COVER - EAGLEHAWK DEVELOPMENTS - YOUR ONE STOP SHOP What started out as a friendship formed through football has now become a thriving business relationship with Eaglehawk Developments. Established almost three years ago, and named after the two football clubs partners Matthew Ray and Daniel Clark have represented – the Penola Eagles and Kongorong Hawks – Eaglehawk Developments has now become a genuine one stop shop for all your building and home improvement needs. Shaun Stafford has been added to the team, bringing the total of years experience at Eaglehawk to around seventy. Shaun has added his plumbing expertise to the team and is ready and waiting for your call. Bringing Shaun on board means Eaglehawk Developments can now offer the range of plumbing services, adding to Matthew’s electrical skills and Daniel’s construction prowess. It now means one call to Eaglehawk Developments on 0427 268 286 will take care of whatever project it is you have on the go. “No job is too big or too small,” Matthew said. “We are happy to do anything and everything.” The Mount Gambier West Council Chambers (pictured on cover) is the first job the boys have done as the Eaglehawk team, also showcasing their skills in the area of heritage work. And Eaglehawk is a local team – Matthew having moved here from Melbourne 16 years ago and Daniel and Shaun basically born and bred in the local area.

TOP HONOUR FOR FORESTER WHO CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THE LIMESTONE COAST A South African born photographer, an internationally recognised music festival and an innovative educational tool were the three big winners at

last week’s Brand SA Regional Awards Limestone Coast presentation evening. From a field of 10 finalists, three got the nod – Generations in Jazz as the

Sponsor’s Choice; George the Farmer as the Mayor’s Choice and photographer Ockert Le Roux as the People’s Choice. The Brand SA Awards, which are the latest incarnation of the SA Great and Advantage SA Awards, had an overhaul of their own this year, with nominated businesses, groups and individuals featured on a website with professionally written stories by local journalists, allowing the public to vote on which story impressed them the most. The top 10 stories were featured at the presentation evening as this region’s finalists, which saw representation from right across the region. Sponsor’s Choice winner Generations in Jazz, is a multi-award winning music festival which genuinely does get bigger and better every year, bringing thousands of participants and visitors to the region each May, while the Mayor’s Choice winner George the Farmer, is another multi-award winning project that grew from Simone Kain looking to Aussie-fy farming stories available for kids and has grown from there to see George part of school curriculum and a veritable animated superstar in his own right. The People’s Choice winner, Ockert Le Roux (pictured above), is a South African born photographer, who moved to Australia, and, in turn, this region, due to his high powered career in forestry but his ability to capture the essence this region and its stunning natural features through the lens of

his camera has seen him become a household name. LIGHTS OUT BUT NOT FOR LONG It was a case of lights out last Friday night for Mount Gambier & District Baseball League, forcing the cancellation of both division one games in round two. But league president Sean Horrigan is hopeful that situation will be rectified ahead of this weekend when a part is sourced from Sydney. The league is currently undergoing a draw revision and the two cancelled games will be programmed into the new draw as seven innings matches as part of a double header weekend. The new draw will be finalised in the next month. “We are reassessing our Friday night games and are looking to make Saturdays a fuller day of action,” Horrigan said. “It makes sense cost wise and we are not getting big crowds on Friday nights so turning on the lights and having to staff the facility is not really viable. Focussing on Saturdays will also give more people the chance to watch our top grade action with more matches in the afternoon, as well as still utilising our lights on Saturdays.” RESULTS DIVISION TWO Millicent 12 d South Indians 0; Tigers 10 (S. presentation afternoon on Saturday at the Sturt Football Club. The awards are presented to individuals who have “rendered outstanding service to an affiliated league, club or the game of football”. Michael Hunt (pictured above) was unable to attend the presentation due to a clash with his daughter’s wedding but the Mundulla club stalwart, who has been a committee member for a decade, served as president for two seasons, has been club bar manager for three seasons and since 2010 has been the voice o the KNTFL on 5TCB’s Saturday Morning Show. Club president Andrew Hurtig accepted the award on Michael’s behalf. League president Michael Mourbey said volunteers like Michael were what made league’s to just survive but thrive. “To have Michael to be willing to promote our sport on radio and also to get his hands dirty at club level, keeping the Mundulla club going is fantastic and he deserves this accolade.” Maxine Milich (pictured top far right receiving her award from the MAC’s Matthew Hanton) was awarded life membership of the South Gambier Football Club in 2014 – a clear indication in what high regard the long serving committee member, secretary since 2005, and netball

club life member is held at Blue Lake Sports Park. “South Gambier football and netball clubs are so grateful for everything Maxine has given both clubs over more than thirty years,” football club president Leigh Winterfield said. “Without people with the dedication and commitment of Maxine, who willingly give their time and expertise, local sporting clubs just don’t survive. Maxine is an asset to South Gambier and we are so lucky to have her and it is well deserved that she would be recognised by the SANFL with this merit award.” Rob Dycer (pictured bottom right receiving his award from MAC’s Matthew Hanton) also has a legacy that spans more than four decades, as player, umpire and administrator. A player in the 1960s, injuries saw the dairy farmer hang up the boots and opt to umpire. He officiated in 337 games in two decades and was umpires director for six years. He then progressed to the executive as senior vice president, followed by a five year stint as president. He was awarded life membership in 2000 and returned to the fray as league investigation officer from 2009-2015. “He (Rob) has been a pretty good sounding board for mo over the years,” said current football league president Peter Mitchell, who is the man who convinced Dycer to take on the investigations officer role. “He’s been willing to listen and always pass on his advice if I’ve asked for it. He’s been a great contributor to the Mid South Eastern Football League and

football in general in the area.” Close friend Dennis Muhovics, himself a past league president, was thrilled for his mate and attended the ceremony. “Rob’s a good operator and a good bloke,” Dennis said. “It’s so important to have people like Rob involved and making sure the sport they love is always in good hands.” PRESENTATION PHOTOS COURTESY OF NAOMI MITCHELL.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE XXV... By ROBBIE TANSEL paint party that was happening. I’m 31. If I want to get covered in paint I’ll renovate my bathroom. We were then allowed in anyway as the door girl decided we were actually really old. I was however very concerned with what I saw. Ladies, where is the class? If your t-shirt is long enough to cover your shorts, and it’s a normal t-shirt, then your shorts are too short. We don’t want to see your unmentionables. And what happened to the idea of dressing to your figure? Or wearing leggings if you wear a dress that only just covers your goolies? It’s not classy for us to see your knickers when you lean forward at the bar to order your drink. Have you heard of the element of mystery? It’s always nice to leave something to the imagination of the young men observing you. I know, they don’t use their imaginations much

I continue to be inundated with emails. I thought I’d share another one with you as it means I don’t have to strain to think of an idea of my own. Here it is. “Dear Robbie, Tonight I decided to go out after 9pm. Yes, although I am 31 (9 years off 40), I thought this was a good idea as I have no children to annoy me tomorrow while I am hungover. I must say I am disappointed with what I saw and experienced. After being checked for ID (ridiculous) we then were asked to pay a $15 entry fee. This we declined as we were not participating in the exciting

these days as they can just jump on the internet and see everything. You’ve probably sent most of the people in the room a nude selfie anyway so this is you being modest. I get it. And another thing. If your makeup looks like it’s been applied by a bobcat then it’s too heavy. Makeup needs to enhance the beauty of a woman so people think, “Gee she’s really pretty” not “Arrrghhh it’s one of those clowns everyone is talking about.” Less is more. Keep it simple. Mount Gambier parents, have a chat to your daughters. Put some sort of tramp proof lock on your doors so they can’t get out looking like that. Bring back class and elegance. Help them find a nice knee length dress or some tasteful pants. Sarah from Suttontown.” I’m a bit torn on this one, Sarah. I’m a man. I know what I feel deep down inside. I like seeing scantily clad women. But there is a voice saying, “she’s right”. Young ladies of Mount Gambier. Let me tell you a story. It was Christmas Eve in 1986. My Mum and Dad’s business had been going quite well. Sales were through the roof. Apparently they were going a little too well as someone obviously tipped off the police. The next thing you know, fifteen of her majesty’s

finest were turning our house upside down looking for where the illegal substances were hidden. They didn’t find them by the way. It took them a couple more visits before they realised that Dad didn’t use the pit in his shed for looking under cars. Anyway while searching for evidence they unwrapped every present under the Christmas tree, not to mention several in cupboards that apparently were going to be brought out by “Santa” over night. This was one of the few Christmases where neither Mum or Dad were staying at the Grey Bar Motel, but Christmas was still an anti-climax. When we went to the Christmas tree in the morning, all of the Christmas presents that we had seen the previous evening were sitting under the Christmas tree unwrapped. Just in case you don’t understand the message of my story, half of the fun of receiving Christmas presents is not knowing what is inside the wrapping paper. If you already know what the gift is, you’ll move onto the next one. Likewise if you already know what is under the young lady’s clothing, the chances are you’ll move onto something that has a bit more mystery. The thrill of the chase is half the fun. What I’ve described above is the reason why I’ve never gone out with an underwear model, Playboy bunny or stripper. It’s a choice that I’ve made. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it. If you happen to be an underwear model, Playboy bunny or stripper and want to try and tempt me, do your worst by emailing me some photos at robbietansel@gmail.com Good luck!

COUP FOR BORDERTOWN GALLERY Archibald Prize winner Ben Quilty’s exhibition Inhabit will open this year in the Tatiara District, giving Limestone Coast art lovers a chance to view the

latest work of the 2011 winner. Art Gallery of South Australia Director Nick Mitzevich will open this Sunday at Bordertown’s Walkway Gallery - the

only regional art gallery in South Australia to have secured the coveted Australian artist’s Inhabit this year. Country Arts SA Arts and Community Development Officer Naomi Fallon said it was an historic moment for the Walkway Gallery. “It’s a coup for Bordertown to be the only regional centre in SA to showcase Ben Quilty’s Inhabit exhibition,” she said. “We’re thrilled to be able to present the Archibald Prize winner’s work in the Walkway Gallery. Quilty’s work is visually stunning and sends a powerful social message. It’s a privilege to exhibit his work and we are sure it will create many conversations.” Quilty’s suite of paintings, Inhabit, 2010, explores wider concepts of identity as Quilty attempts to reconcile his identity as a white Australian. Conceived as a self-portrait, Inhabit also acts as a collective national portrait and could arguably be considered a barometer of domestic sentiment as the Australian reconciliation movement progresses. Ben Quilty came to prominence to nonart lovers with his support for executed Bali Nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. The opening of the exhibition will also launch Country Arts SA’s This Is A Border(town), a 12-month artist residency program in the Tatiara district. The three artists undertaking a

LONG SERVING VOLUNTEER HONOURED

residency, Malcolm McKinnon, James Dodd and Mark De Nys, will talk about their projects and the outcomes. Visit https://thedirtsa.com.au/about-thedirt/ to view blogs about the residency and to connect with the artists. The projects’ stories will be compiled alongside writings and thoughts from Tatiara residents, national experts and the artists in a publication to be launched at the closing of the Ben Quilty exhibition on November 27.

Southern Grampians Shire Council is pleased to announce Peter Hyde from Cavendish as the 2016 Southern Grampians Shire Senior of the Year. Pete was honoured for his many years of dedicated service to not only the Cavendish community, but also to the wider region and the State. Peter is a long-serving member of a variety of different clubs and organisations within Cavendish while also holding many positions at these clubs. He has served 30 years as a charter member of the Cavendish and district lions club, has been awarded life membership of the Hamilton Harness Racing Club after giving 50 years’ service, is a current member of the Cavendish townscape association, life member of the Cavendish football club, President of the cemetery trust, President of the RSL and a long serving member of the Senior citizens club. One of his most dedicated causes, and the one for which he is best known around Cavendish is that of collector for the Royal Children Hospital, Good Friday appeal. Not only does Peter dedicate his time each year to shake a tin on the corner in town, but he doorknocks and organises raffles and hampers throughout the year. He has been acknowledged as having raising $160,000 over 30 years for the Hospital. Southern Grampians Shire Council CEO Michael Tudball who presented Peter with his award said Peter displays a positive attitude towards ageing and has an amazing sense of community spirit and selflessness. “To have raised such a significant amount of money through his own efforts towards children in need is a remarkable feat and one of which Peter should be very proud,” the CEO said. Peter was presented with his award, alongside his partner of 20 years Myrtle Dark, as part of the 2016 Seniors Festival at an event held in Cavendish last week. LOCAL SPORT OUR GIRLS SET TO BE THE PRIDE OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA SARAH ALLAN PROVING PERSEVERANCE PAYS

When Sarah Allan started playing football as a 13 year old for Hatherleigh, she never dreamed she would one day be drafted to an AFL club. “You wanted it to happen but you never thought it could,” Sarah said. “I’m glad I stuck to it. People told me to quit footy but football was my first love and I didn’t want to give it up. Other sports had established leagues and more chances but I thought what’s the point if you don’t love something.” And that defiant teenager was rewarded last Wednesday when her name was read out at the inaugural AFL Women’s Draft at pick 122 for the Adelaide Crows. The 18 year old, who is on the cusp of her 19th birthday, watched the draft streaming live online and admits once it hit 100, of the 145 players to be selected, she started to feel nervous. “There was an event in Melbourne more for the top 10 picks and the Melbourne based players,” Sarah said. “I was just at home in Adelaide and I did start to get nervous.” But eventually the talented utility, who has represented South Australia regularly since selection as a ?? year old, heard her name called

out. “It was a huge relief,” Sarah said. “I thought, thank God, for a while there I didn’t think it was going to happen.” The women’s draft did have a slightly different format to the national draft with the players nominating an Australian state as well as their interest. Given the season is only months away and running for only a couple of months, relocation was set to be problematic at best and so Sarah knew, it was the Adelaide Crows or bust. Pre-season officially starts late November with the season kicking off in February. Even that time lapse is different to male AFL draftees who normally have to pack and be ready to be at the club within 48 hours. But the bottom line is, in this fledgling competition, many of the girls have jobs or study commitments and need a little more time to uproot their lives for the opportunity of a lifetime. Crows coach Bec Goddard gave every draftee a call on Wednesday and Sarah was no exception. She already knew Goddard as she has been integral in the South Australian State program for females. As the enormity of this opportunity sinks in, Sarah knows there are two people that deserve a whole

lot of credit. “I wouldn’t even be in this position if it wasn’t for mum and dad and then encouraging me to do what I loved and driving me all over the place to do that,” Sarah said. “There had to be someone in the first place to even encourage me to kick a football.” Sarah did play basketball and netball as a teenager, in fact in 2010 she won a football and a netball premiership in the space of two hours on one day with Hatherleigh, but it was football that was always her number one priority. Sarah is just completing her first year of a Sport, Health & Physical Activity at Flinders University and she realises this AFL dream could interrupt the start to her second year. “But I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to do both,” Sarah said. Because despite the huge strides to see a competition, originally touted for 2020, brought forward to 2017, it is still not a full time gig for the girls and there will be time to attend lectures. Sarah knows many of her Crows team mates courtesy of the State program and the tall, athletic utility can’t wait for her official AFL journey to begin.

JENNA MCCORMICK THE ULTIMATE CROSS TRAINER

Women’s League. At pick 23, McCormick will be one of a handful of double code players – girls that have already made their mark, and in many, cases are still playing, at a high level in another sport as well. In McCormick’s case she will be juggling life as a W-League player for Canberra United, as well as life as a Crow. Hearing her name read out to join an AFL list was something Jenna had never really contemplated. “It never really occurred to me that there would be a league like this,” she said. “It never even entered my head.” It’s why soccer was her focus as she moved through her teenage years. “Because there was a pathway there,” Jenna said. “It’s why I leant towards soccer. It’s a bit surreal for most of the girls. It was very overwhelming and I was very excited to be drafted.” Jenna is also aware that without the cooperation between her W-League club and the Crows, she would not be able to be playing a sport she had always loved at the highest level. “It is massive to have them work together,” Jenna said. “To have both my chosen sports working together and being prepared to help a female athlete do her best in both is amazing.” Because od her Canberra United commitments,

Jenna’s involvement in pre-season will be limited but when Canberra has byes and when they are playing in Adelaide, AFL will again become the focus. “W-League will come first for me,” Jenna said. “But every chance I get I will be working with the Crows girls.” Jenna has already identified the mental shift from soccer to football looms as her biggest challenge. “I have been in the position before where I have just played 1000 soccer games and then one game of footy,” Jenna said. “Mentally it will be a bit of a challenge for me but I think I will be so excited that I won’t have to think about it as much as I have before.” Jenna knows a few of the girls in the Crows squad but after a couple of years away from South Australia, there will be plenty of new faces as well. Jenna, of course, is still coming down from her jubilant Iceland experience. Reduced hours at work combined with a chat with a couple of team mates, who put her in touch with an agent, saw Jenna seriously contemplate a foray in Europe. “The first thing that came up was the opportunity in Iceland and I had 48 hours to decide what I thought but something just felt right straight away and I decided to go,” she said. “I said let’s just do it and I couldn’t have asked for

a better ending which made it all worthwhile.” Jenna felt the constantly improving W-League is just a step ahead of the Icelandic league. “It was still challenging, still physical and still fast,” she said. “But I got my first taste of football overseas and it is something I will remember for a long time. The Iceland door will always stay open which is good. Winning the league is also really good for my resume.” Decision on another European gig are a while off yet but Jenna is seriously considering another tilt at soccer in Europe but for now she has a juggling act to perform – top grade soccer and AFL. Juggling sports is almost part of Jenna’s DNA – she has been doing it since she was really young – but the significance of her achievement is not lost on the former Adelaide United MVP. “It is quite an achievement that I’m very proud of,” Jenna said “It’s something not many people get to do and I’m grateful to be given the opportunity to do both.” It is also a chance to be back close to family after a couple of years away.

It has been a whirlwind few months for Jenna McCormick. Fresh from her first offshore professional soccer experience in Europe at an Icelandic club, where she was part of the title winning team, Jenna had barely set foot back on Aussie soil and she had been snapped up by the Adelaide Crows as part of the inaugural AFL

KEITH ALLAN (Proud father & head coach of the South East Female Football Academy) “Firstly I have to say that both girls were playing football before the academy started. But the good thing about this competition is there are girls coming through now that can see there is an opportunity This competition will create more awareness that girls can pursue football and end up in the Women’s AFL. Yesterday (last Wednesday) we put a post on our facebook page and we already had girls contacting us, wanting to play football, so it’s already creating interest. We are hoping to run the South East academy program in March and April next year and get it happening before netball gets serious. It is also better timing for encouraging girls to go out for Under 18 State selections. I’m hoping to pick up a few girls that want to do that. It will probably be a similar format to this year which was a come and play format. We will build it slowly and let it grow naturally.”

TENNIS SERVES UP A NEW LOOK OPENING ROUND The Mount Gambier District Tennis Association hit the courts for this first time for the 2016/17 season at the weekend with five teams set to contest the A1 title, courtesy of Uniting Church splitting its talent pool and joining forces with Reidy Park in a merged team to boost the numbers. A new mixed doubles competition was the other highlight of the opening round with one of the matches a lopsided affair and the other a nail biting one game victory. Numbers have also increased in ladies doubles as clubs continue to work hard to maintain a vibrant competition across four senior grades and two specialist doubles competitions. The junior competition kicks off this weekend. RESULTS A1 • Reidy Park/Uniting Church 11-87 d Mount Gambier 6-59 • Men’s singles: R. Williamson lost to A. Van Den Hurk 3-6; K. Edwards lost to H. SOME BIG HITTING IN OPENING ROUND OF CRICKET It was generally a case of the bat getting the better of the ball in the opening round of Barber Shield cricket in what was a round of one day fixtures. The Crouch Shield competition also opened with one day clashes, while the remaining grades will start their campaign this weekend. Barber Shield reigning champions South Gambier took on East Gambier in the tightest result of the day. Batting first, South’s 6/173 was built on a stunning 71 from Jacob Parham, while some late hitting from Richard Crute and Robbie Drenthen helped set the challenging target. Not to be outdone, Kyle Chapman brought his run scoring form from the 2015/16 season in Crouch Shield to the top grade action, clubbing 99 in a 133 run second wicket partnership with Tom O’Connor. Chapman hit 12 fours and cleared the boundary three times before holing out on the boundary at deep mid off, on the cusp of a century – a feat he achieved last season. West’s Jake Blackwell also picked up where he left off last season with an unbeaten 62 as part of a wonderful third wicket partnership with young gun Bowen Hosking, who was dismissed for a hard hitting 45. West passed Mil Lel’s disappointing 72 in the 23rd over and went on to compile 4/145, although cricket officials will be put to work in week one, given the match should have terminated once the Roos had passed the lowly total. Bray Stephenson did the damage with the ball taking 5/14 from eight overs, while the best of the Mil Lel bowlers being Josh Fidler, taking three of the four West wickets to fall, conceding only 12 runs from his eight overs. Penola made a shaky start, reeling at 2/13 early in its clash with Kongorong but when former South Gambier team mates David Somerfield and Kieran Ashby were reunited at the crease, after a couple of seasons in opposing camps, the Barber Shield winning team mates rescued the innings with a 82 run third wicket stand that steadied the ship. Somerfield started life as an Eagle with a half century, while a late barrage from the hard hitting Curt Evans ensuring Kongorong had a tough run chase – 146 for victory. But after a solid start, Kongorong lost 3/1 that triggered a collapse that saw them go from 3/68 to all out for 107 the final 11 overs of the clash. Somerfield

certainly earns the title recruit of the season in round one with his half century and 4/27 as Penola opened with a win. In the final match of the round, North Gambier showed no mercy to Yahl as openers Mitch Lewis (78no) and Matt McInerney (84) put on a 119 opening stand, with Lewis, in fact, carrying his bat. Nick McInerney found himself in a position he loves, coming to the crease at 2/142 with a licence to throw his bat, which he did with a hard hitting, unbeaten 49. His cameo included five fours and a six, while brother Matt cleared the boundary six times and hit six fours, as Lewis anchored the innings, rotating the strike and finding the gaps. North’s 2/238 was always going to be a tough ask for the Yahl line-up, that certainly didn’t lack experience with club stalwarts David Pick, Jon Clayton, Ian Ross and Craig Torney all part of the line-up. And it did prove a bridge too far with Yahl lasting the 40 overs but only compiling 8/109. Young gun Jack Gosling top scored with 34, with Pick at his consistent best with a hard hitting 30, while North shared the honours with the ball, with West recruit Daniel Brown, the top wicket taker with three.
