Customers the number one priority at Spiderman SE Roger Hassett has a lifetime of experience working in customer service and that is the foundation of his latest venture – pest control management business Spiderman SE. With more than three decades working for iconic Aussie airline Ansett, the company’s demise saw Roger retire – not for very long, though. “I had always had businesses on the side,” Roger said.

Pest management was one of those. “I was helping my brothers initially around 40 years ago,” Roger said. And Roger returned to the pest management game

as a contractor, starting in the Upper North of South Australia, before being seconded to Bordertown in November 2010. “And I never left,” he said. His love for the South East and the desire to run his own business then saw Roger start up his own pest management operation – Spiderman SE in October last year.”I had built up a significant customer base and people were very happy with my work,” Roger said. Punctuality and customer follow up have been critical to Roger’s success and he sees both as nonnegotiable in his dealings with customers.

“You have to be somewhere when you say you are going to be there,” he said. “And you have to follow up with people – check that the service has achieved what they wanted.”

Roger also likes to ensure he engages with each and every customer. “You try and deal with them on a personal basis and it builds much better relationships,” he said.

“People become like family and that’s quite humbling.” Spiderman SE covers the entire Upper and Lower South East with Roger guaranteeing that no customer will wait longer than two weeks for the Spiderman SE treatment. The success of the business has seen Roger put on local couple Michael and Sarah Cutting.

“They were customers of mine and I saw them as a couple who were prepared to put in a lot of hard work,” Roger said. “They were very, very keen and had similar values to mine.” Sarah runs the office like clockwork, while Michael is out on jobs. “Sarah has built our website and set up our facebook page as well,” Roger said. Using top quality products is the other cornerstone on which the business has been built. “They are not only effective but also safe,”

Roger said. He has based his operation in Naracoorte because it is central to the region he serves. “It’s so accessible to the area that we cover,” Roger said. “I think it’s a wonderful place to live.” And this is coming from a man who has lived in Western Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory. Roger has seen his client base grow from 300 active customers to now topping the 1500 mark. “Word of mouth has certainly worked well for us,” he said.

Ten myths about contact lenses 1. I can’t wear contact lenses. Yes, you can! Thanks to advances in contact lens technology in recent years, just about everyone can wear contacts. For example, there are now multifocal for people with presbyopia, and toric soft lenses that correct astigmatism. You may be a better candidate for contact lens wear than you think!

2. A contact lens will get lost behind my eye. Nope! A thin membrane called the conjunctiva covers the white of your eye and connects to the inside of your eyelids, making it impossible for a contact lens to get lost behind your eye.

3. Contact lenses are uncomfortable.

Not true. After a brief adaptation period, most people don’t even notice they’re wearing contact lenses. For those who do experience contact lens discomfort, the use of artificial tear supplements is often enough to remedy the problem.

4. Contact lenses can get permanently stuck to my eye. While it’s true that a soft contact lens can stick to the surface of your eye if it dries out, remoistening the lens by applying sterile saline or a multipurpose contact lens solution will get it moving again.

5. Contact lenses are too much trouble to take care of. Wrong!

Multipurpose cleaning solutions make cleaning and disinfecting your lenses easy. Or you can choose to eliminate contact lens care altogether by wearing daily disposable lenses.

6. Wearing contact lenses causes eye problems. It’s true that contact lens wear can increase your risk of certain

eye problems. But if you follow your optometrists instructions regarding how to care for your lenses, how long to wear them and how frequently you should replace them, wearing contact lenses is very safe.

7. I’ll never be able to get them in my eyes. Sure you will. It might seem difficult at first, but your eye care professional will make sure you learn how to apply and remove your contacts before you leave their office. Most people become adept at handling contact lenses much faster than they expect to!

8. Contacts can pop out of my eye.

Years ago, old-fashioned hard contact lenses could sometimes pop out of a wearer’s eyes during sports or other activities. But today’s contacts — including rigid gas permeable contacts — fit closer to the eye so it’s very rare for a contact lens to dislodge from a wearer’s eye unexpectedly.

9. Contact lenses are too expensive.

Not true. Contact lenses can sometimes be less expensive than a good pair of glasses. Even daily disposable contact lenses, once considered a luxury, can cost only about a dollar a day.

10. I’m too old to wear contact lenses.

Who says? With the advent of bifocal contact lenses, and contacts that are specially designed for dry eyes, advancing age is no longer the barrier to successful contact lens wear it once was. Ask your optometrist if you’re a good candidate for contacts — the answer might surprise you.

Screen ED 2015 SIR ROBERT HELPMANN THEATRE, MOUNT GAMBIER October 27 Chicken Cacciatore 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 8 (about 1.4kg) chicken thigh cutlets 200g button mushrooms, trimmed 1 brown onion, finely chopped 4 pancetta slices, coarsely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 3 anchovy fillets, drained, finely chopped 1/2 cup (125ml) white wine 2 cups (500ml) tomato sugo (tomato sauce) 1 cup (175g) kalamata olives 2 tablespoons salted baby capers, rinsed, drained 1/4 cup oregano leaves Method Heat 1 teaspoon of the oil in a large deep frying pan over high heat. Add half the chicken and cook, turning occasionally, for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to a plate.

Repeat with the remaining chicken.

Add half the remaining oil to the pan over high heat. Add mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2-3 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a plate. Heat remaining oil over medium heat. Add onion and pancetta; cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until onion softens. Add garlic and anchovy and cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes or until anchovy dissolves.

Add the chicken and mushrooms to the pan. Pour over the wine and bring to the boil. Add the sugo and stir to combine. Reduce heat to medium-low.

Cook, covered, turning occasionally, for 20 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and sauce thickens slightly. Add the olives, capers and half the oregano; stir to combine.

Remove from heat. Spoon among serving plates. Sprinkle with remaining oregano and serve.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY If I can do it - anyone can... by Robbie Tansel Twelve months ago I decided that I would start regularly running as a form of exercise. At this point in time the only regular exercising I did was a weekly game of social mixed netball. It’s fair to say I had very limited fitness.

The original decision was designed to ensure I had at least a little bit of fitness for the Blue Lake Fun not that Fun Run. I settled on three runs a week as something I could achieve and decided the only time I could commit was giving up half an hour of sleep in the morning and heading

out at 6am. It was not sleep I wanted to sacrifice but I really couldn’t see another way of doing it. My first run was 2.6 kilometres and it took me just over sixteen minutes. I think I ran about half of it and walked the other half trying to gather my breath.

Not particularly impressive. Ten days later I managed my first run with no walking, over the distance of 3.3 kilometres.

I built myself up gradually from there to the point where I completed the 6.8 kilometre not very fun run without walking at all which I saw as quite an achievement. Having completed the run and improved my fitness I decided that I would try and continue my running regime. It had been incredibly difficult to build a

little bit of fitness and I didn’t want to go back to the starting point and try to do it all again.

As I’ve suggested previously, it is a battle every single morning to get out of bed and especially to go out the door. I get some satisfaction from doing it and know that it is good for me, but enjoyment would definitely be too strong a word. I would definitely prefer to stay in bed. Over the last twelve months I’ve travelled 604.5 kilometres after having walked out my front door one hundred and thirty five times. I know that because I’ve kept a spreadsheet of my distances and times since I started. Trying to improve my time has been one of the main ways of keeping myself motivated. I can say that almost without fail I have made myself leave the house on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

On a couple of occasions where I have been unwell or particularly sore, I have still made myself go but walked instead. I think I’d only have to let myself wuss out a few times and it would become an acceptable habit in my mind. I really quite enjoy walking but I know that pushing myself and making myself really quite uncomfortable by running gets much better results. Nearly every morning my self talk will come up with a variety of compelling reasons why I should not run and simply allow myself to walk. Thankfully most of the time I’ve been able to overcome

the voice and make the run. The mental discipline has probably made me prouder most of the time than the physical and fitness improvements. Even through Winter I was still able to make myself run three times a week most of the time.

The running was never really about losing weight or reaching a target weight. I was definitely carrying too much weight. I’m not Biggest Loser overweight but in all honesty losing about fifteen to twenty kilograms would get me to a healthy weight.

But like I said hitting a certain weight was never my motivation. Having said that the fact that I did see kgs gradually dropping off didn’t hurt at all. After 12 months I have lost nine kilograms. In actual fact, I’ve probably lost about about 15 kilos of fat and put on five or six of muscle. Losing weight has been a

happy byproduct of improving my health and fitness. I haven’t changed my diet particularly. Dieticians would say my diet is quite atrocious. What I have done is cut back portion size a little and try to avoid having seconds and thirds so regularly. I’m not telling you all of this to impress you or to brag. I just wanted to say that it is possible to improve your fitness and find the time for exercise. Many of you already know that but there are lots of people just like me who have spent years coming up with reasons why it’s too hard to exercise and that there is no time. I am just a pretty average guy, certainly no athlete and have managed to achieve a significant improvement to my health and fitness in twelve months. It certainly hasn’t been easy. It has taken a large dose of self discipline but it is doable for anyone. My advice would be, find a time, find an activity that makes you sweaty, uncomfortable and short of breath, and find a way of keeping yourself motivated and then make yourself do it no matter what. Find some way of measuring your progress to ensure you’re getting something out of it.

You can do it. Maybe you even want to join me in the No Bloody Fun Run. Apologies for not being at all funny or entertaining this week (probably not that different to normal I guess). TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Finger Buns 7g sachet dry yeast 1/3 cup caster sugar 1/2 cup milk, warmed 2 1/2 cups plain flour 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 50g butter, chilled, chopped 1 egg, lightly beaten 3/4 cup sultanas 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Milk, for brushing Hundreds and thousands and desiccated coconut, to decorate Icing 1 1/2 cups icing sugar mixture 10g butter, softened 2 drops rose pink food colouring Method Grease 2 large baking trays. Place yeast, sugar and milk in a bowl. Stir until yeast is dissolved. Cover. Set aside in a warm place for 10 minutes or until foamy. Sift flour, mixed spice and cinnamon in a bowl. Rub in butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in centre.

Add yeast mixture, 1/4 cup warm water, egg, sultanas and vanilla. Mix well to combine. Cover with lightly greased plastic wrap. Set aside in

a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.3 Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Turn dough onto a floured surface. Knead for 8 minutes or until smooth. Divide dough into 12 portions. Shape each portion into a 13cm long log. Place logs on prepared trays, 5cm apart. Cover with a tea towel and set aside in a warm place for 15 minutes. Brush buns with a little milk. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden and cooked through (buns will sound hollow when tapped). Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Make icing: Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Add butter, 2 teaspoons hot water and pink food colouring. Stir until smooth and combined, adding extra water if necessary. Spread icing over tops of buns. Sprinkle half the buns with hundreds and thousands and remaining buns with coconut. Set aside until icing sets. Serve

Healthy free range eggs right on our doorstep Sustainable farming has long been a focus of Paul and Kylie Serle and while their Tantanoola property is known as a prime lamb operation, it is fast establishing a reputation as free range egg producers. The couple purchased its first Chicken Caravan and 450 chickens in March this year and have just started running a second caravan.

The Chicken Caravan won Farm Invention of the Year in 2012 and givens chickens 24 hour access to pasture allowing them to consume a range of seeds, insects and plants resulting in beautiful fresh eggs with the highest nutrition and taste possible. The new project has not just been important for improved soil condition but also adds diversity to the 2000 acre farm, which is key to the ongoing sustainability of any primary production operation. “It does give us business diversity with another enterprise,” Paul said. It was in 2013 that Paul was a Nuffield scholar, affording him the opportunity to travel extensively overseas

as he focussed on sustainable, biological and regenerative farming. “Paul has always been into biological type soil products and not using chemicals if we can get away with it,” Kylie said. “A lot of the biological regenerative farmers we visited overseas were utilising chickens to influence soil health.” The concept is relatively simple - the chickens scratch around looking for insects and weed seeds and, of course, input into soil is important. It has been a steep learning curve for the couple though. “With our lamb we market through stock agents or direct through saleyards and abattoirs,” Paul said. “But all of a sudden we were dealing with cafe owners and shopkeepers.” The Serles are dealing with more than 200 dozen eggs a week and that is only set to increase with the addition of the second caravan. Kylie has taken on the bulk of the Eco Pasture Eggs operation to allow Paul to concentrate on the prime lamb business and she is determined to showcase the benefits of their newest product. Research into the health benefits of the eggs alone are astonishing, including a third less cholesterol; 25 percent less saturated fat;

two thirds more vitamins; double the omega 3 fatty acids and triple the vitamin E. Kylie realises it sounds a little over the top but the chickens are happy. “They are happy out there grazing and they are very, very quiet,” she said. Having locally produced free range eggs also taps into the growing paddock to plate movement. “Again when we were overseas it is becoming more and more popular to actually know your farmer, where your food is coming from,” Paul said. The couple is promoting their eggs, in conjunction with Goode Paddock Eggs, at the Mount Gambier Farmer’s Market and has also received good support from She’s Apples; Lennons on Lake Terrace and Rosaville Deli in Mount Gambier and Fosters Foodland, in Millicent. Cafe Melzar, which has a strong focus on locally produced organic and sustainable produce, Tiger Hotel, in Tantanoola, Mac’s Hotel, Rosaville and Gambier West Delis are already customers, using the Eco Pasture Eggs in their lunch and dinner menus.

THE CHICKEN CARAVAN STORY Chicken Caravans is actually an Australian invention success story. Chicken Caravan was founded by Daniel O’Brien. Daniel wanted to create sustainable farming systems to produce nutritious and sustainable organic produce. In August 2010, Daniel bought 2000 day old chicks to start a dream of having a free range egg farm. At the time he didn’t have any of his own moveable sheds, so Daniel with the help of a friend worked out a design criteria, and went to the drawing board.

During this time he began looking for a partner with adequate organic pastures for a larger operation for their new business ‘Oxhill Organics’. They soon contacted Chris Eggert from Wauchope NSW, and after talking over the possibility to set up a certified organic free range egg farm, a partnership was formed. Since then it has been a journey of innovation and learning as they develop new ways of sustainable farming with a goal of producing a more nutritious and flavoursome organic egg.

Daniel went on to build the first Chicken Caravan in December 2010. After building 6 Chicken Caravans for his own farming operation, other farmers began asking if he was going to start selling these ‘Chicken Caravans’. So in November 2011 Daniel, his dad Robert and Ash debuted the Chicken Caravan at a farming expo.

2014 saw the development of the flat packed Chicken Caravans and these were field tested in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria. In December of 2014 the first Chicken Caravan was exported from Australia to New Zealand and the first USA sales were made.

LOCAL Early accommodation call for Generations in Jazz festival Predictions of record-breaking school entry numbers have prompted early calls for accommodation for next year’s Generations in Jazz (GIJ) festival in Mount Gambier. Schools, sporting clubs, community groups and home owners are being asked to join the region’s motels, caravan parks and bed and breakfast operators in playing host to thousands of young musicians during the May 6-8 event. Accommodation coordinator, Tanya Coxon, says more than 100 secondary schools are expected to take part in the world-class festival.

“This year, we were able to accommodate a record 3700 participants from 208 stage bands who travelled from as far away as Hobart, Geraldton and Bundaberg but it looks like 2016 will be even bigger, so we need to get in early in order to guarantee that all guests will have somewhere to stay,” she explains. “Mount Gambier itself has about 850 traditional accommodation beds, but we need at least 5000 taking into account concert audiences as well as participants.” The increased interest has been partly attributed to the strong response from the GIJ trade booth at this year’s Maryborough Music Conference. The event is Australia’s premier music educator’s conference, and GIJ board members Jim Kirkup and Christine Comley travelled to Queensland in July with GIJ chairman, James Morrison, and Marryatville High music director, Rob Chenoweth, whose students took out both Division 1 and 2 at this year’s event. “The conference attracted up to 1000 music teachers from around the nation, so it was a really fantastic opportunity to be able to spread the word about the opportunities at GIJ for those schools who aren’t already involved,” says Mr Kirkup. The phenomenal success of the James Morrison Academy of Music @ UniSA, which opened in Mount Gambier in March, has further increased interest in GIJ, while the all-important word-of-mouth has been another key factor in the festival’s growth.

“It’s a superbly managed operation from start to finish, with volunteers working tirelessly to ensure that all participants walk away with a favourable experience, and our efforts are clearly paying off as so many students want to be involved,” Mr Kirkup says. Ideally, local motels will be reserved for parents and friends, leading organisers to rely on the region’s famous country hospitality to accommodate most of the musicians. “Sporting clubs with shower and kitchen facilities are ideal to convert into makeshift dormitories and it can turn out to be a really worthwhile fundraiser, with club hosts paid $37.50 per child for nightly accommodation and breakfast, and all schools staying at least two nights,” Tanya Coxon explains.

“But we are also actively encouraging homeowners, who will receive around $45 per child per night; a four-bedroom, two-bathroom home is plenty for a school of about 20, and GIJ can supply inflatable mattresses where needed.” Barbara and Max Lightbody were first-time hosts this year, with 24 students from Adelaide’s Heathfield High School enjoying farm life at their Kongorong property ‘Aberfoyle’.

“We regularly host garden open days and weddings, but it’s the first time that we have had a school group and we would encourage more people to do it,” Barbara said. “We had some kids in the old dairy with a teacher in the milk room, and then I had boys in our old eight-ball room, girls in the hut and in my daughter’s old room, a teacher in the office, and one in the enclosed verandah,” she said.

“We had a lovely time 5 7 with them, and they were most grateful 8 9 remember that they are out at The Barn all 2 day and late into the 8 6 evening, so all you really need to worry about is 1 organising breakfast and making them feel 2 4 welcome.”

Touch Football in Mount Gambier is back for the new summer season.

The season will kick off at Vansittart Park this Wednesday with 12 teams nominating so far.

In what promises to be a very keenly contested season across two grades, it will be last year’s A grade premiers, The Henley Sharks who will start as red hot favorites to retain their A grade title. The Sharks went undefeated last season and with the return from absence of some their stars in the form of Sally Gazzard and Ciaran Buckley, the overall strength of their squad will be enhanced even further. Most A grade teams have recruited handily in the off season and with the Tiki Roos being decimated by injury, the contenders will be lining up for a crack at the Sharks outfit come finals time. In the B grade ,the Vestas Vikings will again be the team to watch. Led by the supremely fit Matt Boylan and with a wealth of experience at their disposal the Vikings will be a hard team to match up against.

In a coup for the region Touch Football SA will be presenting the inaugural Border Clash tournament in Mount Gambier with the two day event taking place at Blue Lake Sports Park on October 31 and November 1.

The highly anticipated tournament will run across several divisions in a State vs State format to decide the best elite and regional teams from South Australia and Victoria. Six State League men’s and women’s teams, from both Adelaide and Melbourne, will compete in the premier division with the winner taking bragging rights in a State of Origin style contest. The regional division will feature teams from Mount Gambier, Portland, Warrnambool, Ballarat, Bendigo and the Mallee.

The locals will be up against it with Victorian teams dominating the nominations but the Mount squad will confident in taking on all comers to keep the title on South Australian soil. The event will also feature a mixed open division so that any team can nominate for their chance to join in the action and have a crack at the prize money on offer.

Local Sport FOOTBALL Matt’s big 40 days by Peter Argent Making a call on football over cricket this year, the next few weeks until the 2015 AFL draft held at the Convention Centre in Adelaide on Tuesday, November 24 will be nerve racking and the result, career defining for the astute young sporting talent from Mount Gambier, Matthew Allen. There are shades of current West Coast Eagles captain Shannon Hurn about this lad from the ‘Mount’. Like Hurn was a decade ago, Allen is an elite junior sportsman in both the summer and winter passions of football and cricket. Hurn decided that if his opportunities in the oval ball game didn’t eventuate, he was still capable of have a cricket at top level cricket in his

early to mid-twenties. Allen had been through similar thought processes when making his call on our national football code as his first option. At the SA Redbacks, Hurn had a rookie contact, before committing to football while Allen also had a rookie position with SA Big Bash League T20 franchise, the Strikers. Both have been known for their natural leadership qualities as well. Last weekend, after arriving on Thursday October 8, Allen, like 80 other of the most exciting talents in the code, paraded their football and athletic abilities to recruitment staff from all 18 AFL clubs at Etihad Stadium.

Allen confirmed it was a hard decision to choice football over cricket, but stress fractures from bowling helped him make the final call. “They (the stress fractures) hindered my bowling, but there is no problem their form a football perspective,” Allen said.“I was a left arm swing bowler and only sent them down at about 115kph.

“I loved my batting and yes - that 199 not out is still my highest score.

“I’m still dirty that I didn’t go all the way, as I would have loved to have made a double century.”

Allen’s foundation cricket club is Yahl and he started his football with the North Gambier Tigers. He has been boarding at St Peter’s College in Adelaide since Year 10, being captain of the cricket team and the football sides this year.

As expected Allen’s have been playing first XI cricket and First XVIII football since he arrived in the college system. A 193cm, 92.5 kg footballer who has played predominately as a key forward in his youth, he sees his best opportunity at the top level as a third tall forward who can spend time in the midfield. When talking about his desires over the draft period, Allen suggested it would be ideal if he was drafted to an Adelaide or Victorian club, but suggested he’d go anywhere to follow this ambition. Allen explained he has had a range of coaches who have been instrumental in his progression over the journey so far. “At St Peter’s Darren Trevena and Matthew Earl have been great,” Allen said.

“Back at home Michael Silvy and Andrew Whan have been important.” In his first year at St Peter’s Allen returned to

He regards that title, along with playing with the state under 18s football this year and captaining the SACA under 17s to a national cricket championships among his highlights. Local Sport FOOTBALL Redman enhances credentials by Peter Argent Millicent lad Mason Redman didn’t nothing but enhance his credentials at the 2015 AFL Draft Combine held at Etihad Stadium from Thursday October 8, to Sunday, October 11.

With the cream of the AFL talent available for the 2015 AFL draft to be held in Adelaide on show, Redman performances both on and off the field, just added to a great football resume he has produced coming into the combine. This culminated a huge season for the 18-year-old. “It stated with the SA academy game in February,” Redman said. “There was an under 18s trials three minor round games at that level before the state under 18s trial, and then a couple of reserves match with the Bays.

“Then I played in four games for the SA under 18s including

two in Melbourne.

“And a highlight was my first league game against Port Adelaide.

“I believe I can be called a utility, having played as a forward for the state under 18s and as a midfielder /defender for Glenelg.

“I look up to Brendan Goddard and base my game around the way he plays.”

At 186cms and needing to put some muscle mass on his 77kg frame, Redman has many of the AFL attributes that recruiting staff like. Along with strong endurance, which was proved by his top 10 finish and a 10 minute-12 second performance in the 3km time trial, Redman has elite kicking, marking and handball skills, along with being aggressive in the defensive attributes of his game. Redman first started playing football as a nine-year-old in the Millicent under 12 and progressed through the grades. “I have had strong counsel along the way,” Redman said. “Craig Turner, my underage coach is one.

“Peter Collins, my fitness guru from Mount Gambier was instrumental in my pre-season preparation.

“At the Saints Steve Duldig, Nat Robbins and Mike Reilly were important mentors ”Andrew Robinson was the person who gave me the first opportunity at A grade level as well.”

Redman regarded being a part of the 2014 SA Country Football Championships victory at Kadina as a very important confidence booster. “I learned a lot about the preparation of the elite players from the Murray South East over that weekend,” Redman said. “The bus trip back from Kadina on the Sunday night was an experience as well.

“Winning that championship was a bit like a premiership for me as during my time at Millicent I played in just one single finals match.” Redman also reflected on the efforts of Glenelg to get him up to Adelaide and the interview he had with Nick Stevens, Matt Lokan and Brenton Hole and the family home, which was a part of the catalyst to doing the 2015 pre-season with The Bays. When quizzed about the

chance he may have to move interstate to follow his dream to become an AFL footballer, the affable lad, didn’t see any issues with it, after spending this year with his Auntie Kahlee in Adelaide. SA Talent Manager and Redman’s under 18s state coach Brenton Phillips believed there is an argument for up to 20 South Australians to be selected in either the senior or rookie draft this year.He has been impressed with Redman efforts and believes he could be collected anywhere from early in the second round to the middle of the fourth round such are the uncertainties in this draft. The 2015 AFL draft will be held in Adelaide on Tuesday, November 24, and the rookie draft on November 27.

ATHLETICS Little Athletics searching for teenage athletes The Mount Gambier & District Little Athletics Club’s 2015-16 season is about to leap into action, with a Come and Try sessions being held last Friday and nother one this coming Friday from 4.45pm at Mount Gambier High School. From Tiny Tots (age 4) through to teens, almost 200 athletes will work at developing their skills and beating their personal bests in a variety of track & field events every Friday night throughout Terms 4 and 1. This year, the Mount Gambier Little Athletics Club is issuing a special call-out for senior athletes aged 13-17 to join the club’s existing close-knit group of around 30 skilled seniors, who have been achieving some fantastic results over the past 12 months. “All the senior athletes were key members of their high school’s interschool competitions this year, with many winning age group trophies and attending the SA Schools competitions in Adelaide as well,” said club secretary Jaala Fosdike. “Senior athletes all over the country are frequently asked by their peers why they continue to participate in Little Athletics, with the false belief that the competition is meant for children, but many regard track and field as complementary to their other sporting pursuits, with the weekly competition helping to maintain fitness for football, tennis, soccer, hockey and netball.” While the Little Athletics season is the pathway to the State Individual Championships in March each year, the families of the senior athletes have also travelled across South Australia and Victoria in order to compete in high-level events and receive training from nationallyacclaimed professionals. The Mount Gambier club boasts the membership of talented athletes such as Luke Bull and Olivia Dukalskis who have recently returned from the Under 15 National Football Championships and National Netball Championships respectively. Olivia attributes a lot of her

netball success to the skills she builds through athletics, while Luke describes the sport as both fun and enjoyable. “I was lucky enough to compete in the Little Athletics National Championships in 2013 and have met people from all over Australia that I stay in contact with and compete against”, Luke said. Jasper Whitehead believes that for his coccer career the main aspect would have to be speed, which he has developed solely through Little Athletics. Luke Bull, Isabel Redemski and Shylah Fosdike were all selected to attend a training camp in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport, an honour only offered to 20 athletes per State each year. Both medal winning sprinters, Redemski and Fosdike, train year-round with local accredited athletics coach, Sally Taylor, pushing one another in cardio, strength and agility sessions three times a week in order to give the highly practiced metro athletes a run for their money. The two Mount Gambier High School students have their sights firmly set on becoming first-time entrants in February’s Athletics Australia Junior Championships. “I just want to compete this year, and hopefully make the finals, I am hoping in upcoming seasons I can make it to Nationals with an increase in my training,” said Fosdike, whose ultimate goal is to represent Australia. Motor 10th Anniversary Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb next month The battle for legend status is set to continue between local entrant Peter Gazzard and Victoria’s Kevin Mackrell, with both drivers confirmed as starters for next month’s 10th Anniversary Trident Tyre Centre Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb. The rivals have shared the podium at every Mount Gambier event, with Gazzard gaining the edge in six out of nine encounters in order to ensure that the trophy remains on home soil. The duo will be joined by approximately 135 drivers from across

South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales from November 6-8, with final entries set to close on Thursday.

South Eastern Automobile Club (SEAC) president, Paul Heenan, estimates that up to 80 per cent of those nominating have participated in every race. “The Hillclimb has developed a huge following, and we are immensely proud of its success and reputation as a premier regional motorsport event,” he said. The Trident Tyre Centre Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb was the

vision of late motor racing competitor and official, Lionel Stingers, who could see that the event’s unique location would quickly become its the key attraction, with the picturesque race circuit winding past volcanic craters adjacent to the famous Blue Lake.

“While most hillclimb events are carried out in fairly barren environments, all of the competitors that come to Mount Gambier can’t believe how pretty it is and what a fantastic stretch of road it is; it’s a really great wide, open, fast bit of road to drive on,” said Peter Gazzard.

The course begins at the bottom of the Valley Lakes crater, and features a 1.4-kilometre climb containing 16 corners. Gazzard’s fastest time to date in his Mitsubishi Evo IX has been 50.77 seconds. “It’s nice and tight down the bottom, fast and flowing in the middle, and then there’s the handbrake turn at the top ‘bus stop’ and then you power to the finish line,” he said. “I love it all; it just all flows so well and there is nothing I would change - the worst part about it is that it is all too quick and you’ve got to wait so long before you have another go.”

The Trident Tyre Centre Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb is open to more than 30 different vehicle classes ranging from historic through to improved

production, sports cars and fourwheel drive saloons. Friday’s racing has been set aside for the classic and historic cars, along with a special session reserved for SEAC members.

“Most of them are working as event officials throughout the weekend, so we wanted to create an opportunity for them to have a run,” Mr Heenan said.

Scrutineering for the weekend entrants will also take place on the Friday afternoon at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds from 5 o’clock, with members of the public welcome.
