COOK’S REPLICA VESSEL TO VISIT PORTLAND Sail the high seas on Captain Cook’s replica vessel the HMB Endeavour next month in Portland. The Australian built vessel, which is one of the world’s most accurate maritime replicas, will visit Portland Trawler Wharf from March 19 to 24 as part of a southern tour which includes visits to Port Lincoln and Adelaide. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the public were invited to step on-board to explore and experience the 18th century vessel. “This vessel is essentially a floating museum providing an exact snapshot of how Captain Cook and his crew lived on-board in the late 1700s,” he said. “It is like stepping back in time with mess deck on board illustrating where the sailors lived, ate and slept as they became the first people to chart Australian waters. “People will also see a replica cabin illustrating where botanist Joseph Banks and his scientists documented our rare botanical specimens on their journeys along the east coast. “The HMB Endeavour crew will also be on-hand to answer questions and explain what it is like to sail the majestic vessel.” The Endeavour will be open to the public on Saturday, March 19, from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, March 20, from 2pm to 5pm,

and from Monday, March 21, to Thursday, March 24, from 9.30am to 4pm. All children must be taller than 90cm and accompanied by an adult to go on-board. Following the Portland visit the vessel will return to its Sydney base where it is accommodated at the Australian National Maritime Museum. Tickets are still available to join the sailing crew at sea with tickets available for the Port Lincoln to Portland leg from March 10 to 18 and Portland to Sydney from March 25 to April 6. To learn more, or to book a ticket, visit www.anmm. gov.au. To track the Endeavour’s movements along the south west coast next month visit www. marinetraffic.com and search for HMB Endeavour.

FLORAL ART DISPLAY RETURNS Following the success of the event last year, the Millicent Floral Art and Garden Club is holding another Floral Display on Friday, March 4, 1pm to 3.30pm, and Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6, 10am to 3.30pm. The display is open to the public at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Hall, Sixth Street, Millicent. Admission is $5 which includes morning or afternoon tea. Children under 12 will be admitted free and a basket of gardening products is the raffle prize. More than 40 arrangements, thanks to the hard and creative work of the 10 members of the club in novice (beginners), intermediate and open classes will be on display. Fresh, dried, artificial flowers and horticultural materials will be used along with recycled materials. The arrangements will not be judged although being worked to comply with show conditions. The public will be able to vote for their favourites, with

prizes being awarded to the three most popular arrangements. A feature of the display will be a floor design titled My Country, by Anne Ashby. Anne is the club’s instructor and a qualified judge who has had great success with her designs at local, State and interstate shows. Those who attended last year’s display were stunned by the variety and quality of the arrangements. The Millicent Floral Art and Garden Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month, 10am to 2.30pm, at the Presbyterian Church Hall and extends an invitation to anyone in the Limestone Coast area to come along. The first two sessions are free. Please telephone Sue Pappin (08)8733 2275 or Chris Gurney (08)8734 4086 for further information.

punctuality. The next thing they’ll have is a sign telling us to put more effort into our handwriting when signing forms to make sure it’s clearly legible. Thankfully after my hour of reading the sign and eighteen month old New Ideas, Mr Doctor decided he could spare me three minutes. When I say three minutes, I literally mean three minutes. He’d kept me sitting there for over an hour and he then took three minutes to decide to invite me back for an invasive procedure between Saturn and Neptune. I just don’t get doctors wanting to put objects in holes that are meant only as out holes, not as in holes. There’s got to be a better way of doing that, doesn’t there? Apparently they’re going to sedate me so that’s a small mercy. What would it be like if I was conscious for that? Can you imagine that small talk as someone fiddles around at the back door. And getting back to that eighteen month old New Idea business, considering it costs me eighty dollars for three minutes of his time,he’s making $1600 an hour. Surely he could have current magazines and maybe something I’d be interested in. What about a nice basketball magazine? To be honest there should be masseuses in the waiting room and a barista whipping up hot beverages. I’m at a point where I think I’m going to start visiting a vet for my medical needs. I’ve always found them much more punctual and I seem to be able to

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DOCTOR DOCTOR... by Robbie Tansel was at the doctors recently. On the wall they had a sign that said, “A large number of patients have been arriving late for their appointments recently. Due to this situation we have had to adjust our policy. If you are late for your appointment we can no longer guarantee that we will be able to fit you in for another appointment on the day of your original appointment as it inconveniences other patients.” I sat and read that sign for just over an hour after my appointment was due to start. I’ve got to say it did seem a little hypocritical to be lecturing me and other patients about our

get an appointment on the day I call, rather than a week from Monday. Their bedside manner is much better too. Mind you, I’d find it much more pleasant treating a cute puppy than some coughing, spluttering, grizzling human. From what I understand the drugs at the vet are significantly better too. The only negative I can see with vets is they take their patient’s temperature anally. Like I said, that’s an out hole. Doctors are responsible for one of the stupidest questions that is ever asked. Whenever I visit a doctor they start the appointment by greeting me and asking me how I am. How am I supposed to respond to that? How am I? “I’m fantastic. I often come to the doctor when I feel good so I can sit in a waiting room for an exceedingly long time with sick people while reading old magazines.” How do they think I am? Clearly I am not well. That’s kind of the absolute fundamental of their job. People are coming to see you because they are not good. At least when I go to the dentist and they’re sticking a variety of tools and half their arm in my mouth while causing me excruciating pain and making small talk, there’s a television on the roof. I really should join a gym or something to look after my health. If you know a good vet, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

CASH INJECTION FOR LOCAL TOURISM PROJECTS Tourism in Barker will receive a boost with the announcement of $175,000 in funding under the Australian Government’s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Programme. Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP welcomed the announcement and said the investment in tourism infrastructure would help attract more visitors to the local area and provide an even better traveller experience. “It’s great to see $175,000 going towards the completion of the ‘Cave Loop Trail’ at Naracoorte. This work includes a walking path between the below ground cave network and the planning and design for the upgrade of the Victoria Fossil Cave car park and cave entry precinct,” Mr Pasin said. “The funds are being provided through the Australian Government’s Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure program which provides South Australia with $3.99 million to be invested in local projects over four years.” Minister for Tourism and International Education, Senator Richard Colbeck, said the projects would drive demand and improve the quality of tourism infrastructure in South Australia “The Federal Government is providing $43.1 million over four years to the states and territories for their tourism infrastructure needs through the Tourism DemandDriver Infrastructure Programme,” Minister Colbeck said. “Projects will help the industry to meet Tourism 2020 targets to ensure businesses remain sustainable and profitable into the future.”

Sharon Tuffnell’s Relay for Life team has a name that sums up how the nine member team expects to feel after the 19 hour fundraiser – Cirque de Sore Legs. “After 19 hours of walking we assume we’ll have very sore legs, Sharon said. The group has committed to wearing circus themed costumes with bandaged legs, so they should be easy to spot. It is a family team, that hasn’t been part of the Limestone Coast Relay for Life, since the inaugural event, when they formed to honour family members who have suffered from various cancers, with the team being called Rev it Up For A Cure. “We have lost loved ones, but also have survivors and carers as part of our team, Sharon said. Now the group has reunited and focussed heavily on fundraising. “We’ve had barbeques at Bunnings, Coles and Masters, Sharon said. “And party plan days and high tea. They also did a succulent drive with fresh produce for sale, as well, at the Mount Gambier Library Market. “It doesn’t matter if a team does big or small events it’s about the end goal, raising money for Cancer Council SA, Sharon said. That being said, the team still expects to hit the $5000 mark with its fundraising. The Cirque de Sore Legs team believes the Relay for Life is all about celebrating. “It’s about celebrating the fundraising, Sharon said. “It’s about celebrating the survivors and thinking about those that are not here. Sharon said the support from the Relay for Life committee was also critical, assisting with promotion of events via social media and other outlets. The generosity of the Mount Gambier community, while not surprising, was still overwhelming for Sharon and her team. “Fundraising in Mount Gambier is not hard, Sharon said, “When it’s for a good cause and a genuine cause, it’s not hard work. I think community mindedness is so important. We are so grateful to everyone who has supported our team.

Pictured above - The Cirque de Sore Legs team consists of Sharon Tuffnell, John Kilsby, Hayden Tuffnell, Shannen Tuffnell, Maxine Tuffnell, Maree Thompson, Kristen Geddes, Emily Geddes and Sophie Geddes.

With aged care and accounting under her belt, but feeling the pull of the dream of working for herself to provide that so often elusive work/life balance, mother of three and wife Peggy Weistra, came up with a plan. As most of us would rather hand the responsibility of cleaning over to someone else, Peggy went full steam ahead and realised her business ownership dream by establishing Scrub-a-Dub. Scrub-a-Dub allows you to not only hand your cleaning requirements over to an expert team, but to a team that gets the job done in the most eco-friendly way possible. Christy Radford has fast become one of the region’s most sought after photographers, and with her relaxed, creative and personalised style, it’s easy to see why. She has her eye on a new project at the moment as she looks to develop the contemporary portraiture side of her business. “I really want to empower women by taking gorgeous, candid photos, capturing what makes them beautiful,” Christy said. “I am teaming up with Katie Fox so we can create a look that makes women feel the very best they can about themselves and capture that image forever.” Bringing five years experience to the photographic business, Christy loves the chance to capture people’s memories and being a part of some of the most special moments in their lives. McCourts Garden Centre & Que Sera

Christine Agnew & Maureen Boyton

Christine and her team at McCourts Garden Centre like to offer the full experience of a one stop shop for your garden and home. It has always been a treasure trove of garden needs and giftware, but since Margie (formerly from Budz Florist) joined the team in July last year as the in store florist it has blossomed even more. Specialising in weddings, special occasions and events, Margie can also make an arrangement whilst you wait. Having a florist blends perfectly with the garden centre business offering wedding hire and a gift registry. The team of professional horticulturists at McCourts Garden Centre can also help you with plant choice, garden design ideas and plant health information. When you visit make sure you take the time to browse through the gift and homewares and fashion section. There is always something new to see. The experience of McCourts also blends perfectly with Que Sera Courtyard Cafe. Maureen Boyton, the owner of Que Sera,

is no stranger to the fast pace of cafe life. She previously owned a cafe in the main street of Millicent for six years, until deciding to have a break for a while. That was until the offer of running the cafe at McCourts garden centre was too good to say no. Maureen is loving being back in business and offering a healthy tranquil environment for people to have a locally roasted Mikro coffee and breakfast or lunch. Having homemade cakes and using home grown vegetables is also a priority. As is making sure there are healthy, tasty, well balanced meals as an option. They can also cater for all your dietary needs. With each change of the season, you will find tempting selections that take advantage of new produce. Que Sera is available for group bookings and like McCourts is open seven days a week.

Salts of the Earth

Cathy Beckman

Coming from a background in beauty therapy and massage I have always had an interest in natural products and therapies. After working from a home based business for many years, I stumbled across Salts of the Earth quite by accident . It appealed to me as something that could help so many people in our area to help them get relief from respiratory and skin conditions, sinus, and hay fever, as well as general colds and flu, croup, emphysema and much more. Salt therapy enhances sleep, as well as sports recovery and performance. After doing a lot of research I believed that this was the next phase in my career (even though I wasn’t looking for a change at the time). My husband ,Paul and I proceeded to buy the franchise and brought it to Mt Gambier in November of last year, being the first franchise to open in SA. Since opening, we have helped many people of all ages to get relief from many conditions and it makes it all worth while when we are making a difference in so many lives with this natural complementary therapy that has been around for hundreds of years. I feel very passionate about what we can offer the community and am excited about this next phase in my life - Cathy Beckman 1/131 Commercial St East, Mt Gambier• Ph: (08)8725 6112 • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SOTEMtGambier/

Louise Agnew

Louise Agnew has been passionate about art since she was a child, having being commissioned for artworks before her adulthood even began. She has also had a passion for helping people, which led to her tertiary study of Psychology and Social Work in Adelaide, followed by working locally in Mount Gambier as a Mental Health Therapist. Louise’s merging of backgrounds has resulted in a love of photographing people. It may be the way a newborn clutches to her mother’s chest, a toddler’s giggle, a sneaky kiss between lovers, the innocence of a child or the excitement of a graduate. It is Louise’s aim to help people feel most at ease during her photography sessions, to deliver candid, natural, raw emotion and connection whilst producing a flattering, classic image to her customers. Louise loves to shoot in the natural light, however is currently building a photography studio at her home. As previously reported, the talented softballer has been named in the Australian Youth squad, alongside older sister Amber Hood, and won the batting trophy at the Under 17 National Championships, when she was an integral part of the South Australian team that finished third. It was her performance at this event that caught the eye of national selectors. She opened the tournament, as expected on the mound, in the first round clash with Queensland. South Australia batted first and Georgia started the tournament with a safehit, and she was then in the play in the field for the next two digs as she not only shut out the Queensland batters but also made a couple of plays herself. Such is her reputation, Georgia was intentionally walked next time at bat, before she again secured a safehit at the top of the eighth. South Australian ended up losing in a tiebreak with Georgia pitching three strike outs for the match. In game two, against the ACT, Georgia started at centrefield, but after the ACT scored twice in the opening dig, she was soon back on the mound. She pitched two strike outs

and had two safehits, including a triple, as SA recorded its first win. New South Wales was the next opponent with Georgia playing centrefield and first base during the one sided 3-13 loss. Georgia started the clash against Victoria at centrefield but by the bottom of the third was reinstated as pitcher. Georgia had three safehits and six strike outs in the critical 5-3 victory. SA then backed up again against Victoria in the three versus four play off final, starting as pitcher and opening with a strike out. It was another fine game from the former Warriors star, as she completed five strike outs and picked up two safehits, one being a three bagger, as well as batting in a run with a sacrifice to right field, as SA advanced to play Queensland for a spot in the title decider. It was a tough ask for the SA line-up and while Georgia did claim two strikeouts, SA had to settle for third after the 0-5 loss. Next week’s Lifestyle1 will feature Imogen Walker & Jenna Burston.

Bordertown’s Maisie Nankivell is her deputy, making for a strong South East showing in the leadership group. North Gambier’s Sienna Allen is also part of the 2016 line-up.

POPULAR SMALL BUSINESS WORKSHOPS RETURN Learn how to take your business to the new digital age and improve your marketing in a series of workshops in the Glenelg Shire this autumn. Small Business Victoria is returning to the region over the next three months, presenting informative sessions aimed at helping small operators to grow their business profiles and markets. The first workshop, Your Business in a Digital World, at the Portland Business Hub (former Sandilands building) on March 15, will enable business owners to make informed decisions about the right online tools for their business. This is followed by an Understanding Marketing short workshop on April 27 in Heywood and session focused on developing an online strategy on May 18 in Casterton. A further two workshops will be held in August in celebration of the Small Business Festival. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said council had sought feedback from last year’s participants to ensure the workshops catered for business expectations and needs. “All of the workshops booked out in 2015 so I urge people to secure their place early to avoid disappointment.” To book email smallbusinessinfo@ glenelg.vic.gov.au or call (03)5522 2326. MOTOR - MAZDA & TOYOTA STAND OUT AT CAR AWARDS

OUT & ABOUT

Judges have crowed the Mazda CX-3 Maxx as the pick of the bunch for 2015 and Toyota has got back into the award winning car design game, as announced today through the Australia’s Best Cars awards. ABC Chief Judge, and RAA Senior Manager Mobility & Automotive Policy, Mark Borlace said the Mazda CX-3 Maxx won the ‘Best Small 2WD SUV under $35,000’ category as well as the ‘Judges’ Choice’ award. “Australians can’t get enough of the small SUV at the moment,” said Mr Borlace. “Local vehicle sales dipped 2% in 2014 but this relatively new segment soared 30%, and industry observers forecast that this is only going to continue, with one in 10 new vehicle sales in 2020 expected to be a small 2WD SUV. “During the past 12 months, a flood of popular makes have entered this segment but the Mazda’s CX-3 Maxx has outshone them in its first year.” The Mazda was consistently strong across nearly every judging category for depreciation, performance and handling, environment, seating comfort, ergonomics, build and finish, braking, and smoothness and quietness. The Judges’ Choice award is not necessarily presented to the fastest, the biggest or even the most expensive vehicle – it has to be good value for money, safe, innovative, and drive well. it has to be the best all-round package. “Another noticeable return to the awards in 2015 is Toyota with the HiLux SR5,” said Mr Borlace. “In the two years we’ve included 4x4 dual-cab utes in our testing program, there has only been one winner, and it hasn’t been the HiLux – although new vehicles sales data has told a different story. “The Toyota HiLux is loved by fleet buyers and has been the sales champion in the category for more than a decade, but it’s never really stacked up when we put it through our rigorous testing program – until this time. “The new, eighth generation HiLux is a significant improvement over the old model.” It has a new 2.8L 4-cyl turbo-diesel engine, better performance, lower fuel consumption, seven-inch touch-screen multimedia system with satnav, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, as well as a steering system which gives it a car-like feel. “All of the 15 winning vehicles have performed the best in their respective categories against lots of competition,” said Mr Borlace. “These awards aim to influence the new car market by challenging brands to continually lift their game in terms of safety, performance and affordability standards. “The judges have a very difficult task of narrowing down the 45 finalists to 15 winners, but these awards will help motorists when it comes to buying a new car.” For more information, visit www. australiasbestcars. com.au
