COVER - IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR Do you like your Hot Cross Buns fresh from the bakery, or warmed at home in the oven? Straight from the pack or toasted crisp and slathered in butter? Whichever way you like it best, a Hot Cross Bun remains a favourite treat for the whole family and you can get yours baked fresh every day from both Bakers Delight Mount Gambier bakeries. This Easter once again both Bakers Delight Mount Gambier bakeries will be tremendously busy baking thousands of Hot Cross Buns. Thursday, March 24, is Bun Day – the busiest day of the year! Bakers Delight bakeries are aiming to sell about 2.5 million Hot Cross Buns nationally on the day. An astonishing 173 tonnes of sultanas, 123 tonnes of currants and more than 68 tonnes of choc chips will be used nationally on Bun Day to bake delicious Hot Cross Buns. According to both Andrew Toogood,
Phone
franchisee of Commercial St, and Mark Jensen, franchisee of James St, Traditional Hot Cross Bun is still the best seller, with Choc-Chip coming in a close second. You’ll be able to find Mocha Hot Cross Buns at both bakeries as well – coffee lovers rejoice! Andrew and Mark are both active supporters of the local community. Between the two franchisees, they support several primary and secondary schools with product donations for breakfast clubs and fundraisers and also provide leftover product to regional Food Bank centres. Andrew says: “It’s very important to support the local community as every little bit helps. Bakers Delight held its annual fundraiser, known as ‘Bundraiser Day’ for children’s hospitals across the country on March 5. All South Australian bakeries rallied together to raise thousands of dollars for the Women’s
& Children’s Hospital Foundation, donating $1 from every 6-pack of Hot Cross Buns sold. Money raised will go towards the purchase of a new Cardiovascular and Cranial Ultrasound System for the Department of Neonatology. Whatever you are doing this Easter long
weekend, be it celebrating with family and friends or a quiet relaxing picnic down the lakes - be assured Bakers Delight is open every day baking an array of fresh goodies, so hop on in!
About Bakers Delight Bakers Delight, Australia’s most successful bakery franchise was established in 1980 as a single bakery on Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn, Melbourne. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - TAX ATTACKS ... by Robbie Tansel

I read with interest this week that our government are considering new taxes that are of course designed for our own good. As we all understand it is nothing to do with revenue raising to deal with their inability to manage a budget. It’s because they care about us. The first tax they want to bring in for our own good is on cigarettes. The talk is that the price of a packet of cigarettes may rise to forty dollars a packet. How on earth are people going to afford to slowly kill themselves? I’ve got no idea how long someone would need to wash their hair with shampoo containing sodium laureth sulphate before it would kill them like cigarettes. Maybe they could sit next to the microwave for a couple of months and see how that goes. Luckily I don’t smoke so that shouldn’t cause me too much trouble. On the other hand they’re also discussing the possibility of taxing sugary carbonated beverages more. That could be a little more of a problem for me. I like carbonated sugary beverages, particulary brown ones. Apart from the delightful taste, they are a very economical way to fulfil your fluid needs, as long as you ignore the dentist bills dealing with cavities and the doctor bills when you get diabetes and have heart issues later in life. I must say, it does surprise me that buying soft drink is cheaper than buying bottled water most of the time. After all, soft drink is predominantly water but they’ve added ingredients to it. Presumably these added ingredients are more expensive than if they filled the rest of the bottle with water, not to mention the cost that comes with processing these extra ingredients and then adding them into the original water. How about if you now factor in the fact that they also invest bucketloads more money into advertising the sugary carbonated

beverages which then has to be added onto the pricing. How can that then be cheaper than plain old bottled water? I can’t say I’m a big fan of this tax. With that in mind I’d like to suggest that there might be some other taxes they’d like to consider to raise revenue‌I mean for the betterment of people’s lives. The first one I’d like to suggest is that we tax politicians for stupid opinions. I guess that’s a bit more like a fine than a tax but there’s minimal difference between taxes and fines anyway. I think we all recognise that this one would be a huge money generator though, not to mention that it would be an actual benefit to the people of Australia. The politicians would have to think before they opened their mouth. Poor Corey Bernardi would be bankrupt before he left his house in the morning. Another one I’d like to consider is a tax on selfies. Remember the days when if you wanted a photo of you and your friend, you’d have to ask another human being to take the photo. Apparently that was an antiquated idea that created photos that were good which is why people now hold a camera up in front of their own faces looking like morons and produce a photo that is never centred quite right and cuts off half the people’s faces That’s not a good thing. But if we started taxing people one cent per selfie, not only would people think a bit more before they took a photo, we’d raise enough money to solve world poverty, cure cancer, and get something decent on the tele. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com if there’s something you’d like to tax.
MOVIE OF THE WEEK
ZOOTOPIA * NOW SHOWING From the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law. Determined to prove herself, Judy jumps at the opportunity to solve a mysterious case. Unfortunately, that means working with Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a wily fox who makes her job even harder.

TELLING THE STORIES OF WOMEN ON THE LAND “I’m sitting down to write the opening lines of this book a year to the day since my mum died. She is constantly in my thoughts, not just because I miss her terribly, but because she was the inspiration for this collection of stories about women who have come from very different places to make a new life in rural Australia.” Liz Harfull (Author) The inspiring true stories of courageous women forging new lives in the Australian bush, from the bestselling author of Women of the Land. City Girl, Country Girl brings together the stories of women who have left lives in the city or another country to build a new future in places where knowing how to milk a cow or drive a tractor stand them in far better stead than an ability to negotiate rush-hour traffic or find a good cappuccino. It ranges in scope from the classic outback story of Sarah Durack in the late 1800s, to the author’s own mother’s experiences of swapping wartime Melbourne for a dairy farm on the Limestone Coast, to the present day. City Girl, Country Girl is a compelling and fascinating account of these women’s journeys as they struggle through personal tragedy, hardship and self-doubt with grace, humour, perseverance and more than a little hard work. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Liz Harfull is passionate about telling the stories of regional Australia, its
people, communities, history and traditions. An award-winning rural journalist and communicator, she grew up on a small farm near Mount Gambier, which has been in the family since the 1860s. In 2006 Liz walked away from corporate life, as a director of a leading national public relations agency, to write books. Her leap of faith was rewarded two years later with The Blue Ribbon Cookbook, which became a surprise best-seller. Capturing the stories and traditions of South Australian country shows and show cooks, it even took her to Paris where it won a Gourmand World Cookbook Award. Since then she has written two national best-sellers, Women of the Land and The Australian Blue Ribbon Cookbook, as well as Almost an Island: The Story of Robe, about her favourite season town on the windswept Limestone Coast. Today Liz lives in the Adelaide Hills, juggling a busy writing career with travelling Australia to visit the places and meet the people that inspire her writing. City Girl Country Girl will be officially launched by the author Liz Harfull at Mil Lel Hall on Tuesday, March 29, at 7.30pm. RSVP to sales@lizharfull.com or Collins Booksellers (08)8724 9068

ADVERTORIAL - JETTS FITNESS LEADING THE WAY
KUNG FU PANDA 3 - MARCH 24 Continuing his “legendary adventures of awesomeness”, Po must face two hugely epic, but different threats: one supernatural and the other a little closer to his home.
Jetts Fitness was the first 24 hour gym to open its doors in Mount Gambier and the firsts keep coming, with Jetts Mount Gambier now unveiling its new look gym, complete with state-of-the-art cardio equipment upgrades – the first of it kind in Australia. The redevelopment of the Mount Gambier gym was unveiled last week, with Jetts Mount Gambier running its “Open Week” from March 14-26, to showcase the new space. The gym is now a Gen3 gym, upgrading from a two part gym to now being a three part gym, with a stretching area being added to the already established, and also upgraded, cardio and weights areas. The stretching area is basically for pre and post workout stretching, while the redeveloped Jess Mount Gambier gym also now has an emphasis on one of the emerging trends in the fitness industry - functional training – which includes push, pull, flexion, extension, hinge, lunge and jumping exercises.. “Functional training
is pretty big right now,” Jetts Mount Gambier franchisee Kieran Ashby said. Basically functional training focuses on weight bearing activities and core stabilising work and Jetts Mount Gambier is thrilled to now have a designated area to allow members to add functional training to their weight and cardio routines. Ro celebrate the opening of the new look gym, Jetts Mount Gambier was offering memberships, without any sign up or card fees, during the Open Week , to the first 50 new members to sign up to experience the Jetts difference, and as of this week there is only a handful left so you better be quick. Jetts is also promoting Mates Rates – a deal for people who sign up with a friend (see ad page 31). “The Mates rates deal has come out of research that show people re 40 percent more likely to get better results if they train with a friend,” Kieran said. “We want to promote people training together.” Drop into Jetts Fitness Mount Gambier today and sign up to be part of the Jetts fitness revolution.

SOFTBALL State representatives make their mark JENNA BURSTON Jenna Burston was another key local player that made her mark in the South Australian Under 17 team, alongside Georgia Hood. Jenna had an impact both in the field and the batting box over the course of the championships, where the team finished third. In the opening 2-3 loss to Queensland, Jenna played third base and was in the action, being involved in four plays the resulted in outs as the ball just kept finding its way down her third base line. In the round two victory over the ACT, it was with the bat that Jenna did the talking with two hits, including a clever sacrifice bunt. In South Australia’s round three 3-13 loss to New South Wales, Jenna was able to get on base and eventually score for the Croweaters, Jenna was rested for the start of the clash with Victoria but was called into action in both the field and batting box, with SA eventually winning 5-3. Jenna was again able to showcase her short batting game. The SA girls took on Victoria again in the play-offs and won a nailbiter 7-6.Jenna was again the starting third base, also picking up a hit, while her aggressive base running was also a feature, but a 0-5 loss to
CAR WASH DETAILERS
Queensland relegated SA to a third place finish. Jenna took a strong catch and was involved in another play for the out at first. TAYLOR WILSMORE Taylor Wilsmore was in her second successive season as part of the South Australian Under 19 State softball team, with the SA team entering the 2016 championships as defending champions. Taylor wasted no time having an impact with a safehit in the round one clash with Western Australia, where SA eventually went down 1-4. It was a tough tournament for the defending champions in what is a super strong competition. Taylor was often called upon to be a pinch hitter for the SA line-u with her ability to powerfully strike the ball and place it just where the team needs. Taylor also proved to be a reliable infielder, mainly fielding at first and third base. AMBER HOOD Amber Hood was in her first year as an Under 19 player, having graduated from Under 17 ranks in 2015. She played the majority of the tournament as catcher, with her softball smarts a feature of the championships as she proved a valuable on field leader. Amber also spent some time in the outfield during the championships. Despite starting the championships with a 1-4 loss to Western Australia, Amber was well and truly in the action, twice throwing out adventurous base runners, who foolishly took on Amber’s strong, pin point arm. Amber had an impact with the bat as well with nine safehits for the tournament, but it was her ability to call in her pitchers, take a handful of impressive foul territory catches, as well as throwing out a number of base runners looking to steal that clearly caught the eye of national selectors, with the 18 year old selected, alongside sister Georgia, in the Australian Youth Squad.

FEATURE I ROSE GROWER’S COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER The Wagner’s Rose Nursery Open Day has firmly made its mark on the Limestone Coast calendar, with the event growing in popularity every year. It provides locals and visitors with the chance to learn more about roses, listen to tips by rose grower and owner Brian Wagner, and view the hundreds of varieties on offer at one of Australia’s leading rose nurseries. The family friendly day – to be held in April at the Nursery on the outskirts of Kalangadoo –will this year be held as a fundraiser for the Penola Primary School, with students and parents throwing their support behind the event. “Last year we had such amazing participation from the Penola Primary School, with each class presenting a stall of their own, including a cake stand, sausage sizzle and drinks van, whilst the Parent Club helped out on the gate and with car-parking,” said nursery owner Brian Wagner. “Coupled with the support from local producers including Kalangadoo Organic with their apples and apple juice, Limestone Larder’s locally grown food and Gala’s Middle Eastern food, it truly is a community event that everyone seems to enjoy,” he said. Following a similar format to its highly successful Open Day a year ago, when more than 500 people came through the gates, Brian Wagner will again host ‘continual’ tours throughout the day in a relaxed paddock setting, whilst also being on hand to answer questions and provide information on rose growing. The wholesale nursery - now offering online retail sales - will offer magnificent views of more than 600 varieties of roses in bloom, with early April being an ideal
time for the rose display. It will be the first chance for visitors to see the new 2016 rose releases, while also viewing a large selection of yearling and two year old rose bushes. To add to the food stalls available on the day with be a wood-fired pizza food truck, along with Coonawarra’s Grey-Smith Wines who will provide wine for sale by the glass and bottle. A selection of potted plants and bunches of roses will be available for sale, and there’ll be plenty
of entertainment to keep the kids busy including a jumping castle (weather permitting) for the younger ones. Wagner’s Rose Nursery grows more than 600 rose varieties for the wholesale market – spread over 50 hectares - and has recently entered the online retail market which is gaining popularity with its ‘Paddock to Porch’ service. It distributes a monthly e-newsletter to a growing customer base, and continues to build on its strong reputation as one of Australia’s leading rose suppliers to Garden Nurseries. “Whether you’re a keen rose grower, a novice or even if you just enjoy looking at roses, the Open Day will have something for everyone – come along, have a bite to eat, something to drink and just enjoy a stroll amongst the roses,” Brian enthuses. “We are really pleased to be able to support the community who supports us,” he said. The “Rose Nursery Open Day” will be held on Sunday, April 3, from 10am to 4pm, with an entry of $8 per adult and children under 15 free. Visitors are recommended to wear enclosed footwear. Wagner’s Rose Nursery is on 20 Koorine Road, Kalangadoo, just outside Kalangadoo on the Kalangadoo –Millicent Road, 200 metres from Koorine homestead.

Gringer is missing his tail, but don’t worry, he hasn’t let that slow him down. With his friendly, playful and affectionate nature, Gringer would make an ideal companion pet for a single or family household. If you think you can give Gringer a second chance at a safe and loving home, contact the SEAWL on (08)8723 9133 during opening hours or visit www.seawl. thelimestonecoast.com.au for more information about the adoption process.

GET INTO THE GARDEN Autumn is a brilliant time to get out into the garden as temperatures are milder making it more comfortable for both plants and gardeners. Autumn is the new spring for gardening. Soil is still warm enough for root growth, so if plants have enough nutrients and water they will thrive this season. There’s lots of wonderful things for green (and not so green) fingers to do in autumn, including growing delicious herbs and vegies, planting new trees and shrubs and preparing for winter and spring, whether you have the largest space or just a few pots. Cool season vegies like baby leaf spinach, silverbeet, baby beetroot, onions, broad beans, spring onions, kale, lettuce and cauliflower are ideal to plant now. Fragrant and versatile herbs including coriander, rocket, Italian parsley and chives will thrive and can be used in a variety of dishes including salads, stir fries and soups. New shrubs and trees in autumn shades of red and orange look beautiful in the garden and can be purchased from your local nursery. Plant containers and hanging baskets with flowers like winter viola, pansies, lobelia, carnations, sweet peas, Flanders red poppy, alyssum and calendula to brighten up outdoor spaces. Organise garden beds for planting spring flowering bulbs like hyacinths and daffodils and your vegie patch by enriching the soil with organic fertiliser.

FEATURE I STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR KITCHEN
COMING SOON At all good newsagents
Organise • Tired of forgetting what’s hidden at the back of the pantry? Give your pantry a design overhaul with some of the latest storage products. Some of the best include rolling and sliding shelves that draw dry goods right out to you, two- and three-tier shelving units that can double your usable pantry space, over-the-doors hooks and rails, and baskets that clip onto the bottom of shelves. Pull-out pantries • If you don’t have space for a walk-in pantry, consider installing a pull-out pantry within your cabinetry that takes up minimal space and makes it easy to access dry goods from both sides. Lighting • Don’t forget to install proper lighting so that you can see the entire contents of your pantry at a glance. You can buy inexpensive battery-operated LED sensors lights from Ikea that emit very little heat and are therefore safe around food. The lights switch on automatically when you open the door and switch off when you close it, so no wasted power. Cabinetry storage • The latest trend is for overhead cupboards combined with fully-extending, base-level drawers units. These extra-deep drawers are used to store and organise everything from plates, cutlery and dry food, and gliding or soft-closing mechanisms. Hide clutter • Banish clutter from the benchtop by tucking everyday
appliances such as the kettle and toaster behind sliding doors or inside discreet breakfast nooks (make sure you have enough properly located electrical sockets). Consider a folding dishrack that can be tucked out of sight when not in use. Utilise space • Make better use of awkward corner cabinets by installing pull-out corner cupboard systems, which bring the entire contents of the unit into view when you open the door. Drawer storage • Save time scrambling through drawers for that elusive utensil by adding drawer organisers and dividers to all your kitchen drawers. Find inexpensive drawer inserts at Howards Storage World and Ikea. Look for inserts that are modular and expandable to fit your drawer size and requirements exactly and don’t forget non-slip drawer inserts that keep the contents of your drawers secure. Shelf storage • Boost your kitchen storage space with a built in or freestanding shelving unit, and take it right from floor to ceiling to make the best use of space. Popular options include timber, stainless steel or frostedglass fronted shelving units. Store items used frequently between knee and eye height, and those things used less often at the top and bottom of units. Vertical storage In a space-starved kitchen make the most of vertical space by installing
wall-mounted storage such as racks, magnetic rails and tall, and slimline cupboards into those unused areas of the kitchen such as corners. Fix a rail with kitchen pegs above the splashback to hold everything from utensils and the paper towel holder to the spice rack, which helps keep your benchtop clear. A wallmounted magnetic knife rack keeps knives out of reach of little fingers and within easy reach for the cook. Hooks over the kitchen door, inside the pantry door or under the sink are the perfect spot for tea towels and aprons. Small storage • Don’t forget to find a home for all the little things that can quickly clutter up your benchtop. Clear plastic containers allow you to organise and label your dry food and leftovers with ease, as well as keep tabs on how much you’ve got left. Square, stackable containers make the best use of space.
