The SEA Change Portland Exercise Right Week will kick off with a special night on May 26 that will feature an interactive forum, the launch of a new newsletter, information about local exercise-focused businesses and a show bag of giveaways. Active Health Portland and Portland District HealthAccredited Exercise Physiologist, Shae Johnson, said the promotion was timely with new Australian Bureau of Statistics data analysed by the Heart Foundation showing 21.2 per cent of southwest Victorian people are obese and 58.3 per cent too inactive. “The event asks us a very important question, are we in fact exercising right?” Ms Johnson said. “We will look at what people think might be right for themselves and separate the fact from the fiction in the exercise world,” she said.

The free forum will be at the Portland Fawthrop Community Centre from 6.30-8pm. Ms Johnson will present an interactive `exercise mythbusters’ forum to debunk some claims about exercise.

“For example if people have exercised they might think they can sit for an extra hour, but that negates their good work,” she said. The interactive forum will give advice and get people out of their chairs and active.

It will also outline what people with chronic diseases can do to help themselves. “We will talk about what you can do, not what

you can’t do,” Ms Johnson said. During the night a new `Exercise Right Portland’ newsletter will be launched. The newsletter will involve the latest exercise research to reduce the misunderstanding of what is best for exercise prescription, ideas on how to stay active and healthy, and what is happening in the community. Stalls of local exercise-focused businesses will provide information about what they can provide to keep Portland and surrounds active and healthy. These will include YMCA, Active Health Portland, Portland District Health, PT @ Home and SNAP Fitness.

The first 50 people attending will receive a show bag with items donated by Conni, Almonds Australia, Exercise and Sports Science Australia and Wannon Water.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Self imposed torture... by Robbie Tansel As some of my more regular readers will remember, I started regularly jogging as a way of exercising in about October last year. There were several factors motivating me to get moving. I was planning on making my second attempt at

the Blue Lake Fun Run and wanted to be in better shape to make it a little easier. I was carrying a little too much weight and also wanted to start exercising to feel a little more energetic. Having a little child in my life also motivated me in wanting to be healthier. My initial plan was to jog three mornings a week. I’d been finding reasons not to exercise regularly for years, one of the main ones being a lack of time. I decided to solve this problem by getting out of bed half an hour earlier, sacrificing a little sleep and making this my exercise time. If I left it to the afternoon or evening, I just knew I’d find something else I’d rather do than go running. In all honesty, I probably didn’t expect to have the self-discipline to keep myself to this training schedule. The best case scenario involved me being a little bit fitter by the time of the fun run and then giving up on jogging forever. I wasn’t in great shape,

but I wasn’t in terrible shape either. I certainly wasn’t of a fitness level where I could jog the 6.8 kilometres of the Blue Lake Fun Run without doing some walking.

My first practice jog was 2.6 kilometres and took me just over 16 minutes. I didn’t manage to jog for the whole distance, probably spending about a third of the journey walking to get my breath back.

A pretty underwhelming performance, you’d have to say. There was significant soreness for the rest of the day, but I dragged myself out of bed the next morning and struggled around again. With added soreness the same distance took me a little longer making it even less impressive. Each week I extended the distance of my run slightly hoping that it might improve my fitness. On my sixth run I travelled 3.3 kilometres in about 20 minutes and covered it without having to walk at all! Still not great pace but at least I’d done it without walking. From there I managed to cover gradually expanding distances without having to walk in times that slowly improved.

Most amazingly I kept to my three runs a week schedule without ever deciding to just stay in bed. This has been despite the fact that at no point have I found jogging enjoyable. Most people would probably say, “Why keep doing it if you’re not enjoying it at all?” Essentially it has just been a case of feeling like I have to do it. I needed to get healthier and I wasn’t going to make myself do it or get results in any other way. Speaking of results, I’ve been able to get some positive ones. I’ve lost several kilograms that I had been carrying and hoping to lose for about 10 years as well as changing my body shape a little. My general fitness and speed over my run has improved significantly. Trust me though, it hasn’t been easy at all. Every morning involves me looking for reasons to stay in bed and excuses for why I shouldn’t go for a run. Every morning. cont. page 26

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Self imposed torture... by Robbie Tansel from page 24 The positive of that is that I’ve never given in to the voice in my head…except for that time it said to kill and kill again. That wasn’t to do with running though.

Getting out of bed has gotten harder and harder as it has gotten darker and

colder at 6am, but I’ve still managed to make myself walk out the front door. I don’t think the pain and discomfort has changed dramatically although I’ve probably gotten used to it and I now know I can cope with it. While my body is screaming to stop, I know that my brain which is not smashing against the pavement can convince my legs to keep moving. This morning I had this discussion in my head as I arrived out the front of my house. “At least if I have a heart attack now, I’m right by my house so Donna might be able to save me.” Another voice in my head then said, “Actually this probably isn’t a great place to have a heart attack. You live in a dead end street which has minimal traffic. You’re likely to be laying out the front of your house for fifteen minutes before Donna starts wondering what’s taking you so long or notices you slowly dying. That should give you a pretty good indication of my state of mind throughout my run. Possibly the worst part of my run is after reaching home. Sure, I get a sense of satisfaction for getting it done, but I’m sick to death of eating my breakfast with large amounts of sweat dripping into my cereal bowl. I guess drinking my own sweat is a pretty environmentally friendly way of replenishing my fluids. One of the reasons for sharing this is to say, anyone can do it if they really want. I’m no athlete. Anyone can run, or even start with walking if necessary. You don’t need money or special equipment. Even if you don’t like it you can still make yourself do it and see the results. You might not enjoy it, but if you stick at it, it’ll probably do you some good. Calves to shine light on dairy careers Calves are helping to shine a light on dairy industry careers through Dairy Australia’s innovative school program, Cows Create Careers – Farm Module.

Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a National Centre for Dairy Education program funded by Dairy Australia and industry sponsors. Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a six-week program that aims to increase the awareness of dairy industry careers in a very hands-on way. Secondary students are educated by rearing two three-week-old calves at school and the school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for years 7 and 8 and years 9 to 11, at no cost. This year, seven schools in the Limestone Coast region will participate in the program including Allendale East Area School, Compton Primary School, Grant High School, Kingston Community School, Kongorong Primary School, Lucindale Area School and Millicent

High School. Since 2006 Dairy Australia has worked with thousands of students, teachers, farmers, industry advocates and communities through its investment into Cows Create Careers – Farm Module. Dairy Australia’s Industry Capability Program Manager, Tracy Lloyd, said the program started in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools.

With support from Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors, the program has now grown to over 210 schools across Australia with 9,456 students completing the program in 2014. “Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a program that builds awareness of dairy industry careers – from teaching students about educational and vocational pathways, to profiling the diverse range of professional careers in the dairy industry,” said Ms. Lloyd.

“By bringing calves into schools, students have fun learning about the different skills required in the dairy industry.”

The program has gained strong support from dairy farmers and advocates across Australia. Last year alone volunteers gave 1704 hours of their time across 23 Australian dairying regions. Locally, the project is funded by DairySA and receives additional support across the State from local companies SADA Fresh, La Casa Del Formaggio, South East Vets, ABS Australia,Total Result Ag Consulting, District Council of Grant, ProviCo, Devondale Murray Goulburn & Laucke Mills. Upon completion of the program, students and teachers will be recognised at a Presentation Finale where prizes are awarded to the winning schools and students.

the valuable contribution volunteers make to the community. Volunteers attended from Community groups across the district including the Port MacDonnell Tourist Association, Tarpeena Progress Association, Baytown Group, Donovans Recreational Advisory Committee, Tarpeena Cancer Support Group, CFS, Lions Club, Op Shop, Museum, Meals on Wheels, the RSL, school, kindy and sporting groups as well as Council Volunteers.

As well as enjoying mingling at morning tea in the Port MacDonnell Community Complex Gallery, the volunteers were able to view the ‘War at Sea’ graphic display panel exhibition and the ‘Our Recent Past; the Victorian and Federation Years’ exhibition.

Roads and street upgrades, foreshore structure renewal and the Portland Youth Activity Space Stage 2 are the major capital projects highlighted as part of the budget, with Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Robert Halliday committing to maintaining services and service levels while delivering a strong capital works program. “Through productivity, innovation and streamlining our processes these outcomes can be achieved within a modest rate increase,” he said.

“Council is aware of the importance of engaging with the community to ensure that current and future needs are met.

“Our traditional commitment to conservative and strong financial management has been maintained.

“Glenelg Shire Council finances rely heavily upon maintaining a consistent level of external funding in order to deliver both existing services and service levels.

“Increases in waste management costs, driven by State Government levies and increasing compliance requirements, are significant financial imposts on our Shire.” Council proposes to increase the general rate by 1.95 per cent, which will deliver an overall rates income increase of 1 per cent in the 2015/2016 financial year. Significantly, the Commercial and Industrial rate differential of 20 per cent has been removed bringing it in line with the general rate.

Fees and charges have generally been capped at 1.95 per cent. Footpath trading permit fees have been reduced to zero, however a permit is still required. The 2015/2016 budget includes a number of new initiatives: • Technology - $69K • Tourism - $182K • Annual Business and Tourism Awards - $30K • Contribution to the South West Games - $30K The 2015/2016 budget includes $18.11M for an

extensive Works Program, with works scheduled for all major asset categories and the delivery of $14.42M in new, upgraded or renewed assets.

Some of the major projects in the 2015/2016 Capital Works include: • Roads & Streets upgrades - $6.7M • Foreshore Structure Renewal - $1.4M • Recreation Facilities Program - $108K • Portland Youth Activity Space (Stage 2) - $200K “The 2015/2016 Budget has been developed through a process of consultation and review with Council and Council staff,” Cr Halliday said.

KARATE Graduation for new students Shingokan Karate Mount Gambier recently completed a “Mini Ninja’s beginners class. Ten students (pictured right) successfully completed the course which ran over a period of 12 weeks. Students were introduced to the expectations of respect for one another, the discipline associated with the learning of a martial art and of course all the physical skills associated with the sport. The experienced female instructors really enjoyed running the course, as did the students. A game sense approach to the delivery of the program made it fun and enjoyable for all of the students. A variety of fitness activities, bag work, partner work, individual skills development and mini gladiators elimination game were all practised. It

is hoped that many of these students will now participate in the South Australian Open Karate Championships to be held in Mount Gambier on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. The next intake of juniors will commence with the second “Mini Ninja’s” course scheduled to commence on Saturday, May 23, at 9am at the 27 Percy Street dojo. Motor LOCAL MENTAL HEALTH UNIT SET FOR JUNE OPENING Mental health services in the South East are set to expand when the new Mount Gambier Integrated Mental Health Inpatient Unit opens on Monday, June 29. Acting Director, Mental Health, Strategic Operations, Nicole Jones, said the unit was originally scheduled to open in April, however this date had been revised to ensure the most appropriate staff mix is in place to treat patients. “For the first time, the South East will have a six-bed, specialist, acute mental health inpatient unit located at Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service,” Nicole Jones said. “While we have been largely successful in recruiting to the 15 new mental health positions this unit brings to the South East, there remain some key appointments to be made. This is an exciting service for the South East community, bringing a new level of mental health care to the region and enabling inpatient and community based mental health clinicians to work together as an integrated team. A regional mental health unit will mean more people can receive acute mental health care in or near their home town, reducing the need to travel to Adelaide. It will also allow those people who do require a higher level of care in a metropolitan facility to return to the South East earlier and recover with their families and friends by their side.”

Still more education needed for young drivers Young drivers are unaware of the impacts that their unsafe driving behaviours could have on other road users, a recent RAA study has found.

In a survey of more than 3500 South Australian high school students, one in five students said if they drive unsafely, their actions would only affect them. RAA General Manager Public Affairs, Penny Gale said while these students aren’t the majority, it’s still concerning to hear such selfcentred behaviours exist amongst learner drivers. “Learning to drive isn’t just about building a certain set of skills to be able to drive a car; it’s also about having the right attitude each time you get behind the wheel,” said Ms Gale. “It’s disappointing to hear almost 20 per cent of the students we surveyed thought their actions would only affect themselves.” The survey also found that 26 per cent of students thought their friends would drive recklessly once they’re no longer supervised, with half suggesting their friends would do so simply to show off. “It’s important to teach young drivers that their attitude on the road is just as important as the skills they learn to manoeuvre a vehicle,” said Ms Gale. At RAA’s annual road trauma awareness event Street Smart High, about 7000 high school students from 64 schools got to see just how one mistake on the road can cause a chain reaction. “The crash scenario presented at

the event shows students how one mistake doesn’t only affect the driver, it also hurts his passengers, other road users, as well as all of their family and friends,” said Ms Gale. Motor Accident Commission (MAC) General Manager Road Safety Michael Cornish said MAC was pleased to be an Event Partner, given the significant impact road trauma had on many young South Australians. “Last year in SA, people aged 16-24 represented 16% of all road crash fatalities and 25% of all serious

injuries, even though this age group make up 13% of licensed drivers and 12% of the total state population,” Mr Cornish said. “Street Smart High is an effective way to share some profound road safety stories with young people and encourage them to make smart decisions on the road.” Street Smart is the largest event of its kind in South Australia. Now in its sixth year, the event is held across two days, allowing more students from more schools to attend each year.
