LOCAL Mount Gambier has a new national champion Mount District Indoor Bowls Association members Fiona Pearson and Brad Errock have claimed medals in the Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National championships held in Warrnambool, Victoria, at the end of last month. Fiona Pearson claimed the gold medal in the Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Ladies Pairs championship with her Broken Hill partner Samantha Hawke. The pair played nine games – each of 16 ends - over the five days, winning eight in stunning display of consistency. With seven Australian team representatives throughout the other teams, the competition was very strong, and Pearson believed that when she looked at the teams on paper at the start of the week, she would be happy with two wins. Pearson and Hawke proved this wrong, going into the last day on top of the standings, but still needing to win the last game to claim the title, with three other teams breathing down their necks. This was accomplished by the narrowest of margin against the Queensland team of Jody Moore and Carmel Blyth, winning 16 to 15, to secure the Australian title. This is Pearson’s second national title, adding to her 2010 ladies singles title. Brad Errock also came home a happy man after playing very consistent bowls over the week, to win the silver medal in the Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Men’s Singles championship. Errock was ecstatic with his result. Going into the last game to win the bronze medal, he beat the Australian representative Ian Ogilvie 22 to 18, then other results went his way to catapult him into second place. Brad finished with two losses, one draw and six wins.

AT THE THEATRE New Glass • HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON • Until October 4 The gallery holds an extensive collection of glass and continues to develop this part of the collection. In the past few years groups of glass from Japan, Czechoslovakia, England and Australia have entered the collection. Some of these – such as the studio glass from Japan and Australia – are of recent origin whereas that from England was made anonymously in the 18th and 19th centuries. The pieces from Czechoslovakia (the old Bohemian Glass) are from the 1960s and 1970s when the country was under communist rule and little glass was exported to the West. At last we have been able to represent the 20th century work from this country and complete the representation of contemporary work from all the old European glass producers.

LOCAL National award for children’s educator Southern Grampians Shire Council Family Day Care service has welcomed Family Day Care Australia’s announcement that Coleraine based educator Chantelle Connoway is a winner in the 2015 Family Day Care Educator of the Year Awards. Chantelle was awarded the Local Educator of the Year for the Horsham and Grampians region. Chantelle has been providing her family day care service to the Coleraine district for close to five years. In that time, she has constantly strived to extend her knowledge and skills, obtaining her Diploma in Children’s Services and an Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management On being told that she was a winner, Chantelle said “It is such an honour knowing the families have nominated me for this award and I would just like to thank them for trusting me with the care of their precious children. I also thank my husband Jan who has helped me create a beautiful play environment for the children. Much appreciated also are Children’s Services Coordinator Lyn and

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Fieldworker Kim for all their support, not only for me but for all our educators. I am just so lucky to get to work with young children and I learn just as much from them as they learn from me. I have a strong interest in environmental sustainability, and love that I can teach the children about caring for the environment through activities such as using natural materials, recycling and growing vegetables. My curriculum program reflects our passion for sustainability and I love that what I teach the children today could change the way they look at the world tomorrow.” In 2014 Chantelle won the Sustainability Award in the Southern Grampians/Ace Radio Business Awards. Lyn Hodkinson, Southern Grampians Shire Council Children’s Services Coordinator said council was thrilled at Chantelle’s award. “It is so very much deserved,” Ms Hodkinson said. “She is a wonderful ambassador, not only for our own service, but for Family Day Care as a whole.” Southern Grampians Shire Family Day Care service has recently launched their Facebook page which provides an opportunity for members of the public to see the amazing care and education being provided by the educators.

ADVERTORIAL Mad end of season sale at discount nursery This late burst of cold winter weather has certainly put the cat among the pigeons. When is spring ever going to come? A few days ago it was almost spring, albeit momentarily. As I write this the sun is shining, even though the nights are crisp, verging on frosts still. This combination of weather triggers plants in to life, as well as dormant bulbs and tubers. This is the last chance to plant tulips, hyacinths, crocus and daffodils and all of these are currently reduced to half price to clear the decks and also the last chance to plant seed potatotes, which is early but all of the major suppliers have sold out early this year, so be quick. It would be wonderful to have the temperatures rising and a bit more sunshine for us growers and most gardeners. Now is the absolute last chance to plant bare rooted trees, shrubs and fruit trees and roses, as the buds are bursting into life on most deciduous trees and roses in the past week. The staff at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Roses have been madly potting for the past month or so in readiness for spring and summer. We have some amazing deals on the ever popular ornamental pears, Claret Ash, the ever popular and stunning Golden Elm, London plane trees plus mop top trees at ridiculous prices, which are great for formal gardens. A whole host of fruit trees including peaches, nectarines, 2014 new release dwarf

Angel peach plus figs and mulberries and, of course, citrus trees. Spring is the best time to plant citrus trees and with $10 off advanced and extra large grade trees, the time has never been better. Advanced Silver Birch trees are only $9.90 and half price Mop Top Robinias have been racing out the door, so be quick as there are only limited numbers remaining. Heaps of the new dwarf and semi dwarf fruit trees including apricots, blood plums, peaches and nectarines are half price too and with their popularity in recent years I never thought I would see us reducing these to such low prices or $89 for four trees, which of course are ideal as they are easy to net and produce more fruit than full sized trees and can also be espaliered or grown in pots. With the expansion of the advanced tree section again this spring, this will mean even more stock than ever will be on site and in larger numbers, saving us time bringing stock in from our growing facility. The expansion will allow homeowners mainly, the chance to browse an even broader range of trees which can be purchased straight away, although landscapers, councils and developers will benefit too from the added stock held. At present we have five grades of trees from advanced right through to semi mature in 200 litre bags, with plans to introduce more grades for everyone in every price point. The range includes deciduous, evergreen, native, fruit

trees, citrus, including espaliered, as well as many eucalyptus and pittosporum varieties. In addition we will increase the number of in ground displays to show customers the ultimate size and shape that can be attained in a particular tree. Spring is the most spectacular time to look at and purchase blossom trees. Despite the wind over the past few weeks, a great deal of spectacular trees around the region have still put on their wonderful displays. Here, at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees we have nearly half price off all our bare rooted dormant weeping cherries for the next week unless sold out or they burst in to bud prior, in which case they will have to be potted up, as well as 25% off all advanced blossom trees in flower right now including many of the sought after magnolias like Black Tulip, as well as the three new releases for 2015, Genie, Cleopatra and Cameo (see pictures facing page). This includes the 2013 new release flowering cherry, sister to Snow Fountains called Pink Showers, the narrower growing form of pink cherry that has taken the gardening world by storm, with its masses of flowers down the entire length of the branches to ground level. At present we have our Magnificent Magnolias festival on and the nursery is packed full of dozens of flowering magnolias in all shapes and sizes, and with 25% off for the next week, now is the time to rush in and look at these

magical trees and shrubs in full bloom. My particular favourite is Black Tulip with its deep beetroot/ burgundy cup shaped blooms that are huge and last so well. This tougher variety from New Zealand is hard to rival, but the traditional Nigra two toned varieties with darker striped outers and pure white inners are still as popular as ever (see picture in our advert). If you have not considered one then now is a good time to see an accurate flower colour, rather than going on books and labels which can be incorrect. Our range of metal animals made by orphans in Zimbabwe are also half price in the sale, this includes, large birds, such as heron and brolgas right down to the cute esky cooler like the VW Kombi, Truck and Woody (see advert) and even the cow mailbox, just what every farm entrance needs, or if you missed getting dad his father’s day present, here is a chance to redeem yourself. Spring is, of course, the time for cleaning and we are no different. With masses of new lines arriving from one of my recent buying trips, we need room. So, we are clearing a lot of ex-demo water features and fountains at less than cost. Outdoor furniture settings have been slashed to clear,

as well as pots, to make way for container loads of new fountains, pots and garden arbours. The new ranges include some amazing metal sculptures, wall art, benches and arches, along with a whole new range of outdoor furniture cementing Gardenarium as the outdoor furniture specialists in the region. With our direct purchasing and the continuing strength of the dollars our prices are set to fall again on much of our range. We also have a whole new range of reclaimed teak outdoor furniture to complement the range we started a few years ago which has been hugely successful, with new dining chairs at incredibly low prices and casual outdoor couches and seating for 2015 (see website for details).Keep an eye out on television for our new outdoor furniture advert - you’re going to love it. So, what are you waiting for - get your trailer or ute and get on down to gardenarium and the Limestone Coast Group at 167,Bay Road (Riddoch Hwy) in Mount Gambier and grab a bargain as long as stocks last, which wont be long given the discounts. RENEWED RETAIL SPACE SHOWCASES LOCAL MAKERS AND ARTISANS A new vibrant retail team at Julia Street Creative Space has renewed the retail area and reinvigorated its image with beautifully displayed new and existing locally made art and craft. “We are thrilled to have attracted local retail specialist Megan Jarrett and artist Jenny Griffin (work pictured above) to volunteer their time and expertise to our retail area,” Susie Lyons, Chair of Julia Street Creative Space said. “Together with volunteers Nikki Pevitt and Rebecca Marriott, the transformation has been fantastic – not only does it look upbeat and contemporary but sales are already on the rise. Proving that the renewal is working and totally worth it. Our vision is to stock high quality artisan goods that reflect current trends. Our hope is that this will encourage creativity amongst the local population and be the ‘go to’ gift shopping destination for locals and tourists alike. We invite people to come and browse our renewed space and buy local, that way you are not only supporting our local artisans but also fostering a vibrant community culture.” JSCS is an important and iconic community arts facility in Portland, South West Victoria with a retail space, a community gallery, a artist residency program and five dedicated art studios catering for printmakers, woodworkers, lead lighters, textiles artists and painters. It is managed by a dedicated volunteer committee and is open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, and Saturday, 10am to 1pm.

New surgeon joins Portland staff Australia’s enviable reputation as a destination of choice is bearing fruit for Portland’s new general surgeon Mr Turab Pishori. Mr Pishori replaces Mr Thair Abbas as Portland’s resident general surgeon and says Australia has lived up to his expectations. He was attracted for the same reasons others venture down under…work-life balance and excellent education opportunities. After three years in the country he says the move has worked “down to the letter”. Mr Pishori has moved from Perth where he was based for almost three years. He arrives in

Portland with his wife and two younger children and will be joined by his older children after they finish the school year. Mr Pishori came to Australia from Pakistan on a specialist pathway and completed his two-year Australian registration requirements for international graduates at four tertiary hospitals in Perth. Last year he also completed his Australian Fellowship in General Surgery and qualified with his specialist registration. In the past six months he has worked primarily in colon and rectal surgery, his main area of interest. The move to Portland has been a perfect family and professional fit. “I was keen to get a consultant position appropriate to my level and Portland was an ideal fit,” he said. “I’m really enjoying the new challenge and the community. I welcome the opportunity to move to a regional town. I’ve been in a big centre and I think here I will be able to realign my surgical commitments and family and lifestyle balance.” Prior to entering the Australian system, Mr Pishori was a practising consultant in Pakistan for about 10 years with an academic and research background. He will be doing general surgery in Portland, mostly in abdominal but also in his specialist colorectal field. “I expect a wide spectrum of patients but more complex and complicated cases will continue to be referred to larger hospitals,”

LOCAL Two Bayview College students touched by cancer have done their part in making treatment easier for Portland chemotherapy patients. Sophie Hardingham, 15, who was affected by cancer when her Nan was diagnosed earlier this year, and her friend Aleisha Campbell, approached Bayview College staff to raise funds through a casual day and cake stall. Their efforts culminated in a casual clothing and cake sale day last Friday at school which raised $571.15, more than half the amount required for Portland District Health (PDH) to purchase a new Alaris Module. An Alaris LVP Module is a side pod that attaches onto an IV Pump to allow more than one medication to be administered to a cancer patient. PDH Sub-Acute Nurse Unit Manager Natalie Herbertson, who manages the chemotherapy unit, said it had been a fantastic effort by the students. “PDH needs more of these units due to the demand of more complex patients requiring several different medications administered via an IV Pump,” she said. Sophie said her Nan spent time in Melbourne at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where she was provided wonderful support. “I thought I could be part of fundraising efforts locally after I heard about the chemotherapy unit in Portland.” she said. “The teachers helped me to organise the fundraising day and they have been really supportive. Aleisha, my Nan and I cooked all sorts of sweet treats to sell to students.” PDH CEO Chris Giles said the introduction of the chemotherapy unit had saved patients travel and inconvenience during a difficult time in their lives. “Portland District Health Chemotherapy Unit opened 12 months ago and treatments have far exceeded the contracted 90 treatments, with 240 treatments having been completed at the end of June,” she said. “We’re thrilled to have the support of the Bayview College students and appreciate the support to raise funds.”

With just a month to go until the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro 400, the third and final round of the South Australian Off Road Championship, and the third round of the ARB Off Road Racing Series, the members from the Millicent Sand Buggy Club have spent hours at the Teagle’s Quarry arena preparing the venue for the onslaught of racers and spectators. Jumps in the inner arena been moved while others have been tweaked, and come race end on Sunday, September 27, three teams and their cars will sit on the new winners podium in full view of the large spectators. The property has a picturesque green tinge and should be perfect come race weekend. As the final round of the South Australia Off Road Championship and with the points tight at the top of the leader board – only 11 points separating the top six – the scene is set for a bumper end to the 2015 South Australian Off Road Championship year. Will the Championship podium be an all Element Prodigy affair with Aaron Haby, Carl Haby and Chris Western currently the top three in the points, or will Greg Gartner, Lindsay Foster or Daniel Lamb be a thorn in the Element’s side?

Wattle Range Council is currently seeking feedback from the community of Millicent regarding the future format of its pre-Christmas street party. A key date on the community calendar, Millicent’s street party is an exciting tradition for the town’s children and adults alike. Historically the iconic event had been organised by a small sub committee of the Millicent Business Community Association, however following a recent shift in focus by the group, the most recent festivities were coordinated by the Wattle Range Council. This year will again see council take on this role, and they are currently seeking advice and assistance from the public at this early stage in preparations. An online survey has been developed to assist in evaluating the most appropriate date and format for the event. A joint initiative by the Council and the Millicent Business Community Association, it is hoped this survey will ensure that this year’s event will be a success. Residents are encouraged to have their say by completing the survey, available online at www.wattlerange. sa.gov.au

Local Sport History making football & netball winners It was a case of Mid South East royalty being honoured last Monday night when the A Grade football and netball best & fairest winners established themselves unrivalled in Mid South East history - Will MacDonald winning his fourth Mail Medal, the first Mid South East player to achieve that mark, and Kalangadoo star Jayde Peacock winning her sixth A Grade netball best & fairest. MacDonald has been a mainstay of the voting in the past few years. The athletic, hard running ruckman is all class and often morphs into an onballer or dangerous forward as well. An unassuming player who lets his football do the talking, MacDonald is rarely out of the Demons’ best and in Saturday’s second semi final was again influential in ensuring his team advanced to the grand final. MacDonald’s win was all the more meritorious given team mate Dylan Bromley finished in the runner-up position with Mt Burr’s Thomas Renzi. Peacock also established herself as the best player to play in the netball competition - her sixth title surpassing the previous record, held by fellow Magpie, Judy Hill, who has five best & fairests to her name. Testament to Peacock’s supreme talent is the fact her six awards have spanned almost two decades. Her first gong came as a teenager in 1997, before a three-peat of awards from 1999-2001 and now back to back titles in 2014 and ‘15. Like MacDonald, Peacock will be featuring in the 2015 season decider after her team toppled Port MacDonnell in the second semi final at the weekend, defeating the Demons for the first time this season. Local Sport BASKETBALL Pioneers secure three-peat of South Conference titles The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers are one step closer to claiming their third national championship, taking out the South Conference decider on Friday night at the Icehouse. The 14 point victory was the club’s four South Conference title and third in succession in the Richard Hill era but as they have every other time they have claimed the South Conference championship, the big picture is all about the national title. The Pioneers will face the Albury Wodonga Bandits at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night. The low scoring, defensive stoush was typical of a final with both sides having a nervous start with a number of turnovers and missed shots. Not surprisingly, arguably the most influential player on court was Damian Johnson, as much for his defensive efforts as his game high 20 points. It was the third quarter that saw the Pioneers take control of the contest and that was when Johnson was at his best. While he had plenty of support, it was Johnson’s

eight points, one steal, two blocks and two defensive rebounds that enabled the home side to take a stranglehold on the contest, going into the final change with a 14 point lead. It all started with a dunk from the talented import with 7:27 to play in the third to give the Pioneers the first double figure lead of the contest, and only 30 seconds later a perfect alley oop pass from Brad Hill, who was also influential with his 18 points, allowed Johnson to again show his athleticism as the Pioneers assumed control. And when skipper Matt Sutton drained a three pointer with only seconds to play in the third the 14 point lead seemed to break the Braves’ spirit. The closest Bendigo was able to get in the final stanza was 11 points and while the Pioneers did get out to as high as a 22 point lead, when the skipper hit his second three for the match, in the end the title was theirs courtesy of that 14 point three quarter time advantage. Johnson finished with 20 points, 14 rebounds, an astonishing seven blocks,

three steals and an assist. But when the final whistle sounded, it was the future of the club on the Icehouse pine with youngsters Brad Rathjen, Dellon Brown, Hayden Annett and Makoi Makuer on the floor with veteran Kurt Russell. The Pioneers led by one at quarter time and four at the main break before the surge in the third quarter. To hold Bendigo to 65 points would certainly be pleasing for the Pioneers, who pride themselves on relentless defensive pressure - a commitment that then allows them to play their favoured fast break offence. It means they have kept the Braves to less than 70 points in both

finals outings and any time the Pioneers can keep their opposition to that low a score, they have great confidence they boast the scoring power in the likes of Johnson, Hill, Tom Daly, Erik Burdon and Tyrone Lee to shoot a winning score. The club is booking buses to get supporters to Dandenong this Saturday night. Seats are $85 Adults,

$65 14 & Under. Buses will depart the Icehouse 12noon Saturday and return after game. Payment required on booking and for more details and took your place contact Tom Kosch at tom@ pioneersbasketball.com.au or by calling 0438 838 186. Anyone wanting tickets but don’t require the bus please also contact Tom so the

Pioneers contingent can all sit together as one. SEABL Ticket prices are $20 Adults, $10 Child (6-16), 5 & under free. $60 Adults & go on sale Monday. PHOTO COURTESY OF STEVE RICE

DEMONS INTO TITLE DECIDER Port MacDonnell has advanced to the 2015 season decider with a tough 11 point victory over Mt Burr – the Mossies now left to tackle reigning premiers Kalangadoo in this weekend’s preliminary final. So often called the premiership quarter, it was in the third term that the Demons made their move after a solid opening half. Luke McIntyre, who kicked three of his four goals, in the third, was just one of many Demons to lift his intensity in the second half. Despite being the first time the Demons have conceded 100 points in 2015, it was the backline that received most praise from newly crowned Mid South East Football League coach of the year Leigh Capewell, with Ryan Fox heading that list. “Ryan (Fox) was absolutely outstanding,” Capewell said. “They were getting the better of the centre clearances and that had our backline under pressure so it was good to see them stand up.” Mark Smith was also critical, covering incredible territory with his hard running and willingness to get to the contest. The Demons actually opened the contest strongly and had the better of the play but some poor conversion in front of goal looked set to derail the boys from the Bay. There were three or four shots in the opening term from around 35metres out that should have been slotted so to only be nine points in arrears. The dominance of Clint Gallio, 2015 joint Walker Medallist Thomas Renzi and Jonathon Agnew on the ball was a key factor in the Mossies having the better of the first half, leading the contest by two goals at the main break. “We got our pants pulled down a bit in the middle of the ground in the first half,” Capewell said. But the six goal to three third quarter saw the Demons sneak to a four point lead going into the final term and the big question was could the Demons, who have not had a competitive match for a month, run out the contest. “We were confident we would

edit - sport.indd 1

run it out,” Capewell said. “We have done a fair bit of work on the track in the past three weeks.” As expected the Mossies came hard in the final quarter but not before the Demons had extended their lead and eight points was the closest the Mossies managed as Port MacDonnell held on for an 11 point victory and a berth in the 2015 grand final. Once again, four time Mail Medallist Will MacDonald, who claimed that unprecedented fourth best & fairest last Monday night, was a factor with his work around the ground and at stoppages. An eight goal haul from Dylan Bromley was also impressive – the key forward and joint runner-up in the 2015 A Grade medal count got on the end of some impressive work from his team mates. “There are still areas we have to improve in,” Capewell said, as his side looks for another two weeks of no footy except for on the training track. Along with Gallio lifestyle1.net | 36

and Agnew, Taylor Redden and Dylan Ridley were also key players for the Mossies, with Ridley and Jack Gregory both bagging four goals.

Above (centre) - Tigers Under 13 Boys player Addison Hill controls the ball in midfield. Above (bottom) - West’s Robyn Mengler drives the ball into the attacking circle in Division 3 Women.

Lori-Ann Copping has been such an amazing player across all grades for South Gambier, with her pace, incredible leap and ability as an almost contortionist to get to balls that he has no right to reach, emerging as hallmarks of her stellar career. Suffering the frustration of a season ending injury, Lori-Ann has still been such a vital part of the B Grade’s 2015 campaign with her insights from the sideline. An outstanding mid courter across all three positions, Lori-Ann is also a more than handy circle defender. Tenacious and determined, LoriAnn is such a hard worker, who leaves everything out on the court. Lori-Ann has a swag of top five finishes in association best & fairests and plenty of silverware at club level. Lori-Ann is also a tireless volunteer for the club and has been a senior and junior coach over the journey. Lori-Ann is a 300 game veteran of Western Border netball, for which she was honoured last year, including her early years at Penola, when the Eagles were part of the Western Border competition.

Bridgestone Australia & Trident Tyre Centre is proud to again be the Principal Partner of the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual Light the Night. More than 60,000 people are living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder, and another 34 people are diagnosed every day. Thankfully, the Leukaemia Foundation is committed to fighting this terrible statistic as part of a quest for a blood cancer free future. Light the Night events raise funds and hope to support Australian families affected by blood cancer.
