The new face of the local travel industry Life is all about convenience these days - click and collect is the latest in grocery shopping; we shop online with increasing regularity and if we want to know something we just grab our phone or iPad and google it. Now we can do the same when planning our next holiday, with Mobile Travel Agents (MTA) offering you all the personalised service and face to face contact of a traditional travel agency, with the convenience of meeting you when and where it suits your schedule best. Amber Halleday is now providing that service for Mount Gambier travellers as the first MTA Travel consultant in this region. Amber (pictured) has been in the industry since finishing Year 12 and has racked up eight years experience as a travel consultant since gaining her first job at what was then Harvey World Travel (now Helloworld). “I finished my last Year 12 exam on the Friday and started work on the Monday,” Amber said. “My entire career has been spent working with the team in Mount Gambier and I was offered many incredible opportunities to see the world as well as winning several awards.” And while Amber appreciated that opportunity straight out of school, eight years later she was ready for a new challenge. “I wanted the freedom and flexibility of being my own boss, and being able to meet my clients when it suited them,” Amber said. “In today’s busy lifestyle it is sometimes just too hard to get time to think about planning a holiday. I want to be able to take the stressful and time consuming part out of it, and my hours are flexible so I can fit in with you, you don’t have to fit in with me.” Amber and her extensive industry and personal travel experience was the perfect fit for the MTA
Phone
brand, “MTA is an exclusive travel company accepting less than 10% of it’s applicants each year so it was a real honour to be given the opportunity to work with them.” MTA began life as a traditional travel agency owned by Queensland couple Roy and Karen Merricks. In 1999, MTA revolutionised the traditional Australian travel agency model by bringing experienced mobile travel agents to you. Today, MTA has over 350 Travel Experts located right across the country. They are highly awarded, respected and recognised within the travel industry, both nationally and internationally. They enjoy ‘big agency’ buying power with exclusive deals and unique travel experiences in both the corporate and leisure markets. MTA’s amazing global connections extend to the exclusive by-invitation only networks of Virtuoso, Belmond, Cruiseco, and Virgin Galactic, plus they are affiliated with American Express. Through these associations their clients receive premium products that makes travel more rewarding. No matter what type of domestic or international holiday you have in mind, your MTA travel expert can make it happen. Amber has a beautiful office space located at ‘The Convent’ – 20 Penola Road if you would like to meet her, however MTA is all about enjoying the flexibility of arranging your holiday at a time and place that suits you and Amber is excited to be bringing this new concept to Mount Gambier. “My love for travel started at a young age,” she said. “I was lucky to come from a family who loved to travel around Australia, so many of my childhood years were spent in the caravan exploring every corner of our beautiful backyard. Some of my favourite places in
the world are in Australia, including Airlie Beach where my husband and I recently got married. You can’t beat the beautiful, relaxed vibe that the Whitsundays has to offer.” Her career and personal love of travelling has seen her head to Europe for four crazy days to see Lady GaGa in concert, trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, go on safari in South Africa, visit the Taj Mahal in India, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain in Rome and been in awe of the sheer size and scale of the Pyramids of Egypt. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Amber’s frequent flier miles with over 22 countries explored to date. “I plan to keep adding to my list, and I look forward to helping you add to yours and creating memories to last a lifetime.” Amber now has the chance to plan those holidays and help create those memories when it best suits
her clients. From scheduling a business trip to planning a honeymoon, from a family holiday to a quick getaway, Amber is happy to plan whatever you need for your next travel opportunity. “I look forward to meeting you and working together to make your travel dreams a reality.” Call Amber today for all your travel needs on 1300 365 688 Ext 585 or email ahalleday@mtatravel.com.au

LOCAL Top arts award for Glenelg Shire icon Glenelg Shire’s Karl Hatton has been “kicking ass” in his field for years – but now it is official and on the mantel for all to see. The arts and culture manager has been recognised by Regional Arts Victoria (RAV) with the annual Most Kick Ass Victorian Presenter Award recognising Mr Hatton’s tireless efforts in attracting a quality line-up of performances to Glenelg Shire. Mr Hatton (pictured right), who retired from council last week, has attracted about 50 RAV coordinated shows during the past eight years, making Glenelg Shire Council a State leader in the implementation of diverse arts programs. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the award was well-deserved. “Karl has been instrumental in developing an innovative arts program for the shire. He is not scared of stepping out of the mainstream and bringing high quality artistic programs to our regional audiences,” Cr Oberlander said. “The truth is that Karl has been ‘kicking ass’ in his role for years and the wider community has been reaping the benefits of his vast knowledge and experience during his past 16 years with council. “Karl has ensured the Glenelg Shire has been able to enjoy the highest calibre of performances, many which have been on the world stage, and we thank him for this tireless work.” Mr Hatton said he was humbled to receive the RAV award, and emphasised that it was only possible with the backing of a team
of professional staff. “We are also fortunate to have good civic infrastructure across the shire which allows us to attract high quality shows, some international and of the highest standard,” Mr Hatton said. “People say that they are going to the city for the weekend to see the opera, or another dramatic performance. “The fact is they can see that quality style of performance, right here, at home in Glenelg Shire in towns like Portland, Casterton and Heywood. “One of the best things in my role is to hear people say thank you for bringing high quality performances to town, and seeing them being blown away by the calibre of what they are viewing on stage.”

LOCAL Community event set to ring in New Year Set in the picturesque Vansittart Park, the largest New Year’s Eve celebrations outside of Adelaide and boasting rural South Australia’s biggest fireworks displays is set to explode to herald in 2016. The organising committee is inviting the whole community to join together in a relaxed and safe environment and enjoy the entertainment and activities on offer. The event is a broad community celebration and will cater for all members of the family. Police Limestone Coast Superintendent Trevor Twilley is again providing police resources to the event to ensure it remains a safe environment for all to enjoy. “It is an event that has been embraced by the community and it is well organised and it is an easy event to police,” he said. “We work in conjunction with the security officers employed on the night to ensure all that attend enjoy their night out and revel in the celebrations.” Committee chair Steve Toope is thrilled with this year’s celebrations and says the small committee is very conscious to keep the event fresh and relevant. “Each year we try to add to the event and this year will be no different,” Mr Toope said. “Obviously the fireworks is the key ingredient for the night and we have been told there will be new fireworks for the two displays on the night.” The celebrations are for the community to have fun and allow mums and dads to relax and enjoy the entertainment and know the kids can run around and be entertained safely. The committee has continued to hold entry prices as low as possible to ensure those who wish to attend, can do. Entry prices are $30 for a family with up to six children, $12 per adult (18yrs and over) and $8 for concession card holders This year there are additional caterers on board that include strawberries and cream and an ice cream outlet, together with BBQ, pizza, chips, hotdogs and popcorn. Entertainment includes live music with Mischief and Mayhem as the headline act and a
support cast of local entertainers. The children’s entertainment area will have giant games, jumping castle, sand pit, giant slide, chair-a-ride, bucking bull, photo booth, mini putt putt, bungy run, go karts, face painting, Bunnings activity tent, circus act that includes walk arounds in the crowd and lessons on various circus acts. The ever popular wrestlers will again be on the card to perform for the crowd. This is a hugely entertaining event and it always draws a huge crowd and the kids love the performers. Festivities kick off at 6pm with fireworks displays at 9pm and 12midnight.

LOCAL The best & the brightest do the region proud Primary school teaching and medicine – that is the future plans of Mount Gambier top two Year 12 students, following the release of the 2015 results last Tuesday. Grant High School’s Janae Fox (right) and Tenison Woods College student Jason Ong (left) both achieved ATARs of 97.95, setting them on the path for their chosen careers. Janae is the first Grant High School student in some time to earn the top ranking in Mount Gambier and despite earning an ATAR that basically means the world is her oyster, she is sticking true to her lifelong career goal – primary teaching, taking up the locally based course at Mount Gambier’s Uni SA campus. “I’ve always wanted to be a primary school teaching,” she said. And the profession will be the richer for having such a dedicated, hard working student heading into its ranks. “I just wanted to achieve as much as I could – get the most out of my schooling, she said. “I wanted to do the best I could and prove to myself that I could do it.” Jason has his heart set on turning his ATAR into a degree in medicine and has already had his
interview with the Adelaide based course. He wants to attend Adelaide University or Monash University, in Melbourne. But even an impressive ATAR doesn’t have Jason counting his career chickens just yet. “I am hoping to do medicine but if I don’t get into medicine I will do science or health science,” he said. That would, of course, be with the view to transferring to a medical stream is possible. Jason said despite the pressure associated with Year 12 and attaining the optimum results, he enjoyed his final year at school. “It has been a very, very enjoyable year,” Jason said. “It was stressful but still enjoyable and everyone was in the same boat.” Once again the region enjoyed strong results across all four high schools and colleges. Rachael Hines and Maddy Murdoch headed the Mount Gambier High School results with 97.25, while Bronson Pfeiler topped the St Martins Lutheran College results with 97.55. Grant High School is also celebrating the achievements of Jade Maiden who was one of 26 students State-wide to receive a Governor of South Australia Commendation – it is the second
successive year a South east student has been honoured on this prestigious list. The Governor of South Australia Commendation acknowledges but just SACE academic achievement but also

LOCAL The best & the brightest do the region proud from page 21 The Grant High principal was also pleased with the overall SACE completion rate. “Hopefully it will set the kids onto whatever their chosen paths are and that’s what it’s all about after all,” she said. Tenison Woods College principal David Mezinec was equally please with his school’s Year 12 achievements. “The class of 2015 has worked solidly throughout the year and their results are a testament to their consistent hard work,” Mr Mezinec said. Mitchell Thompson (97.75); Sarah Hayman (97.15); Abbie Hay (96.8); Alexandra Kenny (96.00) and Emily Gazzard (95.75) joined top student Jason Ong as Tenison’s best and brightest, with 25 students in total topping the 80 mark for their ATAR. Emily Gazzard and Shelby Fensom were the two Tenison students to receive perfect scores for one of their subjects – Emily for her research project and Shelby for English Communications. The college principal, though, was quick to point out that a student’s ATAR was only part of what paves the way for a successful future. “The significant currencies in the world of work remain attitude, presence and attention to the task, team work and loyalty to the
organisation, all of which can be attained with a deliberate approach despite the level of academic achievement.” Despite the impressive results from Mount Gambier High School’s top five students – Rachael and Maddy (97.25); Emma Greenfield (96.5); Aiden Franchetto (94.40) and Briana Allen (93.65) – school principal Chris Edmonds was very focussed on the big picture. “We’re rapt with how the kids have gone,” he said. “There is an enormous support network behind these results – parents, teachers and school counsellors.” The school had a 96 percent completion rate and was as thrilled with the students who did it tough and got through as with the shining lights that made the top five. “We are almost more pleased for the kids who were able to scrape through – the ones who weren’t sure they were going to pass,” Mr Edmonds

said. “The teachers are back at the school now going through and highlighting who made it – very focussed on the big picture stuff.” St Martins Lutheran College was also celebrating another strong performance with Bronson Pfeiler (above right) topping the school’s SACE scores with 97.55. Tania Zeissig (above left), who received a Merit Award last year as a Year 11 student, closely followed Bronson with 96.85, with Maddie Opie (93.85), Annie Swiggs (91.4), Emma Becroft (95.0) and Kate Telford (93.25), another student who received a SACE Merit as a Year 11 student in 2014, rounded out the school’s best performers. Principal Di Eckermann was thrilled with the results that saw the school ranking highly in Statewide statistics. “The school has done really well and I am proud of the achievements of the students,” she said.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY My gift to you... by Robbie Tansel I was at a playground recently with my son Shaquille. What I saw there was something that really disturbs me about our modern life but is becoming far too common. There were other children at the playground. Several of the children were not playing on the really quite fantastic plastic wonderland. What, you may be wondering, were they doing instead? I’m sure that many of you have already guessed correctly that they were playing on iPads and other electrical devices. These weren’t 12 year old kids either. I would estimate that they were about seven. When presented with the opportunity to run, climb, jump, hide and use their imagination, they would prefer to sit down and exercise their swiping fingers. Let’s not even get started on why a seven year old has a tablet. Let’s not even get started on what sort of a parent let’s their seven year old take their tablet to the playground. I think it’s just a very sad reflection of what our modern world has done to our children. Do you remember how excited you were to go to a playground as a child?
To be honest, playgrounds were quite a rare luxury back in our day. They were made out of wood, which we’ve only found out decades later was laced with toxic chemicals to preserve it. But going to a playground was just about the highlight of our year. We didn’t even need a playground to be honest. A tree with branches at reachable intervals for ease of climbing was hours of fun. After careful consideration I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason our kids would prefer a screen to a playground is that we’ve over indulged them. Coincidentally we’re right in the middle of the time of year when we indulge them the most. Christmas. Our kids don’t need hundreds of new toys. They’ve already got too many toys that they hardly ever play with. Get them one or two toys, a new game (not an X-Box or Playstation game by the way) and a book. Then teach them about the joy of putting a gift under a wishing tree somewhere to brighten someone else’s Christmas. Talk to them about how tough life can be for some people and how lucky they are. Get them to donate some of their old toys to charity or sell them on eBay and donate the earnings. You never know, you might build some gratitude into the little beasts. To be honest I think we waste horribly at this time of year in general. I don’t know when it became this thing where we were buying every man and his dog a present. Let’s think about that dog
actually. People now buy their dogs and other pets a Christmas present. That is a waste. Your pet doesn’t need a Christmas outfit. Go to the park and throw a ball to it for an hour. Happy as a pig in mud. That’s a hint for you if you have a pet pig, by the way. Get it some mud. Workplace Kris Kringles are another terrible waste. What can you buy for under ten dollars that isn’t crap that they don’t need? Imagine that there have been ten thousand Kris Kringle presents at about ten dollars each bought over the Christmas season. That’s one hundred thousand dollars of unnecessary spending. Let’s just write them a Christmas card where we give them a genuine expression of appreciation and affection for what they do. Even Christmas lunch is a waste. I love gorging myself on Christmas pudding as much as the next person but we eat far more than is necessary. Even after you spend the next couple of days eating leftovers, there is still plenty that is wasted. My Christmas message to you all is we don’t need hundreds of presents, and the extra kilos we’ll need to work off from overdoing lunch to have a good Christmas Day. Make time for the family that don’t annoy you and just have a relaxing, rest filled day. And try to be nice to the family that do annoy you. If you think you got a Kris Kringle gift that was a good use of someone’s ten dollars, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

LOCAL Former Mount Gambier man running for MND A Canberra man will run from Canberra to Melbourne to help fund research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Ryan Sandeman, who was born in Mount Gambier, has set himself a target to conquer 720kms over a two-week period during March 2016. The money raised from donations along the way will be handed to the Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia in a bid to combat the disease, which claimed Ryan’s grandfather, Bruce Johnson, on Juily 27 this year. Brought to greater public attention after the Ice Bucket Challenge became a social media phenomenon, MND is a progressive degenerative disorder of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain. It results in weakness and wasting of the muscles, with the disorder usually starting in middle life and causing varied effects among sufferers. Ryan’s family carries a genetic mutation on the superoxide dismutase 1 gene (SOD1); his 39-year-old cousin, Njari Johnson, suffers a rare and highly debilitating form of MND and is presently wheel chair-dependant, while tests have also confirmed that Njari’s father, Peter Johnson, also carries the SOD1 genetic mutation. “Run 4 SOD1 represents my desire to support my family by raising general awareness of the disease, together with funding to aid scientific research,” Ryan said. On March 1 next year, the 37 year old will set off from the Canberra suburb of Gordon, heading south via Cooma and Bombala, in New South Wales, before crossing the border into Victoria. Cann River, Lakes Entrance and Traralgon will all serve as stop-overs during his trek into Melbourne, with Ryan aiming to cover 51.4km per day. He will also be willing to speak to service clubs en route in a bid to raise greater awareness of the disease. Motor Neurone Disease Australia has thrown its support behind the project, thanking Ryan for

his generous efforts. “Running from Canberra to Melbourne is an incredible feat and a great tribute to everyone living with the SOD1 gene,” Janet Nash, Executive Director Research at MND Australia said. “We look forward to following your progress.” The following Facebook and GoFundraise webpages are enabling supporters to follow Ryan’s progress and start donating: •https://www.facebook.com/Run4-SOD1-Motor-Neurone-DiseaseResearch-1593931820839684 •http://run.gofundraise.com.au/page/ SandemanR

LOCAL See in the New Year at Portland’s foreshore Enjoy stunning fireworks over one of Victoria’s best bays and great live local music this New Year’s Eve in Portland. Glenelg Shire Council’s annual end of year celebrations will again shut down Portland’s Bentinck Street for a seven hour long street party starting from 6pm. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said this year’s festivities would be bigger than ever, promising a great family evening. “Don’t think about leaving town this New Year’s Eve – the best party will be right here at home,” Cr Oberlander said. This year’s free entertainment includes top 40s popular cover band Fiction, and local country sensation Karla Dwyer. Portland-based performers The Dads, featuring Tony Burgess and Paul Whitehead, will also perform on the foreshore stage. The talented duo, who are local tyre fitters
by day, are retiring their act after this new year performance, which is guaranteed to feature plenty of rocking covers. Ron the Clown will be entertaining the youngest revellers with his fun antics, including juggling, puppetry and ballooning. Cr Oberlander said the festivities attracted thousands of revellers. “Portland has one of the best foreshores in Australia making it the perfect amphitheatre to watch the mesmerising fireworks display which will go for 15 minutes,” he said. “The reflection on the water makes this display one of the best you will see in country Victoria. The great thing is the display is not only at midnight, an early 10pm display ensures everyone can be part of the end of year celebrations.”To learn more visit www. glenelg.vic.gov.au
Free parking trial Free Saturday parking will return to the Portland CBD on Saturdays in a bid to boost the local business economy. Glenelg Shire Council last week endorsed a notice of motion to immediately return free parking to the town’s main shopping precinct on Saturdays in a bid to support both the Christmas and Easter holiday trading periods. The chamber fully endorsed the motion, which will cover any metered car park in the CBD precinct until the end of March 2016. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the free parking initiative would be initially trialled, based on public feedback. “This is one step that will support our mission to have a CBD with no vacancies,” Cr Oberlander said. “It sends a clear message that Portland’s CBD is open for business. Council is proud to support the local retail sector to assist in boosting their trade and further encourage people to shop locally.” The free parking follows previous council decisions to reduce commercial rates from 120 per cent to 100
per cent, equal with the residential rate. This was in addition to the abandoning of footpath trading fees in a further council initiative to support small traders to do business Cr Oberlander said council was focused on providing stimulus to the local economy. “This free parking initiative will make our CBD further attractive for shoppers, and will assist retailers in luring more trade to their stores,” he said. “It is a positive step forward as we work towards the implementation of Growing Glenelg, a council policy to support local business and industry in an effort to create more local jobs.” Other parking restrictions, such as disabled and no standing areas, will continue to be enforced during the free Saturday trial period.

What to do on the way to saying “i do” What happens after you’ve agreed to officially tie the knot… This is a special time in your life when lasting memories are made and you want them to be about planning and then enjoying a wonderful celebration of your love with family and friends. Whether it’s for 300 or 30, whether it rivals the royal wedding or whether it’s a backyard barbeque, whether you just decided to make it official one morning over breakfast or whether it was the grandest, most romantic proposal of all time, the planning still needs to meticulous. Paying attention to details in the lead up makes for a relaxing day when your wedding day finally arrives and if you have a clear picture in your mind as to what you want try and share the load with close, trusted friends and family so that you’re not too exhausted to enjoy the day when it rolls around. Be sure about what costs are involved and the most important advice is keep a paperwork trail – it can eliminate confusion about what’s been promised and just how much it’s going to cost. After you’ve said “yes”… • If the proposal came with a ring then make sure it’s insured… • If you’re picking out the ring together after set the ground rules early on budget and do your research… • Decide if you’re going to have an engagement party and set a date. Planning an engagement party is a nice rehearsal for your event management skills… • Set a date – factor in what time of the year you’d like to be married, how long you’ll need to save and plan, any special events you’d like to avoid and a realistic time to be away from work and able to take time off in the lead up and aftermath for a honeymoon… • ASAP you need to sit down together and work out an acceptable and REALISTIC budget – this might mean putting in place a savings schedule to make sure you easily cover the anticipated costs as well as hopefully having some money set aside for those unexpected costs that could crop up as the wedding draws closer… • You also need to establish just who is paying for what and what financial involvement the parents were considering so you know exactly where every cent is coming from...Get the money chat out of the way early – it can be awkward but you don’t want to be haggling in the lead up to the big day… • Map out the big picture and start locking in the crucial elements for the day… Decide on just what kind of wedding and reception you want and how many guests you want to include… • Locking in a reception venue as early as possible is critical. Try and organise a face to face consultation with a selection of different venues and caterers and ask plenty of questions so you know exactly what they’re offering as exactly what it’s going to cost. • Decide on a civil or religious ceremony and a venue for the ceremony and book…

FEATURE - Bridal Expo What to do on the way to saying “i do” FROM OPP. PAGE • Start getting paperwork together for all the legal requirements of marriage and check with your celebrant or priest just what you need to provide… • Select your wedding party TOGETHER and then approach them about being involved… • You’ll need to start deciding on dresses and suits and by association a colour scheme for the big day – while the guys will probably be easy fixed, you need to be realistic about settling on a colour and style of dress for your bridesmaids, giving you plenty of time for fittings and choice of accessories…This is even more critical if all your bridal party is not located where you live during the planning stages. • If you have a preferred hair stylist and makeup artist for your wedding day then check out their availability as soon as possible and at least temporarily book their services… • Start investigating photographers and/or videographers and lock your preferred option in… If you have a lot of guests coming from away or are planning a destination wedding, you’ll need to organise Save The Date notification and even check out potential special deals for guests at a particular accommodation facility… • Start contemplating honeymoon destinations, factoring in budget, time you’ll be able to get off work and a location you’ll both enjoy given the time of the year you’ll be travelling. Once again research is the key to getting the best deal… • You don’t have to rush out and buy every bridal
magazine on the shelves but keep your eye out for different ideas and keep an ideas folder… Six months and counting… • With most of the big picture elements to the wedding already locked in it’s time to start sweating the finer details of the day… • Book a florist – once again some face to face consultations with a selection of florists and looking at examples of their previous work should help with the final decision…. • Confirm your hair stylist and make up artist and book in any pre-wedding appointments like a tan, facial or manicure as well…You also might like to check if guests from away or close friends would like to use the same stylists and make sure they’re catered for as well… • In a way it’s probably the biggest (and most discussed) decision the bride makes and you have to make it NOW – the dress. Whether you’re ordering it, getting it handmade or lucky enough to find one off the rack that fits, you need to tick this job off the to-do list NOW. • Plan a girls weekend when you can try on dresses and shoes and get those outfits locked in as well… • Reconfirm ALL your reception details… • Select and approach an MC for the reception… • Time to book in the cars or make whatever transport arrangements you’re going to need.. • Decide on any entertainment for the reception and book it i CONT. LOCAL HEYWOOD KINDY STUDENTS SPREAD CHRISTMAS CHEER Heywood Kindergarten is spreading Christmas cheer by helping to distribute hampers to the shire’s most needy residents. Throughout the year kindergarten staff, children and their families have been collecting nonperishable items to pack hampers as part of the Adopt a Pensioner Program. Heywood Rural Health help deliver the hampers to the shire’s elderly and disabled residents, ensuring the food is distributed to those most in need. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the kindergarten had been helping to distribute the hampers over the past four years. “It is important that we teach our next generation the importance of giving to those less fortunate,” Cr Oberlander said. “Heywood’s kindergarten children have learnt the importance and joy that can be received from gift-giving. “The kindergarten has received many thank you cards from grateful residents over the years that have had their Christmas brightened by this much-needed and cherished hamper delivery.” The Heywood Kindergarten’s last session is on Wednesday 16 December. The centre will reopen for 2016 with a kindergarten information day on Wednesday 27 January with a fouryear-olds session from 9.30am and prekinder three-year-old group at 11am. The best local drops to complement your festive season The Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council (LCGWC) is embracing the arrival of summer by releasing a comprehensive list of ‘Hot 62’ wines to try this festive season. The Limestone Coast Hot 62 is a toast to one of the region’s most successful years on record, saluting gold medal-winning wines from the history-making Limestone Coast Wine Show held in late October. A record medal haul was achieved during the 2015 event, with a total of 62 gold medals well and truly eclipsing the previous record of 43 set in 2014. “Sixty-five per cent of wines entered won a medal, with a further 72 silver and 147 bronze medals also awarded,” said the wine show committee’s Sarah Pidgeon. “These are the wines that our judges loved, and many of them are also achieving great
results on a national scale, so whether you’re familiar with the regions or looking to sample some proven performers, this list offers a learned introduction to some exceptional local wines and growers.” The Hot 62 are ‘the best of the best’ from the 439 entries and represent all six regions within the Limestone Coast zone including Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, Robe, Mount Benson and Mount Gambier. Prices range from $12-$188 a bottle, with a majority of wines selling for under $30. “The variety of entries from across the Limestone Coast sub-regions is a really important indicator of the quality of wines from here, so whether you’re planning your Christmas menu, purchasing gifts or stocking up the cellar for your own festivities, this list will serve as the
ultimate guide,” Sarah said. The ‘Fresh Whites’ section features trophy debutante Raidis Estate, whose 2015 ‘The Kid’ Riesling wowed judge Stuart Watson courtesy of its “clean and crisp” aromatics. Balnaves of Coonawarra also comfortably made the grade after the 2013 Balnaves Coonawarra Chardonnay claimed two trophies, while the 2014 Digiorgio Family Wines Kongorong Riesling which trumped the 2014 show has remained a strong gold medal performer in 2015. For ‘Something Different’, the 2013 Wangolina Tempranillo is well worth a try. The Spanish-style wine was made in Mount Benson from grapes grown in Bordertown, and offers beautiful savoury characters with succulence and vibrancy. Wine show judge and sommelier Patrick White is among its many fans: “It’s a variety which is only just starting to get some traction in the Australian market and when you have well made, balanced and delicious examples it makes your job as a sommelier a lot easier in terms of recommending to the customers,” he said. The Padthaway region gets regular mentions in the ‘Aromatic Shiraz’ category, with Henry’s Drive and Orlando Lawsons worth looking out for, while 2015 wine show darling Wrattonbully shares the spotlight with Coonawarra when it comes to ‘Landmark Cabernets’, with
Peppertree and Stonefields making their presence felt among Coonawarra stalwarts like Brands Laira, Bowen Estate, Majella and Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Festive hosts looking for something special to team with their Christmas roasts will get plenty of inspiration from the list’s ‘Aged to Perfection’ category - for as little as $28, you can enjoy a gold medal-winning 2008 Brands Laira Coonawarra Blockers Cabernet Sauvignon, or for $36, a 2010 Redman Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. The trophy-winning 2006 Casella 1919 Cabernet Sauvignon will set you back a mere $50, proven performer 2000 Zema Estate Family Selection Cabernet Sauvignon remains a steal at $70, while you also can’t go wrong with Bellwether Coonawarra cabernet, with the 2006, 2009 and 2010 vintages all winning gold at this year’s wine show.

LOCAL Local gymnasts jeaping for joy The gymnasts of Blue Lake, Mount Gambier have been flipping, vaulting and bounding on the same equipment for more than 30 years. There is a light at the end of the vault run though, with Holden pledging a grant of $8990 for new equipment through its Home Ground Advantage program. Club manager and coach Christine Hastie said the grant would contribute to a safer learning environment for everyone in the club. “Our club is run solely by volunteers and offers classes to primary schools, children with disabilities and people from refugee and disadvantaged backgrounds,” Christine said. “This grant is a great boost for the club and will allow us to vastly improve facilities for everyone to be involved, regardless of age, ability or experience.” Founded in 1998 as an amalgamation of the two gymnastics clubs in Mount Gambier, Blue Lake Gymnastic Club provides classes that promote physical activity, confidence and self esteem. “We
also conduct a program in which we mentor students to become coaches and judges which in turn, gives back to the club,” she said. Local Holden Dealer Bryce Roberts, of O.G Roberts & CO., welcomed the decision to award the club a grant and is proud to have Blue Lake Gymnastic Club within his dealership catchment. “Local sporting clubs play a really important role within their communities and we are thrilled to help invest in their futures,” Bryce said. “Most of Australia’s great sporting icons started in a local club so it’s great to give kids the opportunity to be the best they can. Whether that’s going on to play competitively or just enjoying the fun of the game.” The Blue Lake Gymnastics Club hosts one major tournament a year, which traditionally provides the majority of its income. Fortunately the club’s instructors are all volunteers but continuing the club for the benefit of its up to 70 students relies on grants such as the Holden
is awarded, with one major grant going to a project worth up to $100,000 in value. Applications for the 2015/16 summer round are now open. The application process is easy and online. Clubs wanting to apply should visit www.holden.com.au/ homegroundadvantage with summer round applications closing on February 28 at 5pm.
Home Ground Advantage program. The club is set to use the $8990 windfall for new uniforms, as well as continuing its purchase of safety matting that it is looking to run throughout the entire floor space of the facility. The club owned building also hosts a
jujitsu club and Colin Cassidy’s boxing troupe. In 2014 Holden committed $5 million over 10 years to its Home Ground Advantage program which provides grants to community-based sporting clubs across Australia. Twice a year, $250,000 of grants
