COVER
Santa’s coming to the Mount Gambier Marketplace? Everyone is excited! Santa is coming to the Mount Gambier Marketplace! On Saturday December the 12th Mayfair Singers and Hype Dancers will welcome Santa. The festivities start at 10am and there will be free face painting and giveaways for Children. Lime FM Community Radio will have a free silent disco and be broadcasting live. Santa will arrive with the assistance of the MFS on their Fire Truck at 11am. Santa will have giveaways for the children that come to greet him. Professional photographers Graham Spring and Frank Monger standing by to capture the precious moments. This year Mount Gambier Marketplace has enlisted the assistance of the Hallmont Community Shed to build Santa’s Wrapping Workshop. The Hallmont Community Shed provides a meeting place for residents to strengthen friendships and support and is open to both men and women.
Phone
The Mount Gambier Marketplace provided a donation to the Hallmont Community Shed to contribute towards tools and materials for future projects.(Front Page – pictured Mount Gambier Marketplace Centre Manager Andrew Tye with representatives of the Hallmont Community Shed at the new Santa’s Wrapping workshop) Santa’s Wrapping Workshop is open daily for gift wrapping for everyone from the 1st of December to Christmas Eve. Local sporting groups and Charites will run the Wrapping Workshop and receive the donations for the gifts they wrap. The Mount Gambier Marketplace is collaborating with Lime FM Community Radio station to provide this opportunity for local groups to raise some vitally needed funding while providing a service to everyone. You can buy your gifts from the Marketplace or bring them from home and have them wrapped for a small donation and support a local group. Our very successful Sensitive Santa Program will be running again this year. We will be opening early so that children with special needs can meet Santa in an environment that is away from the normal hustle and bustle associated with a busy shopping centre. Some children last year met Santa for the very first time and were very excited. Parents were very thankful for this unique opportunity provided by the Mount Gambier Marketplace. The Centre recognises the difficulties faced by parents during this time of the year and is pleased to be able to offer more places this year. Sensitive Santa will be here on
Sunday the 13th and Sunday the 20th of December, between the hours of 8am and 10am. Spaces are limited and bookings are essential. Please call Centre Management on (08)8724 8798 during office hours to book. Mount Gambier Marketplace is decorated ready for Santa to arrive. We would like to thank the Junior Primary children of Melaleuca Park, Reidy Park, MacDonald Park, Mil-Lel and Tenison Woods primary schools for each decorating a tree in the Centre, they look wonderful. The children enjoyed making their decorations and show great creativity. They also attended the Marketplace to decorate their tree and were excited to do so. The public are invited to vote for their favourite tree on the Mount Gambier Marketplace’s Facebook site and we have received many votes for the best tree. Big W has a Giving Tree for those in the community that are less fortunate. All gifts/proceeds go to ac.care to make Christmas special for a family in need. December is a busy month and it can be stressful to get everything
done in time for Christmas. The Mount Gambier Marketplace has extended trading hours to make it easier for you to complete your Christmas shopping. Please visit our website or like our Facebook page to check the opening hours of specialty stores and Woolworths and Big W. Speciality Stores will be open until 9pm, Wednesday 23rd December. Hope to see you here! Mount Gambier Marketplace Centre Management

THEY SAID WHAT? “...When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life...” John Lennon
LOCAL Mount Gambier softballers the top in the State The Mount Gambier High School (MGHS) 8/9 Knockout Softball side has been crowned State champions after its recent success in Adelaide. This is on the back of winning the open title earlier in the year. The team, coached by Samantha Brown, travelled to Adelaide to play at Softball Headquarters – Barratt Reserve West Beach in the State finals. The team consisted of a mix of players, some with softball and baseball experience including two State softballers in Imogen Walker and Georgia Hood, as well as no softball experience at all. The team comprised Imogen Walker, Georgia Hood, Tayla Wilson-Smith, Isabella Morale, Mel Deak, Eliza Hunter, Claire Day, Emmerson Hann, Sara Smith and Sophie Modra. The opening game of the finals saw MGHS dominate Seaton from the first inning scoring three runs to nil. Imogen Walker pitched a great game whilst Imogen, Bella Morale and Georgia Hood starred with the bat. MGHS had nine safehits for the game, which resulted in an 8–0 final score. Game two started slowly against Blackwood with the girls finding it a challenge to bat against a slower, looping pitcher. Once the girls focussed, they batted strongly with Imogen, Bella, Georgia and Tayla Wilson-Smith all having solid batting performances. Imogen was again consistent on the mound, holding Blackwood to no score for most of the game. Emmerson Hann was a star in this game, with an injured Bella at first base she chased down all that came in the direction of 2nd and 1st. There was also a fantastic outfield relay that saw minimal runs scored. Blackwood did cause a scare in the final inning scoring 5 runs, but as we were in front with 7 runs and had the last at bat MGHS won with a reverted score of 7–0. The side was scheduled to play Unley in game three and due to their opponent’s equal
success – winning both their games – it became the grand final. After winning the toss, MGHS had a slow start and both teams finished the first innings with one run a piece. MGHS was led in the field by Georgia Hood who was on fire on the pitching mound with 10 strike outs for the game. Imogen starred with the bat having three safe hits and with catching duties, helped to ensure no further runs were scored by Unley for the game. MGHS was handed the bat in the bottom of the fifth and made it count, adding four runs to the score with four safe hits in a row from Georgia, Claire Day, Sophie and Bella and MGHS closed out the grand final winning 9–1. The win meant MGHS was 8/9 Knockout Softball State Champions for 2015. Best players for the grand final were Georgia Hood with her impressive efforts on the mound and three safehits, Walker with three safe hits (two doubles) as well as the catching duties and Sophie Modra for her safe hit and outfield catching. The most consistent batter for the finals series was Walker, having a batting average of 0.888 (eight out of nine safe hits for the day). The MGHS side managed to score 24 runs and only had 6 scored against them for the day

Soon • MORRIS GLEITZMAN I hoped the Nazis would be defeated. And they were. I hoped the war would be over. And it was. I hoped we would be safe. But we aren’t. Soon continues the incredibly moving story of Felix, a Jewish boy still struggling to survive in the wake of the liberation of Poland after the end of World War Two. Morris Gleitzman grew up in England and came to Australia when he was sixteen. After university he worked for ten years as a screenwriter. Then he had a wonderful experience. He wrote a novel for young people. Now, after 36 books, he’s one of Australia’s most popular children’s authors.

LOCAL Local student’s art to be featured on MP Christmas card The final judging is in for the inaugural Christmas Card Competition held by Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP. In October this year Mr Pasin invited all primary school students to submit artwork under the theme ‘Christmas in the South East’; the winner of which would have their design featured on Mr Pasin’s Christmas cards. “We’ve had a fantastic response, with over 280 entries coming in across the electorate.” Mr Pasin said. “The standard was exceptional, and I congratulate all those students who took the time and effort to create an artwork that demonstrated what Christmas means to them. I would like to offer my congratulations to all the primary school students who submitted an artwork as part of this competition.” The South East winner was Sophie Wight, from Tenison Woods College, whose ‘Christmas in the South East’ design will feature within Mr Pasin’s Christmas card. Miss Wight will receive a copy of the Christmas card to keep as a memento along with a small prize.
Educator honoured with Wattle Range award The quality of early education in the Wattle Range Council district was apparent with five local educators nominated for the prestigious Dianne Manhood Memorial Award at the annual Limestone Coast Early Years Forum last month. The Award, sponsored by the Wattle Range Council, was introduced in 2012 in memory of Dianne Manhood, well respected community leader and long serving Director of the Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre. Recognised for their ‘Commitment to Excellence in Early Years’ were award nominees Jade McDonald of Learning Together, Donna Barber of Millicent North Kindergarten, Teagan Harvey and Naomi Aston of Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre and the 2015 Award recipient Tracey Phillips (pictured) of McArthur Park Kindergarten. Tracey, who
worked under the guidance of Dianne for a number of years, is a passionate advocate of children and families in the community and inspires innovation in her field. She is the worthy recipient of the $500 prize for on-going professional development and was honoured to receive the accolade.

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Passionfruit Lemon Whoopie Pies 125g butter, softened; 1 cup caster sugar; 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon rind; 1 egg; 2 cups plain flour; 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda; 1/2 cup buttermilk Passionfruit butter 2 passionfruit; 50g butter; 2 eggs, lightly whisked; 1/2 cup caster sugar; 1 tablespoon lemon juice; 1 teaspoon cornflour Lemon icing 1 1/2 cups icing sugar mixture 2-3 teaspoons lemon juice Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 4 oven trays with baking paper. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter, sugar and lemon rind in a medium bowl until pale and creamy. Add the egg and beat until well combined. Add the flour, bicarbonate of soda and buttermilk, in alternate batches, and stir until just combined. Spoon level tablespoons of mixture onto the lined tray, 5cm apart, allowing room for spreading. Bake 2 trays, swapping halfway through cooking, for 8-10 minutes or until puffed and golden. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining trays. Meanwhile.
to make the passionfruit butter, place the passionfruit pulp, butter, egg, sugar, lemon juice and cornflour in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens. Transfer to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to cool completely. To make the lemon icing, place the icing sugar in a medium bowl. Gradually add lemon juice, until a thick paste forms, adding more lemon juice or hot water to form a spreading consistency. Place whoopies, base-side up, on a clean work surface. Spread a little of the passionfruit butter over the base of half the cakes. Spread a little of the lemon icing over the top of the remaining cakes. Sandwich 1 passionfruit butter cake with 1 icing cake and place on a serving plate. Repeat with remaining cakes.

CONGRATULATORY MESSAGES
This year saw the launch of “Mount Gambier Out of The Box” a Facebook page to engage the community to explore potential investment opportunities in the Mount Gambier electorate. Some of the ideas have been unique but it was hoped that each idea would generate avid discussions as to what is possible for our region. The luge in the Valley Lake precinct was very popular for the thrill seekers and the street art along the Railway Lands precinct was also well received. I encourage the community to continue to submit ideas to the Facebook SDJH RU DOWHUQDWLYHO\ FDOO LQWR P\ RI´FH www.facebook.com/mountgambieroutsidethebox
If you know someone who will be celebrating a 90th, 95th, 100th birthday or a couple who will be celebrating their 50th, 60th or 70th Wedding Anniversary they can receive a congratulatory message from the Premier of South Australia, Her Majesty the Queen, the Governor General, Governor, the Prime Minister, Federal and State Leaders and their local Member of Parliament.

Art of the Screenprint • HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON November 25 – February 16 Of all the printmaking techniques screenprinting is without a doubt the most humble but many artists have used it over a long period to create vibrant, expressive prints. Resulting in large areas of flat colour the technique nonetheless exploits coloured inks like no other technique. It’s clearly read images have resulted in its use industrially but this exhibition demonstrates that its use in the hands of artists enables its true worth to shine.
ADVERTORIAL I Alexander Cameron Suites Gold List rating for local motel Powered by millions of past guest reviews from hundreds of websites around the world, the inaugural Star Ratings Gold List of Australian accommodation is the ultimate holiday form guide. The Star Ratings Gold List celebrates only those properties who continue to voluntarily hold themselves to independent quality standards and who almost always exceed their guests’ expectations. Alexander Cameron Suites was recognised as one of the best motels in this tourism region and South Australia. The inaugural Star Ratings Gold List of Australian accommodation showcases the best hotels, motels, serviced apartments, self catering, hosted accommodation and caravanholiday parks around the country. Powered by ReviewPro, a global leader
in the provision of guest intelligence solutions, the Star Ratings Gold List is based on aggregated guest reviews from more than 100 websites in 45 different languages. Alexander Cameron Suites was selected as 1st in the Limestone Coast Tourism Region and 4th in the State best motel operators. “The rules are pretty simple,” said Nanette Wallace. “We are assessed for an official Star Rating against independent quality standards and we have more than 25 online reviews across all of the major travel websites.” According to Star Ratings Australia, travellers plan their holidays carefully and visit between 20-40 websites before they book. That’s why the Star Ratings Gold List is unique because it draws online reviews from multiple sites, not just one. “From the opinions of those who have actually stayed at our property to more than 200 criteria that are used to determine an official Star Rating; our future guests can trust that we will do everything we can to exceed their expectations,” said Nanette Wallace. “We are delighted to be recognised by our customers and thank all our staff to the attention to detail.” P: 08 8737 2200 F: 08 8737 2210 23-25 Church St, Penola, SA 5277 info@alexandercameronsuites.com.au www.alexandercameronsuites.com.au

LOCAL Guest artists confirmed for Generations in Jazz festival A world-famous American college big band and Australian music icon Kate Ceberano will perform at the 2016 Generations in Jazz (GIJ) festival being held in SA’s Limestone Coast. The One O’Clock Lab Band from the University of North Texas has produced more than 60 recordings with an unprecedented six Grammy nominations, and will head to Mount Gambier for a series of concerts and workshops from May 6-8, 2016. Generations in Jazz chairman, James Morrison, has described the festival’s headline act as a major coup. “If you asked almost anyone over the last 70 years who are the best college big band in the world, the answer would most likely be The One O’clock Lab Band. The opportunity to hear such an amazing band of young musicians live is fantastic; even better, we will have workshops with them and the chance to hear how they do what they do,” he said. With a name inspired by its regular rehearsal time, the One O’Clock Lab Band was established in 1946, and exceptional individual musicianship and tight ensemble performance quickly became its hallmark. Widely dubbed the best big band in history, the late jazz trumpeter and educator Clark Terry was among its many fans: “Every top professional musician in every major studio in the country is well aware of what is happening at North Texas,” he said. “When a guy walks in and says he graduated from North Texas and played in the One O’Clock Lab Band…well, they just don’t have to say any more.” The One O’Clock Lab Band will make its first appearance in Mount Gambier 30 years after it first toured Australia at the GIJ Welcome Concert on Friday, May 6. It will also join the regional city’s own James Morrison Academy Jazz Orchestra on stage the following evening to create a huge, 40-piece band which will also feature special guest vocalist Kate Ceberano. “We are thrilled to announce that Kate Ceberano will be joining the GIJ Jazz Orchestra and singing everything from the blues to some funky grooves,” Mr Morrison said. “This
multi awardwinning singer has achieved stardom in genres from pop to soul to jazz and is going to lift the roof off the pavilion at GIJ. If you haven’t heard Kate with a big band, prepare yourself for something special.” Other guest artists confirmed for the three-day event include Australian trumpeter, Mat Jodrell, and saxophonists Troy Roberts and Jeff Clayton from the USA. Australian Kyra Schwarz will be on trombone and sousaphone, and Ross Irwin, Carl Mackey and Phil Stack will also make a welcome return. Further cementing GIJ’s reputation as an international event, organisers are also thrilled to announce that the first overseas school has just registered for 2016. After dominating both the NZ and Auckland youth jazz festivals, New Zealand’s Lynfield College is preparing to showcase its talents down under in the Blue Lake City. GIJ publicist Jim Kirkup said Lynfield College’s registration has added weight to predictions of record-breaking school entry numbers in 2016. “We’re expecting more than 100 secondary schools and 200+ bands to take part in this world-class festival, and audiences are simply going to be blown away by the talent on stage,” he said. Local schools, sporting clubs, community groups and home owners are being asked to join the region’s motels, caravan parks and bed and breakfast operators in playing host to up to 4000 young musicians and support crews during the May 6-8 event.

I’m not at all a fan of this time of the year. I don’t mind the idea of Christmas itself, but I don’t enjoy a lot of the things that come with it. I thought I’d share with you all of the things I don’t like about Christmas. I don’t like positive and enthusiastic people. I’m generally of the opinion that enthusiastic people are a little simple. They don’t understand how hard life is because they’re not smart enough. They’re bad enough ordinarily but at this time of the year they particularly grate on me. This may have something to do with how tired and grumpy I am by December. The whole present giving thing doesn’t help my state of mind at all. Firstly, present giving involves time. You have to make the time to purchase the gift. You generally will need to go to the local shops at a time of the year when they are utterly chaotic and full of other people who are in selfish mindsets. There’s also a pressure that comes with picking a gift. You know the person receiving the gift is going to be judging the quality of the gift. Do they like it? Is it similar in quality and monetary value to the gift they have given you? You don’t want to go cheapskate. There’s not many worse feelings than receiving an extremely thoughtful, unique gift from a friend who has clearly put a great deal of thought into finding something perfect and knowing that they’re about to open the envelope you put an iTunes voucher in for them. I think we overdo gifts in general, mind you. We really don’t need
to give so many gifts and we don’t need to gift to so many people. Half of the stuff we give people really don’t need. We used to give gifts to friends and family and now we’re giving to every man and their dog. omeone teaches your kid swimming, which you pay them good money to do, and for some reason it has become expected that you would buy them a box of Cadbury Favourites. It’s just gotten over the top. I don’t like decorating either. Donna has deciding that Christmas Pageant day is the day we will decorate the house and our tree each year. Unfortunately this happens to be the time of the year when I am most busy with my day job and often an unpleasantly hot day. I have no interest in laying lines of lights on my roof on a thirty degree day when I have other work that needs to be done. Don’t even get me started on what it does to my power bill. Having children doesn’t add much to the day in my experience either. With children the day starts at about 4am when they decide everyone needs to get out of bed and start this present business. Kids don’t have a filter in their tiny little heads so they’ll make it abundantly clear that the gifts they received really didn’t meet their expectations. It also seems to be a time of the year when there’s a fair bit of sickness around. Last year our son Shaquille woke up with gastro. We believe that Santa took him for a trip to India during the night and he overindulged in curry. We were getting presents all day but neither of us
wanted to unwrap them. The one thing that probably saves the whole thing is food. Realistically you can justify eating anything you want and as much of it as you want. That’s not just for meals on Christmas Day either. You can do that at any occasion you are part of that has the word “Christmas” part of it. End of year Christmas shows qualify as a time where you can enforce this rule with absolutely no guilt. I think you can pretty much extend it to the whole month of December to be honest. I’m sorry you’ve all had to read this but I do feel a little bit better now that I’ve gotten that out of my system. You can e-mail your Christmas greetings to robbietansel@gmail. com

LOCAL Relative rookie wins toastmasters title Last month, Naracoorte Toastmasters took part in a Toastmasters area contest for the first time in more than 20 years, and returned home with a surprise victory. Some members of the club travelled to Aldinga to take part in the contest and everyone that took part acquitted themselves well, given it was the first time that they had taken part in area contests. The biggest surprise of the day came in the final contest for the international category. Adrian Jameson has only been a member of the club since April this year, and stepped up to be president in July. He was the final speaker in the contest, which had several veteran speakers, who had already won awards earlier in the day. In keeping with convention, the winners are announced in reverse order and Adrian’s Naracoorte Toastmasters club colleagues were disappointed when Adrian (pictured) didn’t sneak into third or second place. Imagine their surprise when Adrian was announced the winner. “We were here to find out what contests were all about since our club hasn’t competed for over 20 years,” Adrian said. “My first thought was - what? Really? How did that happen? Has he said the wrong name? But then I was given the trophy. For someone like myself who has dyslexia, reading and writing can be a challenge. I’m very happy about this victory and it’s been possible because of the support of my club.” Winning the area contest means that Adrian will represent his Area C9 in the Division International contest in March next year. The winner of the Division contest goes into the District
contest, and the winner from there goes to the World Champion of Public Speaking contest in the United States. Naracoorte Toastmasters meet in both Mount Gambier and Naracoorte, twice a month. For more information about Naracoorte Toastmasters please call Rob on 0428 374 362 or visit http://naracoorte. toastmastersclubs.org

Huge Christmas Library Market When the Mount Gambier Library decided that it was no longer able to organise the popular Library Market, Lakes Rotary stepped in to assist. Now known as the Mount Gambier Library Market presented by Lakes Rotary, it is held on the second Sunday of the month from October through March from 10am until 2pm. The many stalls spread from the library verandah to the lawn area of the Cave Gardens. The emphasis is put on products that are handmade and stallholders come from as far afield as Portland, Naracoorte, and Beachport, as well as locally. The product range is very diverse and includes candles, scents, childrens clothing, jewellery, plants, baked goods, glass mosaics and more. It is the ideal place to purchase a unique Christmas gift. The next market will be this Sunday and will be bigger and better than ever with more than 60 stalls displaying their wares. The library will be hosting carol singing for young children from 11.30 till 12.30. and Santa will be visiting between 11 and 12 and will be handing out bags of lollies. A number of young singers will be providing entertainment. There is plenty of food and drinks for sale and shady lawns to sit on while having lunch. Rotary supports many local services and profits from the market are used to this end. Further information regarding the market can be obtained from Rob on 0498 756 301
LOCAL State award for determined young twelve year old Twelve year old Mount Gambier youngster Jesse (pictured right) has returned from the Novita Community Achievement Awards with the prestigious Margory Head Achievement Award. The award is in honour of Margory Head, a person who has spent more than 40 years of her life dedicated to improving the lives of children with disabilities within regional South Australia. The Marjory Head Achievement Award acknowledges a regional Novita client aged 12 to 18, who has overcome significant challenges to be able to achieve their personal goals in order to participate fully in their community. Jesse was honoured for striving hard to achieve his independence, a goal shared by many on the cusp of their teens, but for Jesse there are some additional challenges to consider. With cerebral palsy, Jesse has complex physical challenges which limits control over his limbs, particularly his upper body. He is currently unable to use speech for communication. For most of his life, Jesse has been reliant on others for all activities of daily
living. A major challenge for him was his difficulty at being able to hold his head up – about one minute was his maximum. Through persistence and daily practice, Jesse has gained strength in his head, neck and trunk, to enable him to operate three switches. This has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for him, including his independence in operating his powered Can you help the SEAWL find Pup a loving wheelchair. BOOK OF THE WEEK RAIN MUSIC • DI MORRISEY Rain Music is inspired by Di’s adventures in Far North Queensland - its characters, its forgotten history, its modern dilemmas. Brother and sister Ned and Bella Chisholm are struggling with a family tragedy that has set them on opposite paths. After taking off to pursue his musical dreams in Far North Queensland, Ned disappears. When Bella goes in search of him, she finds herself in remote Cooktown, the isolated, little-known gem of the far north of Australia, and a place where both Ned and Bella’s lives will be dramatically changed forever. lifestyle1.net | 35 edit - novitas award.indd 1

NETBALL State selection for Western Border stars
Tayla Wilkinson
North Gambier’s Sienna Allen and former East Gambier player Mary Wilson, who this year moved to Adelaide to attend Scotch College on a scholarship, have both been named in the South Australian Under 17 State Netball team. Sienna (pictured right) is a rangy defender who has been a star on the rise for the past two seasons and was part of the South Australian Country Championship winning Western Border Under 17 team. She played as a permanent member of North Gambier’s undefeated, premiership winning A Reserve line-up and also played a role in the A Grade squad. Allen is now well and truly on the radar of Netball SA talent scouts, as she has also become part of the Garville State League and Reserves training squad, which means the usual regular trips to Adelaide for training and games, once the season starts, which will now be added to with the State training journeys to ETSA Park. Strong over the shot and a tough rebounder, Allen has improved her agility and with the extra top level development she is now receiving at Garville and State level, she will only further improve. Mary made her State League debut this season for Oakdale Phoenix and was a regular member of the State League Reserves line-up. The talented goaler’s selection at Under 17 level backs up her representation at the same age level last year and Under 15 Schoolgirls the year before, when she also represented Australia. The 2016 selection is Sienna’s first foray into the tri-colours. Former Kowree-Naracoorte-Tatiara teenager Maisie Nankivell, who was a team mate of Mary’s in the past two seasons at State level, is also in the 12-player 2016 Under 17 team where she is a clever midcourter with a reliable pass and hard running ability. The team will play at the national championships in Perth from April 10-17.

LOCAL Quirky competition delivers festive spirit The Penola and Coonawarra District should have no shortage of gifts delivered to them this year, judging by the number of Santas expected to pop up around the region. Almost 100 businesses and families throughout Penola and the Coonawarra district are expected to enter the annual “Stuffed Santa” competition, an initiative driven by the Penola Business Association. Now in its fourth year, the event is growing in stature and popularity with both locals and visitors. “Balnaves of Coonawarra got the ball rolling five years ago with a quirky life-size creation on the Riddoch Highway showing Santa falling into their hedge,” said organiser Deb Redman, a member of the Penola Business Association. “From there, the idea grew like topsy, with last year seeing more than 80 entries garnering strong, friendly rivalry between the locals,” she said. Coonawarra is recognised as one of Australia’s premium red wine districts, which together with the cultural hub of Penola township, draws thousands of visitors from Australia and internationally. Now, there’s even more reason to visit. Across the region, Santas can be found steering gliders, driving tractors, perched on swing sets, and even sitting atop an outside dunny. Naturally, many Santas are seen indulging in a glass of Coonawarra’s finest drop whilst lounging in barrels and baths amongst the wineries. And true to form, these Aussie Santas are often spotted cooking barbeques in the vineyards and sipping lattes in the main street. The competition exemplifies the region’s community spirit, showcases the imaginative and artistic flair of the locals and nutures a healthy dose of rivalry. With close to thirty Cellar Doors along Coonawarra’s Riddoch Highway, there’s an abundance of friendly rivalry between the wineries too, where Santas can be seen surfing on winery rooftops, steering reindeer made from vine cuttings, piloting planes designed from barrels, pruning vineyards, and even driving a go-cart up a chimney made of pallets. Increasingly, many farming families in the district have also embraced the idea. Amongst the most impressive was last year’s creation of an oversize ‘Mega-Santa’ using 200 litre drums and a rainwater tank. Others employ old utes, go-carts, hay bales and even the local Coonawarra shelter shed in their designs. Driving its popularity is the incredible response from visitors to the region – and those inadvertently passing through - commenting to local business owners and using social media to share their enjoyment of this fun approach to Christmas. Over time the word has spread, with the competition now drawing increasing numbers of visitors to the region for this event alone. Today, it attracts sponsors and prizes, with competitors battling it out for the kudos of taking home the title of overall winner. Over the years judges have included the Local Mayor, the Citizen of the Year and a Federal Minister. “With the Penola township and Coonawarra region being a seven day a week option for wine tasting, shopping and dining, the ‘Stuffed Santas’ are an added attraction for our visitors,” said Ms Redman. “We hope that people take this opportunity to come and see the amazing creations on display,”. Santas will pop up in the Penola Coonawarra region from early December.
