MAYURA TASTING ROOM WINS GOLD AT TOURISM AWARDS It’s official - The Tasting Room at Mayura Station has been awarded a gold medal at the 2016 South Australian Tourism Awards. Presented by the South Australian Tourism Industry Council, the awards publically recognise and celebrate excellence in the South Australian tourism industry. Winners of the competitive awards were recently announced during a gala dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Since its launch in 2010, The Tasting Room has evolved from an educational facility into a boutique restaurant offering a unique dining experience. The Tasting Room provides guests with an exclusive opportunity to enjoy award-winning 100% Full-blood Mayura Station Wagyu Beef on the very property where the cattle are bred, born and raised. It is the ultimate in paddock-to-plate dining. “The Tasting Room offers a unique and interactive experience showcasing many hard to find cuts of Wagyu, exclusive to the diners at Mayura,” said Mayura Station managing director Scott de Bruin.Guests

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS CHOCOLATE CAKE WITH GANACHE 95g (1/2 cup) prunes, pitted 80ml (1/3 cup) port 185ml (3/4 cup) water 250g unsalted butter, chopped 180g dark chocolate, chopped 100g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), chopped 315g (1 1/2 cups) caster sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 eggs 50g sour cream 225g (1 1/2 cups) plain flour 2 tablespoons cocoa

interested in an interactive experience can dine at the Chef’s Table, which delivers all the excitement and heat of the kitchen. A meal at The Tasting Room showcases some of the exceptional food and wine of the Limestone Coast, with luxury Mayura Wagyu accompanied by fresh local produce and matched with some of the best wines the region has to offer. “Here at Mayura Station we are passionate about providing the best possible experience to our customers,” said head chef Mark Wright. “We are

fortunate to live in an area that offers an abundance of produce and I am pleased to be able to use ingredients such as locally grown specialty herbs, fresh fruits, vegetables and edible flowers to highlight the wonderful flavours and textures of our full blood Wagyu.” As the winner of the ‘Tourism Restaurant and Catering Services’ award, The Tasting Room will now progress to the Australian Tourism Awards in February, to vie for the national title.

1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Sour cream ganache 200g dark chocolate 200g sour cream 3 teaspoons port

Method Preheat oven to 160C/140C fan forced. Grease base and side of a 22cm (base measurement) springform pan. Use base of pan to draw a circle on baking paper. Cut out and use to line base of pan. Line side with a strip of baking paper. Bring prunes, port and 60ml (1/4 cup) water to a simmer in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until softened. Cool for 15 minutes. Use a stick blender or food processor to process well until smooth. Meanwhile, place butter, dark chocolates, sugar, vanilla and remaining water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until melted and smooth. Transfer to a large bowl and set aside to cool for 15 minutes. Place eggs and sour cream in a small bowl and whisk until combined. Use a balloon whisk to stir prune mixture and egg mixture into the chocolate mixture until well combined and glossy. Sift in remaining dry ingredients. Mix until combined. Pour into pan. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until a skewer comes out with moist crumbs clinging. Cool in pan for 2 hours. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Melt chocolate and cream in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Remove from heat. Slowly stir in port. Set aside, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour 30 minutes, until thick. Spread over cake.

LEADING THE WAY IN CRICKET DEVELOPMENT LOOK WHO’S IN TOWN Ryan Hosking couldn’t be happier. Put in charge of developing female cricketers in this region, the fledgling coach, who also works with the Chappell-Whitty Academy and in schools as a development officer, was looking to set up a local female competition and the response in the opening week, given week two, was washed out, was impressive and encouraging. There were 26 players in the first week and hopes are high that will rise, thanks to word of mouth. The good news is, girls can attend match day, which is Sundays from 11am at Blue Lake Sports Park, and can be registered on the day. The girls on show range from State representative Tia Pelkonen, a group of Kongorong girls, who play in the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association junior competitions, to first timers, many from other sports, just looking to give it a go. “When we started we were hoping for enough to play an eight-a-side match so we have already surpassed that almost have enough for four teams,” Hosking said. “It looks like it is going to go even better than we imagined. We have hockey players, netballers, basketballers, soccer players and tennis players all out here giving it a go.” Hosking is being assisted by coaches Nick Seager, Jake Blackwell and Rob Ellis as they look to develop

the girls skills during play. “That’s where Tia (Pelkonen) is so good,” Hosking said. “She is out on the field, playing with these girls and has so much experience to pass on to them. She is also a great example that there is a pathway you can follow and get the chance to represent your State.” Above - Cricket SA developemnt officer Ryan Hosking is making great strides with development of female cricketers in this region.

Father Christmas made a triumphant return to Mount Gambier at the weekend as the star attraction of the 2016 Mount Gambier Christmas Parade. The man from the North Pole was at the rear of the 52 float parade field - a few less entries than rcent years, but organisers were more than happy with the standard (see winners below). The weather could not have been better as Commercial Street was lined with families enjoying the floats and bands, who again impressed with their novelty costumes - which saw a new category created for 2016 honouring the best dressed band. There were plenty of old favourites as well as new entries in the 2016 parade with the Youth Advisory Committee again walking the length of the parade collecting donations for the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. The Party in the Park was also a huge success as a raft of children’s entertainment kept the parade crowd in the city centre at the Cave Garden. The 10 award winners from the 2016 Mount Gambier Christmas Parade were announced on Sunday with the judges again impressed by the standard of floats and bands that enter the festive event. Right (top) - Father Christmas waves to the crowd. Right (bottom) - The Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club proved a popular float in the 2016 parade.

UNIQUE GARDEN OPENS ITS DOOR

Timandra by the Sea will be open as a fundraiser for Portland District Health (PDH) on November 27. Timandra by the Sea is a garden like no other. Colour is minimised; instead foliage textures are used to make impact and using quirky ideas for sculpture can be found throughout the garden. The plants are all really healthy, adding to the overall green effect as you wander through the different parts of the garden. Covering one acre this delightful, award winning, Ecotourism certified sustainable garden is a must visit for anyone interested in gardens and in natural spaces. It is a plant lover’s paradise, while also being a haven for birds, koalas, lizards and frogs. The agrden is at 82 Windham Street [Princes Hwy through town] Narrawong, opposite the CFA. Garden entry will be priced at $5 per adult [normally $10 per adult] with children under 16 free. Gate takings to PDH.

Wattle Range COUNCIL

NEW MARINE PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Bayview College students will discover what’s living under the water in Nun’s Beach with a new program to be introduced in 2017. The new activity has been inspired by humanities and physical education teacher Leanne Outtram’s experiences in an Earth Watch Teach Live program. Ms Outtram has recently returned from an expedition to study the health of sea grass and dugong populations in Moreton Bay in Queensland. She was one of six teachers chosen for the program which involved snorkel dives to collect and later analyse different species of seagrass. They located seven varieties which were found to be healthy.

“There is seagrass in places you wouldn’t expect in dirty water but in pristine water sometimes not so much,” Ms Outtram said. One group saw 35 dugongs in one day. Ms Outtram’s group saw only two dugongs but encountered several turtles and dolphins. One of the activities involved placing Go Pro cameras 1.9 metres under the water with bait lures nearby to film what feeds on the bait to get a picture of life in the bay. Ms Outtram plans to repeat that activity with Year 11 students next year with Go Pros in four different sites at Nun’s Beach as part of a coastal studies unit. “We’ll get to see how active and alive Nun’s Beach is,” she said. “The concept of the Earth Watch program is to do field work and bring it back to our schools and this should be a fascinating activity for students.” Ms Outtram also completed a oneweek intensive teaching program in Cambodia during the September school holidays. Teachers from across Australia worked with children aged 11-17 for five days from the small commune of Rukhkiri to teach English, presentation skills, how to run a meeting and some geography and mathematics. They also donated 28 tablet computers to the students. “They were both amazing experiences,” Ms Outtram said. “I came back changed.” She added that the Cambodian experience had made her appreciate the work of World Vision. “Donations really help,” she said. “It makes a huge difference and they wouldn’t be able to do these programs without our donations.” Left - Leanne Outtram on her Moreton Bay adventure that has inspired a new activity for Bayview College students.

Advertorial • Dartmoor Show

THE TRADITION CONTINUES The Dartmoor Show is on again with all the action set down for December 3. Admission is only $5 for adults, with students under 16

free. The show boasts a jam packed equestrian show, including breeds, harness, hack and show jumping. The show always has an extensive flower section with a range of categories including roses, cut flowers, natives, pot plants and arrangements. The sporting clay shoot is always a popular event with plenty of local entrants vying for the titles on offer. This year’s pet parade will give entrants a chance to show off that special member of the family. The Dartmoor Show is an enjoyable and affordable day, offering homestyle food and a lot of fun. As usual, the show will be at the Mumbannar Reserve with further details available from Wendy Dowling on 0417 281 391 or dowlingins@bigpond.com Left (from top) - The equestrian events & the pet parade are two of the most popular events at the show. ROADS CAMPAIGN IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT Municipalities from across Australia have received a first-hand lesson by the Glenelg Shire Council on how to run an effective roads campaign. Glenelg Shire councillor Karen Stephens, who has spearheaded the Green Triangle Freight Action Plan over the past decade, presented the Fix Our Key Freight Routes social media campaign at the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) National Local Roads and Transport Congress in Toowoomba earlier this month. More than 200 mayors and councillors from across Australia heard how the advocacy efforts had reached more than 200,000 people on social media, resulting in funding commitments from State and Federal Government to fix key arterial routes.Among the guests was Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester and Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development Anthony Albanese. Glenelg Shire Council CEO Greg Burgoyne said the local campaign had been a new strategy to engage with

government to attract funding. “Our shire has attracted national interest because of our effective and hard hitting campaigning which has illustrated the importance of regional collaboration in attracting government funding,” he said. “The Green Triangle Freight Action Plan, which has been developed over the past nine years, is a unique cross border collaboration between local and state governments, industry and business which provides detailed economic analysis, supporting a strong business case for roads investment. “Together with our community we campaigned tirelessly, particularly over the past 18 months as the road conditions deteriorated to breaking point, attracting the attention of both levels of government, resulting in a funding injection of $80 million – almost half of the investment required over the next 10 years to fix these key freight routes.” The council’s advocacy efforts have included the release of the Green Triangle Freight Action Plan Update, three social media video campaigns, DL flyers distributed

AIR PASSENGER SERVICE TRIAL IN HAMILTON Southern Grampians Shire Council is one-step closer to re-instating a regular passenger air service from Hamilton Airport but needs commitment from the community to make it a reality.A recent survey of local businesses and industry conducted by Council’s Economic Development and Tourism

Unit demonstrated strong support for the return of a regular air service, along with a growing database of prospective passengers. This survey feedback was presented to several airlines, and Airlines of Tasmania (also known as Par Avion) indicated that it is willing to conduct a six-month conditional trial.Managing

Cr Stephens said council received significant “positive feedback” on the campaign efforts from congress participants. “It has been a lot of hard work and long hours, but our efforts have resulted in positive outcomes for our community,” she said. “We were willing to go to whatever lengths it took to highlight the critical need for investment and the hard work has paid off with these recent funding announcements. Our lobbying efforts will continue over the coming weeks and months to ensure this investment is spent before the next wet season.”

Director of Par Avion, Shannon Wells, has been very open regarding the barriers to establishing a regular air service between Hamilton and Essendon Airport, so the trial would be conditional on the community helping to underpin the costs of establishing a viable route by prepurchasing tickets Par Avion is proposing to operate an eight-passenger aircraft, between Hamilton and Melbourne for three return services a week. For a sixmonth trial, this means around $300,000 in flights would need to be pre-paid to underwrite the service. Council CEO Michael Tudball Southern Grampians Shire is excited by the opportunity this trial presents for the region but reinforced that people will need to “vote with their seat” for any potential return of passenger air services. “There has been significant investment in the Hamilton Airport over the last 18 months from Council, and State and Federal Government,” he said. “We now have an excellent facility and we have worked hard over the last 12 months to attract new business. The Par Avion trial presents a fantastic opportunity for our region.” Ticket prices per-sector would be $149 one-way or $298 return. Any pre-paid tickets would be unrestricted. Normal ticketing is expected to be $149 one-way restricted and $199 one-way unrestricted. It is expected that the trial would be conducted on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday however these days will be confirmed with potential customers prior to the commencement of the service. Essendon Airport currently operates a mini-bus between Essendon Airport and Tullamarine Airport to connect passengers to domestic and international flights and negotiations are currently underway to extend that service to the Melbourne CBD.

ETERNAL OPTIMIST CLOCKS UP A DECADE OF FUNDRAISERS Karen Petersen lost her sister Diane Burley to cancer in 2000 and she has been committed to raising awareness and funds ever since. She started her campaign as part of the, now defunct, annual Cancer Council Country Door Knock, when coordinator George Slattery seconded her as a volunteer. She joined the local Cancer Council committee and when the door knock was terminated, Karen started what has become an annual tradition – her Girls Night In. In November this year, Karen hosted her 10th Girls Night In, topping the $10,000 fundraising mark along the way. Sitting at $8500 heading into the 2016 event, Karen set herself a target of $1500 – the highest amount she has ever raised at one of her events – but also as a stunning exclamation mark on a decade of fundraising with the nice round figure of $10,000. And Karen and

her loyal friends, who support the event year in, year out, easily achieved the goal with almost $2200 in the 2016 kitty. The start of the Girls Night In events was also sparked by one of Karen’s closest friends and an auntie both being diagnosed in 2007. “It started as a Friday night event but more people were able to attend on a Saturday afternoon so we changed it a few tears ago,” Karen said. “It’s just been my way of contributing.” As has Daffodil Day and a now annual afternoon tea fundraiser at the Blue Lake Golf Club in her role on the Cancer Council local committee. Karen is also a member of the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group. “Cancer is like a chain and we’ve all been touched by it,” she said. “We’ve all played sport with that person who got it, or worked with someone or a family member. People we meet in life are taken and

it’s just not fair.” Karen is so committed to the local fundraising efforts – to support people in this community and because she is eternally optimistic that a cure will be found. “So much of the money raised goes to research and I think there has to be a cure,” Karen said. “While there is a long way to go with some types of cancer, they say they are really close to a cure with breast cancer and I just hope I live to see that.” Karen’s almost legendary Girls Night In started with around 20 guests and now attracts around 50 – that has not just elevated the fundraising levels but also the fun factor. “It’s always been a case of the more the merrier,” Karen, who hosts the event at her home, said. “Every year there are some new faces and we always ask them to bring a friend as well.” Of course there are also the “lifers” – Jeanette Elliott, Josephine Patzel, Sara O’Connor and Bernadette Douglas – the girls that have been to all 10 shows. Five years ago, Karen also boosted the fundraising capabilities of the event by initiating an auction. “Everyone brings something they don’t want any more, it could be a race hat or a dress or a handbag, basically something girlie,” she said. “We auction everything off over the afternoon and it gets quite competitive. Some of the items have even been auctioned more than once and sometimes the original owner buys them back. It’s a lot of fun and people put aside things during the year in anticipation of bringing it to the Girls Night In.” There is also a

Pet of the week Lady is a two year old female calico tortoiseshell and has just mothered six kittens. She is a smooch who is now available for a new home. Lady would love to be snuggled in curled up in your lap or in her bed. She loves comfort and would make a great new family member. raffle and the generosity of her guests and the community at large always ensures it is a successful event. “Everyone helps with the food,” Karen said. And in 2016, support from Dominos Pizza, Linksview Bar & Bistro, Lima & Co., Collins Court Butchers and It’s A Celebration with food, decorations and raffle prizes showed again the generosity of the Mount Gambier community. “Our local community is so generous,” Karen said. “It blows me away what everyone is prepared to give and no one ever says no. I think we’re very lucky in the community that we live in.” So what started with a donation tin and a raffle has become so much more. “Everyone looks forward to it which is great,” Karen said. “I think it’s important to have it at my home as well. I have thought about moving it, but I think that’s part of the

charm and the fun.” Husband John and her parents are also integral cogs in the Girls Night In machine. “When you ask for help, people just help so I’m going to keep going until they find a cure.” Above - Josephine Patzel, who has attended all 10 of Karen’s Girls Night In events, and Karen Petersen, cut the anniversary cake. STEPPING THEIR WAY TO A LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION WINDFALL On the Great South West Walk

Step To Support organising committee

It’s official – the inaugural Step To Support Leukaemia Foundation fundraising hike was a huge success, raising $7500 for the cause and the Great South West Walk is already set to be an annual event with October 27-29 set down for 2017. “What really struck me was the atmosphere,” organiser Tash Attiwill said. “I didn’t have a preconceived idea of what it would be like but I was hoping we would create a sense of community and that’s what happened.” Step to Support saw around

70 walkers tackle the Great South West Walk from October 28-30, with four hikers tackling the three day event, 10 more committing for two days and the rest taking to the picturesque hiking trail for one of the three sections. “The feedback has been so positive which is why we were so quick to lock in a date for next year,” Tash said. “The evenings were great, everyone was chilled out and also really proud of themselves.” Families came to join their hiking relatives for the Friday or Saturday night meals with entertainment from Di Ind on Friday and Courtney Holmes on Saturday. “We wanted to raise awareness and the funds were a bonus,” Tash said. And minor tweaks are already afoot for the 2017 Step to Support, with the capacity to donate to the cause even if you can’t do any of the walk, as well as offering entrants the chance to seek sponsorship. “People actually surprised themselves and I think more people will do two or even three days next year,” Tash said. “They weren’t sure they’d enjoy camping, or weren’t sure they could walk that far but they could and can’t wait to be involved again.” The good news for the Leukaemia Foundation is, the event attracted a lot of new faces to the cause – people that hadn’t attended previous events. Aside from the entry fee from walkers, a raffle held on the hike, as well as some sponsor donations allowed the fundraising efforts to hit that $7500 mark. “We were also lucky that so much of the food and other supplies were donated,” Tash said. It was a challenging logistical event, organising 70 walkers over different

PORTLAND LIGHTS UP FOR CHRISTMAS

Shop local and support local business this week as Glenelg Shire Council officially launches the countdown to Christmas. The Portland CBD will be illuminated Thursday night as the lights are officially switched-on the Bentinck Street Christmas tree. Newly elected Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank will turn on the power at 8.30pm, illuminating the main Norfolk Pine, opposite the Gordon Hotel, in the midst of the popular Midnight Sale. There are about 30 businesses participating in the annual shopping sale, with retailers opening through to late offering discounts on a variety of items. As part of the festivities, Santa will be touring the streets aiding shoppers and handing out lollies to children with assistance from the local CFA brigade. As part of the celebrations Glenelg Shire Council is coordinating a Christmas window display competition. The winning business, judged by Cr Rank, will receive a return flight voucher for two people from Portland to Melbourne courtesy of Sharp Airlines.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DINNER TIME... By ROBBIE TANSEL Is there any more torturous experience that a person will go through in their lifetime than eating a meal with a four year old? Lucky me, I get to do it on a nightly basis. The process of eating dinner with the four year old normally starts shortly after taking the plate he ate his Nutella sandwich for lunch from to the sink. He will normally ask, “What’s for tea?” at about quarter past one. He will then ask, “Is it tea yet?” every five minutes from then until tea is served. That’s where the problem starts. If we tell him what’s for tea, for example “lasagne and vegetables” he will then add the phrase, “I don’t want to eat that!” to his five minutely routine. If we tell him there will be anything other than chips for tea, we’re going to hear some version of his displeasure throughout the afternoon. Nothing else is considered a suitable meal. The fun hasn’t really started until you arrive at the dinner table however. He will of course announce loudly that he doesn’t want to eat whatever it is that has been served up as soon as it arrives on the table. This is the point when the violent threats start happening from the child’s mother. “If you don’t eat your tea then there’s no dessert.” This gets an almost instant reaction. A piece of food will

be placed in the child’s mouth. I must add here that we may have the laziest child on the planet. Precious refuses to put the food on his fork himself. He will also ask if someone can then transfer the food to his mouth. If we’ve got the energy for a fight, we’ll insist that he put the food in his mouth himself. This will generally be achieved as long as one of us says, “3, 2, 1 blast off” first. You’d think that the battle was finished now, but you’d be wrong. As soon as the food hits his tongue, Shaquille will pull a face that makes it seem that you’ve actually put a live scorpion in his mouth. It will also generally be accompanied by dry retching. Now the food is in his mouth, he’ll remember that he actually enjoys eating it and has done so on dozens of occasions, and just get on with his meal, you may think. If you have or have had a toddler of your own, you know of course that this couldn’t be further from the truth. The piece of food, normally something in the potato family (roast, potato bake, jacket potato) is now going to chewed and chewed and chewed. It will be masticated far beyond the point

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW RFDS FUNDRASIER If you are a fan of the TV series Antiques Roadshow, the RFDS Mt Gambier Support Group is bringing its own show to Mount Gambier, with a valuer, Warren Joesl, from Melbourne, who is guaranteed to be as entertaining as the British hosts. Here is your chance to take a good look around your home and dust off those treasures you’ve been told are worth a fortune, and see if they are worth keeping or be consigned to the rubbish tip. On Sunday, November 27, the RFDS Support group is organising an “Antiques Expo & Valuation Day”. The event will be held at St Paul’s Hall, Penola Road, from 10am–4pm. A valuation fee of $5 will be charged per item, with a limit of 4 items per person. Bookings for a specific time can be made by ringing Marg or Bill on (08)8726 8139. Devonshire teas and a bbq will be available throughout the day and there will also be displays of old items and interesting knick-knacks.

AH XIAN: AXIOM of needing to be chewed any more. It won’t be swallowed though. It’s bad enough having it in his mouth, but going down his gullet would be a fate worse than death. While eating a single pea one night I counted him chewing it one hundred and sixty times. The meal will generally take around about an hour. In that time he will eat about six one centimetre pieces of potato and then demand a sandwich. Don’t judge us. The eating is only one part of the torture. There’s also the jiggling in the chair, the tapping of cutlery on crockery and expelling of gas out of the top and the bottom…that’s normally Donna though and she just blames Shaquille. If it was my choice I’d just give him chips every night and be done with it. I’m not that great a parent. If you’d like to tell me how I should just give him the meal and not give him anything else until it’s eaten, you can contact me at robbietansel@gmail.com

Council CEO Michael Tudball has welcomed yesterday’s announcement of a combined package from the State and Federal Government of $90 million in roads funding, but reinforced that further investment was needed to bring our roads up to standard. The funds form part of a $690 million rural and regional roads package, with the state and federal governments contributing half each. The arrangement includes $40 million to upgrade the Henty Highway between Hamilton and Portland and $40 million for the Princes Highway between Colac and the South Australian border. “Of course I’m very pleased by yesterday’s announcement” Mr Tudball said. “The three major highways to be funded are all critical for regional tourism and our agriculture/ export industries and this is the most significant investment in the regions’ road network that we have seen for some time. “I look forward to seeing the full details of the package, particularly of the works on the Henty Highway.” However Mr Tudball reinforced the need for continued commitment to South West roads from the State Government. “We really hope this funding is just the beginning. We know our roads are in a very poor condition, particularly after recent flooding events, and are among the worst in the State,” he said, “We have been and will continue to advocate for more funding for these major arterials. These roads, and our road users, need a much bigger commitment from the State Government.”

FAMILY VIOLENCE IN THE SPOTLIGHT Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group are proud to be hosting the LCFVAG free community breakfast at Frew Park, Mount Gambier this Friday in support of the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the White Ribbon Foundation’s campaign to stop violence against women. Now in its sixth year, the LCFVAG free community breakfast is a well-established event on Mount Gambier’s social calendar. The breakfast is one of many events taking place across Australia to raise awareness for White Ribbon Day. Breakfast patrons enjoy a free hot breakfast and barista coffee with people from all facets of the community. Many enlightening discussions about the effects of the violence against women and children have taken place over a free snag or some eggs and bacon. LCFVAG invites the community to show their support and to raise awareness about

men’s violence against women and the role communities play in creating positive change. It is important that we all speak up about these issues and as a community say we do not accept violence in the lives of anyone. The event is also generously sponsored by Woolworths, Metro Bakery and the Sunset Kitchen. Community members will also be able to take the White Ribbon Campaign Oath “I will stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women.” Chairperson Le-Anne Thomson said one in three Australian women had experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime. “This could be your mother, your sister, your daughter, your colleague or your friend so come along and support our goal to work towards the prevention of violence against women in your community and enjoy a freshly cooked hot breakfast,” she said. If you know a woman experiencing violence, speak up. Ask her if you can help. The Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service will support women in the Limestone Coast. They can be contacted on (08)8723 1385 or free call 1800 631 385.

North Gambier has continued its dominant start to the 2016/17 season with a 94 run win over reigning champions South Gambier. With last weekend’s weather seeing no play, this round was reduced to a one day fixture on Saturday and built on the back of a stylish, unbeaten 103 from Matt McInerney, North was never really troubled. McInerney became the second North batsman to carry his bat this season, joining Mitch Lewis, and his 161 second wicket partnership with Jake Schutz (43) ensured the Tigers set a challenging target for South. McInerney’s innings included six fours and one six, making it one of the more crafted centuries, relying very little on hard hitting but more on placement and good running. When Cameron Jorgenson removed Lewis before he scored, North was 1/2 but that was as good as it got. Fellow new recruit Dylan Clough was the only other wicket taker for South, taking 2/33 from his seven overs. Aside from a 41 fourth wicket partnership between Richard Crute and Clough, South was unable to build any significant partnerships. Scott Kenny was damaging early, reducing South to 2/11 after removing Daniel Loupos and Jacob Parham cheaply, while it was veteran Michael Silvy that did the damage through the middle. He broke the dangerous Crute-Clough partnership and finished with 4/27 from his eight overs. Nick McInerney cleaned up the tail to be the other multiple wicket taker with 2/2. Yahl had reason to celebrate after what has been a tough start to the season. The brown caps posted 5/147, thanks in no small part to a stunning 97 from evergreen David Pick. Batting at number five, Pick misjudged a second run from a shot he placed over the slips cordon and he was left a foot short of his ground and three shy of a ton. Pick’s impressive knock included four fours and eight sixes as he wound back to the clock. It was the usual suspects with the ball for Yahl with Josh Fidler (2/22) and Jordan Neis-Beer (2/28) doing the damage. Building partnerships proved problematic for Mil Lel in the chase, with a number of players getting a start but none able to go on with it in any significant way. Sam Douglas was the chief destroyer with the ball for Yahl, taking 4/38, while skipper Josh Reader, who was proud to see his side secure victory, picked up 2/27. In the highest scoring contest of the round, West Gambier took the points over Kongorong. West Gambier made 8/233 with wicket keeper batsman Jake Blackwell continuing his stellar start to the season with 87. He was well supported by Bowen Hosking (65), who is blossoming in his debut season in the top grade, and Jason McCrae (37). Kongorong gave the chase a red hot go, just falling short at 8/214. Skipper Ryan Hosking led West’s attack with 3/32, with Shane Dycer (2/28) and Bowen Hosking (2/22) chipping in. Despite an impressive 44 from Tom O’Connor at the top of the order, East was unable to build a challenging enough target for a talent filled Penola line-up. An unbeaten 46 from Ash Dumigan late in the innings ensured the East bowlers had something to defend, but Kieran Ashby (68) and

lifestyle1.net | 38

George Kidman (45) were solid as a rock in the chase. After a classy 31 from skipper Jase Batman, the experienced duo saw the Eagles home, both reamining unbeaten as Penola powered to a seven wicket win. There was some big batting in Crouch Shield as well, with Centrals top order bat Dewain Barrett clubbing 107 in his side’s victory over South Gambier. Barrett‘s hard hitting innings included 12 fours and four sixes and comes on the back of an unbeaten 106 the previous round. That innings saw him find the boundary 12 times and clear it five times. That round also saw Cox Bros player Steve Fisher, from, North Gambier securing an unbeaten 161. Fisher hit 18 fours and one six. BARBER SHIELD Penola v East Gambier East Gambier 1st innings 5/126 (A. MOTOR SUTHERLAND SALUTES AT BORDERLINE OPENER The Borderline Speedway officially opened its 2016/17 season on Saturday night and couldn’t have scripted a better night of racing with local Glen Sutherland taking out the feature race. Competing in the Eureka Garage & Sheds Sprintcar Series Round 4, Sutherland won heat two, finished sixth in heat four, finished second in the Pole Shootout and then come from that position on the grid to secure top place on the podium, ahead of David Murcott and Brett Milburn. Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said the local victory was the perfect start for the season. “It always attracts more interest in the speedway when locals are doing well,” he said. Crowd numbers were around the 1500 mark – a number organisers would like to be higher – but other than that, it was a night of racing that went off

DALLAS SECURES ANOTHER PODIUM FINISH

without a hitch. “The night was good,” Jennings said. “The weather was kind and the track was excellent for the first racing of the season. All classes had some good racing.” There were a couple of rollovers, as tends to happen in this high octane sport, but everyone emerged relatively unscathed. The World Series Sprintcars on December 28 is the next meeting at the Glenburnie track. Right - Glen Sutherland opened his account at the Borderline Speedway at the weekend with a solid victory in the feature race.

LINES PICKS UP WINNER’S CHEQUE It wasn’t officially confirmed until 3am Sunday morning, but Steve Lines has taken out the 2016 Australian Sprintcar Masters at Adelaide Motorsport Park. He finished the feature race in second place but a protest against winner Luke Dillon, which extended into the early hours of Sunday morning, saw Dillon relegated to third and Lines was not only crowned the winner but handed the $10,000 winner’s cheque.

More local success at the weekend, this time at the Western Speedway in Hamilton with Mark Jennings taking out the 25th running of the Street Stock Triple SSS.

Lines (pictured right) will still be competing as part of the World Series Sprintcar Championship but will not attend every round as he has in previous season and with round two also at the weekend he had to make a call and with winner’s cheque in hand, it seems like the right one. “The car is running pretty well and we are definitely around the mark,” Lines said. “We have to get a little bit better but it’s been a good start to the season.”

Furner motorcyclist Dallas Skeer is finishing the season as strongly as he started it, finishing second in the final round of the Victorian Road Race Championships and ending the four round championships in third. The final round of the championships was held in Broadford, Victoria, on November 12 & 13, after Dallas had enjoyed a month away from the bike. Racing in wet conditions, it was a tough weekend on the bike, although Dallas’ practice times showed good promise, hitting times close to his personal best during the Friday practice session. Racing on his 125cc, Dallas matched it with the Moto3 during Saturday’s qualifying, which was in the wet, before things dried up for the first race. Starting on the first row of the grid, Dallas incurred a 10 second penalty after a jump start, keeping up with the bigger bikes through the corners but a little off the power in the straights. “I got stuck behind traffic on the sixth laps with four laps to go and unfortunately couldn’t make up the lost time,” Dallas said in his post race facebook post. Sunday’s racing was wet from go to whoa, with Dallas finishing second in the first race and coming home strongly in the final race of the weekend to secure that second spot for round four and a podium finish in the championship. As always, Dallas is very aware of the importance of his support team in all the success he has enjoyed this season. “I would not be able to race if dad didn’t drive to every race meeting and work on the bike before every race,” he said. “Also a big thanks to my rider coach Terry Armstrong for helping me to understand the bike more and the conditions that I was riding in and also a huge thanks to all my sponsors for supporting me.”
