Taking care of all your beauty needs There was never any doubt in Candice Merrett’s mind that she was going to do something in the beauty industry. She has been doing her own and her friend’s make up for years and it was only a matter of time before she moved full time into the industry and actually earn money doing what she loves. She left school in 2012 and immediately enrolled to study to be a beauty therapist, which she did the following year, while also working in the industry to start racking up that all important hands on experience. In 2014, Candice (pictured below left) continued working in the industry

while completing her Certificate IV and in March last year she set up her business at Georgy’s Hair Design. Candice offers the full array of beauty treatments and services. From a deep cleansing, relaxing facial to a luxurious manicure or pedicure, complete with the finishing touch of Shellac polish, Candice can provide everything you need to feel that much better about yourself. There is also tinting, waxing, tanning, paraffin wax treatments and massages on offer, as well as special occasion make up, which Candice is also happy to do at the location of your choice as you get ready for your wedding
day or other special life event. Candice uses Clarins for all her skincare treatments, and also Dermalogica, focussing strongly on the quality and natural based products provided by those two leading suppliers. The 20 year old is also keen to continue to develop her skills and stay abreast of new techniques, services, products and beauty trends so she can offer her Limestone Coast clients cutting edge service. Teeth whitening is the latest service on Candice’s beauty menu, and part of her always looking to find new services to offer her clients, and it is certainly proving popular. The 45 minute treatment, includes
a thorough consultation and then a pain-free 20 minute treatment that includes a cold LED light while the treatment does its work inside a mouthguard. You can make your next appointment with Candice by calling the salon direct on (08) 8725 5835. She works Wednesday and Thursday from 9am-9pm and from 9am-2pm on Saturdays but is also flexible and can offer appointments at other times, depending on her clients’ needs. For more information contact Candice direct on 0419 387 094.

LOCAL A warm welcome for refugees
AT THE GALLERY The AMAZING Adventures of Dr Mayhem & The Chonga Barz • RIDDOCH ART GALLERY, MOUNT GAMBIER • January 30 – March 27 • Matt Sheehy & Anthony Hamilton share thier art with the community.
DRYCLEANERS
Southern Grampians Shire Council has put pen to paper in an effort to make refugees feel welcome in the shire in signing a declaration of the Refugee Welcome Zone. Council resolved to sign the Refugee Welcome Zone declaration—an initiative led by the Refugee Council of Australia, at the November 2015 meeting. The innovative program aims to engage local governments to enable refugees to feel welcome in local communities. Southern Grampians Shire Mayor Cr. Peter Dark said the Refugee Welcome Zone was eagerly adopted by Council and was the next step for Council in its ongoing advocacy for community inclusion. “I am extremely pleased to have signed the declaration of the Refugee Welcome Zone today Mayor Dark said. “Council’s adoption of the Refugee Welcome Zone aligns with our strategic objectives to promote diversity and inclusiveness and to encourage the inclusion of members of all cultures including indigenous communities in the social and economic life of the Shire.A Refugee Welcome Zone is a local government area which has made a commitment – in spirit – to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community. There has been strong support in the local community toward this decision, with both the Dunkeld Refugee & Asylum Seeker Support Group and the Hamilton & District Rural Australians for Refugees Group approaching Council.
Council, through its Community Inclusion committee, will continue to work collaboratively with these groups of passionate individuals on this issue as it will provide a good foundation to build and further develop the region’s capacity to be multicultural and inclusive. “Signing this declaration is a very positive step toward inclusiveness and diversity in our shire. The plight of many refugees is incomprehensible to many of us living in Australia. This is all about saying we are glad you’re here. Thank you for coming here and wanting to be a part of our wonderful community, Mayor Dark said.
BOOK OF THE WEEK SALT CREEK • LUCY TRELOAR Cut adrift from the polite society they were raised to be part of, Hester and her siblings make connections where they can: with the few travellers that pass along the nearby stock route - among them a young artist, Charles - and the Ngarrindjeri people they have dispossessed.
MOVIE OF THE WEEK
DIRTY GRANDPA • COMING SOON Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) is one week away from marrying his boss’s uber-controlling daughter, putting him on the fast track for a partnership at the law firm. However, when the straight-laced Jason is tricked into driving his foul-mouthed grandfather, Dick (Robert De Niro), to Daytona for spring break, his pending nuptials are suddenly in jeopardy. Ultimately, on the wildest journey of their lives, “dirtyâ€? Grandpa and his uptight grandson discover they can learn from one another and form the bond they never had.

ADVERTORIAL Business celebrates first anniversary PETstock and PETstock VET Mount Gambier are celebrating their first birthday. The business, which opened in December 2014, is locally owned and operated by the Priddle family. Jim and Janelle (pictured) form part of the expert store team, while Teresa and her highly qualified team operate the VET practice. Teresa explains how the VET practice is the first of its kind to be established by PETstock in regional Australia. “We’re set up to perform surgical procedures and house pets for overnight stays if needed. The facility is state of the art and purpose built, offering a complete range of medical services including surgery, digital x-ray and dental. “Not to mention, we’re located right next door to the store which really makes us a one-stop-shop for all our customers’ pet care needs!” The store boasts a range of high quality services, including D.I.Y Dog Wash. The dog wash facilities are made to withstand the spray of water that comes from a good, strong wet-dog shake and include shampoo, conditioner, flea wash and a hair dryer. No appointments are necessary. For those dogs who need something a little extra, pet owners can book an appointment with the store grooming salon. Grooming expert, Bernie, runs the salon and is highly qualified and skilled in all areas of pet pampering. New pet parents can also take advantage of Puppy School classes which are conducted right in store. Over a five week course, puppy owners have the opportunity to learn how to teach their pup valuable life skills and basic obedience commands for a happy
life together. Store Manager Jim Priddle says that the entire Mt. Gambier team pride themselves on being industry experts. “Our team is highly trained in all areas of pet care. We’re dedicated to providing local pet parents with the very best advice on nutrition, behaviour and suitable products for their furry, feathery and scaly family members. “Bring your leashed buddy along for a visit! The Mt. Gambier team is proudly local and looking forward to welcoming all customers and their pets in store.” Mount Gambier is having family fun activities on Saturday, January 30, from 10am to 2pm. Everyone is invited to join the celebrations.

Wine, beef and grape-growers are among those enjoying the competitive advantage the trade agreement with Japan has delivered in the 12 months since it came into force. Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement or JAEPA had generated great enthusiasm and new levels of confidence among our exporters, with sales to Asia on the rise in a variety of commodities. “Since the agreement with Japan came into force on 15 January 2015, it has provided local businesses – large and small – with exciting new export opportunities, particularly those involved in agricultural commodity production,” Mr Pasin said. “Asia’s growing middle class is certainly developing a taste for Australia’s clean, green produce with export sales of fresh table grapes increasing more than ten-fold from $0.6 million to $6.5 million. “Sales of frozen shrimp and prawns to Japan have increased 90 per cent, while asparagus sales have seen a 41 per cent increase after the tariff was eliminated on day one of the agreement,” Mr Pasin said. Mr Pasin said export sales of bottled wine are up 11 per cent, fresh/ chilled beef is up 24 per cent, while shelled almond sales have increased more than ten-fold (from $0.4 million to $4.1 million), after the tariff was eliminated on entry-into-force. COLLECTED STUPIDITY Always look on the bright side of life... by Robbie Tansel When I’m having a bad day, I cheer myself up by thinking, “It could be worse. I could be a woman.” I’ve never been a woman but I get the feeling that it’s really hard work. I’ve had a long think about it and the only benefits I’ve come up with for being a woman is that you’re always right. What brought me to the conclusion that being a woman is difficult was watching Donna, my partner, get ready for a wedding recently. Getting ready for a wedding seems to require a similar amount of planning to if you wanted to build a bridge from Antarctica to the moon. It’s a similar type of challenge. For a woman getting ready for a wedding doesn’t even begin on the day. For a woman preparation begins at the time she finds out she will be attending the wedding. At this point her brain will automatically start pondering and panicking over what she will wear to the wedding. Immediately she will come to the conclusion that there is absolutely nothing in her wardrobe which is suitable. This is the complete opposite of a man who will be firmly of the opinion that any and every clothing item in his cupboard is perfectly fine.

Footy shorts, singlet, thongs; it doesn’t matter. After going out and spending a considerable amount of money on a new clothing item, on the wedding day the woman will put her new frock on and come to the conclusion that she looks terrible. It now doesn’t fit, is all wrong, doesn’t match her shoes, handbag or other accessories or is now too old. Has any woman ever put an outfit together and said, “Wow, I look perfect.” As if the basics of what a woman will wear aren’t enough of an issue, the selection of undergarments is a saga all of its own. Can the straps be seen? Should I wear some sort of body shaping garment? Will there be a visible underwear line around the buttocks? Men have this same line but for some reason it is only an issue when women have the line. Men couldn’t care less if half their buttocks is hanging out, in fact in some professions it is a fashion. Another issue that has to be sorted before the day of the wedding is deciding which areas of the body will keep hair and ensuring that hair is removed from other selected regions. I don’t enjoy removing hair from my face let alone seeking out countless other parts of my body to deal with. Having removed hair and exposed bare skin, it now needs to be ensured that the skin is lovely golden brown, or orange depending on how well it goes. I am very confident that I will never put myself through the torture that getting a fake tan must be. After spending time painting the body, women will then go and get someone to paint their finger and toe nails, or add little sparkly things if it takes their fancy. On the day further paint will be applied to the face and a large period of time will be spent fussing hair up, down and round and round.
Once again, no matter how much product is applied the final verdict will be that it looks terrible. Time will also be spent picking between accessories, and deciding which bag, shoes, purse, belt, earrings and necklace need to be selected. Just the amount of decisions that need to be made are giving me a headache. Women on average live four years longer than men in Australia. Unfortunately they average seventeen years of their life primping and preening for weddings and other social occasions. I’m convinced that one day people are going to look back on this period the way we look back on women getting tied into incredibly restricting corsets in the 1800s. I hope it’s soon. While Donna takes about an hour getting ready just on the wedding day, I am ready in under ten minutes and the majority of that is the three attempts it will take me to tie my tie to a suitable length. First time, ridiculously long and hanging around my knees. Second attempt ridiculously short and doesn’t cover my bulging belly. Third attempt, still no good so looks like I’m going casual and not wearing a tie. It is indeed a man’s world. If you’d like to tell me I’m wrong, because like I said you women are always right, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com
INDIGENOUS SCHOLARSHIPS ON OFFER Local indigenous youth are urged to apply for a Glenelg Shire Council 2016 Aboriginal Scholarship to assist with further study. Two scholarships are available in the annual program for Glenelg Shire based indigenous youth, aged 17 to 24, to pursue training beyond year 12 in the tertiary sector or a relevant Local Government position. Last year’s recipients Peter Saunders and Allira Maes, who both work at Portland-based DhauwurdWurrung Community Health Service, are realising their career ambitions as a result of the scholarship program. Peter completed a Certificate III in Business Administration whilst Allira is studying nursing and midwifery at South West TAFE. Peter said the scholarship provided him with “extra motivation” and confidence to complete his course, which had greatly improved his work skills. “I would encourage anyone else who is looking to enrol in study in the future to apply for one of these scholarships as the positive outcomes go far beyond the financial benefits,” Peter said. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the scholarship program was assisting to reverse this trend. “This program is helping to build successful career paths for countless Glenelg Shire youth by taking away the financial burden of completing further study,” Cr Oberlander said. “These scholarships are making a positive impact towards improving retention rates and giving local indigenous youth the confidence and support to follow their career aspirations here in the Glenelg Shire.” Recipients are encouraged to follow a training path that would support a Local Government field, such as environmental health, maternal and child health, local laws, aged care or horticulture. Scholarship applications opened on Monday and close 5pm on February 26. To learn more contact council’s community development manager Ian Moody on (03)5522 2220 or email imoody@glenelg.vic.gov.au.

TENNIS State titles for Mount Gambier players 16 & Under Boys Country Carnival Champions The annual Country Carnival tennis championships were again held at the Memorial Drive tennis courts in Adelaide with the Mount Gambier & District Tennis Association juniors being represented by both 16 and under and 14 and under boy’s teams. The Division 1, 16 and under boys team comprised of Patrick Mitchell, Jack Radley, Jordan Tucker and Ethan Schultz who, as the same team last year, were runners up, so this year were determined to go one better, which they did, taking the country carnival championship title in their division. The boys had an excellent championship winning 29 of their 36 sets played over six rounds. The quality of tennis played was excellent with the boys adapting their games to suit each of the grass, clay, synthetic and hard courts they played on. This division had a grand final format with their only loss during the minor rounds being to Adelaide Hills, who finished the minor rounds on top. The grand final saw the Mount Gambier boys playing this strong Adelaide Hills team again, but this time, under pressure, they turned around the result, winning four sets to two, to take out the championship title. The 14 and under boys team comprised Josh Dedonatis, Riley Burn, Cooper Hodge and Liam Dedonatis. These boys enjoyed a great experience and competition with many good wins and some close losses, ultimately finishing the competition in third place, which was a great effort considering two of the boys still have years to come in this age group. In the individual event played on the fifth day, Ethan Schultz backed up his success in the team’s event by taking out the 14 and under boys singles event. Jorja Mitchell enjoyed success playing in, and winning, the 10 and under girls individual event, playing some great tennis. In the doubles event, Josh Dedonatis and Riley Burn teamed up to win the 14 and under boys title. Also Patrick Mitchell and Jack Radley, who partnered in the 16 and under doubles event, finished runners up. Division 1 Women Country Carnival Champions With conditions in Mount Gambier much warmer than normal this summer, the Division 1 Women were well prepared for this year’s Country Carnival held at Memorial Drive in Adelaide. Temperatures ranged from 35 to 39 all week, and these young women showed great maturity on the court to take out the title for Mount Gambier for the first time since 1996. With the oldest player in the team being 21 years old, four of the five players weren’t even born the last time Mount Gambier won. Playing against teams from around the State, the team remained undefeated all week and only dropped a total of six sets. Madeline Watson, Laura Edwards, Chloe Watson, Sarah Edwards and Ashlea Edwards were all part of the winning combination. In the Men’s Division 1, Mount Gambier had two representative teams again this year and they were both extremely competitive. Mount Gambier Blue finished in third place and Mount Gambier Green in fourth, with a total of seven teams competing. Both teams had opportunities to take out the eventual winners Barossa/Gawler, both going down four sets to two. In the battle of the Mount Gambier sides, Mount Gambier Blue took out the match five sets to one. Andrew vandenHurk, Craig Watson, Ian Hopes, Matt Kasparian and Mitch Smart made up the Blue combination and Dylan Childs, Bradley Mitchell, Ross Bushell and Patrick Griffin were the Green team. The individual event was played on the last day of competition at Memorial Drive in muggy conditions. Mount Gambier Tennis Club player Andrew vandenHurk took out the Men’s Open Title, making it his sixth title in the last 13 years. VandenHurk won his first three matches in convincing style, before having to lift his game to another level defeating Alex Reinke from the Barossa Valley 6-4 in the final. After losing his second round match in the Men’s Open, local Uniting Church player Ian Hopes took out the consolation event, just to add to the success for Mount Gambier across the week.

MOTOR SPORT Madsen goes back to back in King’s Challenge
Local Sport GOLF SE Veterans kick off 2016 season at the sea Sixty veterans turned up at Kingston for their first game of the year earlier this month in fine, but very warm for the seaside, conditions. Thirty-seven points from Peter Walters took out the first division, with a four way countback for second from David Douglas on 36 and Wally Altschwager 36. Rumour has it that, on the 18th, David hit his ball out on to the highway, then after playing three off the tee, he went and sank a 60 footer for a six for two points. Talk about the luck of the Irish. Second division was won by Adrian Thiele with 39, from the indomitable Gus Petrowski, who survived a five way countback, ruling out Jimmy Hyland. The amount of countbacks was out of the ordinary. Nearest the pins were President Bruce and Michael Lyons, and the coveted Ross Orchard went to Brian Amos and Roy Mitchell, upholding a Beachport tradition. The next outing is at Robe on February 1.
New South Wales sprintcar legend Kerry Madsen has done what no driver since American Donny Schatz in 2002 and ‘03 has managed to do - claim back to back King’s Challenge titles at the Borderline Speedway. But Madsen managed the rare feat - only the second time a driver has successfully defended his title in the event’s 22 year history. Established in 1995 and with a prize purse of $10,000, the King’s Challenge is the premier stand alone event hosted by the Glenburnie track. Madsen took the title from four time winner Robbie Farr and David Murcott (third). The event attracts the cream of Australian and United States sprintcar talent. PHOTOS COURTESY OF STEVE RICE.

CRICKET Run feast at high school oval
Grant High School has been the place to be for players and spectators alike over the past fortnight with 894 runs scored over two days in the CrouchShield between Centrals and Kongorong. Not too many teams post a total of 343 and not only lose the match but lose by 208 runs. But that’s what happened. In week one of the two day fixture, Kongorong skipper Josh Smith posted an entertaining 231 as Kongorong posted a total of 343 from 60.2 overs. Smith cleared the boundary 11 times and also scored 22 fours in his astonishing innings. Scarily, Centrals passed the victory target of 344 in the 74th over for the loss of only three wickets, thanks in no small part to a stunning 269 from Craig Hicks (pictured). A stalwart of the Centrals club, and no stranger to big game performances, having scored a century and taken a five for in a Cox Bros. Shield title win four seasons ago, Hicks cracked 18 boundaries and 12 sixes as his side compiled 7/551 from its allocated 96 overs. The mammoth total was also pushed along by a quickfire century from Matthew Fatchen, who hammered three sixes and 11 fours on his way to 110. He combined with Hicks for a 273 run third wicket partnership.

Motor No relief at regional fuel pumps this holiday season
Learning to drive via snapchat
Fuel prices in regional South Australia continue to slip towards a poor rating in the latest results of RAA’s Regional Fuel Ratings. RAA Senior Analyst Chris West said many towns have not seen a sizable reduction in their fuel prices following the oil price slump. “Nearly half of all towns in our Regional Fuel Ratings got a Poor or Very Poor score in December,” said Mr West. “Bordertown achieved the highest rating in December of 3.4 out of 5, which gave them the chance to jump into first place, overtaking Renmark who had held top spot for the past two months.” Mount Gambier was the only other town to achieve a Fair rating, taking out second place with a score of 3 out of 5, with Renmark in third on 2.9. “We’ve received many complaints from regional motorists as they’ve watched oil prices fall, yet they haven’t seen any movement at their local service station for months now,” said Mr West. “Many country motorists are again missing out on legitimate savings of up to 6-8cpl at the pump, as the industry pockets it for itself, rather than passing it on to motorists. “And it’s behaviour we’re seeing in all corners of South Australia, with the worst offenders for petrol pricing in Whyalla, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Naracoorte, Victor Harbor and Coober Pedy. “Wholesale fuel prices continue to fall, so there’s no reason for these savings to be denied to country motorists.”
In a bid to reach out to learner drivers, RAA Driver Education is sharing the journey of one lucky South Australian student as they go from Ls to Ps via its Snapchat account. RAA put the call out to learner drivers via social media, asking them to audition to be RAA’s first Snapchat Star! After receiving more than 80 very creative entries, Heathfield High School student Serenna Williams has been selected as the winner. “Learning to drive can be a really daunting task for some young people,” said Ben Haythorpe, RAA Senior Manager Community Education. “Students will be able to follow Serenna’s journey via Snapchat and she can share with her peers some of the tips and tricks we teach her.” The competition was run entirely on Snapchat, with the winner being awarded enough driving lessons to get them from their L-plates to P-plates. “It’s certainly a unique way to connect with students, but we’ve had a really positive response so far” said Mr Haythorpe. “Students have been sending us snaps when they get their Ls or reach another significant driving milestone. “We’ll keep chatting with them too, posting useful driving tips and general motoring advice.” Statistics gained from this year’s Street Smart High attendees shows that 41 per cent of students will select the log book method, with only 22 per cent selecting the test option. The remaining 35 per cent of students surveyed were undecided at
Bordertown had the fairest petrol prices in December (3.6 out 5) followed by Port Lincoln (3.2), while Loxton and Renmark tied for third place (3.1). The fairest diesel prices were also in Bordertown (3.3 out of 5), followed by Keith (2.9) and Mount Gambier (2.8). Port Augusta again had the best LPG prices (4.8 out 5) followed by Mt Gambier (4.0) and Murray Bridge (3.9). the time. “Logbook is obviously a popular method because students can learn the driving essentials in a step-by-step nature, signing off each skill as they master it, and that’s what they’ll see Serenna doing,” said Mr Haythorpe. “But it’s clear plenty of students are unsure about which option to go with, so hopefully watching Serenna’s experience will make them feel more informed to make that decision.” From here, Serenna will take part in fortnightly driving lessons with RAA Driving Education, sending ‘snaps’ just prior to and after each of her lessons. “I’ve done a few hours of practise with my parents already, but I’m really looking forward to doing my logbook lessons with RAA,” said the Year 11 student. “I entered the competition because I want to learn to be a safe driver of course, but hopefully by sharing my story, it’ll help other teenagers see just what’s involved in learning to drive.” To follow RAA on Snapchat and to see Serenna’s journey from Ls to Ps, search for ‘streetsmarthigh’.
