New sponsorship deal for motorcross freestyler There’s nothing boring about Factory FMX – a locally established and run freestyle motorcross team that performs death defying stunts and choreographed routines. Set up by local daredevil Josh Burdon, the Millicent hometown hero returned to perform at his local show for this first time in years last year and returned again with the Factory FMX team last month. It kickstarted a busy time for the motorcross maniacs, who have also since performed at Mount Gambier’s post-Christmas Parade family fun day – the Party in the Park. They are the headline act at the KimberlyClark Christmas Party, are performing at the Millicent Christmas Parade on Christmas Eve and returning to Mount
Gambier on New Year’s Eve for the Outlet Music Festival at Blue Lake Sports Park. “We are then pretty busy right through until winter,” Josh said. “We have a lot of field days and bits and pieces going on.” Something else they have going on is the securing of a new sponsor – award winning Mount Gambier based business Gordon Refrigeration. Owned by Mount Gambier’s Luke Reichelt, Gordon Refrigeration was inducted into the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Hall of fame in 2012, and has built its strong reputation over the past six decades on not just quality service but also strong community support. Luke sponsors a number of sporting and community groups, including major sponsor of
Centrals Soccer Club juniors and a valued sponsor of West Gambier Football Club, West Gambier Cricket Club and a number of Upper South East groups thanks to Gordon Refrigeration’s association with Naracoorte, where it employs four people since opening its doors in August last year. Gordon Refrigeration employs nine staff in Mount Gambier. Luke has been in the refrigeration and air conditioning game for more than two decades and is a qualified A Class electrician. The father of two was born in Mount Gambier and aside from five years working in Queensland, Luke has lived his whole life in Mount Gambier. He bought the family operated Gordon Refrigeration, which was established by Oliver Gordon in 1956, in 2004, when he was just 25. Luke’s partnership with Factory FMX is just another example of his willingness to back community initiatives.

It seems there is no stopping Victorian teenager Thomas Hynes (right), who has run and won his fourth consecutive SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run title. Bettering his 2014 time by nine seconds, Thomas left the field in his wake on Sunday morning, winning by more than two minutes from Reece Wright and Steven Maxwell, who was a further two minutes back in third. The 2015 winning time was 35.21. Headline act Luke Versace – the 2014 Stawell Gift champion – run the 6.8km event and finished in a time of 39.38. The women’s 10.4km was taken out by Alison Wilson, while Amechai Bawden took out the 6.8km male title with Michelle Clarke taking out the female event. State athletics representative Hannah Elliott won the 3.2km (female) with Finn Johnson posting the winning time for the male competitors. 1048 people took to the three courses on offer on Sunday morning for what was the sixth Blue Lake Fun Run. Run by the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes, the fun run doubles as a community fundraiser with the club donating proceeds to local projects and groups. A number of schools, fitness groups and businesses again entered teams in the fun run with Penola Primary School and Kangaroo Inn Area School, long time supporters of the event, again entering in huge numbers. a progressive and caring council our region and it was a great opportunity to showcase what our region has to offer. Co-investment and growing reginal jobs must be the main driver behind council’s approach to increase proactivity and the prosperity of local businesses and our community as a whole.
Port MacDonnell Marine Infrastructure Project
Community Update Mayor’s column 12 months has passed since our last local government elections. We have had a very busy but productive year at District Council of Grant and in Local Government as a whole. Local Government and State Government relations, including our current opposition, has been and will be tested between now and the elections due to decisions that are being made that will impact on us in the future. As a council and a region we will need to work to resolve some of these issues.
Remembrance I think the majority of us are in a position where we have been touched either personally or through those we know, by the loss of loved ones during service to Australia. Attendance at ceremonies for both the Police Remembrance Day in on 29 September, and Remembrance Day on 11 November, remind me to stop, consider and be thankful for the level of protection we are afforded by these service people and what a great place Australia is to live, work and raise a family. We have in this region very committed volunteers who continue to support our community including SES, CFS and First Responder Units. Thank you to all of you who give freely of your time to serve our communities and protect life and property.
National Timber Councils Association Council continues to be active in forestry and timber industry issues and continues to be a

member of the National Timber Councils Association (NTCA). I have attended several Forestry events this year – the NTCA Industry conference was held in Melbourne in April and the Future of Forestry Investment conference was held late September Sydney. I also continue to be active on the NTCA Executive Committee. Through these various groups and meetings, Council is able to ensure it keeps up-to-date and informed on issues and happenings within the timber and forestry industries and be on the front foot to identify any opportunities which may arise. The Green Triangle Freight Action Plan is currently being updated so that we can, as local government bodies from SA and Victoria advocate and leverage funding through partnership with SA & Victoria State Governments along with the Federal Government to ensure our roads are upgraded and are fit for purpose.
Economic Development Council continues to be involved in seeking out markets and economic development opportunities. There has been a heavy focus this year on working with China to explore these opportunities. Most of you would be aware I travelled to China as part of a delegation led by our Premier in May. Since then, we have had Chinese delegations visit our region. I attended the China Business Migration Exploratory Visit to Adelaide on Friday 27 November at which we had the opportunity to take along some of our region’s finest produce and a couple of local businesses. This event was attended by a delegation of Chinese investors, people who are interested in co-investment and partnership opportunities with businesses in

The upgrade of the Port MacDonnell Marine Facilities was completed on-time and under budget. The $2.7m upgrade included a complete reconstruction with a new 4-lane boat ramp, extension of the commercial wharf, two floating pontoons, upgraded entrance road and carpark, new concrete paths, upgraded lighting in the carpark, and installation of private infrastructure for fuel facilities, using a majority of local contractors to complete the project. The new marine facilities are great for the Port MacDonnell recreational and commercial sectors alike, and I would like to thank everyone who worked hard to achieve the success and outcomes for this project along with our own staff who assisted from start to the finish at the official opening.
Advocacy Council continues to advocate to State and Federal Governments on matters of importance to our community. The State Government announced they would be removing Pensioner Concessions from Council rates from 1 July 2015. Council joined all local government bodies across the State to protest and lobby for its reinstatement. Through the concerted effort of Local Government and our communities, the State announced on 15 May 2015 that while they wouldn’t pay the concession to Local Government, they instead introduced the Cost of Living Concession that would be paid directly to pensioners and concession card holders. NMR levies are about to increase as is our emergency services levy. Council is currently working with the LGA both at a local level and a state level to fight these increases. Royalties for rubble is another cost to Councils that will reduce the amount we can spend on our local road infrastructure.
Emergency Services Reform Council continues to work with volunteers to ensure the best outcome for them through this process.

Country Cabinet We recently had the opportunity of hosting Country Cabinet in the Limestone Coast region for three days from 22-24 November. Country Cabinet is an initiative that sees the Premier and Cabinet Ministers visit three regions per
Minister for Sustainability, Environment & Conservation the Hon Ian Hunter MLC at Carpenter Rocks Hall year until 2017. It was a jampacked three days with many events scheduled during this period. It was great to see so many people turn out to speak to our Premier and Ministers about the issues that are affecting you our community at the Forum and BBQ on the afternoon of Sunday 22 November. Thank you to all of those who took the time to come along and express your thoughts and concerns at this important event. It is rare that we have the opportunity to give these Government bodies a first-hand account of the challenges and issues we face in our region and to put a personal face to the decisions they make that affect us. I commend you for being involved and for your professionalism.
We need, as a community and Council, to follow up on our concerns and conversations with the Ministers to get the outcomes we deserve. As 2015 draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank you, our community, for everything you do to help make our Council area a great place to live. I also want to acknowledge all of our community groups, progress associations, volunteers, along with our staff and our many residents. I wish you all an enjoyable and safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year and trust that you each get to spend quality time with those who are important to you. I look forward to working with you all in 2016, so please stay safe, especially those who are travelling. If you aren’t going away, enjoy what our region has to offer and look at our area as if you were a visitor as we have so much to enjoy.

Council is continuing to move forward with the development of our new Strategic Management Plan, whilst still working to achieve goals outlined in our current Plan. The new Plan will, along with several recently developed Community Master plans, help guide Council’s direction and spending into the next 1-5 years. Your responses to the community survey, completed late last year, have been instrumental in shaping the direction of the Plan. I take this opportunity to again thank each of you who completed the survey and provided feedback.

Council is pleased with the completed restoration of the Port MacDonnell Jetty, including new decking and handrails, by the Dept of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure. This enhances Council’s vision for a more sustainable and attractive environment for locals and visitors alike and is a great asset for the community. The old timber decking has been retained by Council to be utilised in community projects. The upgrade included a change of use from a commercial wharf to a recreational jetty, supporting Council’s commitment to tourism within the region. Coastal protection continues to be an ongoing issue. Council has held discussions with landowners from Pelican Point in an attempt to identify a way forward. Council has engaged Tonkin Consulting to prepare a design brief and costing for coastal protection methods that would be suitable in protecting landowners’ property at Pelican Point while complying with the Coast Protection Board’s requirements. Council’s role is to act as a facilitator between the parties, and to assist the Pelican Point community in determining a practical and sustainable solution. This is an ongoing matter for resolution which presents some challenges,

however Council is confident that we have made significant progress over the course of 2015.
As the Christmas period approaches I advise that Council’s main office in Mount Gambier will be closed from noon 24 December until 4 January. Port MacDonnell Community Complex will only be closed Christmas Day. Our Airport will operate as normal excluding public holidays, and the Saleyards will be closed from 23 December until 4 January, with its last sale for 2015 being 16 December.
Sale by Council of the Port MacDonnell Old Boatyard Land offers a prime development opportunity. The land will be sold by tender, through Herberts Real Estate, with a Land Management Agreement attached requiring the land be developed with a mixed use of commercial, retail, residential and tourist accommodation in line with the Port MacDonnell Masterplan. Port MacDonnell’s Sutton Court Aged Care Homes have recently been sold by Council to Boandik Lodge. The Catholic Church had donated the land to Council with the intent that it be developed and utilised as a retirement village. Council developed three units but has had increasing difficulty in fulfilling these obligations. The purchase by Boandik Lodge means that the property can now be used for its intended purpose. Boandik have plans to develop two more units and have plans to undertake renovation works to the existing units to improve their suitability for Aged Care. The sale has taken place without affecting the current tenancies, which Council believes is an extremely positive outcome for all parties.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge the support and efforts of our Mayor and Elected Members, communities, volunteers and staff throughout 2015. I also wish each of you a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to working with you to continue moving the District Council of Grant forward next year.
Council offered a number of free or subsidised events for their Senior Residents during Seniors Month in October to celebrate the valuable contribution that they have made, and continue to make, to our local Community. Events including lunches, bus tours and information sessions were hosted for a total of 190 seniors by Carpenter Rocks, Port MacDonnell, Tarpeena and Donovans community groups.
SGIC Driver Awareness Free driver awareness sessions were offered to the district’s senior and migrant communities in October. Council and SAPOL hosted the sessions which were supported by an SGIC Community Road Safety Grant.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Robbie says no... by Robbie Tansel I read with interest premier Jay Weatherill suggesting this week that the South Australian government might consider introducing a scheme where women could get criminal history checks performed on their partners to see if there is any history of domestic violence. I certainly don’t want to condone, encourage or support domestic violence in any way, but this struck me as a pretty stupid idea. For beginners we don’t really need the government to provide this service because it already exists. It’s called the internet. Type your partner or prospective partner’s name into Google and see what comes up. If they’ve got a criminal history it’ll pop up no doubt. If you want to save yourself some time going through a variety of pages on the world wide web, simplify things and Facestalk them. You’ll find out if they’re a criminal as well as what they had for lunch and who cut them off in traffic and spoke rudely to them. How would it work in practice anyway? At what point of the relationship would you be able to access this information? When you’ve been seeing the person for six months? By this stage, the chances are it’s too late. If at the six month point of a relationship you’re wanting this sort of check to be performed on your partner, you’ve probably already got some sort of a problem. It might be worth leaving the relationship regardless of what the results of the check are. So maybe it would be necessary to have this criminal history check performed much
earlier in the relationship; maybe even before you enter the relationship! That’s certainly going to take the spontaneity out of things, isn’t it? For starters a lot of you youngsters are actually going to have to know the name of the person before you go home with them. “Who were you wanting the criminal history check performed on, young lady?” “That hot guy in the corner with the manbun.” Instead of simply staggering out of the nightclub and jumping in a taxi back to their place for Netflix and chill, you’re going to be asking them to fill out the paper work authorising the police to access their police records. “Now if you’ll just sign here, here and here, thank you.” The government will need to set up some sort of desk at pubs and clubs where people can queue up to get the check done before they commit. “I just met Clint and I’m thinking of going home with him but could you just check if he’s ever beaten anyone? I don’t suppose you provide credit history checks while you’re at it? Or career checks? He says he’s a secret agent.” Let me say again, if you feel the need to get a criminal history check on your partner, it’s time to assess whether you should be in that relationship. If they seem untrustable or unstable, that’s all the check you need. I think we all know how long these police checks can take to come through as well. I can just imagine young ladies getting me to fill out the paper work and then saying, “I’ll get back to you in about six weeks and we can tee up a one night stand.” After
going through all the paperwork there’s going to be a bit of pressure for it to be worth your while as well. I can just see this will be another reason women can use to reject me. “Not until we get that criminal history check, mate.” From my point of view some sort of psychiatric history check would be much more useful with the women I’ve experienced. I’ll say it one more time. You don’t need a criminal history check to tell you that you shouldn’t be in a relationship with someone, people. Noone deserves a violent, controlling or aggressive relationship so if you’re in one, seek help and get out. If you think this is one of Mr Weatherill’s better ideas and I’m just not getting it, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

ADVERTORIAL - Gardenarium All your Christmas gift needs Here at Gardenarium and The Pot Shop we are bursting at the seams with Christmas gift ideas and with less than four weeks to go you should be well underway with Christmas shopping. We have the whole family covered, not just for gardeners, but from children’s outdoor table and chair settings, wall plaques for the cubby house and tools, right through to fruit trees, berries and ornamental trees and then on to quality outdoor furniture settings, bar chairs and tables and, as ever, a whole new range of outdoor garden benches, fountains and birdbaths. This season we have also become the stockists for the Limestone Coast region for Kensington high quality teak outdoor furniture, expanding the teak and outdoor wicker along with modular outdoor lounge suites with cell foam, which means it can get wet and not transfer through when you sit on them. They have a warranty second to none. The pre-Christmas sale that ended last Sunday has been continued, so the good news is if you missed out on any of the hundreds of specials throughout the entire Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Group specials then there is still time. Much of our stock are one-offs found on our buying trips and specialist, small amounts of products are only available. To keep our ranges unique, current and exclusive we aim to offer you, exclusive products, many from poor and underdeveloped countries, which we try to support as much as possible. With reclaimed teak birdhouses from India, to wrought iron and cast iron ware from within Australia, statues from Indonesia, the range is overwhelming. Stock is handpicked from small batches and we will never have them again - a great gift idea for that someone special, safe in the knowledge that no one else will have them. The Pot Shop section is still undergoing expansion and as the days roll on more and more Christmas stock is being put out. You can lay by now for Christmas and leave picking up until Christmas Eve if you wish. A new shipment of real wicker furniture has just arrived along with our 2016 range of outdoor tables in travertine and marble,
cast aluminium, PVC German wicker with three year warranty, as well as ranging our new teak furniture. Are you planning to dine outside this Christmas or will be doing a lot of entertaining ? Perhaps now is the time to look at upgrading your old outdoor setting or buy one that will last a lifetime. Some of the newest stock to arrive includes glass terrariums in six sizes and several shapes (see website), new cast iron firepits, ponds or planters, a whole host of new farm yard animals in much bigger sizes than those we have previously stocked, and a new range of gardening gloves, right up to long arm gloves in soft leather to protect from rose thorns. Our second shipment of driftwood Christmas trees, wreaths and stars, reindeers and beautiful angels has also just arrived from the Phillipines, as well as planters and wind chimes. The Pot Shop has also brought in a fantastic new range of wrought iron arbours and tree seats (see advert), garden arches, rose towers, obelisks, cast iron wall art and decorative rose poles and wisteria rings to complement any garden. These structures are heavy duty and designed to last and age gracefully to blend in to most gardens. We also have cast aluminium weathervanes for those in coastal areas. And of course if it all get too hard then we have the good old gift vouchers in any denomination and they are valid for 12 months. So, whatever the gardener or non gardener in your life is hoping for this Christmas be sure to make a trip to Gardenarium and The Pot Shop and Limestone Coast Roses and Advanced Trees and wander through the amazing array of goodies. Open every day except Monday to 5.30pm and 5pm on Sundays. 167, Bay Road, (Riddoch Hwy) Mount Gambier, see the website for details. P.S. Christmas lily orders are being taken at present.

advertising feature • Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce
EVERYTHING YOU NEED RIGHT ON YOUR DOORSTEP We certainly do not want to alarm you but there is less than a month of shopping time left before Christmas 2015. The good news is Mount Gambier’s vibrant retail sector can cater for all your gift giving needs. From Kris Kringle treats to the large scale family presents, from stocking fillers to that meaningful gift for the most important in your life, Mount Gambier’s shopping precincts - the Main CBD, Mount Gambier Central and Mount Gambier Market place - have a variety of shops to suit all tastes and budgets. The best thing about dealing with a local is the personalised service they provide, catering for individual needs, flashing a smile, even when they are run off their feet at this busy time. Shopping locally and dealing with people you know and trust makes economic sense as they are part of the network of over two million small businesses in Australia who make up the largest employer group in our country and this makes it more important than ever to focus on supporting local small business this Christmas. The diversity of local businesses in Mount Gambier and surrounds enables us to find everything we need to spend our Christmas dollars right on our doorstep. The Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce encourages you to shop locally this Christmas. If plenty of people start pounding the pavement in pursuit of that perfect Christmas gift, the city’s cafes, restaurants and take-away outlets should all benefit. Mount Gambier has a wealth of gourmet food outlets and coffee shops and they would also be hoping for a Yuletide spin-off, with shoppers as well as friends and families catching up over this festive season.
Check out pages 30-39 for a range of specials from a diverse group of the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce members.

PET OF THE WEEK
Left - Naracoorte RSL pennant bowler Ryan O’Shaughnessy is only nine years old and played his first division one pennant game on Saturday. Taking up the sport two years ago playing social bowls with his father, Ryan usually plays in the division four pennant team but took to the division one greens at the weekend. Ryan also plays basketball.
Can you give Mia a loving forever home? Meet gorgeous Mia, a black three-year-old Labrador. Like all Labrador’s, Mia is a loving and loyal young girl with endless love to share. This playful and energetic young girl simply adores spending time with her human friends. Mia loves playing in the water and can often be found splashing around in our water troughs and will need an owner to take her for regular exercise. The SEAWL is desperate to find Mia a new home and has reduced her adoption price to $250. If you think you can give Mia a second chance at a safe and loving home, contact the SEAWL on 8723 9133 during opening hours or visit www.seawl.thelimestonecoast. com.au for more information about the adoption process.
Right - Mount Gambier softballer Georgia Hood has just been selected in the Australian Under 17 Schoolgirls team, following in the footsteps of sister Amber, who was selected in the same team last year. lifestyle1.net | 44
