COVER - NEW OWNERS JOIN ONE STOP SHOP The Mount Trade Centre has been offering a one stop shop for all your electrical, plumbing and construction needs for the past four years and that is set to continue under the new leadership of Greg and Donna Godrik, who have secured ownership of de Bruin Construction and Friswell Electrical SA. Greg and Donna will now work side by side with original Mount Trade Centre partnering business Tye’s Plumbing, with owners David & Lousie Tye being a founding partner in setting up the Mount Trade Centre in 2013. During that time, David Tye and Greg have built a strong committed working relationship, working together on many projects within the region, from large commercial redevelopments through to small day to day home maintenance repairs, which required more than one trade. Greg has been general manager of de Bruin Construction and this new venture sees him bring those skills, which along with the great team of tradesmen and support staff, will see the Mount Trade Centre go from strength to strength. Godrik Construction and Friswell Electrical SA have a combined team of 19 employees and adding that to the 10 Tye’s employee base and the range of work that can be completed by Mount Trade Centre is almost endless. It boasts electrical experience in commercial, residential and industrial, as well as test and tagging, general preventative maintenance, switchboard checks, RCD and emergency lighting services, solar design and installation, CBUS accredited

RISK PAYS OFF AS EXHIBITION DRAWS RECORD CROWDS The Walkway Gallery’s current exhibition Ben Quilty: from the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia has smashed all attendance records since opening at the end of October. In just three days, the exhibition became the highest attended exhibition in the gallery’s short history with more than 2500 visitors recorded. On loan from the Art Gallery of South Australia, the exhibition features the collection Inhabit and the stunning 7 metre long 8 panel painting “Evening Shadows after Johnstone”. Inhabit has not left the collection since it was acquired by the gallery in 2011 and the two collections have never been exhibited together, making the Bordertown exhibition a national first. This show is the largest and first major exhibition undertaken
by the Walkway Gallery and marks a renewed commitment from the gallery to present work that reflects contemporary Australian culture. As visitor numbers continue to grow, Naomi Fallon, Director of the Walkway Gallery said the exhibition’s popularity has even surpassed her expectations. “This was always going to be a great opportunity for Limestone Coast residents to be immersed in and engage with contemporary artm” she said. “Even though the work is by Ben Quilty, who is highly recognisable and arguably one of our country’s leading contemporary artists, it presented a huge risk. I think all of our visitors, particularly locals’ sense that they’re taking part in something unique and slightly risky – we’re pushing forward
and breaking new ground. It’s so rare to see an internationally recognised artists work hanging in a regional gallery. People who are walking through the door have often never heard of Ben, and have certainly never seen anything like his distinctive style and the massive and impressive scale of Evening Shadows. But, despite that there is a definite buzz in town. This might be someone’s first foray into a contemporary art, and actually maybe even a gallery. It’s so important for people to know that they don’t have to like it, but you should be curious, you should be open and ask questions if you want. We have, for the first time in five years, people stepping through the door for the very first time. It’s exciting to see people travelling from
Melbourne, Adelaide, Robe, Penola, Horsham, Bendigo....to Bordertown specifically for this exhibition. I’ve never seen so many blokes in the gallery before. No other exhibition has had this impact before.” Ms Fallon said the gallery had worked hard to cater for the exhibition’s popularity. “We have extended the hours to accommodate those people who can’t get here during weekdays, by opening weekends, and we have also offered group and school tours to those that are interested,” she said. “We have another two weeks to go, and we are hoping to end on some big days. Who knows when we will see this work again?” Ben Quilty: from the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia is on show until Sunday, November 27. Opening hours are Monday to Friday
9am–5pm, Saturday 10am–4pm and Sunday 11am–4pm. Free admission. The Walkway Gallery is principally funded by Tatiara District Council and supported by Country Arts SA through the Creative Communities Program. Ben Quilty is currently exhibiting alongside 20 other contemporary artists in the Art Gallery of South Australia exhibition “Sappers and Shrapnel: Contemporary art and the art of the trenches”. which is open until January 29. PARTY IN THE PARK RETURNS The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West is again hosting the annual Party in the Park following the Mount Gambier Christmas Parade this Saturday at the Cave Garden. This will be the 19th year of the Party and over the years the club has had outstanding support from the Mount Gambier Council, many businesses and fellow service clubs. Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West event organiser Barrie Whennan said it was the club’s way of saying thank you to the community, for their generous support of Rotary and other service clubs during the year. The club provides free entertainment for children, including a jumping castle, face and craft painting, balloons and the opportunity to meet Father Christmas. With full catering on site, the proceeds from the Party In The Park enable the club to continue its contributions to the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

NEW FACES JOIN COUNCIL AS ANITA RANK EMERGES AS MAYOR
Two new faces have joined the Glenelg Shire Council chamber alongside five incumbent councillors for the new council term. Portland-based business people Chrissy Hawker and Alistair McDonald will join returning councillors Karen Stephens, Gilbert Wilson, Anita Rank, Robert Halliday and Geoff White. Cr White, 81, is returning for a seventh term and is believed to be the oldest and longest serving councillor in Victoria. Max Oberlander and John Northcott, both former Mayors, were unsuccessful candidates. Glenelg Shire Council CEO Greg Burgoyne congratulated the successful new chamber and praised the efforts of the departing councillors. “I look forward to working with this new council chamber as we focus on continuing the great work of growing our local economy base and making
the Glenelg Shire a desirable location to work, invest and visit,” he said. “These elected councillors come from a variety of backgrounds and fields and will bring a wealth of experience to the chamber with fresh ideas and objectives for our community. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of Max Oberlander and John Northcott who were great representatives for our community and achieved many positive outcomes during their terms.” Council elected its Mayor on Friday installing Cr. Anita Rank in the key role. A focus on community development and building the shire’s economic base is a focus for new Glenelg Shire Council Mayor. The experienced councillor, who was first elected in 2012, will serve as Mayor for the next 12 months. Cr Rank said she was honoured by the election and was looking forward to the challenge of the role.
“It is an extremely exciting time for our Shire as we look to further strengthen our economic base, attracting new investment to the region, building our tourism sector, and delivering important projects for our residents,” she said. “I look forward to working with our chamber, who have vast experiences from a variety of backgrounds, to ensure the best outcomes for our community.” Cr Rank, who lives in Portland with her husband Malcolm and son Lachlan, is a Portland District Health board member and executive officer of the Committee for Portland, a business advocacy group. Formulating a strong council plan for the next four years and delivering quality outcomes for ratepayers is high on Cr Rank’s work plan. “We have a great opportunity in the shire to continue our vision of Growing Glenelg and as a united council we will do our best to make this the best place to work, invest and live,” she said.

PERFECT TIME TO VISIT BOOL LAGOON The first ordinary council meeting of the term will be held on Tuesday, November 22. Below - Newly elected Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr. Anita Rank.
Recent heavy rainfall events across the South East and Western Victoria have seen record flows entering the Bool Lagoon system. Bool Lagoon has an agreed water level as specified in the Bool Lagoon and Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park Management and RAMSAR Plan. When at this capacity, the regulator is opened to allow flow down Drain M towards Lake George and to upper south east wetlands via the Bakers Range Watercourse. South Eastern Water Conservation and Drainage (SEWCD) Board Drainage Operations Manager Lee Morgan said the capacity level was reached following heavy (44mm) rainfall in the Wimmera district early September. “Unprecedented and continuous rain this season put some pressure on the system; at its peak flows entered Bool Lagoon at 227 megalitres an hour – just days prior it was 5 megalitres per hour,” Mr Morgan said. “Mosquito Creek inflows are three times faster than the Drain M outflow and Bool Lagoon is managed as a balancing storage. The Drainage Operations team has been working around the clock to monitor flows, and regularly communicating with landholders daily. We recognise that heavy rainfall can impact on surrounding properties and cause inconvenience, however the environmental benefit of having so much water back in our landscape is obvious. Our local wildlife is flourishing, there is life back at Bool Lagoon and other wetlands, and Lake George is full for the first time in many years with flows from the lake entering the sea.” Natural Resources South East Lower South East District Manager Ross Anderson said it has been exhilarating to see water returning to the area. “Bool Lagoon is raucous with breeding waterfowl, frogs and other wildlife,” Mr Anderson said. “We haven’t seen water like this at the park this century, and being more ecologically diverse than Kakadu, it’s well worth a visit.” Bool Lagoon is open to the public for day trips and camping, visit the National Parks SA website, www.parks. sa.gov.au, to book and pay before you go.

FAMILY FUN IN MERINO
Mount Gambier is joining Melanoma March next year, becoming part of the Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) awareness and fundraising campaign for the first time. The event is set down for Sunday, March 5, at 8am at Mount Gambier’s Blue Lake and will be one of 17 locations taking part across Australia. The month long fundraising and melanoma awareness campaign was established as a small, local event in Sydney in 2012 but Melanoma March has continued to grow year-onyear and is now a collaborative effort between MIA, melanomaWA, Australian Melanoma Research Foundation and Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc. giving the campaign a truly national reach. Melanoma March is a fun community event where participants unite together and walk or march along a short course to raise awareness and funds for life-saving research. The local organising committee have all been affected by melanoma in some way, with two committee members having lost mothers and grandmothers to the disease. One committee member has also had a melanoma and had it removed. Committee member Francesca Dickson was approached by
If you are looking for a great day out for the whole family with entertainment for everyone at a low cost then the Merino Community Festival is for you. With five successful festivals under thier belts, where more than 500 people passed through the gates each year, the committee is enthusiastically organising a bigger and better 2016 festival. This year’s Merino Community Festival will be held on Saturday, November 26, from 1pm at the Merino Recreation Reserve. The entertainment for the younger members of the family will once again be a highlight at a very affordable price. There will be a range of activities including Zorb balls, UFO Cars, a dunk tank, bungee run, jumping castles, mobile zoo, merry-go-round and a mechanical bull ride. The very popular Spin Out Thrill Ride will once again be there, which will no doubt please the older kids. There is a large
a friend in Adelaide, whose best friend passed away in his 40s, to see if Mount Gambier would get involved. “I said I would try and then one of my friend’s mum passed away from melanoma,” Francesca said. “I got in touch with Australian Melanoma Research Foundation development executive Rachael Sporn (pictured above), who lost her grandmother to melanoma, and then got a committee together. Also being a teacher I think we could educate children and families more about sun safety.” Touted as Australia’s cancer, Australia has one of the highest incidences of melanoma in the world with more than 13,000 new cases diagnosed each year. In 20–34 year-olds, melanoma kills more young Australians than any other single cancer. variety of market stalls to grab a bargain at and lots of food stalls to tempt the tastebuds, bar facilities and live music all day by local musicians. The Hamilton Motorcycle Club will be holding a race day and non-members are able to pay a day member fee to join in the races and enjoy the picturesque course at Merino. The Quickshear competition starts at 6pm with excellent prize money up for grabs for those keen to compete. The success of the past five festival’s has
allowed the committee to donate more than $8000 to several community, school and sporting groups from Merino, Digby, Casterton and Hamilton who were involved in some way in the festival. Entry for $10 per adult and $15 wrist bands for kids, which allows them unlimited access to all kids’ entertainment, making this arguably the best value festival in the Western District. Jaycee Kindergarten’s first class has reunited – 50 years after first packing their lunch boxes. Portland’s Andrea Bolte was in that first class and said her children also attended the much-loved centre. “I remember having a wonderful time at Jaycees. The kindergarten was brand new with so many wonderful play areas,” she said. The celebrations included displays of memorabilia from an exhumed time capsule, hundreds of photos featuring classes from over the past 50 years, plus plenty of activities for children. Jaycee’s current class has also collected items to be added to a new time capsule which was buried as part of the event. THE ARCHES OF ALLENDALE 26 William Street, ALLENDALE EAST This award winning holiday rental accommodation facility looms as a unique opportunity. “The Arches of Allendale” renovated church is currently operating as a burgeoning tourism icon, taking out this year’s Stayz Most Unique Property in Australia Award, but the options for a potential new owner are many. What started as a retirement project, bringing life back to the simple church property morphed into a business success story and any future owners could continue to run the boutique accommodation
facility, with bookings until May next year and enquiries through until at least August. There are other options though, with the main church precinct making the perfect home with the opportunity to still run a bed & breakfast operation in the annexe of the adjoining property. The entire property could also be converted to a stunning family home. The main church property boasts among its many features three bedrooms, three living areas, a fully equipped kitchen, landscaped gardens and solar power.
The annexe has a separate entrance with a kitchenette, bedroom and bathroom, perfect for a cosy B&B retreat. Head to www.archesofallendale.com for more details. For sale by expression of interest.

COMBINING OLD WORLD CHARM WITH 21ST CENTURY LUXURY
45 Sassanowsky Road, Mount Gambier
For sale is this entertainer’s delight, a family haven, the perfect rural escape or in some cases all three – that is what is on offer with this unique Sassanowksy Road, Mount Gambier property. Built with unrivalled attention to detail, the spacious home was built in 2000 but paying homage to the 1900s, from the style of the home to the recycled materials incorporated in the luxury property. Sandstone sourced from a
demolished 1900s Adelaide heritage house, that took 30 days to cut and match to the remaining brickwork and stone used in the home, is a feature of the home’s exterior, while the old Baltic pine kitchen cabinetry is also recycled from another 1900s house and the floorboards throughout are also recycled. The heights and profiles of the home are also in keeping with 1900s architecture, with 12 foot ceilings,
Recycled baltic pine kitchen
high skirting boards, intricate cornice, architrave and ceiling rose craftsmanship, and stunning cedar windows and doors. Built on a five acre allotment with large frontage, the 49sq homestead style property, boasts a bull nose verandah highlighted by the powder coated original old style cast aluminium lacework, with the large verandah posts with heritage capping all adding to the 1900s feel. And along with the authentic sandstone, the exterior brickwork is also historically accurate with old style 70mm Littlehampton bricks, as well as plinth window seal bricks. The interior also maintains the integrity of the 1900s feel with picture rails, ceiling roses and antique brass light fittings throughout, with lead lighting also prominent. Chandeliers, stunning antique pieces, particularly in the bathroom, with its timber vanity and claw foot bath, all add to the old world feel of a home, steeped in history but brimming with modern luxuries – it’s a classic case of old world charm merged with 21st century luxury and convenience. The well appointed kitchen is a study in contrasts, from the recycled Baltic pine cupboards, antique styled oven and vintage splashback tiles to the Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, cleverly disguised with a Baltic pine door and a spacious walk in pantry. The living room also typifies this blending of old and new, with an ornamental reproduction fireplace and antique fittings, including a gold mirror, sitting side by side with surround sound and TV and Foxtel wall points – the best of both worlds. And speaking of luxury, the indoor lap pool is a stunning feature of the home. lifestyle1.net | 24
Practical, with its 17m inground swimming lane, complete with adjoining semi circle recreation area for the younger swimmer, the current owners can attest to the value of being able to walk from your bedroom straight to the pool for a morning wake up swim or an after exercise cool down and recovery session. The pool area features sandstone pots, timber seating and terracotta floor tiles, with a handy storage room,
with the displayed pool toys, including slippery dip and flotation aids all part of the sale. And speaking of toys, there is plenty of room for cars, boats and other large scale “toys” with garaging for nine cars on site. The 90m2 green colourbond shed with five bays. The main garage area needs to be seen to be believed, doubling as a stunning entertaining room, completed with plenty of storage space, a stone feature wall sourced from Western Australia, laminated bench tops and a Delta Heat Wood Fire with new flue kit. In keeping with the rest of the home, a cedar wall and ceiling rose with pendant light are two of the key features of the space. Never has a space been so multipurpose. A concealed laundry trough and mixer is all part of the main garage, which has three metre high ceilings, racedeck plastic flooring and a hidden four metre concrete car pit and yet it is a sophisticated entertaining area for all those special occasion events. The main garage, which also includes a fully self contained one bedroom guest flat, including spacious kitchen and dining area and separate bathroom, gives an indication to the quality of this unique space. Completed at the end of 2015, the rear garden has undergone a complete transformation. Cape Jaffa stone is a feature of
Newly manicured rear garden
the new look area, with large stone retaining walls, stone planter boxes and a feature wall with planter box and colonial clock ornament all crafted from the locally sourced, seaside stone. An antique water feature is the centre piece of the lush area, which also has a large cypress pergola, river pebbles in the garden beds and Bamstone pavers, from Port Fairy. The rear garden also features ground lighting, a sprinkler system and the pool storage shed. The catchcry in real estate has always been location, location, location and this Sassanowksy Road home certainly ticks all those boxes, giving you the tranquillity of rural living while still being only 10 minutes from Mount Gambier’s city centre and only five minutes to Tension Woods College and Mount Gambier High School and a 400m stroll to Compton Primary School. Other features of this four bedroom home is built in robes throughout, three phase power, a bore, 10,000 gallon rainwater tanks and a kerbed bitumen drive. Add the brioche buns, cut side down, and cook for 2 minutes or until lightly toasted. Set aside. Chargrill half the bacon for 3 minutes each side or until crisp. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel and cover to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining bacon. Spread the bases of the buns with tomato relish. Top with rocket, patties and bacon. Drizzle with extra chipotle barbecue sauce and top with brioche tops. Serve with onion rings.
CONSTRUCTION STARTS ON NEW LOCALLY OWNED SUPERMARKET A new Foodland supermarket owned and operated by South Australian family company, Carter’s Retail Group, will open in Mount Gambier early next year. Construction work has commenced on the large scale, modern full range supermarket located within the Mount Gambier Central Shopping Centre on Helen Street (between Kmart and Best and Less). Carter’s Retail Group owns and operates independent supermarkets throughout regional South Australia, including Naracoorte and Robe. Carter’s Retail Group owner Tim Carter, said the new supermarket would offer the people of Mount Gambier the choice of independent shopping in a supermarket unlike any other in the city. “The major emphasis of the supermarket will be on South Australian produce and brands,” he said. “It will include an in-store bakery, full scale butcher and fresh meat production, gourmet service deli, fresh fruit and vegetables and an artisan cheese bar. “We have established strong relationship with many South Australian food producers during our 20 years in retail and customers can expect to find brands and products in Mount Gambier Foodland that are often not available in the chain supermarkets. “We are excited to be investing in Mount Gambier and to give the residents and district of Mount Gambier the choice of shopping with a great
local S.A. independent brand. “All my family works within our stores and we are very customer driven. We listen to our customers’ needs and ideas and value the views of our customers and staff.” Mr Carter said the new Foodland store would provide a new level of fitout and customer service for the Mount Gambier region. Because the store was locally owned, profits would remain in South Australia rather than going interstate or overseas. “Customers can expect good old fashioned customer service and will not have to deal with self-serve checkouts,” he said. The new store will result in the creation of between 50 and 60 jobs with interviews for new positions expected to commence locally in early 2017.
Foodland’s chief executive officer Con Sciacca said the Mount Gambier Foodland was one of a number of new Foodland outlets being opened across the State between now and 2020. “We are continuing to grow, despite competition from existing and new market entrants,” he said. In February this year, Foodland was named the Australian Supermarket of the Year for 2015 by leading market research agency Roy Morgan – the second time Foodland has won the award in three years. The award means that Foodland’s customers are the most satisfied of any supermarket group in Australia.
A long standing volunteer and a vital community service have been recognised as the curtain fell on the 2016 Seniors Festival. An afternoon tea at the Mount Gambier Senior Citizens Centre was the culmination of a month of activities, with the Senior of the Year and Recreation Award both presented. Long time Lioness Vivienne Hutchinson was honoured for her commitment to humanitarian and community service, while the Mount Gambier Lioness Club took home the Recreation Award in honour of its library home delivery service. Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee was also part of the official closing proceedings. “Over the past two weeks, the festival has highlighted the services, activities and lifestyles available to our seniors,” Mayor Lee said. “The contribution of many individuals and local service providers and community groups have made this possible.” Mount Gambier City Lions Club representative Mike Tuohy handed over the Senior of the Year accolade to Vivienne Hutchinson, recognising her 37 years of service as a Lioness, including being inducted as a life member, and her recent joining of the local Probus Club.
Vivienne has also received the prestigious James D Richardson Honour in 2014 in recognition of her work which included support across many fundraising activities to improve community welfare, dedicating her time as a Lioness with executive and board positions, including as club president for two separate terms. Vivienne is also a familiar face at the Lady Nelson Visitor and Discovery Centre. “I just couldn’t believe it when I was phoned up to be told I had won - I thought you’ve got to be kidding,” Vivienne said, at Sunday’s presentation. “I think what I’ve done over the years, I’ve enjoyed doing. If you can help someone else who’s doing it a little bit tougher then that’s a good thing.” The Mount Gambier Lioness Club received their award from the Lions Club of Mount Gambier representative Allan Dowdell. “The Lioness Club delivers books to people who can’t readily access the Mount Gambier Library,” Allan said. “A book has a wonderful transformative power to take readers to new places. Many seniors stay connected through this important service.”
Accepting on the club’s behalf, president Jan Shelton said it was an honour to receive the Recreation Award and thanked the library staff for the part they play in book selection. “Over 39 years the Lioness Club has given 6000 hours to this service, with two ladies delivering the books every fortnight,” Jan said.

HOMECOMING FOR LOCAL ACTOR You can thank Jennifer Barry’s mother Cecile for your chance to enjoy the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio

our run in Adelaide,” Jennifer said. “Mum said to me that there’s a really big theatre loving community in Mount Gambier and we should bring the show here.” The Wehl Street Theatre loomed as the obvious venue with its old world feel, perfectly complementing the vibe of the show, which is a somewhat comedic look at the experience of attending a 1950s radio drama recording. “It is basically recreating a time when people would come and watch those popular radio serials being recorded,” Jennifer said. Benjamin Maio Mackay is the man behind this show and Jennifer has worked on a number of productions with Benjamin over the course of her fledgling career. “Great Detectives of Old Time Radio Live is like a revival of a previous show,” Jennifer said. “Benjamin just wanted to tweak a show that had already been a success and I do think it is a better show.” The Tenison Woods College graduate is excited to be returning home. She left school in 2007, enjoyed a gap year and then started her tertiary study in 2009 at UniSA’s Magill Campus in Adelaide, studying a Bachelor of Media Arts. “I focussed on television and film with some theatre acting as well,” Jennifer said. “When you’re 17, you’re not really sure what you want to do but I decided I might as well do something I really like.” Somewhat surprisingly, though, Jennifer was a shy child, and it
was only in her early teens that drama and performance saw a more confident girl emerge. “It probably started in Year 6 when I had to be part of the Year 6 production,” Jennifer said. “I did start to come out of my shell and started cracking jokes in class and having a good time with people I wouldn’t normally hang out with.” It was in Year 11 and 12 that acting became a genuine focus and passion as Jennifer tried her hand at more serious drama rather than just comedic work. It was drama teacher Jess Foster that inspired and mentored Jennifer. “She sort of developed the skills within me a lot more than any other teacher I’d had,” she said. “She pushed me to keep going.”
During her gap year, Jennifer was part of a Mount Gambier based arts program. Theatre has become the focus of the 26 year old’s career. “You get to feed off the audience,” Jennifer said. “They are right in your face.” Jennifer is hopeful Mount Gambier audiences will come out to enjoy the show that promises mystery, intrigue and comedy and has enjoyed hugely successful seasons in Sydney Fringe and in Adelaide. “It is a great opportunity for all generations to experience live radio from the 1950s,” Jennifer said. “Younger people can come and experience it for the first time and older people can relive their own memories from the 1950s.” The will be two shows only and bookings can be made at https://www. trybooking.com/NMKW. The shows are set down for Saturday, December 17, at 2pm and 7pm. Graduating from university in 2013, Jennifer has been involved in the Adelaide Fringe Festival numerous years, collaborating with Black Cat Theatre, Performing Under Milk Wood in 2013, Commedia dell’Arte in 2014 and in 2015 performed The Trial based on the novel by Franz Kafka and ‘Great Detectives Live’ with Preachrs Podcast OnLine and OnStage. In 2016, she had the opportunity to work with Preachrs Podcast OnLine and OnStage again in Matthew Reilly’s Ice Station Live. Matthew Reilly is Australia’s number one best selling author and, through voice work, she had the chance to portray Kirsty Hensliegh, a 12 year old daughter of a deceased scientist. She has also attended acting workshops hosted by Actors Ink and NIDA. worried that Trump is going to be bad. I won’t make out that I know anything much but as I understand it one of his big plans is to concentrate time and money on improving the United States; America will not continue to be the world’s police any more. That sounds pretty good to me. So they’ll stop making things worse in countries all around the world and concentrate on stuffing up their own country. They’re like the neighbour who wants to tell you all about how you need to cut your grass and wash your car while there are mass murders and meth labs at their house. Can he really make the place any worse? Don’t we already hate them? Probably because we’re a little jealous really. Speaking of jealousy, I’ve got to say that I am actually a little jealous that they get him as President. Imagine what it would be like to have a leader who was prepared to stand for something and said what he thought, regardless of what people think about it. There’s no doubt about what you’re getting with Trump. A thought comes into his head and he will express it to people, whether it is fully formed and intelligent or not. He doesn’t care what anyone thinks; he will say and do exactly what he wants. No puppets trotting out the latest buzz words there. He does have a parliament that have to approve things anyway, doesn’t he? Yes he’s crazy but they’re not all crazy, are they? I’ve got a feeling we should all be

since the time I auditioned for a porn movie. I thought I’d be starring as a customer at Cash Converters, pawning my TV, and instead I was starring as a pool cleaner. And my main role in the movie wasn’t going to be cleaning pools. It could be worse though. Just imagine what life is going to be like after Donald Trump gets inaugurated as the President of the United States. To be honest I actually don’t think it’s going to be as bad as everyone seems to think. I really don’t know why we’re so worried about what is happening in American politics. Haven’t we got enough problems of our own. Pauline Hanson. Bob Katter. Jay Weatherill. Malcolm Turnbull. Bill Shorten. I don’t think we’re in any position to judge anyone on who they’re electing. North Korea can judge the United States on who they elected. They didn’t elect their problem. He was forced on them. Trump actually reminds me a little of Kim Jong Un to be honest. They’re both nuts. They both have bad hairdos. They both think they’re the most powerful man in the world. They’ve both had the filter between their brain and their mouth surgically removed. It’s like they’re brothers. I’m honestly not that

Well boy do I feel silly. I went and booked myself in for an exotic Thai massage last week. Let’s just say, her definition of massage and my definition of massage did not match up. I would have thought a masseuse would traditionally use their hands but this young lady was using all parts of her body. I told her about my sore back and she instead concentrated on other parts of my body. he must have known something about pressure points that I didn’t know. As for her uniform, if she wasn’t working so hard she would have gotten cold. My back doesn’t feel any better by the way. I haven’t been this embarrassed

MOUNT GAMBIER CENTRAL TURNS 30 BUT LOIS GETS THE GIFT Lois Brooker, of Mount Gambier, had the winning combination to unlock the Hyundai i30 key box at Mount
Gambier Central at the end of last month. Mount Gambier Central ran the competition ‘Shop to Win a Hyundai
i30’ during October to celebrate their 30th Birthday. Customers who spent $10 or more at any food, $30 or more at any specialty and $60 or more in one transaction at Kmart received an entry into the draw to be in the running to win the Hyundai i30. Each day during the month a preliminary winner was drawn who received a code to try in the Hyundai i30 key box and a $30 Mount Gambier Central EFTPOS card. The 30 preliminary winners were then invited to Mount Gambier Central on Saturday, October 29 to try their code in the Hyundai i30 key box, with Lois being the lucky winner. Lois was excited to win the Hyundai i30 commenting that she had never won anything before. Lois was actually speechless after winning
the Hyundai i30, but did mention that she would be giving her old car to her daughter and will enjoy driving he brand new Hyundai i30. Mount Gambier Central centre manager Jane Read said it had been an exciting month with Mount Gambier Central celebrating 30 years since it first opened. “And it was such a pleasure to run a competition where our customers had the chance to win a Hyundai i30,” Jane said. “A big thank you to Barry Maney Hyundai who supplied the car for the competition.” For more competition and information on Mount Gambier Central visit www.mountgambiercentral.com. au or check them out on Facebook at mountgambiercentral

MARKET LOOKS TO SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS
To encourage local artists, the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier has created a gallery space in the foyer of its Saturday Market. The first artist on display is Mount Gambeir based surrealist Matt

Sheehy whose work has been honoured by solo exhibitions at Riddoch Gallery and in Adelaide. “Painting is my way of making sense of the world,” Matt said. “Some are
stories and some are riddles that I put on canvas to question and muse over.” With titles like ‘Stepping between the Worlds’ and ‘Mantis Man’, Matt’s symbolism and mystery are rendered in vibrant colours to create a talking point in any home. “When I moved to Mount Gambier I found something unexpected, a haunted house next to a haunted jail, and I felt an energy, deep, dark, and hidden, inspiring visions of flowing plasmic colour, writhing like living things,” Matt said. “Clouds, mountains, seas and rivers rolling through reality like a glacier and yet fiercely alive. These are the things I put onto canvas, as a way to see them outside of my minds eye, as a way to show others my evolving inner space and the mystery of having memories of places that don’t exist.” Matt Sheehy’s paintings can be purchased at Rotary Market any Saturday morning for as little as $400. A small commission will go to Rotary causes. The market is on Kennedy Avenue, behind Harvey Norman.
LIMESTONE COAST SCHOOL WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING CHALLENGE The Limestone Coast Local Government Association (LCLGA) together with the seven Councils in the Limestone Coast Region have launched a School Waste Reduction and Recycling Challenge. The Limestone Coast School Waste Reduction and Recycling Challenge is a challenge that will be held for the first time from 6 February to 7 April 2017, and will initially be held over three years. It is open to all primary and secondary schools in the Limestone Coast. The competition is being introduced to engage students in the design and implementation of strategies that promote waste reduction and recycling in schools. Schools will report on recycling and general waste data, then ranked according to which school collects the least general waste, the most recyclables or the least amount of general waste and recycling generated.
LIMESTONE COAST SCHOOL WASTE REDUCTION & RECYCLING CHALLENGE FEBRUARY 6 - APRIL 7, 2017
The competition is conducted on a per capita basis to allow schools of different sizes in the region to participate. Every two weeks, schools report their data and participating schools have an opportunity to see how their results compare to those of other participating schools and use these to encourage their school communities to do more. This “School Waste Reduction and Recycling Challenge” is part of a campaign driven by LCLGA’s Regional Waste Management Coordinator, June Saruwaka, which encourages schools to reduce the amount of recyclable material ending up in landfill. According to the Ambassador of the challenge, Louise Adams, “The program will not only shape young people’s behaviours now and in the future, but what a great opportunity for our youngest community members to lead by example and teach their families and adults in the community how we can build a brighter, cleaner, healthier, less wasteful and more sustainable future. Registration is now open and closes on the 2nd of December 2016.

WEAVING THEIR MAGIC Kerryn Fennell, Glenys Hughes, Michelle Jacquelin-Furr, Chris Pudney and Julianne Woodruff are a group of enthusiastic basket makers. They have been working together over the past year to present their finest collection of functional and decorative pieces for this exhibition of Flotsam and Flora. This passionate group of creators have embraced the abundance of
natural resources occurring in the South East region, which includes a bountiful selection of plant matter, ghost ropes from Limestone Coast beaches, and found embellishments. With a combination of weaving and coiling techniques on exhibition, visitors will be treated to an eclectic display of two and three dimensional pieces. Works will be for sale throughout the
exhibition and will include a selection of smaller baskets as gift items. Basketry once represented the essence of basics in everyday life. This ancient craft preceded the fine art of pottery. In fact, the shapes and textures of baskets were the first inspiration that primitive man used to begin the complex ceramic story. The Basket Weavers have taken some of these basic necessities and blended traditional and modern ideas in their journey of discovery. The Weavers will be working on current projects in the foyer area on Sunday, December 4, from 10.30am
to 12.30pm. This will be an excellent opportunity for visitors to chat with the artists about their work prior to the official opening. The exhibition of Flotsam & Flora will be officially opened by Eve Carlin, coordinator of the Port MacDonnell Community Complex, on Sunday, December 4, at 2pm in the main gallery. Flotsam & Flora by the Mount Gambier Basket Weavers and Coastal Treasures by the Twisted Threads Textile Group will be on show from Thursday, December 1, through to Tuesday, February 28, 2017. The Foyer and Gallery will be open 7 days, Monday to Thursday 9am–5pm, Friday 9am–8pm and Saturday & Sunday 9am–4pm.A raffle with prizes donated from each group will run throughout and the winning tickets will be drawn towards the conclusion of the exhibitions. Proceeds will go towards the Port MacDonnell Community Complex and tickets will be $1 each. Far left - Kerryn Fennell with her creation, Fish Trap. MAJOR EXHIBITION OPENS IN HAMILTON
A major exhibition featuring the work of one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists Ah Xian, is expected to draw much intrastate visitation to Hamilton. Ah Xian: Axiom, developed by Hamilton Gallery, brings together works from public and private collections from around Australia including Queensland Art Gallery, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. Such a large body of his work in a solo exhibition has not been seen in Australia since the 2003 exhibition, Ah Xian: A retrospective exhibition at Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane. The Chinese born Australian artist has been a resident of Sydney since 1990. His art-practice is conducted between both here and China, although he originally sought political asylum in Australia following the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. The themes explored in his art include humanity, cultural identity and spirituality. A highlight of the exhibition is the Gallery’s latest acquisition, Bust 35, 1999 from the artist’s China China series. This work and indeed the exhibition unites many of the Gallery’s major strengths: Asian art, porcelain and contemporary Australian art. The Asian art collection of Hamilton Gallery originates from the Herbert and May Shaw bequest, which constituted around a quarter of the entire bequest, and has grown to become one of the defining elements of the collection. This core aspect of the collection now rivals some State Gallery collections of that type. The exhibition Ah Xian: Axiom will be on display at Hamilton Gallery until February 26. A new promotional tourism video is highlighting the Great South West Walk is one of southwest Victoria’s “best kept secrets”. Former Victorian Premier Denis Napthine last week launched the production to a full house at Portland’s Cinema@PAC, describing the tourist attraction as “magnificent” and one that should be showcased on a national scale. The seven minute long production features committee members of the Friends of the Great South West Walk who highlight the stunning landscape features and unique flora and fauna of the trail, which was first established 33 years ago. The 250km trek, which weaves through the communities of Portland, Cape Bridgewater, and Nelson, across the capes of Discovery Bay and trailing the Glenelg River, is one of the region’s biggest tourist attractions, luring tens of thousands of visitors each year, including a growing international base. Dr Napthine, who has completed the walk with his family, said it was one of the region’s best kept secrets, featuring what he believes is Australia’s best beach Bridgewater Bay. Founding member of the Friends of the Great South West Walk Bill Golding, whose voice narrates much of the video, said the walk “uplifts the human spirit”. Mr Golding is a regular hosting tour groups on the walk and assisting in its maintenance, including clearing of tracks and maintenance of assets. He said the 25 regular volunteers, who work at weekends on the track, were instrumental in ensuring people continued to return to the much-loved walk. “Volunteering is the important part. It was with volunteers from

Portland High School that the walk was planned, designed and built in four weeks flat in 1983. It is through these volunteers that the community took the walk over and for almost 33 years has continued to maintain, upgrade and promote it.” Glenelg Shire CEO Greg Burgoyne said the “inspiring production”, made by local filmmaker Peter Corbett with funding assistance from council, would act as a marketing tool for the region. “This production is one that truly inspires you and illustrates how lucky we are to call the Glenelg Shire home,” he said. “Our tourism team will be using this short film to market our region to various clientele, including the cruise ship industry, in an effort to drive economic development and bolster tourist trade in our shire. “I urge people to assist in showcasing this unique walk, which I consider to be one of Australia’s most picturesque, to the rest of the world by sharing the video via social media.” The Friends of the Great South West Walk plan to sell copies of the production on Blu-Ray and DVD in the near future. The video can be viewed now at https:// www.facebook.com/192714714081671/ videos/1328429833843481/ . MOTOR DAY RELEGATES MACKRELL TO BRIDESMAID AGAIN
With defending champion Peter Gazzard taking a break from his hometown event in 2016, all eyes were on Mount Gambier’s Valley Lake hill climb track from November 4-6 to see who would see their name added to the honour role. Kevin Mackrell’s campaign for a
fourth Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb title was thwarted by the talent of eventual winner Dan Day (pictured above & below) and mechanical issues. Day showed composure under pressure, relegating competition leader Mackrell (pictured top right), heading into the
final run of the event, to second place with his final run of 51.11. Mackrell then had his final run to come and a chance to regain the lead, albeit narrow, that he had held all weekend. But the popular visitor, who has contested every hill climb since its inception, was forced from the start line with mechanical issues and Day was crowned the king, accepting his trophy from V8 Supercar legend Steven Richards. Day’s Subaru MRX enjoyed five out of a possible six runs up the Valley Lake hill, with his final two runs his best. Local hope Simon Feil (pictured above bottom right) matched his 2015 finish of third with a best run of 53 flat. PHOTOS COURTESY OF DARREN ARCHIBALD.
