LOCAL Engineering The winner of this year’s Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank scholarship is Ben Snell, of Mount Gambier. Ben achieved an ATAR score of 97.95, completing year 12 at Tenison Woods College in 2013; and showed remarkable drive and dedication to achieve this despite difficult circumstances. He was selected as the worthy recipient of the $10,000 scholarship to assist him in his studies and living expenses whilst

studying a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, and a Bachelor of Finance (a five year double degree) at the University of Adelaide. The former Mount Gambier student had intentions of becoming a pro golfer, and spent some time in the city pursuing this; however after getting a taste of engineering studies in Year 11, he found his real passion was towards this newfound career path of Engineering. Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank wishes Ben well in achieving his

at the front of the complex, finalising the Glenelg Aboriginal Partnership Plan 2011-13 action of providing an Aboriginal name to the facility. As a result of discussions with the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Corporation, the name Karreeta Peeneeyt Mara was approved for use by the traditional owners through the South West Aboriginal Language Committee. The use of dual or multiple naming of features is recognised in several states and territories as a legitimate means of recording feature names of Aboriginal and Torres Strait origin. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said Council had considered this

location appropriate to give official recognition to names drawn from two cultural backgrounds. “A community hub is a special place with meaning that invites interaction between local children and their families” he said. “It is a place where people feel welcome to sit, chat, and establish new friendships. “I’m pleased we now have a sign in place to ensure both names are prominent and clear to both residents and visitors to the community.” Construction of the Portland Child and Family Complex was completed on 30 June 2010. The complex is a purpose-built

integrated child and family services facility that provides integrated specialist support services and community development programs for children aged from 0 – 12 years, and their families. The Complex is owned and operated by the Glenelg Shire Council and offers long day care, kindergarten, family day care and in-home care and maternal child health. The Complex is open between 7.30am and 6pm. For more information about the Portland Child and Family Complex, please contact the Children’s Services general enquiries line on (03)5522 2211 or email to: childrenservicesen quiry@glenelg.vic.gov.au

permanent, grassed and watered competition courses in Australia with the second course being opened at last year’s event. The commitment, dedication and sheer hard work over many years by the SA Yard Dog Association, the Lucindale Field Days Committee and their sponsors, and the Lucindale Lions Club in building these yards is to be applauded. Kelpie Korner is also a great venue for spectators with shade and seating on the perimeters of the courses and food outlets and courtesy bus stop nearby. Generous sponsorship has again been provided by the Lucindale Lions Club, South Australian Yard Dog Association, Pedigree, Elders, Norton Gates, Cloveridge, Watervalley, AJ & HK Ryan Livestock Carriers, Lucindale Engineering, Jase’s Fencing, RJC Evans & Co, Naracoorte Hotel Motel, Lucindale Hotel, South East Rural Contracting, Raidis Estate Winery and Crown Inn Kingston. Puppies and young dogs will be on display, so Kelpie Korner is definitely the place to be to see the cream of Australian yard dogs in action. Keith is set to host the next round of the Australian Tractor Pulling Association at the Keith ‘Diesel and Dirt Derby’ on March 29. A series round has just been run and won in conjunction with the Adelaide Clipsal 500 last weekend – and it was a roaring success! With the crowds supporting all competitors across the entire four day event, they were not disappointed and were left wanting more. This was the first time a tractor pull round was held in a capital city in Australia, and hopefully not the last. In the two Mini classes, both ‘Blown Income’ and ‘Flamin Furious’ had a clean sweep winning all three of their weight classes. While in the Limited Modified class ‘Shillberite’ shared places with fellow competitors, coming away with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Unfortunately another Mini Tractor from South Australia “Success 2’ broke down early in the event and was unable to continue. With three South Australian Tractors up at the top of the leader board in the Australian Tractor Pull Championship series, there is no doubt that they will endeavour to continue their wining ways in the upcoming Keith event. With only three points rounds left, all competitors are out to gain as many points as they can, aiming to be crowned Australian No 1 in their class.

ANNETTE MCLAUGHLIN IS BACK... ...and here to do it all again!

‘‘

‘‘

‘‘

Kevin and Lorraine

Annette made our re-location go so much easier. It was great to know we had such a professional agent. We are very appreciative of her successful outcome in these difficult times.

‘‘

‘‘

Annette provided a high level of service during our recent transaction. Purchasing a home when you are five hours away can be quite difficult, however Annette made it easy. She provided me with additional photographs and was willing to plan inspections to suit me. Annette was always professional while incredibly affable. It’s the easiest $200,000 I have ever spent.

‘‘

‘‘

‘‘

Annette was most professional in the way she assisted me in the purchase of my home, here in Mount Gambier. Her skillful communications for all concerned was second to none, along with her ‘can do’ and calming influence with a sprinkle of humour, made the process so very much easier. I have no hesitation recommending Annette’s services to all who may be looking to buy or sell property.

We found our dealings with Annete McLaughlin to be professional, friendly and efficient. At all times our wishes were respected, our questions were respected, our questions were answered promptly and we were kept informed about the progress of the sale. Annette made this a stress free experience for us and we would highly recommend her to any prospective clients.

Vicki

‘‘

You did such a great job in selling the house. Thank you so much.

LOCAL It’s

all about the clients

Leading rural enterprise Elders understands that nothing is more important than their clients and that’s why when it was a late season in 2013 and locking in a Christmas celebration with those clients just wasn’t feasible, Elders didn’t give up on scheduling this critical networking opportunity. So earlier this month, local Elders management put on a client night at South Gambier Football Club to thanks their loyal customers and to also update them on just what Elders has achieved and what it’s looking to achieve going forward. Australian Group General Manager David Goodfellow and Southern Zone General Manager Malcolm Hunt were the headline act at the Elders client night, ensuring this region’s loyal customers had direct access to some of the company’s highest ranking decision makers. They joined area manager Brett Exelby, who oversees the Mount Gambier, Kingston and Millicent Elders operations. He has been part of the Elders team for seven years and saw the client night as the best way to champion Elders’ primary focus – looking after their clients. And while keeping the

function informal was a priority, it was an opportunity for David Goodfellow to present a brief snapshot of Elders, past, present and future. The event attracted 200 people, which included 150 clients and their families, and staff across all branches of Elders diverse services. “It was an amazing response from clients,” Mr Exelby said. “Elders has been going through a fair bit of change and it was a great opportunity to have David (Goodfellow) make a brief presentation and field some questions and answers.”The rural sector in this region is buoyant at the moment and events like the Elders client night not only reinforce that but also strengthen the working relationship between Elders and their clients and between the clients themselves. “It is a great networking opportunity because these guys are all

busy and don’t always have time to just chat with each other and find out how everyone’s going, share their concerns and ideas and in the end that’s the best part of the night,” Mr Exelby said. “Farmers as a breed are pretty optimistic people and there is a really positive feel around the industry at the moment.” The night is always a great insight for staff across all sectors – livestock, real estate, insurance and finance. “They get to meet their clients and their families and that helps them get to know them a bit better,” Mr Exelby said. “To meet the other part of their lives just helps that relationship grow – building relationships is what Elders is all about and our focus is around clients and clients only.”

The eras represent the rites of passage that have made the band and its music what it is today, carving out a special place in the popular music history of Australia and New Zealand. Now, for the first time, Dragon is hitting the road to celebrate these three ages with their special Dragon – The Trilogy Concert tour, which will see them performing in metro and regional centres over a few months in early 2014.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Back to the future by Robbie Tansel

You will not believe this. I’m going to blow your mind. I’m going to blow your mind so much that it’s going to blow the top off your cranium. I’ve worked out how to time travel. Let me be clear, I’m not some wacky scientist. I have not bought a Delorean. It’s not actually something I’ve been actively trying to discover. It just happened last week. Here’s how you do it. You walk into any toy shop or down the toy aisle at your local department store. Instantly you’re transported to 1988. Let’s give a bit of a rundown. Lego gets its own aisle, just like it did in 1988. Nothing new about that. You can still buy all of your

favourite Star Wars figures just like in the early 80’s when the movies came out. In fact not only is there Lego and Star Wars, there is even Star Wars Lego! Then you can grab all of your favourite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle plastic junk. That’s the same Ninja Turtles who I was watching on VHS in 1990. (You stupid kids will have to Google VHS.) What about if you were a girl in the 1980s and 90’? What did the toymakers decide would be your favourite play mate? How about some fat little baby thing that was born in a cabbage patch. Is it any wonder that we have such an epidemic of teen pregnancies when we’ve now spent decades telling the youth that children come from cabbage patches? And is it also any wonder that kids wouldn’t want to eat cabbages. Or maybe you were a Barbie girl, just like ninety percent of girls since 1959! There

help us, outside climbing trees, riding bikes, or throwing balls at their brother. And they’d love a delicious Polly Waffle.

are still hundreds of Hot Wheel cars just like there have been since 1968. Maybe you’re more of a train freak. Thomas the Train Engines has been chugging away on shelves for decades too. Mr Potato Head? 1949. Play doh. 1950s. Tonka Trucks. Decades. Spiderman? Decades. Transformers. 1984. Maybe you’re more of a board game sort of kid. You still get to time travel in the board game aisle. Monopoly, Hungry Hippos, Kerplunk, Mouse Trap, Scrabble, Twister, Guess Who. They’re all there just like they were back in the 80s if not before. I’m starting to think that being a toy designer might be the easiest job in the world. Walk in, remember what toys I was playing with twenty years ago, spend ten minutes deciding how

to cash in on the latest kids animated movie and then head for an early lunch. But here’s the thing. Kids still love all this stuff. What’s my point? Kids haven’t changed as much as people reckon they have. People want to focus on the fact that we live in this technological new world. Sure kids love playing their Playstation, Wii, Xbox or IPad games. But so did we back in the day. We all loved our Commodore 64’s and Ataris. The big difference was that back in the day our parents would tell us to get out of the damn house and do something constructive. And we got a bit sick of waiting the seven minutes it took for the tape to load up the game anyway. They still love all the stuff we used to love. They love the chance to play, whether with toys or, heaven

established performing act playing regular shows to followers across Australia. Shows have included headlining several all age and overage shows

throughout Victoria, shows throughout Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia, supporting several interstate acts and even supporting international acts on their Australian tours (such as Dance Gavin Dance (USA)). Drawing influences from a range of different bands such as Underoath, Death Cab For Cutie, Circa Survive and The Chariot; Belle Haven is tagged as adept, genuine song writers and performers. Set to release their debut album in 2014 (recorded in the USA with internationally renowned producer, Matt Goldman), Belle Haven are stamping their name into the minds of heavy music lovers everywhere. And the Melbourne bands keep coming witgh Mercies End, a four piece melodic metal band that is not content with following the trends set by the cookie cutter bands flooding today’s market. Mercies End has pooled its wide range of influences to create a sound that will appeal to a larger audience and ultimately stand the test of time. With songs that are as infectiously catchy as they are heavy, Mercies End’s blend of stadium sized melodies, air tight riffs and thunderous drums will be sure to carry them to the upper echelon of metal. Pridelands, Outlander and Wounded Pig are all flying the flag for local bands. The festival kicks off at 12noon and goes through until 11.30pm with an after party at Shadows Nightclub. There will be market stalls, children’s entertainment, vintage cars, square dancing and karate demonstrations, fire twirlers and highland dancing. Tickets are $15. Above (top) - Aversions Crown. Bold in its vision and deeply evocative, Lisa Wilson’s Lake literally floods the stage to soak up and explore our fascination and our fear of water. local history Imagine it’s 1934, the centenary pageant is in full swing in Portland and looking out to Portland Bay you see, anchored, the vessel that played the part of Henty’s “Thistle”. This image is one of a collection of photographs, showing Portland in 1934-35 and Nelson in 1936, which allows you to step back in time and see what it was really like in this part of the country 80 years ago. Donated to Glenelg Shire Council Cultural Collection by Brenton Brockhouse of Adelaide, the collection includes more than 90 images taken by former Mount Gambier school teacher Miss Zillah Maschmedt. The donor’s mother, Gweneth Brockhouse was Miss Maschmedt’s second cousin. Miss Maschmedt and her mother Arabella Maschmedt visited Portland around the time of the Portland centenary celebrations in November1934. Other Portland photographs in this collection show a variety of views of the harbour and foreshore, many views of the Botanic Gardens including arbours, arches and paths, the canal and lagoon, the bridge across to the spit, and the museum on Wellington Road, with its magnificent whalebone fence. The Nelson photographs were taken in 1936 and include views of Nelson township and Donovan’s Landing, the Glenelg River, river mouth and coastline, the newly erected Major Mitchell monument on the Isle of Bags near Nelson and the Mount Gambier to Nelson mail bus at the Victorian/South Australian border. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said the photographs were a significant addition to Council’s Cultural Collection. “Photographs that originate from private collections and have not been widely circulated can add considerable knowledge to what we already know of events, the landscape and the built environment within the shire,” he said. “Council appreciates the effort taken by Brenton to source these photos and share them with the community.”

Advertorial I JND FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS

Busting the super myths There are plenty of myths about superannuation out there. Let’s set the record straight. Myth 1 – Super is a type of investment. Wrong. Super is a tax-effective way to save for your retirement. Within super you can invest in different types of investments—or asset classes—with different levels of risk and return. Myth 2 – I have no control over my super. Wrong. Super is your money and, while it’s invested over a long term, there’s a lot you can do to take control over your retirement savings. You don’t need to accept the default investment option. You can change your super investment to reflect where you’re at in life. Most super funds offer a choice of investments depending on how much risk you’re prepared to take on. • If retirement is still a fair way off, you have longer to recover from any market downturns. So you might be willing to take on more risk. • If you’re nearing retirement, you have less time to recover from any market downturns. So you might take a more conservative approach and take on less risk. You can put your super into an investment platform, offering a wide range of investment options, from direct shares all the way through to managed funds. You can even set up a self managed super fund to take full control of your super. But don’t forget, you’ll take all the responsibility for complying with rules, administering your fund and managing your investments. Most SMSF owners get professional help with the paperwork. Myth 3 – I won’t have to share my super in a divorce. Wrong. Super is on the table in any divorce settlement, along with the family home and other investments. It’s treated just like any other asset. And that counts for de facto couples as well. You can split your super payments as part of a settlement. But you’ll still need to keep that money in a super fund until retirement. Myth 4 – I can’t access my super until I retire. Not strictly true. Many people don’t realise that if you were born before 1 July 1960, you can start a transition to retirement strategy when you turn 55. It’s a really tax-effective way to start drawing an income from your super, while still working and contributing towards your retirement nest egg. You can call AMP on 131 267 or your financial planner to find out the real story behind super. Go digital Now that you’ve busted some super myths, here are some simple digital solutions to help you sort out your super:

• Be the first to try AMP’s new Super and Banking App You can be one of the first people to use the new super and banking app from AMP – the convenient, easy way to manage your AMP super and bank accounts on your iPhone – coming early in 2014. Simply activate your online account at My Portfolio and anyone registered for My Portfolio will hear about it first! • Consolidate your super into one account. But remember to check the fees you might pay or if you will lose any insurance benefits. • See how you’re tracking towards your retirement goals. • Take control of your retirement savings and manage your super online at My Portfolio, AMP’s secure online super gateway. Registering for My Portfolio is quick and easy. Go to amp.com.au and click the link to log into My Portfolio. 1. Enter your personal details and AMP account number – found on your annual statement. 2. Select a username and password for your My Portfolio account. 3. MILLICENT IN FOCUS - an art & craft paradise - GELTWOOD FESTIVAL COVER A

festival to treasure

What is in a name? In some languages the term “gelt” or “gilt” means money or gold. The story of Geltwood is certainly one that is treasured by the Limestone Coast community. The Geltwood, as most locals would know, was a three masted iron hull ship that sank near Rivoli Bay in 1876 on its maiden voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne. Some 138 years later the Geltwood story continues to capture the imagination of people across the region through an annual festival held in Millicent which opens on March 28. The Geltwood craft festival provides an ideal opportunity for people from across the country to meet, and express their creativity. The centrepiece of the festival is the quilting displays where hundreds of intricate pieces are exhibited throughout the township of Millicent. Those wishing to learn the art of quilting or further their skills can participate in the many workshops on offer during the festival. Being a community event, the Geltwood Festival committee aims to assist a charity each year through the competition: Quilts for a Cause. This year the charity of choice the Little Heroes. The foundation will receive quilting entries to use how they see fit

(often for fundraising). There are great prizes on offer for entrants. Have you ever admired the remarkable hats and fascinators at the Melbourne Cup? Chances are they were designed by internationally renowned milliner Valtraud Reiner. In a first for the Geltwood Festival, Valtraud will be visiting Millicent to share her knowledge and expertise. On the topic of fashion, did you know the Millicent National Trust Museum has a collection of male and female outfits dating back to the 1800’s? This collection must be seen to be believed and you are encouraged to join the curator on a behind the scenes tour organised especially for the Geltwood Festival. From fabric to wood the Geltwood Festival also marks the beginning of the Tall Timbers exhibition. A long standing competition,Tall Timbers celebrates the creation of works from local timber. Drawing their inspiration from the region’s abundant resources our local wood workers proudly display their pieces alongside National competitors. Be sure to visit the exhibition at the Millicent Visitor Information Centre and vote for your favourite entry. While the Geltwood Ship’s bounty remains hidden on the sea floor, our local treasures will be on display during Market Day on Sunday 30 March. Centred around the main street in Millicent, there will be stalls selling local produce, homemade goods, tasty treats, art, craft and lots more! Entertainment will be provided by local musicians and the street will be lined with vintage cars. Kids can join in the Geltwood treasure hunt and participate in free craft activities. This is just a selection of the events that make up the Geltwood Festival. For more information including dates, times and venues please download an event brochure from www.wattlerange.sa. gov.au/geltwood

ADVERTORIAL I 2014 SE FIELD DAYS What is different about the South East Field Days at Lucindale from most others? It is the focus on catering for every need of site holders and visitors, from grandparents to toddlers while raising vital funds for their community. Yakka Park is an easy to get around site that is dust free, with numerous amenities and a wide range of food sites. For the less mobile, courtesy transport around the various sites and attractions is available. The 2014 event will be staged this Friday and Saturday. That pleasant family experience has attracted great crowds for the last few years and that in itself has ensured a vast majority of the 600 plus site holders receive the patronage they need to make their trip worthwhile. “The region is renowned for its highest quality foods and wines and there are plenty of opportunities to

sample these, but there is everything from jewellery, arts, crafts, education, business planning, finance, cropping, livestock development, machinery, children’s activities – you name it and it will probably be there,” Field Days secretary Lyn Crosby said. “The field days will be staging the Australian Yard Dog championships at our 2014 event. It will be the fourth time the national championships have been staged at the Lucindale Field Days which is a big honour,” Lyn added. Fresh and popular entertainment is also provided for visitors and there are exciting feature acts booked in for 2014. There is nothing quite like the main feature act, “The Lumberjack Show”. This international act is highly action packed, humorous and interactive and caters for all demographics. This funny family entertainment has been thrilling crowds in

An event not to be missed

Canada, New Zealand and now Australia for 10 years. Now it is your chance and this act is worth a visit to these field days on its own. Unfortunately the previously announced second feature act, Tony Golder and his amazing horse Regall has had to cancel

due to an injury to the horse. However, the good news is he has been replaced by Factory Freestyle Motorcross (FMX). For those of you who saw Josh Burdon and his amazing aerial feats last year, or those who missed it, this year presents an opportunity to be

Lifestyle1.net - 033

amazed again, or for the first time. This year this act will be staged at a different site, on Rayner Road near the Rowdy Gate. Throw in great entertainment by the popular Don Wishart in concert, and of course, the ever popular fashion parades, with normal shaped models

of all ages displaying the latest practical fashions that are available on-site and not only look fantastic, but also fit. So whether you are 9 or 90, fit or less active, or hungry or thirsty, there are plenty of reasons to attend these family friendly field days. Perhaps we will see

you there? Photo caption: The wonderfully entertaining Lumberjack Show has been entertaining audiences in Australia and internationally for 10 years – you can see them at this year’s South East Field Days at Lucindale.

Amber Hood has followed in the steps of her mother Tanya, taking out the 2013/14 Mount Gambier Softball League A grade best & fairest. It caps off a huge season for the talented utility, who was one of three local players in the South Australian Under 17 team and was a key part of the Mount Gambier Under 17 team that won the State championships last month. Hood won by one vote from fellow State team mate Cody Manning (Demons) and her Demons team mate and former State player Maggie Breen. Hood also won the runs batted in award while she did leave some silverware for mother, Tanya, who took home the Dianne Burley Memorial Trophy for batting average. The Hood family continued to dominate the awards with Georgia Hood winning the B grade best and fairest, as well as runs batted in, while the third of the Under 17 State representatives, Eleanor McClintock, finished runner-up in B grade and

Nikki Howard (Warriors) won the batting average. Georgia also won the C grade best and fairest from team mate Jenna Burston, with Warriors team mate Maddi Hann picking up runs batted in and veteran Reggie Johnson taking out the batting average. In the Under 13 grade MacKenzie Millard and Casey Koplin shared the best and fairest honours, from runner-up Montanta Millard, while the Robertson/ Martiensen Perpetual Trophy for the most promising player went to Emily Dawe. The Kath Sims Memorial Trophy, which is presented to the league’s best player at the State Championships went to Under 13 representative Imogen Walker, who pitched for the vast majority of the carnival despite not playing there regularly at club level. Walker caught the eye of Softball SA officials with her performances. More photos and full preliminary final results on page 36. Maggie Breen has pitched her team to another grand final berth with the seasons decider again set to be a clash between reigning titleholders Warriors and Demons. Demons won the toss and elected to field, and Breen got her side off to an excellent start, with Demons retiring the first six batters faced. Concordes also held their opponents scoreless through the first two innings, thanks in part to a sharp double play to retire the side with runners looming on second and third. It was in the third innings that Demons found some hitting, and scored two runs, despite a well executed trap play by Concordes to deny them a third. Michelle Lewis hit safely to start it off and was batted home by Kelly Cawthorne, both of whom had two safe hits for the day. Em Hart started the hitting for Concordes with a three bagger in the fourth, but was stranded at third by some good pitching and fielding by Demons. The score then remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth innings, when unfortunately for Concordes the heavens opened and players were hit with fierce rain and a cross

wind to make fielding a very difficult proposition. To their credit, Demons took advantage of the situation, and batted safely to push in four runs and put the game almost on ice with only one innings remaining. Concordes did not give up though, loading up the bases in the top of the final innings, but they could not manage that final hit and Demons sealed a well deserved victory, 6 runs to 0. Best for Concordes was Allana Jones, who had two safe hits and also pitched well with the rain pelting down. Demons were led well by Breen on the mount, and in the end the 11 safe hits to four told the tale of the day. The B Grade preliminary final was a thriller this week, with the very evenly matched Demons taking on Concordes. These sides also had a tough battle with the elements, and it showed a little with the amount of walks issued by both pitchers with the slippery ball. Demons started off well, scoring two runs in the first innings, but were quickly overtaken in the third when concordes scored three of their own.

Cody Manning then hit a three bagger, and was scored by Sharna Beck, to level the scores at three apiece. At the top of the fourth Concordes again edged ahead, with two runs thanks to safe hits from Emma Lawson and Amanda Winkley, but the game defining moment was the bottom of the fourth, when the top of the Demons line up batted in five runs to take a commanding three run lead. Cody Manning then hit her second three bagger of the match to be scored again, showing why she was a State representative this year. Concordes kept fighting and inched back run by run, and going into the final innings were only the one run behind. Demons however held their nerve and finished the final innings without conceding, to walk away with an exciting 10-9 victory. In the C grade game, Concordes were unable to repeat their shock victory from the week previous, and were no match for the more fancied Wanderers outfit. Safe hitting was the name of the game, with Wanderers players Fiona Finch, Teresa

Hatch and Rej Johnson all getting three safe hits from four for the match. In contrast Concordes were well held by the pitching of Johnson, as she allowed only three hits in total for the match. In the end Wanderers coasted to an easy victory, 17 runs to 1. Results A grade - Demons 6 (M. Breen, C. Manning, M. Lewis, K. Cawthorne 2; E. Taylor, G. Kemp, K. Millard) d Concordes 1 (A. SPORT Glenelg

River event could return in 2015

Donavan’s Landing on the Glenelg River was the rendezvous for an

enthusiastic group of swimmers last Monday. Twenty five swimmers

took part under perfect conditions, the river was as calm as a mill pond,

hence the name of the swim being Donovan’s Still Water Classic. Shortly after 10am 12 youngsters (pictured) up to the age of 15 tackled the 1200m course, consisting of two laps of 600m set out with buoys. This group was followed 15 minutes later by 10 swimmers, aged between 40 and 55 years, and later a third group of over 55s, the eldest of which were in their 70s, took on the course. Jade Opie was the fastest of the junior swimmers with a

The over 55s were close behind with Glen Hammond swimming the distance in 23 minutes. The idea for such a swim came from the group of a dozen Mount Gambier swimmers who took part in the long running Pier to Pub swim in Lorne, where 5000 swimmers took part. Plans are afoot to make the Donovan’s Still Water an official event next year.

SIMS SHIELD

GRAND FINAL West Gambier v Millicent To be played at Marist Park or Yahl on Tuesday, March 18 & Wednesday, March 19. Download the Lifestyle1 app for match reports and other cricket news. Below - The West girls might not look as glamorous at this weekend’s Barber Shield finals, as they did on Ladies Day last month, but they will be out in full force as the Roos look to round out their undefeated season with Mount Gambier cricket’s top prize.

Mount Gambier’s two Under 18 Men’s sides returned home from the 2014 SA Country Under 14 and 18 Junior Basketball Championships with Championship Pennants.Basketball Mount Gambier was represented by seven teams in the total of 107 in the 15 divisions of the Under 14 and 18 age groups. The Lakers Under 18 Men’s Division 1 side (pictured) has been the benchmark in junior tournaments this season and was “the hunted” over the weekend of the championships. Under the astute guidance of coach Simon Berkefeld and with five State players in the line-up, the Lakers were in control of their minor round games. In their opening game they defeated Port Pirie 52-25 and then followed up with a big score against Roxby Downs, 74-36. On Sunday the Lakers accounted for Eastern Hills 57-43 and finished the minor round by reversing the result against Mildura in the Victorian Championships to the tune of 43-32. The Lakers continued in their winning form in the minor finals, defeating Yorke Valley 64-49 and Port Pirie 50-38. These results set up a rematch against Mildura in the grand final. The Lakers got away to a strong start on the back of solid scoring by Stephen Sochacki and led 22-11 at the first break. Defences dominated the second quarter when a total of only 15 points were scored. The Lakers gradually edged away in the second half for a final 57-47 result. Sam Stafford had an outstanding weekend and played an effective leader’s game to finish in top gear with a personal tally of 26 points. The Lakers second Under 18 Men’s team played in Division 3 of the championships and enjoyed success with Coach Steve Zippel. They suffered a one point loss in their opening game against Port Lincoln and then went down 35-37 to Jamestown. The Lakers found winning touch on Sunday and defeated Strathalbyn 3733 and Adelaide Plains 49-24. They won a spot in the championship game with a 41-33 win over Adelaide Plains. The final featured a rematch against Jamestown when they reversed their earlier result into a 38-30 win. Amongst the consistent scorers for the weekend were Kobe Zippel, Tom Flett and Jordan Ross. The Under 18 Lakers’ women finished second in their pool after wins against Barossa Valley 35-16, Eastern Hills 50-36 and Great Southern 51-20. They went down 30-37 to Yorke Valley. Whyalla defeated the Lakers in the last gasp of the quarter final, 37-36. Rachael Hines, Danika Jolley and Eilish McKay were the leading players for the weekend. Millicent defeated Great Southern 37-21 in the grand final. The Lakers Under 14 Girls Division 1 side had a disappointing weekend. Throughout the season they have produced some very impressive performances, but then withdrew into passive periods of play. They were in winning positions in all their games but did not always get the job done. They won two of their four minor round games; a loss to Great Southern 30-42, a win over Yorke Valley 40-21, a loss to Port Lincoln 28-27 and a 2622 win over Riverland. The Lakers then finished the Championships well below their best form, losing to Broken Hill 28-42. The players struggled for consistency; Eliza Hunter, Olivia Patzel and Jordy Adams played well in patches. The Lakers Under 14 Girls second team worked tirelessly in the Championships for one win. They lost the quarter final to eventual winner Naracoorte, 17-38. The Lakers Under 14 Boys teams played in Division 3 and 5 respectively. The Division 3 side won two games but lost the quarter final 25-44 to Willunga. The Division 5 team also won 2 games but went down at Adelaide Plains in the semi-final, 19-31.Coaches Steve Reid and Justyn Hateley were pleased with the improvement shown by the players over the weekend. Naracoorte Association won the Under 14 Boy’s Div. 2and Under 14 Girl’s 3 titles while Millicent won The Under 18 Women’s Division 1 and Under 14 Girl’s Div.4 championship pennants. The Lakers Under 12 and 16 teams travel to Adelaide to compete in the SA Country Junior Basketball Championships this weekend, March 22 and 23, when 110 teams from the country regions of SA, Broken Hill and Mildura will compete in 17 divisions of the two age groups. LOCAL Liberals BOWLS Good

showing from SE players The highs and lows of competitive bowls was never more evident than that felt by players taking part in the Prestige Medley event held last weekend at the Victor Harbour Bowls Club. Representing the South Eastern division were the fours team of Belinda Pepper, Joy Bilney, Liz Copping and skipper Beryl Versluis; the triples team of Veronica Opie, Sharon Cavanagh, and skipper Jenny Waugh and the pairs team of Di Murch and skipper Heather Richards. Playing in pool two, the locals were drawn to meet the two Metro sides in their section first up and battle number one was against Region 12 Metro West, winners of the event for the last two years. The South Eastern division totally outclassed their city opposition causing a huge upset 56-28 winning on all three rinks. The South Easterners repeated the dose when it took on the Metro East side Region 10 in the next round, recording a convincing victory, 62-18, again winning on all rinks. Next up they faced the first of the other country region sides Lower North, and were bought down to earth with a decisive thud when the only winner was the triples by one shot, while the fours fell by two and the pairs by 10 shots, losing 40-51 overall. Another side defeat came in the next round against Region 5 Eyre Peninsula 38-55 where the triples and pairs teams went down and only the fours registered a win. The last match resulted in a win against Region 4 North Eastern 50-43, with a loss by two in the pairs. The South Easterners narrowly defeated Region 3 Upper Northern in the play off for third, which also meant they pocketed a share of the prize money. Region 1 men also competed in the Prestige Medley with the South Eastern region represented in fours by Sam Denton, Peter Mueller, Adam Wilson and skipper

David Lack; in triples by Robert Corner, Rod Gibbs and skipper John Scudds; and in pairs by Darryl Stopp and Geoff Hams. South Eastern lost to Metro West 38-48; defeated Eyre Peninsula 52-35; went down to Upper North 37-46 and to Metro North 35-52. The South Eastern men did finish on a high, though, with a 48-41 win over Lower North and finished fourth overall. Following the Prestige Medley the Schroeter Shield for men and the Kennedy Shield for women took place, also at Victor Harbor. This is an elite event where four teams of fours made up of players from the regions who have competed in the round robin event take on of teams from the metropolitan area. Fifteen year old Sam Denton earned selection in the men’s competition as lead in the fours, while three of our local female players, Di Murch, Sharon Cavanagh and Heather Richards, were selected to compete for the Kennedy Shield. The metropolitan teams won but the regional sides are narrowing the gap. An under 18 event is also put on for the juniors with the competition played in the form of singles, pairs, triples and fours. Again the country played the city and 15 year old Katie Roachock was selected to play in the triples and the fours. The country secured the same amount of shots as the city teams but lost on countback on games won. Pictured left (from top) - The third ranked South Eastern Ladies team; the Kennedy Shield team, which included three Soh East pleyers; Sam Denton, from Robe who was selecxted to represente the country in the Schroeter Shield; and 15 year old Katie Roachock, from the Mount Gambier & District RSL Bowling Club played in the junior competition.

Mount Gambier has a new sitting member with Liberal candidate Troy Bell sweeping to power over sitting Independent Don Pegler at the weekend’s South Australian election. The young family man did exactly what he had to do – secure more than 50 percent of first preference votes or again risk being undone by the allocation of preferences. But Bell’s 12 months of full time campaigning was rewarded with Mount Gambier one of the first seats called in the State – an early panacea for the Liberal Party who had earmarked the seat as one of the six it could win and form a majority government. And while when Lifestyle1 went to print it was still too close to call, the chances of that majority Liberal victory appeared slim with a hung parliament and a minority government working closely with two regional Independents the most likely scenario. Troy Bell did his job but the State has not followed. Bell picked up around an 8.7 percent swing, basically regarnering the Liberal vote that went the way of Don Pegler in 2010 – in the end, the time and money Troy Bell and the party put into winning Mount Gambier paid off. Speaking at his victory party Saturday night the relieved and excited new MP elect was at pains to point out what a team effort the victory had been.“It’s a great feeling when you look around this room and see so many supporters,” Bell said. “Both of the Liberal Party and of myself personally.” Bell also revealed it was a victory that almost didn’t happen after he initially turned down the offer the run. After considering the idea after it was presented to him by Liberal Party Mount Gambier branch president Alec van Riet, Bell initially turned it down. “I told the branch the impact on my family would be too much,” Bell said. That was a week before the February 18 deadline to nominate but after another sleepless night, wife Michaela told Troy he had made the wrong decision and should tell the branch he would run. “It’s a true testament to Michaela

regain Mount Gambier

and her support for me,” Bell said. Handing down his speech at around 8.45pm, it was not all celebrations given the new MP elect might not be part of a new State Liberal Government or at best a minority government, given the tight race across the rest of South Australia. “Hopefully we can win the State,” Bell said. “My greatest fear is that if the Liberal Party doesn’t get in, we’ll have four more years of a city-centric government.” Hours later and it still appeared a majority Liberal Government was only an outside chance. “This hasn’t come together because of a four week campaign or even the last 12 month campaign,” Bell said. “It is years and years of hard work of the other candidates... and those in the branch that kept the branch together when we didn’t have a member.” Being part of a team, and in particular, the Liberal team, has been a theme of Bell’s campaign and it was again in victory. “This is a team effort – that’s why I got into this,” Bell said. “No matter how good an independent is, they are on their own but we have a team behind us and in the end the team will always win out.” Bell singled

out Ashlyn Clark and Peter Bailey on a night when he was reluctant to name names. “Ashlyn Clark provided me with administration assistance so I could get out of the office and be seen,” Bell said. While Peter Bailey, who received a rousing applause as well, worked more than 30 volunteer hours a week for the past 12 months on the campaign. “We went into this with a very clear strategy on how we wanted to play this election campaign and we stayed the course of that,” Bell said. “The plan has paid off – it’s a team effort and a family effort.” And mentioning his family was the only time the successful candidate choked up. “It seriously was a pretty strenuous journey on my family as well,” Bell said. Of course, now the real work begins, as Troy Bell looks to deliver what has already been promised and continues to advocate strongly for this region in the halls of power in Adelaide – whoever is put in charge of those halls.
