, is extremely validating. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet that full time is over, because I’m still doing what I love,” she said. “I am very fortunate to be able to come out of full time and go straight into a show.” Bronson will be continuing his studies in 2017 but has embraced the chance to work professionally. “Nothing beats the feeling of being able to perform in front of a crowd six nights a week,” he said. For Meagan, the Ministry of Dance experience has been transformative. Since moving to Melbourne to study at Ministry she has spent every week day from 9:30-4:30 training. Each morning started with a ‘drills’ class, which is 90 minutes of high intensity training, including cardio, TABATA, strength & conditioning, and technical jazz/ballet exercises and progressions. The rest of the day would
follow with classes covering a range of different dance styles, as well as acting and singing classes for musical theatre. I would spend most nights after my training, as well as Saturdays, teaching in the junior school dance department. “Ministry was and still is my home away from home,” Meagan said. “I have had the opportunity to perform in four separate shows for Ministry, two musical theatre showcases and two end of year showcases, where I have been able to monitor my progression and see how far I have come over these two years. This course has been amazing. I have loved every moment of it. The teachers are world class and the most beautiful people you could ever meet, and the friendships I have made with other students there will stay with me forever. I’m a little sad that it is over, but

there’s so much more to come for me now.” Teaching will see her continue her association with Ministry of Dance in 2017 and aside from that, it is a case of wait and see, after the conclusion of The Rhythm of Life. “Hopefully, in the long run, I can be on stage again and again performing in many more amazing shows,” Meagan said. “I am living the dream.” As is brother, Bronson, who has also had a jam packed first year at Ministry. “I’ve been able to explore and discipline all areas of performance from musical theatre through to commercial and even some aerial training,” Bronson said. From this training, it has given me more confidence to go out and promote myself and my choreography, which is why I entered and managed to receive Australian Champion for Grounded Battle of the Arts Next Gen Division with my contemporary piece. Thanks to ministry, this year I’ve also been able to be a part of various commercial gigs which has lead me to performances at the Rod Laver Arena and Crown Casino. However, The Rhythm Of Life is my first musical theatre show which is what my true passion is.” And while some people find the uncertainty of the entertainment industry unsettling, Bronson is not one of them. “The beauty of this industry is that you really never know what the future holds,” he said. “I still have a second year of full time ahead so I will be spending next year on focusing and improving my performance skills and take any opportunities that come my way.”
NEW WELCOME MAT AT CARPENTER ROCKS
An opening celebration earlier tihs month at Carpenter Rocks revealed new community gates, developed to welcome tourist and visitors into the Carpenters Rocks area and surrounds. The Carpenter Rocks Progress Association, in partnership with the District Council of Grant, commissioned two new gates opening up onto the community recreational space which houses a well-appointed community complex, gold coin donation self-contained camping space, toilets, a playground, BBQs and tennis courts. President of the Carpenters Rocks Progress Association Terryl Allen was thrilled with the end result, which was a culmination of many hours of hard work. “I wish to thank the many people who contributed to this project, including members of the Progress Association, the District Council of Grant, Ben Merchant, from M.G. Plasterers, and Geoff Jame,s from Gambier Earth Movers,” she said. “This is a positive step forward for Carpenters Rocks and we welcome people to come and visit and spend time in and around our community.” The new gates pay homage to the Admella, which was sailing from Adelaide to Melbourne, when it struck Carpenters Reef in 1859 and sunk, claiming 89 lives, and making it one of the worst maritime disasters in Australia’s history. District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage, and his wife Lynnette Sage, had the honour of revealing the gates to the community, before everyone finished off the evening with Christmas celebrations in the community complex. “The gates are a credit to the Progress Association and their efforts to bring more economic and social activity into the area.,” Mayor Sage said. “The quality and workmanship is outstanding.” For more information about the Admella Discovery Trail, visit www.admella.org.au and for further information about the Carpenters Rocks Township visit council’s website www.dcgrant. sa.gov.au

Red Cross volunteers have been improving the well being of thousands of clients and their family members for more than 80 years in the South East. Ten year service recipients were, volunteers Dave and Margie Thomas, from Robe, and Gavin Sparrow, of Mount Gambier, who are part of the Community Passenger Network, which takes clients to medical appointments and social outings across the South East of South Australia, the South West of Victoria and as far afield as Adelaide. This Friday will be the first ever RotaryTwilight Market. An initiative of the regular stallholders, the market is also open to anyone who wants to put up a trestle to offer their wares to passing customers. Garage sales, craftworks, home-grown plants and vegetables will all be represented and the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier has plenty of room for more - just turn up for an outdoor stall. As a Christmas bonus, twilight stalls are encouraged to re-open their stands on Saturday morning, at no extra charge. Kids are catered for with pony rides, jumping castle, glitter tattoos, face painting and hands-on arty crafty action. The Twilight Market will be open from 5 to 8pm this Friday for truly last-minute festive shoppers. The Rotary Market is behind Harvey Norman, off Kennedy Road.
COLLECTED STUPIDITY - THE CHRISTMAS RULES... By ROBBIE TANSEL Well as you read this, you are probably in that last mad rush leading up to Christmas. I don’t know about you, but it’s probably my least favourite part of the year. There’s not much you can do though as this whole Christmas thing seems to be locked into the calendar pretty consistently each year. It doesn’t look to me like people are going to get sick of it and cancel it in the near future. With that in mind I think it’s important to have some rules so the festive season can be survived with as little discomfort as possible.
Rule number one: it’s not all about you. Some people seem to think that because they’re tired, busy, running out of time, a moron, everyone needs to accommodate their whims. The rest of the world needs to clear a path for them through the supermarket. The rest of the world needs to let them push their way to the front of the line rudely. Everyone else in the world has to be perfect or they will receive a justified torrent of abuse. We’re all tired. We’re all busy. Get over it, and pull your head in. We’ll all try to get through this together. Rule number two: you do need to see your family. Not only do you need to see your family, you need to try really hard to put up with their crap. I know that’s a big sacrifice. It won’t hurt you. You might not realise it, but

it will probably brighten up the day of someone that you are spending the day with. Rule number three: even if someone annoys you on Christmas Day, don’t hit them. Violence is never okay, but if you cause that sort of disruption on Christmas Day you’re ruining the day of a police officer or an ambo who’d rather enjoy a nice day with their family than come and sort your stupidity out. Remember rule number one. It’s not all about you. Rule number four: you shouldn’t hit anyone but every now and then they need a darn good shake. “What were you thinking Grandpa? I haven’t worn Spiderman underwear since I was four you silly old bugger!” Rule number five: go easy on the booze. There’s nothing wrong with a social drink or two on Christmas Day. But it’s not about getting blotto and doing dumb stuff. You might think it’s the best way to try to get through spending time with your family but it’s probably going to just make things worse. If you’re drinking they’ll probably drink. Everyone will be more obnoxious than they usually are and less able to make good decisions. That’s not what the day is about, and again it’s likely to end up with you inconveniencing emergency services. Rule number six: eat what you want. Overindulge. Go crazy. It’s one of the few days a year when you shouldn’t be worrying about if it will make you fat or not. Eat so much you feel sick. Do you
want seconds? Do you ever! Then lay down somewhere. Rule number seven: money pudding! If you are having pudding – and if you’re not, why not? – then there really should be money wrapped in alfoil under the pudding. Don’t ask why. Just do it. Five cent pieces are fine. Rule number eight: if you’re struggling for ideas for your staff Kris Kringle/Secret Santa present, get down to Collins Booksellers and buy a copy of Robbie Tansel’s fantastic debut book, Village Idiot of the Year. They’ll love you for it. Let’s be honest; it’s the perfect Christmas present for anyone. To you it’s eighteen dollars. To me it’s one less book sitting in my bedroom that Donna will be nagging me about. It’s almost like giving to a charity. I went down to Collins on the weekend for the first time since its reopening and they have got a great range of books. Including Robbie Tansel’s book Village Idiot of the Year. Did I already say that?
Rule number nine: no matter what someone gives you, act like it’s the best thing you’ve ever received, or something you really need. Someone thought enough of you that they went to the shops, searched around, and spent their money on you. Or Santa and the elves made it obviously. Except if your silly old twit of a grandfather buys you superhero underwear that would only fit you if you were still seven years old. Then grab him by the shoulders and shake him till his false teeth fall out. Hopefully some of this might be a bit useful. Thanks to all of those who continue to read and email me (or send postcards). Enjoy a safe and blessed Christmas. Be nice to people and stay safe. Any presents can be emailed to me at robbietansel@gmail.com

DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS Forget this Christmas. Nakita Fensom already has her eyes on Christmas 2017. Not only is she praying for a white Christmas but she is going to be in Denmark, where Christmas is celebrated from December 1-24. The 15 year old Allendale East student has secured one of 12 Rotary Exchange places in this Rotary District, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West. And so on January 14, she flies out to head on her 12 month cultural and educational adventure, where she will stay with three host families, attend the same school and soak in as much as she can of the Danish experience. It has been a gruelling process, complete with a 20 page initial application, followed by a two day camp with all the applicants and current Rotary exchange students in this district, before an interview completed the vetting. Her exchange counsellor, Rotary’s Max Dalrymple, said it was important to send the right type of ambassadors on these exchanges, which is why the process is so stringent. “They are an ambassador for Australia, as well as an ambassador for Rotary,” he said. Fortunately for Natika, she ticked all the boxes. “I’ve always wanted to travel,” she said. “One of my friends did a six month exchange and she absolutely loved it. After
looking at all the options, I decided Rotary was the best.” The students get the opportunity to list the available countries in order of preference and Denmark was Natika’s second choice. “I didn’t really mind where I went. I had France first because I’ve always wanted to learn French and I’ve never had the chance to learn another language at school,” she said. “But I’m so excited to be going to Denmark. We have had two girls here from Denmark and the way they talk about their country so highly I was really keen to go there as well.” And while Natika is keen to learn Danish, and is already trying to pick up some basic skills, the added bonus of Denmark is they predominantly speak English. A two week language school on arrival in January, added to the work she is doing now, should see her get a strong foothold in the Danish language. Mr Dalrymple said most of the exchange students picked up the native language in the first six months away. “The real test of how you’re going is when you start dreaming in the foreign language,” he said. Natika is already in close contact with two of her three host families – the family she will be staying with after her two weeks with her counsellor attending language school and the family she
will be staying with before she returns home. She is already getting a taste of a Danish Christmas, with one of her host families sending two boxes of small gifts – one for every day from December 1-24, as well as the same for her sister. “That’s the Danish tradition – you get a small gift every day of the celebrations,” Natika said. “And every day, I have received an email from her host father about the significance of the gift for that day.” “It’s not just a short paragraph,” mother Emma Fensom said. “It is a detailed explanation, a real story to go with each one – it has been great.” To have already made significant contact with two of her host families makes Natika one of the lucky ones. “Some of the other students haven’t heard from any of their families so I realise how lucky I am,” Natika said. She will be based in and around Holstebro, in Denmark, with all three families living in a close proximity and is fortunate to be able to attend the same school for the full 12 months. “It is fairly casual from what I can tell,” Natika said. “I have been told some days I might have one lesson, or sometimes only two and you only have to be at school when you have a lesson. There is no uniform either and you call the teachers by their Christian names.” The 15 year old has lifestyle1.net | 31
certainly prepared well in terms of her own schooling in Australia, completing Year 10 this year, as well as Year 11 subjects, so that when she returns she should be able to seamlessly transition into Year 12. “There is a chance I will be able to get SACE points for some of what I do in Denmark but that’s something that can’t be sorted out until I get back,” she said. The longest Natika has ever been away from family was three weeks when she was nine, and even then, she saw her parents on the weekends of that period and she stayed with other family members. “I am really looking forward to it though,” she said. “It doesn’t worry me being away for so long.” Mr Dalrymple warns the homesickness normally hits at the six week mark. “But if they can get through that, they’re fine and they all say in the end, the 12 months goes so fast.” Natika’s mum has already realised that communication will be in her absent daughter’s hands. “If it was up to me I would call every day probably,” Emma said. “But from what we’ve been told it is best to let them call when they want and when they are free.” A blog will be used to keep everyone updated on Natika’s experience and it looks set to be jam packed. Aside from her
schooling, her host families are already investigating dance school options, a swimming school and badminton. “The students are encouraged to do as much as they,” mum Emma said. “They do say it is good to make friends, not just at school, but outside of school as well and that’s why I want to do all the other activities as well,” Natika said. Add to that, the anticipated travelling and Natika is set for a busy time away.
STATE CALL UP FOR NARACOORTE TEEN Year 8 Naracoorte High School student, Lara Brown is one of 13 players selected to represent South Australia in the Under 15 National Female Cricket
Championships, which will be held in Canberra in January next year. The initial process started in April this year, and Lara (pictured below) has been part of
an 18-player training squad since then, travelling to Adelaide every second day during the October school holidays, as well as making the trek every weekend since as training ahead of the final team selection ramped up. Lara represented South Australia earlier this year as part of the Under 13 team that competed in the National female Championshipss, in Brisbane. “It is an absolute privilege to be coached
by Manning McInerney and Angela Lee and to represent South Australia has been a dream come true for me,” said Lara. Mount Gambier’s Bella Stratford was also selected in the Under 15 team but had to withdraw due to a change in date for the 2017 championships, which clash with her State basketball committments at the Under 18 championships.
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE SHIRE
There are plenty of ways to join in the Christmas Eve festivities this year with multiple events occurring across the Glenelg Shire. With events taking place in Portland, Heywood and Casterton, there are many opportunities for residents to celebrate the Christmas cheer. In Portland, Christmas Eve on the Foreshore, will take place on Saturday from 5.30pm–9pm at the Youth Activity Space. The event will feature face painting, live entertainment, inflatable giant slide and chair-o-plane. Most importantly Santa will make a visit riding the red fire truck and will be available for photos with families in the photo booth. Glenelg Shire Council has taken on the management of this annual event from the Portland Young Professionals Network, with the community group stepping down from organising the event after many years of involvement. Heywood will hold Christmas on the Town Green on Friday from 5pm to 8pm in Edgar Street, Heywood. There will be a visit from Santa and free entertainment and children’s rides including a jumping castle, slide, merry-goround and zorb balls. Casterton Town Hall will host Christmas at the Town Hal’ on Saturday from 6.30pm onwards with Santa visiting early in the night. Casterton locals are also invited to attend celebrations at the Bottom Pub (Glenelg) which will feature live music. Both the Heywood and Casterton Christmas Eve events are community run and supported by grant funding from council. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank encouraged families to join in on the local celebrations in their town. “There is so much on offer this Christmas Eve right across the shire,” she said. “Make the most of the night and order some takeaway food to enjoy on the foreshore lawns, the town green or Town Hall and enjoy the celebrations with friends, family and of course, Santa.” Cr Rank also reminded families to stay safe and plan ahead this Christmas. “I cannot stress the importance of staying safe this silly season. So if you are drinking, appoint a designated driver or arrange for an alternate form of transport to and from your Christmas celebrations. We want to see everyone safe and merry in the New Year.”

Mayor Andrew Lee is appealing to the Mount Gambier community to remember those in need at this special time of year. The Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal provides much needed support for a range of less fortunate, vulnerable or isolated members of our community at Christmas. As a united local response to the needs of our community, the Appeal aims to raise $28,000 this year to support those in need. “We’re still a long way off our target, so every cent will count in the lead up to Christmas this year and I’d like to thank everyone who’s contributed to the Appeal to date” said Mayor Lee. Last year, the appeal directly assisted 591 families, including 776 adults, 186 teenagers and 545 children with Christmas hampers, vouchers or gifts. While donations from the local community have stayed reasonably consistent, sadly the number of those requiring assistance at Christmas has increased by almost 20% over the past five years. “This is a unique local appeal and 100% of the funds are sourced and distributed within our region” said the Mayor. “As good citizens and good neighbours it is our responsibility to ensure that everyone is provided for at this special time of the year. This appeal plays an important role in making this possible”. All donations to the appeal are distributed through the Christmas Cheer Program delivered locally by Uniting Care, ac.care, Lifeline SE, St Vincent de Paul and The Salvation Army. The Mayor is calling on local businesses, community groups, families and individuals to donate to the appeal. Donations can be made: • By credit card or direct debit at www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/ christmasappeal • In person at the City of Mount Gambier Customer Service Counter Civic Centre, 10 Watson Terrace; or • By sending a cheque marked Combined Christmas Appeals Committee to: Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal PO Box 56, Mount Gambier SA 5290

ATKINS CROWNED CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
South East Field & Game held its Banner/Mitre10 Champion of Champions sporting clay Shoot Off earlier this month at Burrungule Park. To qualify a shooter had to win one of the monthly Gambier Shooting Supplies High Gun awards. Reigning champion Gavin Dyson shot with Tim Widdison, former national champion Jeremy Kent, Ken Atkin and Lake Bonney`s Danny Bellinger, as they competed for this prestigious title. Neville Kent set some world class targets in what turned out to be a real test of skill and concentration with each shooter taking turns from the various positions. As the distance increased so did the pressure, as no one wanted to slip up and let another seize any advantage. After 20 targets Bellinger and Dyson dropped out and with Atkin, Kent and Widdison still tied it was necessary for a further shoot off to decide a winner. Widdison went first and missed a big springer target which will give him nightmares, Kent was next up and also missed a crucial long range target. A clearly nervous Atkin stepped into the shooting ring needing to hit all the targets to win, holding his nerve to win the 2016 SE Field & Game Champion of Champions. Above - Newly crowned 2016 South East Field & Game Champion of Champions gets ready to line up a shot.

MOTOR BORDERLINE SET TO SPRING TO LIFE AS LOCALS LOOK TO IMPRESS HERE & INTERSTATE It’s the 30th anniversary of the high octane World Series Sprintcars and the championship roadshow rolls into Mount Gambier on December 28, showcasing some of the best sprintcar racing in the world right on our doorstep. The Borderline Speedway has been part of the World Series Sprintcar season for as long as it has been in existence, with Steven Lines flying the local flag in the 2013-14 season when he emerged as the series champion – the first Borderline alumni to do so. Lines finished third in last season’s championship while in the 2016/17 season Lines has done more racing close to home in South Australia and Victoria and has only competed at selective rounds of the World Series Sprintcars, as has fellow in form local hope Glen Sutherland. Rory Button, with the help of a motor from club stalwart Bill Barrows, will also take to the track for the World Series Sprintcar event, while Ashley Scott will also fly the local flag at the popular event, with Jack Gartner also mixing it with the best in the printcar business. Both will be hoping to have an impact

on their home track on the 28th, though, in what is round seven of the championship, and part of the Speed Week section of the championship, where drivers compete on five nights from December 26 – January 1 for the title of Speed Week champion, a title Lines also won in his championship winnings season of 2013-14. Speed Week has been a feature of the World Series Sprintcars since 2003/04, with popular US driver Jason Johnson taking the Speed Week title three times, with inaugural champion Max Dumesny, Brooke Tatnell and James McFadden all claiming Speed Week honours twice each. Not surprisingly, those are the names that feature regularly on the championship podium as well with Tatnell having been crowned champion nine times and Dumesny seven times, with both having plenty of top three finishes to go with those victories. Johnson is committed to a more limited Australian schedule this season, competing in Speed Week, the Borderline’s feature event for the season, the King’s Challenge, adn the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic, at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway. Fresh from winning the world’s biggest race, the Knoxville Cup, worth $250,000, the World of Outlaws star is driving for the Western Australian based Diamond Bay Motorsport and will be making a quick trip back to the US during his Aussie racing commitments to compete at the Chilli Bowl Nationals.
Given the hot competition between the Aussie drivers and the US invaders that love competing in the World Series Sprintcars championship, the US has only produced one champion – Darryn Pitman in 2002/03. Victoria’s Jamie Veal is the defending champion and he is sitting second on the championships standings after some adjustments were made to the points table after round one and round four were both marred by bad weather, leading into Speed Week, which starts on December 26 at Adelaide Motorsport Park. It then moves to Murray Bridge (December 27); the Borderline (December 28); Avalon, Geelong (December 30) and Premier Speedway, Warrnambool, on New Year’s Day. Two time series champion McFadden is leading the 2016/17 series with a total of 1003 points, 19 clear of Veal. Evergreen Tatnell is in striking distance in third, while 2010/11 champion Robbie Farr sits fourth and Western Australian driver Daniel Harding rounds out the top five. There will be a Pit Party from 3-4pm, with gates opening at 4pm, time trials at 5.30pm and racing from 6pm at the December 28 Borderline Speedway round. There will also be Formula 500 Speed Week racing as part of the December 28 event, with locals Jordan Manser, Matthew Wise and Steph Munn in action. And while the World Series Sprintcars are a familiar sight at the Borderline Speedway, on January 6 &

7, there will be a first for the Glenburnie track – hosting the 2017 National Junior Sedan Title, the first time the Borderline has hosted the junior titles. There will be three locals on show – Sam Gartner, Brad Gartner and Ryan Harry – with Sam considered a genuine shot at the title win. The field, which was released last week, is 84 entries strong, comprising of 31 from Victoria, an amazing 19 from Western Australia, 17 from the home State of South Australia, 11 from Queensland, four from Tasmania and two drivers will represent the Northern Territory. Reigning national champion Todd Atkins heads the field, and will be joined by Tasmanian and Northern Territory champion, Ardie Jonic, of Queensland, along with Queensland champion, Casey Collins as current titleholders in the field. Proof that speedway is a family sport, the field also comprises 15 sets of siblings or cousins racing in the event.
There are other national titles on offer as the year comes to an end, with Mark Jennings, Anthony Beare and Steven Gartner heading to Kingaroy in Queensland, to contest the National Street Stock Title. Racing is from December 30 to January 1, 2017, Beare is a three time winner of the title and looms as a genuine chance at title number four, while Jennings is also a former national champion who enters the Kingaroy event in good form. The local hopes will need to beat out a field of 74 drivers, with half coming from the host State. Mount Gambier driver Jason Duell was set to contest the national title as well but doctor’s advice following a head knock has seen him withdraw.

FORD ESCAPE SUV TO JOIN AUSSIE SHOWROOMS The new Escape has joined Ford’s expanding SUV line-up to make families’ lives easier with a fresh face, five-star safety and lower starting MLP. When compared with the Ford Kuga it replaces, the Escape also offers improved fuel efficiency on its 2.0-litre Eco Boost model. The new Ford Escape will build on the success of Ford’s expanding SUV range. Ford has more than doubled its SUV offering to customers since 2012, led by the locally-developed Everest and supported by the EcoSport and will further expand its offering with the forthcoming SUV based on the global Edge. “The Escape will follow the formula set by the Ford Kuga as a family friendly, fuel-efficient and five-star safety rated SUV,” said Ford Australia President and CEO, Graeme Whickman. “We’ve responded to calls for a broader line-up, with the front-wheel drive Trend giving consumers an even more compelling SUV offering, and with sharpened MLPs across the range.”
Key changes for Escape over the Ford Kuga include: • Refreshed design inside and out for a distinctive look. • Improved specification including paddle-shifters on auto Escape, building on the fun-to-drive ethos. • Improved fuel economy for 2.0-litre models thanks to automatic start/stop as standard, reducing running costs. • New FWD 1.5-litre Escape Trend fills the gap in Ford’s line-up, providing a variant that almost one-third of customers in this segment choose. The new Escape features Ford’s latest design language for a bold and sporty look that is shared with fellow Ford SUVs, including the global Ford Edge. The meticulously crafted interior has seen an upgrade in tactile quality, fit and finish, and has been refined to offer a more ergonomic, stylish and comfortable experience for occupants. The steering wheel and airconditioning controls are even more intuitive, and feature fewer and more
distinguishable buttons and switches, making the Escape’s cabin features easier to recognise and navigate. New convenience features also make Escape even more user-friendly; an electronic parking brake is effortless to operate and frees room for improved storage in the centre console. The second-row stadium seating boasts family-friendly packaging, with rear tray tables on the Titanium, as well as ISOFIX anchorage-points and rear air-vents on all models. It also offers up to 1603 litres of convenient cargo space with the stadium seating folded. The latest Ford technologies and sophisticated body engineering help drivers see more clearly and enhance safety on the road for new Escape occupants and other road users. The new Ford Escape will make driving and parking simpler for customers. New Perpendicular Parking functionality enhances the semi-autonomous Active Park Assist technology.
Powerfully Efficient Spend time exploring, not standing at a pump. EcoBoost engine technology uses an advanced combination of direct injection and turbocharging designed to save you fuel, time and money, all without compromising style or performance.
Just say the word SYNC®3 is at your voice command.1. Make calls, play music, activate your SatNav and even some of your favourite apps. That’s just the start. It also includes an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen, USB port and Bluetooth2. connectivity.
Five Star Safety There’s nothing more precious than family. With a 5-Star ANCAP Safety Rating, 7 airbags and some of the most advanced safety features available, you can enjoy real peace of mind. 1.
