COVER - THE APSLEY CUP...MORE THAN JUST A HORSE RACE From fine arts to magnificent millinery and serious cycling, this year’s edition of the Di Giorgio Family Wines Apsley Cup is about so much more than racing. Victoria’s oldest racing club is all set for the 161st year of its famous cup race, to be held on Sunday, June 12, at the Edenhope Racecourse. The Apsley Racing Club committee and the local communities have been working hard to put together a number of events to complement the races, including an art exhibition, workshops with internationally-renowned milliner Neil Grigg, and the inaugural Tour de Francis cycling race. Club manager Sara McDonnell said they were endeavouring to give people more reason to visit the area over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. “We want people to come and see everything this region has to offer,” she said. “You could ride in the Tour de Frances, dress to the nines for the Cup Eve Black Tie Ball, back a winner at the races and party after at the Border Inn. “Hopefully our visitors come for the whole weekend and enjoy what’s sure to be a fantastic Apsley Cup.” WHAT’S HAPPENING... Redtail Art Gallery, Edenhope In the lead up to the cup weekend, the Redtail Art Gallery in Edenhope has put the call out to artists of all variety (and ability) to enter their best racing-themed piece in a competition sponsored by the race club. All pieces will be exhibited at the gallery, with the grand opening to be held on Saturday, May 21, from 2pm. Neil Grigg, Milliner On Saturday, June 4, internationallyrenowned milliner Neil Grigg will be holding two workshops at the Border Inn. This will

be a great opportunity for people to learn to make their own hats or fascinators for an extra-special race day look. Le Tour de Frances Prepare for this year’s Tour de France with the inaugural Tour de Frances. This cycling event from Apsley to Frances will take place on Saturday, June 11, the day before the cup. The route will take riders on a scenic journey between these two popular towns, before they enjoy lunch at the Frances Hotel on arrival and either ride back or catch the bus. A variety of distances are on offer, from the full 80km round trip, the 40km oneway, or cyclists can join the ride at Benayo (20km) or at Binnum (10Km). This is the firstever running of the event, which has been organised by the Edenhope Murray to Moyne cycling team, in conjunction with the Apsley Racing Club. Cup Eve Black Tie Ball For those wanting to dress up and get down, the Harrow Bush Nursing centre will host the traditional Cup Eve Black Tie Ball at the Harrow Hall. Live entertainment will be provided by the Brians, with catering by Fiona Wall Fine Foods. As always this is a night not to be missed, and all those attending will receive admission to the races the next day at half-price. Fashions on the Field The Apsley Cup always has a focus on fashion. The ever-popular Black and White theme will continue, while the day will also have a focus on wool. Club Manager Sara McDonnell said the club was pleased to welcome back the AWI Runway 101 Fashion Parade. “There are a number of wool garments from well-known designers, including Country Road, SABA, Lady Kate,
Sabatini & Danielle Chiele,” she said. “We are so lucky to have these stunning outfits modelled by gorgeous local talent.” The Fashions on the Field competitions include best dressed race goer (male and female) and best dressed in black and white. Children’s fashions will also be included, with fantastic prizes up for grabs. Retro Race International Melbourne Athletics Club are launching the inaugural Australian Retro (Backwards) Running Championship to this year’s event. This is particularly significant to host this at the Apsley event as on Boxing Day 1866 (150 years ago this year Aboriginal Cricketer Murrumgunerrimin (Jimmy Tarpot) thrilled the crowd at the MCG, with the unusual feat of running 100 yards backwards in 14 seconds. Jimmy worked on Bringalbert Station (on the outskirts of the Apsley township) was also selected in “The First Eleven” which was an Aboriginal team that toured England in the 1860s. Fun for Kids The kids are well looked after on cup day. When they are not bouncing away on the Edenhope & District Community Bank jumping castle, or riding the bucking bull, they can have their faces painted or be entertained by the Great Gizmo, a unique character with a particular magic of his own.
The details Buses to and from the races will be running from Naracoorte, Frances, Apsley, Edenhope, Penola & Harrow. Gates open at 11am with the first race at 12:01pm. The race day program consists of eight races, with a total of $30,500 in prize money likely to boost fields on the day. After the races everyone is invited to the Border Inn, the after-party venue to celebrate the most memorable long weekend on the social calendar in 2016. For full details on all the events visit the Apsley Racing Club’s Facebook page, website (http://www.countryracing.com.au/Apsley) or contact club manager Sara McDonnell on 0407 717 740.
Above - The great Gizmo will be back in 2016 to delight the crowds.

ADVERTORIAL - MAKING SURE YOUR HOME NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD Gail Richards has worked in the local real estate industry for more than 14 years and over that time she has certainly seen her share of changes in the property market and the expectations of both buyers and vendors. The former sales consultant is now providing what she believes to be a glaring gap in the real estate game – property presentation. “I was finding that vendors always wanted the best price for their homes but they were walking away dissatisfied because buyers had reasons to beat them down in price,” Gail said. “The home either wasn’t presented well or it was priced too high but generally a combination of these two things was why the property wasn’t selling.” Gail realised that presentation of properties for sale has certainly seen its share of improvements – the most dramatic being the upturn in use of professional photographers that specialise in real estate photography. ” But if the photographer doesn’t have a good product to photograph you have wasted your money, staging is the service we have been missing to ensure sales success,” Gail said. And so she decided not only to set up Key 2 Sale – her new venture offers pre-sale home staging consultations and property showcasing services, where she can use your furniture or hire rental furniture. Management of property clean ups for deceased estates, mortgagee in possession and vacant rental properties prior to sale are also services she can provide. Gail headed to Sydney last year and completed internationally certified staging training, passing with flying colours, and she is now determined to pass on everything she has learnt to vendors throughout the region. Arguably her biggest challenge is convincing people just how valuable property
staging can be in getting the best price possible for your property. “I was always surprised to hear how many people were happy to invest money in getting their car detailed and fixing up any dents or scratches before they sold it – an asset that depreciates in value - but I couldn’t understand why most wanted to sell their greatest asset as is and hope for the best,” Gail said. Her experience as a sales consultant taught her that many vendors viewed outlaying money on a house they were moving out of as a waste of money and not realising how even a small investment can really improve not only your likelihood of selling but also getting a good price. “I was always taught you need to spend money to make money and in property selling this is generally true but the key is to spend the money you have in the right areas and that’s where I come in,” Gail said. “I always tell people to think about selling your home like going out on your first date. Naturally, you want to make a great first impression, so you dress up, put your make up on and look your best. Your home should be treated exactly the same when selling. Those first impressions generally are what gets you a second date or in this case inspection. You want your property to look its best – not how you live, but how you want buyers to envisage living in your home.” A consultation by Gail, which generally takes 2-2.5 hours, involves both assessing the property and recommending what you need to do. All her
recommendations are provided in writing and you can either do the jobs yourself or she can project manage for you. Advising clients on the perils of trying to sell a vacant property is also on Gail’s hit list. “Vacant properties look particularly dull and boring without furniture and it can be hard for buyers to envisage the layout of the property and where they will place their furniture,” Gail said. “I can also rent furniture for vacant properties to enhance their appeal or if your property is occupied I can work with what furniture you have to its best.” When Gail left real estate sales she certainly didn’t want to leave the industry. “Property has always been my passion, I love houses and I love helping people find a solution to their property problems,” she said. For Gail, finding this
niche in the market and value adding for vendors in what is a super competitive market, has been the perfect way for Gail to continue to stay involved with the region’s property market. “There are many steps to successful marketing of your property and home staging is now becoming the next service to help ensure that you get every last dollar from the sale of your property,” she said. Gail’s intimate knowledge and long standing experience across all aspects of the local real estate landscape only adds to her suitability for this new business. Head to www.key2sale.com.au for more information and to see just what Gail can achieve for you or call Gail on 0409 268 199 to make an appointment today for advice on how best to sell your property.

FAMILY PROGRAM IN FOCUS Yoga, ‘upcycled music’, selfie competitions and circus workshops are just some of the eclectic mix of events organised for children as part of the ‘Big Kids, Little Kids Art Zone’ over the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival weekend in May. Catering for ages from five through to teens, the Festival program presents more than twelve workshops, performances, and competitions - many of them free - ranging from photography to dance, and sculpture to an Open Mic session, over the four day event. According to children’s program coordinator Nicole Lear, this year’s 25th Festival children’s program fulfills a long held vision of the committee. “Over the past five years of the festival in particular, the committee has made a concerted effort to grow its range of offerings for children, both in variety and accessibility, ” Ms Lear said. “We were particularly keen to source performances and workshops tailored for early teens, a market that can be often overlooked in arts based events.” With a loose theme of ‘anyone can be an artist’, many of the events have been designed to show how art is accessible and can be created from a low cost base, with a particular emphasis on recycling and reuse. The ‘Upcycled Music’ workshop will give children the opportunity to create, build and play musical instruments out of recycled materials. Similarly Adelaide-based artist
James Parker’s collage session will use techniques developed through the 2015 International Cardboard Challenge and inspired by outsider artist James Castle by constructing their favorite bird using recycled cardboard – but no tape or glue. In keeping with this theme, the ‘Anyone can be a photographer’ workshop will see South East photographer Louise Agnew bring her experience to youth to learn about positive self-esteem, mindfulness and how to exist online in a healthy way. A new addition to the festival is ‘Kids Open Mic’, giving young musicians, singers, writers and poets a chance to share their talents in the heart of the festival. Another first will see Country Arts SA bringing its unique ‘Dance Jungle Gym’ to Penola’s Memorial Park, allowing children of all ages to be led through a maze-like structure with audio directions from a downloadable app. Once through, they are able to recreate the same moves, discovering they have just learnt a contemporary dance piece. The creative, vibrant and highly skilled ‘Pants Down Circus Rock’ ensemble headlines this year’s Festival, with its exciting performance to be held in Penola’s Rymill Hall on Sunday, May 22. The ensemble will also be doing street performances over the weekend, and will host two workshops, each with a focus on either juggling or circus skills. “We are particularly excited to be hosting ‘Pants
Down Circus Rock’ over the weekend – with their production being part circus/part rock it will appeal to the whole family and is sure to be a Festival highlight,” said Ms Lear. “We encourage everyone to come along and get involved in all these amazing arts opportunities over the weekend. The ‘Big Kids Little Kids Art Zone’ in Penola’s Memorial Park will be the place to be over the Festival.” The full program and tickets are available through www. artsfestival.com.au, or at the Penola Visitor Information Centre on (08)8737 2855.

HEYWOOD’S KOORIE KIDS SHINE ON THE BIG SCREEN
AT THE GALLERY
More Indigenous and Torres Strait islander families are enrolling their children in early learning programs across the state due to the efforts of the Heywood Kindergarten. The Koorie Kids Shine State Government initiative, launched today at the Heywood Kindergarten, is a digital strategy assisting more Victorians to realise the importance of kindergarten and early learning programs. The two-minute digital stories, which can be viewed at www.glenelg.vic.gov.au/kindergarten, showcase Heywood families and their children, plus kindergarten staff, discussing the benefits of early learning services to the local community. The state wide campaign, which has been running throughout the year, provides a clear message to families that it is never too late to enrol your child. Featuring in the digital stories are local families including Troy and Jenna Lovett, Zoe Chambers and Aunty Laura Bell alongside kindergarten teacher Corinna Bell, Koorie engagement support officer Dianne Bell and kindergarten pre-school assistant Tayarrah Morris. To support the digital message all children’s services across Victoria are receiving Koorie Kids Shine information packs in addition to direct engagement with local support services. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander applauded the initiative. “It is fantastic to see that a small regional kindergarten can help influence a state wide movement, encouraging more indigenous children into three and four-yearold kindergarten programs,” he said. “We are fortunate to have a highly skilled and dedicated team at Heywood, and across our shire network, who provide quality, culturally aware programs that nurture Aboriginal children’s cultural identity.” He said three and four-year-old kindergarten was free for Aboriginal and Torres Strait children. “Research shows us that two years of kindergarten makes a huge difference to how children fare at school. It helps them become confident learners, and

THEATRE ICON TO BE IMMORTALISED The Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre is ready to undergo an artistic makeover with funds allocated by the State Government for critical upgrades to regional theatres. As part of the bold design, the 30 metre high flytower will come to life with a giant portrait of the theatre’s namesake Sir Robert Helpmann. New zinc panels fixed to a metal structure will clad the building’s outer skin to form a protective barrier that will prevent further weather damage. The City of Mount Gambier and co-tenant Country Arts SA have spent several months investigating potential solutions to safeguard the iconic 34 year old building after signs of deterioration. Mount Gambier architectural firm Chapman Herbert Architects was awarded the tender after winning an architectural design competition last year. Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre manager Frank Morello (pictured) said the fly-tower’s artistic treatment would add to the precinct’s growing reputation as the city’s cultural centre. “While it was imperative to fix the structural issues associated with the panels, implementing an innovative solution is a fantastic outcome for the Civic Centre and Mount Gambier,” Mr Morello said. “The exterior of the building will now reflect the creative and artistic activities that occur on the theatre’s stage, including a portrait of Sir Robert Helpmann - a fitting tribute to an international
artist who began his life in Mount Gambier.” Sir Robert ‘Bobby’ Helpmann is the logical choice for inspiring the artwork on the fly tower. As an internationally acclaimed ballet dancer, actor, producer, director and choreographer, the local boy made good has also been the inspiration for the establishment of the Helpmann Academy and was Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival from 1970–’76. Country Arts SA will contribute half the cost of this upgrade from the Government-allocated money and the Mount Gambier City Council, who share the building, will contribute the other half.

Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Heat a 3L (12cup) capacity flameproof, ovenproof casserole dish over medium-high heat. Add half the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes each side or until golden. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with the remaining chicken, reheating the dish between batches. Use kitchen paper to wipe the dish to remove excess fat. Heat oil in the dish over medium-high heat. Add the bacon, leek, mushroom
and garlic and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Add the flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until well combined. Add the stock, wine and thyme, and bring to the boil. Return the chicken to the dish. Cover and bake in oven for 1 hour or until the juices run clear when the chicken is pierced with a skewer. Use tongs to transfer the chicken to a plate. Transfer the remaining leek mixture to a medium saucepan. Add the cream and bring to the boil over medium-high heat. Cook for 5 minutes or until sauce thickens slightly. Divide the mash among serving plates and top with the chicken. Pour over the leek mixture to serve.

LIMESTONE COAST HOSTS MAJOR FOOD EVENT A food event featuring high-profile interstate and international guests, Paul West and Liz Carlisle and Limestone Coast produce proved a sell-out last Saturday. “From Little Things Big Things Grow” was one of the main events of South Australia”s Tasting Australia festival. It started with an apple orchard walk at Kalangadoo Organic where Michelle and Chris McColl explained how they use mulching, chickens, ducks and geese in their integrated certified-organic horticultural system. Paul West, host of Lifestyle TV’s runaway success, River Cottage Australia, explained how he believed it was never too late to start appreciating fresh food. He’d never eaten fresh fruit straight from the tree until he was twenty-one but that led to him becoming a chef. The River Cottage Australia series has followed his conversion to small-plot landholder. On a farm near Tilba in New South Wales, he has learned to grow his own fruit and vegetables, raise poultry for eggs and meat, keep a house cow, and appreciate all the locally-grown food and seafood on his doorstep. Mount Gambier chef Kirby Shearing prepared a shared-table lunch at Bellwether Wines showcasing the quality and variety of Limestone Coast produce: lamb, lentils, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, yoghurt and labne, apples, potatoes, cheese and Bellwether wines. A keen forager, Kirby won special praise from the assembled food lovers with his soup made from wild nettles. Liz Carlisle had travelled from the US where, in New York, her awardwinning book, The Lentil Underground, has just been named one of the Top Twenty food books. The farmers at the event

were particularly interested to hear from her how wheat growers in Montana, faced with depleted soils and erosion, had used legume cover crops and low-impact, organic farming methods to rejuvenate their land. There they had found lentils were among the most effective nitrogen-fixing legume crops which led to the Montana farmers harvesting and selling them and eventually resulted in a multi-million dollar food business called Timeless Seeds. Liz Carlisle said the Limestone Coast day was “heartfelt and inspiring”. Tasting Australia’s Co-Creative Director, Simon Bryant, said it was “awesome” that the Limestone Coast can stage such an amazing food experience. Tasting Australia presented by Thomas Foods is South Australia’s premier eating and drinking festival and one of the pre-eminent food and wine festivals in Australia. Next year’s festival will be staged around the State from April 30 to May 7.
Lee Kernaghan is Australia’s most respected country music artist who continues to deliver music that strikes a chord with many Australians. Lee’s new show, The Songs And The Stories In Concert, will take the audience through his amazing musical career and he will be performing many of his big hits and sharing for the very first time the stories behind the songs.

Local Sport KARATE Local trio enjoys championship success Three students from Seishikan Karate attended the School and University Karate Championship and the Australian Open karate championship in Sydney in April and came home with six medals. There were 1300 entries in each of the
tournaments, from Australia, New Zealand, Botswana, Peru, Fiji and New Caledonia. Lauren Frost was up first winning a bronze medal in the kata event. It was a tough competition but she had her karate instructor by her side coaching her. Alba Kraatz, who is a world judge A in kata, coached at the School and University Championships, in what was the last time she would be allowed to do so because of her ongoing commitment to refereeing. “At least I got to coach for a short time before resuming my official duties,” Alna said. “I guess my role as their karate instructor is to prepare them well enough prior to any tournaments. I have the confidence in them and they never let me down win or lose.” Lauren also had some great fights, mixing it up against bigger opponents winning a bronze medal. At the Australian Open Lauren fought much better and dominated the fights until the final bout for gold, losing a close fight to win a silver medal. Brother Bradley Frost fought extremely well to win gold in the junior male division and twas solid in the kata against much more experience competitors. In the Australian Open, Bradley fought well but had trouble dominating the final bout

FOOTBALL New partnership Gambier Centrals Soccer Club have signaled their intent to be a major force in years to come by securing a unique partnership with the Global Ambition Group. The partnership will see the formation of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Mount Gambier based club and Sydney based Global Ambition Group. Global Ambition is spearheaded by Paul Bentvelzen who is one of the most highly regarded junior development coaches in the country. President of Gambier Centrals Soccer Club Shane Dycer said the club was alerted of the impact and potential of Paul’s work late last year when they commenced searching for further development opportunities for their juniors. “Paul is well known in football circles at an elite level and has a close connection to one of our junior coaches going back to when they worked together in Sydney nearly two decades ago,” Shane said. “His CV is outstanding and he has the ambition and moral purpose that we, as a club, want to promote.” Bentvelzen holds an AFC A Licence, was the Oceania Director of COERVER Coaching from 19992007 and the High performance Manager at FNSW from 2007 to 2011. He holds a Masters in Education and was the presenter of the television series Football Stars of tomorrow from 2009 to 2011. Bentvelzen will provide assistance to the club’s junior coaches, provide coaching resources and periodized coaching plans, facilitate coaches’ workshops, provide resources and reading materials to junior players and parents and conduct High Intensity Training Camps both in the region and interstate for Young Lions. East Gambier’s Tenille Gray signed a country contract with Newton Jaguars after the club approached her after the 2015 Regional Championships in Adelaide. It meant Tenille would have the opportunity to train and play with the Premier League club, gaining invaluable experience of netball at a higher level. Between all Tenille’s other netball and basketball commitment, it has been tough for the star goaler to take advantage of the opportunity but earlier this month she did just that. She trained with the Premier League Reserves on the Tuesday night and was all set for a stint on the bench, just to experience how the players prepare pre-game. But in the end, the 2015 Team of the Year player hit the court in the second half, holding her own in her first outing, with solid feedback from the coaching staff. She played goal attack for the second half and having tasted the high level, Tenille is now motivated to see just how far she can take her netball.

With the rescheduled Port MacDonnell Offshore Angling Club’s annual tuna fishing competition getting underway at the weekend and set to finish this Saturday, the news last week of big tuna and good fishing, when the weather permitted, was music to the ears of organisers and competitors alike. Extreme Marine Charters, run by Jamie Widdison, had a couple of noteworthy catches, with Hayden Sneath hauling in a 128kg tuna after only a 15 minute tug-o-war, while only two days later, Dean Watson (pictured above) nudged that mark with a 110kg beauty, which took him an hour to haul in. Weather permitting, those sort of reports and some stories from other charter businesses about the ones that got away, suggest that the 2016 event could bring some hot competition and some potential recoard hauls.

NETBALL Eliza on State radar
OFFROAD RACING Mumbannar event on the horizon The Millicent Sand Buggy Club has been hard at work preparing for round 2 of their series to be held through the natural scrub block at Mumbannar, just 30kms east of Mount Gambier. Recent rainfall has been perfect for the sand and dirt, come race day on Saturday, May 21, track conditions will be the best seen at this circuit for a number of years. With a new race format for this years short course event, competitors are keen to get into the action for their two heats adding up to a final 150km. Many local teams have already entered, including Murray England in his Murco Super 1650 buggy, who will be looking to edge out son, Jake England, driving the Verco Hornet in the same class. Another father/ son rivalry is that of Gary and Shaun Klingberg, with Gary having the advantage of extra horsepower in his Pro Buggy over his son Shaun. Round 1 outright winner, Marty Scott, will be one to watch as he guides his V8 powered Pro Buggy around the winding track and hoping to make it two from two. Saturday morning will see all cars go through scrutineering and then line up to greet the green flag at 10.30am Victorian time. Camping is available at the track with toilets available and also a BBQ and drinks on the Saturday. Free entry to the public, with signs off Princes Highway. Entries are still open and available on offroadracing.com.au
Eliza Hunter is starting to make her mark on the State stage, joining Jordyn Adams and Nyah Allen as part of the 2016 South Australian Under 15 Schoolgirls netball team. Eliza has been names as a reserve, alongside Nyah, with Jordyn part of the selected line-up for the national championships. Eliza’s resume to this point is already impressive, after staring her career at West Gambier, the move to Kalangadoo has seen the individual and team accolades rack up. Eliza has won the association best and fairest in 2014 and ‘15, as well as the club titles and also in 2014 she was named best on court in the Magpies 2014 premiership. It was also the year Eliza played SAPSASA netball and she has also been a part of the South East Regional Academy in 2013, 2015, when the South East won the 15 & Under championship, as well as this year. Eliza has represented the Mid South East Netball Association from 2014-’16 and the chance to train with the State line-up will be invaluable for her development.

$8 MILLION MASTER PLAN FOR BUDJ BIM Plans to position the Budj Bim landscape as an international tourist destination have been further strengthened by an $8 million State Government investment. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander welcomed the funding commitment, announced earlier this month by Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Natalie Hutchins, towards stage one and two of the Budj Bim Master Plan. It follows a visit last month by Commonwealth Government representatives, reviewing the landscape for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list, recognising its unique cultural heritage values. The funding announcement will assist the Gunditjmirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Winda Mara Aboriginal Corporation to install interpretive signage, walking trails, picnic shelter areas and associated amenities across the Budj Bim landscape. The master plan identifies works in areas including Lake Condah, the Condah Mission, Mt Eccles, Kurtonitj wetland, the Tyrendarra IPA (Indigenous Protected Area) and Convincing Ground at Allestree. The multi-million dollar investment, to be spent over the next four years, will further enhance archaeological features across the landscape, such as Lake Condah’s eel traps and stone huts, with framed lens’ to direct people to the significant sites. Cr Oberlander said the funding would ensure the significant story of the Gunditjmara people was “brought to life”.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - YOU’VE GOT TO DO IT ONCE.. by Robbie Tansel Today I’ve gone through the excitement of a colonoscopy. For those not in the know, a colonoscopy is the culmination of three bloody horrible days. For anyone that is worried about my health I don’t think there’s really anything to worry about. I have a bit of discomfort in my belly and the doctor decided that the best way to deal with that was to film a reality show inside of my backside. Before I go too far, let me just say that I’m no stranger to things in my orifices. I picked my nose as a youngster. I sometimes try to dislodge wax from my ears. I regularly put food in my mouth. There was even this one time on band
SUDOKU
camp when I got particularly drunk…no that’s not true. I’ve never even played a musical instrument. The big difference in all of those cases is that I’m talking about holes that are dual purpose. They are designed for things to go in but also for things to go out. I have always been under the impression that my derriere was only an out hole, but the doctor and I had to agree to disagree on that one. Anyway, in the days leading up to this procedure you have very strict conditions regarding what must go into your body. Two days out from the procedure my diet was restricted to low fat yoghurt, peeled boiled potatoes, barley sugar and clear liquids. This was not at all good when it happened to be the same day as the annual Lutheran Church fair. My tradition is to eat my way around the fair. Donuts, sausage, hot chips, potato

pancakes and a lovely can of Coke to wash it down. Visiting the fair was a very special form of torture this year as I looked at all the things I’d like to eat. Don’t you worry, I’ll make up for it next year. I also paid a visit to Generations in Jazz which had a dazzling spread of goodness throughout the food court area. Again, it smelled so good and I couldn’t go near it. Things got even worse the next day. The torture on the day before my procedure was twofold. My diet was further restricted to nothing but clear liquids. No solids could come into my body. Whilst this was bad enough, I was also required to drink a special liquid designed to flush out my system. The doctor didn’t want to get his camera dirty in my butt so my insides needed to be squeaky clean. As you can imagine, the two hundred and thirty five times I went to the toilet made the fact I was starving just that little more pleasant. To be honest, having gone through the misery of the days of preparation, the actual procedure, wearing the lovely hospital gown, the bizarre disposable underwear, the complimentary red high grip hospital socks was actually the least of my worries. Let me repeat that. Having someone fossick around down back was the best part of the three days. The only good news is that after the procedure the doctor gives you a couple of rules that are clearly to any father’s benefit. Number one, I was told I needed to pass gas. Didn’t have to ask me twice about that one. Donna couldn’t grizzle at all as it was
under doctor’s orders. The second directive was that I was not allowed to be the primary carer for children. Brilliant! Sorry dear, but you’ll have to watch Shaquille tonight. I have to concentrate on passing gas. I can’t complain about the hospital experience at all. The hospital staff are very professional…until you’re under the general anaesthetic I presume. After that I’m sure they’re goofing off like all of the rest of us at our work places. I’m sure they played bongo drums on my naked butt and carried me round the hospital for a little while like the main character of Weekend At Bernies. And who can blame them. You’ve got to find some enjoyment in your work and the part where you put a video camera in a chubby guy’s butt and have a look around is surely not the enjoyable part of the job. Actually the part where they look at their bank account is probably the fun part Anyway, I’ve done it now and can tick it off my bucket list. If my doctor would like to contact me and tee up another painful, intrusive experience, he can email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

THE NICE GUYS • MAY 26 Oscar winner Russell Crowe and Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling star in the action comedy The Nice Guys. The movie takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. lifestyle1.net | 43 edit - robbie tansel.indd 1
