era at law firm

There’s been a changing of the guard at one of Mount Gambier’s longest standing law firms as two of D.M. Aston & Co have taken over the reins and taking the firm into the future with a new name – ASW Lawyers Pty Ltd. Former firm principal Don Aston will continue as a consultant for ASW Lawyers but it is now the turn of Sarah Salmon, who has been with the firm 14 years, and John Williamson, who has nine years

with the business, to call the shots and deliver the same quality, professional service clients of Aston’s have always experienced and come to expect. The duo has purchased the firm and is looking to continue to build its reputation within the local community. Remaining at their 13 Sturt Street premises, the firm boasts more than 100 years of practicing law in the region with both Sarah and John excited to be continuing the proud tradition of this

local legal institution. Sarah grew up in Mount Gambier, studying her Bachelor of Laws with Honours at the University of Adelaide, before returning as a solicitor at D.M. Aston & Co. John’s legal career technically started as a police detective in Mount Gambier before he too went to Adelaide to pursue a law degree at Flinders University. John gained plenty of practical experience before returning to

Mount Gambier. He is currently a board member of UFS Chemist and is part of the Mount Gambier Hospital Health Advisory Council. Sarah and John can take care of all your wills, estates, conveyancing and commercial law needs with John also practicing in the area of criminal and family law. Call into the 13 Sturt Street offices today or call the friendly staff on (08)8723 3300.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY It’s time for the truth by Robbie Tansel

don’t miss out March 14 & 15 - Looking Through A Glass Onion – John Waters SIR ROBERT HELPMANN THEATRE, MOUNT GAMBIER (March 14) & HAMILTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE, HAMILTON (March 15) A homage to the music, mystery and memory of John Lennon. This is the last Australian tour of the show before John Waters heads to the US with the critically acclaimed show.

Gamble Responsibly

Now that I have a government job working in the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages, I occasionally get access to government information that the majority of people don’t. Generally this is completely by accident as realistically I shouldn’t be trusted with any important information. This week I stumbled on something that will blow all of your minds. It deals with one of the hottest issues at the moment: the culling of sharks. The fact is we’ve all only been getting half of the story. For those unaware, the Western Australian government recently made the decision to start culling the number of sharks in their waters following a number of fatal attacks on people. The government have been coming under attack for this decision but armed with my new information I think they’re completely justified. It turns out the shark attacks have not been random attacks by

wild animals simply acting according to their natural instincts. The attacks have been deliberate, coordinated attacks and actually a declaration of war by all water creatures around the world on the human race. Obviously for there to be a war there has to be a reason. And as with any war, it’s hard to just pinpoint one issue that has triggered the declaration of war. It’s important to state here that the sharks aren’t the brains behind the operation. For those of you whose next guess would be those smart little dolphins you’d be wrong too. It’s whales! Whales certainly have plenty to be angry about. As far as they’re concerned people have been waging a war on them for centuries. It doesn’t matter if it was hunting for food, hunting for whale oil or hunting for “scientific research”, humans have been attacking whales for centuries now. The whales all got together and made a decision to do something about it. That’s when they got the dolphins and sharks involved. The dolphins are key strategists but still take their orders from

the whales. It’s pretty difficult to argue with forty to a hundred thousand kilograms of blubber. Mind you those trainers on The Biggest Loser do it on a daily basis. The dolphins weren’t that difficult to get involved. They’ve suffered their fair share of issues with humans over the years. Sure we’ve all been told at Seaworld how the dolphins love doing their tricks and it’s what they do in nature anyway but that’s not the truth. For years, dolphins have been deliberately getting themselves captured as a way of gathering information about humans and their weaknesses. Likewise, for all these years people have been offering ideas as to why whales beach themselves. I’m able to tell you all now that they have also been

using it as an opportunity to gather information. A rarely reported fact is that they also pick the pockets of people who are nearby or try to roll them back into the water. They use this money to fund their activities. As for sharks, they’re pretty happy to wrap their teeth into anything that will bleed so they didn’t have to be asked twice. Quite clearly there is something pretty fishy going on. Crocodiles, frogs and polar bears are yet to take a position on either side so I’d suggest we’re all really nice to them as we may need their support. ADVERTORIAL I 2014 SE FIELD DAYS What is different about the South East Field Days at Lucindale from most others? It is the focus on catering for every need of site holders and visitors, from grandparents to toddlers while raising vital funds for their community. Yakka Park is an easy to get around site that is dust free, with numerous amenities and a wide range of food sites. For the less mobile, courtesy transport around the various sites and attractions is available. The 2014 event will be staged on the 21st and 22nd March. That pleasant family experience has attracted great crowds for the last few years and that in itself has ensured a vast majority of the 600 plus site holders receive the patronage they need to make their trip worthwhile. “The region is renowned for its highest quality foods and wines and there are plenty of opportunities to

sample these, but there is everything from jewellery, arts, crafts, education, business planning, finance, cropping, livestock development, machinery, children’s activities – you name it and it will probably be there,” Field Days secretary Lyn Crosby said. “The field days will be staging the Australian Yard Dog championships at our 2014 event. It will be the fourth time the national championships have been staged at the Lucindale Field Days which is a big honour,” Lyn added. Fresh and popular entertainment is also provided for visitors and there are exciting feature acts booked in for 2014. There is nothing quite like the main feature act, “The Lumberjack Show”. This international act is highly action packed, humorous and interactive and caters for all demographics. This funny family entertainment has

an event not to be missed

been thrilling crowds in Canada, New Zealand and now Australia for 10 years. Now it is your chance and this act is worth a visit to these field days on its own. Unfortunately the previously announced second feature act, Tony Golder and his amazing horse Regall has had to cancel

due to an injury to the horse. However, the good news is he has been replaced by Factory Freestyle Motorcross (FMX). For those of you who saw Josh Burdon and his amazing aerial feats last year, or those who missed it, this year presents an opportunity to be amazed again, or

Lifestyle1.net - 023

for the first time. This year this act will be staged at a different site, on Rayner Road near the Rowdy Gate. Throw in great entertainment by the popular Don Wishart in concert, and of course, the ever popular fashion parades, with normal shaped models of all ages displaying

the latest practical fashions that are available on-site and not only look fantastic, but also fit! So whether you are 9 or 90, fit or less active, or hungry or thirsty, there are plenty of reasons to attend these family friendly field days. Perhaps we will see you there?

Photo caption: The wonderfully entertaining Lumberjack Show has been entertaining audiences in Australia and internationally for 10 years – you can see them at this year’s South East Field Days at Lucindale.

The Mount Gambier Photography Social Group will be holding “An Exhibition of Our Photos” at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex Gallery in March. The Exhibition has no set theme but members have been encouraged to display work they are proud of. The purpose of the group is to socialise with other photographers, to discuss and to learn from each other. The informal group started about 5 years ago and members hail from around Mount Gambier and district and include a couple from Victoria. Over 40 members from the community ranging from people in the 20s to retirees make up the group, and all members are encouraged to contribute and share. Members have a wide range of photographic experience and skill level, and use equipment ranging from basic ‘point and shoot’ to SLR cameras. Entry to the exhibition is free and open seven days a week until arch 29. Mount Gambier Photography Social Group meetings are held at the South Australian Hotel on the first Wednesday monthly at 7pm. For more information about joining the group or about the exhibition please email Wayne Bigg on mtgphotosocialgp@ biggzie.com. Above - Photo courtesy of Heather Reilly.

Advertorial I MEGAN LESLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

Capturing life’s special moments It was four years ago when Megan picked up a camera for the first time. “My close friend introduced me to photography and I quickly fell in love with it,” Megan said. Over the last few years Megan has slowly been building up her photography business that began with her interest in creating portraits of friends and family. “I started photographing people about three years ago and while I still do portraits, what I really love is weddings,” Megan said. “Seeing two people in love, spending the day with them, with their family and friends and being able to document such a special day for them is amazing. I love being able to capture that for them and present them with beautiful images that they’ll cherish forever and will be a family heirloom.” A qualified accountant, Megan has returned to Mount Gambier to focus on her true love of photography, after spending a decade in Adelaide studying and working in the commerce and accounting industry. “I still have family and friends here so it is great to be back,” she said.

Megan has also started to take more newborn images. “Rather than traditionally posed newborn photos, I prefer to capture a snapshot of the first few weeks in the baby’s life. This lends itself to more of a ‘lifestyle’ feel, and I find it highlights the special bond between parents and their little one,” Megan said. “I visit families at their home within a few

weeks of birth and spend a few hours photographing them, capturing these precious moments with their new family.” For details about her wedding or portrait packages, you can email Megan at megan@meganlesley.com Above - Megan Fox of Megan Lesley Photography.

“For no less than the fourteenth consecutive time, the MS Europa is the only cruise ship worldwide to have been awarded the coveted distinction “5 stars plus”. This is the type of high-class acclaim, as published on the MS Europa’s website, that is getting Portland traders stocking their shelves and giving their windows an extra shine, as they prepare for the arrival of the first ever cruise ship to their shores on March 8. The arrival of the MS Europa is expected to create one of the region’s biggest trading days, with 330 guests and 285 crew docking at the Port of Portland on the Saturday. It’s expected about 60 travellers, who form part of the Germanspeaking luxury cruise ship patronage on board the MS Europa, will remain in Portland surrounds, as well as a large number of the ship’s crew. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor John Northcott said the most exciting aspect of

this visit to Portland was the potential for many cruise ships to discover the Glenelg Shire. “Once word of mouth gets out about the exclusive piece of paradise that is Glenelg Shire, I expect there will be a flurry of similar enquiries from other cruise ship companies,” he said. “From Portland, to Casterton, to Heywood to Nelson, there is so much more to our region than first meets the eye – and what first meets the eye is also impressive. While we need to ensure we put our best foot forward for this ship’s arrival, our location already holds its own in being one of the must-see locations in Australia. I’m confident that the businesses and community will make our guests feel very welcome as only we know how.” As well as a host of activities planned in Portland to create a holiday atmosphere, Glenelg Shire Council has approved increased opening hours at the Portland Library

tickets on sale now

for Saturday’s cruise ship arrival (hours will be 10am4:30pm), to ensure visitors have the most convenient stay possible, with access to internet and other IT resources at this facility. The Portland Arts Centre will also be open from 9.30am – 4.30pm on this Saturday, with free entry for patrons. The current exhibition, on display until March 22, is the ‘South Western Interclub Competition’, which includes photographic displays from the Portland Camera Club, the Warrnambool Camera Club and the Colac Camera Club. The Maritime Discovery Centre and History House will be open as per usual weekend operations and have no cover charge for this day. The current location of the MS Europa is available via the following link http: //www.hl-cruises.com/ships/ ms-europa/ship-positions/ Check council’s website for the plethora of activities planned for the foreshore and surrounds.

Tickets for one of the Greater Hamilton region’s premier cultural events, the annual Promenade of Sacred Music, are now on sale. The 2014 PoSM will again transform Hamilton and its surrounding churches into live music concert halls where renowned artists and performers will showcase their beautiful music from April 4 to 6 . Events Marketing and Development Office Kathy Annett said the event was important for the Greater Hamilton economy. “Hamilton is one of regional Australia’s cultural hubs, and it’s a credit to our region that we host such a wellrespected event as this,” Ms Annett said. “The Promenade not only showcases our cultural strengths, it also brings tourists to town which is great for our local economy.” The Opening night, Friday April 4, will see the return of ‘La Compania’ at St Andrews Presbyterian church, Australia’s pre-eminent period instrument ensemble specialising in music of the renaissance and early baroque. The world renowned choir - ‘Gloriana’ is also returning after 10 years. They will be performing on Saturday night at St Marys Catholic Church. There are many exciting performances planned over the three days, including the popular free concerts. Tickets for the 2014 Promenade of Sacred Music are on sale now and can be purchased from the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre, 113 Brown Street Hamilton or online www.hamiltonpac. com.au. Free buses will be available for Coleraine and Tarrington performances with bookings essential through the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre. Further information including full details of all the performances of the PoSM are available from www.promenade ofsacredmusic.com.au or by contacting council’s events marketing and development officer Kathy Annett on (03)5573 0239.

ADVERTORIAL I GARDENARIUM I feel there might be a tinge of Autumn in the air since that much needed rain came. The nights seem to be very cool, with dew and crisp morning - I think summer is nearly over. Sad really as it took a while to get going and then came with a vengeance. The blast of heat this summer certainly put many off their gardens, however the demand for water features and fountains at Gardenarium and The Pot Shop was overwhelming and we have sold out of most of our styles. Incredibly, we are now having a massive fountain

Autumn’s on the way

and Pot clearance sale on all of our remaining stock, including ex-demo water features at hugely reduced prices up to 50% and 60% off (see advert adjacent page) so we can make way for a new container of pots due to land soon and of course a new range of chimineas and firepits from Mexico. This can only mean one thing, bargains all round. Many of our exclusive styles and the last of the well known Kilkee brand and Tivoli brands of waterfeatures are to be cleared. These were well known Australian brands that have sadly closed down with most of the styles no longer available. They range from traditional style water features to Ultra modern like the Bordeaux, free standing and wall fountains. We have one huge round fountain, with base pond and pedestal in tiers, with a statue on top

or this can be changed to something geometric to make a modern style that would suit being in the middle of a driveway or large lawned area and would make a striking focal point. Many of the cascading water features can be hooked up to run into a swimming pool and the wall fountains are particularly suited to courtyards and indoor patio style room, where the sound of running water is not only soothing but cooling especially on hot days. Gardenarium and The Pot Shop have one each of three exclusive Black water features with square base pond, one with three square columns, all emitting water, one with a handmade glass bowl cascading and one with a black egg shaped feature that are sure to be exclusive to each buyer as we only ever had one of each made, these are half price in the sale. Many of the traditional style column water features in a small base pond, birdbath types are also on clearance and many have or can be fitted with solar pumps, so they can be postioned out in the garden and well away from powerpoints. All of the glazed, terracotta, concrete, sandstone and

lightweight pots are on the clearance also, with our terracotta at such ridiculously low prices you couldn’t even buy a comparable sized pot in plastic for the same cost !!! $5, $10 and $15 pot specials will also be on throughout the sale. With our exclusive importing, we have full control over our glaze colours, meaning there is just about every colour you can imagine. From purple, to bright orange, black and the really shiny stainless steel, which is what we call a high glaze with an almost mirror finish ideal for modern homes. The ring pots in this range are on a huge reduction at present. Our direct buying means you are getting bargain prices everyday, without the need to wait for specials or laim incentives of free bags of cheap potting mix to lure you in. But, along with our clearance, you will save again on our already discounted prices giving you a double wammy with the sale ending on Monday, March 10, at 4pm. This is the Adelaide Cup and Labour Day long weekend in Victoria, so we will be open until 4pm. If you are away we have given you a good week or so beforehand to get

in and grab a good deal. The last of our outdoor furniture will be on sale as the Autumnal weather draws in with over $1000 off travertine and marble outdoor settings, with wicker chairs and timber industrial furniture to clear, along with three piece settings and bar tables and chairs (see website for details). We also have half price on a few ex-demo outdoor settings, so if you have been looking at our wonderful range and not quite bitten the bullet, now is the time to get a great deal on solid quality outdoor furniture. Bar chairs and tables, as well as outdoor couches are also on clearance, with the lovely capri wicker five piece couch setting under $2000. The Tribeca five piece setting in solid cast aluminium is reduced to $999 with the table able to accommodate six chairs with ease if you want to add two more chairs. Chimineas and firepits are all starting to come in for winter and we have great specials on solid, guaranteed Mexican Chimineas (yes, that don’t crack) as well as our top of the line cast iron ones with lifetime warranty. Steer clear of the cheaper copies as they do not tend to last. We

also have a new range of cast iron and steel firepits and wok style planters in various shapes and sizes in readiness for those cooler evenings where it is still clement enough to entertain outside, some even come with cooking grids, or simply throw a few potatoes in the coals and enjoy easy cooking. Our Summer shade tree sale was a great success and for those of you who didn’t get in we have continued some of the sale on advanced ornamental pears, poplar trees and

mop top trees at half price along with selected fruit and citrus trees, silver birch and lipstick maples at only $31.95. So, whatever you are up to this long weekend be sure to hook on the trailer and get in to Gardenarium, The Pot Shop, Limestone Coast Advanced Trees and bag a bargain, instructions on how to find us are on www.gardenarium.com.au. LOCAL Award

for branding

It’s about to pop up on local buses and it’s used by local businesses, and now the ‘Greater Hamilton’ branding is hitting the mark on the national stage after winning an Australiawide award at last Friday night’s Government Communications Awards. Mayor Albert Calvano joined Council CEO Richard Perry, Economic Development Manager Hugh Koch and representatives from icon.pr to accept the award in Melbourne. The Greater Hamilton branding won the Best Communications/ Engagement by a Shire Council, beating Councils from around Australia including Mildura Rural City Council and Wyong Shire Council in New South Wales. “The idea that Greater Hamilton is one place with many possibilities obviously got through to the judges,” Mayor Calvano said. “I would like to thank the entire community who provided input into the design of this campaign. “A special mention should go to fellow Councillors who all got behind this project, and to our CEO Richard Perry and all the Shire staff who worked hard to get local businesses and community groups

on board. “The judges made special mention of the research that went into the brand, and its ability to be used by a variety of stakeholders to better position Hamilton as a strong, vibrant regional centre. “We are about to enter the second stage of this campaign where the brand will have an even stronger presence, particularly in the local community. “I would also like to thank icon.pr, the creative designers behind this campaign. “Hundreds of people from local governments around Australia will go home knowing that Greater Hamilton is open for business and a great place for people to live, work and invest.” Government Communications Australian is a national organisation representing media, communications, marketing, events and public relations professionals working in Local Government across Australia.

The Castec Rural Pioneers have finalised their roster for the 2014 South East Australian Basketball Season with Erik Burdon putting pen to paper last week. Burdon will rejoin his team for his fifth season once his commitments to the Perth Wildcats (NBL) are complete at the end of April. Perth is currently leading the National Basketball League and is hot favourite to take out the championship. Burdon played his 100th game for the Pioneers in 2013 and was recognised in the Pioneers top 25 players since their inception into the national competition at a celebration fo the club’s 25th anniversary last season. Burdon’s signing ensures the core of last season’s playing group will be back on court as the club

looks to go one better than its runner-up finish in the SEABL championship in 2013.Burdon, along with skipper Matt Sutton, has been elevated to almost local status – the duo enduring the tough times before the South Conference success and national play-off opportunity last season. With two pre-season challenge weekend already under their belts and a win-loss of 5-1, the Pioneers head to Frankston this weekend for another preseason competition. The official home and away season tips off at the Icehouse on March 21 against Ballarat. Above - Erik Burdon in action in 2013. Photo courtesy of Gavin Male. Left - Yahl’s Robert Courtney strode to the wicket in Cox Bros action at the weekend with Yahl sitting at 4/81. When he left the field, the score was 8/330 and he had 122 next to his name. Given his innings started with him missing two deliveries that both managed to find parts of his body without protection, it was a heroic effort. His 122 included 18 boundaries and saw his side in the enviable position of setting East Gambier 342 for victory. Full scoreboard page 37.

SOFTBALL Demons Having battled it out all season, the Under 13 teams played off in the first of the 2013/14 season’s grand final at the weekend with Demons taking the silverware seven runs to four. Both teams have been very close all season, and on this occasion it was Demons, lead by Montana Millard with two safe hits, that came out on top. In the match of the day in the top senior grade, Warriors U/17 broke through for a win against Demons A, in convincing fashion, 13 runs to one. The key to this match was batting, which Warriors had in spades, with Yazmin King, Amber Hood and Eleanor McClintock each recording three safe hits against the usually dominant Maggie Breen. Warriors ended the match with 14 safe hits to Demons’ seven, but the key to the victory was in the stringing together of hits, which Demons were unfortunately not able to do all game. Breen was best with the bat for Demons, and was the only multiple hit getter in this fairly one sided battle. The other A/B game went much more to script, with Concordes A cruising to an easy victory over Demons B, 12 runs to one. Demons got off to a good start with the bat, forcing in a run in the first innings on the back

of a great two bagger by Grace Millard, however from there on in Concordes took control and never looked seriously challenged. Best with the bat for Concordes was Allana Jones, with three safe hits from three, and Billie Jones with two. Cody Manning also had two safe hits for Demons, but on this occasion 12 safe hits to five told the tale of the day. The other A/B game saw Concordes B up against Warriors A, and it went as expected, with Warriors coming out on top 10-0. Concordes did well early on, and were only down 3-0 after three innings, but as has been the case throughout the season, were not able to hold in to their opponents for the duration, and Warriors put on

seven runs in their final at bat to pull away. Warriors shared the hits around, with five players getting two apiece. Next week sees the commencement of the senior finals, with both A and B grade seeing the top two teams in each grade battle it out for the chance to go straight into the grand final on March 22 (please note change of date from originally released draw). In the A grade, Warriors take on Demons at 4pm, and it will be intriguing to see whether Demons can recover from a shaky second half of the regular season to find some of the form they had in the earlier rounds. With Maggie Breen on the mound they will have the slight edge pitching wise, however in recent weeks it has been batting that has been their issue and their bigger hitters will really need to find some form and confidence fast if they are going to challenge Warriors in this one. Warriors key strength this year has been the even contribution of all players with the bat, and if they can

get on top of Breen early they will go a long way to winning this match. In the B Grade, Warriors U/17 take on Demons U/17 at 2pm, and it should be a win for the minor premiers. Warriors U/17 have not lost a game against B grade sides this year, and have also had some success against their A grade opposition, and deservedly go into this finals series as unbackable favourites for the title. There are two matches in the C Grade this week (both at 12noon), a qualifying final between minor Premiers Warriors and Wanderers, and an elimination final between the third placed Demons and fourth placed Concordes. Warriors and Wanderes have stood out this year and it will be a big challenge for either Concordes or Demons to try and knock the loser of the qualifying final out of the grand final. Ask 100 people for their definition of an unsung sporting hero and you’re likely to get 100 different answers. Whether these unsung heroes be big or small, professional or amateur, we all have sportsmen and women that we admire and who help us believe that anything is possible. This year, ABC Grandstand has developed a collection of short stories dedicated to all the unsung heroes who deserve to be recognised through the publication of a new book. From household names to bush legends, the inaugural Unsung Sporting Heroes

book recognises the players, teams, volunteers, supporters, parents and officials who have made such a difference to their chosen sport. The book includes contributions from well-known ABC identities Jim Maxwell, Drew Morphett, Stephanie Brantz and Adelaide’s Peter Walsh, as well as a contribution from Mount Gambier freelance journalist and sports writer Adam Blom (right). Blom’s piece on former Australian Boomers and Chicago Bulls basketballer Luc Longley was highly commended by the ABC Grandstand’s short story writing competition

judging panel and he received an invitation to have his story published in the publication. Blom said it was an honour to have his story recognised and then published in Unsung Sporting Heroes. “The opportunity to write a short story on a sportsman I have long admired and respected was something I didn’t want to pass up,” he said. “I didn’t enter the competition to win or to be part of the publication. I just wanted to write why I consider Luc Longley to be an unsung hero of

trophies handed out

Senior Male champion - Scott Waters Max Gregory Trophy – Jack Opperman Max was a very keen cyclist as a young man, commencing competitive cycling while still at Yahl Primary School. He was supported by his father who assisted at all Mount Gambier race meetings. As he developed, Max was selected in 1961 to represent SA as a junior in Tasmania and proceeded to compete at all levels in local and interstate cycling, including a six-day wheel race in Whyalla. He was also supported by Allan Dowdell and the late Lloyd Sparrow during these earlier years. As a senior member of the club, Max was deeply involved in all aspects of the Club’s development, but particularly he relished the opportunity to encourage new club members and to

develop juniors, including supplying, building and maintaining bikes for them if the need arose so that they could compete amongst other local riders. He also mentored many younger riders, some of whom are probably still riding today. He was also one of the local volunteers that assisted in the building of the present velodrome – the project involved many hours of volunteer labour, in addition to the main contractor, to complete the project. Max turned professional prior to 1967. Max represented the club and the SE Region in cycling teams over his many years of active club participation – the club won the SW Association Shield in 1967 when Max was captain. Max won the Casterton 50 in 1985, won the 5 mile and 10 mile Interclub Titles three times as well as many Mt. Gambier track & road championships. He was also placed in the State Road Titles on several occasions. Max’s contribution to the club was recognised by club members and cyclists who formed a Guard of Honour holding bike wheels at his funeral in 1997. Jack was honoured to win the trophy, which is usually presented to a senior rider. It honoured his efforts in being crowned the district champion for the second year running, a State gold medallist and club champion.

Budding Portland school artists are being encouraged to make their mark on Portland’s cancer resource room through a new mural competition. The Glenelg Cancer Information and Support Services room and the cancer link nurse have recently relocated from Otway Street to the Allied Health building at Portland District Health. Now the centre wants to stand out with a mural to decorate the two glass panels on the entrance door and large glass panels on either side of the door. Local secondary schools have been invited to enter up to three designs for the mural with the opportunity to win a $250 prize and have their art on permanent display at the hospital. Cancer Link nurse Elaine Norton said the mural should be bold and graphic but also colourful, fun and welcoming. “We don’t want doom and gloom; we want something that is inviting and positive,” she said. The entries must be lodged before the end of term one and will be judged by a selection committee on their appropriateness, design and description. The winning design will be painted by the winning school. Ms Norton said the competition was not only a way of drawing attention to the centre’s new home but also to raise awareness about cancer. “The lives of many students will have been touched by cancer and this competition will be a good way for them to reflect on how cancer affects families and the community,” she said. Invitations have been sent to local secondary schools to take part in the competition.

motor MOTOR National Mount Gambier will come to life next weekend when the 13th annual Australian Late Model Championship is held at Borderline Speedway. This will be the first time the Australian Late Model Championship has been held in South Australia with a field of nearly forty drivers entering from all five Australian mainland states. All the action gets underway on Thursday with scrutineering followed by a two hour practice session in the afternoon. The Calcutta for the championship will be held that night from 6.30pm at the Mount Gambier Racecourse in the “Winner Function Room”. Four rounds of heat races will be contested over the weekend by each driver with the top sixteen point scorers qualifying direct for the main event. The rest of the field will contest the twenty lap B main with the top four transferring into the main forty lap championship final. Matt Nulty has kindly donated the bonnet

title up for grabs

of his Late Model for people to sign for a $5 donation, with hats and stubby holders also available for purchase, with all proceeds going to the Patzel-Mullan Foundation. The bonnet will be donated back to the foundation to be auctioned off. The Patzel-Mullan Foundation was launched in early 2010. The foundation was formed to help provide the much needed assistance required for the Mount Gambier Hospital Children’s Services. Everyone from the South Australian Late Model Association and Borderline Speedway Club are happy to be supporting this worthy cause. Official Australian Late Model Championship merchandise will be available over the weekend, please feel free to contact Lisa Crimmins on 0438 089 585. Jump on the SALMA website at www.salma.com.au or find them on Facebook. The 2014 Australian Late Model Championship at

Borderline Speedway Mount Gambier South Australia over March 6-8. Be there as the thundering V8 Late Models crown a new Australian champion. Drivers to watch 1: Craig Vosbergen (WA) After being the form driver of last season and this current season, it’s hard to not put Vosbergen as the Australian Title favourite. He finished last season’s Australian Title in the runner-up spot behind American Steve Francis, but is aiming to go one better this season. The one and only time Vosbergen has competed at the Borderline Speedway track was when he contested the 1998 Australian Super Sedan Title. 2: Brad Blake (WA) Blake might have had a few lean recent seasons through injury and some misfortune, but you should never discount a four-time Australian Late Model Title holder. There’s no doubt that Blake is hungry to bounce back to the pointy end of the field on the

national scene by claiming a record fifth Australian Title crown. 3: Warren Oldfield (WA) Oldfield has enjoyed a lot of consistency in recent seasons in Western Australia, but is aiming to take that form to the national scene. With a previous best Australian Title finish of second, Oldfield is going to be amongst the front runners all weekend. Whether that results in a maiden Australian Title victory in Late Models remains to be seen. 4: Darryl Grimson (NSW) One of the most experienced drivers in the field, and his home state’s best chance to claim Australian Title honours, is Grimson. He might not have many runs on the board leading up to the Australian Title, but he shouldn’t be discounted. Come the Australian Title deciding feature race, Grimson will be right up there. 5: Darren Kane (Qld) Despite limited track time in a Late Model, it’s difficult

to leave a driver of the class of Kane out of the leading contenders list. As the country’s leading Super Sedan driver, and there’s no doubting that he will be able to step up come Australian Title time. Kane has run less than a dozen race meetings in Queensland, but the Australian Title is going to be his biggest challenge. 6: Nathan Disney (NSW) The newly crowned NSW Champion is riding a wave of confidence leading into the Australian Title. On his right, Disney can be near unbeatable, so he will be hoping that come the Australian Title weekend, he will be on top of his game. He’s a definite podium contender. 7: Michael Holmes (WA) Consistency is one of Holmes’s strongest attributes, and it’s going to be vital if he wants to perform strongly at the Australian Title. Holmes, who finished on the podium in the 2012 Australian Title, isn’t a

driver to be taken lightly, and he will be aiming for another podium finish. 8: David Robertson (NSW) Robertson is a driver with plenty of speed, but consistency is something that can sometimes let him down. If he can remain consistent throughout the weekend, then there’s no question that he will be right amongst the pointy end of the field come feature race time. 9: Ben Nicastri (NSW) The third generation is quickly earning the reputation as one of the country’s emerging talents. Despite being only 21 years of age and competing up against a

lot of experienced drivers, one of them being his dad, Ross, Nicastri has shown that he has the ability to mix it with the front runners. It would come as no surprise if Nicastri ended the weekend with a podium finish. It’s interesting to note that Nicastri won last season’s South Australian Title at Borderline Speedway. 10: Mat Crimmins (SA) Crimmins has been on top of his game in his home state, and goes into the Australian Title as the host state’s leading driver. Crimmins is capable of mixing it with the front runners on any given night, but if he can finish inside the top five come feature race time, then that’ll be an outstanding result.
