Making fitness fun for kids ReadySteadyGoKids has enjoyed a successful first 12 months of operation, running classes in Mount Gambier, Millicent and Naracoorte and is hoping 2016 will be the year more families get involved in this physio-designed program to help keep kids active. Ebony Cunningham is the local coordinator of the program and she was thrilled with how the first term of classes went last year. “Whilst we have a strong sporting culture in the region, there was a distinct lack of organised sport programs for children at the pre-school level,” Ebony said. “I loved the ReadySteadyGoKids concept because it not only sparks a child’s interest in exercise and a healthy lifestyle but offers so many indirect benefits, such as assisting prepare a child for school readiness, being part of a team, improving self-confidence and developing a motivation to achieve – all
skills children can carry through and benefit from well into their schooling.” The families participating in the first term agree. “It was great to see so many of the kids improve their coordination and social skills – it was all about having fun and learning at the same time,” Ebony said. The ReadySteadyGoKids program is specifically tailored for children aged 2.5 to six years and aims to develop a lifelong love for physical activity in kids. ReadySteadyGoKids is currently run at more than 150 locations throughout Australia and classes cover the fundamentals of 10 different sports in a welcoming environment while developing age-appropriate motor skills. Soccer, athletics, tennis, basketball, hockey, rugby, Aussie rules footy, golf, cricket and T-ball are all part of the program. The energetic classes are specially designed to develop and enhance children’s gross and
fine motor skills in a supportive environment. Each class is aimed at building key social skills such as sportsmanship and teamwork whilst fostering a positive attitude towards exercise. “Children are motivated by the social interaction and the interest of trying a new sport, a new challenge,” she said. Classes are available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “We have also been fortunate enough to run classes at Montebello Community Kids and Tenison Woods College Poplar Program. ReadySteadyGoKids can also offer excursions to other kindergartens, early learning centres, playgroups and mothers’ groups as well as host birthday parties. Contact 1300 766 892 to enquire about the reasonable packages available. Classes for 2016 start next month. Testimonial “Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for offering a great opportunity for young children to become involved in the sporting environment. We had our trial day in Mount Gambier and I couldn’t have been more pleased with it all. My son had an absolute blast, and as soon as we walked out he asked if he could go again. Ebony was fantastic with the kids, you could see on their faces that they were all enjoying the activities. So thank you again Ebony, we will definitely be recommending this to everyone we know..”. A SNAPSHOT OF READY STEADY GO KIDS Delivering a combination of physical & emotional benefits, the Ready Steady Go Kids program is designed to build confidence & self-esteem, providing a platform of knowledge & boosting school readiness skills. Science-based foundation • Our program was designed by a paediatric physiotherapist & occupational therapist. It aims to enhance children’s gross & fine motor skills, encourage their continued participation in sports & prepare them for the early school years. All classes are held indoors • Rain, hail or shine - our classes are never cancelled in bad weather. With an indoor environment you can be certain that every class will always go ahead as scheduled. Multi-sports program • We teach 10 different sports which helps children develop a broad range of skills, builds a platform of sporting knowledge & the variety ensures continued interest in the program. Incorporating “soft-skills” • Our program incorporates basic counting & colour concepts, encourages team work & sportsmanship, builds social skills & develops listening skills and concentration. All of which improves your child’s preparation for school. Small class sizes • Classes generally contain no more than 12 children & have a 1:6 instructor to student ratio. This means more attention for your child & better learning outcomes. The “feel good factor” • Children develop greater self-confidence, enhanced selfesteem & a real sense of achievement, all of which shape their physiological wellbeing.

Lat last year, the 48th Army Cadet Unit conducted their end of year parade at the MacKenzie Army Training Depot, on Shepherdson Road, in Mount Gambier. The parade was commanded by Cadet Under Officer Sam Jenner, who completed his sixth and final year of his cadet career at the ceremony. Sam, who is also the 2016 Mount Gambier Young Citizen of the Year said cadets formed the strong foundations for the career path he was taking. “The experiences I have had and the amazing people I have met have played an invaluable role in helping me to achieve my goal of attending the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA),” Sam said. “The opportunities I have been given to develop my leadership skills under many great mentors along with the Army Cadet values of courage, initiative, respect and teamwork that they have instilled in me, are just two of the things I will always appreciate.” Sam has enlisted into the Army and has gained a highly sought after place at ADFA beginning on January 27 this year. Some of the adventures enjoyed by the cadets in 2015 included a six member contingent attended the Northern Territory Cadets Annual Field Exercise just outside Darwin; two highly successful weekend camps were held at Victor Harbor and Murray Bridge, while CDT Denham was chosen to represent South
Australia at the National Drill Team Competition in Adelaide. In October, the unit took part in a seven day Annual Field Exercise with 350 cadets from all of the South Australia at Murray Bridge, with six Mount Gambier cadets receiving awards in various categories. Ten cadets recently spent the first week of their Christmas holidays attending Junior and Senior Leaders promotion courses. The Australian Army Cadets is a national youth development program with the character and values of the Australian Army. Cadets participate in ceremonial parades, fieldcraft and navigation exercises as well as learning to use service firearms. The cadets have many opportunities to develop their leadership and teamwork skills in a fun and supportive environment. The unit currently has cadets who travel from Heywood, Millicent and Penola to parade each week. The 48th Army Cadet Unit is currently recruiting new members. Recruitment is open to all young people who are turning 13 years of age anytime in the year they enrol and have not reached 17 years of age. An information night for those wishing to join the unit will be held on Friday, February 26, at 7pm, at the Army Reserve Depot, Shepherdson Road. For further details please email 48acu@cadetnet.gov.au or phone LT (AAC) Rod Wewer on 0417 603 508.

LOCAL Producer turns presenter at new look ABC Former mornings producer Selina Green (pictured right), who made her name in radio working alongside long time, popular Morinings Show presenter Stan Thomson, is set to become the new voice of a revamped ABC South East program line-up, part of an ABC restructure. Selina’s banter with Stan was the highlight of many a Mornings program and she also had her time as an emergency presenter when circumstances dictated. She has been the brains behind the South East Mornings program since joining gthe ABC in 2008 and is set to make the movie to on air talent with the restructured local programming. Experienced regional journalist, editor and presenter, Stuart Stansfield, has been appointed as the new Chief of

Staff for ABC South East. The role was created as part of the development of ABC Regional – a new division within the Corporation which brings regional presenters, producers and reporters together as one team. Stuart has worked in the media for 33 years, including 16 years as an ABC regional reporter and editor, two years as producer of the ABC South East Mornings program and three years as the region’s breakfast show presenter. During his career he’s covered many South East stories that have made headlines in the region and further afield, including natural disasters. Stuart says he’s been privileged to share the region’s stories including the 2013 tornado which ripped through Kingston. “The tornado

wrecked houses and caused major disruption to people’s lives. The ABC helped inform the local community in the aftermath of the tornado as well as reporting their stories to the broader audience,” he said. “We need to celebrate what is good about this region and the people who live here – but there are also problems that need to be brought to attention and pursued with decision-makers. ABC South East has a proud history on all counts, and our role is even more important given changes in the commercial media landscape. “I’m proud of the ABC’s connection with the community and I’m chuffed when people tell me they feel that the ABC SE team is part of their family. In my new role I aim to further build this connection through the work of the ABC SE team, which will include ensuring more local stories are heard and seen on all the platforms the ABC now offers.” The Regional Editor for South Australia, Anthony Gerace, said Stuart is an experienced leader and a highly respected member of the local community. “He’ll certainly continue to lead his dedicated team in a positive direction and build on their success,” Mr Gerace said. The Director of ABC Regional, Fiona Reynolds, said the division’s teams are committed to supporting their communities. “Our teams live in regional Australia and are proud of the role they play in connecting people
through conversations, sharing local news and providing vital information during times of emergency,” Ms reynolds said. “We are more determined than ever to look after our loyal local audiences and share more of their stories across the regions and nationally on all platforms. ” Ms Reynolds said. The 2016 radio line-up for ABC South East was also confirmed last week. The following local andSstate programs and presenters will be back with their loyal audiences from midJanuary: • 6.15–6.30am - Rural Report • 6.30–10am with Selina Green • 10–11am with Stuart Stansfield
• 12–13pm - The Country Hour with Brett Worthington The afternoon’s schedule remains unchanged. Mr Gerace said the 2016 line up will continue to deliver South East listeners with everything they need to start the day; including all the latest local news, sport, weather and community information.

LOCAL Local teens join Glenelg Shire workforce Three local teenagers started their careers last week with the Glenelg Shire Council as new trainees. Hotspur-based 16 year old Carlos Chambers (pictured top right) has joined the Heywood council depot team as an apprentice mechanic whilst Portland’s Jess Hallinan and Annique Ray (pictured bottom right), both 18, are completing administration traineeships, based at the Portland council office. Carlos, a former Monivae College student, said having a “very mechanical” father had helped build his passion for the automotive field. “I enjoy working on vehicles and swinging spanners around; I thought this would be a good opportunity to pursue a career in mechanics,” he said. Jess and Annique, who were year 12 classmates last year at Portland Secondary College, aim to use their 12-month administration traineeships as a pathway into further tertiary study. Jess is based in the community and culture department and will later support the restructured assets and infrastructure team. Annique will start her traineeship with the corporate services department before transitioning to the planning and economic development unit later in the year. “I want to do a business degree. This traineeship will provide a taste of what is involved in this course,” Annique said. Jess aims to use the traineeship to build future career opportunities. “I want to keep studying and this is a good way to work towards something,” she said. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said council was proud to support local youth in building career paths close to home. “I would like to wish these three talented teenagers all the best as they start their careers with Glenelg Shire,” he said. “Council is proud to embrace our local youth, supporting them in building solid career opportunities here in our local community.”

LOCAL Rolling up her sleeves Robe’s Kristina Alexander has a lot of balls in the air but is proving to be an adept juggler as she makes her mark on the seaside community. A mother, business owner and local councillor, it is her work in establishing the Robe Surf Life Saving Club that has seen her honoured with an SA Community Achievement Award. Kristina took out the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency Rural Community Health & Wellbeing Award at the recent gala presentation. She is a founding member of the Robe Surf Life Saving Club and continues as a patrolling lifesaver, volunteer and president. Establishing the Robe Surf Life Saving committee last year, Kristina gained a successful grant application from Clubs SA for surf live saving equipment and sought donations of used equipment from other surf lifesaving clubs. And don’t think she’s stopping there – next on her agenda is securing a permanent home for the club, which now boasts more than 170 members. Kristina said her childhood at South Port Surf Life Saving Club inspired her to set up a club in Robe. “I grew up on the beaches of South Australia, South Port being my childhood club, so it is a natural and normal thing for me to be familiar with water and Surf Life Saving,” she said. “On moving to Robe 10 years ago I realised there was no such service available, and many children did not have the confidence or the skills necessary to keep themselves and others safe in and out of the water. We

have relatively safe swimming beaches in Robe, however it is important to teach the kids how to spot dangers like rips and undertows so they can go to any beach in the world and recognise dangers.” The Rural Community Health and Wellbeing Award is given to people and organisations who are improving health outcomes and quality fo life for regional communities. “Having access to a life saving service has brought a great sense of family and worth to the community,” Kristina said. “It has also provided the skills necessary for providing first aid, rescue and increasing safety on our beaches.” Ms Alexander was delighted with the win and credited the volunteers at the club as deserving of recognition. “Wining the award was obviously a bit
of a shock, you don’t embark on these things hoping to win an award,” she said. “However I am especially proud to represent the Robe Surf Life Saving Club committee and volunteers as they also deserve the award, as many long unpaid hours go into the success of the club itself. It is also very special as the rural doctors workforce agency do a fantastic job for the rural medical workforce.” The $2000 prize money is also timely for the tireless volunteer. “Being a new club means having to acquire an enormous amount of equipment,” Kristina said. “As we have grown in the last five years so have the children so we need a few larger boards for them, so certainly the prize money of $2000 will be a great help to us.” See page 31 for another Limestone Coast award winner.

ADVERTORIAL I Kevin Paisley Fashion Eyewear
Ten myths about contact lenses 1. I can’t wear contact lenses. Yes, you can! Thanks to advances in contact lens technology in recent years, just about everyone can wear contacts. For example, there are now multifocal for people with presbyopia, and toric soft lenses that correct astigmatism. You may be a better candidate for contact lens wear than you think! 2. A contact lens will get lost behind my eye. Nope! A thin membrane called the conjunctiva covers the white of your eye and connects to the inside of your eyelids, making it impossible for a contact lens to get lost behind your eye. 3. Contact lenses are uncomfortable. Not true. After a brief adaptation period, most people don’t even notice they’re wearing contact lenses. For those who do experience contact lens discomfort, the use of artificial tear supplements is often enough to remedy the problem. 4. Contact lenses can get permanently stuck to my eye. While it’s true that a soft contact lens can stick to the surface of your eye if it dries out, remoistening the lens by applying sterile saline or a multipurpose contact lens solution will get it moving again. 5. Contact lenses are too much trouble to take care of. Wrong! Multipurpose cleaning solutions make cleaning and disinfecting your lenses easy. Or you can choose to eliminate contact lens care altogether by wearing daily disposable lenses. 6. Wearing contact lenses causes eye problems. It’s true that contact lens wear can increase your risk of certain
eye problems. But if you follow your optometrists instructions regarding how to care for your lenses, how long to wear them and how frequently you should replace them, wearing contact lenses is very safe. 7. I’ll never be able to get them in my eyes. Sure you will. It might seem difficult at first, but your eye care professional will make sure you learn how to apply and remove your contacts before you leave their office. Most people become adept at handling contact lenses much faster than they expect to! 8. Contacts can pop out of my eye. Years ago, old-fashioned hard contact lenses could sometimes pop out of a wearer’s eyes during sports or other activities. But today’s contacts — including rigid gas permeable contacts — fit closer to the eye so it’s very rare for a contact lens to dislodge from a wearer’s eye unexpectedly. 9. Contact lenses are too expensive. Not true. Contact lenses can sometimes be less expensive than a good pair of glasses. Even daily disposable contact lenses, once considered a luxury, can cost only about a dollar a day. 10. I’m too old to wear contact lenses. Who says? With the advent of bifocal contact lenses, and contacts that are specially designed for dry eyes, advancing age is no longer the barrier to successful contact lens wear it once was. Ask your optometrist if you’re a good candidate for contacts — the answer might surprise you.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY For sale... by Robbie Tansel I read with interest this week that Hugh Hefner is putting the Playboy mansion up for sale. My first thought was, is there actually enough cleaning supplies in the world that would make it safe to live in? I’ve got a feeling that there would be quite a few stains that would need addressing
before I’d be prepared to live there. At the very least I think you’d be looking to put some new sheets on the beds. My next thought though is that it probably does have a bit of investment potential, regardless of the two hundred million dollar price tag attached. Without being silly, it is quite significant for the history attached to it. Possibly it should be turned into a museum as I’m sure plenty of members of the public would be interested in having a look around. Mount a couple of Playboy bunny

displays for people to ogle. Another possibility might be to turn it into a luxury hotel. People could come and stay and mount a Playboy bunny of their own, as so many have over the years. I imagine getting the place ready for open inspections would be a bit of a nightmare. I can picture Hugh Hefner walking around trying to tidy up, figuring out where to put the special toys they have at the mansion or discarded underwear that’s laying around in the lounge room. I think it’d be a lot like the clean up after Schoolies week on the Gold Coast. Prospective buyers are allowed to take a tour of the property, with one exception. Hef’s bedroom is off limits. I’m guessing he probably has Playboy magazines hidden under his bed that he doesn’t want anyone to know about. Again, I’m not sure I’d want to have a look in there anyway; not without a hazmat suit on. I think I’d probably feel safer taking a tour of the Chernobyl nuclear power site. I’d just liberally douse the bedroom with petrol and throw a match in there. This wouldn’t be an option in the short term mind you. One of the conditions of the sale is that Hef is allowed to live in the mansion until he dies. I imagine this
would be a lot like the time we had Grandpa Brookes living at our place except the girls going into his room would be a lot better looking on the way in, but similarly disappointed and horrified by what they’ve been through a minute and a half later when they leave. I guess having Hef living in your house, there may be opportunities to make friends with attractive young ladies but again, despite the fact they generally look quite nice, if they’re prepared to come and throw themselves at Hef, there’s every chance they are carrying more fungus than the Playboy mansion grotto when 123 people contracted Legionnaires Disease in 2011. I’ll be interested to read the advertisement when it’s listed shortly. I’m assuming there’ll be an advertisement in

Or throw in a couple of pictures of some Playboy bunnies. That’ll sell a few extra copies of Lifestyle1 this week. I’m assuming the ad will highlight all of the major features of the mansion. Having fertility issues? There’s not a single surface in the building that contact with won’t cause pregnancy. Act now and you’ll receive a free dressing-gowned creepy old man. LOCAL New health pathways for Portland and Hamilton Portland and Hamilton students have a new local pathway into a university health science degree that is already helping regional people to achieve their goals. Deakin University is now offering the first year of its Bachelor of Health Sciences from the South West TAFE Portland and Hamilton campuses. The pathway offers students in and around Hamilton and Portland the opportunity to begin the University’s course by completing their first year in either location before transitioning to the Warrnambool campus. The pathway has been established in partnership with South West TAFE. Current Deakin student Emma Anderson, from Mount Gambier, said the course was giving her new career options. “I chose this field because I love working with people and helping them,” Ms Anderson said. “I wanted to add to the current field I’m in, remedial massage therapy, and have another profession to fall back on in case I injure myself,” she said. “Massaging is a physical job.” Ms Anderson said she chose a Health Science degree because of the wide choice of majors and electives. “I initially chose to major in nutrition and exercise science, with some electives in physical activity and health and psychology. However, over time I changed my mind, and instead chose to focus on majoring fully in psychology and nutrition, with electives in exercise science and physical activity and health.” The mature age South Australian student completed Year 12 in Mount Gambier and was accepted into a social work course at a South Australian university but deferred. She worked for
15 years in other industries before commencing her degree. “I chose the Deakin University Warrnambool Campus in 2012 because there wasn’t a course like this in Mt Gambier with the choice and the flexibility of completing many units externally,” she said. “This fits in with my schedule as I can study at home, as well as during the days and at times that suit me. “What I have enjoyed about university in Warrnambool and the Bachelor of Health Sciences is the overall ease of studying online using Cloud Deakin, the online support and the way the units are structured. Her plans after graduating are to continue studying psychology, to eventually go onto become a clinical psychologist.” For more information visit http://www.deakin.edu.au/studyat-deakin/study-options-and-pathways/pathwaysto-deakin/learning-centres or contact Great South Coast Health Articulation Project Officer Emma Ludeman on (03)5563 3502.

LOCAL Aiming for Rio Jamie McInerney has her sights firmly set on the 2016 Rio De Janiero Paralympics and recently breaking a 20 year old Australian Open discus record suggest she is certainly on track. Her recent efforts on her journey as a potential Paralympian have seen the determined athlete bring home the prestigious Grandeur Press Sports Award at the 2015 Community Achievement Awards. Jamie was presented on stage by Grandeur Press managing director Gibrian Palmer at a gala presentation of 350 guests gathered from across South Australia. Jamie has been defying the odds since she was five years old and a sickening car accident in May 1999 left her with an acquired brain injury. Jamie’s initial prognosis was anything but positive but she didn’t just fight to survive, she has gone on to be a highly decorated athlete, an accomplished photographer and a typical 20 year old. But make no mistake – it was a huge battle. She had to completely retrain her brain and there were hours of frustrating hydrotherapy and the even tougher, speech pathology sessions. until a skewer inserted into centres comes out clean. Cool in pan for 5 minutes. Transfer to wire rack to cool completely. Meanwhile, to make chocolate ganache, place chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Bring cream just to the boil in a saucepan over medium heat. Pour cream over chocolate. Stir with a metal spoon until melted and smooth. Place in fridge, stirring often, for 40 minutes until thickened slightly. To make chocolate filling, use electric beaters to beat butter in a bowl until pale and creamy. Gradually add icing sugar, malted milk powder and milk, in alternating batches, until smooth and combined. With the beater on low, gradually beat in the chocolate until just combined. Place one cake on a wire rack set over a baking tray. Use a palette knife to spread filling over cake. Sprinkle with Tim Tams. Top with remaining cake. Place in fridge for 30 minutes to set. Pour ganache over the top of the cake. Use a palette knife to spread ganache over top and sides to cover. Set aside for 10 minutes to set.

Until February 21 Of all the printmaking techniques screenprinting is without a doubt the most humble but many artists have used it over a long period to create vibrant, expressive prints. Resulting in large areas of flat colour the technique nonetheless exploits coloured inks like no other technique. It’s clearly read images have resulted in its use industrially but this exhibition demonstrates that its use in the hands of artists enables its true worth to shine.

Eleven year old Laryssa King has taken sisterly love to a whole new level and the Mount Gambier youngster was awarded for her efforts being named the 2015 Young Carer of the Year in South Australia. A Year 5 student at Suttontown Primary School, Laryssa cares for her autistic brother James, who is currently in Year 1 at the same school. James’ diagnosis came when he was not quite three years old and Laryssa has been front and centre of his care basically from that time – officially registering as a carer two years ago. “I help James,” Laryssa said. “I just take him away when he gets stressed and it gives mum a break if I step up.” And there is no doubt mum Chantel appreciates Laryssa’s hands on involvement with her brother. “They go to school together and she helps there as well,” Chantel said.”What Laryssa does

Laryssa has helped improve James’ literacy and numeracy skills and the duo often “play school” at home with the one on one time helping James grasp the necessary skills. “He complains he doesn’t want to do it but then it is so cute watching them together and he really enjoys it,” Chantel said. “He calls her Mrs Sissy.” Laryssa also tries to make James feel a part of everything the family does. “If James can’t come and can’t do whatever it is we are doing Laryssa always has her camera and takes heaps of photos so he can see what it was like,” Chantel said. Laryssa was also the driving force in setting up a Young Carers Group for

SHOOTING Shooting stars to train local hot shots
Olympic gold medal shooter Russell Mark OAM and his Commonwealth games gold medallist wife Lauryn will visit Mount Gambier next month to coach local shooters and take part in a Sportsman’s dinner event. The Mount Gambier Gun Club will host the duo on Friday, January 19, and Saturday, February 20, kicking off with junior shooter trap and skeet coaching, offered for free to under 18s, on Friday afternoon. The Marks are two of the best known and high profile clay target shooters in the world: Olympic gold medallist and ‘Best in History in Olympic Double Trap’ Russell Mark was one of Australia‘s four individual gold medallists at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, winning his medal by a record six targets from his nearest rival, and his wife Lauryn is a triple Commonwealth Games gold medallist. ‘We are thrilled to have Russell and Lauryn Mark offering coaching to shooters from across the Limestone Coast and Western Victoria,” said Mount Gambier Gun Club committee member Liz Rymill. “This is a one-off opportunity for local shooting men and women to learn from the very best, who have achieved the ultimate success in

international competition.” Following the junior’s coaching session, where young people will learn about gun fit, eye dominance, skeet and trap technique, health and nutrition and how to perform under competition pressure, Russell Mark will be guest speaker at the Gun Club’s Shooting with the Stars Sportsman’s dinner. The dinner will be held from 7pm at the Blue Lake Golf Links, Grant Avenue, Mount Gambier on Friday, February 19. “The dinner event is open to all; it will be a great opportunity for sportspeople to learn about rising to the top in competitive sport, what it takes to become an Olympic champion and what can be applied in one’s own game, be it shooting, golf, tennis, billiards and so forth, to take your skills and mental preparedness to the next level,” said Liz. On Saturday, at the club, skeet and trap coaching will be on offer for open shooters of any age, stage and ability. The comprehensive sessions cost $125 per person and last two hours, with squads limited to just six shooters for personalised and intensive coaching. For more information about the coaching clinics or the Sportsman’s dinner, please contact Liz Rymill on 0401 854 638.

Nothing but smiles all round after the 2016 Australian Country Cricket Championships hosted by the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association earlier this month. Not only did the host State emerge champions of the men’s division but it also included six former and current Limestone Coast players - Adam Somerfield, Matt Dyer, Matt McInerney, Josh Fidler, Ben Parish and Nick Clayfield. The inaugural women’s competition also saw local success with the SA girls making the title decider, finishing runnerup to East Asia Pacific. That side also boasted a local flavour with Kongorong’s Tia Pelkonen. Both Victorian line-ups also had strong championships, with Western Waves player Ben Boyd skippering Victoria Country Men to a second placing and Victoria Country Women boasting three of this region’s finest - Lauren McLean, Mikayla Haddow and Steph Townsend - going through to the semi final stage undefeated before bowing out to the South Australian team. Former Millicent & District Association player Ben Parish was honoured with selection in the Men’s Australian Country XI - his 165 against Victoria in a one day fixture a highlight of his consistent championships. He was joined in the championship team with Boyd (pictured above), who as the leading wicket taker of the championships with 14, was also named skipper. Somerfield and Clayfield were also among the leading wicket takers at the event, both finishing with 10. From a local viewpoint the event couldn’t have gone any better. “We were rapt,” Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association’s George Kidman said. “It all went off without a hitch and for South Australia to win the carnival and the South Australian women to make the final was also a highlight.” All six grounds used for the championships - Malseed Park, Frew Park, McCorquindale Park, Marist Park, Blue Lake Sports Park and McDonald Park - were all praised by Cricket Australia officials and players alike. “If anything the bowlers won at the end of the day but it was a fair battle between bat and ball,” Kidman said. He expressed his gratitude for the support of South Australian Cricket Association’s Justin Groves, who made up to half a dozen visits to the region in the lead up to the championships, assisting local curators Gary Ashby and Brian Doyle, as well as Mount Gambier City Council groundsman Rick Karsten. “He gave them a program to get the grounds ready and he was the inspiration behind the renovations to McDonald Park and McCorquindale Park,” Kidman said. The association received just over $70,000 in infrastructure grants from SACA to assist in preparing the local grounds. Kidman said the success of the women’s inaugural involvement in the championships was the stand out memory for him from the January 4-11 event. “It has effectively doubled the size of the championships and the feeling is that it is sustainable,” Kidman said. “As a local association we now need to take advantage of the momentum generated by the championships, especially to drive some local women’s cricket and that will be a big talking point to get something started.” The support of Cricket Australia, the SACA and City of Mount Gambier were crucial to the success of the event, as was the volunteer support of the local clubs, with every club contributing to the volunteer base for the January championships. Another highlight of the week, in terms of the South Australian victory, was to see four or five former Outbacks players from this region at Blue Lake Sports Park to join the title celebrations. “It was really great to see those former State players there to celebrate the win,” Kidman said.
