LOCAL Rising to the challenge Tanya Lowe didn’t set out to end up on a promotional poster as an ambassador for Maxine’s Burn but that’s exactly where she ended up. Mind you, she did achieve what she wanted – to get a whole lot fitter and healthier. She has

seen the Maxine’s Burn 12 Week Challenge advertised last year and just when she was about to start her heathy lifestyle journey, she snapped her Achilles, ending that plan before it had a chance to begin. Of course, the Achilles injury also meant she put on a few extra kilos. “I couldn’t do any exercise but, of course, I still ate and drank whatever I wanted,” Tanya said. So with her rehabilitation complete, she signed up this February. It meant taking one of those confronting before photos and uploading it. “I couldn’t believe I looked like that,” she said. Anyone who has seen Tanya on a sporting field, knows how competitive she is, and that was about to work to her advantage. “I set myself a goal of finishing top 10,” she said. Not surprisingly she did – finishing fourth in what was a 13,000 strong field of participants. “It wasn’t a diet,” Tanya said. “It was a change of lifestyle.” The fitness side of the challenge was the easiest for the long time netballer. Tougher, was the focus on choosing healthy options, at home and when easting out. “It is easier than you think,” Tanya said. “I was ordering the grilled fish with salad instead of pasta. It was learning to say no to those yummy sweet things and save them to have just as treats.” Tanya admits even after signing up, she was sceptical about just what impact a 12 week challenge would have. “But I’ve kept that photo and I still can’t believe the change,” she said. “It takes four

weeks for you to notice a difference, eight weeks for your friends to notice and another 12 weeks for you to realise that that’s what you look like.” Tanya’s efforts saw her rewarded as an ambassador for Maxine’s for six

months. She is now one of the support staff online, helping people on their own challenge who might be struggling. Tanya genuinely believes Maxine’s Burn works but she certainly hasn’t gone about pushing it on people. “It doesn’t cost anything except time and effort and good choices.” Maxine’s is a supplement program, not a meal replacement program, and Tanya felt like she was able to eat well. The challenge provides extensive online support, with meal plans, training programs and general advice. Tanya also got to go to Melbourne and work with some of Australia’s leading fitness trainers as part of her reward for her stunning transformation. Maxine’s runs two challenges again – one starting in February and one in August.

LOCAL Mount Gambier set to change colour More than 30 business have already pledged to Paint The Town Purple, between Monday, October 5, to Sunday, October 18, to support Limestone Coast Relay For Life and the fight against cancer. The Limestone Coast Relay For Life (LCRFL) Committee have been gaining support from businesses in Mount Gambier and Port MacDonnell including the Chamber of Commerce and the Main Corner and hope to get even more on board to ensure the commerce area is more colourful than the Blue Lake. As purple is the official colour of Relay For Life, businesses are asked to create a wave of purple by decorating their windows with anything purple. Ideas include using clothing, flowers, balloons, cakes, tablecloths, toys, or purple items that suits their business focus, and possibly have staff dress in purple. A starter pack including purple balloons, LCRFL flyers and brochures are available by phoning Maxine Tuffnell on 0418 838 930. Businesses are encouraged to provide a photo of their decorated business window, displays, and/or purple staff, which will displayed on www.facebook.com/ LimestoneCoastRelayForLife. The inaugural Paint

The Town Purple perpetual trophy will be presented to the business who receives the most Facebook Likes for their uploaded photo by noon Monday, October 19, at a Relay for Life get together to thank businesses for their support at the Main Corner Mount Gambier, at 5.30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend. The committee hope that people will search out and support businesses who display their community spirit by being part of Paint The Town Purple and in return it is hoped that more people will be encouraged to participate in the 2016 Limestone Coast Relay for Life. For more information about Paint The Town Purple or Limestone Coast Relay For Life, please contact Maxine Tuffnell on 0418 838 930 or visit www.facebook.com/ LimestoneCoast RelayForLife.

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS

CRUIE SHIPS BACK ON THE AGENDA Portland’s cruise ship committee has met for the first time ahead of the 2016 season, heralding the official countdown to the arrival of P&O Cruises in the very early new year. The Pacific Jewel will visit on January 7, next year, with the Pacific Eden following closely on January 13 and again on February 6. Glenelg Shire Council’s Economic Development and Planning Department Manager Neil Burgess said, with a combined total of more than 5000 people expected to disembark over the period, the committee’s main aim was to ensure businesses capitalised on the increased market. “Last year it was about establishing ourselves as a place for P&O Cruises to return to, with passengers asked to complete and online survey following their visit,” Mr Burgess said. “We were proud of the positive feedback we received and want to ensure this continues in 2016.” Mr Burgess said Christmas and New Year was already a popular time for tourists in Portland and with the Portland Carnival remaining in operation for the first two ship visits, it was essential that people were aware of what was ahead. “While tours will operate for each ship, we expect a large number of people will stay in town to enjoy the festive atmosphere,” he said. “This is the time for businesses to start planning to make sure they are well supplied and stand out.” It’s estimated more than $1 million was spent locally during P&O Cruises’ four visits to the Port of Portland in 2015. The figure was the immediate spend, as calculated by Glenelg Shire Council’s Economic Development and Planning Department, and didn’t take into account the flow-on benefit to the Shire that would come on the back of this cash flow injection. More than 1800 passengers, including crew, were on board each ship, creating a buzz of activity in Portland on each of the days.

Method Preheat the oven to 180C. Lightly grease six 10cm loosebottomed tart pans. Line the tart pans with the pastry, trimming the excess. Chill the tart shells for 10 minutes. Line the tart shells with baking paper and fill with pastry weights or uncooked rice, then bake for 7 minutes. Remove the paper and weights, then return to the oven for a further 2 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and dry. Set aside to cool completely in the pans. Place the chocolate in a heatproof

bowl set over a saucepan of gently simmering water (don’t let the bowl touch the water), stirring until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly. Use a palette knife to spread the dulce de leche in the tart shells, then pour over the chocolate, gently swirling the tart to completely cover the caramel. Sprinkle each tart with salt and serve.

AT THE CINEMA EVEREST - NOW SHOWING On the morning of May 10, 1996, climbers from two expeditions start their final ascent toward the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever encountered by man.

LOCAL Taking care of cancer affected kids for 30 years Riding 970 kilometres in six days is challenging but nothing compared with the challenges faced by the kids this fundraiser is for, every day. The Duncan Basheer Hannon (DBH) Road Raise event is a new fundraising initiative for CANTEEN – a charity aimed at supporting children affected by cancer, whether they are living with cancer themselves, or if they have a sibling or parent, who is suffering or has died as a result of cancer. “Ninety percent of the young people we work with fall into the category of having a parent that has died from cancer,” CANTEEN partnership manager Jodi Farley said. CANTEEN is celebrating three decades of helping young people this year and that’s what inspired a new initiative to raise not just funds for, but also awareness of, the critical cause. “We thought we’d come up with something new and we had never done a ride or an event like this before,” Jodi said. And organisers have been overwhelmed by the level of community support, particularly from the regional centres on the DBH Road Raise route. “Meningie, Mount Gambier and Warrnambool have all been fantastic with organising other fundraising events,” Jodi said. Warrnambool, of course, is home to one of the DBH Road Raise most recognisable riders – former

Sydney Swan turned Adelaide Crows midfield coach – Ryan O’Keefe (pictured above). Former AFL footballer, now radio broadcaster Andrew Jarman (pictured left) and his daughter Charlie, join O’Keefe as the celebrities on the ride, while former NBL star Mark Davis is appearing at functions along the way, including the Mount Gambier event – a Sportsmans Night at South Gambier featuring Jarman, O’Keefe and Davis, as well as guest speakers from CANTEEN. “Being our first year we wanted just a small group,” Jodi said. “We wanted it to be exclusive and really get to know the riders along the way.” The ride was the brainchild of Jodi’s husband Shane Farley, a keen cyclist, and he and a number of other corporate leaders are also jumping in the saddle for the CANTEEN cause. And that includes Duncan Basheer Hannon general manager Steve Nolis. “Our naming rights partner, Duncan Basheer Hannon, have been fantastic with media support, and putting their staff behind this event,” Jodi said. The DBH Road Raise ride leaves Adelaide on October 11, heads to Meningie before arriving in Kingston on October 12. Mount Gambier is next on the itinerary on October 13, with the riders staying at the Commodore on the Park. “We are having dinner there before the Sportsmans Night and would love people to come and say hi,” Jodi said. The Sportsmans Night is at South Gambier Football Club from 7pm with all proceeds going to CANTEEN. There will be bar snacks and drinks available with tickets available from Sportspower Mount Gambier and the Commodore on the Park. Adults are $30 and Under 18 tickets are $20. Tickets will be available at the door. Donation tins will also be placed at the Commodore on the Park or you can donate online at www. roadraise.com.au

COONAWARRA CABERNET WEEKEND FEATURE Celebrating Coonawarra’s signature drop

R

Coonawarra will again celebrate all that is wonderful about its iconic Cabernet Sauvignon wines during the annual Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations from October 15-18, 2015. This year the CCC has been inspired by the success of last year’s event, and extended to a four-day Coonawarra experience with a whopping 36 events to choose from this year. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations program quite as large as the one on offer this year, but it’s one we hope will really excite and entice lots of locals and visitors to join us,” said Wine Industry Officer for the Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated Cathy Hughes. The celebrations will focus on an engaging mix of great regional food, fun live music options, and once in a life time wine experiences for visitors to indulge in, including a very special cabernet masterclass, a retrospective tasting, and the second triennial Australian Cabernet Symposium. Ms Hughes said this year’s theme was not only about celebrating the region’s signature wine, but also about providing educational experiences for those keen to learn more about what goes into making and marketing cabernet sauvignon wines.“This year we are staging the second triennial Australian Cabernet Symposium; a one day event that will appeal to both viticulturist and winemakers, as well as the general public, who are seriously interested in

acquiring a broader appreciation about cabernet wines,” Ms Hughes said.“Then there is the Cabernet Masterclass that will pit six of Coonawarra’s wines against four esteemed French and Californian wines, to see which region produces the holy grail of Cabernet wines; a wine with balance and harmony of fruit, alcohol, tannin and acid.” The Australian Cabernet Symposium provides industry colleagues and wine lovers with the opportunity to learn about the history of the variety, as well as the innovations and developments occurring in the fields of wine research, viticulture, winemaking and the marketing of cabernet sauvignon. International and Australian

experts will be on hand to share their insights about the Coonawarra’s signature blend – cabernet sauvignon. The retrospective tasting is an opportunity experience the superior aging ability of Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon through tasting wines from 2005 and older – a chance to compare the development of cabernet is an opportunity for true aficionados to miss. The cabernet masterclass is another of those unique opportunities to experience the rich history of cabernet. In 1976 Steven Spurrier, a British wine merchant, organised a blind tasting of four Bordeaux clarets and six Californian cabernets by French wine judges. Spurrier sold only French wine and believed the French wines would win. That wasn’t to be the case and the California wines performed well, surprising most. This year’s masterclass includes two of those same French Chateau wines and tow of the Californian drops, right alongside six Coonawarra offerings. And then there’s the wide variety of cellar door events, ranging from the traditional Breakfast and Sparkling Cabernet at Balnaves, to the degustation delight of the Coonawarra 5 X 5 Winemakers Dinner that sees Bowen Estate, Balnaves of Coonawarra, Katnook Estate, Leconfield and Majella Wines match their wines to the culinary genius of Simon Bowen, of Pipers of Penola. Patrick of Coonawarra is not only presenting an exclusive tasting of four vintages of cabernet sauvignon, but also showcasing its sparkling and Appelation cider at a Sunday brunch. There’s jazz, pizza, sweet treats and the usual attractions from visiting not just Coonawarra but also Penola.

Method Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. Using an electric mixer, beat butter, sugar and vanilla for 5 minutes or until light and fluffy. Add egg. Beat until combined (mixture may curdle). Sift flour and cocoa powder over butter mixture. Stir to combine. Remove 1/4 of the dough. Shape both portions of dough into a disc. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. Using large portion of dough, shape level tablespoons of mixture into 2cm x 4cm bar shapes. Place on prepared trays, leaving room for

spreading. Using the end of a wooden spoon, make a 1cm x 3cm indentation in the centre of each rectangle. Fill each indent with 1 teaspoon caramel. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Roll remaining dough between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Using a small sharp knife, cut into 3cm x 5cm rectangles. Re-roll scraps and repeat to make 15 rectangles. Place 1 rectangle on top of each caramel-filled bar. Press lightly to seal. Freeze for 15 minutes. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Stand on trays for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely Place dark chocolate in a heatproof, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on MEDIUM (50%) for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds with a metal spoon, or until melted and smooth. Dip top side of 1 bar into chocolate. Gently shake off excess. Place bar, chocolate-side up, on a wire rack set over a baking tray lined with baking paper. Set aside for 30 minutes or until set. Serve.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP said the Coalition Government has delivered another increase to the aged pension meaning pensioners in Barker are now up to $88.20 per fortnight better off since the Coalition Government was elected. “Age pensioners deserve our support and once again the age pension is going up under the Coalition Government,” Mr Pasin said. “Following indexation linked to the Consumer Price Index, the maximum single age pension will rise to $867 per fortnight and $1,307 for couples combined.

age pension has been cut- it hasn’t.” More than 170,000 pensioners with modest assets will have their pensions increased by an average of more than $30 per fortnight as part of the Government’s plans for fairer access to a more sustainable pension that will come into effect in January 2017. “The Coalition understands the importance of these increases to help pensioners and allowance recipients to keep up with the cost of living,” Mr Pasin said. He explained that the adult rates of pensions and allowances are increased twice a year; in March and September, to ensure they keep up with the cost of living. Pensions are adjusted using two measuresthe Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index or the Consumer Price Index- whichever produces the higher result. The result is then compared to a Male Total Average Earnings Benchmark. If this benchmark gives a higher pension increase, then the benchmark is used to adjust pensions. “The Coalition Government is committed to ensuring our welfare system looks after those who need it most and that this assistance is sustainable. Our welfare system must assist not only those who need it today but those who will come to rely on it in the future,” Mr Pasin said. WBFL - Grand Finals

Local Sport FOOTBALL South Gambier ends North’s run in overtime South Gambier has claimed its first A Grade premiership since 2009 with a nailbiting overtime victory over reigning premiers North Gambier. The 14 point victory came after scores were tied away at 12.9 apiece at the final siren but it was all one way traffic in the extra time as South scored 2.3 to the Tigers’ solitary behind. Brent Howard claimed the Mick Ryan Medal for best on ground. It was a day that had it all - perfect weather, tight contests and a large crowd cheering on their favourite teams. Only the Reserves grand final was a one-sided contest, with North Gambier claiming its fourth consecutive titles. The day started with a tight Under 13 flag decider with the Saints and Demons fighting out another arm wrestle of a contest. The lead changed numerous times but when the final siren sounded it was the Saints with their noses in front. The Under 15 grand final

produced even more excitement with the game drawn at full time and at the end of extra time. West Gambier started the match hot favourites but it was the Demons in the box seat with a couple of minutes left in extra time, sitting

two goals clear but the minor premiers found a way and when the match went to first score wins, it was West that managed to slot the match winning behind. West was also favourite in the Under 17 football grand final but the

Demons had other ideas and by the final siren South had recorded an upset victory by 19 points after trailing by three at the final change.

Local Sport NETBALL Millicent snatch seventh consecutive premiership from the jaws of defeat It was hard to imagine the A Grade grand final could come close to matching the tension, drama and standard of the 2015 finals series thus far but it did and if North Gambier was fatigued by last weekend’s epic preliminary final, it didn’t show, as the Tigers came out of the blocks early to not just match the reigning premiers but to get the better of them. Millicent did score the first the goals of the match but after that it was the Tigers who built an early narrow lead as Emily Pietsch drove strongly to the circle and connected well with Caroline Davey to ensure the Saints defenders were unable to set themselves and exert their usual pressure on the delivery and shot. There was plenty of whistle early in the match as well, which impeded the chances of either side to establish their usual flow of ball movement, and in the end the very even quarter ended with Millicent up by one. Davey converted 10 from

11 for the quarter, with Donna Denton netting nine from 14. The second quarter followed a similar pattern to the first with the continuing whistle making it tough for teams to create turnovers. The shooting in this quarter veiled the pressure both defensive combinations were exerting, with Alannah Campbell and Kaitlin Smith blanketing Danika Jolley and Denton and making Millicent work the angles to eventually open up some space. But in the end Millicent netted 12 from 13 and North 14 from 16 as the match entered the main break with scores locked away. Ash Kalantarian and Lisa Duldig’s work through the mid court and driving onto the circle was pivotal as neither side could really establish their usual free flowing transition game. Kimmi Varcoe started to shut down the space on Pietsch and Mel Renko was making life tough for Melinda Squire. Some timely interceptions from Alex Walker and Hayley Dunn late in the half

also ensured, the scoreboard remained locked at 25-all. Millicent injected the fresh legs of Keah Lynch into the contest for the third quarter but it was all the Tigers as Smith and Campbell started to earn some turnovers and errors started to creep into the usually composed Saints’ game, courtesy of the unrelenting defensive pressure all down the court from the Tigers. Walker was supreme in this quarter but uncharacteristically, as quickly as she could take an interception, North was pressuring Millicent into error with many of the turnovers coming in the form of misplaced balls through the mid court and quite a few balls thrown out of court. Davey and Abbey Duncan also combined to perfection and missed only one shot for the quarter between them as they went back to the playbook that had served them so well in the early part of the season with Duncan front cutting strongly and working off Davey screens so that eventually the space would open up for Davey at the post. Were it not for Walker’s determination to win the ball back, the hard running of Duldig and the workrate and accuracy of Denton, Millicent may have been even further in arrears than the five goal three quarter time deficit, which had been as great as six during the latter part of the third. In the early going, it looked like North had the composure in attack and intensity in defence to maintain the buffer as Millicent entered the unknown territory of trailing in a grand final heading into the final stanza. The deficit certainly had Dunn and Walker stepping up to the plate and halfway through the quarter, the

duo rally started to deny Davey and Duncan any time and space and the interceptions started to flow. Varcoe also came to life with a handful of critical touches and picking up of loose balls, after debutante Pietsch had probably had the better of her more experienced opponent in the first three quarters. In offence it was predictable yet unstoppable as Denton dug in, combining with Duldig to work the ball in small triangles to eventually earn the shot and with a couple of minutes to play, North’s advantage was gone and they were playing catch up. Even then, the match stayed in a holding pattern of shared possession but both side’s defensive efforts did not see that possession converted into shooting opportunities and in the end, Millicent held on for a seventh consecutive title, their hardest fought yet in that

run, and the Tigers were left to ponder what might have been. After North scored 17 for the third quarter, in a match where they hit double figures in the first three, Millicent’s defenders were irresistible with their commitment to turn the match and North was only able to score six in the frenetic final quarter. The match was a fitting end to the high quality 2015 A Grade finals series. It showcased the association’s best with 2015 best and fairest and runner-up up, Denton and Duldig supreme, particularly in the final quarter, while at the other end Davey, who has had such an impact since joining North as playing coach this season, continued her finals dominance, after missing the end of the home and away season with a knee injury, netting 38 from 42. The defenders were also impressive with Smith and Campbell making life as tough

as it has been for the Saints this season, while Renko proved why she was named in the Tea of the Year with another blanketing performance on the defensive wing. Dunn, arguably one of the most consistent performers in the past decade, was again a pillar of strength at the back of the court, while Walker must have been part of the umpire’s discussion when choosing best on court – the young defender creating a number of turnovers in the final quarter and was the pick of all four defenders on court over the entire match. Denton, though, earned the nod, just as she did in the corresponding match last year with the Di Facey Premiership Cup again heading back to McLaughlin Park.
