OPPERMAN WINS 80TH 100 MILE CLASSIC For the first time in a decade a local rider has taken out the 100 Mile Classic - the most prestigious event being the marquee event run by the Mount Gambier Cycling Club. Matthew Opperman, who was tackling the gruelling event for the 18th time, crossed the Bay Road finish line first, after being part of the 35minute group, which also included young Mount Gambier hopeful, Jack Patzel, who was also the youngest rider in the field at 15 years of age.

Opperman is the first local to cross the finish line first in a decade, when Kieren Bannon was crowned 100 Mile champion in 2006. Opperman is now the 15th rider representing the host club to take the title.

It was in 1933 that the race was first held and race organiser Alex Roberts now lends his name to the iconic road race.

A legend in Mount Gambier cycling, Mr Roberts died in 2009 at the age of 104 but his family has continued to be part of the official proceedings, presenting the

winner with the champion’s sash.

And wearing that winner’s sash had been a dream of Opperman’s since cycling became his passion in 1998 - he has not missed a 100 Mile since, finishing second in 2000 and also has a fourth placing to his credit.

Opperman’s preparation over the past month certainly suggested the 43 year old was in good form. He went to an event in Berri a month ago and finished second and then backed that up with a fourth placing at a Port Fairy event on the June Long Weekend. “I was feeling good,” Opperman said, “Having those races as preparation was really important.”

Breaking away with fellow local rider Scott Waters, Opperman made his move at the Bellum Hotel, the same place he made his move in 200 when he finished second. “When we realised we had got a break on the rest of the field we decided to just go for it and see what we could do,” Opperman said. And in the end Opperman just outlasted Waters, giving the locals a rare onetwo finish in the 100 Mile race. Patzel also impressed, finishing fourth in his first ever attempt at the tough road race.

The weather in the lead up was not ideal for training with Opperman concentrating on Ergo training while also getting out on the bike when weather permitted.

HUGE OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL SUCCESS STORY Mount Gambier’s Beachport Liquid Minerals (BLM) is one of 10 Australian small-to-medium sized businesses identified to take part in an intensive nine-month program that provides executives with skills to help accelerate company growth and compete in a global marketplace.

Run in partnership with the University of South Australia’s Centre for Business Growth and facilitated by a business professor and nine national and international growth experts, the ANZ Business Growth program has been successful in developing sustainable scale in Australian small-to-medium sized businesses.

BLM, led by Kym Sutherland, is a locally owned family operation producing livestock supplements sold throughout Australia with future plans to export internationally. BLM has seen extensive growth over the past four years and has invested heavily in bringing to market a safe, simple and cost effective livestock supplement system.

ANZ Regional Executive for South East South Australia Darren Wilson said based in Mountt Gambier, Beachport Liquid Minerals was an innovative and thriving local enterprise.

“We’re pleased to be supporting it to take the next significant step to focus on its future growth,” Mr Wilson said. “Given the strong growth and demand BLM is already experiencing, we’re confident the ANZ Business Growth Program will give Kym and his executive team the right insights and framework required to scale their businesses sustainably.”

Kym Sutherland, owner of BLM, said he was excited to participate in the program.

About the ANZ Business Growth Program

The ANZ Business Growth program is open to executive teams of ANZ business customers with between 5 and 200 employees and more than $5 million in annual sales. It was developed by Professor Jana Matthews, ANZ Chair in Business Growth, Director of the Centre of Business Growth at University of South Australia.

The companies who participated in 2015 have since achieved an aggregate 24 per cent increase in revenue, taking earnings from $132m to $164m, and created 114 new jobs in total. 40 per cent of participants are now selling their products and services in nine new countries, with 30 per cent of businesses opening offices in new countries.

Speaking about the program, facilitator Dr Jana Matthews said they believed each of the companies had high growth potential. “Many SMEs begin as family businesses with close links to employees and the community, so it is important for CEOs to be catalysts for change and be strategic innovators,” she said. “95 per cent of the executives we’ve worked with say they now understand their company’s growth issues and what they need to do to lead, manage and accelerate growth.

The ANZ Business Growth Program is a series of three, three-day modules for CEOs or MDs and two other members of the executive team. In addition to the nine-month program, 45 ANZ customers will be selected to attend a one-day clinic with Prof Matthews.

Based upon the Knowledge Framework for Growth developed and used by Prof Matthews in the USA and NZ, the program is delivered by Prof Matthews and nine national and international Growth Experts. Held in major capital cities, the program is aimed at CEOs and executive teams of companies with $5M to $50M in revenue and between 5 and 200 employees. Along with resources such as its Small Business Hub and $2 billion lending pledge for small businesses, the ANZ Business Growth Program embodies ANZ’s commitment as the bank that backs business.

STREETON EXHIBITION COMES TO HAMILTON FACELIFT FOR PORTLAND CBD From July 15, Hamilton Gallery will present Streeton – Australia Felix, A Grampians selection a small suite of paintings by Arthur Streeton all depicting the Grampians landscape. Sir Arthur Ernest Streeton (1867-1943) is one of Australia’s most notable painters, a central figure in the Heidelberg school of artists, and these are all works he painted in the Western District around the 1920s.

Streeton rose to fame at that time alongside fellow Australian impressionist painters Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts and Charles Conder. “These are very significant paintings in the nation’s holdings of Australian art and Hamilton Gallery is both fortunate and deserving of displaying these pictures” said director Sarah Schmidt. These works reflect what we see now through iconic Grampians images, although they were painted in the 1920s she added.”

Hamilton Gallery has brought together works from both private and public collections, including from the National Gallery of Australia, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The exhibition will christen the recently refurbished Gaussen Gallery.

The selection of paintings depicting the Grampians landscape, extends the success of the Geelong Gallery exhibition ‘Land of the Golden Fleece: Arthur Streeton in the Western District’ curated by Geoffrey Edwards. Sarah Schmidt described Geelong Gallery’s exhibition as “a very important exhibition that Hamilton Gallery has been fortunate to follow, with an edited selection focused on localised scenes, we

are extremely grateful to the collegiality of our National Gallery in Canberra and our regional counterpart Geelong Gallery, for supporting our exhibition with loan of important paintings from their collections.”

The exhibition will include one of Streeton’s most celebrated works, Land of the Golden Fleece, painted in 1926 near Willaura. In recorded letters from the time, Streeton enthusiastically wrote, “I am away here painting among the sheep and the red gums, with the grand mass of the Grampians towering up behind”. “The exhibition is presented alongside another of Hamilton Gallery’s major exhibitions for the 2016 Program, ‘John Wolseley: Mallee – Maquis – Desert – Rainforest’ to achieve an entire floor of remarkable landscape imagery which is rather befitting of a regional gallery located in such a remarkable and beautiful landscape rich with geographic points of interest - both of which these two exhibitions capture in very different ways.”

‘Streeton – Australia Felix, A Grampians selection’ will be on display from the 15 July – 9 October. An official function will be held on Thursday, July 21, at 6pm. Entry to both the exhibition and official function is free. All are welcome to the function by RSVP to the Gallery by July 14.

A lifestyle change so easy to make

Portland’s CBD is being given a floral makeover thanks to the Glenelg Shire Council’s parks and gardens team.

Staff have this week planted more than 250 ground cover roses at the intersection of Julia and Bentinck Streets, replacing tired shrubbery which restricted visibility for low vehicles.

Glenelg Shire parks and gardens team leader Bill Buck said almost all garden beds in the CBD had now been replanted with modern, drought tolerant varieties.

“Our parks and gardens team have been working tirelessly over recent months replacing rosemary, diosma and hebes which previously lined the garden beds,” he said.

“These replanted flower beds are receiving plenty of positive feedback from locals, and visitors alike, who are impressed with the facelift it is providing our historic streets.

“This latest planting at Julia Street includes a locally purchased Treloar Roses variety called Island Fire – a stunning velvety red flower with yellow stamens which is long flowering and a proven performer which will cope with Portland’s varying weather conditions.”

Treloar Roses director Gary Matuschka said he was grateful Glenelg Shire was showcasing locally grown plant varieties in its garden displays.

“We have had a long association with the Glenelg Shire, supplying roses for the botanic display at the gardens to these various garden beds across the CBD,” he said.

“It is great to see our council purchasing

local product and supporting local businesses and jobs.”

Mr Buck said council’s new streetsweeper, which is visiting various localities across the shire, was further ensuring the streets were always looking at their best.

He said staff had continued their hard work, improving the Gilbert Pritchard garden at the Ploughed Field, opposite the Portland Hospital.

“This garden has also been given a new look, with new plants and the removal of a hedge which blocked visibility at the site. This is providing another great spot for people to sit back and enjoy our great harbour views,” he said.

NURSING CENTRE FUNDRAISER GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH The biennial Harrow Bush Nursing Centre Black Tie Ball has once again been an outstanding success with around 180 people descending on Harrow on June 11th for a fun filled night of dancing, auctions and catching up with old friends.

The gala fundraising event for Harrow’s primary health care service was first held in 2012 and has been a highly anticipated event ever since, now attracting patrons from as far away as Melbourne.

Harrow Bush Nursing Centre Manager, Ann Vaughan said the event was very important in raising vital funds for the service. “We were pleased to have around 200 people attend and the money raised goes towards the ongoing programs and services provided to Harrow and district,” Mrs Vaughan said, “And we have a whole lot of fun at the same time.”

The entertainment is always a hit, with live music from popular Adelaide band, The Brian’s, and the added bonus of bus services to and from the ball from Hamilton, Balmoral and Wombelano, making this event a very enjoyable evening.

Organisers have extended a huge thank you for the support from various organisations and individuals including The Brians, Ron Penrose, Katrina Lodge, Baimbridge Antiques, Tosca Browns Hamilton, Only About Children, D & G Cameron, TAC, Bonnie & Cydes Horsham, Tussock Jumpers, Pirramimma Wines, John Weire and Tiffany Treloar. GRANT BUDGET ADOPTED The District Council of Grant’s 2016-17 budget was adopted earlier this month with a continued focus on renewal and replacement of council’s $190M asset base.

District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage said that council was conscious of the impact of the current financial climate on the general public as well as the need to maintain services to the community. On average rates will go up by 3.7% which will result in the average ratepayer paying an extra 57c per week. $1.58 million has been allocated for new assets, including $308,000 for the completion of the sealing of Picanninnie Ponds Road with 50% coming from grant funding. $339,000 has been allocated for kerbing and channelling town streets and $289,000 for upgrades to Community Wastewater Management Systems.

Other major new initiatives proposed include $214,000 for implementation of some of the projects listed in the Port MacDonnell and River and Coastal Masterplans, including $120,000 for the upgrade of Donovans Landing.

The Budget also will see all existing services and service standards maintained including all regulatory, economic, development and community services.

Wattle Range Council has recognised that there are a number of groups or organisations in the Penola, Coonawarra, Kalangadoo, Nangwarry, Glencoe and Furner communities that just can’t find the right volunteers.

Believe it or not they are out there…

There are a number of people, of all ages and backgrounds, just itching to help out in their community, they just need to find the right spot for them.

This is the idea behind council’s new Volunteer Matching Initiative – council, is matching those eager helpers with the perfect role in their community.

Local community and sporting groups or organisations are invited to register their positions vacant with Wattle Range Council on their website at www.wattlerange. sa.gov.au by Wednesday, August 10.

Registrations are only available online and groups or organisations requiring assistance to complete the form are invited to call in to the Penola Library and ask one of the friendly staff for assistance.

Volunteer positions will then be promoted at the launch of the Initiative to be held in the Gallery at the John Riddoch Centre, Penola Visitor Information Centre at 27 Arthur Street, Penola on the evening

An eagle skull, snake skin, bush tucker and bugs for biological control were just some of the displays investigating the five senses in nature and their connection to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at the STEM Community Fun Day. Natural Resources South East offered a range of activities on the day connecting nature and the senses, from mystery boxes filled with natural materials to touch and bush tucker to taste, to the challenge of hearing bird calls and matching them to their callers. A display of natural treasures including an eagle skull and snake skin proved to be a hit. Families were able to see and learn about the leafhopper bug, a biological control that was released by CSIRO scientists to control the invasive bridal creeper weed.

Natural Resources management officer Aidan Laslett said it was encouraging to see kids taking an interest in the environment.

“What really impresses me is how much these kids already knew,” Mr Laslett said.

“It was a great surprise to learn a thing or two from an unexpected source. A four year old girl telling me all about the extinct marsupial lion and other Megafauna found at the Naracoorte Caves was remarkable.”

Natural Resources South East staff also delivered a workshop to local educators during the STEM summit a day prior, with a focus on using outdoors for learning.

Staff discussed how features of our local, unique Ramsar listed wetland system can be incorporated into STEM learning. Topics included indigenous plant use, water testing, water management, native fish

“The possibilities are endless,” Mr Gower said. “Opportunities range from mowing the local sporting oval to teaching local children to read or helping out the church group with their newsletter. Community groups are always seeking assistance and every little bit helps. It is a great idea to help the groups and the volunteers find each other.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - OUR FAMILY IS ALWAYS FEUDING... By ROBBIE TANSEL I know that most of you already know, but I’m kind of a big deal with the media. I already have my mega successful weekly Lifestyle1 column which is called Collected Stupidity for a reason I still don’t quite understand. I’ve recently published my first book Village Idiot of the Year, available exclusively at Collins Booksellers and online at www.yourbooksonline. com.au As if that isn’t all enough, I was recently featured on television along with several other members of the Tansel clan.

As you may have already guessed, we were on Family Feud. I have to admit I haven’t ever watched the program. When my Auntie Shana (who used to be my Uncle Shane) invited us to be on Family Feud I was under the impression that it was some sort of show where we all come on and argue with

each other. My first thought was, “So we’ll do it on December the 25th as usual and have a special bonus feud as well. Count me in.”

I thought we’d all have an argument and then there’d be some sort of cranky old lady who’d tell us who was right, a bit like Judge Judy. Imagine my surprise when instead of a cranky old lady I was confronted with an oompa loompa with ADHD. You’ll just have to picture the look of disappointment on my face when I found out I was meant to work together with my family. As well as Auntie Shana, my Dad (not currently in jail) and my Mum (not currently in jail due to a court system that insists on letting criminals out when they should remain behind bars) were also part of the team.

You’ll be surprised to know that things didn’t go well. Someone really should have explained the basic premise of the program to me before the first question. I didn’t understand that I was trying to guess what other people might have thought about a question. I just thought it was like Sale of the Century and there was one correct answer.

This obviously led to quite a heated argument between me and Grant Denyer. He asked, “Where would you clean your lawnmower?” Having only done this on the weekend it was easy for me to respond, “Bathroom.”

When he told me that my answer was wrong, I flipped out a little.

“How would you know where I wash my lawnmower?” I yelled. “It was a survey of

a hundred people,” he responded.

“I wash my lawnmower in the bathroom so that if it catches fire I have running water on hand.” I interrupted.

“Why are you surveying people about where I wash my lawnmower anyway? I knew the government was watching me.

Get back to the chocolate factory with Mr Wonka.”

None of this helped in any way. We ended with zero points for the round after Dad answered with, “In the prison yard?” and Mum with, “In your cell?” Their knowledge of life outside the grey bar motel is limited.

Things didn’t improve in the second round. The question this time was, “What do you do on a first date?”

PILOT PROGRAM SUPPORT GROUP SET UP Portland District Health has established a pilot program to set up a family support group for people who have substance abuse issues.

The support group will be for carers, families, partners and friends who have others in their lives with substance abuse issues.

While this concept is new to Portland, there are many established family support groups throughout rural Victoria. Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) project officer Wendy Howe said the family support group’s main aim is to provide a safe, accessible environment where members can share information and ideas. Ms Howe will attend each session and can arrange for guest speakers as identified by group members.

Training will also be available to families, carers and friends through the family drug help course which is designed to provide families with valuable information about the AOD service system and treatment planning. This course will be held for two hours over six weeks and will be facilitated by the Family Drug & Help Organisation. A minimum of 10 people in attendance is required for it to go ahead. “This is a great opportunity for Portland to learn more about AOD services and have a chance to support our community,” Ms Howe said. DUNN FAMILY REUNION - CELEBRATING NINE GENERATIONS A Dunn family reunion was held at Glencoe over the June long weekend. More than 130 relatives came together from Western Victoria, Brisbane, Wollongong, Geelong, Whyalla, and Adelaide to join local families. The youngest Dunns, 6 week old twins Matilda and Harrison, travelled from Griffith, NSW, with their parents and four siblings to meet their extended family for the first time.

Krystal Dunn and Heather Reilly organised the event, which had five generations represented out of the nine, since William and Elizabeth Dunn landed in Australia. The party also celebrated Grahame Dunn’s 80th birthday and his granddaughter, Nikita Dunn’s 21st birthday.

The Friends of the Mount Gambier Library will be hosting their annual Big Book Sale this Saturday between 10am until 2pm. It’s a chance to grab a bargain, with thousands of books, some new, some old, of all genres, for both adults and children, as well as plenty of CDs, jigsaws, DVDs, games and magazines.

The Friends of the Library Committee have been busy sourcing an array of materials to prepare for sale and are also calling out to the public to clear out their cupboards and spare rooms that are housing their unwanted books and drop them down to the library for donation prior to the weekend. Library manager Vicki Hutchinson said the annual Big Book Sale was one of Friends of the Library’s major fundraising events and all proceeds benefit

SCIENCE HONOUR FOR NARACOORTE STUDENTS Naracoorte High School Year 12 students Abby Walker and Renae Brody are two of only 50 students across Australia and New Zealand selected to attend the six day Youth ANZAAS (The Australian & New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science) Residential International Forum to be held in Brisbane in July.

The two girls are the only students from the Limestone Coast region who have been selected for this once in a lifetime experience.

Youth ANZAAS 2016 is organised by ANZAAS and the Royal Society of New Zealand. The association holds this annual conference to give students a broad perspective on the aims and practice of scientific endeavour, ranging from satisfying curiosity and the drive to discover, to the application of science in the real world. It provides the students with the opportunity to visit world-class research facilities, meet leading scientists and undertake cutting edge technology and experiences usually

unavailable to the general public.

The selection of delegates is based on academic merit and interest in science with a recommendation from their Science teacher. Both Renae and Abby were required to provide a supporting essay with their applications. Abby’s essay was entitled The administration of scientific research is too important to be in the hands of politicians or the bureaucracy and Renae’s was Mathematics is the language of Science and both were judged to be of outstanding quality resulting in their

invitation to this prestigious event.

Two years later, things were about to change for Gavin when he met now wife Vivian – two years later they were engaged, marrying in August 1978 and having two children – Nathan, who is now 36, and 34 year old Amber – both now married with their own families. In 1977, Gavin not only got engaged to Vivian but he also switched jobs and went to work for Peat Marwick Accountants.

Not often associated with adventure, Gavin’s accounting career saw the McEachern family head off on quite the adventure in 1987 when Gavin undertook a secondment to manage the Honiara office of KPMG in the Solomon Islands – a role he enjoyed for two years before again returning to Mount Gambier.

Gavin continued his association with accounting giant KPMG until 1996, when after 19 years of working for other people, he purchased the local practice and branched out on his own.

Since then the client base has increased significantly with Mount Gambier acting as a central point for a diverse range of regional clients in the manufacturing, transport, forestry, agricultural and retail servicing industries, just to name a few. The firm has clients stretching from Tasmania to Perth and Darwin and everywhere in between.

The practice takes pride in providing friendly, accessible and personal contact with clients offering a comprehensive range of accounting, taxation and selfmanaged superannuation fund services.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS Three years after Gavin went out on his own, daughter Amber decided to follow in her father’s footsteps, also attending Deakin University’s Warrnambool campus to study accounting. She completed her commerce degree in accounting three years later and joined Gavin J McEachern & Associates to further her skills and become a qualified CPA accountant. Amber remains a key part of the McEachern & Associates team to this day. In June 2013, Gavin celebrated 40 years of crunching the numbers and was honoured with a dinner put on by his loyal staff, who also presented him with a framed picture to commemorate the occasion. On July 1 this year, Gavin is set to celebrate another career milestone – 20 years since he purchased the KPMG practice and built his own legacy in accounting in the region.

The continued success of the practice has been possible due to the loyal staff that have contributed to providing friendly, professional and personal service to Gavin’s clients over the twenty years.

GAVIN & THE NEED FOR SPEED Given Gavin’s background and profession it is amusing to understand how he became involved in speedway.

“It all started because I broke lots of bones playing football,” Gavin said. “I had some friends who were involved in running the bitumen track at Portland Southern 500 Speedway and that is how I got in to racing.”

Gavin then joined the Borderline Speedway in Mount Gambier and had a very successful racing career, racing super sedans and quickly becoming a local icon.

He was given life membership to the speedway after retiring and is still involved with the running of the club today.

He has always had a liking for Holdens and to this day he has kept and restored his mother’s 1972 LJ Torana.

Gavin honoured his late mother’s wishes for her Torana to be driven to Drik Drik for her funeral in April this year.

Portland district dairy farmers facing financial problems in the wake of major price cuts are being encouraged to seek free help if they need it. Portland District Health is part of Farmers Regional Health and Wellbeing Group and is supporting access to the Rural Financial Counselling Service.

David Stafford from the South West Victoria and Wimmera Rural Financial Counselling Service said the free independent advice could help farmers and other small business people to get through the tough times and be ready for when conditions improve.

“We help people with anything financial and assist families assess and understand their financial position,” Mr Stafford said. “If people are facing difficulties we can explore options to improve the situation, such as preparation of cash flow, forward forecasting, negotiations with suppliers or financiers, and applications for income assistance and concessional loans.”

Mr Stafford said most recent calls to the service had come from dairy farmers.

“Dairy farmers are the major client at the moment because of the impact the price drop is having on people, but up until March there were also many droughtimpacted farms seeking assistance.

Mr Stafford said farmers were starting to cut back on stock levels and general spending. A rural financial counsellor can meet people on their property, office or another convenient location The service is free, independent of financial institutions, welfare

This consultation examined the community’s needs, demands and aspirations with respect to the library service offered in the district and what services the community believes a library needs to offer to service their needs now and over the next 20-30 years. According to the 2015 consultation the community desires space, activities and services beyond what is currently provided or currently achievable in the existing building.

Each option has a preliminary project cost estimate that is a guide to the likely cost. Once the preferred option is determined a comprehensive financial assessment of the option will be undertaken.

Option one is to renovate the existing library at a cost of $1,210,394. This 335m2 option addresses the current maintenance and repair work required in the library. It also provides new toilet facilities and a parent’s room, while addressing changes to library shelving layouts, and bringing the building into alignment with current Building and Disability Codes.

Renovating and extending the existing library in option two at a cost of $3,752,519, providing 735m2 of space, will address the majority of spaces desired in the Your Services consultation.

This option provides a facility that will serve the community’s needs into the future but working with the existing library building has the potential to pose limitations to design and planning outcomes that would not be present with a new build.

Options three and four represent a clean slate approach to the library with the existing library being demolished. At a cost of $4,487,300, option three consists of a new 780m2 purpose built library.

Option four, at a cost of $5,811,325, has a

footprint area of 1020m2 which is a full representation of a modern library brief, with all spaces provided in full and a cafe included.

Option 5 constructs a 775m2 new library connecting the current Council Chambers at a cost of $5,225,156 and a potential 420m2 upper floor gallery at an additional cost of $2,000,000. This option is similar to Option 3 in library size and schedule of areas accommodated. In addition this option creates a shared use foyer space that connects the existing council office and the new library. There is also some additional floor space and minor reworking within the council offices as part of the works.

A new 1150m2 library, 660m2 council offices and upper floor 550m2 gallery for $12,930,747 is option six. This represents an approach to provide all spaces within the library to address the Your Service community consultation and trends within modern libraries.

DIVERSE KIDS THEATRE PROGRAM Fun4Kids aims to ignite imagination and spark creativity amongst kids and their families, providing great benefits for children engaging with vast forms of performing arts including dance, circus, sports, acrobatics, theatre, culture, music and the arts. Michael Frawley, Service Manager of Warrnambool’s Lighthouse Theatre said that the research has told us for years that people who engage with the arts in a positive way during childhood are far more likely to carry an appreciation for the arts into adult life. “We’re now starting to learn that this early exposure to the performing arts has benefits that extend beyond just the box office,” he said. “Young audiences learn empathy, imagination, life skills, and confidence that they then carry into all areas of our society. I know this to be true from my own experience - involvement with the performing arts at a young age has provided me with a gateway to confidence, friendships, life skills and ultimately a challenging and rewarding career.”

WALL TO WALL FUN AT FESTIVAL The Urban Arts experience will host its own “hangout” where you can drop in anytime and participate in a range of fun workshop sessions during this week’s Fun4Kids Fesitval in Warrnambool. BRUSHING OFF THE COBWEBS Cellar Dwellers is a time for wine lovers to truly indulge the palate - it’s the only time of the year the cellar doors dust off their museum wines, back vintages and special release wines. It is an event on the Coonawarra calendar that evolved as so many of these Coonawarra events have evolved – through the innovative thinking and cooperative efforts of the region’s vignerons.

It was a concept born when the vignerons were looking for a hook to increase visitation during the quieter winter months and it’s a concept that has thrived – attracting, particularly, the genuine wine appreciators, to sample some of the region’s best and rarest drops, highlighting the superb aging ability of Coonawarra wines. It is just another example of many that sees the Coonawarra vignerons working side by side to develop the brand, increase the region’s profile and ensure Coonawarra remains the premier wine region on wine lovers’ lips.

Running for the month of July, Cellar Dwellers has a program highlighted a raft of special events held over the four weekends in July. There is a Southern Riesling Trail to follow and around 20 wineries dusting off some exceptional cellared treasures.

In speaking about this year’s program, Jamie McDonald – Events and Marketing Officer with Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated, said there were more than 30 events to choose from. “Cellar Dwellers is run across the month of July and is designed to showcase beautiful back vintage, special release and aged wines from a wide range of Coonawarra cellars,” Mr McDonald said. “In some instances, July is the only time of the year that some of those very special wines can be savoured.”

Mr McDonald said the Cellar Dwellers was an annual celebration of the region’s wine credentials, and wasn’t limited to the iconic Cabernet Sauvignon that Coonawarra is internationally renowned for.

“We really want people to take the opportunity to visit the region and taste for themselves why Coonawarra wines are renowned the world over for their

outstanding quality, flavour and cellaring abilities,” said Mr McDonald.

While Mr McDonald thought there was something for everyone, he did say that some special highlights included: a jazz event on the opening weekend being headlined by Melbourne -based band ‘Shirazz Jazz’; a Masterclass featuring five decades of wine; a long lunch; two events that put to the test the cork vs cap debate; and a Riesling Trail being hosted by four cellar doors to help expand people’s appreciation of the region’s wines.

‘I’m especially excited about our jazz event this Saturday, which will have a hot New Orleans feel about it to warm up the crowd at Rymill Hall,” said Mr McDonald.

“Of course, there will also be a range of cellar door tastings, special food and wine events and vineyard experiences to showcase the breadth of our beautiful wines, our emerging food destination credentials, with the warmth and hospitality that is so … Coonawarra.”

TURNING UP THE HEAT Melbourne’s famous Shirazz Jazz Band makes their first South Australian appearance at Coonawarra this Saturday when they help kick-off the month long Cellar Dwellers celebrations. This vibrant band of talented musicians play some of the hottest trad (traditional) jazz around, and after years of South Australians encouraging them to head west, the boys are finally doing a short-but-sweet South Australian tour.

“We have met plenty of South Australian jazz fans at Victorian festivals in places like Halls Gap or Mildura, and they keep telling us we need to come visit SA”, said Matt Dixon, leader and trombonist/vocalist in Shirazz. “But it’s taken us a while to get our act together.”

Shirazz (pictured) has plenty of other touring experience, having performed all over the eastern states, as well as throughout Victoria.

“We love being on the road, it’s great to go to new places and meet new people, and we’ve had some really great tour experiences,” says Matt. “And we’ve met lots of interesting people and shared the stage with some great local acts.”

Since 2010, Shirazz has been wowing audiences with their exciting and approachable take on traditional jazz music.

“Jazz fans love that we’re keeping the style alive, as many traditional musicians are nearing retirement”, says Matt, “but even non-jazz fans find the music accessible and fun … and I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had people tell us that they didn’t think they liked jazz, but they loved whatever it is that we do!”

Shirazz’s lively and rumbunctious show at Rymill Hall, Penola, will take in traditional New Orleans material, mixing in reimagined pop hits and their own cheeky originals to deliver their famous infectious live sound. Don’t be surprised to hear Beatles or Michael Jackson tunes alongside King Oliver or Louis Armstrong numbers, with a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour and lively banter between.

FARM INJURIES IN THE SPOTLIGHT Feedback is sought on a new study which has reviewed the significance of heritage items and places within Portland. The public is invited to information sessions on the Portland Heritage Gap Study early July, with people encouraged to provide their feedback on the draft report’s findings and recommendations which identifies a number of new historical sites across Portland and district.

Consultants Jacobs Group (Australia) has spent almost 12 months assessing a number of places of heritage significance that have not been previously recognised or afforded protection.

The study provides background research necessary to protect the sites as heritage places. Glenelg Shire Council strategic planner Liz Regent, who is coordinating the project, urged people to provide their feedback and reasoning as to why the new sites should be provided heritage protection.

The consultants have liaised widely with local historical societies and residents to ensure all areas are identified.

Two public ‘drop-in’ information sessions will be held on Wednesday 6 July from 2.30pm to 4pm and 5pm to 7pm at the Portland Library.

The report is available to view at the Portland Customer Service Centre, Cliff St, Portland and on Council’s website at www.glenelg.vic. gov.au/Strategic_ Planning.

FROM PAGE 47 BLY swimmers’ main focus in the summer season is gearing up for the main event, the SA Country Swimming Championships. This year one of BLY’s largest contingents made the trip to Loxton to compete over four days. There were many successes by swimmers and even records broken.

Also the 12& Under Medley relay team of Hayley Pearson, Emma O’Callaghan, Ash Spicer and Kiah Connolly broke the State and Country record by a country team. Thomas Bignell also won the Boys 11&U Shield.

A week later seven swimmers competed at the State Championships. Thomas Bignell, Luke Janssen, Archie Muller and Nicole Moran made finals. Hayley Pearson also made reserves in finals. Kiah Connolly also competed as well as our youngest competitor at only 9 years of age, Leila Croker. Thomas won gold in his 50m breaststroke and broke the state record by a country swimmer at prelims and again at finals.

Some swimmers also competed in the South Eastern Swimming Association (SESA) competition over 6 swim meets during the summer season. Many BLY swimmers won trophies in their age groups.

Hayley Pearson’s clean sweep of 4 gold medals earned her a spot in the State team competing in Darwin in September this year.

In November two BLY swimmers, Nicole Moran and Luke Janssen, were invited to be part of a Country Development Squad in Adelaide which was run by Swimming SA. They were invited based on their achievement at Country Championships held last year in Mount Gambier.

The huge achievements and rewards BLY swimmers earned this season is not only due to their efforts in the pool, but also a reflection of the coaching team, committee, parents and volunteers who all help to make BLY such a supportive, successful and friendly club. Three Limestone Coast clay target shooting clubs have pulled off a stellar achievement after the inaugural Limestone Coast Sporting 225 attracted more than 90 shooters to the region over the June long weekend. Adding to the events success local South East Shooter and current Australian champion Jeremy Kent took top honours over the challenging three day shoot.

Generous sponsorship made the event possible with Gold Sponsors K & S Fuels, Global Clay Technologies and Best Ociana Seafood. Silver sponsors included Midfield Group, Baxter Hire and Wannon Farm Machinery.

Jeremy Kent (pictured), from Millicent, shot an outstanding score of 215/225 to claim the $2000 overall High Gun. The three day shoot was a supreme test of skill and concentration with a number of local shooters rising to the challenge and shooting in excess of 200 targets. Warrnambool’s Jamie Dunn took runner up honours with 211/225 while Bill Zogogiannis from Melbourne came in third with a score of 208/225.

Day one at Kingston saw the rain stop just in time for the first squads to test course setter Bruce Parkers targets. Jamie Dunn was High Gun for the day with 71/75 while Ron Rhook took out the veterans class after overcoming a bumpy start when he realised he had forgotten to bring his gun. Feathers unruffled, Ron borrowed a gun and broke targets with his usual skill and cool composure.

Day 2 at Lake Bonney saw near perfect weather conditions for shooters to tackle Mark Fabris’ challenging course. High Gun for the day was Former Australian Champion Anthony Panetta with a score of 73/75.

Day 3 at Burrungule Park started at 8.30am with cold conditions for shooters on Ken Atkin’s variety of targets. Jeremy Kent shot an amazing 74/75 to win High Gun for the day.

With $500 on the line for the events overall grade winners competition was tough on the last day.

AA grade was won overall by Jamie Dunn from Bill Zogogiannis. Tony Sellars (197/225) warmed up for the World Titles in Italy next month with a win over Heath Telford in A grade. Jeremy Hellyer said goodbye to B grade with an excellent 187/225 to beat John Hill. C grade was won by Mark Hogan from Charles Wallis. Veterans was won by Ron Rhook with 203/225 over Chris Ball. Super Vets was won by Adelaide’s John Torresan (195/225) over local favourite Malcolm Whitehead. Ladies was won by Kellie Peterson and Daniel Banning won the juniors. The Sub Junior class was won by talented Adelaide shooter Daniel Falco who shot a highly credible 191/225.

The three clubs were congratulated by the winners and competitors on a well-run event with many stating that it was “quite an achievement” running such an event across three locations. Visitors found the clubs to be very welcoming and many have promised that

they will be back next year, bringing more shooters with them. Local photographer Darren Galwey spent the weekend capturing the shooters in action and recording the event winners. ATHLETIC DEMON REACHES 100 GAMES Isabel Redemski is a talented athlete, who is making her mark in the world of athletics as a sprinter, but she has more strings to her bow that running and on Saturday, she clocked up her 100th game for South Gambier. Isabel (pictured below with her parents kate & Ted Redemski) is a hard running midcourter, who has been playing 17 & under netball for the club for the past two seasons, even when she was still eligible for 15 & under competition, and she is also a key member of the club’s A Reserve in 2016.

Local Sport LOWER SE HOCKEY - A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

Lower South Hockey Association has this year introduced for the first time the positon of Archives Administrator. The role involves establishing an ongoing digital record of results, awards and statistics but it also encompasses researching and displaying the history of hockey in Mt Gambier the South East generally. Stephen Hockey has taken on the role for the association and has begun publishing via social media, historic photos of teams that are celebrating significant anniversaries of premiership wins highlighted by those celebrating 20 and 40 year anniversaries. Hockey has been played in Mt Gambier since 1914 so there is a lot of history there to research and celebrate.

Many great photos have been discovered in the depths of the association’s records but the association is putting out a call to all past members and enthusiasts for any old photos or clippings that they may hold in their own private collections. A few members have already done

this with clippings relating to a 1950’s visit of the Canadian hockey team to Mt Gambier in particular being a highlight. The association is also keen to display the history of hockey in its display cabinets at the Blue Lake Sports Park clubrooms. They already have some great memorabilia on display but are keen to find those elusive trophies and pennants that have also disappeared over the years. Even old hockey sticks would make a nice feature.

The association also needs to identify names and teams in many photos that unfortunately were never recorded. Photos are being distributed via our Lower South East Hockey Facebook group with members having the opportunity to share what knowledge they have about each photo.

SEABL - PIONEERS GET THE JOB DONE ON THE ROAD While the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers took a while to assert their dominance, the result was rarely in doubt, particularly in the second half, and eventually they returned home with a 26 point victory over Albury Wodonga.

It was nine points at the first change and five at the half and it was two surges in the second half that showed the Pioneers were, in fact, a class above.

With six and a half minutes to playing the third, the Pioneers went on a 11-0 run that broke the game open, on the back of perimeter shooting from Brad Hill and Erik Burdon. Burdon, in fact, hit three for the quarter on his way to 13 points for the match.

A similar purple patch for the visitors early in the last put the result beyond doubt, as they piled on 14 unanswered points, punctuated by two three point bombs from Luke Jamieson and Jack Madgen, when the Pioneers held a game high 31 point lead.

Tyrone Lee was again a standout with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Hill (18) and Burdon (13) were on fire from three point territory.

The Pioneers host the Melbourne Tigers on Friday night. Tip off is at 8pm.

Melbourne has managed only two wins for the season, while the Pioneers are sitting second in the South Conference, only one win behind ladder leaders Hobart.
