Innovation set to change the face of the local transport industry Barry Fennell is one half of the brother-sister team that runs local success story Fennell Forestry. Part of keeping the family owned business at the forefront of the timber industry for the past 25 years has been a willingness to embrace innovation and a determination to always find a better way to do things. And Barry, partnering with his sister Wendy and Doug Thorne, has done that with the establishment of a new Mount Gambier based business – Thinwall Trailers Australia. It all started in 2014, when Barry was looking to expand into woodchip haulage and wanting to find trailers that would provide maximum strength, reliability and increased payload. Not satisfied with Australian based options his search went overseas. This led him to Canadian based creative bulk haulage equipment manufacturer Titan Trailers Inc. Long recognised for its job-specific functionality and attention to detail, Titan design all aluminium trailers, using T6 aircraft grade aluminium that provides superior strength whilst remaining light weight. The association with the Canadian manufacturer has been a fruitful one and Barry could see and discussed the potential for Australia on first visit to Titan factory, 3 weeks after first contact was made. “To see transport industry veterans, my father Graham and engineer Doug Thorne, view trailers in Canada for the first time, be absolutely amazed by the level of innovation and engineering and comment “there is nothing like

Phone

this in Australia” highlighted the potential for Australian market” said Barry. That comment has been repeated numerous times by other transport operators across the country when they have viewed the various models that have been imported into Australia. The first trailers imported have covered over 350,000 km each in 14 months, over primarily rough forest and secondary roads, proving themselves up to the demanding task. Titan’s THINWALL technology sees it as the only horizontal smooth side panel that’s 100 percent machine welded from end to end, inside and out. Full length horizontal welds allow better flexing over rough terrain and the hollow core ribs reduce inside punctures and virtually eliminate exterior side wall damage. Thinwall Trailers Australia is the exclusive agent for Titan Trailers. The product line includes platform tippers, fast unloading light and heavy duty walking floors and hopper trailers for agriculture industries. Visit the website at www. thinwalltrailers.com.au to view further details, for enquiries email info@thinwalltrailers.com. au or phone (08) 87253871. Thinwall Trailers Australia is located at 357 Commercial Street West, Mount Gambier.

AT THE CINEMA JOY • DECEMBER 25 Joy is the wild story of a family across four generations centred on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right.

LOCAL Generous donation adds to Friday night fun Miroma Incorporated is a Mount Gambier based not-for-profit organisation that provides services and programs for people of all ages living with disability across South Australia and Western Victoria. One of those programs is a fortnightly Friday night social program that caters for about eight young people with intellectual disabilities. It’s all about having fun as games and music dominate the agenda, and thanks to a generous donation from Western District Employment Access (WDEA), the Mount Gambier based service, established in 1984 by a group of passionate parents, has a whole lot of new games and an impressive sound system to only add to the fun and entertainment in this program. The relationship between Miroma and WDEA is continuing to flourish and the donation, made last month, was just the latest in a series of cooperative approaches, especially in terms of employment and training. WDEA certainly started as an employment service but like Miroma, has evolved over time, providing other services to be more of a one stop shop for those in need. Miroma, too, started as a respite care facility but soon added supported accommodation and school holiday and other community based programs to its repertoire in the past three decades. The WEDA donation of board games and the sound system is certainly proving popular with the Friday Night Social Club. WDEA was established in South West Victorian and

has had a Mount Gambier office since March this year operating with four staff.

Above - Miroma client servies officer Gael Ferguson; WDEA site manager (Mount Gambier) Carmel Grosvenor; Miroma manager Annalise Bates & WDEA employment consulant manager (Mount Gambier) Josh Heaver check out the generous WDEA donation.

LOCAL Capturing Christmas memories with your pets Santa Paws is coming to town to say a very Merry Christmas to your four-legged friends. The South East Animal Welfare League (SEAWL) has teamed up with Mount Gambier Central and Nicole Gordon Photography to make sure your pets are included in your yearly Santa Claus family photo. With part proceeds going towards easing the burden of the daily operational costs of the SEAWL, the fundraising event is a unique way to include the furry members of your family in your Christmas celebrations. “The SEAWL is really excited to be involved in such a fantastic and fun promotion and we are thrilled Mount Gambier Central has chosen to support a local organisation,” SEAWL Committee President Anneliese Bates said. “More than anything, the SEAWL is excited to be working with Mount Gambier Central to ensure all the animals at the SEAWL receive the love and care they need over the festive season. Ms Bates said she hoped the fundraiser would also remind the community of the importance of responsible pet ownership over the Christmas break. “Dogs and cats are incredibly vulnerable during the festive season as they are often purchased as gifts, with many ending up at the SEAWL when they’re no longer cute little puppies or kittens,” she said. “Pets are a lifelong commitment that not only require your time and love, but the significant financial cost of purchasing food and paying for vet visits.” The Santa Clause and Furry Friends photography session costs $15 and includes two 6x4 photos and mount and a free gift. “Mount Gambier Central and Nicole Gordon Photography are proud to be able to support the SEAWL to raise much needed funds for the ongoing costs of caring for hundreds of lost, abandoned and mistreated animals each year,” Mount Gambier Central Centre Manager Jane Read said. “The team at SEAWL do a fabulous job caring and rehoming fury friends and we are pleased to be able to help

a local team of hardworking volunteers.” As well as the Santa Claus pet photography, there will be a SEAWL Wishing Tree with supporters able to purchase their own $2 SEAWL tag for their Christmas tree. Santa Claus and Furry Friends will be held on Monday, December 14 and 21, Tuesday, December 15 and 22. Session by appointment only. To book your session please call 0408 030 698.

LOCAL Loving life on the land They say you can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy, and that’s definitely the case with dairy farmer, Ken Ackerley. Ken was born and raised on a farm near Colac and has spent all his working life on a dairy farm. If everything goes to plan, the 65-year-old will spend the rest of his days on the same farm. The same applies to his wife Jenny who grew up on a beef, sheep and dairy farm near Lavers Hill and likewise has no desire to leave the land. Just the thought of moving to town, let alone a big city, is enough to raise their hackles. “I couldn’t live in the town; I just couldn’t,” Ken says. “I like the freedom here and I still enjoy it.” Jenny is the same. When asked if she would ever consider moving to town the answer is a resounding ‘no’. “Neither of us have ever lived in a town,” she said. “We both grew up on farms and lived all our lives on farms. Our girls all grew up on the farm and it’s the same with our grandkids.” Two of their daughters are involved in the farm partnership and the third lives not far away in Port Campbell. “We’re very lucky,” Jenny says. “Having family growing up on the farm is one of our great pleasures.” Ken and Jenny bought their farm between Timboon and Peterborough in 1981 after earlier managing Ken’s parents’ farm at Colac and share farming in the Heytesbury settlement and Timboon areas. They now milk 500 cows on the home rotary dairy, along with 270 crossbred cows on a second farm run by their daughter and son-inlaw. Ken is the longest standing current member of the Port Campbell Dairy Discussion Group which will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a reunion dinner on January 30 next year. According to Ken, learning from fellow farmers – just like he did - is one of the

OPEN 29/30 DEC & 3 JAN 1.30 - 2.30

MILLICENT

best ways to make headway in the dairy industry. “If young farmers can get around and see a few farms that aren’t too heavily involved in buying feed, it might help them to get back to basics,” he said. Growing grass was a key topic in the early days of the discussion group and the Ackerleys say that remains a vital part of farming today. To combat rising bale feed costs the farm has “upped the ante” this year on home-grown grass. “Costs are the main issue facing farms,” Ken said. “This year we’ve cut our feed costs by more than half. We were bale feeding six kilos on this farm, seven on the other, now we’re feeding three. “We’ve always grown a lot of grass and cut a lot of silage, but this year we’ve concentrated on growing more. We’ve upped the ante again.” The dairy industry has been good to the Ackerleys and they are pleased to support the Legendairy communications initiative so more people understand the appeal of dairying. Now in their 60s, Ken and Jenny are still active on the farm. “We don’t milk but we get involved in everything else,” Ken said. “Most of the management decisions get thrown on my shoulders.”

LOCAL Dartmoor Kindy looks to new approach Dartmoor Children’s Centre will not offer kindergarten services in 2016 due to a lack of numbers for the service. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said it was disappointing that the council operated four-year-old kindergarten and child care services would not run at the centre next year, however plans were being made to retain the facility for other community uses during the 12-month break. “Council received two enrolments for next year’s kindergarten program – unfortunately this number is too low, and the enrolments were received too late to attract department funding to run the service, Cr Oberlander said. Council invited key stakeholders to a community meeting erlier this month to plan for future early learning services at the site, and discuss future-use scenarios. Suggestions included operating a community managed nanny-style childcare service from the centre, or supported parent run playgroup. “Council has been working closely with the community to ensure a workable solution can be found to ensure

Dartmoor families have the same access to early learning services as other communities, Cr Oberlander said. “Although we won’t deliver a kindergarten program next year, within two to five years the projected enrolments are looking positive with a number of families already registering interest. It is important that this site remains functional, whether that is as a community space or as a play centre, until early learning services can be returned to the town in the near future. The council does not want to see this brilliant facility shut down. There is forecast future use and council wants to work with the community to ensure a positive outcome that will support the Dartmoor community into the future. Cr Oberlander invited community members to provide their feedback on use scenarios for Can you give Spot a new home for the the centre over the next new year? 12 months. November 25 – February 16 Of all the printmaking techniques screenprinting is without a doubt the most humble but many artists have used it over a long period to create vibrant, expressive prints. Resulting in large areas of flat colour the technique nonetheless exploits coloured inks like no other technique. It’s clearly read images have resulted in its use industrially but this exhibition demonstrates that its use in the hands of artists enables its true worth to shine.

Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation and Your Eyes Did you know UV and other radiation from the sun can harm your eyes? Extended exposure to the sun’s UV rays has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae, pterygia and photokeratitis that can cause temporary vision loss. New research suggests the sun’s highenergy visible (HEV) radiation — also called “blue light” may increase your long-term risk of macular degeneration. People with low blood plasma levels of vitamin C and other antioxidants especially appear at risk of retinal damage from HEV radiation Dangers of Ultraviolet Radiation to Your Eyes To protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation, sunglasses should block 100 percent of UV rays and also absorb most HEV rays. Frames with a closefitting wraparound style provide the best protection because they limit how much stray sunlight reaches your eyes from above and beyond the periphery of your sunglass lenses. Anyone who spends time outdoors is at risk for eye problems from UV radiation. Risks of eye damage from UV and HEV exposure change from day to day and depend on a number of factors, including: • Geographic location: UV levels are greater in tropical areas near the earth’s equator. The farther you are from the equator, the smaller your risk. • Altitude. UV levels are greater at higher altitudes • Time of day. UV and HEV levels are greater when the sun is high in the sky, typically from 10am.to 2pm. • Setting. UV and HEV levels are greater in wide open spaces, especially when highly reflective surfaces are present, like snow and sand. In fact, UV exposure can nearly double when

UV rays are reflected from the snow. UV exposure is less likely in urban settings, where tall buildings shade the streets. • Medications. Certain medications, such as tetracycline, sulfa drugs, birth control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers, can increase your body’s sensitivity to UV and HEV radiation. Surprisingly, cloud cover doesn’t affect UV levels significantly. Your risk of UV exposure can be quite high even on hazy or overcast days. This is because UV is invisible radiation, not visible light, and can penetrate clouds. Kids Need UV Protection Even More Than Adults It’s especially important for kids to protect their eyes from the sun. Children generally spend much more time outdoors than adults. In fact, some experts say that because children tend to spend significantly more time outdoors than most adults, up to half of a person’s lifetime exposure to UV radiation can occur by age 18. Also, children are more susceptible to retinal damage from UV rays because the lens inside a child’s eye is clearer than an adult lens, enabling more UV to penetrate deep into the eye. Therefore, make sure your kids’ eyes are protected from the sun with good quality sunglasses. Also, encourage your child to wear a hat on sunny days to further reduce UV exposure Tips About Sunglasses and UV Exposure Many misconceptions exist about the right sun protection for your eyes. Keep this tip in mind. Not all sunglasses block 100 percent of UV rays. If you’re unsure about the level of UV protection your sunglasses provide, take them to your optometrist for an evaluation.

every day until Christmas to 5.30pm and 5pm on Sundays. 167, Bay Road, (Riddoch Hwy) Mount Gambier, see the website for details. P.S. As this goes to print The devastating effect of the recent typhoons in the Philippines highlights just how precious life is. For many years Gardenarium and The Limestone Coast Group has supported the villagers along the coastlines of the regions hit for four years in a row, with many of the villagers not even having built new homes from last year’s typhoon. Many of the products we sell are from poor, underdeveloped countries and in particular the range of driftwood creations we have each year are from pieces of driftwood harvested from the beaches by local villagers in the current typhoon hit area, Each village is allowed to harvest a certain amount of driftwood thrown up from the typhoons and craft them into the wonderful pieces we sell from Christmas decorations to spheres, planters and decorative wreathes, some even with shells carefully incorporate - I am continually amazed at their creativity given the adversity.” Calum is urging everyone to dig deep this Christmas by buying a piece of driftwood artwork or ornaments that will last forever. “They are extremely well priced considering the transportation and shipping to us and we feel warm knowing that the proceeds are helping the villagers rebuild their lives,” he said. Items start from very low priced Christmas stars at only $9 so ideal for a Kris Kringle, with even the more intricate piece really far too low priced for the work involved, especially for the western world. One shipping container is still on the water but has pulled up in port as the typhoon continues in the region, meaning many of the pieces we had expected will not land until the New Year, however we still have plenty of stock for the next two weeks. LOCAL Local architects to beautify iconic Mount Gambier building Mount Gambier architectural firm Chapman Herbert Architects has won a design competition to revamp the exterior of the Civic Centre’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, one of the city’s most iconic central buildings. The company won with an innovative concept that reimagined the theatre’s 13 metre fly-tower with an artistic, contemporary design. The City of Mount Gambier and Country Arts SA share ownership of the building and have each contributed fifty percent of the cost, with Country Arts SA’s share coming from funding allocated for critical regional theatre upgrades in the State Government’s budget announced in June. Interested architectural firms were required to apply by pitching ideas in a State-wide design competition with a brief to fix the fly tower and develop the lower levels of the building as a second stage. The submissions were then assessed by a selection panel of representatives from the City of Mount Gambier and Country Arts SA. Country Arts SA’s CEO Steve Saffell is pleased with the result, given the firm’s past work. “We are delighted that a firm so well-recognised in both Mount Gambier and Adelaide will be working on the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre,” Mr Saffell said. “People in the South East are already familiar with Chapman Herbert Architects’ work from recent major redevelopments such as the Main Corner and City Hall, and we’re pleased with the high standards they’ll bring to the project.” Chapman Herbert Architects will now undertake the design and development proposal of cladding the external surfaces of the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre fly-tower including budget costs, timeframes and discussions with State Heritage to ensure the design proposals meet with the desired character. “I’m looking forward to the Helpmann having an artistic makeover on the outside to better represent the arts going on within the building,” said Frank Morello, Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre

Venue Manager. “It’s a 32 year old structure, so this upgrade to the exterior is necessary.” The anticipated completion date is September 2016.

Above - Mount Gambier City Council operational services director Daryl Sexton with Sir Robert Helmpann Theatre venue manager Frank Monger are looking forward to the theatre facelift.

Motor Road service now available for cyclists Each year RAA is called on to fix more than 23,000 flat tyres on cars, and now they’ll repair your bicycle tyres as well. RAA Senior Manager Mobility and Automotive Policy Mark Borlace said given the increasing popularity of cycling, it only makes sense to expand our roadside assistance to cover bicycles. “We can help with all of the basics, whether it’s a punctured tyre, or a mechanical repair like a broken chain or a loose pedal that needs tightening,” said Mr Borlace. “If we’re unable to repair the bike at the roadside, we will arrange for a taxi to get the member and their bike somewhere safe or to a place of repair. “And if your children are our riding with you, of course we’ll look after them as well.” The service is available to all Road Service members in Adelaide and regional SA. “For decades, we’ve helped our members regardless of which car they’re out driving in, and last year we expanded our service to assist members who use mobility scooters too,” said Mr Borlace. “This move has been embraced by our members, after receiving almost 400 call outs in the past year, with 150 of those for tyres that needed to be repaired or replaced. “In the same way it has given peace of mind to mobility scooter users, we hope this new service will allow people to enjoy riding their bike knowing that if they were to get a

flat tyre or a broken chain that our Patrols will be there to help them out.” After getting not one, but two flat tyres while out riding his bike one day, cyclist Tom Williamson says it’ll be great to have someone to call on. “At first it was all fine because I had a spare tube for my tyre with me so I could replace it – but then I realised the other tyre was flat as well,” said Mr Williamson. “In the end, I had to call my partner and wait for him to come and get me, and I had to organise to get another bike tube before I could ride again. “I use my bike every day to get to work, so it was a real hassle.” To find out more about Road Service for bicycles, phone (08)8202 4610, visit raa.com. au or drop into your local RAA Shop.
