LOCAL The original pioneer, the history making coach, the homegrown hero and the championship superstars all inducted into Pioneers inaugural Hall of Fame The man who dared to dream, the coach who led the club to its first ever championship, the local hero stranded on 199 games, who inspired a generation of young South East basketballers to be the best they could be, the 267 game champion, who brought his big frame and his big heart to the fledgling club, and two of the most popular imports to ever grace the Icehouse pine – a former captain, coach and Allan Scott Medallist, who ended his tenure as an Aussie, and the three time club MVP and selfproclaimed X factor, who was also adjudged the best player in the club’s history at the 25 year anniversary celebrations in 2013 – this is the class of 2015 – the first six inductees into the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers Hall of Fame. The first inductee was the late Bill Hately, the man who took the now infamous phone call in 1987, from Basketball Australia board member Dick Butler to ascertain interest from the South Australian regional centre to join a national competition – an off season alternative to the top level National Basketball League. That casual inquiry turned into a serious discussion at Basketball Mount Gambier, as Hately urged the local administrators and volunteers to seriously consider the golden opportunity to start up a national sporting team. As with most big dreams, this one was going to

need money, and Hately sold his vision to local business icon Allan Scott.

Hately’s ability to convince Mr Scott to back the venture was arguably the most vital step in the early process of setting up the Pioneers – the $25,000 a season for three years and the guarantee he would cover the club no matter how things worked out, ensured the rest of the pieces of the puzzle could be brought together with more confidence. Hately then rolled up his sleeves, and like so many other volunteers in the early years, ensured the club was built on solid foundations, making him a walk up start for the club’s greatest honour.

When it comes to coaches, since Doug Romain led the inaugural side, there have been some memorable ones – the fiery and passionate Mark Lampshire, the measured student of the game John Burns and current chief, Richard Hill, who has overseen a period of excellence unsurpassed at the Bern Bruning Stadium. But there was little doubt it would be the history making Sonya Knight that would get the nod. Arguably a mixture of the best of all her predecessors and the current coach – Knight had the passion of Lampshire, the composure of Burns and the professionalism of Hill and built a team that had not only talent but an on and off court chemistry that has made many of those inaugural championship

players such loved figures at the club.

Tactically astute, Knight was also a great people manager, and she stands in history as not only the first Pioneer coach to mastermind a championship and the club’s first silverware, but she was also the first, and still only, female coach to achieve that feat in the ABL. “Sonya just had a knack for knowing what to do and when to do it,” championship co-captain Damien Anderson said. “She knew when guys needed a kick to get going and she also knew when to just step back a little and give space and let the team develop. A lot of coaches do one or the other but she really knew how to have a great balance of both.” There is no doubt, the selection committee would have had an extensive list of players from which to select the final four and no doubt many on that list will eventually find their way onto the Hall of Fame honour roll. In terms of locally born and bred talent, Tony Cook was always going to be the name at the top of the list. Speaking at the club’s 25th anniversary celebrations, Cook’s fond memories of the early years were palpable. “It was fantastic – it was all new and exciting and a privilege to be a part of it. Andre (La Fleur) was fantastic – I could talk about him all night and Dwayne (Cross) and (Willie) Jennette, they were amazing players that took us along for a ride. We had a new look side most years – you got

what you were given and you had to make it fit. To last 25 years in a country town is an amazing effort and it’s a testament to more than just the players, it’s the volunteers, the boards

over the years, and the community – that has always supported the team.” The number one ticket holder of the club, Cook was poetry in motion on the court and nothing looked difficult for the smooth moving, sharp shooter. “It gave a lot of us young local guys something to aspire to – we all wanted to be Tony Cook,” former Pioneer Daniel Stratford said.

Hately’s vision, and that of all those who helped build the club in the early years, was to provide a platform for local talent and Cook epitomised that and inspired younger basketballers to dream of wearing the Pioneers singlet.

Chicken meatball penne with mustard sauce 500g lean chicken sausages 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 250g button mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon plain flour 1 cup chicken stock 300ml pure cream 2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives Cooked penne pasta and steamed broccoli, to serve Method Squeeze chicken from sausage casings into a bowl. Roll level tablespoons into balls. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add meatballs.

Cook, turning, for 4 to 5 minutes or until browned and cooked through.

Transfer to a plate lined with paper

Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until mushrooms are tender. Sprinkle flour into pan. Stir for 1 minute. Add stock, cream and mustard. Stir until well combined. Reduce heat to mediumlow. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until sauce has thickened slightly. Return meatballs to pan with half the chives.

Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 1 minute or until heated through.

Divide pasta between bowls. Spoon over meatball mixture. Sprinkle with remaining chives. Serve with broccoli.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED The Rotary Club of Warrnambool 2015 Deakin Student Award winner, Jimmy Crawford, has immersed himself in the local community since moving to Warrnambool at the start of 2014. Mr Crawford grew up on Flinders Island 54 kilometres north-east of Tasmania where the population hovers around 800, but has quickly made the adjustment to life in Warrnambool. He started his Marine Biology studies at the Deakin University Warrnambool Campus in 2014 and soon became a key player for the Deakin Sharks.

In addition to his sporting involvements, Mr Crawford is registered with the CFA and Warrnambool Coast Guard and is volunteering with the whale watching and recording program this year. He is involved with volunteering for Fishcare Victoria and has been to East Warrnambool Primary helping teach children about bag limits, catch sizes and invasive species. Mr Crawford was awarded the School of Life and Environmental Sciences Head of School prize early this year for the highest weighted average mark in the Bachelor of Environmental Science (Marine Biology) among full-time first year students. Rotary Club of Warrnambool Vocational Services Director, Gordon Curran, said the $1,000 award was made annually to a student making excellent academic progress while maintaining active involvement in community or student affairs. The award was presented by Deakin University Warrnambool Head of Campus Professor Gerry Quinn last Tuesday.

LOCAL Breast cancer fundraiser returns in 2015 Last year it was a Winter Wonderland – this year, organisers are keeping the wonderland theme but moving the even from July to October, making it a Wonderland in Pink. It was a major fundraiser for the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group, and while last year, some funds were channelled the way of Breast Cancer Network Australia, this year, the focus will be almost predominantly local.

Wonderland in Pink will be held on October 31 from 6.30pm at the Attamurra Golf Club. The $82 a head, three course meal will be catered by St Bees, and there will be live entertainment from Terry Sutherland and Jools. The 2015 guest speaker will be Corrine Bryan, a locally based breast cancer survivor. The auction also

Groundwater concerns

Southern Grampians Shire Council is concerned to have received advice of ground water contamination at the CFA training facility in Penshurst, as outlined in a media release issued by the Environment Protection Authority last week.

The State Government authorities such as the Environment Protection Authority, Wannon Water, Southern Rural Water, CFA and the Department of Health and Human Services are working together to manage this situation. Southern Grampians Mayor Cr Peter Dark advised that council will do everything possible, working with these authorities, to ensure that further information is made available as soon as possible. Wannon Water has advised that there are no restrictions on the use of the urban water supply. Nevertheless it has taken water samples for testing as a precautionary measure to confirm that no contamination exists. These results will be available next week.

Community response needed for Year 12 challenge The south-west community needs to rally behind schools and families to improve education retention and attainment rates. South West LLEN Chief Executive Officer Toni Jenkins said the current system was not succeeding but the community needed to work together to tackle the problem. “Our schools are doing a very good job in difficult circumstances, but Year 12 attainment is not just the purview of schools; it needs to be a whole-of-community response,” Ms Jenkins said.

Responding to public concerns that students not achieving Year 12 have dismal job prospects, Ms Jenkins said there was a lot of work, planning and innovation needed to try to “fix a system that is no longer working”. “We’ve been trying to make this change over the past 12 years and recently the formation of the Beyond the Bell group has been a significant positive step forward,” Ms Jenkins said.

“Now we’ve got the community working together, but it takes 10 years to make systemic change and it needs to be ably funded to make something happen.”

Ms Jenkins said Beyond the Bell recognised that the responsibility for education attainment doesn’t just sit with schools. “It takes a village to raise a child,” she said. “Beyond the Bell is a collection of people from the village who want to support raising children. It’s not just the schools.” Ms Jenkins said the LLEN and Beyond the Bell were seeking systemic change for people before birth to 19 years and beyond. “The system needs to change to meet the needs of all young people and to encourage all people to see education as a high priority,” she said. Ms Jenkins said that while completing Year 12 was an important facet of education, it was only part of the picture. “Year 12 or equivalent is not a destination; it’s a springboard,” she said. “We have to remember that not everyone is suited to an academic pathway and there needs to be a breadth of subjects so young people can find something they want to do. It’s not just about academic pathways and university but how we raise our children to find their talents. If we can improve access, provision and choice then we’ll help people find jobs that suit them:” Ms Jenkins said South West LLEN was a strong supporter of Beyond the Bell but was just one of many contributors. “There are more than 100 organisations from health and community groups to local government and education providers who have contributed the equivalent of $700,000 worth of in-kind support for Beyond the Bell because they realise it is a high priority for our area. Now the government needs to recognise this work and fund Beyond the Bell to continue and grow and do what is needed for our young people.”

The City of Mount Gambier, in partnership with Permaculture Mount Gambier, will present an introductory session on how to “Get Growing”, followed by a seed swap and interactive planting demonstrations. The event will be held in conjunction with the Mount Gambier Farmers Market. Following on from the success of the Mount Gambier Edible City project launch, the coming workshop in the series, will be an introduction to fruit and vegetable gardening accompanied by a seed swap. The Mount Gambier Edible City project aims to promote the development of Mount Gambier’s local food culture – encouraging residents to grow their own food whilst supporting existing local food producers to connect with and educate the community. The workshop will involve giving the community the basic knowledge required to start growing their own food. The City of Mount Gambier acknowledges the efforts of the community, who are committed to strengthening food security across the city and envisages an

informal network could develop out of the program, with people making their own connections with other food growers and build resilience within the community. The session will run from 10-11am this Sunday in Garden Square, Mount Gambier.

The Mount Gambier City Band turns 120 years this year and on Sunday it will also celebrate 50 years since the City Band Hall was opened. The concert is a flashback to that opening concert, featuring the city band, Casterton Band, Mount Gambier Concert Band, a saxopone trio, choirrs, pianists and vocalists and will be compered by Dale Cleves, whose father compered the opening concert in 1965. There are three members of the band today that were in the band in 1965 for that opening concert. The concert starts at 2pm and is $5 entry.

LOCAL New innovation in dairy farming An Australian-first clear-roofed deep-litter cow shelter at a dairy farm near Warrnambool is boosting farm production and profitability while improving animal comfort. The 48.6x81m shelter has been built on the farm of Simon and Pep Rea at Panmure by Dairy Shelters Australia.

Mr and Mrs Rea have joined with local vet David Colson and his wife Sue-Ellen to launch Dairy Shelters Australia. The new shelter will allow the Reas to boost their herd from 430 to 550 and to protect their paddocks from winter pugging. Mr Rea said he introduced the shelter to combat south-west Victoria’s typically wet winters. “We’ve always struggled in July and August which has been a limiting factor on the farm,” he said.

“We’ve been reluctant to have too many cows but this will allow us to increase the stocking rate to the level needed to manage the spring pasture.

“It’s like an insurance policy against the wet weather.” Dairy Shelters Australia has customised New Zealand-made Redpath clear-roofed, deep-litter shelters for the Australian dairy industry. They are made from flexible polythene membranes components and the deep woodchip floor can be easily cleaned using a simple scarifying process. “As far as we know this is the first stand-off shelter for cows in Australia,” Mr Rea said. “There are smaller calf sheds but the point of difference here is the clear roof which lets sunlight through,

helping to keep the woodchip floor dry and control bacteria,” he said.

“A milking cow can safely sit down without risk of mastitis.” The shelters can be built at any size to meet farmer needs and have successfully housed herds of up to 1200 in New Zealand.

“We can comfortably run our shelter with 300 cows for longer periods but shorter term we could house the whole herd,” Mr Rea said. “I’ll mainly target winter as a management tool to effectively halve my stocking rate in the wetter months. When I judge a paddock to be too wet and prone to pasture damage, I’ll move half the herd into the shelter and rotate them every 12 hours between the shelter and the paddocks.”

“They will still get paddock time but there will be less walking for the cows and the woodchip floor will give them great relief in the periods they need it the most.”

The shelters also feature vents and retractable sun shades to protect cows during heatwaves.

“It’s open now for full sunlight which will be warmer and drier for the cows but the shades are available if needed in summer,” Mr Rea said. The Reas will increase their herd by 120 over the next two years. Mr Rea said an economic analysis of their farm’s predicted performance with the shelter showed the capital investment had a short payback period. economic analysis showed the shelter had an expected payback period of five years. The farm will go to a higher productivity bracket with its processor, will qualify for growth incentives and expects more profitability from the extra stock.

“The 120 extra cows will be more profitable because all overheads are covered before that point,” Mr Rea said. The shelter will improve pasture control by reducing pugging, eliminating over-grazing, reducing feed waste and cost, and allowing speedy recovery from grazing. It will also benefit effluent control and give farmers more management options.

The shelter is also good for cows that can move freely under the cover.

Feeding can be arranged under the cover or nearby. Dr Colson described the shelter’s protection, sunlight, ventilation and deep litter as a perfect combination for cows.

“As dairy farming intensifies with farmers trying to maximise their productivity, better stand-off and housing solutions become an insurance policy against pasture

damage or having a detrimental effect upon animal health and welfare,” he said. Cows need up to 11 hours lying time per day and the soft-floored housing system has been proven in New Zealand to leave cows happy and healthy. The system helps to reduce lameness and mastitis, improve body condition, reduce bulk milk-cell count and protect cows from extreme weather. “From what Simon and I witnessed in New Zealand, these clear-roofed, deep–litter shelters provide a flexible yet robust solution to the problem of providing affordable temporary cow housing.

They fit very well into a pasture-based production system,” Dr Colson said.

The shelters are also an excellent calf housing option. Mr Rea said the

shelter was creating a lot of interest. “Farmers who have seen it are very impressed,” he said. wDairy Shelters Australia will hold an open day by the Rea farm at 89 NaringalPanmure Road Panmure on August 12 from 11am-2.30pm.

SPORT PROFILE Young South East star on the rise by Peter Argent The youngest of three brothers from Mount Gambier, Will Somerfield regularly drives a golf ball more than 300 metres. That statistic alone puts him in the same category as the best 15 percent of the professional golfers on tours around the word, but the 22-year-old knows he needs consistency of performance at national events over the next 12-18 months to achieve his dream of being a pro. In many ways it has been a meteoric rise for Somerfield, since he started playing golf as a 14 year-old. “I’m a born and bred Mount Gambier lad,” Somerfield said. “I went to school at St Martins Lutheran College and the golf course was walking distance from our family home.

“Before I was 14 I was playing soccer and cricket; I was a scratch golfer by the time I was 16.

“My best score around Mount Gambier is a seven under par, 64, when the course was a par 71.

“I would play plenty of golf with (second sibling) Adam and Dad (Terry) when I was younger; nearly every day.

“When I turned 16 Dad gave the game away, to take me to tournaments and caddie for me.”

Currently a member of the prestigious Kooyonga Golf Club on the sand belt, in the western suburbs of Adelaide, he is playing to a handicap of plus four.

To the uninitiated that means to play to his handicap on a par 72 course, Somerfield needs to shoot a four under total of 68. Just to get an perspective

of his undoubled talent, Somerfield produced a career best 63 around Kooyonga in 2013 and during the 2014 calendar year had no less than five “holes in one”. Yes that right – three “aces” on the par three seventh, and one each at 14 and 15 on the testing Kooyonga layout. Somerfield first came under serious notice by the national golfing hierarchy when he won the 2011 Junior Masters evert at the Royal Adelaide course. Previous winners of

this national junior event have included our countries highest ranked golfer Adam Scott, Jason Day and Marc Leishman, who recently performed admirably in the British Open. “After I finished year 12 I moved to Adelaide that November (2011), basically to further my golfing aspirations,” Somerfield said. “I have been playing Simpson Cup for Kooyonga since.

“This match play competition against other leading Adelaide Club is the

highlight of club golf in the State.

“We have played in the final in each of the last four years.

“Back in ’12 we lost to Tea Tree Gully 4 and 3, won against Grange in 2013, 5 and 2.

“Last year we lost a thriller to Grange 4 and 3, so this year we were looking for a bit of pay back.

“We won all our first four games in this year’s final, so they immediately halved to three contests that were still on the

course, giving us a 5 and a half to 1 and a half win.”

Other accolades Somerfield has enjoyed included a pair of South East Open championship victories in 2012 and 2013, along with being captain of the SA junior team in in 2011. He has also played in the State men’s team over the past two years.

Somerfield has engaged the services of coach Matt Liebeknecht to hopefully propel his game to the next level.

“For me it is about improving my chipping and wedge play, along with my mental preparation,” Somerfield said. “While playing, I want to be less ‘results driven’ and focus on the processes while playing.” The opportunity of travelling the world and play golf for a living is on the doorstep with continued hard work for this talented Mount Gambier sporting export.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY The voices in my head... by Robbie Tansel Every now and then I like to give you a little view of what it’s like living inside my head. I think it helps in many ways. I think sometimes we can think that

we’re the only one who is a little unusual. If we don’t think we’re unusual, we might think that bizarre member of our family is the only weirdo.

When you see that I’m like this it might help you to understand that your family member could be worse and maybe you’re not such a freak. I am a creature of habit. I wouldn’t say I’m obsessive compulsive (I’ve got a feeling that a person who is obsessive compulsive probably wouldn’t say they are anyway.) I’ve also been told that I don’t tick enough boxes to be on the autism spectrum so I can’t use that as an excuse for my quirkiness. But I do feel more comfortable when things in my life are as they should be. Let me give you an example.

I like to have my books organised in alphabetical order of author. I also like to have my CDs organised in alphabetical order of artist. Likewise I insist on having my DVDs organised in alphabetical order of title. Let’s not dwell on the fact that CDs and DVDs are old technology. I just like these parts of my life to be ordered and if they’re not it will result in a level of irritation. Recently one of the areas of my life that I am particular about was out of balance and it left me highly strung. Here’s what happened. On a daily basis, my pockets will contain

the following items: my wallet, a set of keys to my workplace, a set of keys for my car and home, the bag I keep my sunglasses in (my sunglasses are generally on my face, even in the middle of Winter but the bag is there just in case I do want to take them off or for cleaning the glasses), my mobile phone, and two four coloured pens. One of my four coloured pens is the traditional blue, red, black, green variety, which we’ll call the classic version. My other four colour pen is the purple, light blue, pink, and light green type, which we’ll refer to as the funky version. I feel unease if I don’t have all of these items in my pockets. Years ago my friends suggested to me that I would find it very difficult to find a young lady friend with my bulging pockets. I was of the opinion that young ladies liked bulging pants but apparently the bulges were in the wrong places.

Even with this warning, I wasn’t prepared to change my pocket organisation as I needed all of those items. When arriving at work and finding that I’ve forgotten any of my pocket items, I have been known to call Donna and request that she deliver the item to my workplace. She doesn’t even argue anymore as she knows the state I will return to her in at the end of the day if she doesn’t just bring it. Of the items in my pockets, the one that I will miss most if it’s not there is one of my four coloured pens. I particularly like to use green on my classic pen, or any of the colours on my funky pen whilst at work. Last week I misplaced my funky pen. I hate losing things in general. I particularly dislike losing one of my pens before I have used up the ink.

It’s hard to describe how much it winds me up knowing that I have lost my pen and it still had ink in it. It’s ridiculous, I know but this is the sort of person you’re dealing with. You can only picture my relief when I found the pen today, a week later.

It had fallen down the side of my car seat. For you Biblical scholars out there, it was probably a bit like the Parable of the Lost Sheep. For those less Biblical, it was a bit like when you’ve lost something that’s really important to you and you find it again.

I know. I overthink things. Understand.

There are lots of people like me out there that you have to deal with on a daily basis. No wonder life is so damn frustrating these days!

Buttermilk pancackes with honeycomb butter 300g (2 cups) plain flour 3 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tbs caster sugar 2 eggs 500ml (2 cups) buttermilk 60g butter, melted Butter, extra, to grease Pure maple syrup, to serve Honeycomb butter 150g butter, at room temperature 15g plain honeycomb, finely chopped Method Preheat the oven to 160°C/140°C fan forced. Sift the flour, baking powder and bicarb into a large bowl.

Stir in the sugar. Make a well in the centre. Add the egg and buttermilk.

Use a balloon whisk to whisk until

almost combined. Whisk in the butter, taking care not to overbeat.

(You may still have lumps of flour remaining). Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat.

Grease with extra butter. Pour 80ml (1/3 cup) of the batter into the pan.

Cook for 3 minutes or until bubbles appear on the surface. Turn and cook for 2 minutes or until golden.

Transfer to a baking tray. Cover loosely with foil and place in the oven to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining batter to make 10 pancakes. For honeycomb butter, use electric beaters to beat the butter in a bowl until pale and fluffy.

Stir in the honeycomb. Stack the pancakes on serving plates and top with dollops of whipped butter.

Drizzle with maple syrup.

LOCAL Pioneers Hall of Fame from page 3 The first man to top Cook’s 199 game mark was Jason Joynes and Big J was one of the other names, you just assumed would be part of this inaugural list of inductees. A club life member, there is no more enduring image of the 2003 South Conference champion ship victory than the sight of Joynes up the ladder and cutting down the net – his joy was palpable. “ It was such a special moment for the people of Mount Gambier and to know that it was jam packed on court one and there were people out on court three watching the big screen and then they all just came into court one to celebrate – it was amazing,” Big J said. “To see all the happy faces, it was impossible not to feel great – to see what it meant for Mount Gambier

to win a championships after all those years.” Joynes had two stints as a Pioneer, punctuated by a National Basketball League career, before he racked up a then club record 267 games. And it wasn’t just the on court success that means he has a strong connection to Mount Gambier. It’s the friends he and his family made.

“Once you break into Mount Gambier everyone knows you for life,” Big J said.

“People I’ve known over that nine, ten year period have stayed a part of my life and always will be.”

The fifth inductee was import turned local, Jason Sedlock – more substance than style, Sedlock always left everything out on the court, whether it was scrimmaging at training or fighting for silverware at the business end of

the season. Arguably the most loved import to ever call the Icehouse home, Sedlock was co-captain of the 2003 dual championship winning team and went on to coach his beloved Pioneers.

Chivo Anderson is the man the club can thank for helping secure Sedlock as Pioneer. “Chivo had played at the University of Portland which was in our league and we played at the same time so we knew each other,” Sedlock said.

“I caught up with him at the camp, because some of the players were set to play some of the colleges and he told me he had a great experience at Mount Gambier.” The camp he referred to was SEABL talent identification camp and John Burns was there and offered the Californian a contract. Little did he know that he would go on to become

the club’s games record holder with 278 games. No doubt, Sedlock stayed so long because he loved his team mates and his club, he felt at home in Mount Gambier and, of course, he fell in love – marrying local Sally Sims, who must take some credit for keeping the hard working tall at the Icehouse.

The final Hall of Fame spot went to the X factor – triple Allan Scott Medallist Jamie Holmes. Holmes knew Sedlock from Santa Clara and played on US tours with some of the Pioneers players and his arrival seemed to fill everyone at the club with confidence that 2003 would be their year. “It might sound arrogant and cocky but I felt it from the beginning of the year, right from preseason,” Sedlock said. “It’s very easy with 20/20 hindsight to say that but it was like that – with Jamie (Holmes) coming in and most of us knowing him and knowing what we were getting we knew he was just the last piece of the puzzle.” And Sedlock wasn’t the only one to laud his great mate. “It’s always critical in any basketball team to get the right American and we did (in 2003),” Joynes said. “His personality and the way he got on with everybody was crucial and of course, he had talent, he had an all round game. So many Americans come in and play for themselves and there were Americans I played with that had more talent than Jamie (Holmes) but he wanted to win it and was a team man.” Holmes took little convincing to become a part of the Pioneers program.. “Knowing the

guys and what they had told me about the competition, I was pretty keen to come to Australia,” Holmes said. “And you want to play somewhere where you can make a real difference.” And make a difference he did, winning the grand final MVP in the South Conference decider and being named, alongside his co-captain Damien Anderson in the 2003 SEABL South Conference All Star Five. Consistently the side’s leading scorer, Holmes’ laconic style and attitude belied a fierce competitive spirit. “I came here to help the guys win a championship and anything less would have been hugely disappointing,” he said.

“It would also have been disappointing for the fans – once you move here and realise how much the community gets behind this team, you just realised it was about more than your team mates, it was about Mount Gambier as a whole.” The Pioneers gala event was emceed by arguably the most popular Pioneer of all time – Sam Fotu, another member of the 2003 championship team – and was a memorable celebration of the club and its rich history. The club is set to add new inductees to the Hall of Fame every second year so no doubt names like Andre Le Fleur, Damien Anderson, Mark Lampshire, Terry Walters and Dallas Jeffree will be added in the future.

Juggling act for Hamilton artist

Even the students know how silly it sounds when they complain about just how wet it was at the 100th anniversary dawn service at Gallipoli.

Yes, they got up at 2.30am in the morning to leave the hotel at 3am for the hour and half bus ride to the 5.30am service at Villers-Bretonneux, and yes, some didn’t even have raincoats but having spent time on battlefields and in military cemeteries where tour guides personalise the stories of World War I, the St Martins Lutheran College contingent knew they still had it pretty good. The 27 strong group including students, staff and parents knew they were headed on a trip of a lifetime but returned more entrenched in the ANZAC story than ever before, touched emotionally and educated beyond their wildest dreams about the stories of which much of Australia’s identity is built. The opportunity to head to Gallipoli for the 100th anniversary commemorations was made possible by Horizons Education Tour, an organisation that facilitates overseas student tours, and the Mount Gambier based school opened up the trip to Year 9 students and above. “That was the students that had studied Gallipoli and we thought they would get the most out of it,” teacher Joanne Billows said.

While the focus was heavily on Belgium, France and Turkey and the conflicts of World War 1, the students did start the 18 day journey with visits to Rome, London and Paris,

Jasmine Mansbridge has a lot on her plate at the moment as she unveils her seventh solo exhibition at the Hamilton Art Gallery in August. The mother of five, where the youngest is less than 12 months old, admits it is a juggling act but it’s an act at which she is getting proficient. “I had my eldest daughter when I was 18 so I have been juggling my art and kids basically all my life,” Jasmine said.

Painting for this Hamilton exhibition has been a special time for Jasmine.

“I have really enjoyed painting for it and painting freely, not having the pressure of it’s a commercial gallery and you have to make money,” she said. “I’ve had free rein over the whole thing.” The work is still for sale at the Hamilton Art Gallery but the financial pressure of a commercial gallery is certainly a welcome absentee from her seventh solo effort. There is a sense of excitement for Jasmine, exhibiting at her home gallery.

“Excitement and relief,” she said.

“Relief that the work has been done.”

And with a young baby on her hip, that

meaning the Crown Jewels, the stage show Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and the London Eye were all on the itinerary. “It was good to have that opportunity just to relax and see some of the sights of Europe before we went into the really intense parts of all the war history and the stories we would be told when we went to the Western Front,” Year 12 student Bronson Pfeiler said. And Bronson agreed. “It’s not every day you can be a part of a 100th anniversary and I had talked about it with a couple of mates and we all wanted to go together.” In the end, it became a father-son pilgrimage when Bronson’s father, Paul, decided he wanted to be part of the Gallipoli experience. “In the end, it has been a great experience for us to share before I head off to further study and building my career,” he said.

Finishing up work for an exhibition is challenging at the best of times but when you are sleep deprived it adds a whole new dimension.

“Mind you, now that I’m finished, I feel a real void that painting leaves,” she said. “I will definitely be taking up a new opportunity some time soon.” Jasmine has also had the help of her amazing motherin-law for those times where she’s needed to paint and her three year old has needed to be entertained. ‘Most of my work is done at night but when I really need some head space she’s been fantastic,” Jasmine said. Jasmine has always been a creative person and painting quickly became her outlet of choice.

With a daughter to look after as an 18 year old, she had a different lifestyle to most of her friends.

“I was living in the Northern Territory and I just started painting,” she said. “No matter what other stuff is going on, painting always gives me pleasure.

It’s very restorative, very meditative.” And even now, as she was preparing for this exhibition, painting gave Jasmine that same feeling. “I had to be very disciplined about going and painting and sometimes it was difficult but once I was out there and painting I was fine,” she said. “It’s like I get a second wind when I’m painting.”

BASKETBALL Winning run comes to an end as Pioneers launch Hall of Fame The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers winning run has come to an end courtesy of a nail biting one point loss to East Conference rival Geelong. The Pionees made a charge in the final quarter to reel in the 11 point deficit but fell agonisingly short. Missing classy ball handler and sharp shooter Tom Daly, the Pioneers lacked the spark that had seen them conjure a 17 game winning streak. Still clearly sitting atop the South Conference standings, the boys were able to shake off that disappointment the following night when the club inducted the first six members to its newly established Hall of Fame ast a gala presentation dinner.

Motor Fundraiser nets almost $5000 The inaugural Moto Classica, held at Mount gambier’s City Hall last month, raised almost $5000 for Cancer Council SA.
