OCT 1ST – NOV 26TH

MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE and 18 year old Brooke is now in the running for the 2016 Australian Supermodel of the Year – a competition with a difference, which looks at the journey of the contestants and focuses on natural beauty, including the girls having to do their own hair and makeup as part of the competition. It hasn’t been easy but Brooke has developed confidence and self esteem and is now looking at a career in modelling. But arguably, most importantly, she wants to share her story – that anxiety and depression can be controlled, that tough times do end and that people do value you, but you first have to value yourself. The Independent Learning Centre has also played a part on Brooke’s metamorphis from troubled teen, to focussed student. She is working towards her SACE as we speak, and the modelling she has been doing is part of that. The flexibility of not just the learning options,

Brooke Holmes admits as a teenager, she felt lost and confused and really didn’t know what she wanted, right then and there, let alone in the future. Anxiety and depression adversely affected her family relationships, her performance at school and every aspect of her life and there really was no light at the end of the tunnel – or so it seemed. But all that has changed

but also the schedule, was a perfect fit for Brooke, allowing her to do shoots and other work without it impacting on her learning. Brooke started her modelling in a simple way, really, heading out to TAFE for the hair and beauty students to practice on. “Now I will be going from being a client to actually studying,” Brooke said. She is hoping to be part of the hair and beauty course next year as she builds towards setting up a modelling career. She has also done work locally for Red Ivie, including the SA Hair & Beauty Awards and that relationship has seen her build a working relationship with Luke Wehrmann, who uses Brooke regularly for his photo shoots. Brooke also has a few companies that she looks set to work for in the coming months. Earlier this year, Brooke was runner up in Miss Teen Australia, also taking out the talent section with her vocal performances. It was not only another boost to her confidence and a handy addition to the resume, but also a healing process. “Because you had to have a talent to enter Miss Teen Australia it meant I had to get back into singing, something I hadn’t done for a few years,” Brooke said. It was something she used to do with her younger sister Monique, but that relationship had suffered when Brooke was battling her anxiety and depression. “I told mum Monique should enter as well because she is such a good singer,” Brooke said. “I saw it as an opportunity for a family road trip - a chance to sing in front of dad again. I wanted to build our relationship back

MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY FACE FROM PAGE 3 The runner up finish for Brooke also saw her selected to go to Turkey for

COMING EVENTS

an international fashion event but unrest in that part of the world has seen that opportunity shelved. “To be

selected though is another boost for my confidence,” Brooke said. She was then alerted to the 2016 Australian Supermodel of the Year competition by a friend who saw it on facebook. It will see Brooke in Adelaide this Thursday looking to snare one of 12 places that will go on to compete in Bali. And this will be another learning curve for Brooke with her first time modelling in a bikini and on a catwalk. “It will certainly be a good way to see if that’s something I am comfortable doing,” she said. “If it is I will certainly have to start not just watching what I eat but working out as well.” Social media can be cruel, but also kind, and Brooke has also received some

wonderful feedback and work from her instagram account – the staple tool of any aspiring model. “I just want kids out there that are really struggling to know that it won’t always be like that,” Brooke said. “I found out who I am and now I know what I want to do and I’m setting goals – you can do it.” MODELLING SHOTS COURTESY OF LUKE WEHRMAN

A WHOLE NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS It might not be any of the time honoured tales you are used to regarding Ali Baba but there is one guarantee – it will be entertaining. Year 6 students from St Martins Lutheran College are taking

to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre this Friday night at 7pm with a performance of Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits. This hysterical show is filled with magical mayhem providing you with an Arabian

night you’ll never forget. With colourful characters, a side-splitting script, enchanting show-stopping songs and a sparkly genius genie, this musical is one for the whole family. The ancient city of Old Baghdad is in chaos. Whilst the bustling bazaar is overrun with ruthless robbers, up in the palace Sultan Pepper’s precious princess and royal ruby have vanished. To make matters worse, it seems the poor Sultan cannot trust his own vizier, Mustapha Widdle. So when Ali Baba discovers the hidden Cave of Wonders, secret hideout of Balthazar Bongo and his bumbling bandits, it’s down to him to save the day. The good news is both the St Martins Lutheran Kindergarten and Woodlands Grove Retirement Village have enjoyed a special sneak peak of the show, which was received with rave reviews. “They loved it,” Year 6 student Elijah Bond said. “They

gave a full round of applause and wanted to see more.” For further information and pricing details visit www.countryarts.org. au or phone (08)8723 8741.

MILL PROJECT TO CREATE NEW JOBS A new timber processing plant supplying product to the growing Asian market will be constructed in Portland creating 15 local jobs. A planning permit application by A2C International Trade Pty Ltd for the $6.7 million development was approved at last week’s council meeting. The permit provides for the construction of a processing plant and associated support buildings and car parking at Lot 3 Cashmore Road. The mill will produce packaging timber from small sized pine logs and forest waste. The products will be treated and packaged for export to the China market. A2C director Victor Wei said this business model was a departure from the company’s existing practice which currently focuses on the bulk export of unprocessed pine logs. Mr Wei said that future plans for the Cashmore Road site included on-site energy production from timber waste produced by the milling process.

“Product development trials will be completed within the next few weeks then closely followed by commencement of site construction work before the end of the year,” Mr Wei said. “It is anticipated full scale operations will commence in early 2017.” Mr Wei said the project would create local business and employment opportunities, with a significant proportion of the products and trades for the development to be sourced within the Portland area. The Melbourne-based developer thanked Glenelg Shire Council, Regional Development Victoria, local consultants and the aboriginal community who have worked closely with A2C during the site selection and planning application process. Glenelg Shire Council CEO Greg Burgoyne said council was pleased to support the development. “The continued growth in our local timber industry is providing for these significant value adding opportunities,” he said. “There are a number of multi-national companies currently showing interest in this region because of this booming timber industry and our strategic advantage of having access to a deep water port for export The future of this region is looking extremely positive and council is working hard to ensure continued investment is secured to allow for further job creation.”

KNITTING GENEROSITY SECURES WINDFALL FOR CANCER COUNCIL Wattle Range Council’s outdoor staff have been sporting a new look thanks to the hardworking hands of local knitter Joycelin Walker. Mrs Walker kindly picked up the needles and spent six weeks

knitting 22 beanies to complement the workwear of the Council crew. The workers, thankful for the winter warmers over the cooler months, each made a donation to the local Cancer Support

Group in appreciation of Mrs Walker’s efforts. Karla Werchon, of the Millicent Cancer Support Group, recently attended the Cancer Council to receive a cheque for $200, the proceeds of the fundraising initiative. The cheque was presented by Parks and Gardens crew member Tony Walker in the presence of his mother Joycelin, council chief executive Ben Gower and deputy chief executive Paul Duka. “We have all been touched by cancer in some way and it is wonderful to support such a worthy local charity,” Mr Gower said. “Thanks must go to Mrs Walker, she has spent many hours knitting the hats and was overwhelmed with the support as the orders just kept coming. The staff all look great in their council beanies.”

GRANT HIGH CELEBRATES NATIONAL LITERACY WEEK The English faculty at Grant High School proudly participated in National Literacy Week at the beginning of this month. This event encouraged students to value not only reading, but all forms of communications. Activities included poetry slam, viewing the film Oddball, scavenger hunt, jellybean and writing competitions and a drama workshop. Staff and students also got into the spirit of the occasion by attending school dressed as their favourite literary character.

STEP BACK IN TIME • GETTING MARRIED IN THE 1990S • KATINA STRIGLOGIANNIS & ADAM SIMS

IT WAS ALL ABOUT FAMILY & TRADITION What started as a chance introduction by a mutual friend ended in a version of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and 17 years later, happily ever after is still the plan for Adam and Katina Sims. “I think I knew when I first met him that we would end up together,” Katina said. And they did, Adam proposing on a weekend getaway to Lorne, in August 1998. “He took me to dinner and that’s where he asked me to marry him,” Katina said. “It was all a bit of a blur because I was really shocked but then also conscious that there were all these people watching. He had gone and asked my dad before we left and he had a ring so he was all organised but I had no idea.” By the time the newly engaged couple returned home to Mount Gambier, news had spread like wildfire among the two large families, and a soiree had already been organised. “Within about two weeks I had the whole wedding planned,” Katina said. Local dressmaker Judy Johnson made the bridal gown and the bridesmaids dresses and Katina was able to source everything she wanted locally for a wedding that was always going to be big when the shearer, with one of the largest families in the region, exchanged vows with the Greek hairdresser. Katina’s Greek heritage also meant two wedding ceremonies. “It must have been the longest service ever for everyone,” Katina said. But it was important to the couple that they share a Greek Orthodox ceremony and a Catholic one. “It was pretty important to my parents, too, and I am Greek Orthodox and the whole day included Greek traditions,” she said. The two ceremonies were conducted at St Paul’s Catholic Church, in Mount Gambier, followed by a reception at The Barn, where Greek culture and Aussie traditions collided in a night the 300 guests will never forget. “Adam’s family was really great about embracing all the Greek culture and traditions,” Katina said. To the point, that they all congregated at the Hellenic Hall a couple of days before the wedding for a quick lesson of Greek dancing. “I think Chris and Mary, my auntie and uncle taught everyone,” she said. And that wasn’t the only crucial role Chris and Mary played at the wedding. The duo was also the koumbaro and koumbara at the Greek orthodox ceremony – a traditional witness or sponsor type role equated to our maid of honour and best man but often a role given to mentors in the couple’s life rather than close friends. The crown ceremony was also part of Katina and Adam’s celebrations, symbolising the joining of the two lives and doubling as a blessing for the union. Originally, the newlyweds wore the crowns for a week, and then there was an official ceremony to remove them, but in recent times, the crown ceremony is confined to the church service.

The Greek traditions continued at the reception with sugared almond bomboniere – the guest gift being more about the symbolism, with the almonds representing health, wealth, happiness, prosperity and long life. And the couple was leaving nothing to chance with goldfish on every table, as well, another tradition dating back to ancient Greece. “They believe it enhances the good luck in your marriage,” Katina said. But arguably the most popular of the Greek traditions was the dancing at the reception. “Everyone loved the Greek dancing and it was so much fun,” Katina said. “It looked a lot like My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” cont. page 27. STEP BACK IN TIME • GETTING MARRIED IN THE 1990S • KATINA STRIGLOGIANNIS & ADAM SIMS

IT WAS ALL ABOUT FAMILY & TRADITION

HERE COMES THE PAPERWORK If you change your surname get ready for the paperwork - you’ll need to change your name officially on a number of critical documents. • Driver’s licence • Vehicle registration • Electoral roll • Passport •Bank records – account names, credit card • Any property titles • Your employer’s records • Medical records • Insurance policies and other financial records like superannuation accounts and health insurance. • Your will • Membership cards for places like the gym, video shop, frequent flyer clubs and other store cards.

FROM PAGE 25 With family such a strong focus of the wedding it was no surprise that her bridal party was her own sisters, Melena, Aleathia and Louise, as well as Adam’s two siblings – Emma and Sally. Adam was attended by Jamie Pearson, Andrew Sims, Matthew Gazzard and Hugh Dixon. Katina remembers it as an emotional day, starting with more Greek tradition – getting ready at home surrounded by family. “The whole family comes to the house when you are getting ready and it’s a real party atmosphere with music and food,” she said. “Once we pulled up at the church, it did all start to hit me and dad squeezed my hand and I basically told him not to say anything, I knew I was about to cry.” Leaving the reception was also tough. “I was a traditional bride in the sense that the night I left my wedding was the night I left home and that was sad but exciting as well,” she said. The couple could also be classed as ahead of their time as they learned a wedding dance, a trend that was only just emerging 17 years ago. The song was Trisha Yearwood’s How Do I Live from the 1997 movie Con Air. “It was out first movie date,” Katina said. “Adam chose it, he chose all the music for the day.” Adam and Katina now have three beautiful children, Ellyana, Chanelle and Addison and last year enjoyed a family trip to Greece for Adam and the kids to see firsthand the Greek culture that has helped shape their lives.

BRADEN RICHARDSON & TESSA GILBERTSON Tessa Gilbertson knew from the minute she met Braden Richardson that she would end up marrying him and after seven years together, Braden popped the question. He was able to take Tessa by surprise by choosing Christmas Day last year. ““Braden isn’t the biggest fan of Christmas, he’s a bit of a Grinch,” she said. So when he wanted her out of bed early to open a gift before family arrived for breakfast and after some coercing she did. Standing by the Christmas tree with her eyes closed, Tessa assumed she was in for a large gift. “A ring was the last thing on my mind,” she said. “So as I opened my eyes I was in complete shock. There was the love of my life, down on one knee with the most amazing ring shining at me.”Seeing no reason to wait, the couple was only engaged three and a half months before walking down the aisle and exchanging vows on April 9 this year at a ceremony at Sherriffmuir Gardens. “We were so lucky that the day was so perfect and it was all that we had dreamed of and more.” BRIDAL PARTY Laura Earl - Maid of Honour Samantha Gifford - Bridesmaid Jaqueline Zaccardo - Bridesmaid Mark Govan - Best Man Andrew Dihm - Groomsman Luke Blaseka - Groomsman Photos courtesy of Sonya Francis

LYNDON SMITH & JEMMA WATSON It was all about sharing a relaxed day with family and friends and that’s exactly how the Southend wedding of Lyndon Smith and Jemma Watson panned out. “It perfectly suited Lyndon and I,” Jemma said. “To be honest, I didn’t wear shoes for the whole day.” Guests danced the night away to the acoustic stylings of Jarred Kilsby in a marquee on the grassed area next to the Southend Community Club. MAKEUP ARTIST

UFS Chemist Bec Coutts • Beauty Therapist What do you enjoy about being part of someone’s special day? I love being able to make someone feel even more beautiful and it’s so much fun helping people get ready. Everyone is so happy and excited and it’s such a great moment to be a part of. The best advice you could give a bride? Take every moment in and enjoy it because the day is over before you know it. Your most romantic recollection? Well I’m still waiting for a ring (haha) but the most recent romantic thing my partner Scott has done for me was on my last Birthday I went for a walk in the morning and came home to a candlelit breakfast of blueberry pancakes and a beautiful bunch of flowers.

WEDDING TRANSPORT Jupiters Limousines Jason Milich • Owner

What do you enjoy about being part of someone’s special day? I enjoy being able to help make their day a bit less stressful, from the pickup prior the ceremony to the travels around for the photo shoot. It is one of the biggest milestones in their lives and I take pleasure in doing what I can to make it a more memorable occasion The best advice you could give a bride? STRESS LESS!! There is nothing you can change on the day, so sit back, relax and enjoy yourself with your new Husband, and the most important people around you. Your most romantic recollection? I think one of the most romantic recollections would be an intimate wedding I did with just the Bride, Groom and a small group of close family, it seemed the day was more special than having a large group of guests and the Bride and Groom seemed more relaxed and more focused on each other rather than everyone else.

RECEPTION VENUE Linksview Bar & Bistro • Bill Burley • Owner

What do you enjoy about being part of someone’s special day? We enjoy making sure everything we do is exactly how the couple planned their function to be. It’s important that we make their day as stress free as possible and by doing that we make sure that we deliver by giving them a night to remember! The best advice you could give a bride? To be organised and don’t be afraid to delegate a few jobs to the people you can trust. If you book your special day well in advance you will give yourself plenty of time to be ready and everything you wish should be available on the day eg. Place of ceremony, the celebrant you want, the venue you wish to hire and all the extra’s you require. Your most romantic recollection? Once had a groom carry his bride from the front door of the reception to the bridal table.

WEDDING CELELBRANT Ruth Cameron

What do you enjoy about being part of someone’s special day? It is an honour to be a part of a couple’s special wedding day. My role begins in the early planning stages with necessary legal documentation and providing networks for venues, photographers, decorations, flowers, etc. A relationship is formed with the couple at this exciting time of their lives. Along with the planning, the rehearsal and ceremony provide memories for us that last many years into the future. The best advice you could give a bride and groom? In your planning, all aspects of your special day are important to you and your guests, but without a Celebrant you cannot be officially married. Put the Celebrant at the top of your ‘to do’ list. Your most romantic recollection? Every marriage that I have performed has been unique and personal. However, I never tire of seeing the look of love, wonder and amazement (often with tears) on a groom’s face as he sees his bride walk towards him down the aisle….

JAMES LEHMANN & STACEY PASCOE Romance doesn’t always start with flowers and candlelit dinners, sometimes it has a real bovine flavour and that’s the case for Stacey Pascoe and James Lehmann. The couple met six years ago when they were both leading steers at the Royal Adelaide Show and cows were also a part of the proposal with James choosing the sunset as a backdrop to popping the question. The happy couple was out checking the cows when he took advantage of the picture perfect setting and asked Stacey to be his wife. “He still made me open every gate on the way out though,” Stacey laughed. James and Stacey exchanged vows on April 16 at Woolmit Station, at Mount Benson. LYNDON MERCADER & DENISE BARKER Eight years after meeting while Denise was on a family holiday, Lyndon Mercader and Denise Barker tied the knot. The wedding was held in Cebu City, in the Phillipines, on June 24, with a ceremony at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral followed by a reception for 120 guests at the Mandarin Plaza Hotel. The proposal came almost two years ago when Lyndon chose to call Denise early one September morning. “Caller ID showed it was Lyndon and he was right beside me, Denise said. She turned, he was smiling and she was just annoyed, so she turned back over and tried to go back to sleep. The phone rang again and a frustrated Denise turned and asked Lyndon what he wanted, only to be confronted by a ring and a proposal. Denise is the daughter of Tom & Maria Morello and Lyndon is the son of Arlene & Francisco Mercader. WEDDING CHECKLIST What happens after you’ve agreed to officially tie the knot… This is a special time in your life when lasting memories are made and you want them to be about planning and then enjoying a wonderful celebration of your love with family and friends. Whether it’s for 300 or 30, whether it rivals the royal wedding or whether it’s a backyard barbeque, whether you just decided to make it official one morning over breakfast or whether it was the grandest, most romantic proposal of all time, the planning still needs to meticulous. Paying attention to details in the lead up makes for a relaxing day when your wedding day finally arrives and if you have a clear picture in your mind as to what you want try and share the load with close, trusted friends and family so that you’re not too exhausted to enjoy the day when it rolls around. Be sure about what costs are involved and the most important advice is keep a paperwork trail – it can eliminate confusion about what’s been promised and just how much it’s going to cost.

David Somerfield & Chloe Irvine (2013)

PHOTO COURTESY OF ADRIAN GALE - THE CHAPEL STUDIO

After you’ve said “yes”… If the proposal came with a ring then make sure it’s insured… If you’re picking out the ring together after set the ground rules early on budget and do your research… Decide if you’re going to have an engagement party and set a date. Planning an engagement party is a nice rehearsal for your event management skills… Set a date – factor in what time of the year you’d like to be married, how long you’ll need to save and plan, any special events you’d like to avoid and a realistic time to be away from work and able to take time off in the lead up and aftermath for a honeymoon… ASAP you need to sit down together and work out an acceptable and REALISTIC budget – this might mean putting in place a savings schedule to make sure you easily cover the anticipated costs as well as hopefully having some money set aside for those unexpected costs that could crop up as the wedding draws closer… You also need to establish just who is paying for what and what financial involvement the parents were considering so you know exactly where every cent is coming from...Get the money chat out of the way early – it can be awkward but you don’t want to be haggling in the lead up to the big day…

Map out the big picture and start locking in the crucial elements for the day… Decide on just what kind of wedding and reception you want and how many guests you want to include… Locking in a reception venue as early as possible is critical. Try and organise a face to face consultation with a selection of different venues and caterers and ask plenty of questions so you know exactly what they’re offering is exactly what it’s going to cost. Decide on a civil or religious ceremony and a venue for the ceremony and book… Start getting paperwork together for all the legal requirements of marriage and check with your celebrant or priest just what you need to provide… Select your wedding party TOGETHER and then approach them about being involved… You’ll need to start deciding on dresses and suits and by association a colour scheme for the big day – while the guys will probably be easy fixed, you need to be realistic about settling on a colour and style of dress for your bridesmaids, giving you plenty of time for fittings and choice of accessories…This is even more critical if all your bridal party is not located where you live during the planning stages. If you have a preferred hair stylist and make-up artist for your wedding day then check out their availability as soon as possible and at least temporarily book their services… Start investigating photographers and/or videographers and lock your preferred option in… If you have a lot of guests coming from away or are planning a destination wedding, you’ll need to organise Save The Date notification and even check out potential special deals for guests at a particular accommodation facility… Start contemplating honeymoon destinations, factoring in budget, time you’ll be able to get off work and a location you’ll both enjoy given the time of the year you’ll be travelling. Once again research is the key to getting the best deal… You don’t have to rush out and buy every bridal magazine on the shelves but keep your eye out for different ideas and keep an ideas folder…

Six months and counting… With most of the big picture elements to the wedding already locked in it’s time to start sweating the finer details of the day… Book a florist – once again some face to face consultations with a selection of florists and looking at examples of their previous work should help with the final decision….

Confirm your hair stylist and make up artist and book in any pre-wedding appointments like a tan, facial or manicure as well…You also might like to check if guests from away or close friends would like to use the same stylists and make sure they’re catered for as well… In a way it’s probably the biggest (and most discussed) decision the bride makes and you have to make it NOW – the dress. Whether you’re ordering it, getting it handmade or lucky enough to find one off the rack that fits, you need to tick this job off the to-do list NOW Plan a girls weekend when you can try on dresses and shoes and get those outfits locked in as well… Reconfirm ALL your reception details… Select and approach an MC for the reception… Time to book in the cars or make whatever transport arrangements you’re going to need.. Decide on any entertainment for the reception and book it in… If you’ve decided to have a gift registry you’ll need to select a location/s and start compiling a wishlist… Book your honeymoon and make sure you organise any visas or passports that might be needed… Confirm your photographer/videographer booking details…

Tick, tock, tick tock – three months to go Plan your vows… If you have to or want to have pre-wedding counselling then now is the time… If you’ve planned an outdoor ceremony then make sure you have an alternate venue in the case of poor weather… Lock in the bridesmaids dresses, including shoes and accessories… Lock in the boys’ suits, including shoes, shirts and ties… Make sure your mother’s on track with her outfit and your dad’s not just dusting off a suit from the 90s… Order the rings.. Order cake…. Finalise the guest list and send out the invitations (and any relevant gift registry information)… If you’re putting together any reception decoration, placecards or bomboniere yourself it’s time to start those projects… Book wedding night accommodation and decide if you’re going to have any day after functions with family and/or friends, especially if people have travelled a long way and you’re not leaving on your honeymoon immediately…

Don’t turn Bridezilla but there is only six weeks to go… Lock in all the “extras” for your weddings – people doing readings, ushers, musician.. File your Notice of Intended Marriage (needs to be done one month and one day before your wedding)… Confirm all details with reception venue including guest numbers, menu, beverages and seating plan, if required… Final fittings – that means EVERYONE… Get your engagement ring cleaned so it’s looking its best on the big day… Confirm all details with florist... Confirm all details with photographer and/or videographer… Hair and make-up trials… Make sure your home insurance will cover the arrival of the gifts… Make sure you have everything that you need to provide for reception like placecards, centerpieces…

The final countdown – last week of your single life Wedding rehearsal… Confirm order of service and print booklets if required... Pick up rings… Finalise wedding party gifts… Confirm florist and cake delivery details… Re-confirm any entertainment… Pack for wedding night and honeymoon…

The bottom line is enjoy not only the day but everything in the lead up to it. It won’t be stress-free – nothing important ever is. Stick to your budget and your to-do list and planning the day can still be relatively relaxing. Allow others (that you trust) to help – you don’t have to be a one man event coordination machine.
