latest innovations in skincare & beauty Fuss Wellness Spa leaves no stone unturned when looking for ways to ensure every client has the opportunity to look their very best. Mardi Goodes and the team are always looking for the latest technology to ensure they can offer the latest services available and IPL and Dermapen are the latest technologies to be added to the Fuss service menu with all staff trained in the innovative treatment options. “With IPL we can do hair reduction in all areas of the body, male and female, as well as vascular treatment for conditions like rosacea,” Mardi said. “IPL also treats pigmentation, acne and provides photo rejuvenation.” The Dermapen also provides a wide range of treatment options for issues including aged sagging skin, fine lines, smoker’s lines around the lips, skin tightening and rejuvenation, stretch marks, large pores and scaring, including surgical, burn and acne. “The Dermapen stimulates the skin’s own collagen, elastin and growth factors to help visibly smooth the skin and repair damage already done,” Mardi said. TENDER WRITING WORKSHOP

WORKSHOP DATES AND TIMES:

As I type this I’m sitting in a cabin in lovely Warrnambool. I’ve decided that I’m really not that big a fan of holidays. Why do we go on holidays anyway? As far as I can tell I get charged much more money to live in a house that isn’t as nice as my regular house. The bed isn’t as comfortable and I spend the early part of each day walking like Quasimodo. The furnishings are sparse and seem to have time travelled to the cabin from about 1975. The couch doesn’t have my distinctive butt groove worn in so it’s not as comfortable. You don’t know the good places to eat so it’s like Russian Roulette buying a Hawaiian pizza. Apart from that Shaquille is now cooped up in about a tenth as much space with predictable results. I can’t get away from his craziness no matter how much I try. It doesn’t matter where I am, he’ll be there going through cupboards, drawers and

NARACOORTE

every nook and cranny within seconds. For everyone’s sake, we need space. Not to worry, I’ll just send him out into the backyard. Hang on, there is no backyard, or front yard for that matter. The problems continue for me in the bathroom. Let me be clear that I prefer taking care of business in my home porcelain. There are many reasons for this, but I’m pretty sure that sporting teams perform best at their home field or stadium for the same reason. My problem with the toilet here is that the toilet paper is located at about seven o’clock. Do you know what I mean? The paper should be located within easy reach so you can get it easily and clean up. Somewhere near your knee, at about nine o’clock seems ideal. Having to twist and somehow reach back behind you is a recipe for disaster and a mess. The other problem I am encountering at this cabin is one of the stupidest inventions ever created: the shower curtain. Is there anything worse than having a shower with a shower curtain inevitably

blown back repeatedly onto your body by a ceiling fan. Okay, maybe a Caramello Koala that’s been cracked open with caramel smeared all over the inside of the wrapper. I really think governments should get involved and outlaw these monstrosities once and for all. Realistically being on holidays is very much the same as my normal life except I can’t go to work for eight hours a day to get some peace and quiet from my son’s grizzling. As far as I can tell the other big difference is the playgrounds I’m being dragged to. Admittedly the big playground down by the lake is pretty darn flash but I stopped judging my holidays by the quality of playgrounds I’d been to about 25 years ago. The only good thing that comes from going to a playground is

the sense of community. At a playground you’re reminded that you’re not the only one who is having their life ruined. I imagine it’s very much like going to jail. When you ask other parents how old their little precious is, you immediately start making calculations as to how much of their sentence they may have left. I always find it bizarre that we as parents teach our children not to talk to strangers but will make small talk with any stranger we meet at a playground. It’s fair to say I’m a creature of habit. It’s also fair to say that all of the above may be first world problems, but they’re happening to me so they’re really significant. If you have any hints to help me enjoy going on holidays, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

The Mount Gambier Library invites the public to join food-lover and Paris expert Jane Paech on Thursday, April 30, at 7pm as she launches her recently published book Delicious Days in Paris a delectable journey into one of the most beautiful, elegant and historic cities in the world. This cute compact book is more than just a travel guide complete with tantalising pictures of food and majestic sights complete with easy to follow sketch maps, address and contact details. Jane takes you on 14leisurely guided walks around the charismatic and mouth-watering streets of Paris. In her introduction, Jane tells us “the French flaneur (stroller) does not stride with purpose, but experiences the ramble with the sole aim of pleasure.” So slow down and take in the legendary and little-known cafes, restaurants and patisseries as well as the charming museums, art galleries, gardens and markets that Paris has to offer. In Jane’s warm style she shares her wealth and knowledge and encourages the reader to look a little deeper and discover the exquisite food and iconic culture from the French capital. Your senses will guide you on Jane’s food themed walks as you taste camembert, baguettes and French onion soup, salted-butter caramels and rose and jasmine macarons then walk it all off as you visit the Passage des Panoramas, the Palais Royal, Musee Galliera and Monet’s house and gardens. Jane Paech grew up on a farm near Naracoorte where her lifelong love of food was born. Living in New York further ignited her passion for both food and travel, and when an opportunity to live in Paris arose, she turned a career in nursing into travel writing, unable to resist documenting all the wonderful sights, smells and tastes she discovered. This is a free community event being held by the Mount Gambier Library with registration required for catering purposes. Please telephone the Mount Gambier Library (08)8721 2540 to book your seat.

locks in more cruise ship visits

Popular Australian cruise ship company P&O Cruises has confirmed Portland in its itinerary of must-stop locations for 2015, bringing with it potential to carry more than six times the number of passengers than that which arrived on-board the city’s first cruise ship. Following its recent success in hosting the MS Europa, Glenelg Shire Council received notification from Tourism Victoria at the end of last week that Portland was part of P&O Cruises’ 2015/16 program release. With 11 decks and room for 1950 passengers, P&O’s Pacific Jewel is scheduled to berth in the city six times from February next year. The ship is expected to draw capacity crowds in 2015 due to its recent addition of the world’s largest adventure park at sea, P&OEdge. The arrival of Portland’s first cruise ship, the MS Europa, in March 2014 had been seven years in the making for Glenelg Shire Council and was estimated to have gifted a $500,000 economic boost to Portland. The conservative figure was based on direct financial input made to businesses on the one-day stop-over of about $150,000, with flow on effects still being felt by local businesses. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor John Northcott said Council had been correct in remaining confident in

• Potential to subdivide (STCA) • Sold as WALK-IN WALK-OUT • Great opportunity to buy a holiday investment • Great continuance of holiday makers returning yearly • Excellent value package, Instant $$$ return

the cruise ship market and the benefits it could bring to the Shire. “This announcement by P&O is very exciting news for us and will go further to placing Portland and our Shire on the map as a popular tourism destination,” he said. “The goal of bringing ships to Portland was a great Council initiative and I know the team is looking forward to reviving the momentum it achieved in the lead up to the MS Europa visit. “We will continue to work with local business and I’m confident in our community’s proven ability to make our guests feel very welcome.” The 2015-16 P&O cruise program is on sale from April 28 and, includes the “new port of Portland”, described by the company as “the scenic fishing village on Victoria’s famed Great Ocean Road”. Pacific Jewel will sail on enhanced South Australia and Tasmania itineraries

ranging from five to 11 nights and featuring visits to Kangaroo Island, Burnie, Port Arthur, Port Lincoln and Portland, with fares for Melbourne cruises start from $499 per person quad share for a threenight cruise to Burnie. The cruise line’s expanded South Australian program will include a nine-night roundtrip cruise from Adelaide visiting Melbourne, Burnie, Kangaroo Island, Port Lincoln and Portland, priced from $1199 per person quad share. P&O Cruises Senior Vice President Tammy Marshall said the cruise line was ramping up its offerings in 2015-16, with more choices and more local ports than any other cruise line. “Our new program gives travellers from all over Australia the chance to explore some of the most beautiful corners of our country,” Ms Marshall said.

SPORT Locals Shingokan Karate Mount Gambier has taken six South Australian State Titles in Adelaide recently making it South Australia’s most successful regional club at this major event. A team of just four students, competed across a range of divisions, performing exceptionally well and surpriseing event organisers. Brothers Connor and Jayden Prior, in their respective age divisions, won back to back gold medals in both their fighting (kumite) and kata (forms) events, bringing home four medals in total. Samantha Freeman won gold in her fighting division and picked up a silver medal in kata. Tammy Stephens took out the club’s sixth gold medal in the women’s veterans fighting division, a silver in the women’s open and a bronze in the women’s kata. In Connor’s division, he fought on 4 occasions winning his first two fights 8-0, had a close third fight 2-1 and then destroyed his opponent in the finals with an 8-0 victory. Connor has been training with the SA State team this year and looks set to be included as a member of the team to contest the AKF Australian National Championships later in Perth this year. Jayden won all of his fights convincingly but the highlight of his day was his winning of the junior kata

bring back State titles

against a very large field of competitors with a performance that was significantly ahead of both of the other medal winning contestants. Samantha Freeman, currently completing her Year 12 studies, has had a restricted training schedule this year, but despite that, managed to convincingly win the girls 16-17 years age division with a sound display of her already proven skills. A relative newcomer to competition, Tammy Stephens managed to perform kata well enough to take a bronze medal, and went on to a silver in the women’s open and a great win in the women’s veterans fighting division. “This was a great performance and result for a regional club and just reward for the efforts these students have made and continue to make here in Mount Gambier,” Shingokan Australian Head

of Style and coach Goeff Rohde said. Two new beginners courses specifically targeting 5-7 yr and 8-12 yr olds will be scheduled next term. For information on these courses, please call (08)8726 8199 to book your position. Shingokan Karate provides a family environment which supports students of all abilities and ensures recognised and accredited traditional Japanese training. Courses will run at the dedicated training facility at 27 Percy St which proves a fully operational gym and matted floor to ensure your child’s safety. Advertorial I NARACOORTE GOLF CLUB

ADVERTORIAL New Yes, it’s that time of year again when Easter Bunny is about to visit and that of course can only mean two things - chocolate and

release roses unveiled

massive clearance sale time at Gardenarium. With that little bit of rain in the past few weeks it seems a little bit autumny again and the

Freight Service

100% Lo d cally Owned & Operate

nights are certainly getting a little crisper - a great time for planting. This year Easter is a little earlier, so some of our Autumn foliage trees

and plants will not be in full splendour but on the flip side the roses last year at our Easter Open Weekend were nearly finished. This Easter weekend we are again having our massive rose clearance sale and Awesome Autumn Trees sale to make room for renovations. The roses are looking fantastic after a later than normal summer prune after all the hot weather and we are clearing all of the roses in our rose growing area to make room for a further expansion to our Advanced Trees section and this can only mean one thing bargains all round. Yes, all of our roses, in bush, standard, weeping, groundcovers, David Austins, Delbards etc will be up to 50% off, with $5 bush roses and $10 standard roses to clear. Autumn is a great time for planting as the ground is still warm and you will get some amazing growth but the main factor is that the plants will be well settled in for next spring. The other great bonus of course is that you will have a year older rose, with much more branching framework and of course masses of blooms right now. Plus you can see what you are buying in terms of rose blooms and their colours as opposed to winter when they are dormant. From Anzac Day until Sunday, April 27, we will have THE RSL ROSEs for sale in full bloom

to plant now to remember our diggers and many of the 2013 new release rose varieties will also be on show and for sale in the long weekend clearance. Nowadays more and more of our roses raise money for charity and these will be on display this weekend also. This weekend we will also be showcasing the 2014 upcoming new release varieties which need to be ordered this weekend to avoid missing out. Many of the new releases especially the David Austin rose Princess Anne, the Daniel Morcombe Rose, which was officially launched last Wednesday on television and a couple of the Delbard Roses, Pink Intuition and Blue Emotion that were featured at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show and again on Better Homes and Gardens have been hugely popular and are already heavily ordered. A mail order customer advised us that we are the only distributor left in Australia with Blue Emotion still for sale. Our website has nearly crashed a couple of times over the past few weeks and the phone has not stopped since Wednesday’s launch of the Daniel Morcombe Rose. In many cases we will be sold out well before they are even dug from the paddock, so

we urge local customers to order now as most of our roses go to Queensland and New South Wales. The Wedding Rose and Golden Jubilee are also grabbing a lot of attention , so be sure to get your orders in for these varieties as soon as possible. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees will also be having a massive tree sale from Easter Saturday through to Easter Monday so bring your trailer, truck, horse float whatever you like and grab a bargain. Most of the advanced trees in our Limestone Coast Advanced Trees section of the business will be reduced to clear with up to 50% off and more on clearance trees, fruit trees and citrus and $10, $15 and $20 tree specials .This will make more room for a whole new area of trees, where we aim to hold more of our stock, rather than bringing it in from our growing field. This means there will be more trees on hand and will cater better for our growing demand for our trees and fruit trees. We have already started expanding the evergreen advanced tree section and aim to widen the pathways making browsing and choosing a little easier. We don’t do “empty” very well here as many will know but it has been hard squeezing

all of our huge stock in to the sales area. The Pot Shop part of the business has been busy receiving container loads of glazed, terracotta, sandstone and concrete pots over the past few months and we also need to clear some of those to make more room for more pots, trees and outdoor furniture. Some of the terracotta which is all now pre sealed , so it doesn’t dry out like the old terracotta has been so drastically reduced and with the strength of the Aussie dollar is now cheaper than buying plastic pots. So, come in and browse through the extensive range and pick up a bargain. There will also be $2, $5 and $10 pot specials. Much of our giftware, wall art and fountains will also be on clearance, as well as birdhouses, dovecotes etc. as we make way for the opening of our New Gift shop area, which just may be finished in time for the Anzac Weekend festivities. We will be openall day Anzac Day .We are situated on Bay Road (Riddoch Highway) 1.3 kms south of the Blue Lake roundabout, so we’ll look forward to seeing you then. By Calum Haygarth

The 2014 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Committee is thrilled to present Co-Opera’s new touring production of ‘Madama Butterfly’ as part of the official Festival program launched recently – marking twenty years of continuous CoOpera in Penola. Following the official Opening of the Festival on Thursday, May 22, the production will be performed in Penola’s Rymill Hall, offering a relaxed Cabaret event of fun entertainment in Co-Opera’s uniquely vivacious and irreverent style. “The 1995 performance of La Boheme in Penola was the first for the most loyal host Co-Opera has in Australia,” said organiser Peter Muller. “For every one of the succeeding years Co-Opera has

presented a performance as part of the May Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival, a milestone of which we as a community should be incredibly proud,” he said. ‘Madama Butterfly’ is one of the world’s most loved operas. Based on a short story by John Luther Long from the late eighteenth century, the story, purported to be true, is of a young geisha girl who marries an American naval officer and is then forsaken by her husband for a bride from his own country. The richness of Puccini’s music – through the performance of nine singers and 10 instrumentalists – fuses the joy, beauty and sorrow of Puccini’s masterpiece with the elegance and sophistication of Japanese Kabuki Theatre. The performances will be sung in the original Italian with English surtitles.

“The evening will be a fantastic opportunity to enjoy one of the world’s most famous operas, right here in Penola,” said Mr Muller. “We look forward to once again showing our appreciation of Co-Opera’s continuous support for the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival and experiencing one of the most loved operas,” he said. floral tribute set to take shape As you walk down Glenelg Street towards the Portland Botanic Gardens at the moment, it’s hard not to stop and stare at the flourishing fenced nursery you’ll arrive at just a block from the garden gates. With a selection of dahlias, blue salvias and marigolds in full bloom, this nursery is set aside specifically

for Portland RSL’s unique ANZAC Day floral tribute. Glenelg Shire Council has been assisting the Portland RSL since the 1930s, initially by providing the flowers and laying them out in the motif, until the decorating task was taken on by the RSL from the early 1980s. Glenelg Shire Council horticulturist David Garnier (pictured), who spends part of his day caring for the ANZAC Day flowers from November each year, said there was little doubt he has the best office in town. For the past 40 years David has been involved in the ANZAC Day tribute, where about 20,000 flowers, including dahlias, blue salvias, marigolds and giant orange/African Marigolds, are laid out on the Memorial Triangle overlooking Portland Harbour. He sets about preparing the garden in November the year before the planned ANZAC Day tribute, after Portland RSL gives him the list of colours they will need for their motif that year. A separate garden bed has been set up in the Portland Botanic Garden Nursery this year to grow some additional perenniels, which are plants that can be used for more than one season. These will replace the previous reliance on annuals, which are plants that mature and complete their lifecycle over the course of a single year.

Andersons is again delighted to be the major sponsor of the PARAQUAD SA Great Southern Ladies Luncheon. We’ve been a proud supporter of PARAQUAD SA for a very long time. Our founding Partner, Paul Anderson who suffered a significant spinal injury was also a board member of PQA. Running off the back of the huge success in 2013, of the inaugural Great Southern Ladies Luncheon, we jumped at the chance to get onboard again in 2014. The event is designed to promote women who have found success

in their chosen fields. It’s hosted by the very animated Alan Richardson in conversation with a panel of three of the South East’s leading ladies. We’ll be finding out about their passions, their road to success and how they overcame obstacles along the way. The guest speakers for 2014 are Sue Charlton AM (Director, One Stop Paediatric Services), Linda Sewell (CEO, One Forty One Plantations) and Louise Stock (Principal, Focus Facilitation). We’d love you to join us in celebrating our Great Southern Ladies at the luncheon on Friday 2 May at the Commodore on

the Park. Funds raised from this event go to support the PARAQUAD SA Corriedale Park Accessible Housing Project in Mt Gambier (pictured). Tickets are available from HOMECARE+ (Mt Gambier) and the Police Credit Union. For more information visit www.pqasa.asn.au or call the PQA Events Team on (08)8355 3500.

is the spice of life & spicy is exactly what St Martins is dishing up Recently St Martins Lutheran College held a Blokes Morning for their Foundation students. The morning involved Dads coming in to the school to read aloud to the children. The Dads (or special people) first assembled for some morning tea and an opportunity to meet other dads. The students then arrived at the library eager to select some books and start reading. Those children who did not have an adult attending, were included in a small group with a friend and their dad. The purpose of the morning was to encourage a love of books and reading.

Being read to develops literacy in a number of ways. Among other things it exposes children to new words and thus expands their vocabulary, it provides them with ideas for their own writing and develops their awareness of how language works. It is important for children to see their strong male role models reading and enjoying books as it encourages them to read also. Literacy is embedded into every part of our curriculum so by encouraging a love of books and reading we are more likely to develop children who read for pleasure and therefore have more competent literacy skills. This in turn will have a flow on effect to all

areas of the child’s education. Judging by the excitement of the children, the smiles on their faces and the enthusiasm of the dads, the morning was a great success. Left - Hudson Croser with his dad Jeff at St Martins Lutheran College Blokes Morning.

On Tuesday, April 8, the St Martins Lutheran College Year 4 classes went to Port MacDonnell to wrap up our term’s work on local Indigenous culture. Although the day started out a little wet, the conditions turned in our favor and we all enjoyed a great day. The students had a fabulous time hunting for many things the Boandik people may have used to survive in this area. They were also very excited to use the iPads to photograph and record their findings over the day. To finish our excursion the kids had a marvelous time creating sand sculptures and artworks with the many items they collected during their scavenge along the beach. secure your future FEATURE Building Read the newspapers, turn on the radio or television, and you’ll get overwhelming evidence of something you probably already know - times are tough. Unemployment is rising. Debt is rising. Credit is difficult to come by. And we’re not saving for a rinay day like we used to. So what do you do? The best philosophy in all sorts of tough times is to control the things you can control. You’ll be surprised how much of a difference— both financially and emotionally—a few small moves will make.

your dreams for more than 20 years

Step 1: Build a Cushion Having an emergency fund to fall back on is going to help you sleep at night during the best of times,

and in a shaky economy, it can be a real lifesaver, particularly if you lose your job. It is best to usually have about three to six months of living expenses for a two-income family, and closer to six if you’re single or your spouse doesn’t work outside the home. In a downturn, you want to shoot for six no matter what your situation, particularly if you work in an industry that’s likely to be hit hard—think financial services, real estate or retail. If that sounds like a lot of money, remember that

we’re talking about bare minimum living expenses here. If you’re laid off, your spending is going to come to a screeching halt, meaning your emergency fund doesn’t have to hold enough to cover your current lifestyle if it involves dining out every Friday night, a daily trip to the coffee shop and a family movie on Sundays. You just need to have enough to float the necessities: utilities, mortgage or rental payments and food. So where do you stash the cash? An emergency fund is all about liquidity, so you want to put it where you can get to it easily, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’tearn some interest. Check out money market or highinterest savings accounts, particularly those that are housed exclusively online, then request an ATM card for easy access. But remember, this is for emergencies only, so no swinging by the bank on your way to the mall. Step 2: Pay Down Debt Chipping away at credit card and other highinterest debts during an economic downturn is your best investment. So how do you do it? You have to find wiggle room in your budget by looking at where your money is going and brainstorming ways to cut back. For the next two weeks, track every single penny that leaves your wallet, every swipe of your debit card. You’ll be surprised at how much of your spending is discretionary—a sandwich here, a rented movie there. Once you see how the little things add up, you’ll have an easier time

secure your future FEATURE Building

your dreams for more than 20 years quickly in case things go wrong. And networking, always key to getting and keeping a good job, is even more important now. Show up to events, join an association—the idea is to keep your name and face fresh in the minds of decisionmakers.

throwing that cash toward your debts, where it can really have an impact on your balance sheet. And if you think you’ve cut back on everything you can, remember that other, bigger items can be adjusted as well. Maybe this year, you pick a family vacation spot that’s within driving distance rather than having to shell out for pricey plane tickets.

up selling low and buying high, which is the opposite of what you want. The market always rebounds, so sit tight. Step 4: Keep Your Job Everyone understands this is not always quite that easy. But you can take a few steps to ensure that the odds are in your favour. When companies look to cut costs and, subsequently, people, they

look at who’s generating the most revenue. Are you having a positive impact on the company’s bottom line? Be sure that you’re working on important projects, and ask your boss if you can take on additional responsibilities. The key is to seem indispensable. When all else fails, it doesn’t hurt to have a headhunter at your fingertips in case so you can take action

Step 5: Work on Your Credit Rating What constitutes a good rating has actually gone up, so you have to work a little harder to stay at the top of the class. Things like shopping for credit and high levels of debt all work against you, so keep them to a minimum. Also, a good score means easy access to cash if you need it, and in these times, everyone should have a home equity line of credit in their back pocket in case of an emergency.

Step 3: Rebalance Your Portfolio The easiest way to do this is with target-date retirement funds. These guys take most of the work off your shoulders and are offered by most major investment firms. So what are they? In a nutshell, you pick the fund that will mature closest to when you anticipate retiring—so if you’re 35 years old, you want to select a fund with a target date of 2030.Then, it will rebalance itself over time, so you’re investing aggressively in more stocks, less bonds while you’re young, and as you age, the balance shifts to more bonds, less stocks. If you want a little more control, a general formula for balancing your portfolio is to subtract your age from 100. The resulting number is the percentage of your money that you should have in stocks. One other thing - don’t try to time the market. History tells us that this never works, and the best strategy is just letting your money ride. If you start making moves, there’s a good chance you’ll end

a trip to Paris

The Mount Gambier Library invites the public to join food-lover and Paris expert Jane Paech on Thursday, April 30, at

7pm as she launches her recently published book Delicious Days in Paris a delectable journey into one of the

most beautiful, elegant and historic cities in the world. This cute compact book is more than just a travel guide complete

with tantalising pictures of food and majestic sights complete with easy to follow sketch maps, address and contact details. Jane takes you on 14 leisurely guided walks around the charismatic and mouth-watering streets of Paris. Your senses will guide you on Jane’s food themed walks as you taste camembert, baguettes and French onion soup, salted-butter caramels and rose and jasmine macarons then walk it all off as you visit the Passage des Panoramas, the Palais Royal, Musee Galliera and Monet’s house and

gardens. “Some authors write simply because they have to write,” Jane said. “I write because when I come across a dish, a custom, a place, recipe or culture that excites me, I have an overwhelming desire to share it and preserve the memory.” Her work has been featured in various publications including Australian Gourmet Traveller” and “Qantas Inflight Magazine” and her first book “A Family in Paris:

Stories of food, life and adventure” won the Australian category for Food Literature at the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. This is a free community event being held by the Mount Gambier Library with

registration required for catering purposes. Please telephone the Mount Gambier Library (08)8721 2540 to book your seat. Jane’s books will be available for sale and signing following the event. Above - Jane Paech.

ATHLETICS Suttontown Seven Small Schools joined in the fun and challenges of the 59th annual Mt Gambier and Districts Small Schools Sports Day earlier this month with Suttontown Primary School (pictured right) claiming the overall honours with a narrow win over Kongorong and third placegetter Mil Lel. The day began with the traditional march along Commercial Street and was well supported by local traders and well-wishers. Approximately 600 students aged five to 13 and a huge turnout of parents enjoyed the mild weather and excellent conditions of the Blue Lake Sports grounds to run, jump, throw and kick their way around a variety of events. Newly elected local MP, Troy Bell performed his first official public function by opening the day’s proceedings and Mike Armour, the 2013 Mount Gambier Australia Day Citizen of the Year presented medals and shields to the winners. This year’s president Chris Edmonds said the day highlighted the great partnerships between the schools with the organisation and planning shared to make sure the day was another successful event. “The atmosphere of healthy competition, participation and fun ensured the athletes had a great day,” he said. Levi Day is embarking on his second season of the British National Superstock 600 Championship as we speak. Following is an excerpt from a feature story on the former Mount Gambier rider from the Autumn issue of Southern Life. It’s not unusual for a 24 year old with a need for speed to be following his dream and competing overseas but it is more unusual that the rider has

only been in the saddle for a decade. Despite following his father around McNamara Park as Robert Day competed in motocross and road racing, Levi didn’t take to the track until he was 14. “I followed dad around at Mac Park for a long time before I was allowed to ride,” Levi said. “I was brought up around bikes.” He did have plenty of experience on two wheels though, cutting his teeth in BMX, a common pre-cursor for many bike

racers. “I competed in BMX until I was 12,” Levi said. “It was still two wheels so it was a good start – dad just thought the bikes were too dangerous.” And in his early days of road racing he competed against former BMX rivals. And while there is often a misconception that everyone involved in high level motor racing has had everything hand to them – nothing could be further from the truth in the case of Levi Day.

displayed from 11am to 12.30pm. During that time members went inside the Lady Nelson complex, where president Roger Johnston spoke briefly about the clubs history over the past 15 years. He then presented two surprise life memberships to David Johnston and Gwen Zed who both are inaugural members, and have remained dedicated and passionate members for

For the first four years of his riding career he was basically just a club racer. “It was all I could afford,” he said. From day one, Levi has had the full support of his parents, Robert and Vickie, but the deal was always that Levi would be a big contributor in financing his own racing journey. “I was working three or four jobs when I was in high school,” Levi said. From Baker’s Delight and washing cars at Timber Tech Engineering to teaching drums, a job

he continued even when he started his fitting and turning apprenticeship with Whitty Engineering, Levi spent every waking moment studying, working or working on his bike. “If I ever failed any subject at school it would have been the end of racing,” Levi said.
