TACKLING THE REIOG’N DRUG ISSUES A new four-year $1.2million nonresidential rehabilitation program will help Warrnambool and surrounding district people to beat their ice and other poly drug problems. The Great South Coast Drug Treatment Consortium and its lead agency WRAD will operate the pilot program based in Warrnambool. The therapeutic day program has been funded as part of the Victorian Government’s Ice Action Plan. It was officially launched at the Warrnambool Community House this week. Titled `Sliding Doors’, the free six-week program is a recovery-based model offering a broad range of interventions in group settings to address psychological, social and physical wellbeing. WRAD Director Geoff Soma said it would be a more intense program than existing outpatient services available in the Great South Coast to help people deal with issues related to ice and poly substance abuse. “The pilot program is being introduced based on a need in this region identified by the government,” Mr Soma said. It is one of nine programs funded in Victoria and the first of its type in the south-west. ‘Sliding Doors’ Program Coordinator Angela Alexander said the new service was for people who had made a commitment to stop using their drug of concern. “It is an intensive support program designed to help develop coping skills, while providing people with ICE and other poly drug use problems recovery and relapse prevention strategies,” she said. “It will focus on varied therapies, job and employability skills, healthy living opportunities, relaxation and drug education.” She added that the program would help people to maintain motivation and to provide the skills required to stop their substance abuse. The initial pilot will be based in Warrnambool providing a local response and will be starting in October.

Fundraising success for prostate cancer

Member for Barker, Tony Pasin’s Big Aussie BBQ held earlier this month, attracted donations of $1000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. “Those funds will help the Prostate Cancer Foundation with their fundraising target of $1M from BBQs held across the nation,” Mr Pasin said. “I am grateful for the level of support for this important initiative which not only raise important funds but also awareness of the disease and the need for men to consult their GP’s and have the appropriate health checks. “I pay tribute to the Richard Harry, Des Hinton and Malcolm Porter, members of the Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group, who assisted with the BBQ and more importantly were on hand to provide support and information to members of our community afflicted by the disease. “More than 20,000 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Notwithstanding the rate of diagnosis and the fact that prostate cancer claims the lives of more Australia men per annum than breast cancer women, awareness of the disease remains low. “I wish also to thank Baxter Hire and Shelton’s Butchers for their in kind donations, without which this event would not have been the success it was.”

LOCAL Young carers help endangered bird Natural Resources South East and young carers from Carers SA have teamed up to help the regionally vulnerable Hooded Plover as part of National Plover Day last week. The Hooded Plover is a medium-sized sandy-brown plover with a white nape and pink legs. It has a black head and collar that looks like a hood. The Hooded Plover lays its eggs in the sand along the beach and in dunes which are susceptible to attacks from foxes and dogs. Four wheel drives and people are also risks. Natural Resources South East regularly conducts fox baiting in coastal areas to protect eggs and works with groups such as Friends of Shorebirds SE to provide shelter and protection for the eggs and signage for beach visitors. Natural Resources South East volunteer coordinator Natalie Misic said the opportunity to work with young carers came about because of a desire from the carers themselves. “A small team of young carers including Laryssa King, Caitlin Bawden, Shelby Harwood, Colby Harwood and Emily Disselbach had an idea to plant a tree or do something helpful for the environment and wildlife,” Ms Misic said. “Through Carers SA Young Carer Worker, Kym Galluccio we organised a meeting to discuss this further. I

was able to share information about the Hooded Plover and the group was very excited to help this threatened bird.” Young carers are children and young people between 6 and 25 years of age who provide assistance to families where someone has an illness, disability or mental illness. Carers SA Young Carer Worker Kym Galluccio said many of these young carers have to juggle providing care to a family member on top of school and everyday activities and responsibilities. “It is wonderful to work alongside young carers as they are often strong, independent, responsible and amazing young people,” she said. The young carer program assists young carers by providing peer support and fun activities to give them reprieve from their caring role. The young carers have been busy learning about the Hooded Plover throughout this school term and have created artwork to raise money for resources needed to help protect the species. The young carers will also be participating in a field trip on 9 October which will include a beach clean-up and habitat protection with Natural Resources South East and Friends of Shorebirds SE. “The young carers are really looking forward to the ‘Hoodie bird field trip’ and helping to support a really good cause,” Ms Galluccio said. “They’re excited about the hoodie birds and want to be a part of raising awareness to protect them. “It has been a great partnership between all involved, the young carers really wanted to do something positive for the environment and it is great that an outlet has been found for them. “Young carers have a lot of responsibility to carry at a young age and it is so wonderful to see them relaxing and having fun together.”

STUDENTS COLLECT HEALTH DATA Deakin University Warrnambool students have collected childhood health measures across the Great South Coast in a project that aims to transform the community approach to promoting a healthy childhood. The students from health science and nursing courses in Warrnambool volunteered to assist in collecting data alongside the South West Primary Care Partnership. Their work is being recognised on Monday 21 September with certificates presented by South West Primary Care Partnership Executive Officer Mark Brennan. Health Promotion Educator at Deakin University Warrnambool Campus, Laura Stevenson, said the students had benefitted from being involved in the research and appreciated the opportunity to do hands-on work in the community. “It’s beneficial for students to get away from textbooks and have a real-life experience and to contribute to an important research project,” Ms Stevenson said. Director of childhood health monitoring from the WHO Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention and Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr Claudia Strugnell, said the data collected by students is helping local communities to understand the health of their children. The students have taken the statistics of 1900 children across the region and helped them to complete an online survey about their eating, drinking and exercise habits. Mr Brennan said using local students to compile the information was helping to build evidence to support local communities to measure the health and wellbeing of children. The process has started in Portland with the SEA Change program and is now being rolled out in Hamilton with GenR8 Change.

In 2012 Bonnie Stewart established the non-profit organisation With Love & Lipstick to raise awareness about violence against women and to give a voice to women suffering in an abusive relationship. In 2013 the campaign was launched in the South East and more than 150 boxes of love have been distributed each year to the women and children who are supported by the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service. The campaign started on August 1 and will run through until November 25 – White Ribbon Day. In Australia one in three women will experience some form of violence in their lifetime, it is time to break the silence. Last year the campaign received an overwhelming response from the local community and hopefully the community can replicate the same quantity of generous donations by November this year. “We are hoping people in the community will make a box of love, filled with the items listed below and donate it to the Mount Gambier Public Library, National Tiles, Decor House or K&S Fuels Jubilee Highway,” local organiser Nicole Milosevic said.

Highly anticipated project begins in Portland The wait is over – work on the Portland Youth Activity and Skate Space begins this Saturday. By early 2016, Portland will have a new raised skate bowl, half basketball court, shelters, seating, event space, BBQs and lighting. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Robert Halliday said the highly anticipated project had already gathered plenty of community interest. “We expect this space will be a huge drawcard – not only for locals but also visitors to the region,” he said. “The current skate park precinct will be fenced from Saturday before removal of the existing metal skate elements, shelter and BBQ. “Landscaping will then mark the beginning of the construction phase of the project, which we expect will come together quickly following the Christmas break.” The project was designed with the assistance of local young people. A large scale plan of the project will be displayed on the fencing to provide information to the community.

LOCAL Children’s reading program hits major milestone The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is celebrating a major milestone with the distribution of its 10,000th book to children in the Glenelg Shire. Now United Way Glenelg, which coordinates the local program along with major partner Portland Aluminium, is calling for support so it can expand to more children. There are 527 children registered in the program with another 70 on the waiting list. United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Angelino said the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) was building a life-long love of books among local children and she hoped all those wanting to share the joy of reading would have the opportunity. “We encourage families who have benefited from the program, and who are in a financial position to do so, to pay it forward by considering sponsoring another child to join,” Ms Angelino said. “We will be writing to every family currently receiving books to consider this as an option. “It only costs $6.50 per month to sponsor a child so we can get more books into the community and to the children who are waiting.” The program started in September 2013 and delivers age-appropriate books for free to local families. The DPIL has a partnership with Penguin Books and can access titles normally worth $18-$25 and deliver them to homes every month for $6.50. The books are available from birth to five years. Ms Angelino said the community had embraced the program which would have long-term literacy benefits for the area. “To get to 10,000 books is a significant milestone for the community which has been achieved with the assistance of our major partner Portland Aluminium; PA took a chance on us and believed in the benefits of the program. Other supporters include the Andrew Jack Charitable Trust, Rotary Club of Portland, Portland Bay and Casterton, Portland North Primary School, Heywood and District Secondary College, Brian & Jan Linker Leather, Portland

Girl Guides, Kathleen Milliken Centre and individuals who are supporting the DPIL through the Workplace Giving Program,” she said. Peter Chellis, Portland Aluminium plant manager, the major sponsor of the program, said both personally and professionally he has a passion for seeing educational opportunities provided to the younger generation. “Portland Aluminium has been instrumental in partnering with community groups to develop and deliver programs to children and students aged from birth to 17 in the Glenelg Shire to enhance their learning abilities,” he said. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is one partnership he and his team at the smelter are very proud of and very passionate about, however, it is one that he worries about in terms of its sustainability. “The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is fundamental to the future of our youngest generation, the statistics don’t lie. However, this program needs to be embraced by the community in order for it to be sustainable. I urge every corporation, every business, every organisation and every individual to become a sponsor to this program so it can continue well into the future.” The program is targeted at vulnerable families but is open to everyone. Ms Angelino said there was overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents and children about the program. “It’s very heartening to hear how children look forward to receiving their monthly book and the enjoyment and benefits they receive,” she said. “The Dolly Parton Imagination Library works to improve early literacy by empowering parents and ensuring the entire community works together to support and encourage our youngest residents to foster a lifetime love of learning.” Businesses, clubs and community members can contact Ms Angelino on 0410 513 305, email mail@ unitedwayglenelg.com. au or go to our website unitedwayglenelg.com.au to donate.

Entries needed now for popular rural water grant program Community organisations have just three remaining weeks to apply for cash grants as part of an initiative set up to say ‘thank you’ to rural and regional Australia. The Philmac Project provides individual grants of up to $5000 to local organisations wanting to carry out water-related projects that benefit rural and regional communities. Applicants have until October 2 to answer just a few basic questions as part of a stream-lined online application process designed to make entering as easy as possible. They then have until mid October to muster up some votes for their proposed project. The popular funding scheme was set up three years ago by Philmac - a global leader in the design and manufacture of specialist fittings and valves for transferring, controlling and applying water. “It’s our way of giving something back to the people that have stood by us, despite challenging times,” said Philmac Managing Director, Mark Nykiel. “Since then money and in-kind support from the Philmac Project has benefited 38 different community organisations across Australia, including schools, sports clubs, show societies and environmental groups,” Mr Nykiel said. “In some cases, just a modest amount of money has made a huge difference to them being able to make a start on a project they have been thinking about for years. “And they don’t need to go through a complex process to get it. The application steps are simple and there is very limited paperwork involved when you receive a grant.” A total of $25,000 in cash grants and $10,000 worth of Philmac products is being offered, with organisations able to apply for up to $5000 in cash. Submissions must be made online via www.philmacproject.com.au before 5pm (South Australian time) on Friday, October 2. The submissions will then be posted on the website so that people can show support by voting online. Voting closes at 5pm (South Australian time) on Friday, October 16. The five projects in each Philmac Project region that attract the most votes will be short-listed for final judging by an expert panel, with recipients announced in late October. Judges will also award discretionary product grants valued at up to $5000, to entries that offer a high level of community value but have not attracted significant votes. Every community group that applies is automatically in the running for these grants, known as the Bluey Awards. “Ultimately, we are looking for projects that will make a genuine difference to their local community, and have the potential to reduce water use, improve water quality or benefit the environment in some way,” Mr Nykiel said. For more information and to make a submission visit www.philmacproject.com.au

LOCAL Coastal church opens windows into community life

New stained glass windows at Port MacDonnell’s historic Uniting Church will be commissioned during a special service of dedication this Sunday. The three windows, which are located at the front of the 148-year-old building, depict the major industries operating within the close-knit coastal community south of Mount Gambier. While grazing cattle feature prominently in one of the panels, there is also a distinct nautical theme to the designs, with a fishing boat, a lighthouse and an anchor all paying homage to the local lobster industry. Congregation member, the Reverend Dr Murray Earl, says the windows also reflect deeper, spiritual messages.

“The Christian view is that Jesus anchors us in life during rough seas, and also that we look after one another,” he explains. “God is a worker, and is interested in our work and in ordinary local people, so what these stained glass windows are saying is that what happens in Port MacDonnell is important. We want to say thanks to God for our work and for the fact that we can work.” Rev. Earl grew up at Mount Schank and spent 25 years travelling the globe as an RAAF chaplain. While working in Denmark, he came across the concept of churches reflecting local working lives within stained glass, and he brought the idea back to Port MacDonnell when he moved home two years ago. The new windows have been created by Casterton leadlight artist Belinda McKinnon, and were funded by the church’s small but highly dedicated congregation. Congregation member, Les Walters, says the end result is attracting a lot of attention. “We see people parked out the front looking at them, and have heard of people specifically driving down here to see them…everyone’s happy with how they have turned out,” he said. The service of dedication and commissioning will be held at 10am on Sunday at the Port MacDonnell Uniting Church, Bookey Street, Port MacDonnell. A morning tea will follow the service. All are welcome.

LOCAL Students earn top vocational awards Former Year 12 students Jessica Feast, Erin Hudson and Gemma Golebiowski have been announced as South Australian recipients of the 2014 Australian Vocational Student Prize.“The Australian Vocational Student Prize (AVSP) recognises the achievements of students who completed their senior secondary studies while undertaking a vocational education and training while at school or an Australian School Based Apprenticeship. These awards promote the benefits of vocational education and reflect the commitments of schools in ensuring students not only have the skills for enhanced employment opportunities, but also have the skills our employers need which are central to Australia’s economic growth,” Assistant Minister for Education the Hon Simon Birmingham MP said in his letter to schools. Nationally there were approximately 500 winners, with 73 of them being

from South Australia. Jessica (below right) chose to undertake a Certificate II in Agriculture as a school based traineeship with the Majuro Pastoral Co, as she was already involved in family farm work and thought this would be helpful in building on her understanding of how farms run, learning the importance of WHS laws and developing knowledge and skills of farm machinery and equipment. Jessica’s employer highlighted that after developing an understanding of communication in the workplace and work health safety requirements, Jessica was able to effectively put her knowledge into practice, fixing potential hazards before they arose and communicating with a range of staff on the far. Erin (pictured above) chose to continue her beauty studies and undertake a Certificate III in Beauty Services as she was keen to enter the beauty profession as a

Helipad transfers already on the increase

vocation, but she also had a goal to successfully complete Year 12 and gain her SACE. “By undertaking the VET course I have been able to gain a detailed understanding of the industry, and a wide variety of employability skills which was crucial in me securing my ultimate career aspiration of becoming a beauty therapist with Vanity,” Erin said. Gemma (pictured far left) chose to undertake a Certificate II in Hairdressing after completing ‘The Look’ course and deciding hairdressing was the career pathway she wanted to pursue. “The course provided me with numerous skills that have helped me move toward employment. Developing skills such as blow drying techniques, thermal styling equipment use, hair treatments and permanent hair colouring have all been extremely beneficial in achieving my goal of gaining a hairdressing apprenticeship with Red Ivie,” Gemma said. Mount Gambier High School vocational pathways coordinator Samantha Brown said, all three students showed that with focus, motivation and diligence, they were able to be highly successful in their vocational and school studies, whilst entering a work environment and the challenges it brings, all of which they took in their stride.

Demand for emergency helicopter transfers out of Portland is hitting record levels. A total of six Portland people were transferred to metropolitan hospitals for life-saving treatment during August, substantially above regular monthly figures. The upswing in activity - including four transfers within a five-day period – is timely as the city’s new helipad moves closer to reality. The six transfers during August is the second highest monthly tally since records started in 2008. December is usually the busiest month for helicopter transfers. The highest monthly number of transfers was seven in November 2011. The increase comes as the new on-site helipad nears completion with an expected official opening later this year. The successful tenderer of the traffic management system for the helipad will commence work shortly. Director of Adult Retrieval Victoria, Associate Professor Marcus Kennedy, said retrievals were an important life-saving service for the Portland community. “Portland is quite isolated when it comes to access to critical care medicine and PDH uses the service regularly,” he said. Dr Kennedy said PDH had been proactive in ensuring patients are well prepared for transfer. “They have been keen to adopt some of the educational practices we promote and keep staff up-to-date by looking at ways to better prepare patients, contacting us early and utilising Telehealth,” he said. “They are very proactive as a referral site.” Dr Kennedy said the new helipad would further assist the safe and timely transfer of patients. “Anything that streamlines the process is important from a patient perspective,” he said. “It will mean faster and more efficient transfers and less patient movements, all of which is associated with better patient outcomes.” Many cases are for cardiac conditions, however the service provides for all patient types including trauma. Portland District Health Emergency Department Nurse Unit Manager Deb Tozer said that when critical patients present to PDH they are able to be expertly treated and stabilised in the emergency department prior to transferring to a more specialised area depending on their illness. “The helicopter has enabled us to know that once stable, these patients can be transferred swiftly and directly to their destination facility,”Ms Tozer said. “This saves on the logistics of road ambulance to the airport, meaning patients are reaching their destination in a more timely and efficient way.”

LOCAL Transitioning your business to the digital market Glenelg Shire Council is supporting local businesses in the transition to a world increasingly dependent on digital resources. Following the success of the workshops provided in Portland in June, Better Business, Better Life director Caylie Price will return to deliver workshops in Heywood and Casterton in September, showing businesses how to not only set up a Facebook page, but also how to use it effectively to produce results. Ms Price is from Heywood and therefore understands the needs of the Glenelg Shire community, with a large list of positive testimonials from past workshop participants. Her workshops, Facebook Marketing for your Business will be delivered at a subsidised rate of $20 per workshop. “Facebook is a fabulous platform for connecting with current and potential customers as well as increasing brand awareness as a direct result of its social nature and ‘trustworthiness’,” she said. “During the workshop you will gain an understanding of how best

to use Facebook for your business, how to start your business page the right way and develop an initial series of attention grabbing status updates to build your audience. “You’ll create your custom Facebook strategy that you can continue to implement long after the workshop is over and you’ll learn about Facebook advertisements and how to invest your money wisely. Workshops: •Monday, September 28 - Heywood Library 5.30pm to 8.30pm •Wednesday 30 September - Casterton Library 5.30pm to 8.30pm Cost: $20 per workshop • Light supper provided. Member for Barker comments on leadership spill “I believe that the Liberal Party is a Party about core, fundamental beliefs, not personalities. I was deeply disappointed at the decision to call a leadership ballot. I believe that the Australian people voted us into Government because they believed the Liberal Party would act with maturity, focus, consistency, teamwork and above all, integrity. I supported Tony Abbott because I believe he is a man of integrity. This belief has been proven in his response to the ballot last (Monday)

evening. As Tony himself said, “Being the Prime Minister is not an end in itself it’s about the people you serve. I have always had a deep respect for Tony Abbott and this remains as he moves to the backbench. I am proud of what the Abbott Government has achieved. I have every confidence that the Coalition Government, under the newly elected Prime Minister will continue delivering the economic and national security that our nation requires. Despite the events of the last 24 hours, I can assure the people of Barker that the Liberal Party, as a team, is focused on delivering good government. I look forward to moving onward in the pursuit of the national interest and remain focused and committed to my role of representing the people of Barker. TONY PASIN • MEMBER FOR BARKER

Improved street appeal for Glenelg Shire destinations Travellers from across the country may soon have Casterton and Portland in their sights, with close to 200 promotional regionspecific number plates expected to hit the roads early in the new year. Glenelg Shire Council has written to VicRoads to confirm the purchase of 100 sets of both ‘Casterton – Kelpie Country’ and ‘Portland – Whale Watching Capital’ Special Interest Number Plates (pictures attached) after an initial expression of interest period. Mayor Robert Halliday said council was confident with the community’s response, which included a number of people detailing that they would definitely purchase the plates if they were available. “In order for the promotion to proceed, VicRoads required an initial purchase of 100 sets of number plates for each design, at a cost of $20,000, or $200 per pair of plates,” he said. “We had strong interest in two of the three designs and wanted to ensure we gave people the choice they wanted. “At the August Council Meeting, a total of $40,000 was approved as part of the 2015/16 budget allocation, which covers the cost of both designs. “It’s expected funds for the purchase of the plates will be partly offset by sales.” VicRoads will now prepare the design and send this off for manufacture into sample number plates. The samples will then be sent for camera testing. An agreement between VicRoads and council will then be formalised and is expected in December 2015. It is expected that both Special Interest Number Plates will be available to sell in January/February 2016.

NETBALL Epic final ends with Tigers advancing to grand final The Western Border Netball Association has never seen a final like it, and coming hot on the heels of the nailbiting 2nd semi final the weekend before, it was hard to believe such drama and tension could be so easily surpassed. But it was. With scores tied up at the final whistle, the match between East Gambier and North Gambier was forced into extra time. That meant seven more minutes each end to decide who would earn the right to challenge reigning premiers Millicent for the 2015 flag this weekend. But even after that extra 14 minutes, there was nothing separating the two sides and without a break, in accordance with netball rules, the match continued, waiting for one team to establish a two goal buffer and the victory. It would be another 19 minutes of the most dramatic and impressive netball before North coach Caroline Davey sunk the winning shot. Fitting, given she sank 55 from 64 throughout the match and, as she was against West in the 1st semi final, was one of the key factors in the victory. The players were out on their feet but pushed on – keeping their eye on the prize, a grand final berth. In reality, East was lucky the match went into overtime and the Tigers knew they could well have let one slip. Leading by seven going into the final quarter and maintaining that buffer for the first part of the quarter, it looked like the East fairytale had come to an end. But the young Bulldogs dug deep and on the back of some stunning defensive work from Eilish and Brenna McKay and some impressive shooting under pressure from Tenille Gray and Sarah Lock, East drew level with seconds so spare. North did have a long range shot to steal victory before full time but the shot rimmed out and so started 33 minutes of tense netball action between two desperate teams. The Bulldogs came out the better of the two and quickly earned the mini break and enjoyed a narrow three goal lead at the first change but again the Tigers fought back and the match lurched into the two goal advantage rule. Morgan Amy loomed as the unlikely hero on the defensive wing, twice securing interceptions in the toughest part of the court – on the circle’s edge – but each time North’s defenders Kaitlin Smith, Alannah Campbell and Melissa Renko held the young Bulldogs at Bay. The twists in the tale continued as North then earned the critical mini break but some fatigue-affected decisions saw them too allow East to pull back the deficit. In the end, it was the ground ball skills of Smith that earned a critical turnover – Davey scoring that goal and then converting the subsequent centre pass to end the match. It was sheer devastation to the young Bulldogs, who many believed was the

side most likely to really challenge the Saints.

NETBALL Denton wins incredible ninth best & fairest There are no superlatives left as Millicent star Donna Denton claimed a ninth Western Border Netball Association A Grade best & fairest at the weekend’s medal count. She again held off her coach and long tme premiership team mate Lisa Duldig. It is Denton’s fourth consecutive title, with her first coming as a teenager in 1994. Ominously, Denton’s daughter Lucy took out the 13 & Under B best & fairest in what could well be a sign of things to come. Denton (below) polled in 12

games and was adjudged best on court on seven occasions. Denton’s ability to win possession and to finsh accurately has not waned and she has plated her usual role for the Saints in their 2015 premiership campaign - starting under the post in goal shooter and using her timing and strong holding to great effect, or moving out to goal attack when the team needed some extra drive through the mid court. Basically it is a huge compliment to opposition teams if you can force the star goaler out to goal attack. The 2015 Team of the Year, which is selected by the A Grade coaches, saw a wonderful belnd of experience and rising talent with Denton, Tenille Gray and Lisa McGregor securing the shooting positions; Ash Kalantarian, Carly Trevilyan and Tarsh McCallum selected in the mid court, alongside the team’s coach, Lisa Duldig; and Melissa Renko, Brenna McKay and Hayley Dunn as the defenders. McKay (below right) was adjudged the best Under 21 Player, with Gray (below left) winning the Most Consistent Award, polling in 16 of 17 of her 17 & Under matches. FOOTBALL Mt Burr topples Demons

Appearing in A Grade finals for the first time in many years, the Bulldogs looked right at home in the 2nd semi final and seemed destined for a grand final berth, but the Tigers are tenacious and fought to keep their injury ravaged season, that was also plagued by player unavailability, on track with a second successive grand final appearance. Both teams would be leg weary this week after their titanic struggle and it could be argued the Tigers only had themselves to blame. They really did control the contest from the opening whistle, with yet another victory built on the relentless defensive pressure of Campbell, Smith and Renko, the hard running and smart delivery of Ash Kalantarian and the accurate finishing of Davey. The game genuinely looked gone for East until a couple of unforced Tiger errors saw them start to bridge the gap and all of sudden the young Bulldogs came to life to force the match into overtime. Renewed intensity in defence and better patience and positioning in attack suddenly saw East back in the contest, mainly courtesy of the McKay sisters defensive efforts and the hard running of Rachael Hines and Tarsh McCallum. All players showed incredible composure in the contest, with the likes of Emily Pietsch, in her debut season of A Grade, not flinching in the game’s big moments. Gray and Lock showed nerves of steel in the shooting circle and it was easy to forget that Gray is just a 15 year old yet was such a prominent figure in the epic final. So was fellow teenager Brenna McKay, who rose to the occasion to consistently create turnovers to give her side a chance at victory. The hard running of Abbey Duncan was also a feature as she worked her front cuts to open up space for Davey, sometimes taking more than half a dozen passes from one side of the circle to the other just to earn a quality shot. Every player was to be commended on their commitment to the task at hand and the way they showcased Western Border netball like never before. There is pressure on Millicent and North now, after two stunning A grade finals leading into the title decider, to again showcase the sport and the association.

In the end, it was all about the basics and Mt Burr just did them better. Vanquished Port MacDonnell coach Leigh Capewell lamenting his players seemed flat on the day when it mattered most. “They (Mt Burr) were first to the ball and they used the ball a lot better,” Capewell said. “They didn’t let us play well.” While it is safe to say that Mt Burr outclassed the Demons in every aspect of the game, and also outworked, the scoreboard never reflected that dominance and even in the last quarter, when Port MacDonnell kicked an early goal, the match could have gone either way. Mt Burr was relentless in its defensive pressure all day and never gave the Demons time or space to use their skills. The Mossies did not allow the Demons to gain any momentum and the Bay boys were never able to string two goals together in the second half and make a genuine comeback. Stan Jones Medallist Josh Wallis was honoured for his shut down on the dangerous Dylan Bromley. The star Demons forward loomed as one of the potential match winners for Port MacDonnell but Wallis had other ideas and played the perfect defenders role, denying Bromley easy possession and keeping the key forward to only three goals. Dylan Ridding capped off a stellar finals series with another superb performance, with Tom Renzi and Clint Gallio also influencing the contest and also keeping tabs on the Bays prime movers. That being said, Will MacDonald was still one of the better performed Demons, with Mark Smith just pipping the Mail Medallist for best on ground honours for the runners-up. The 2015 A Grade flag was the first for the Mossies since their stunning three-peat from 2009-2011 and is their 17th overall. The B Grade premiership went to Port MacDonnell, with Tantanoola taking out the senior colts and Hatherleigh, the junior colts. lifestyle1.net | 35 edit - sport.indd 3

Local Sport FOOTBALL O’Neil scoops awards pool at Western Border football medal count He has been around the mark for that past few seasons and has the past two South Gambier Football Club A Grade best & fairest to his name and finally Brett O’Neil has added the Brian Hennessy Medal to his trophy cabinet. No doubt, despite being extremely proud and honoured to be named the Western Border Football League’s best and fairest player for season 2015, O’Neil (pictured left) has his eye on the ultimate prize for any footballer – a premiership medal. The Demons have suffered disappointing exits in the past two seasons and have at least ensured a shot at the flag by advancing straight to the grand final after defeating the reigning premiers in the second semi final. O’Neil is all class and still manages to put in prolific ball winning and effective performances each week in a midfield rife with bonafide A graders, including fellow league medallist Simon Berkefeld. Perhaps the new look mullet for season 2015 has made his performances more eye catching than usual. O’Neil not only wins his own ball but uses it well, in the congestion and when he finds time and space and is one of those valuable commodities – a goal kicking midfielder. A model of consistency, O’Neil’s first of six best

on ground performances came in the ANZAC Day clash, despite South being on the wrong side of the scoreboard. The other best afield votes came in round seven (Casterton Sandford); round nine against East; round 11 against Millicent; round 12 against the Cats; and round 17 against the Saints. After round 10, O’Neil held a narrow one vote lead over West Gambier star Tom Holmes but with three more best on ground performances to come, O’Neil comfortably claimed the Brian Hennessy Medal with a seven vote margin over Holmes, with Nick Blachut (North Gambier) and Mark Kieselbach tying for third and Tiger team mates Brock Egan and Brad Stafford tying in fourth. Polling in 10 of 17 games for the season, O’Neil, who also took home the two top media awards from 5SE and The Border Watch, only confirming her has been the standout player of the 2015 season, in everyone’s eyes. You suspect, if there were player association and coach association awards, comparable to the AFL, O’Neil would have featured prominently in that voting as well. Other key accolades from Sunday’s medal count, included yet another leading goalkicker award to Justin McConnell, who again hit the 100 goal mark in 2015, with

East’s Todd Lockwood taking home the highly valued Farmer Phil Scanlon Rookie of the Year Award, with Millicent’s Tom Hutchesson adjudged the 5SE Best Team Man. The Best Under 21 Player Award went to the hard working Tiger Nick McInerney.

More details on the football finals & medal count our sports section, as well as on our facebook page.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Who needs a television anyway... by Robbie Tansel Apparently my threenager son Shaquille has finally pushed his mother Donna too far. I know this as she has brought in strict new rules that have fundamentally changed his life. It started about a week ago when she decided that he was having too many treats and too much sugar in his diet. Now considering that his diet is about ninety five percent sugar, this was going to bring about pretty dramatic changes to his day to day existence. This apparently did not bring about the results that she was hoping for though, as a few mornings ago he awoke to the

news that watching television is no longer part of his daily activities. To put this into its proper perspective, Shaquille would watch approximately seventy hours of television each day. Television is his best friend and I’m sure one of the primary reasons he gets out of bed each morning. He loves watching a variety of children’s shows but the thing he loves most is demanding a variety of DVDs for his viewing pleasure. Now when you’ve got a child who is already on a sugar low, chances are you’re dealing with a pretty volatile individual. Don’t worry about your ice forums. Let’s get a

bunch of parents together who’ve tried to ween Precious off sugar and talk about that. Anyway, what I have discovered from observing Shaquille since the beginning of the TV embargo of 2015 is that there is so much more to life than watching television. There are countless things that you can do in your house without watching television. You could even explore the stages of grief. Anger. To begin with, you’d be surprised how much time you can use telling people you hate them and that they’re not your friend anymore. From what I observed, you can literally spend hours doing this

S.E. BATTERY SERVICE

+

rewarding task. It’s amusing how when you’re three years old you can think that “You’re not my friend anymore” is one of the worst things you could possibly say to anyone. Then a couple of years later you go to school, learn how to swear and expand your range of negative comments exponentially. Bargaining. Having realised that hurtful comments don’t seem to have somehow provided the power necessary to make the television turn itself on, a person will decide that they need to find alternate ways to entertain themselves like trying to find the utensil which Mum or Dad often magically turn the idiot box on with. In Shaquille’s case this involved several hours of seeking out where his mother had hidden the remotes. It was a lot like a game of hide and seek except with much more desperation, panic and tears. More anger. The television is still not on. Dad did say something about kicking something being something I could do to fill some time. I said a football. He obviously didn’t hear me or got confused because

he spent some time kicking…furniture, toys, the wall, the cat. Surely she was part of this no TV conspiracy all along. She’s annoyed that Fat Cat is no longer on. What a great time filler. Denial. Or maybe acceptance. Sit on the couch, where you always sit while you’re watching the tele, and stare at it, despite the fact it isn’t on. Let’s be honest, this is no worse than watching an episode of the Bachelor. In fact I’m pretty sure it’s more entertaining. Another hour or two gone. Depression. Mope. Dragging yourself around the house making it clear that you really have no reason to live anymore is a great way to fill your time. Make it clear that you’re three and you don’t want to live if this is the world you’re going to be living in. Acceptance. Shaquille seemed to come to terms with the fact he would be no longer watching television after a few days. Instead of constantly demanding the television be turned on, he would just gather a couple of his favourite DVDs and sit on the couch looking at the cases of the movies he used to watch. Life would just have to move on. Did that image nearly bring tears to your eyes? It’s just a naughty little boy who watches too much TV. Now that we’ve gotten Shaquille through it, someone’s going to need to email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com to give me the name of a good couple’s counsellor who can help me to figure out why Donna hates me so much that she has taken my television away from me.
