Business SA re-launched office cements long term committment to the South East The South Australian economy is currently facing significant challenges. The success and productivity of some of our biggest regions, like Mount Gambier and the South East, will be vital to ensuring that South Australia’s economy can grow and thrive to create sustainable jobs now and for the next generation. As the State’s peak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Business SA remains committed to Mount Gambier and to supporting the region’s diverse business community. Our new office at 20 Penola Road, Mount Gambier now offers a re-launched apprentice/trainee service, Apprenticeship Support Australia (ASA) and a Business Adviser specialising in working with business in the Food & Agribusiness and Advanced Manufacturing sectors. These initiatives are supported by funding from the Australian Government under its Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) and Entrepreneurs’ Programmes. We are very excited about combining our local Mount Gambier knowledge with a new national network of ASA offices to ensure that businesses and apprentices/trainees receive the best advice and support. Our Mount Gambier staff work and live in the community, so we know the issues that matter to business here. With our national alliance through the Chamber movement we are able to deliver tailored advice and support to employers and potential trainees/ apprentices alike. It is our local knowledge, combined with our commitment to the South East and our experience that makes ASA the natural partner for business in Mount Gambier. As
Phone
a member-based, not for profit, Business SA has always backed South Australian businesses and we have been providing local expertise and support in Mount Gambier for over 100 years. Since 1999, Business SA has successfully partnered with more than 11,000 businesses across South Australia and signed up more than 100,000 apprentices and trainees. The ASA support will be led by Leanne Cameron, who has had over 12 years experience in the Vocational Education sector. It is Leanne’s experience combined with her local knowledge that makes her the right team leader for employers in the region. Our new Business Adviser, Mark Peters, is part of the Federal Government’s Entrepreneurs Programme. He can offer local businesses free business evaluations. These evaluations are the first step to ensure that these businesses get the advice and support they
need to improve their competitiveness and productivity. Mark is locally based and he is also connected to network of about a hundred experienced private sector advisers and facilitators located across Australia. Through the Entrepreneurs Programme, businesses in the Mount can get access to practical support such as advice from people with relevant private sector experience, access co-funded grants to commercialise
new products and with opportunities to connect and collaborate. For more than 175 years Business SA has existed for one reason: to support South Australian businesses both large and small and our Mount Gambier office is a vital part of that commitment. The Business SA (South East) team

Coonawarra’s Raidis Estate powering up innovative visitors
LOCAL Koonara the toast of Coonawarra
Leading the charge to support innovation, Raidis Estate has recently installed South Australia’s first Tesla recharge station at their Coonawarra cellar door, enabling owners of the electric cars to visit the Limestone Coast wine region with ease for the first time. The idea was sparked by Melbournebased Tesla owner, Keith Wein, who visited Emma and Steven Raidis at their cellar door while waiting 24 hours for his battery operated vehicle to recharge. Raidis Estate managing director, Steven Raidis said Teslas will charge via a typical household power supply but waiting a full day and night isn’t a practical option for anyone with a limited time frame. “We jumped at the idea to install the 22kW electric vehicle supply, to welcome visitors to Coonawarra but also to support sustainable technologies,” Steven said. “Now the Tesla will fully charge in just three hours.” With a range of more than 400 kilometres, Teslas are the world’s first long distance electric car; however the 800 kilometres from Melbourne to Coonawarra to Adelaide without a charger in sight meant the region wasn’t an option - until now. Keith Wein recently returned to trial the new device, and was full of praise for the Raidis’ initiative. “I’m delighted; now I can enjoy a tasting and lunch in Penola and be on my way again. The best part is I didn’t even ask Steven and Emma to install it - it was entirely their initiative,” he said. Tesla doesn’t release sales data, however government figures place more than 170 Teslas on the road in New South Wales and Victoria in March 2015 - a 150% increase in the three months from December 2014. Increases in the number of recharge outlets can only help the significant market growth Tesla have experienced since launching in December of 2014.
Koonara was recently announced as Coonawarra’s Winery Of The Year for 2015 at the Melbourne International Wine Competition. Koonara was in great company with other regional winners includin; Bird in Hand, in the Adelaide Hills; Dandelion Vineyards, in the Eden Valley; Soul Growers, in the Barossa; Taylors Wines, in Clare Valley; and Aramis Vineyards, in McLaren Vale. “We are thrilled with the announcement,” said Dru Reschke, Koonara’s owner and vigneron. “With the incredible quality coming out of all the wineries in Coonawarra at the moment, it could have just as easily gone to any of them, so it’s
a humbling award.” The Melbourne International Wine Competition is one of the only international wine competitions with trade judges. The judges are comprised of buyers from top retail stores, sommeliers, restaurant owners, hotel beverage directors, distributors and importers. Judges included Kate Lawton who is Senior Buyer at Vinomofo; Peter Nixon, Dan Murphy’s Natural Fine Wine Manager and Christian Maier, Sommelier and Buyer for RACV Clubs and Resorts. Koonara’s Family Reserve Ambriel’s Gift, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon also received a Gold medal in the competition. Ambriel’s Gift 2012, boasts other awards including 94 points by James Halliday, and 94 points from Wine Showcase Magazine. Koonara also took home a Bronze for The Desolate Soil Pinot, 2012. The recent announcement comes on the back of a Five Star Winer’ rating by James Halliday. “People who come to Coonawarra are very lucky, most Coonawarra wineries have a Halliday five star rating. It means visitors can feel confident they are tasting wines of the highest quality,” said Mr Reschke.Typically a winery must have at least two wines rated 95 points or above, and this year just 7.2% of the 2800 wineries that were in the running were awarded a Five Star Winery by James Halliday.
Above - Dru Reschke, owner of Koonara wines, was thrilled to be named the Coonawarra Winery of the Year, by the Melbourne International Wine Competition.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Proverbs for the modern world... by Robbie Tansel I’ve been thinking lately that the proverbs we’ve always had just aren’t that relevant anymore. The world has changed but we’re still trotting out the same proverbs that we’ve had since Bible times. What do they even mean anymore? For instance, who was Larry and why was he so happy anyway? Surely he wasn’t happy all the time. Was it more that when he was happy he was just happy to the extreme? I Googled this one and the best theory I could find was that it referred to an Australian boxer called Larry Foley from back in the late 1800s. Apparently he won £1000 in his last fight. Was that what made
him happy, or was he just a bit muddled from the amount of blows he’d taken to his head? Mind you not all proverbs have lost their relevance. The Bible is thousands of years old and has a whole book devoted to and even called Proverbs. It contains this pearl of wisdom: “Better to live on the corner of a roof than to share a house with a nagging wife.” That’s timeless, I would have thought. Anyway, here are some new proverbs that you might want to throw into your day to day conversations. “Never trust a person who uses more than two emojis in a text message.” I think it’s fair to say we all know people who are getting a little carried away with their use of little pictures in their messages. To me a person who overuses emojis when they send you a message is kind of the equivalent of people who used to always put air quotes in the air when they were talking. They’re not particularly skilled at using their words so now they’re resorting to using pictures. I spend
all my time at the moment telling Shaquille to use his words when he wants something rather than grunting and pointing. Maybe I should just get him a phone and teach him to use the emojis. I’m pretty sure that overusing emojis is actually an early sign of mental illness anyway. It’s not natural. Here’s another new proverb that will impress your friends. “As useful as a person crossing the road listening to music on their iPhone.” As with all “as useful as…” proverbs, the idea is that the thing is not at all useful. For example, “As useful as a screen door on a submarine.” Obviously that is not a useful thing, except when you’re docked and you want a bit of fresh air because the submarine is a big stuffy after several months at sea with dozens of seamen sweating away and you don’t want flies to get in. You just giggled at seamen, didn’t you? Anyway, crossing the road with your headphones on listening to music is silly and dangerous. Call me old fashioned but my caveman instincts are still in full effect. I’m constantly on alert for the possibility of being attacked by a dinosaur. I need full use of my senses at all times. I like to know what’s happening around me. I love listening to music, but I’m not going to put myself at risk of death for it. You never know when a lion might have escaped from a circus.Continuing the theme of proverbs that are actually sarcastic in their meaning, I’ve come up with “As routine as a breast augmentation.” I came up with this one this morning after hearing about a young lady
who had terrible complications after going to hospital for a “routine breast augmentation”. Just to be clear, there is nothing routine about having your perfectly fine breasts cut open so that little bags of silicon can be inserted to make them bigger. There is nothing routine about choosing to have your body cut open. By the way ladies, we men do like big ones. But we also like little ones, pointy ones, round ones and whatever other ones we can get a look at. We’re really not that fussy. You don’t need to do that to yourselves. It’s easier to just find a nice guy who’ll appreciate you as you are. “As sincere as a guy saying politically correct things to impress young ladies.” That could be another sarcastic one too. If you don’t want to use my new proverbs, maybe we can just update them. “The best thing since sliced bread” is a classic example. I’m sure at the time, the fact you didn’t have to spend seven seconds slicing off a piece of your bread was pretty exciting. But it’s not 1928 anymore. Just for interest sake, the United States government banned sliced bread in 1943. Do some research and look into that one yourelf. I wish our government would do something fun like that. Surely there has been something more exciting created since 1928. The best thing since Beanie Kids maybe? I’ll keep working on that one. If you get a chance to use one, make sure you send me an email at robbietansel@gmail.com to let me know how it goes.

TAKE TIME OUT TO READ In the Unlikely Event JUDY BLUME “She held the baby close, feeling the warmth of his little body, kissing his soft cheek. He looked right into her eyes. Outside the window, the wing broke away from the plane. Then they were falling . . . falling diagonally out of the sky.” When three planes crashed in Elizabeth, New Jersey within the space of three months in the early 1950s, Newark airport was closed for a year. Each of these disasters was devastating not only for those on board, but also for the close-knit community of people on the ground. In Elizabeth, the plane crashes open up new wounds and mysteries - they bring some families together and tear others apart. But somehow, life continues - and amid grief and loss, hope and love survive. Inspired by real events, Judy Blume uses her imagination to interweave the stories of three generations of families, friends and strangers whose lives are forever changed in the aftermath. In The Unlikely Event is a captivating, deeply moving and unforgettable novel, written with the same warmth and authenticity that have won the hearts and minds of readers the world over for decades. Judy Blume is the author of many now classic books for children and young adults, including Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Tiger Eyes and Forever. More than 85 million copies of her books have been sold, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages.
LOCAL High school musical boasts completely local flavour
Rehearsals are well and truly underway for the musical extravaganza that is FUTUREPUNK. Students have been giving up much of their spare time to ensure that this will be a show that is not to be missed. The cast have been hard at work with teachers and show creators Mike Bakker and Scott Maxwell and dance teacher Laura Mancuso. This is a completely original show with a multi-dimensional script written by Mike Bakker, an unforgettable
rock score from the amazing Scott Maxwell and stylish choreography from the talented Laura Mancuso. FUTUREPUNK is a sometimes moving, often hilarious, high – energy musical for all ages about discovering that some things in life are worth fighting for. Tickets are on sale now. Performance dates & times Thursday, September 24 10am & 7.30pm Friday, September 25 10am & 7.30pm
FUTUREPUNK synposis Sometime in the future in a place called The City, there is a generation of young people, school aged children, who have not heard music. It is forbidden in any form. The ban on music, once the thoughtless act of the economic rationalist Committee attempting to improve the city’s productivity has now, over time, become embedded in mythology and law…..and nobody really understands why. The city’s leaders, irrational and
incompetent, continue to enforce the ban with a blind faith akin to religious zealotry. The only sounds permitted are those that “emulate the beautiful rhythms of industry”. Influenced by the spirits of music, who are on a quest to ‘save’ their sister, three brave young children challenge the law and The Committee and attempt to bring the music, and the sister, back.
Below (far left) Rehearsals are in full swing at Grant High School. Below (left) - Show creators Mike Bakker and Scott Maxwell. Above (fom left) - FUTUREPUNK rehearsals; Scott Maxwell with the band and Rosie Pike going through her moves with the chorus in the background.

TRUCK PULL CHALLENGE RETURNS
Lemon coconut slice 100g butter, softened 1/2 cup (100g) caster sugar 1 egg 3/4 cup (115g) plain flour 1/4 cup (20g) desiccated coconut Lemon curd 50g butter, chopped 1/2 cup (100g) caster sugar
1 egg, whisked 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon rind 1/4 cup (60ml) lemon juice Coconut topping 2 eggs 1/2 cup (100g) caster sugar 2 cups (130g) shredded coconut 1 cup (85g) desiccated coconut
Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line the base and sides of a 19 x 29cm slice pan with baking paper, allowing the long sides to overhang.Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar until combined. Add the egg and beat until just combined. Add the flour and coconut and stir with a wooden spoon until combined. Spoon mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the surface with the back of a spoon. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes or until golden.Meanwhile, to make the lemon curd, combine the butter, sugar, egg, lemon rind and juice in a
small saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly. Spread the lemon curd evenly over the prepared base. To make the coconut topping, use a fork to whisk the eggs and sugar in a medium bowl. Add the shredded and desiccated coconut and stir until well combined. Sprinkle evenly over the lemon curd. Bake in oven for 20-25 minutes or until the coconut is lightly golden and set. Set aside in pan to cool completely. Cut into squares to serve.
The Fennell Forestry Truck Pull Challenge is on again, with an unprecendented number of entries ensuring the event will be bigger and better than ever in 2015. The unique charity fundraising event was held for the first time in 2013, drawing overwhelming support from local businesses, media and members of the community. Since then, more than $20,000 has been raised for children’s charities Variety and Make-A-Wish. Now in its third year, the event is gaining national noteriety, with Australian timber, truck and transport industry leaders keen to harness up and give the event a go for themselves. A long list of local event sponsors are also signed up and ready to take part and help raise money for Variety. This includes the Barry Maney Group and Trident Tyre Centre, who are returning as major sponsors for the third year running. Fennell Forestry managing director and event organiser Wendy Fennell said the event would once again feature teams of six, a 100m course and a 22.5 tonne Kenworth B-Double. Each of six team members will be harnessed and attached to ropes anchored to the truck’s front grill. It will be brute strength alone that pulls the truck and the unloaded Thinwall chip trailer along the course and over the finish line. As the captain of last year’s winning team, Ms Fennell’s advice to would-be challengers was straightforward. “Your legs will be burning and you will want to give up long before the truck rolls over the finish line,” she said. “But it’s about camaraderie, community, good old fashioned fun and doing our bit for Variety. You’ve just got to keep putting one foot in front of the other.” To find out more or make a donation, visit the offical event Facebook page www.facebook.com FennellForestryTruckPull or call Scott O’Dea (pictured above) on 0409 239 755,

LOCAL Monaros set to converge on Mount Gambier This year, Mount Gambier will play host to the much anticipated Monaros Out West event over the weekend of Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 1. Coinciding with the Melbourne Cup metropolitan holiday in Victoria, Monaros Out West is set to attract a large crowd of Holden Monaro enthusiasts and interested spectators, from many parts of Victoria and South Australia, to view a display of the legendary Australian muscle car in its various models. The event is the brainchild of four Hamilton based members of the Monaro Club of Victoria, who, in early 2007, decided to organise an event to entice fellow club members out of the suburbs of Melbourne. Club member Jason McCallum said they were thrilled when around 40 Holden Monaros from Melbourne, Echuca, Kaniva, Ararat, Mount Gambier, and surrounding areas, arrived in Hamilton for the event later that year.
Monaros were displayed in the front showroom and new car display area of the local Holden dealer on Saturday, and the gods appeared to smile on the event as five inches of rain fell over the weekend, creating spectacular flows at Wannon and Nigretta Falls for the visitors to enjoy. Over a hearty breakfast, before farewelling the visitors on Sunday, the event was deemed a huge success by all. Consequently, it was agreed to repeat the event ‘out west’ biennially. In 2009 the event was again held in Hamilton, but was taken to the Grampians in 2011. Port Fairy played host in 2013. Each occasion, the Friday night became a catch-up at one of the local hotels, where early arrivals enjoyed a meal together, with other entrants arriving Saturday morning in time to place their treasured Monaros on display at the local Holden dealer. The weekend program also allowed time for visiting special places of interest in the host region and a dinner on Saturday night. This year, in Mount Gambier, proceedings are set to follow suit. There are some conditions by which entrants need to abide. Entrants are required to attend in a Monaro (early or late model ), and according to organiser Jason McCallum they must be able to enjoy the company of others, and have fun. “If entrants expect a trophy, they must bring their own,” McCallum said, in jest. Further information on Monaros Out West can be obtained by phoning John on 0418 528 350, Robyn on 0408 711 113, or Dianne on 0437 298 061

Burial Rites HANNAH KENT In northern Iceland, 1829, Agnes Magnusdottir is condemned to death for her part in the brutal murder of two men. Agnes is sent to wait on the farm of District Officer Jon Jonsson and his family, who are horrified and avoid Agnes. Only Toti, the young assistant reverend appointed as Agnes’s spiritual guardian, is compelled to try to understand her. As the summer months fall away to winter, Agnes’s story begins to emerge. And as the days to her execution draw closer, the question burns: did she or didn’t she?

LOCAL Art highlights migratory birds epic journey Natural Resources South East will launch the Flyway Print Exchange at the Riddoch Art Gallery in Mount Gambier this Friday with Melbourne artist Kate Gorringe-Smith. The launch and exhibition is to raise awareness of Australia’s migratory shorebirds and their close ties to the Limestone Coast. The environmental art project features 20 artists from nine countries, linked by the journey of eight million birds. Australia is one of 23 countries linked by the East Asian-Australasian ‘Flyway’, an annual migratory route used by migratory shorebirds that return every spring to Australia’s coast and then head north to breed in autumn above the Arctic Circle in Siberia and Alaska. The shorebirds are drawn to the east coast of South Australia and the west coast of Victoria by the Bonney Upwelling. This is a natural phenomenon occurring from November to May, when cold nutrient-rich water ‘wells up’ from the deep seafloor onto the Continental Shelf where sunlight converts the nutrients into food for a huge variety of marine animals and plants. Kate GorringeSmith, a former editor for BirdLife Australia, has been making artistic works for more than five years inspired by the Bar-tailed Godwit, a migratory shorebird that can fly a distance equivalent to that from the earth to the moon during its lifetime. “Science can give you the facts, but it is art that weaves the story. Where the birds go, how many there are, their challenges and successes; these can be highlighted through art and help people make a connection,” she said. Through her work Kate hopes to raise awareness about these amazing birds, their epic journeys, and Australia’s shared
responsibility, as a critical part of the Flyway, in making sure the birds keep flying. Each artist has produced an edition of original prints in response to the Flyway. One copy of each print was then posted, unprotected from New Zealand to Siberia and back to follow the birds’ migratory route. Local artists from Victoria and South Australia were also invited to contribute to the Mount Gambier exhibition which will then travel to Portland, where the exhibition launch will be part of the annual Portland Upwelling Festival. The Mount Gambier exhibition will run from 6pm this Friday, until 6pm Sunday, October 25, at the Riddoch Art Gallery. The exhibition has been made possible through collaboration between Friends of Shorebirds SE, Country Arts SA and the Limestone Coastwatchers project which is supported by SELGA and Natural Resources South East through funding from the Australian Government.

The City of Mount Gambier is delighted to be hosting permaculture and garden design expert, Steve Burns, as part of the Mount Gambier Edible City project. Over the weekend of September 18-20, Steve will be presenting six workshops, covering a wide range of gardening topics. These will be sure to cater to beginners and experienced gardeners alike. Following on from the success of the Mount Gambier Edible City “Get Growing” event held at the Mount Gambier Farmers Market, the upcoming weekend of workshops run by Steve Burns will inspire the community to get involved in growing their own vegetables. The Mount Gambier Edible City project aims to promote the development of Mount Gambier’s local food culture – encouraging residents to grow their own food, whilst supporting existing local food producers to connect with and educate the community. Having completed a number of international and local permaculture design courses, Steve has become a permaculture trainer himself. He founded the
Ballarat Permaculture Guild in 2008, where he assists in developing permaculture training courses and manages a local farmers market- the Smart Living Market. The workshops will be both informative and interactive, allowing participants to learn and develop their skills. The weekend will begin on Friday night with a virtual tour of exquisite French gardens. Saturday brings an introduction to herbs, building a wicking box and ending with a community dinner at the unopened Railway Lands. As part of the Melaleuca Reserve Community Day, Steve will be presenting on perennial plants as well as easy and cheap vegetables to grow. Throughout the weekend there will be many opportunities for conversations to occur amongst gardeners and those keen to discover how to create their own food habitats at home and learn from the wisdom of others. For more information on each workshop please visit haveyoursaymountgambier.com.au/ mount-gambier-edible-city
AT THE GALLERY New Glass • HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON • Until October 4 The gallery holds an extensive collection of glass and continues to develop this part of the collection. In the past few years groups of glass from Japan, Czechoslovakia, England and Australia have entered the collection. Some of these – such as the studio glass from Japan and Australia – are of recent origin whereas that from England was made anonymously in the 18th and 19th centuries. The pieces from Czechoslovakia (the old Bohemian Glass) are from the 1960s and 1970s when the country was under communist rule and little glass was exported to the West. At last we have been able to represent the 20th century work from this country and complete the representation of contemporary work from all the old European glass producers.

Banana Cake Melted butter, to grease; 2 eggs, at room temperature; 125ml buttermilk; 100ml extra light olive oil; 1 teaspoon vanilla essence; 2 ripe bananas, mashed; 60g brown sugar; 70g caster sugar; 190g selfraising flour; 40g plain flour; 200g cream cheese, at room temperature, chopped; 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon rind; 125g pure icing sugar, sifted; 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice; 2 tablespoons shredded coconut, toasted Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush a 6cmdeep, 11 x 21cm (base measurement) loaf pan with melted butter to grease. Whisk the eggs, buttermilk, oil and vanilla essence in a medium bowl until well combined. Stir in the banana. Add the brown sugar and caster sugar
and stir until well combined. Sift the combined flour over the egg mixture and stir until well combined. Pour into the prepared pan. Bake in oven, covering with foil if necessary to prevent overbrowning, for 40-45 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Set aside in the pan for 20 minutes to cool slightly before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely. Use an electric beater to beat the cream cheese and lemon rind in a bowl until smooth. Gradually add the icing sugar and beat until well combined. Stir in the lemon juice. Spread the icing over the cake and sprinkle with the coconut to serve.

LOCAL FUNDING URGENTLY NEEDED A new program using Hands on Learning is being trialled at four south-west schools and is already making significant progress but needs a funding boost to survive. Funding for the program will end in June next year and $60,000 is needed for it to continue. The Regional Engagement Expansion Project (REEP), an initiative of South West Local Learning and Employment Network and the Department of Education and Training, has adopted the Hands on Learning program to better engage students at risk of disengagement from education Sixty one students considered to be at-risk of leaving education are participating in Hands on Learning which aims to help them to feel connected, have access to real achievements, and to build social contacts. It provides a more intensive support and wellbeing system in each of the four schools. REEP coordinator Heather Reardon said early indications were good. “The feedback from the teachers at this stage is that we’re getting really good results. The students’ attendance is improving; their behaviour in the classroom is improving which is a benefit for the whole school, and there is a lot of disclosure as their confidence builds.” Initial funding was obtained from the Department of Education and Training to research and implement a suitable strategy; and Hands on Learning Australia funded the program trial. However there was no funding to introduce an ongoing program. The schools have provided a teacher or wellbeing staff member to work with new `artisan’ trade teachers whose salaries are covered until June 2016 by Hands on Learning Australia through philanthropic funding. “We need about $60,000 to cover the costs of the new artisan teacher salaries for the remainder of 2016.” Ms Reardon said it was hoped the funding could be confirmed this year for planning purposes.

Local Sport BASKETBALL Johnson stars as Pioneers claim back to back national titles Tom Daly’s half court Hail Mary will be an enduring memory from the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers SEABL national championship victory on Saturday night, giving the club back to back national titles, and third national gong overall. But the final quarter from eventual grand final MVP Damian Johnson had to be seen to be believed and was, in the end, the difference between the two sides. Johnson scored 14 of his 21 points in a purple patch that saw him basically singlehandedly take the game from all squared away to safely in the Pioneers’ hands. He also picked up a block and six rebounds in the frenetic final quarter where his run of 14 points was not punctuated with a dunk, as you would normally expect from the hard working, athletic big man, but with a less typical three point gem with 1:48 to play and the, then, 11 point margin put the result beyond doubt and was, indeed, the final margin. With Tyrone Lee and Brad Hill in some foul trouble in the national championship decider, the role of Johnson, and indeed Tom Daly and Erik Burdon was critical. As the previous matches in the 2015 finals series have, the national final started as a defensive arm wrestle with errors from both sides and neither side really finding their radar. Halfway through the opener, the scores were locked at 8-all but
eventually shots started to drop and when Hill drained a three with 30 seconds to play in the first, the Pioneers enjoyed a five point lead but was extended to seven when Lukass Blicavs showed nerves of steel to sink a two point jumper and make the quarter time lead seven. Johnson then scored first in the second to make it nine points but the Bandits are a tenacious group and every time the Pioneers looked to set up a more comfortable buffer, the Albury Wodonga
boys rallied. They enjoyed the weight of quality possession was with the Bandits in the second quarter but they just could not buy a basket in the middle part of the second quarter. The flip side of that poor shooting, was Burdon – the long serving Pioneer hitting two critical threes to push the margin back out to eight points with two and a half minutes to play in the half but the Bandits again rallied and at the main break it was a three point ball game in favour of the
Pioneers. Burdon started the second half as he ended the first – hitting two trademark threes that seemed to lift his side and they pushed out to a double figure lead for the first time in the national title decider. The Bandits again made a run at the Pioneers and with just over two minutes to play in the third, scores were again locked away. Johnson restored the lead for the 2014 champions from the charity stripe before Daly released the ball from the three point line at the
defensive end of the court to hit that unbelievable, buzzer beating three to make the three quarter time lead five points. With eight minutes to play in the final term, the scores were again locked away before Johnson went on his offensive assault that turned the game permanently and ended the Bandits’ defiance. It was a stunning effort from the man named the SEABL defensive player of the year at the weekend’s SEABL awards function. He ended his MVP
winning performance with 21 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Burdon was the Pioneers leading scorer with 22, while Daly chipped in with 19 and Lee and Hill both scored 10 from less court time that usual courtesy of their foul issues. See our facebook page for more Pioneers news from the SEABL Awards function.
