COVER - WHEN ART AND FLAVOUR COLLIDE MHERICEL GOMEZ Mount Gambier’s Metro Bakery & Café was recently crowned the best bakery/ patisserie in Australia – the only regionally based business to take home a National Restaurant & Catering Award for Excellence. The award is a reflection of the hard work the entire Metro team puts in to make it a culinary hot spot in the region but much of the accolades have to go to the artists behind Metro’s much sought after creations - Norerriz Labrador & Mhericel Gomez.

Also hailing from the Philippines and with Spanish blood also running through her veins, Mhericel has had a very different journey leading her to Mount Gambier and Metro. “Baking is really a passion of mine and has been since I was really young,” she said. And so, when she headed to university to tackle a hospitality course, pastry baking was her specialty as she completed the five year course. Graduation saw her Qatar bound where she worked at the La Cigale Hotel in Doha. “That’s where I really trained,” Mhericel said. “I was there for five years, learning from French pastry chefs.” Singapore was next on the itinerary where she worked for a family owned pastry shop. Her experience there was what tempted her to join the Metro team. “I had always wanted to move to Australia back when I was a student and because I was single I thought I would try one of the big cities,” Mhericel said. “But most of those jobs offered training that I already had and when I skyped with Toni she was so lovely and I thought it would be good to work for another family owned business.” Mhericel clocked up two years at Metro in October and she has still had a chance to visit the likes of Sydney and Melbourne. “I love travelling,” Mhericel said. “It is an opportunity for me to visit other pastry shops and see what’s new and try things from other pastry chefs. Every time I go to Melbourne or Sydney I am always going into pastry shops and trying as much as I can.” Mhericel has

NORERRIZ LABRADOR When your family owns a bakery, there’s a fair chance you might show an interest in that industry and that’s what happened to Norerriz. “When I was in elementary school my family owned a bakery,” he said. “My dad is a pastry chef and my mum is a home baker.” It meant Norerriz was licking spoons and stirring batter from a young age. Growing up in the Philippines, Norerriz was initially headed to law school after he finished college. “But I had a change of plans and thought maybe I would follow in the footsteps of my father,” he said. His career started at the Shangri La Hotel in Manilla where he spent two years training as a pastry chef before transferring to the Resorts World Hotel as a pastry chef and assistant manager. Australia then beckoned and Norerriz called Sydney home, arriving two years ago, and working at the Star Casino. “It was in Australia that I got my formal qualifications,” Norerriz said. Qualifications that saw him secure his current role as head pastry chef at Metro. “For me it’s about flavour and colour,” Norerriz said. “Being a pastry chef is so much more artistic – the colours and shapes.” And so,

as his pastry chef father approached retirement, Norerriz is carrying on the family tradition right on our doorstep. “It’s in my blood,” he said. “My dad was so proud of me when we won the award.” Having spent his entire working life in busy cities, working for big corporate employers, Metro loomed as a wonderful change of pace and so Norerriz jumped at the chance to call Mount Gambier home, along with his wife – whom he met at the Shangri La and who has followed him wherever his career has taken him since. “To be able to bring the quality of pastries you expect in the city to the country has been great,” Norerriz said. also spent time in France where she also gave her tastebuds a real pastry workout. She has that unique gift where she can take a bite of a product and ascertain the ingredients, heading back to Mount Gambier to create her own take. In fact many of the mousse cakes at Metro are Mhericel’s own recipes. “Sometimes when I am bored at home I try and create new pastries,” she said.

And while Metro continues to create its award winning pastries, the bakehouse has big plans for the future with plated desserts and hand crafted chocolates – along with wine matching. “I know wine is big in this region so we want to bring European quality desserts here and match them with the local wines,” Norerriz said. WINNING THE FASHION STAKES It might be a new format this time round but for the third time in four years, Abby Von Duve has been named as a State finalist in Fashions on the Field. Courtesy of her best dressed accolade at the Millicent Cup, at the Penola Racecourse, this year, Abby won an invite to last Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup function at Morphettville. And despite some last minute glitches, that would have truly rattled a less experienced fashionista, Abby put together a winning ensemble and is now one of 24 finalists vying for the top honour, either as adjudged by the judging panel or the People’s Choice accolade. As soon as Abby realised she would be competing at the Morphettville competition she ordered a dress from the Spring Racing collection and she had a hat she was already planning on remodelling as part of the ensemble. “It was a black and white vintage hat, very 80s, with flowers, and I had plans to paint it and make it white,” Abby said. “But then I found out on the Thursday before the competition that the dress wasn’t going to be here on time.” Fortunately the Mangos Fashion retail assistant, where she focuses strongly on the online and social media presence of the Mount Gambier boutique, had a store full of clothes. “I just looked through the shop and tried on everything that would go with the hat and that fitted,” Abby said. “I was lucky. I had spent so much time on the hat, I really wanted to wear it.” Once she solved the issue of the missing dress, which will now get an outing to the Dunkeld Races this month, Abby was happy with the look she created and clearly so were the judges. Abby usually has something handcrafted or remodelled as part of each of her race day competition outfits – she has been a Fashions on the Field regular for the past four years, not only in this region, where she always attends the Coonawarra Vignerons Cup, Millicent Cup, Mount Gambier Gold Cup and Dunkeld Cup, but at other country cups across the State, as well as the Adelaide Cup and a trip to the Caulfield Cup last year. “I won the Kangaroo Island Fashions on the Field with a skirt and top I made out of mum’s store window display,” Abby said. Mum, Michelle Discianni, runs Canopy Interiors, giving her stylish daughter access to some impressive fabrics. “She has some beautiful fabrics that are really nice for dressmaking – they are heavy and drape really well,” Abby said. “I would pick the best ones and take them home.” And she clearly knows what she’s doing, her 2016 State finalist adding to the same accolade in 2013 and ’14. “When I won Strathalbyn, it was a dress from China that cost mum about $20,” Abby said. “I always have a vintage piece that I’ve reconstructed or something I’ve made from scratch.” Mum Michelle earned the call up to last week’s Morphettville event and from the fashion to the food, it was a great lifestyle1.net | 04

day out. “Jen Marsh was there, who I know from all the local Fashions on the Field, as well as Megan Caldersmith, so there were some familiar faces.” In fact, Abby is part of a close knit local contingent of race going fashion lovers, including Jen Marsh and the likes of Helen and Kimmi Varcoe and Brianna Scanlon. “We all get along and if we are heading to a race meeting alone we always check in with each other,” Abby said. “We really do get along well and sometimes help each other, not like some of the city meetings. When I went to the Caulfield Cup there were girls in tears because they didn’t get past their heats and I couldn’t believe it.”Abby struggles to remember a time when she wasn’t interested in fashion, remembering when she was young that her mum would make her change out of her school uniform and allow her one, already selected outfit, to wear for the rest of the day. “If she didn’t do that, I would change five times a day,” Abby said. “I always wanted to put on something prettier or different.” Abby did start a stylist business a few years

ago and she does still offer that service, also working from time to time on film projects and photo shoots. While she gives her mother’s sense of style the tick of approval, she has had a hand in her styling for years. “When we used to go to Adelaide for dad’s treatment, she would send me off with a limit and tell me she needed a jacket, a few work tops and black pants and I would come back with it all,” Abby said. She actually makes a valid point when it comes to putting your fashion decisions in the hands of the experts. “When you go to a special event, you get your hair and make up done and yet you don’t ask an expert to put your outfit together,” she said. “You don’t cut your own hair so why would you dress yourself. When you are styling someone, you don’t want to change them just want them to think outside the box.” Voting in the People’s Choice has opened so head to the Races SA facebook page to vote for Abby. Official judging and announcement of the winner is set down for August 2017.

SCHOOLIES WITH A DIFFERENCE Ten Bayview College students are about to embark on a new Schoolies with a Cause program that will help build self-sufficiency in a Vietnamese community. In previous years Bayview students have been involved in structural building projects in Vietnam; this year they will be building community capacity and skills. Students on the 10 day program, from November 20, to the small agricultural community of Tra Bong in central Vietnam, will join a World Vision Area Development Program (ADP) to help local people with English, first aid and agricultural skills. The students will be led by Bayview teachers Zac Jeffries, Andy Murrell and Lisa Crute. Mr Jeffries said area development programs aim to make

communities more self-reliant. “It’s a capacity building program that’s like planting a seed to help communities which have suffered setbacks such as natural disasters or war to get back on their feet and break the poverty cycle,” he said. The students will teach English and first aid to local children who will in turn pass on that knowledge to other local children. “Research shows that initiatives to build community capacity and selfsufficiency will have better long-term outcomes than simply helping with a construction project,” Mr Jeffries said. “We also want students to learn that foreign aid involves a wide range of areas when addressing human development issues. If students can

make a link between their talents and interests and a need they identify, we feel that would be a success.” The trip also benefits Bayview students and will include cultural orientation, service and learning, and a rest and reflection phase. “The students will see where fundraising goes through programs such as World Vision and meet the children who benefit from their fundraising efforts,” Mr Jeffries said. “It will be a cultural exchange where students can contrast the differences between their countries but also find what they have in common. Our students will learn empathy for another culture and history while also reflecting on their own lives; how their skills and interests might be of use in this developing part of the world.” Mr Jeffries said it would be the first overseas experience for some of the Bayview students. “It’s a very positive way to celebrate the end of their secondary education.” 2016 CONTINGENT OF STUDENTS THAT ARE HEADING TO VIETNAM AS PART OF SCHOOLIES FOR A CAUSE Georgina Delaney-Noad Callum Schultz Katie McPherson Lauralee Hol Lachlan Murrell Rachael Roberts Harrison Sealey Blayney Newton Ebony Ball Brooke Stiles

NO TIME TO WASTE Georgia Quick is an expert juggler. Not the circus performer kind - the 19 year old just has a lot of balls in

the air as she time manages her study and work commitments along with an emerging photography enterprise.

Since completing Year 12 at Mount Gambier High School, and having a gap year, where she worked at Chapman’s Newsagency, where she has worked since she was 15 and still works as a casual, Georgia has embarked on tertiary study to become a veterinary nurse. Studying online, through the Sydney-based Open College, her off campus approach to study has allowed her to continue working as well as develop her photography – a hobby that is fast becoming a genuine career option. She is already the official Mac’s Hotel photographer, capturing the fun and frivolity every weekend for the hotel’s social media platforms. And as we sit in the throes of winter sport presentation season and the onset of school formals and graduations, her name is bound to pop up again and again. Georgia was also recently the official photographer for the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards, with 21st birthdays and other special occasions already on the resume, including some work for MJ Dance Studio as well. “I got my first camera when I was in Year 10,” Georgia said. “I was basically taking photos of flowers and things like that and it just grew from there. I also used to take heaps of photos of our dog as well but she’s older now and really doesn’t like it as much.” She studied photography for two years at school and while she currently runs her fledgling business from a facebook page – Georgia Page Photography – she is already looking into a more formal arrangement as the job requests start to pile up. Georgia’s sister Alex has been a huge help, covering for her busy sister when

commitments clash, and designing her corporate image, including business cards. But as much as she loves her photography, completing her vet nurse studies is still priority one. “I absolutely love the photography but I am really committed to finishing my study,” she said. “I have done some work experience at Gambier Vets and I absolutely loved it and the good thing about photography is you can still do it regardless of what else you are up to or what job you have.” As she comes to the end of her first year of the three year course, Georgia has become an expert at time management. “I prefer being busy anyway,” she said. “I think I take after mum – she’s always on the go.” Like so many photographers, online tutorials and chat rooms have become her photography classroom, although she does have Louise Agnew as a mentor. “Louise is always happy to help me if I need to check something,” Georgia said. A former highland dancer, Georgia now captures the action, rather than

being part of it, although she is still active as a player for East Gambier Netball Club – where she also helps behind the bar when available – just another job the 19 year old squeezes into her busy schedule. Sporting a Nikon 0750, Georgia loves capturing graduations and debutante balls. “Doing the social photos is also fun because I am always meeting new people,” she said. Of course, overseas travel also beckons, once she has completed her vet nurse course, but you get the impression she’ll never be away from Mount Gambier too long. PHOTO COURTESY OF ALEX QUICK

Wattle Range COUNCIL

Back in August, Nathan Jenner, Chris Newell and Jesse Berkefeld asked fans to vote for them when their band Recreator was nominated for a South Australia Music Award in the Most Popular Rock Artists. Much like X Factor’s Louise Adams, Recreator needed the public’s support and they got it, making the top five and earning an invitation to the awards ceremony at the Norwood Concert Hall this Friday night. “It still feels surreal, but at the same time this is exactly what we’ve wanted, is to get national exposure and take our music to the next level in the Australian music scene,” Nathan said. “Hopefully it has put us and our album on the radar with industry people in the Australian music scene, and if we win then hopefully it opens up a lot more bigger opportunities.” There’s no doubt Recreator is keen to make inroads into the Australian music industry but also keen to promote the strong local music scene. “Hopefully it tells the music lifestyle1.net | 06

industry that Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast has an amazing music scene forming to rival the cities, and that we can no longer be ignored as just a country town and area,” Nathan said. “If we manage to win this, our speech will contain a special thanks to

Tom Wilson and his studio Bad Animal Productions, and also the other local bands here who are our friends. I’ll let them know that we are the new Seattle, and they better start taking notice.”

NEW LOOK CUP OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVES TAKE HOME MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The 2017 Coonawarra Vignerons Cup was launched last Friday at Hollick Wines, where guests were welcomed by Cup committee chair Tim Bailey and patron Wendy Hollick. Mr Bailey said he was very excited about how the 2017 Cup event was already shaping up. “We’ve had a tremendous response from sponsors this year, and we plan to match that with some new elements to the event that is being held on Thursday, January 12, in association with the Penola Racing Club, and Thoroughbred Racing SA,” he said. “I’m especially pleased to announce that our accompanying golf tournament - that is traditionally held on the preceding day, has a new major sponsor with Bridgestone Golf and the Dynacast Golf Group. This is a first for us. It will now be known as the Coonawarra Bridgestone Golf Masters, and will be held on Wednesday, January 11.” In another move to build on the popularity of the event, Mr Bailey said that there will be an extra 25 seats made available in the Coonawarra Vignerons marquee. “Our last cup

Two teenagers that have already represented Australia have been awarded the 2016 Trisha Flett & Sally-Jane Allen Sports Scholarship. Dual sports star Bella Stratford, who is currently juggling cricket and basketball at the elite level, and softball rising talent Georgia Hood shared the 2016 honours. This year marks the 26th time the scholarship has been awarded with 47 young South East athletes now having received assistance over that time. It is also the 17th time the award has been shared by two or more athletes. The scholarship fund was set up following a fundraiser, after the girls’ tragic deaths in a 1990 car accident, which saw the community give generously to allow the two families to set up this memorial scholarship. Each year the nominations are assessed by a group of the region’s PE teachers and each year it is a tough task to choose a winner or in so many cases winners. There were five nominees for the 2016 scholarship. Hockey goalkeeper Rachel Curtis, soccer star Tyler Johnston,

marquee event was sold out before Christmas, and we fully expect that that will happen again next year,” he said. “We’re feeling a renewed confidence in the sector, and believe that it will convert to some strong uptake.” He said that Stuart MacGill – former international cricketer and broadcaster, would be returning as MC, while a program of auctions would continue to provide the opportunity for marquee patrons to purchase some amazing Coonawarra wines. Tickets are now on sale for the 2017 Coonawarra Vignerons marquee, with a first release of 100 tickets made available for the public at $175 each until December 5 when all remaining tickets will be opened up. The Coonawarra Vignerons Cup has been run since 1982, and will be celebrating its 35th anniversary next year. Left - Coonawarra Vignerons patrons Doug Bowen & Wendy Hollick. who is in Singapore representing SA Country as we speak, and Kyle Moulden, an emerging karate talent, were the other three nominees. But in the end, the resumes of the joint winners were too impressive to ignore. Testament to Georgia’s talent is the fact she can’t play softball in Mount Gambier anymore. She is still a Warriors player and represents this region at junior State events, but the multi State representative is now spending most of her weekends in Adelaide as she attends State training, as well as representing the Secombe Tigers in

junior and division one ranks. Georgia’s batting is also a feature of her game and she won the batting award at this year’s Under 17 national championships. Since 2014 Georgia has been representing South Australia – sometimes in more than one age group in a year – and this year was selected in the 19 & Under Australian Squad to compete at the International Friendship Championships. She is currently aiming for selection in the Australian Youth team for the 2017 World Championships with the 2020 Olympics not unrealistically on her radar with softball’s return to the Olympic program. Bella has barely turned 15 but she has a jam packed resume that has seen her representing this region since 2010, and South Australia, in one sport or another, since 2014. Whether cricket or basketball, Bella has excelled, representing her school, region and State and this year she was also part of the 2016 Tenison Woods College Open Girls Knockout Football Championship winning line-up. Bella has represented the State in cricket at both Under 13 and Under 15 age groups since 2014 – playing both age groups in that year. On the basketball front, Bella was part of the national championship winning Under 17 Tenison Woods College team when she was only 13 and has represented SA Country in basketball since Under 14 level. This year she enjoyed a tour or New Zealand where she was the leading scorer for the silver medal winning Australian country team. The Trisha Flett & Sally-Jane Allen Sports Scholarship is also sponsored by Squashbrook and Sportscene Mount Gambier. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - MASSAGE MESSAGE... By ROBBIE TANSEL I’ve had a sore back for the last couple of weeks. I can’t really pinpoint it to any single incident or cause. I just started feeling some pain in my upper back about two weeks ago and over the last week or so I’ve added some lower back pain just to balance it out. I’m a man so I don’t really go to a doctor unless I’ve accidentally cut a chunk of my finger off with a blender or something. Several people have suggested I go to a chiropractor or a physiotherapist but I think that’s hippy claptrap. I have to admit the pain is

getting to the point that I probably can’t just keep ignoring it though. What I’ve decided to do is get a massage. I’ve had massages before and I’ve got to say I’m not a big fan. know lots of people love having strangers rubbing their bodies, but I’m just not one

of them. With this in mind I’m not going to get a plain old normal massage. I’m going to try an exotic Thai massage. I see them advertised regularly in the newspaper and they seem like they’re very popular because lots of people are offering them. They’re obviously the latest fashion like Pokemon Go or something. I’m not exactly sure what makes them so different from regular massages. The fact that they’re exotic might indicate that they’re going to play Enya music while they massage me, but I guess since they’re also Thai, maybe it will be native Thai music or something. Maybe instead of rubbing you down with oils they use a Green Curry stir fry. I’m looking forward to finding out though. Their advertisements don’t do a lot to help with the confusion either. I’m not sure why it’s relevant that the person giving me my exotic Thai massage will be mature, young, their first time in town, will provide me with a fun time or be sexy. I’ll be laying face down on a table and as long as he, she, or the transsexual (how is that relevant to a masseuse advertisement?) has good strong hands, that will be fine. I am a little concerned that so many of the exotic Thai massages are advertised to be delivered by Asian young ladies. Obviously the massage

COMING EVENTS coming from cultures in their region gives them a little advantage, but surely Australian girls can learn the necessary skills too. For some reason young Australian ladies do not have these skills. What are our daughters going to do for jobs if they can’t get into the expanding exotic Thai massage industry? Shouldn’t our governments be doing something? Tony? Troy? Malcolm? Jay? I actually asked some young ladies at the pub recently if they would be prepared to give me an exotic Thai massage and each one of them slapped me firmly across my face. They were so ashamed of their inability in this area that they lashed out at me for touching on such a sensitive subject. I don’t want the young girls of Asian background who grow up in Australia thinking the only career option open to them is being an exotic Thai masseuse either. Dick Smith has always been a passionate supporter of Australian industries. I think I might contact him and see if he’d be interested in partnering with me to set up a school or TAFE course to teach young Australian girls the skills of exotic Thai massage. Obviously we’d want everyone to know that they are Dick Smith College graduates so we’d want to put a Dick logo on them (maybe a tattoo). Now that we’ve got such an excellent plan, if you’d like to join the Dick Smith exotic Thai massage College or just test your skills on me, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

ADVERTORIAL - CHRISTMAS IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER What a ball we are having with our 21st Birthday Celebrations - it has been wonderful and we would love to thank everyone for their best wishes as we head in to the next 21 years and, of course, Christmas. Yes, Christmas is just around the corner.... Sorry, someone had to say it.....but with less than six weeks to go, it’s time to start getting those Christmas thoughts together. It has certainly been an interesting year weather wise and the spring moisture will allow us to continue with good plantings up to Christmas and beyond... hopefully, it would just be nicer if the winds would disappear!!. This spring we have been busier than ever, and being the largest nursery in the region, and only nursery in Mount Gambier, we have almost completed our expansion of the Limestone Coast Advanced Trees part of the business and the new gift shop area is packed full of ideas for the gardener, non-gardener. There is still plenty of stock arriving between now and Christmas, so call back frequently as its forever changing, of course, with all of our shipments of garden giftware, outdoor furniture, birdhouses, wall art and much of the ranges I found on my travels. Our huge pre-Christmas sale starts today with up to 70% off giftware, glazed and terracotta pots, wall art, statues and ornaments and water features. With reclaimed teak birdhouses from India, to wrought iron and cast iron ware from within Australia and statues from Indonesia, the range is overwhelming. Remember, too, that

much of our stock is handpicked from small batches made by developing and poor countries, so many items are one offs and we will never have them again. A great gift idea for that someone special, safe in the knowledge that no one else will have them. The Pot Shop section is still undergoing a transformation with a new container of pots just landed and being added to the new sales area as the days roll on more and more Christmas stock is being put out. You can lay-by now for Christmas and leave picking up until as late as Christmas Eve if you wish. A new shipment of A Grade teak outdoor furniture with added bar settings, four person settings and a whole new outdoor/conservatory range has just arrived and the website has been updated, too, with all of the current furniture additions. Our 2017 range of outdoor tables in travertine and marble, cast aluminium, PVC, German wicker with three year warranty, Teak is, of course, the premier outdoor furniture timber, with high oil content and has a lifetime warranty. A new shipment of Kubu (real wicker) has just come in too and we have added to this range a two seater bench to add to our already comprehensive range of garden benches, trees surround seats and outdoor swing seats. These blend well with our own imported ranges of furniture to offer the widest selection of quality outdoor furniture in the Limestone Coast and Western Districts. If you would like a new setting

for Christmas, don’t leave it too late as all of our containers have landed and been unpacked. Our online presence has increased immensely with the new look website and we are endeavouring to get an online shopping cart up and running soon as we have outgrown our local population incredibly over the past few years and with the mail order/online rose order and fruit tree sales now dominating our overall sales. Roses are being despatched via mail and courier all through the year along with fruit, ornamental trees and pittosporum and Box hedging as we are the lowest prices. We can freight throughout the readership area and right across Australia. A whole new range of our ever popular driftwood gift ideas and garden and seaside décor has just landed adding to the range of driftwood Christmas trees, wreaths and stars, and even reindeers (see advert opp. page) from the driftwood collected by villagers after the tidal waves in the Philippines, allowing them to rebuild their lives. We still have a few planters and wind chimes in driftwood and bamboo available at 25% off to clear. The farmyard and corrals are full again with an array of pigs, sheep, cows and chooks, right through to our metal oil drum animals that are intricately made by AIDS affected orphans in Zimbabwe. The new range in these has increased dramatically with a mini, ute and golf buggy eskies for this year plus a whole range of animals, even a surfing dog !! right through to a new bird palace,

not just any old birdhouse and a wine bottle holder in the shape of a pair of thongs. Our huge brass and copper weathervanes are $100 off in the sale and are ideal for mounting on houses and outbuilding due to their size. We also have cast aluminium weathervanes for those in coastal areas. Gardenarium and The Pot Shop has also brought in a great range of new glass terrariums, (see advert) large decorative jars, glass candle holders, ideal for mini terrariums, incense oil jars and votive candles. And, of course, if it all get too hard then we have the good old gift vouchers in any denomination and they are valid for 12 months. So, whatever the gardener

or non-gardener in your life is hoping for this Christmas be sure to make a trip to Gardenarium and The Pot Shop and Limestone Coast Roses and Advanced Trees and wander through the amazing array of goodies. As one of our customers said “its a lolly shop for adults, without the calories”. Open every day except Monday to 5.30pm and 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, head to our 167, Bay Road site, Mount Gambier, or check out the websites for details, www.limestonecoastroses.com. au or www.gardenarium.com.au Calum Haygarth

STATE AWARD FOR SHOREBIRDS GROUP

A local volunteer group was awarded at the State Friends of Parks Forum held in Adelaide earlier this month for their devoted work protecting local shorebirds. Friends of Shorebirds SE was nominated for four awards in total, taking home top honours in the Wildlife Protection and Recovery category for their campaign to limit the impact of beach wrack harvesting on shorebirds. NEW ATHLETICS FACILITIES UNVEILED A journey that started in 2013 finally came to fruition on Friday night when the Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Club officially unveiled its new track and equipment. Under the guidance of then president Jonathon Lillecrapp, the centre set about a fundraising campaign to replace track, that was in a state of disrepair, and to upgrade equipment. In 2013/14 it secured an Active Clubs grant of $50,000 to kickstart what loomed as a $100,000-plus redevelopment. In 2014/15 the City of Mount Gambier tipped in $24,000 and the Senior Athletics Club, one of three stakeholders in the facility, alongside the Little Athletics club and Mount Gambier High School, secured $2000 from the Lakes Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, which also went towards the project. A further $13,000 in funding, through Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell’s office ensured the track and equipment project was completed. “What a wonderful example of when a vision comes together and the money is just one aspect of putting this together,” Mr Bell said. “$50,000 from the State Government is so pleasing, especially to see it being spent on particularly our youth. Many young people are going to get the benefit of what you, the committee and volunteers have put together.” Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee was also thrilled to see the finished product. “Council recognises how important sport is for our community,” he said. “Winning and losing are both very temporary things. The most important this is how you enjoy it and going out to achieve your personal best in life.” To showcase the upgraded long jump and high jump areas, leading athletes from the Mount Gambier club strutted

their stuff – Sam Dukalskis performing a clean high jump clearance as part of the official opening ceremony and triple jumper Jacob Armitage breaking the club record with his demonstration jump before later in the evening setting another benchmark distance. The record heading into Friday’s official proceedings was 11.31m, with Jacob hitting the 11.39m mark, before he jumped 12.02m to eclipse Mount Gambier centre alumni James Dukalskis’ mark. GIANT CRICKET SURPRISE Greater Western Sydney forward Jeremy Cameron has been back in Dartmoor, visiting family & friends, and spending time fishing and shooting. He also found time to suit up for the Dartmoor Cricket Club Butchart Shield team at the weekend, “It’s a testament to Jeremy’s character,” fellow opener Don Firth said. “He loves to come back and get involved and get away from it all. It was a wonderful opportunity for the kids in the team, they’ll never forget that.” Cameron clubbed five fours and nine sixes on his way to an unbeaten 95. He also snared the first wicket of Allendale East’s innings.

BIG TARGETS PROVE TOO MUCH FOR TEAMS CHASING North Gambier is looming as a tough prospect for all opponents in 2016/17 Barber Shield action, easily defending their 199 1st innings score against East Gambier at the weekend. A seventh wicket partnership of 24 between skipper Dion Stratford and Aaron Schultz was the best the home side could muster as they crumbled to 75 all out, 124 runs shy of the Tigers’ tally. Recruit Ben Wilson top scored with 21 but the relentless line and length bowling from the North attack ensured the scoreboard ticked over very slowly and that wickets fell with monotonous regularity. North sent down 22 maidens in East’s 41 overs, including a 4.2 over spell from Matt McInerney that conceded no runs and yielded two wickets. Scott Kenny ended the match with North’s best bowling figures – 3/17 from 12 overs, that included six maidens, but it was a genuine tam effort with Nick McInerney, Matt McInerney and Michael Johnston picking up two scalps each with skipper Tim Young snaring one. North then enjoyed another stint at the crease with Nick McInerney producing another hard hitting top order knock of 33 and Jake Schutz enjoying a solid outing, unbeaten on 22. West was always going to push for an outright victory after dismissing Yahl for 57 and ending day one of play on 4/99. The Roos quickly piled on more runs before declaring at 4/153 and sending Yahl back into bat. Unbelievably, Yahl fared even worse second time round as the Hosking brothers, skipper Ryan (3/6) and younger sibling Bowen (4/12), combined for seven wickets as the brown caps were bundled out for 53. And they only passed the 50 mark courtesy of some lower order resistance from Angus Thompson, who was unbeaten on 18. At one stage, Yahl was 8/26, with 2016/17 looming as a tough season for the brown caps. The return of Nick and Harry Walters in December will help, while the loss of top order batsman Jack Gosling to university looms as another issue. South Gambier might have removed former team mate and skipper David Somerfield for only eight runs in week one of this clash but he certainly made sure he contributed for new club Penola, taking 6/23 from 11.5 overs, lifestyle1.net | 33

as South capitulated in its chase, all out for 57, 97 runs shy of their victory target. Penola skipper Jase Bateman was the other unlikely hero with the ball, taking 3/32 from 13 overs, including removing the dangerous Richard Crute (20), who in tandem with Dylan Clough (15) rescued South from 4/11 to 5/47. But the fightback was shortlived. Penola, not surprisingly looked to push for outright points, but the home side showed much better resistance. Talented opener Jacob Parham remained unbeaten on 58, combining with Dane Pople for a 50 run third wicket partnership that ate up 16 overs and despite a late afternoon collapse that saw South lose 4/23, the reigning Barber Shield champions were able to hold off the Eagles. George Kidman was the pick of the Eagles attack in the second innings, taking 4/39, including Crute and skipper Robbie Drenthen, as he threatened to really open his shoulders. Mil Lel’s 201 was always going to make for a tough run chase for Kongorong and at 2/4 it loomed an even bigger mountain to climb when Alex Hentschke strode to the crease. The star allrounder set about rescuing his team but his 59 was all but a lone hand, with Adam Maidment (19) showing some resistance as Kongorong was dismissed for 120. Mil Lel’s bowlers shared the spoils – Tom Nieuwerkerk (3/20); Jordan Neis-Beer (2/36); Alex Garlick (2/20); Luke Patching (2/18) and Josh Filder (1/6). Mil Lel opted to head back out to bat with Garlick (54), who is looming as recruit of the year, even at this early stage, spending more valuable time in the middle, while Todd Carpenter, who remained unbeaten on 22, would have enjoyed the chance to spend a solid 15 overs at the crease. BARBER SHIELD East Gambier v North Gambier North Gambier 1st innings (199) East Gambier 1st innings 75 (B. Wilson 21; T. O’Connor 11; S. Kenny 3/17; M. McInerney 2/0; M. Johnston 2/15; N. He might be an Australian go kart champion and he might have his sights set on a future career in V8 Supercars or Formula 1 but he got a taste of some serious speed on Friday. Kai Allen was gifted a hot lap at the Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb courtesy of Member for Barker Tony Pasin and so he sat alongside the best local hope Simon Feil as he set a cracking pace up the Valley Lake course. “It was really fast,” Kai said. Feil finished third in the 2015 hill climb and was hoping to keep the title in local hands in the absence of defending champion Peter Gazzard.
