Stawell Gift winner set to tackle SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run It’s that time of the year again when the Mount Gambier community starts to ramp up its training for the SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run. The 2015 event is on November 29 with more than 1000 participants again expected to tackle the three courses on offer - 10.4; 6.8 and 3.2km circuits. All eyes will be on Victorian teenager Thomas Hynes, if he fronts up for his fourth successive tilt at the event, which he has won every time he has competed. He was the youngest winner in the race’s history in 2012, setting the race record, as well, which he then broke again in his 2013 win before again taking out the 2014 fun run despite having an injury interrupted preparation. Hynes certainly indicated he would be looking to return this year after his 2014 victory, with 10km being his pet distance in road and track racing. “I want to keep coming back – I really enjoy the event,” he said. “I would like to go further with my running and try and improve

and get the most out of my ability.” The other defending champions are Belinda Richardson (women’s 10km); Ben Sims and Caitlin Dyer for the 6.8km distance and Dylan Childs and Hannah Elliot in the 3.2km category. The 2015 event does have an added attraction with 2014 Stawell Gift winner and former Mount Gambier local Luke Versace tackling the Blue Lake course. Luke’s claim to fame, prior to his nailbiting Stawell Gift victory, the narrowest in the race’s 134 year history, was being gored at the 2001 running of the bulls in Pamplona. Versace still holds the 100m record at Mount Gambier High School, which he set in 2001, and organisers are hopeful having the former local, who also competed at the inaugural Mount Gambier Gift, involved will attract even more competitors. The number of teams competing in the event has continued to rise every year and organisers are hopeful schools, community and sporting groups,

will again be the case this year, with all participants needing to pick up their race packs on Saturday, November 28, at the Mount Gambier Library verandah, unless alternate arrangements are made prior to the weekend. Nominations are encouraged by November 15 with a late applying thereafter, until final deadline of November 27. Log onto www.bluelakefunrun.com.au for full details and to reserve your place in the popular event.

Last year, all participants received a running singlet as part of their nomination pack and that

AT THE CINEMA MISS YOU ALREADY - OCTOBER 8 The friendship between two life-long girlfriends is put to the test when one starts a family and the other falls ill. Starring Toni Colette & Drew Barrymore.

LOCAL Piece of broadcasting history accidentally discovered Life often comes full circle and 5THE FM experienced this recently. On the hunt for a caravan to convert into an outside broadcast van, station manager Sheryl Lowe contacted Jim Garner from Garners Towing and Garage some weeks ago to see if he could locate one suitable for conversion to a mobile studio. With the Millicent show looming, and the urgency for a van to broadcast from, Jim began searching in earnest and found one he thought might be suitable size and condition and it matched the brief perfectly. Mr Garner kindly donated the caravan to 5THE FM - the price was right so they accepted. An amazing discovery was made later that day. In the process of sanding the outside of the van ready for painting, the old 5THE FM logo was uncovered. Believe it or not, un-beknown to Jim, the van he donated to the station was originally owned by 5THE FM until 12 years ago when prior management sold it to a local businessman and it had spent the last 12 years at the beach. It’s back home at 5THE FM and going through a major

PET OF THE WEEK Is cute little Cleo the one for you? Nine-month-old Cleo is a small cat with a big personality. This adventurous girl is still a kitten at heart and loves exploring the world around her. Cleo can often be found relaxing by the cattery windows and watching the dogs during their morning play session. While Cleo is definitely a playful little girl, she loves nothing more than cuddling with her human friends and will need an owner willing to give her lots of pats and ear scratches! If you think you can give Cleo a second chance at a safe and loving home, please contact the SEAWL on (08)8723 9133 during opening hours or visit www.seawl.thelimestonecoast.com.au for more information about the adoption process.

transformation, The project captured community interest with Brian Foster Owner of Fosters Foodland donating a set of mags, because in his opinion ‘wheels makes the vehicle, Dennis Muhovics owner of Lonergan and Muhovics - electrical including lighting, Millicent Windows and Doors - a studio window, Tel Signs - signage, Millicent Banner Mitre 10 - paint, Millicent Post Forming - materials for the broadcasting desk. The work is being carried by Job Prospects WFD Activity with Superviser Matthew Schultz employed by 5THE FM to oversee the transformation. Ms Lowe said the project took on new meaning to everyone as soon as the vans origins were discovered, becoming a labour of love for all involved and is on track to be in use for the Millicent Show. The van will be used to broadcast sporting and community events in the future. 5THE FM will be at the Millicent Show just inside the gate Friday afternoon and will also be broadcasting Saturday Morning Jukebox live. Come and see the results of this project at the show just inside the gate. By Sheryl Lowe See more details on this year’s Millicent Show on pages 31-33.

TRIATHLON Call for school teams in 2016 Kingston SE Triathlon The Limestone Coast’s most successful student triathletes have issued a call for more schools to take part in the Naracoorte Toyota 2016 Kingston SE Triathlon on February 14, 2016. Bordertown High School has taken home the coveted Schools Shield a staggering 18 times since the student competition began 22 years ago, winning this year’s February event in 55 minutes and 18 seconds. The school has now won seven consecutive titles, with Health and PE co-ordinator, Shane Orrock, crediting the individual athletes involved for Bordertown’s enduring success. “We have a very active sports program at the school, but a lot of the kids who enter the triathlon are already talented swimmers or footballers and netballers who use it as pre-season training for their regular sports rather than specialising in triathlons,” he explains. Mr Orrock says a broad crosssection of Bordertown High students from years 8- 12 enter the event, with some also choosing to tackle the race as individuals. “The students organise their own transport and accommodation, so there is a lot of family involvement, and the kids also get further inspired after seeing the fitness levels of professional triathletes taking part, so it’s a great experience,” he says. Kingston SE Triathlon Club president, Alison Stillwell, says a total of 10 school teams competed in this year’s event, representing Kaniva College, Keith Area School, Kingston Community School, Naracoorte High School and Bordertown High School. Each team of three students entered the Jaffa Limestone Short Course, which features a 500-metre swim, a 13.3-kilometre bike leg and a 3.6-kilometre run. “We would really love to see some Lower South East schools from Mount Gambier and surrounding

districts getting involved, with the winning team receiving the School Shield, individual medals and a cash prize,” she says. Online registrations for the 28th annual event are now open, with the Olympic course also serving as Race 7 in the Triathlon SA State Series. A high-profile list of competitors from Adelaide will be travelling to Kingston to take part, however organisers are also hoping for increased involvement from local athletes following the introduction of the Limestone Coast Triathlon Series. “This region hosts three triathlons over a three-month period at Cape Jaffa (Dec 6th), Kingston (Feb 14) and Beachport (March 6), so we have effectively combined them to create a summer series, which is really exciting,” Ali says. The trophies for the Limestone Coast Triathlon Series will be awarded by Cape Jaffa Anchorage, and go to the male and female winners who compete in all three triathlons in either of the following groupings: Mini (Cape Jaffa) + Short (Kingston) + Short (Beachport) or Short (Cape Jaffa) + Olympic (Kingston) + Challenge (Beachport).

Honouring the best in the business 2015 NAB Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards in focus

HALL OF FAME - Boandik Lodge’s Gillian McGinty (right) with TBW general manager Robin Reid.

The Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards are all about showcasing the best of Mount Gambier’s business community and those who are not just surviving in difficult economic times but thriving. 2015 was no different, starting off with the three inductees into the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame and they were a trio of business success stories that could not have been more divers – an innovative aged care facility; the craftsmen or carpentry and a respected real estate firm. HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE – BOANDIK LODGE The concept for Boandik Lodge began in 1949 when the Old Aged, Invalid, & Widows’ Pension Association made representations to the City Council. By 1952 public meetings and initial funding, sponsored by the late Councillor A.F. (Tony) Sutton, initiated what is now Boandik Lodge. In 1956 the doors of the Mount Gambier Old Folks Home opened with accommodation for six men and six women. In 1959 the Home was re-named Boandik Lodge in honour of the Boandik

people who lived in the district at the time of European settlement. The development of the region’s premier aged care facility since those days is astonishing. It now provides care for 229 people across four facilities in Mount Gambier with a further 45 people live in independent living units and 500 people living at home receiving support throughout the Limestone Coast. Boandik Lodge also employs 390 staff and boasts an annual turnover of $19 million dollars. The expansion would not have been possible without the fantastic support provided by the Mount Gambier community. This support has ranged from individual donations, financial and in-kind support from service clubs and community organizations and the significant financial support provided by the Kessal Bequest, City of Mount Gambier and District Council of Grant. HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE – M S HEIN & SONS This well known joinery business was started in 1946 at 46 Wehl Street North by Merlyn Hein. His son Bob joined him a year later and sons Allen and Kevin a decade on, to form M S Hein & Sons. In 1982, Kevin

sold his share to Laurie Judd and Robert Knightly and they traded with Bob until his retirement in 1992. From Bob’s retirement until now, the duo has continued to operate the company. In 2005, they purchasedf a property at 7 Ramsay Avenue and during their Christmas break moved all the machinery and stock to the new premises, opening for work at the new site from midJanuary 2006. The products crafted by M S Hein & Sons today are similar to what Merlyn Hein was producing in 1946. M S Hein & Sons manufactures timber window frames, door frames and doors to order from a range of timbers, specialising in heritage replacement frames and mouldings. The window, door and cupboard products are supplied to either builders or clients direct. The cabinetry section of the business has seen the biggest change with the emergance of new products and finishes. M S Hein & Sons employs six tradesmen; two apprentices and two part time office administrators with a total of 28 apprentices having been trained by the business in its almost seven decade history. cont. page 26

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR - Greg Povey (centre) with Job Prospects representatives Karen Olive (left) & Kim Cawthorne (right).

From page 24 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE – GEBHARDTS REAL ESTATE Helen Gebhardt was a woman ahead of her time - she was defiant and stubborn, extremely independent and intelligent, renowned for her honesty and a true character. She was even the first woman to drive a car by herself from Adelaide to Sydney. When she set her mind to something, she did it. So in 1955, when, at the age of 50, she launched her real estate business in Mount Gambier, people knew she meant business. However, as the lone female in the industry, she also had her fair share of knockers - “Miss Gebhardt you won’t last six months” was a common adage. She started business in a tiny room at the foot of the stairs of the Jens annexe with a second hand typewriter and a desk purchased in Adelaide and she did last, working up until she was 85. One year later as the business grew she moved to 18 Watson Terrace. Ron Chuck, the man synonymous in recent times with Gebhardts, commenced in 1969 and has grown the firm into what it is today. Ron’ son, Paul, commenced as a salesperson

The agency is one of the largest, independent real estate firms in the South East and prides itself on its professional and friendly service, leading the way in sales, property mangement and the commercial and residential needs of its clients. EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR – GREG POVEY And speaking of longevity of service and sustained excellence – that description perfectly fits 2015 Employee of the Year Greg Povey. Greg Povey is now in his 40th year at the Barry Maney Group where he holds the position of car service manager. Over the years Greg has continued to provide customers with a level of service which they would find very difficult to find elsewhere. Greg’s underlying strength is his “whatever it takes” attitude to solving a customer’s problem. On many occasions when a customer has been stranded with a broken down vehicle and the company had run out of loan cars, Greg would lend them his own car. He has even taken stranded travellers to his home for a meal. Greg is predominantly always the first at the dealership in the morning and quite often the last to

This is evidenced in the service he provides to customers and is one of the reasons for the long term success of the dealership. OUTSTANDING MANUFACTURING/BUILDING INDUSTRY – WHITTY ENGINEERING - Sponsored by Regional Development Austalia Limestone Coast When Melanie and Will Whitty started their business in 2008, with 2 staff and a small selection of machinery, taking on small jobs, they had no idea how quickly their business would grow and develop into the multi million dollar thriving business that it has become today. Seven years later, Whitty Engineering Pty Ltd provides employment to a full time staff of 25, consisting of apprentices as young as 17 through to experienced tradesmen over 60yrs of age, and a casual staff of 15 as well as a pool of on call casuals, with more than 70 group certificates handed out last year alone. Staff are employed from across the Limestone Coast region and the average wage of staff is higher than the general workforce of the region. With in-house engineers and draftsmen, the company provides a wide range of

solutions for agricultural, manufacturing based operators in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD – FUSS WELLNESS SPA – Sponsored by WIN TV Fuss Wellness began in 2005 with the primary objective of performing beauty services, advanced skin treatments, light based therapy treatments and to educate clients on the importance of skin health and wellbeing. The business has evolved since then through research and customer requirements, with Mardi Goodes taking the decision to change the cosmetic brand that she has used since inception so that the Wellness Spa will now be exclusively a Skin Juice Spa. Through her research Mardi has identified her clients desire for an active organic range and this has been achieved. Mardi began an advanced skin clinic in July 2014 and is now stocking 5 medical grade corrective ranges as she identified a gap in the market in Mount Gambier with people travelling to Adelaide and Melbourne to avail themselves of such services. Mardi invests back into her business so that her clients are assured of receiving the latest treatments. This investment has paid good dividends, as in the past twelve months her business has grown enormously and product sales have increased by well over 100%. Product knowledge is crucial for this business, as is training undertaken by Mardi and her product suppliers to ensure constant staff development. opened in November 2012, after the closure of several similar long-standing local businesses, as Sharon saw there was an opening in the market for a retail lingerie business catering for ladies of all ages. Bare Necessities’ primary role is the provision of high-quality, specialised products, services and fittings to local and surrounding districts clients. Product offering includes lingerie, sleepwear, hosiery, shape wear, swimwear and post-surgery/mastectomy products from a range of trusted quality brands, many of which are not available elsewhere in the region. Sharon supplies post-surgery and mastectomy products and fittings and works directly with the regional health services to support women post-surgery. For the first 13 months of the business, Sharon operated the store on her own and now employs two sales assistants on a flexible basis and will be adding another over the busy Christmas period. Customer service is the main market differentiator of Bare Necessities as Sharon offers personalised, customised service, which she believes is the key to a successful business. In fact Sharon offers a service to elderly or clients unable to leave their homes. Having lived and worked in the local community all her life, Sharon knows the value to the community and local business of being community minded in all aspects of business. Bare Necessities Lingerie supports many different charities and sporting groups but the Breast Cancer network is the one closest to her heart and sees her providing sponsorship across a range of events. OUTSTANDING RETAIL BUSINESS – SHE’S APPLES – Sponsored by National Australia Bank She’s Apples has been in business in Mount Gambier for 26 years and currently employs 30 local staff from school students to long serving experienced employees. Maintaining and growing the business therefore assists to ensure a continued source of employment for staff, supporting local families. Last year they completed a refurbishment of their store and continue their

commitment to retail only Australian grown fruit and vegetables cementing their whole-hearted support for the Australian agricultural and horticultural industries. Wherever possible they purchase from and promote local, regional and South Australian grocery and gourmet products and are committed to supporting local growers, as well as stocking a variety of products prepared by local restaurateurs. They pride themselves on supporting local growers and other food producers and in fact have 21 local producers represented in their store today. They have introduced a customer loyalty card program which numbers in excess of 5,000 members. Recognising that there is a significant group of local people with food intolerances they are always researching and purchasing to provide a substantial range of food products for these customers. The Portland foreshore area is set to receive a botanic transformation with the removal of large trees due to safety concerns. Glenelg Shire Mayor Robert Halliday (pictured) said crews would be arriving on-site over the coming weeks to remove the diseased and overgrown trees, many which drop messy debris, to improve the aesthetic of the area and reduce safety risk. Under the works, six Cyprus trees are due to be removed from the Ploughfield site, opposite the hospital. In addition four Lagunaria Norfolk Island Hibiscus (also known as Itchy Bomb) and two metrosideros New Zealand Christmas tree will be cut down in the foreshore precinct. Cr Halliday said many of the trees would be replaced with native species. “Council is investing in a major transformation of our picturesque foreshore area to improve the useability and aesthetic of this great meeting place,” Cr Halliday said. “Many of the trees to be removed have been identified by council staff as being in poor health, posing a potential safety risk, or are simply overgrown and do not fit with the improvements planned for the space. The works will restrict access to some parts of the foreshore for a short period as arborists complete the work, however this impact will be minimal and will be publicised.” Cr Halliday said the removal of the trees would improve views of the bay from both Cliff and Bentinck Streets. “We have one of the most beautiful bays in Australia and I think many residents, and tourists, will enjoy the improved visibility across the foreshore as a result of the tree removal,” Cr Halliday said. “Many will also notice that works are progressing on the Skate Park and Community Space area which is on track to be completed in the early new year. Council will revegetate this youth precinct, and will also be replacing many of the trees removed under these current works, with native species which will ensure this is an attractive and useable space for all.”

I’ve been working on a book for the last year or so. I’ve hit a bit of a roadblock over the last few weeks and it’s all because of the common question mark. I had carefully checked through the book, sorting out any issues with spelling and punctuation throughout. I consider myself pretty strong when it comes to my ability to edit my work in this way. On the other hand I think it’s always a good idea to get others to give things a read too so I put it in the hands of my partner Donna. This is where the problems started. Donna has found bucketloads of issues that I had missed and one of the things she has particularly noticed is my use of question marks. More correctly, she has noticed my lack of use of question marks. Technically her issues with my use of question mark are correct. There are plenty of occasions when I should use a question mark that I don’t. I know this, but I still don’t want to put a question mark, and I’ve

decided that this is because I think the question mark is an obsolete form of punctuation. Let me explain. It’s not like if you read a question written without a question mark, you won’t realise that it’s a question. Am I right. See that was a question just then. My computer has underlined “right” with green to let me know that it’s angry at me for not using a question mark. But we all know it’s a question, don’t we. That was another one. Do you see what I mean. It’s different to an exclamation mark. When you use an exclamation mark, you’re letting someone know how to read something. Read it loudly! An exclamation mark does something that is still quite necessary. Mind you, plenty of people get the same effect by WRITING IN CAPITALS. IDIOTS. So I’d like to propose we get rid of the question mark. What do you think. Does it confuse you when I don’t put a question mark. Do you think I’m just making a statement. I’m sure it’s feeling a little

unusual at the moment but give it some time to get used to. Apart from the fact that it’s not necessary, I think there are plenty of times when something is technically a question but it’s actually not a question. This is particularly the case when talking to a woman. Consider these examples. Sometimes Donna will say to me, “You’re not going out wearing that, are you.” Technically, that’s a question and requires a question mark. In reality that’s not a question. That is a clear comment on the unsuitability of the outfit and an implied expectation that the choice of clothes will be modified. How about this one. “Who was that girl you were talking to.” That looks like a question. You might think that since it’s a question, you need to answer the question. This is actually an accusation. Your partner is saying she is feeling threatened and would prefer that you paid her more attention and the attractive young lady you were talking to less. “Cheryl from the front office,” might appear to be the correct answer but it was not actually a question. If anything a question mark adds confusion in these situations and clouds the communication. It makes the person on the receiving end think they can provide an answer but an answer is just not wanted or needed. Having read my whole sermon for this week, are you feeling letdown that I didn’t give you a question mark. Did you find it hard to know when I was asking a question. Exactly. If you’d like to join me in banning the question mark, I can be emailed at robbietansel@ gmail.com

COME ‘N’ TRY ALLABOUT SQUARES DANCE CLUB - Glenburnie Hall, Casterton Road New members, families, couples and singles are welcome. No previous experience necessary. New Thursday night classes starting this week. 7.30pm start. For more details please call Andrea on: 0417 509 144.

LOCAL Record exhibitors for next week’s Limestone Coast Wine Show A record number of wine producers have entered next week’s 15th annual Limestone Coast Wine Show, with 87 different exhibitors nominating 443 of their top drops for close scrutiny. The show committee’s Sarah Pidgeon says the figure is 10 per cent higher than last year. “This is the most exhibitors the wine show has had and reflects some pleasing interest in the event from newer winemakers around the regions, as well as strong entries from long-time supporters of the show,” she says. All wines entered have been crafted with grapes grown in the Limestone Coast, which boasts a prestigious international reputation for Cabernet in particular. “Around three quarters of the entries are for red wine classes, with the two-year-old reds once again attracting the most confidence,” Sarah says. “The 2013 vintage was a strong one, and the judges should look forward to some terrific wines in those classes, while the Museum Red Class (showcasing wines that are seven-years-old or older) has also attracted a lot of interest - many local wineries take pride in showcasing these precious older wines within this class and recognise that this is a highlight for the visiting judges.” One of Australia’s most respected wine journalists, Jane Faulkner, is the new Chief of Judges. She will be joined on the panel by winemakers Steph Dutton (Penfolds), David Morris (Morris Wines, Rutherglen) and Stuart Watson (Woodlands, Margaret River), and sommelier Patrick White. Leading Singapore consultant Lim Hwee Peng, CSW, FWS, will bring a global perspective to the event as this year’s guest International Judge. Hwee Peng is scheduled to fly to Mount Gambier this Friday (October 23) and will spend three days touring Coonawarra, Robe and Mount Benson before judging begins at the Coonawarra Hall on Monday October 26. The trophy winners will be determined on Thursday October 29 ahead of that evening’s Trophy

The dinner will also feature a special presentation from the backto-back winner of the Arthur Hoffman Trophy for ‘Viticulturist of Best Wine of Show’, Trent Brand. “I was fortunate to tour New Zealand in July as part of my prize, visiting Hawkes Bay on the North Island and then the Marlborough region and Central Otago on the South Island to look at their grape production methods and different use of machinery, to see what may be useful for us here,” Trent explains. “Some of their sustainability efforts are really fascinating, including one winery which is baling up canes from their vines to fuel a boiler to help heat their premises.” Trent Brand won the top award on the back of the stunning success of Brand’s Laira’s Coonawarra One Seven One Cabernet Sauvignon, which has dominated the Limestone Coast Wine Show for the past two years. Last year’s Chairman of judges, Andrew Wigan, said the 2012 vintage “did a demolition job on every other wine in the show” when it collected four trophies, with the winery hinging its hopes on the 2013 vintage for next week’s event. “It’s still a very good wine, but it depends on what the competition is like,” IMPORTANT DATES: Judging October 26-29 at the Coonawarra Hall Trophy Dinner October 29 at The Barn. Exhibitors Tasting October 30 at Coonawarra Hall 9:30am (Public tasting is from 11.30am – 1.30pm - $15 admission including results book)

ROLL UP...ROLL UP...It’s Millicent Show time - Nov 6-8 Tradition and high octane energy

In its 139th year, the Millicent Show, as always, promises high octane entertainment, as well as traditional country show fare. From Friday night’s motocross to the Horses In Action program; from the demolition derby to the speed shearing and grand parade, from the fun and frivolity of sideshow alley to the time honoured arts and crafts in the indoor hall displays, the Millicent Show combines family fun and new headline acts, with all the favourites that have featured in the past 100 plus years. Starting with the indoor judging at 9am Friday, the program is then filled with Horses in Action and Motocross right through the night with Sweet September providing the Friday night entertainment in the shearing pavilion. Friday is also fireworks night with the display set to fire off at 9pm. Saturday has an early start – 7.30am – with the yard dog championships, closely followed by the 8am start of the shearing and wool handling

competitions. Horses in Action continue Saturday along with the livestock judging and a swag of entertainment options from Circus Elements to popular snake handler David Miles. Saturday will also see the appearance of Josh Burdon (pictured in action at the 2014 SE Field Days) and his freestyle motocross stunts, as well as a demolition derby and radio controlled cars. Sunday is all about the horses again and also includes the Stockman’s Challenge. With the usual sideshow alley attractions and plenty of food on offer, the 139th annual Millicent Show really does have something for everyone. If you are entering the indoor competition, nominations close on November 3 and entries need to be delivered on November 5. Organisers are also calling for nominations for the Young & Youth Rural Ambassador and you can contact the show secretary for more details. PHOTO COURTESY OF IAN TURNER

AT THE GALLERY

SIDNEY KIDMAN - The Extraordinary Life of Sir Sidney Kidman• RIDDOCH ART GALLERY, MOUNT GAMBIER October 31 – December 13 This exhibition documents the life and times of Sir Sidney Kidman. As a barely literate youth of thirteen, Sidney Kidman ran away from home and worked as an odd-job boy in a grog shanty in outback Australia. He went on to become the greatest pastoral landholders in modern history, acquiring a legendary reputation both home and abroad as the Cattle King. Kidman was much more than a grazier. In addition to his many successful business ventures and his contribution to the war effort, he was driven by a grand plan for the remote arid areas of Australia. This kept him locked in a battle with the land – and against drought. Wealth, power, fame and honours did not change Sidney Kidman. He remained the homespun, gregarious bushman for whom men worked with an almost savage loyalty. With a collection of rare photographs, newspaper cuttings and 16mm films, this exhibition explores the extraordinary life of one of Australia’s outback legends..

CrossFit is for everyone and no one is better proof of that then Blue Lake CrossFit founders Adam and Eve Maywald (pictured right) – Adam is a civil engineer and Eve is a registered nurse, but when it comes to fitness and conditioning they are on the same page. The duo took up CrossFit when living in Tasmania and loved it so much that when they returned to Mount Gambier to be closer to family they decided to bring the CrossFit revolution to the Blue Lake City. That was three and a half years ago, and CrossFit has become one of the most popular exercise choices in Mount Gambier. CrossFit, itself, is a competitive sport for some people but for the general population it is an amazing and adaptable approach to strength and conditioning training for all fitness levels. A mix of bodyweight exercises, weights and cardio respiratory training in a high intensity format, coaches take every class like it is a group PT session. So if you are looking to get fitter and stronger, lose weight and gain muscle as well as join an awesome community of people then come and see what Blue Lake CrossFit has to offer. CrossFit’s aim is to improve a broad range of physical skills including cardio-respiratory endurance, strength, speed, power, balance, accuracy, stamina, flexibility, coordination and agility. Eve and Adam are also specialists in Olympic

Local Sport MOTOR Motor racing icon to officiate hill climb Australia’s most celebrated flag waver, Glen Dix, has accepted an invitation to bring his chequered flag to Mount Gambier for next month’s Trident Tyre Centre Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb. Globally famous for his flamboyant trackside technique at the Australian Grand Prix for more than a decade, Mr Dix will bring his distinctive style to the Valley Lakes finish line for the 10th Anniversary Hillclimb being held on November 6-8. South East Automobile Club president, Paul Heenan, says event officials are looking forward to hosting South Australian racing ‘royalty’. “Glen Dix (pictured below) is such a big name in South Australian motorsport, but he’s also one of the nation’s most well known racing identities,” he says. “While he is most famous for the Grand Prix, Glen and his flags were a prominent fixture at many other major events including several Australian 500cc

ACCOMMODATION

Motorcycle Grands Prix. To have someone of his calibre attend the Trident Tyre Centre Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb is simply terrific.” In 2009, Mr Dix was recognised in the Australia Day awards with an Order of Australia medal for services to motorsport and the community. Now in his early eighties, he has long retired from the Grand Prix scene but maintains a strong involvement in motorsport and charity work. “We feel extremely privileged that he has agreed to come down to the Limestone Coast to be a part of our event, and we’re sure he will be impressed – and of course the competitors and the spectators are going to love seeing him in action,” Mr Heenan says. The Trident Tyre Centre Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb is open to more than 30 different vehicle classes ranging from historic through to improved production, sports cars and four-wheel drive saloons. A total of 135 drivers have nominated for this year’s event, with reigning ‘Lakes Legend’ Peter Gazzard and his closest rival Kevin Mackrell among the confirmed starters. Mr Dix is planning to be at the race track all day Saturday and on Sunday up until lunchtime. Weekend racing begins at 8:30am each morning, and shuttle buses will be available to take spectators to the best vantage points in the volcano precinct. Scrutineering for the weekend entrants will also take place on the Friday afternoon at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds from 5 o’clock, with members of the public welcome. In a break from tradition, there will be no formal presentation dinner to wind up this year’s event, with the official presentation set to take place within the Valley Lakes precinct straight after the final race for the event.

TENNIS South East Seniors An enjoyable day of senior tennis was had by 23 players in glorious sunshine at Penola on Sunday. Allan Rex won the men’s side of the draw from runner up Bill Chapman, with Trish Douglas taking out the women’s event from Helen Rathjen. The next event will be held at Murray Bridge, on November 8, at 10am, and the local event will be at Glencoe, on November 15, at 11am.
