fair coming to city hall

Mount Gambier will host its first ever Book Fair early next month.

The two day event on Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6 is being organised by the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier as a community event.

Any profits generated will go towards local projects focusing on literacy and reading skills. The City Hall will be filled with vendors selling new and second hand books at very competitive prices, plus there will be many book related activities for adult and junior readers.

With the slogan ‘More Books for your money, More money for your books’, the fair offers exciting opportunities for both buyers and sellers.

Six well known authors from the Limestone Coast, have agreed to participate in seminars on their experiences as professional writers.

There will also be workshops on creating Manga comics, illustrating for children’s books and using electronic devices to download and read books and magazines. The Mount Gambier Public Library is partnering with Rotary to offer a great range of activities over the weekend, and there will be food and drink

To launch the event on the Friday night, the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier will stage an entertaining debate/ discussion on the subject “That if you want to sell lots of books, then you need to feature FOOD, FANTASY or FORNICATION”. The team of three people tackling this controversial subject are Peter Goers (ABC Local Radio presenter), Doug Balnaves (Coonawarra Vigneron) and Dr Sarah Mott (Mount Gambier based academic and consultant). The City Hall will be the venue for this fun evening, and tickets will be on sale from around Mid March. On the Saturday and Sunday, the City Hall will be packed with over a dozen enthusiastic book sellers, offering a huge variety of new and second hand books.

Throughout both days, there will be informative presentations in the upstairs “Leadlight Room” by a number of local authors of note. They’ll cover everything from “How to write a fabulous fiction novel”, through “Creating a great biography, to “Recording your family and community history”.

a progressive and caring council The Grant Council intends to follow up this issue after the State Election to ensure we have a place for future further education in this State. It is imperative for our young people to be able to fill the skill shortages into the next decade.

Community Update Mayors Report Project funding Council has been notified that we have received $99,999 in State funding for the Browns Bay beach and tourist facilities. Council will need to match this grant $1 for $1. We have allocated some $50,000 to the project to date and further funding will be considered as part of the 2014/15 budget process.

Other contributions include $25,000 allocated from the Eight Mile Creek Hall Committee from the sale of the Hall, and many local residents and visitors will benefit from this project.

The other Council project to have received funding is the River and Coast Master Plan which, when finished, will provide a blue print for future aspirations for this area, and set priorities that we can budget towards to achieve these goals.

Support for the South East Animal Welfare League (SEAWL) As many residents are aware, Council is assisted by the SEAWL as this group run the Dog and Cat Rescue and a Pound. For years, this group has assisted both Council and residents with the uniting of lost or wandering dogs and cats. Previously, both City and Grant Councils have given small amounts of operational funding to the League to help cover operating costs.

Changing circumstances and the need to employ staff at the SEAWL means that both Councils will need to assist with a budgeted allocation to help run the facility. As the SEAWL fulfil part of our obligations under the Dog and Cat Management Act at lower costs than would be experienced if we carried out the work ourselves, the arrangement will hopefully be formalised shortly, and will be subject to annual review.

Future of TAFE vs Private RTOs In 2012 Minister Koutsantonis and the Department Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST) launched the Skills for All Program in Mount Gambier. The concept was to allow for free training across all sectors where people could upskill or train ready for work.

At the same time TAFE SA became a

stand-alone entity. Private Regional Training Organisations (RTOs) were encouraged to set up and also take part in the Skills for All program.

Now 18 months down the track, we are exactly where I predicted we would be.

RTOs, some without any scruples, took advantage of the Skills for All program, moved into town, hired sheds and rooms and ran what I feel are mickey mouse courses.

Checks and balances were not in place and a huge budget blow-out has now been the end result. The private RTOs encouraged people time and time again to come back through the revolving doors to gain certificates that would not lead to a real job but line the pockets of the RTOs. Courses that took months at TAFE were done in a number of weeks with what was supposedly the same qualifications. Now when people apply for a position these qualifications achieved are found to be a useless piece of paper.

Because of budget blow outs we are now seeing caps on courses along with reductions in availability and variety of courses for participants. The future training of our young people is in jeopardy because of this as the costs for the courses are above many of these people’s means.

The Skills for All program should have been a success story. I am also concerned for all of our regional TAFE campuses who may not be able to survive, or be viable, under this new cost structure for courses.

DFEEST were in charge of the funding for the Skills for All program, they should have undertaken due diligence and ensured systems were in place so that the funding could not be rorted. The State and Federal Government need to take responsibility and sort out the mess left behind by DFEEST. They need to support the previously successful TAFE system and look at limiting the number of RTOs and ensure those remaining in the system can prove they were above the practices of the rip-off merchants that rorted the system. It is imperative that we start to rebuild and give hope to the exceptional staff and reinvigorate our education system in this State.

Timberlink Mill at Tarpeena This Company, along with the community at Tarpeena, seem to be progressing well. Maintenance and upgrades at the Mill are starting to take effect. Local contractors are busy working on the projects as required.

The follow on benefits to the Mill, the employees, the local contractors and community is producing good outcomes for all.

The Company plans for a co-generation plant are also progressing. Who knows, this may be the catalyst needed to encourage other premises and businesses to Tarpeena and surrounds.

ANZAC Day As usual, the local RSL Branch will run a dawn service at Port MacDonnell with the road closure order being ratified by Council. The numbers are increasing each year and it is great to see more and younger people showing respect and gratitude to our fallen and returned soldiers. Anyone who hasn’t attended the Service and breakfast at the Bay is really missing a very moving event as the sun comes up over the sea.

Fire Season It’s good to be coming towards the end of the Fire Season. Thank you once again to our many volunteers and the men and women who make up our brigades, communications units and support groups. Along with our ambulance volunteers, First Responder Units and SES, we have escaped this season fairly well. Our Brigades and groups have assisted with incidents across the State or over the Border.

We are grateful for the time you give willingly to the cause of saving life and property. On behalf of the Council and community, congratulations on a job well done, and thank you.

It would be remiss of me not to also thank our ForestrySA staff and strike teams working with the Fire Kings and aircraft. The commitment by our State Government ensures that we have the security and capacity to reduce the damage wild fires can do during the fire season in the event of an outbreak within the Region.

Councillors and Staff Budget Deliberations We have held our annual township planning meetings and will shortly consider the first draft of the Port MacDonnell Master Plan, along with the completion of the Tarpeena Community

Plan. Workshops are being undertaken and scheduled for Elected Members and staff to prepare our budget and progress some of the suggestions and projects from the township meetings.

We are hopeful of adopting our draft budget in June 2014.

Off road Vehicles and Beach Access Grant Council is very actively chasing up with the Local Government Association (LGA) to see if we can progress the idea of 4WD and Motor Bike Parks either on Crown Land or private land for partnerships across the State. There will always be the issues associated with multi-use areas on Coastal Reserves. We need to work together to get the desired results for public use of reserves and coast lines and protect the rights of each user group and ensure we also preserve many of our pristine coastal parks. Management of these areas is critical but closing them off to the general public isn’t the answer. Both Trevor Smart and I will ensure this issue is followed up after the State Election to progress the issue.

South East Local Government Association Economic Diversification Project The Diversification Project was set up by the Labor Government. We have seen the timber industry being reinvigorated through the above project and the reduction in the Australian Dollar.

Local Mills, including McDonnells who received $4.5M, have used this money to update their technology and expand their markets. Whiteheads Timber Sales, Timberlink and Carter Holt Harvey have also undertaken upgrades. This has been a good news story.

The Diversification Project has expanded and will encourage other Primary Industries over the next 12 months to do the same, expansion of markets into Asia, China and the Philippines should see confidence grow and agricultural enterprises reap the benefits. Hopefully we will see the potato industry also reap the rewards of other markets.

We will continue to push the Federal Government to change the labelling laws to give consumers the better choice of ‘Australian Grown or Produced Products’ over cheap imports.

Geared2Drive (G2D) Geared2Drive is a learner driver program developed to support young people to gain their provisional driver’s licence. The program focuses on training in safe driving, risk management, communication and managing peer relationships, to minimise the risks young drivers face on our road. Council’s program is gratefully supported by the Barry Maney Group, Scott Petroleum, and Group Training Employment (GTE) and aims to mentor over 24 young people per annum with the support of volunteers and the community.

Council Community Grants Council will be mailing invitations to eligible non-profit organisations to submit applications for Community, Halls and Sports Grants in March. Groups will have until the end of April to apply for funds to support minor facility works, projects and events to be included in the 2014/15 financial year. Guidelines and application forms will be available for download from Council’s website next month.

Staff Bail Out Council staff are again supporting Whitelion & Blue Light Bail Out at Old Mount Gambier Gaol on 23d May. The funds used to bail out staff ‘inmates’ helps support the region’s disadvantaged young people. Donations towards the cause may be made online at www.whitelionbailout.org.au or Council offices.

Staff are also involved in Relay for Life on 15–16 March and are accepting donations.

Council staff have raised about $6,500 for various causes and charities in the past 12 months and appreciate the support of the local community.

2014 Australia Day Celebration & Awards About 700 people attended Council’s Australia Day Celebration at the beautiful Yahl Cricket Grounds.

The free family focused event featured live music by the Mount Gambier City Band, Katie Tourney, Dennis O’Carroll and members of the Mount Gambier Disability Services Activity Centre. Children were entertained on the Port MacDonnell Lions Club merry-go-round and a bounce castle, and about 90 vintage and veteran cars were on display. Australia Day Ambassador Ms Pat Rix, Artistic Director of the Tutti Ensemble and a social inclusion advocate, helped present Australia Day Awards.

Council supports the Australian Red Cross SE Community Passenger Network Transport Program, which provides a service for socially, financially and transport disadvantaged persons. With support from Bendigo Community Bank, the program will now include 12 of Council’s communities. For information contact Australian Red Cross on 8725 3622.

ChemClear will be travelling throughout South Australia in April/ May 2014 and Council is encouraging people to register any unwanted Ag chemicals for collection.

Eligible Chemicals are collected for free as long as they are in their original containers (drumMUSTER eligible) with readable labels and are not mixed with any other product. Collection is available for chemical that do not meet these requirements at a per litre/kg fee.

A tear-off map has recently been produced featuring the District Council of Grant and streets of Port MacDonnell. The maps will be available to visitors and printing was made possible through the support of local businesses. To be included on the next print run please contact Linda at Council.

Tarpeena Community Plan Council has commenced its budget preparations for the 2014-2015 financial year with a workshop scheduled in March to provide Elected Members an opportunity to contribute their thoughts and wishes for the coming financial year.

The recently approved Tarpeena Community Plan will be considered in conjunction with other budget deliberations and the community is welcome to forward suggestions or proposals for consideration in this

Tarpeena Township Signage Consideration is being given to options for town signage including location and design. Improved town signage will enhance the township approaches and lift the general area. Further information on the outcomes of any consultation will be advised in due course.

This project is now proceeding as per our funding proposals, with the following actions underway:• Construction Tenders have now closed • Proposals for provision of fuel facilities have closed and are to be considered by Council • Project Management – an internal project team has been formed, with Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) personnel assisting Council as Contract/Project Manager. Council will be seeking a Site Supervisor shortly.

There is still the issue of establishment of a Port Authority and the possible handing over of facilities to Council to be considered. Further information from the State Government is required prior to Council assessing its position on these matters. It is expected that works will commence in May 2014. The boat ramp will remain available during the works.

Blackfellows Caves Boatramp Project The Blackfellows Caves Boatramp upgrade works are due to commence with the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) announcing it will undertake the works at a cost of $450,000. This is a great outcome for the community at Blackfellows Caves and visitors to the area. While the project is being undertaken by DPTI, the project has been developed in conjunction with Council, and Council will take over care and control of the boatramp on completion of the project.

The existing ramp is to be realigned to provide access to deeper water and will feature two 4.1m wide launching lanes incorporating a central fixed landing. The works will begin by early March with completion expected by June 2014. The

boatramp will be unavailable during this period.

Council is confident that the maintenance and upgrade works being undertaken to boatramps throughout the District will ensure that commercial and recreational fishers and visitors to the area enjoy excellent facilities.

The Mount Gambier Photography Social Group will be holding “An Exhibition of Our Photos” at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex Gallery in March.

The Exhibition has no set theme but members have been encouraged to display work they are proud of. The purpose of the group is to socialise with other photographers, to discuss and to learn from each other. The informal group started about 5 years ago and members hail from around Mount Gambier and district and include a couple from Victoria. Over 40 members from the community ranging from people in the 20s to retirees make up the group, and all members are encouraged to contribute and share.

Members have a wide range of photographic experience and skill level, and use equipment ranging from basic ‘point and shoot’ to SLR cameras. Entry to the exhibition is free and open seven days a week until March 29. Mount Gambier Photography Social Group meetings are held at the South Australian Hotel on the first Wednesday monthly at 7pm. I have received an email from a reader in need of my wisdom and assistance this week. Let me share it with you.

“Dear Robbie, I work in a local cafe. Recently a school student made the comment that my food was similar in quality to something that looks like a Polly Waffle (Robbie note – does anyone know where I can get a Polly Waffle).

Essentially she was saying my food was really bad.

What should I do? Natalie from Nangwarry.” Well, Natalie, this is a difficult one as I’ve never sampled your food. As much as these sort of comments hurt, sometimes you have to reflect on them and decide if there is any truth to them. Is your food bad?

Are you possibly one of those cafes that sell lots of healthy food that no one wants to eat? Let me provide you with a handy check list. Do you serve Kitchener buns? Do you serve up lovely deep fried – not oven baked – hot chips? Are cans of Pepsi

or Coke easily available for people? Do you serve up the occasional Hawaiian pizza? Do you sell Polly Waffles? If you’re answering in the negative well it’s probably time to get in the mirror and take a long hard look. The young person was right.

Who would have thunk it?

But if you answered yes to these glorious items then there is only one possible reason the young person said this. Quite simply, they are a child. Let me expand a little. Children are fundamentally stupid creatures. They are born unintelligent and it takes many years for this to change. In the meanwhile the rest of us have to encounter their stupidity on a day to day basis.

There is a whole industry based on the fact children are stupid. You might have heard of it. It’s called schools. Schools exist because children are dumb and someone has to try and help them with their dumbness. These days they are actually encouraged to share their ideas and opinions. Isn’t that ridiculous? What would they know? They don’t even have fully developed brains yet. Have they ever done anything worthwhile? No. Not that long ago they used to poo

in their pants. They had to be fed by someone else.

They couldn’t even fulfil the fundamentals of staying alive as a human and now they think they have a right to tell people what they think. Back in the day, children were “seen but not heard”. This wasn’t a cruel way for old fashioned people to assert themselves and stop children from expressing themselves. It was to save children from embarrassing themselves with their ignorance.

There’s a reason children are born with two ears and only one mouth. They should be doing twice as much listening to smart people as expressing their own stupid thoughts. Let’s face facts. They probably don’t even know what a Polly Waffle is. Again, can someone please email me

I bet all the kids are Googling Polly Waffles on their fancy smart phones right now with their grotesque overdeveloped texting thumbs. No one could trust them to do it because it’s not a job for stupid people.

All right, I’m prepared to concede that this is quite an exaggeration and has been proved wrong over and over again. What do children get to be? Justin Bieber! I think I’ve proved my point.

US singer Dolly Parton is in Australia to announce the launch of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library - a charitable program that aims to improve the literacy of children across the country’s disadvantaged communities and give them a better chance at life. The program has been picked up by Unted Way Glenelg and executive officer Nicole Reefman attended the Dolly Parton launch, along with Portland Aluminium Plant manager Peter Chellis, as a project partner. Ms Reefman praised the partnership between the two organisations. “Portland Aluminium has made a significant commitment

to the Imagination Library program,” Ms Reefman said. “With children living in the Glenelg Shire ranked as some of the most vulnerable in all of the Local Government Authorities in Victoria our shared goal is to halve within five years, the number of children who are not school-ready.”

Ms Reefman also spent time with David Dotson, President of the Dollywood Foundation, gaining a greater understanding of the philanthropic work Dollywood Foundation.

The Imagination Library, formally braded as READLEARNSUCCEED was launched in the Glenelg Shire in July last year by Premier Dr Denis Napthine. The IL has been

extremely successful with more than 300 children from the shire registered to receive monthly books. The program has been embraced by the community with many local people choosing to make the $6 per month donation through Workplace Giving.

For the first time in Australia, Dolly will be sharing her personal story as a child growing up in a disadvantaged community.

“If you can read, you can learn about anything,” said Dolly. The Imagination Library is delivering one free, age appropriate book per month to children aged 0 - 5. Dolly is urging parents to read books that inspire their dreams and hopes for life to their

children. Currently 735,000 children around the world receive a free, age appropriate book each month.

Through her charitable Dollywood Foundation, Dolly’s goal is to inspire a love of reading and learning among all children and to date, she and her local partners have gifted more than 56million books to children in four countries. Australian statistics reveal that up to one in five local school students is not ready to start school when enrolled.

Whilst studies show that lower literacy and education levels can be a precursor to social issues such as unemployment and poverty - commonly leading to a cycle of disadvantage.

In Australia, The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is run by United Way Australia and its affiliates, a charity organisation that is working closely with partners across the country, such as Rotary and Penguin Children’s Books, to deliver free books to as many children as possible. Robbie Warren life celebrates 25 years making easier Feature I THE COMMERSH & ROBBIE WARREN CELEBRATE 25 YEARS

Some things never change Twenty five years continuous service in one job is impressive by anyone’s standards and even more so when you consider it’s in the hospitality industry but this weekend the face of the Commercial Hotel in Mount Gambier, Robbie Warren, will clock up that 25 year milestone as licensee of the popular watering hole.

As with most significant milestones, it’s a chance to reflect and for Robbie that has meant looking back to when he first got involved in the hotel game – a simpler and more lucrative time. As recently as a year ago in a story with the Australian Hotels Association Robbie reminisced about his early days in the pub game, when the secret to success was as simple as “a good beer made a good pub”.

And Robbie has been at the coalface of every evolution of the Australian hotel industry since he and his father first started running the Commercial

Hotel in Naracoorte. “I worked in a pub in London and when I came back I said to my father we should sell off some of the farm and buy a pub – so we did,” Robbie said. It was in 1978 that Robbie spent six months driving a double decker bus tour across Europe spending three months in a West London pub, the legacy of which was a strong taste for hospitality and his lifelong devotion to the Queens

Park Rangers.

On the surface, since convincing his father Max to get into the pub game not much has changed, Robbie is still pouring beers and hearing some amazing stories from colourful pub patrons 34 years later and the Commercial Hotel in Naracoorte is still a popular watering hole, it is just known as the Bushman’s Arms Hotel. Of course, when you scratch below

Some things never change from page 33 Country pubs have long been the centre of any regional community and Robbie has always made sure he was not just the good bloke behind the bar but also an active member of the community in which he worked. For Robbie the best way to achieve that in the early days was through sport and during his time in Naracoorte Robbie was a best and fairest winner at the football club, a key member of the Naracoorte Footballers Cricket Club and is a premiership player for Naracoorte United Soccer Club. In 1985, the Warren family sold their Naracoorte pub with parents Max and Hope heading to Adelaide to run the Gilbert Hotel and Robbie and then wife, Wendy, returning to the original family farm at Tantanoola and taking over the quaint Tantanoola Tiger. It was a busy three years for the couple who had their two children, Jock and Anna, while running the Tiger and of course Robbie spent whatever time he was not pulling a beer or looking after his young family on the sporting field, enjoying premiership success in both football and cricket in 1986. At the end of 1988, the young Warren family moved to Mount Gambier and in January 1989 took over the Commercial Hotel and that’s where you still find Robbie today, 25 years later. He remembers the early days at the hotel with fondness. “When I first got here there was a lot of Eastern European guys and people from the Second World War,” Robbie said. “It wasn’t about drinking, they certainly weren’t a bunch of drunks – it was a social time and they told some great stories in those days.” Robbie developed genuine connections with many of his regulars in those early days at the Commercial Hotel. “I delivered eulogies for most of those guys,” he said.

Those were the days when a handful of loyal customers would be at the doorstep at opening time. “Not to drink, in fact most of those guys didn’t

drink,” Robbie said. “They just wanted to talk.” And Robbie, and assistant manager Linda Boylan, who has been part of the Commercial family for the past seven years, say there are still a handful of guys that do that now.

“They just grab a soft drink and have a good long chat,” Linda said.

Robbie remembers the Commercial as a colourful

establishment, a traditional pub where there was live music every weekend and while the pub has enjoyed two makeovers in Robbie’s time, the commitment to live music has been the one thing that hasn’t changed since he first walked in the door. “We still are a live music venue and three or four nights a week there is something on here,” Robbie said. “Over

Unfortunately the other thing that has started adding up is the hoops the hotel industry has to jump through – the paperwork and compliance issues across pokies, alcohol service and payroll have ensured pulling a good beer, listening to a tall story and enjoying a knock off drink with your loyal staff are no longer the pillars on which a business can be run. It has dramatically changed the dynamic of the pub industry too. “For the first 10 years I was in hotels, all my friends were from the pub, they were all customers,” Robbie said. “That just isn’t the case anymore. Robbie is quick to point out he has been blessed with good staff over the journey headed by Gidget Whitehead, who at 64 years of age has been part of the Commercial Hotel team for 25 years, starting three weeks after Robbie took over the reins in 1989. “We have been lucky and had some really good people and people that have worked for us for a long time.” Over the past seven years alone, they have had 122 staff on the books and it has been the lowest turnover of Robbie’s 30-plus years in the hotel industry. The Commercial Hotel’s finance and administration manager Suzanne Judd has also been critical, ensuring she deals with the mountain of paperwork and lets Robbie do what he does best – serve customers. “It is the social side of the pub and the people that is the greatest thing,” Robbie said. “I just come downstairs to work in a social environment every day of my life.” Robbie is still conscious of his role in the community as well as the sporting theme of his hotel career continued. He is a 20 year player for the Apollo Soccer Club and the hotel is a prolific sponsor of local sporting clubs, as well as local charities and volunteer organisations.

CYCLING Road The road cycling season has kicked off in style with a regional event for the South West Cylcing District earlier this month. Riders from Mount Gambier, Hamilton, Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Camperdown, Horsham, Portland and Ararat competed in the Condah hosted event. Mount Gambier had a contingent of six senior and four junior riders. Daniel Herrewyn and his brother Ashley were placed in the A grade, while Scott Waters and Sean Angus competed in B grade. These grades began together to cover a course of 87kms part of which involved five laps around a hilly and windy circuit. Racing was hard and fast and riders were soon separated from their groups. While Darcy Woolley (Warrnambool) proved to be too strong in the A grade, Daniel Herrewyn came in a respectable fourth placing.

The B grade finished not long after the A grade and Scott Waters sprinted in to claim second behind Wayne Worden, of Port Fairy, who was able to hang on to the A Grade group. C and D grades competed in a 75km race which was four laps of the circuit but was contested with the same gusto as the higher grades. Darryl Patzel was Mt Gambier’s sole representative of C Grade and Spek Peake contested D Grade. With the C and D riders separating out on the course after a mass start, both groups came to a sprint finish. The Mount Gambier boys proved too strong for their respective grade and were crowned district champions. Mount Gambier junior riders were able to hold their heads high in their championships as well. Luke Waters rode in the Under 11 event over 6km and put in a solid performance marking the start of his second road season to claim third. The winning rider from Portland,

came in a time of 11:28.

Josh Waters and Brayden Burston were assured of a placing as they only had a Hamilton competitor to race against. The riders took off together at the start of the 11km distance but the boys proved to be too strong for Heidi Bast, from Hamilton.

In a tight tussle, Josh and Brayden fought on strongly with Brayden claiming the line honours from Josh. Jack Patzel, competing in his first road season as an Under 17, had to contest a 46km race which completed two laps of the senior circuit.

Jack was the only South Australian rider and with the lead changing constantly it was the Victorian boys that banded together to claim the championship with Jack riding in strongly to fifth position.

BOWLS Seniors

Supa Series is a keeper

A Seniors Supa Series for the over 60s, was introduced this year by Bowls SA as a classic event to be held annually.

Mount Gambier clubs hosted the new event at the end of last month and it was described as a thoroughly enjoyable competition and received with enthusiasm by all those who took part.

The contest was for cosmopolitan teams of four in any order to play one game of 12 end fours then split for 2-4-2 pairs 8 ends then regroup for another game of fours of 10 ends. The event was held over two days and was hosted by the Mount Gambier Bowling Club and Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowling Club.

Although entries were down this time round due to the late inclusion into the bowls program, the organisers were happy with the success of the trial run and are determined that in the future with the event firmly established in the bowling calendar the tournament will come back bigger and better next season. The intention is for the Seniors Supa Series to develop and become the feature event of the season. A total of nine areas throughout South Australia will conduct the same competition at various times during the season and culminate in

a playoff of all winners.

Bowls SA, the Mount Gambier City Council and APIA Insurance were the major sponsors of the local tournament.

two host clubs, as well as composite teams, which included players from Frances, Bordertown and Keith. Approximately 18 teams competed each day. There were no four game winners over the two days but with three wins and 29 shots up the Waikerie team of John Segner, Roger Davies, Barry Harden and skipper Gary Burschi was announced as the winner on day one, ahead of the Mount Gambier team of Marika Heaver, John Heaver, Marg Marshall and skipper Noel Miller.

motor cancer fundraiser with a twist The hard working teams in this year’s Limestone Coast Relay For Life are all fired up and ready to walk all night and have a great deal of fun while raising money for a good cause. One of the teams, Helloworld Highflyers, is getting prepared for the inaugural Miss Relay competition. The Miss Relay competition will be held around midnight and teams will be asked to ‘dress to impress’ one of the boys in their team.

The “Miss Relay” entrants will then be judged and the winner take out the sought after “2014 Miss Relay”, along with a great team prize. Competition will be tough so many of the teams are getting prepared early. Harvey World Travel, soon to be re-branded Helloworld, owner/manager, Grant Horrigan, is pictured in one of his possible Miss Relay outfits, after being dressed by some of the girls in his team.

Grant said he did take a bit of convincing for the photo shoot. “I’m not sure how the girls eventually talked me in to it but in the end its for a good cause and one that touches so many that I thought I’d do what had to be done,” Grant said. It’s Harvey World Travel’s second time at Relay and their team Helloworld Highflyers is proud to be part of such a worthwhile and well run event. “So many of our families and our customers are touched by cancer we appreciate the opportunity to make a difference and raise much needed funds for Cancer Council SA,: Grant said. “Knowing the money we raise helps provide accommodation at Greenhill and Flinders Lodges for regional patients when they have no choice but to have their treatment in Adelaide, the 24 hour Cancer Council helpline and of course towards vital research, makes dressing up as a girl not that tough.”
