COVER Transforming your look for 20 years If you had told eight year old Janene Lightbody she would live in Mount Gambier all her life and would own a successful and popular hairdressing business, she probably wouldn’t have believed you, especially if you told her it was a venture she would build with her little brother Dean. That little girl definitely wanted to be a hairdresser, so the career path itself is not a surprise, but Janene genuinely thought she would end up in a major city. “I did think I would do my apprenticeship and get some experience and then move to Melbourne or somewhere like that,” Janene said. “But in the end there was no reason to leave – I was happy, my family was here, I had great friends and I had my own business which I loved running.” And so last month, Salon 7 celebrated 20 years in business with Janene Lightbody at the helm but she certainly wasn’t the only familiar face at the celebrations. Her brother Dean returned from Melbourne to celebrate the business success story that he spent a decade helping build. “When we decided to take on Salon 7 together it wasn’t a hard decision at all,” Janene said. “There was no hesitation, we decided really quickly that it was something we wanted to do together and that it would work.” And it did. Both stylists completed their training at Country Lady and then the stars aligned just as Dean was finishing his apprenticeship. “I was approached to take over Salon 7 and so Dean got signed off on his apprenticeship early and we started running the salon ourselves,” Janene said. The other piece of the puzzle in the early years was Kelly Elshaug. She has been part of the Salon 7 family since day one and while her hours have fluctuated over the years as she had a family, she has been a constant for clients. In fact long serving employees are the story of the business, which at its height employed 10 people – it currently employs eight and is looking to put on an apprentice. Caroline Michell has been with Salon 7 for 19 years, as has Belinda Scott. “I have been very lucky because my staff has been loyal and they are all so hard working, as well as amazing at their jobs,” Janene said. Andrea Stafford has clocked up 15 years and Robyn Nicholson, has been part of the team for 12 years. Janene also has a new generation of potentially long serving team members just starting out, with Lili Rogers McKenzie, who has just completed her apprenticeship and been with Janene for four years, and Bailey Watsell, who is four years into her

Salon 7 experience. And the loyal staff has also been reflected in the loyal clientele. “Just the other day I was working in the salon and we had three generations of one family in - grandma, mum and the kids,” Janene said. “It makes you feel old but also proud that there are people who have been coming to you for 20 years and now their kids and their kids’ kids want to have their hair done here.” There is one other significant relationship that has grown during Janene’s 20 years as the head of Salon 7 – her working relationship with haircare company L’Oreal. “I’ve been with L’Oreal from the start,” Janene said. “That’s been another association that has lasted the test of time.” And while Janene never moved away from Mount Gambier, that association with L’Oreal has seen her travel the world to conferences, expos and the like. She has seen London, Paris and the United States, as L’Oreal has opened her eyes not just to the world but to the latest trends in hairdressing, which she has then been able to bring back to her staff and clients. GHD and Eleven and the other long standing suppliers with which Janene has built a strong working relationship. Of course, aside from Dean heading to Melbourne to pursue his fitness career 10 years ago, the other major change happened in the past 12 months when the salon was forced to relocate from its original home in the former Fidler & Webb complex. “It was really emotional for me to leave that salon,” Janene said. “It was crazy really because where we are now has more space, great parking but it was tough to leave somewhere I had been for 19 years.” Salon 7 now calls 20 Ferrers Street home, sitting snugly between Tailor Made Travel Mount Gambier and the Mount Gambier Community RSL. In the end, the move was about 400metres up Ferrers Street – it was cutting the emotional ties that was the tough part. Twenty years in the same job, let alone the same industry, is becoming the exception rather than the rule, but for Janene, Salon 7 has become like her extended family and the industry still holds the same appeal today that it did to that little girl doing her dolls hair and the teenager cutting her little brother’s mullet off. “I love the transformation - the way someone comes in to see you and whether it’s a blowdry or a complete restyle, cut and colour, they leave feeling good about themselves,” Janene said. “It really is so rewarding to see how happy you can make someone just by doing your job well.”

The Virtual Gastric Band is a remarkable weight loss program. We use hypnosis to condition the sub-conscious mind into believing that a band has been placed around the top of the stomach in order to create a small pouch, thus reducing the amount of food one needs in order to feel full. The Virtual Gastric Band is for people who want to lose weight, but don’t want to go through a physical operation. The Virtual Gastric Band is available at a fraction of the cost and has comparable results.

Results to date We have documented the progress of the first 350 people who completed all four sessions of The Virtual Gastric Band Program in our clinics.

THE

VIRTUAL GASTRIC BAND A Natural, Safe, Effective Weight Loss Program

Of those 350 people who completed all four 4 sessions of the program, 345 people or 98.5% achieved a positive result. The total combined weight loss at the completion of the program was an impressive 1,680 kilos, and the total number of centimetres lost was a remarkable 6,150 cm. That equates to an average weight loss of 4.79 kg per person and an average loss of 16cm per person, after just 4 weeks. Of course, these figures are just average figures. Some people lost more than the average and some people lost less than the average. The weight loss journey has commenced for these people and no doubt their weight loss will continue as The Virtual Gastric Band continues to work for them.

THE VIRTUAL GASTRIC BAND PROGRAM WILL BE RUN IN MOUNT GAMBIER AND IN NARACOORTE DURING OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014.

As we age we tend to lose volume in the mid part of the face that tends to appear as flattening of the cheekbones and hollowing of the cheeks. This will also cause lines or folds at the sides of the nose and sides of the mouth (nasolabial and marionette lines). The liquid facelift uses a product called Voluma to add fullness to the cheeks and mid part of the face helping to lift the cheek area and soften folds in the lower part of the face. Dr. Emma Nolan (pictured right) of Odyssey Vein Clinic is pleased to announce that she is now offering the liquid facelift in Mount Gambier. She comments ‘Voluma is a newer variety of filler that targets the cause of ageing in the lower face – volume loss. This product is injected into the cheek area and produces instant results. The treatment takes about half an hour with no real downtime. One of the advantages with this product is that it also lasts for about 2 years.’ Dr. Nolan visits Mount Gambier every 4-5 weeks and also offers

LOCAL Top business advocate to headline business awards After almost 20 years, since beginning the event in the early 1990s, the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce is holding the 2014 Outstanding Business Awards night once again. Following the last six months of organising the event, the gala night will be held on October 10 at The Barn. Anyone involved within the business industry is invited to attend, with guest speaker Kate Carnell giving plenty to offer. Ms Carnell is the new chief executive officer of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, taking on the role in May this year. At the very beginning of her career she was a pharmacist, where she spent 20 years owning and managing pharmacies. From there she eventually became the National Vice-President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia. Since then, she has been the CEO of beyondblue for two years, also spending four years prior to that as CEO of the Australian Food and Grocery Service. Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce president Lynette Martin was ecstatic at having secured Ms Carnell for the chamber of commerce awards night. Mrs Martin had been extremely impressed after listening to Ms Carnell speak at a beyondblue conference earlier this year. Afterwards, Mrs Martin had got in contact with Ms Carnell’s personal assistant, and after a few simple emails had organised for

her to be the guest speaker for this local community event. The Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards is a perfect way to celebrate the work of local businesses in the community, and to express the appreciation we have for them. With more than 50 businesses being nominated for an award in any of the seven categories, and more than 20 employees that were both nominated and then invited for a submission, it’s clear our community is proud with what these local organisations are doing. Tickets go on sale on September 8 at Chapman’s Newsagency, for $48 per person, which includes dinner on the night. This is the perfect opportunity for people to network with other individuals in the business industry, and to gain plenty of knowledge from the wonderful guest speaker - Kate Carnell.

LOCAL The Portland community can play an important part in addressing local drug issues, according to one of Australia’s leading drug information experts. Head of Information and Research at the Australian Drug Foundation, Julie Rae, will address a public drugs forum in Portland on September 11 and says that engaging and informing the community is a vital part of tackling drug and alcohol problems. “We know that if the community is engaged and wants to do something we can look at things like increasing protective factors for those who are most at risk,” Ms Rae said. “The community can do a lot – these are all our issues and we need to be working together to solve them.” Ms Rae said communities and families need to support people who have drug and alcohol issues and set the right behavioural expectations. “Being informed helps us to know who is at greater risk of using illicit drugs or alcohol at harmful levels. We need to understand why people take drugs and look at what prevention measures we can put in place to delay that for as long as possible.” Ms Rae said it was important that young people stay in school for as long as possible or find employment or other ways of being engaged. She encouraged people to join the Good Sports Club program where sporting clubs have appropriate measures and management, especially around alcohol and illicit drugs. Under that program there has been a 30 per cent reduction in binge drinking. “We also work with parents and stress the influence parents have in setting behavioural expectations with their children,” Ms Rae said. The September 11 `Breaking the Ice’ Portland community forum on drug use is giving local people an opportunity to hear the latest advice on ice and other drug and alcohol issues. It is being held at the Portland Golf Club from 7pm-9.30pm.

To mark this special occasion, local composer Dylan Edge has written a new work called Hamilton Overture which will be given its premiere performance at the orchestra’s forthcoming concert. In addition, there will be music by Mozart and Fauré , arias from La Traviata and the Marriage of Figaro, dance items from Swan Lake, themes from The Vicar of Dibley and Schindler’s List as well as many other items. The orchestra is conducted by Angus Christie (pictured) who studied at the Vienna Conservatorium with Reinhard Schwarz and later at the Kodaly Institute in Hungary. Angus has always made a point of collaborating with local groups; this year, the Hamilton Singers, Cameron Dance School, The Hamilton and Alexandra College Festival Singers and the Clocktower Belles will all contribute to the gala performance. The acclaimed baritone, Manfred Pohlenz, is Guest Soloist and will perform arias by Mozart and Verdi. He has sung a number of principal roles since studying at the prestigious Julliard School of Music in New York including roles with Opera Queensland, Princeton Opera, USA and Melbourne Opera. Many local musicians will perform solo items, providing variety and entertainment for this anniversary concert. Patrons are advised to book early as

Women in Innovation and Technology SA (WITSA), in collaboration with News Corp Australia, has announced the finalists in the Women in Innovation Awards which aims to provide a showcase for the State’s best female innovators. Penola based Hello Friday’s co-director, Simone Kain, has been selected as one of the successful finalists. Backed by the Office for Women and Department of State Development, the awards are set to illuminate female innovation. Simone has been singled out as a finalist stage for the innovative work that she has completed thus far, along side her business partner Ben Hood, in regards to helping to reach out to children and teach them about farming and food & fibre production. In July, Hello Friday released Australia’s first children’s farming story App on the iTunes market. In only a few hours the character’s popularity shone through with national and international sales ranking George first in App book sales and ninth overall on the iPhone for App sales. It has also been welcomed by many national agricultural bodies. A survey conducted with school students by the Australian Council of Educational Research in 2012 revealed that 75% of Australian year 6 students believed cotton socks came from animals and 45% could not identify that everyday lunchbox items such as a banana, bread or cheese originated from farms. The lack of knowledge about farming

practices and food & fibre production, coupled with the decline of people taking up farming as a career (the ABS reported a decline over 30 years to 2011 of 106,200 farmers (40%), equating to an average of 294 fewer farmers every month over that period) and the increased requirement of food to feed Australia and the world (after catering for the needs of the Australian population, 60% of Australia’s farm produce was exported in 2009, helping feed approximately 40 million people outside Australia each day. By 2050, the UN has predicted that food production worldwide will need to increase by 70% which could cause serious implications for Australia and the world’s future in terms of food security. “The people who will be solving these issues are either currently in school or yet to be born,” Simone said. “George the Farmer fills a void in the worldwide market for a character whose primary focus is on educating both rural and city children about farm practices as well as food & fibre production in a fun way, primarily through digital channels that they can relate to. Providing education for children about farming to support primary industries, not only for their own knowledge but to consider farming as a worthy career choice will help address the lack of new entrants entering the supply chain.” George has been welcomed by the Primary Industries Education Fund as a worthy educational tool for children. The Honourable Barnaby Joyce MP, Minister for Agriculture, wrote in a personal letter to Simonesaying that George the Farmer will “help young children better understand life on an Australian farm and help raise the profile of farming in a positive way.” The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Adelaide on September 17, attended by Ministers Gago and Close.

The Japanese attack on Broome is the second most deadly air raid on Australia soil in our history and yet it’s almost entirely overlooked. On 3 March 1942, nine Japanese Zero planes strafed the small town planning to destroy the aerodrome and American planes. With no notice, the townsfolk could only put up minimal opposition and in an attack that lasted only an hour, almost 100 men, women and children lost their lives. The Ghosts of Roebuck Bay tells the story of this tragedy, shining light on a story that has slipped through the cracks of history.

ADVERTORIAL I Gardenarium Spring has.......almost sprung by Calum Haygarth Spring has sprung....well, almost Spring has sprung, albeit momentarily. As I write this the sun is shining even though the nights are crisp, verging on frosts still. This combination of weather triggers plants in to life, as well as dormant bulbs and tubers. It is wonderful to have the temperatures rising and a bit more sunshine has been welcomed by most gardeners. Now is the absolute last chance to plant bare rooted trees, shrubs and fruit trees and roses, as the buds are bursting into life on most deciduous trees and roses in the past week. The staff at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Roses have been madly potting for the past month or so in readiness for spring and summer. We have some amazing deals on the ever popular ornamental pears, Claret Ash, the ever popular and stunning Golden Elm, London plane trees plus mop top trees at ridiculous prices, which are great for formal gardens. A whole host of fruit trees including peaches, nectarines, 2014 new release dwarf Angel peach plus figs and mulberries and, of course, citrus trees. Spring is the best time to plant citrus trees and with $10 off advanced and extra large grade trees, the time has never been better. With the expansion of the advanced tree section again this spring, this will mean even more stock than ever will be on site and in

larger numbers, saving us time bringing stock in from our growing facility. The expansion will allow homeowners mainly, the chance to browse an even broader range of trees which can be purchased straight away, although landscapers, councils and developers will benefit too from the added stock held. At present we have five grades of trees from advanced right through to semi mature in 200 litre bags, with plans to introduce more grades for everyone in every price point. The range includes deciduous, evergreen, native, fruit trees, citrus, including espaliered, as well as many eucalyptus and pittosporum varieties. In addition we will increase the number of in ground displays to show customers the ultimate size and shape that can be attained in a particular tree. Spring is the most spectacular time to look at and purchase blossom trees. Despite the wind over the past few weeks, a great deal of spectacular trees around the region have still put on their wonderful displays. Here, at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees we have nearly half price off all our bare rooted dormant weeping cherries for the next week unless sold out or they burst in to bud prior, in which case they will have to be potted up, as well as 25% off all advanced blossom trees in flower right now including many of the sought after magnolias like Black Tulip. This includes the 2013 new release flowering cherry, sister to Snow Fountains called Pink Showers, the narrower growing form of pink cherry that has taken the gardening world by storm, with its masses of flowers down the entire length of the branches to ground level. At present we have our Magnificent Magnolias festival on and the nursery is packed full of dozens of flowering magnolias in all shapes and sizes, and with 25% off for the next week, now is the time to rush in and look at these magical trees and shrubs

in full bloom. My particular favourite is Black Tulip with its deep beetroot/ burgundy cup shaped blooms that are huge and last so well. This tougher variety from New Zealand is hard to rival, but the traditional Nigra two toned varieties with darker striped outers and pure white inners are still as popular as ever (see picture in our advert). If you have not considered one then now is a good time to see an accurate flower colour, rather than going on books and labels which can be incorrect. Our range of metal animals made by orphans in Zimbabwe are also half price in the sale, this includes, large birds, such as heron and brolgas right down to the cute cats and dogs (see advert) and even the cow mailbox, just what every farm entrance needs. Spring is, of course, the time for cleaning and we are no different. With masses of new lines arriving from one of my recent buying trips, we need room. So, we are clearing a lot of ex-demo water features and fountains at less than cost. Outdoor furniture settings have been slashed to clear,

as well as pots, to make way for container loads of new fountains, pots and garden arbours. The new ranges include some amazing metal sculptures, wall art, benches and arches, along with a whole new range of outdoor furniture cementing Gardenarium as the outdoor furniture specialists in the region. With our direct purchasing and the continuing strength of the dollars our prices are set to fall again on much of our range. We also have a whole new range of Reclaimed Teak Outdoor furniture to complement the range we started a few years ago which has been hugely successful, with new dining chairs at incredibly low prices.Keep an eye out on television for our new outdoor furniture advert - you’re going to love it. So, what are you waiting for - get your trailer or ute and get on down to gardenarium and the Limestone Coast Group at 167,Bay Road (Riddoch Hwy) in Mount Gambier and grab a bargain as long as stocks last, which wont be long given the discounts.

SHE SAID WHAT...? I’m selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I’m out of control, and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best. Marilyn Monroe

Tenison Woods College’s Year 8/9 footballers have proved last year’s State title was no fluke, building on that impressive success by taking out the 2014 State Country Champion title. The talented group of footballers has just returned from Adelaide where they helped the college claim back to back titles with a resounding 38 point victory over Whyalla High School. Tenison Woods College sports coordinator Ciaran Buckley said the boys’ victory, and the claiming of successive titles, was an outstanding effort. “I couldn’t be prouder, they did a fantastic job, and were a credit to the College both on and off the sporting arena,” Mr Buckley said. Tenison Woods College had earnt their way to the grand final match after defeating Mount Gambier High School, Grant High School, Naracoorte High School and Victor Harbor High School in the local and regional rounds. The grand final was held at Woodville Oval, home of the Woodville/West Torrens Eagles, and the Tenison Woods College boys started the game well, kicking the first goal of the game. The match soon settled into an arm wrestle with both teams playing fast, physical free flowing football. It took until the second quarter for the Tenison to open up a lead and with three second quarter goals to Declan Carmody, the College went into half time with a lead 6.5 (41) to 4.1 (24). Mr Buckley said Whyalla came out strongly in the third quarter and the Tenison backline had to deal with some relentless pressure with the ball constantly delivered deep inside the defensive half, but it held strong. “It was up forward where the boys were having difficulty and a scoreless third quarter meant we trailed at three quarter time 6.5.41 to 7.4.46,” he said. “With the challenge issued to them, the boys responded in the best way possible and ran home with a wet sail outscoring their highly skilled opponents by seven goals and recording an emphatic victory and back to back state titles.” The final score was 13.8 (86) to 7.6.(48) – a win to Tenison Woods College by 38 points. Mr Buckley said the entire team played exceptionally well, but paid particular tribute to the top five players of the day. “Declan Carmody was outstanding all game with his skilful ball movement, strong marking and five goal match winning haul and was consequently named as the winner of the David Hilterbrand Medal for being best on ground,” he said. “Luke MacGregor bullied his

way to a 25 possession game and provided the team with a strong marking option up forward and Luke Bull’s tackling and defensive pressure was a highlight and he provided countless rebound from the backline. Will Stafford racked up possession after possession and his disposal was first class while Campbell Serle rounded out the top five best players with his strong marks on the last line of defence and ball usage out of the backline.” Final scoreboard Tenison Woods College 13.8 (86) Whyalla High School 7.6 (48) Goal Kickers: D Carmody 5, L MacGregor 2, W Stafford 2, A Spehr 2, W Russell 1, R Lillecrapp 1. Best Players: D Carmody, L MacGregor, L Bull, W Stafford, C Serle, A Watts, Z de Wit.

LOCAL Jam packed events calendar released

ADVERTORIAL I Squashbrook Fitness & Leisure Shape up for summer with Squashbrook’s 10 week challenge

The Greater Hamilton region will play host to a variety of events throughout the spring and summer months, ranging from traditional favourites like the Dunkeld Cup to unique events like the Victorian Jam and Chutney Challenge. Southern Grampians Shire Council has this week released the Greater Hamilton Spring/Summer Events Guide 2014/15. Council supports events because they are great opportunities to generate tourist visitation to the region, and also a great way for locals to show visitors the wonderful lifestyle on offer across our region. A few of the major highlights of the Spring/Summer calendar include The Australian Pedal Car Grand Prix held October 4, the Chameleon Arts Collective Night of Roving Music in Balmoral October 11, The Discover Dunkeld week-end October 17 – 19, Dunkeld Cup November 15, Laternenfest Tarrington November 28 and the St Mary’s Christmas Expo and parade in Hamilton December 6. The Greater Hamilton Events Guide also features a variety of markets, major sporting tournaments and community activities to be held at venues across the Shire. Details of upcoming exhibitions and performances to be held at the Hamilton Art Gallery and Hamilton Performing Arts Centre are also included. Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Albert Calvano said council was pleased to present another bumper events calendar highlighting the wide range of events on offer in the Greater Hamilton Region during Spring and Summer. “The Greater Hamilton

With summer just around the corner, now is the time to prepare for your best summer ever. The very thought of summer conjures up images of warm days on the beach, being active outdoors, good times with friends, and (scarily for some) wearing less clothing. Don’t hold back this summer, let the transformation experts at Squashbrook Fitness & Leisure help you make this a summer to remember. At Squashbrook, their philosophy revolves around using exercise and nutrition to enable people to live better lives. This ultimately revolves around having abundant energy, the physical capacity to be active, and the confidence to be yourself and live your best life. Squashbrook have successfully helped many people transform their lives, regaining youthful energy and physical fitness to once again participate in life, rather than spectate as life passes by, through their Transformation Challenges. The next challenge runs from September 20 until November 29, meaning you’ll be in great shape to enjoy summer to the fullest. Using their proven program, the ‘Super Summer Shape Up’ includes membership to Squashbrook, Weekly Training plans, Group and 1 on 1 Personal Training options, and their very successful Metabolic Jumpstart Nutrition Plan. The nutrition plan is a metabolically matched, goal specific eating plan that is easy to implement and teaches you how to eat long term, very different from the many ‘fad’ diets that may produce short term results but fail in the long term. During previous challenges, the Top 10 typically average over 1kg of fat loss per week – just imagine how great you would feel! The training focus revolves around improving key movement

Events Guide is a terrific guide to what is happening in the Shire and I encourage everyone to grab a copy of the calendar and find out what’s on across the Greater Hamilton Region in the next six months,” he said. “I also encourage residents to take visiting friends and relatives along to these events. WDEA now has more than 300 staff, offices in 11 cities and towns and divisions covering employment, community, enterprises and training. “WDEA is held in very high regard, not only in this community and all of the other towns and cities where it operates, but at the national level,” he said. LOCAL

COLLECTED STUPIDITY You’re the problem - Yes - YOU... by Robbie Tansel I’m pretty darn annoyed this week. You know? Like every week. Fundamentally I’m an annoyed person. I’m pretty sure that when I was born I came out grizzling that the view hadn’t been that good for the previous nine months. And it had been way too cramped. What started my annoyance this week was more local businesses closing. It frustrates me thinking about more locals who are left without jobs or needing to find new employment. It means more families that are unsettled and facing difficulties. I’m sure there are a variety of reasons why these businesses are closing but I can’t help feeling like we are not supporting our local businesses enough. We are so caught up in saving a few dollars that we support big business instead, at the expense of our friends and neighbours. You can imagine then that it was not the ideal time for my telecommunications provider to make a call to me. When I say my telecommunications provider, what I mean is some stranger in India called Yuvraj who is being paid seven dollars a day to make out he cares about my phone plan. The thing that annoys me…well where do I even start? It’s irritating that I struggle to understand him. I am much more confident that if I was dealing with someone in Australia, or even Mount Gambier I’d be able to comprehend them better. Yuvraj said he’d like to give me a brand new mobile phone. He told me it was a fantastic deal that I wouldn’t believe. He was right. I didn’t believe him. I decided I’d be able to judge the quality of the deal much

better if I did talk to someone locally. Here’s the thing. What he was offering me was exactly the same as anything I could receive from my local phone dealer. Same cost, same product, same amount of calls and data. With a couple of small exceptions… For starters if I buy it locally I actually get to leave my house and have a look at the outside world. It provides me with the smallest bit of physical activity which doesn’t hurt me. Rather than having it delivered to my door I get to check out if the council has replaced all of the car parks down the main street with planter boxes yet. Since when did the main street become a national park? This method of getting a new phone also has the benefit of partaking in interactions with other humans. Maybe I run into a friend whilst down the street. Maybe I have a lovely conversation with the shop assistant and realise that our parents used to hang out together. Maybe someone compliments my hair. None of those are going to happen dealing with Yuvraj. One of the biggest benefits of buying locally comes if anything goes wrong with my purchase. If I buy it over the phone I’m pretty sure that Yuvraj is not going to be able to help me. If I take it to my local telecommunications dealer they really shouldn’t feel any obligation to help me. Yes their shop has the same logo on it but I didn’t buy it from them. They received no money from my purchase and will receive no money for helping me. So why should they help me? It’s like if you bought a computer at Myer, it broke down and then you took it down to Target hoping they’ll fix it. Now if I buy my new phone locally, you would very

Planning your future

much expect they’ll go out of their way to repair it and assist you with a loan phone if necessary. So essentially if I buy it from you Yuvraj, I’ll get exactly the same phone, the same price but with none of the benefits of dealing with other local residents. Why do so many people then make the decision to buy the phone from Yuvraj? Yes, we’re fundamentally lazy. Is it possible that we really want to fund the extension on the harbour view mansion of the telecommunication company CEO who has outsourced jobs overseas to increase profits and his own payout, so he can have a better view of his yacht in the harbour? We haven’t even started talking about the benefit of purchasing from local people who then spend the money at other local businesses, rather than sending the money to fund some millionaire’s lifestyle. We are the problem and it’s time we woke up and realised what we’re doing. We’re making people’s lives difficult and destroying our own community. We are doing that. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com to tell me what local businesses I should be supporting.

A new booklet being launched on September 12 features 24 inspiring stories that show the benefits of completing year 12 or an equivalent qualification. The `Why Year 12’ booklet has been compiled by South West Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) to showcase different pathways that local people have taken to successful careers. The launch on September 12 will start with activities at Deakin University during the morning for 130 grades five and six students from Warrnambool East Primary School and will continue with further activities and a formal launch in the afternoon at South West TAFE. South West LLEN chief executive officer Toni Jenkins said the booklet features the stories of people from across south-west Victoria who have followed interesting pathways into their careers. “It highlights there are number of different ways you can achieve year 12 or equivalent qualifications,” Ms Jenkins said. “No matter what pathway you’re interested in, there’s a way to get there.” The book is targeted at young people in late primary and early secondary school and their families. “Thinking about future pathways at a young age is important and we’re trying to encourage families to value education. It is never too early to start thinking about the future and what a young person can do to influence the pathway that they take,” Ms Jenkins said. “The booklet is part of trying to change the culture early on and empowering young people and their families to make informed choices about future options. “We hope that reading the stories will inspire people to understand that completing year 12 or equivalent is increasingly important in influencing what options are available after school. Year 12 is the launching pad.” The launch is happening at both Deakin University and South West TAFE to provide early exposure for young people to higher education options in the south-west. The booklet has been supported by South West LLEN Deakin University, South West TAFE, Rotary International, and Westvic Staffing Solutions and was compiled by Steve Pogonowski.

LOCAL Grant High goes back to back in State hockey titles Grant High School is proving to be a force to be reckoned with when it comes to hockey. For the third year in a row the Year 8/9 girls team has been ranked in the top two teams in the State and, for the second year in a row, they have won the State Championship. The team went through the Adelaide finals undefeated starting with a win over St Mark’s College 4–0 in the first game with goal scorers being Dana Jones, with two goals, and one each to Cody Lewis and Gemma Ballintyne. Portside Christian College was the next win for Grant, 3–0; with Cody Lewis scoring twice and and Dana Jones slotting the other goal. The third game, against Unley High School also produced a 3-0 victory with Cody lewis again scoring a double and Telicia Hewson with one, after finding herself in the right place on the post to deflect a shot behind the keeper into the goals. In this game several of our girls suffered minor injuries and Emma Ryan collected a cracking ball to the knee which saw her sidelined for the rest of the competition. The play off for top spot was against St Mark’s, who had by then recovered from their two and a half hour early morning bus journey and gave the girls a good game. The first goal was set up by a pass from Cody Lewis to Dana Jones inside the circle who slapped the ball across goal to the waiting stick of Lucy Clarke, perfectly positioned on the left post. St Mark’s then managed to score when they were awarded a short corner and the game remained at 1 -1 for a while. Goal number two for Grant High School was scored by Gemma Ballintyne from a short corner. St Mark’s managed to get behind the defence once more, but goal keeper Lillian Foote stopped a great shot on goal and Cody Lewis then made the score line (3–1) a few minutes later.

LOCAL Penola Players ready to make you laugh

The Penola Players are set to tread the boards again and this year’s performance is How Does Your Garden Grow,an English Comedy by Geoff Bamber based loosely on a Fawlty Towers style of comedy. The storyline actually has nothing to do with the title, perhaps similar to the confusion that the hotel operator, Peter Fenton (Rob Thornett) is continually surrounded by. The hotel, owned by Fenton and his wife, Jane (Lesley Whimshurst) is not exactly bustling with guests, consequently Ruth Bleach (Kate McDonald) from the bank is threatening to close it down. Fortunately,

there a big music festival is on down the road, so ageing rock star (Jon Ey) and manager, Cassandra Blue (Bec Harmer) check in unannounced. However, with only one booking for a ‘Mr Jones’ (Paul Harmer) on a romantic weekend, will Saskia (Lynn Oakley) know who is who when they all arrive? Mistaken identity, stalkers and other mystery guest make for busy times at the Lakeview Hotel. Penola Players have been going for more than 60 years now and have always featured actors from the local area. This year this includes teachers, an IGA employee, a vineyard worker, a truck driver, Wattle Range Council employee, local pub bartender and a nurse. The play is performed over four nights at Rymill Hall in Penola. Opening night is Friday, September 5, and is a straight theatre performance for $10. Saturday, September 6 and Friday and Saturday, September 12 & 13 are cabaret style with tickets for $15 and you can bring your own drinks and nibbles. Show starts at 8pm all nights and tickets are available from Di’s Gifts and Flowers (08)8737 2284 or at the door. Bookings are essential on Saturday, September 13.

LOCAL Community leaders and business mentors have been encouraged to join Glenelg Shire Council’s privately-funded councillor delegation, when they tour international friendship city, Zhangjiagang City in China, in 2015. The tour, initially scheduled for this year, has been delayed until 2015 to coincide with the 20 year anniversary of the Friendship Agreement. In announcing the later tour date, Mayor Cr John Northcott said he encouraged anyone from Glenelg Shire, who was interested in exploring or developing business relationships at an international level, to join the Council delegation. Meanwhile, NAB’s Melbournebased Asian Markets team recently hosted a workshop with councillors to ensure the group had practical advice on how to relate with Asian business clients ahead of the China tour. Councillors were also given a briefing of the taboos and the preferences for good communication. As well as the councillor group, the Asian Markets team spoke at separate meetings to key Portland stakeholders, such as the Portland MADE (Manufacturing Assembly Design and Engineering) network and Committee for Portland. Council’s International Relationships Policy principles allows for a maximum of two overseas visits - one visit to and one visit from the international friendship city - during each term of the Council (every four years). Two local businessmen accompanied Council during their last visit to Zhangjiagang City in September 2011. Since then, there have been two student delegations from Zhangjiagang City (August 2012 and August 2013), which included a Government delegation with each exchange. Cr Northcott said the meeting with NAB was also the chance to ask specific questions from an experienced source of reference and was perfect timing to coincide with the China exchange.

It is either the perfect play or the most delightful yet eerie of coincidences as Ben Allen was again the unlikely hero for the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers claimed the South Conference title for the second successive season. Allen lived the boyhood dream of hitting the buzzer beating, winning shot in 2013 and inexplicably, after a game rocked by frustration and disenchantment with referees, the big man again showed his perimeter game with a clutch three to give the Pioneers the lead with 3.5 seconds on the clock. The shot was even from as close as the fairytale needs it to be, from the exact spot he hit the 2013 match winning basket. There are of course subtle differences – in 2013 it basically was a buzzer beater but on Friday night there was still a glimmer of hope for Kilsyth to concoct a winning or tying basket – but the theatre of the moment will go down in Pioneers folklore and regardless of Allen’s other contributions to the club, those two shots will be what survive the test of time. The visitors got off to the perfect start with a solid opening quarter that saw them six points clear of the Pioneers. The Cobras had a hot hand from beyond the arc and inside the paint. Auryn McMillan loomed as a danger player and it proved to be, as he dominated the baseline and found his way to the basket time and time again across all four quarters, and in the tense dying minutes. But once again, the Pioneers even spread of the scoring and defensive workload told the story. Their resilience and determination was also on show, starting in the second quarter when they completely turned the game around to turn that six point deficit into a three point half time lead. Some great perimeter shots helped pull back the deficit, while the Cobras hot hand of the first quarter suffered at the hands of relentless defensive pressure from the Pioneers in the second, falling from 56 percent from the floor to 18 and from 75 percent from three point territory to 16 percent. Fittingly a tight third quarter saw the game all locked away at the final change and the tension was not released until the final siren as the two class sides traded baskets. No one could secure even a slight buffer and in the end, when you look at all the key stats, nothing separated the two sides in the end, expect that Allen three pointer. Of course there was Damian Johnson with his 15 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks all seemed to come at the right time, including the crucial defensive rebound in the last minute when Kilsyth missed the chance to set up a three point lead of their own, ahead of the Allen basket that sunk the Cobras season. Reigning Allan Scott Medallist Brad Hill was also a great contributor with 18 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Much as the team did last year, there were celebrations on claiming their second and the club’s third South Conference title, but it was quickly all about this weekend and a second crack at the national title – the real prize, if you ask the coaching staff and players. Last year, they took on Dandenong on their home pine and fell short. This time it is Nunawading standing between the Pioneers and the national crown, the team they defeated in the 2013 South Conference final. Tip off is at 2pm (Victorian time) on Sunday at Dandenong and will be live streamed for those fans that can’t make the trip to Melbourne.

North Gambier Football & Netball Club is not preparing for the finals sipping lattes and espressos however coffee has become an important part of the club courtesy of a significant sponsorship deal with a local coffee making enterprise. Valeri Tkatchenko and Melissa Illman from Mikro Coffee Roasters & Cafe Melzar have just signed a two year Diamond Sponsorship deal with the Tigers which puts them at the top end of the corporate sponsors ladder.Valeri and melissa have quickly built the reputation of Cafe Melzar, taking out the 2013 Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Award in the Environment & Sustainability category. The duo has recently opened a coffee speciality bar in Ripley Arcade - Mikro Coffee Roasters.“We are very proud to support the North Gambier Club and are grateful for the support already shown by club members from the very start of our specialty coffee and food journey and glad to have the opportunity to give something back to the club,” Valeri said.“We wish them best of luck for the finals and are looking forward to a long relationship with the club and would like to them for the opportunity to be involved.” Club president Tony Kelly acknowledged Valeri and Melissa’s decision to come on board as a Diamond Sponsor. “We do not take this level of sponsorship lightly and are delighted that Val and Melissa have decided to join the Tigers and believe that the relationship between the two parties will be mutually beneficial over a long period of time,” Tony said. “The quality of food, coffee and service provided by the guys is sensational and we as a football and netball club couldn’t be happier with this new relationship”.

Touch season set to get underway Vansittart Park is set to become a hive of activity on Wednesday nights again this summer. Mount Gambier Touch Association held their Annual General Meeting at the end of last month and is gearing up for another season of touch in Mount Gambier, with office bearers remaining relatively unchanged. The season will commence with Round 1 on October 8 at Vansittart Park and will follow the tradition of a mixed competition being played Wednesday nights until February. The association will also facilitate a men’s competition, following the instigation of the inaugural MyPod Cup last year, in conjunction with Portland Touch Association. MGTA president Sean Fulton is looking forward to the season ahead, having settled in to the top job last year. “I am eager to get the season underway & am looking forward to working with a passionate and enthusiastic committee again this year,” he said. Fulton is hoping to see a positive turnout this season and is calling for people to get involved in what is traditionally a social sport for all ages in Mount Gambier. “Last year we had 13 teams compete between two grades and this year we are looking to increase those teams numbers to ensure the sport continues to grow locally,” Mr Fulton said. “Touch is a great way to stay fit & active whilst having a little fun along the way.” Mount Gambier Touch Association will be holding a Registration Night on Wednesday, September 24, at 6pm at Blue Lake Soccer Clubrooms, on White Avenue. Anyone wishing to nominate a team for the forthcoming season should attend. Any queries or expressions of interest can be emailed to mountgambiertouch@gmail.com. For more information, contact Sean Fulton on 0400 457 894.
