The annual Taste Festival will be an explosion of tastes, continuous
music and activities from the bountiful Limestone Coast region. Held in the

visitors exquisite tastes from around 25 of the region’s award winning wineries, gourmet food producers, musicians and entertainers. The festival will start on Friday, February 7, with the Naracoorte Golf Club’s Taste Ambrose Golf Day, sponsored by Mini Jumbuk and DiGiorgio Family Wines. An exhibition “A Taste of Local Art” will open at the Naracoorte Art Gallery that evening at 6pm and will be open over the weekend. Later on Friday, the Naracoorte North Kindergarten will screen The Croods at an outdoor cinema for families at the Naracoorte Showgrounds. On Saturday, February 8, Festival goers will be able to enjoy the Taste the Limestone Coast Festival itself, from 11am to 7pm in the town squares. Visitors will have the opportunity to taste a wide range of foods and wines while enjoying almost non-stop music along with activities for younger children to help make this a family friendly day. Naracoorte Cup meeting at the racecourse, so people will still be able to “Come for the Taste and stay for the Race”. The organising committee is delighted that all wineries participating in this year’s festival are once again local family wineries. This will certainly highlight the talent of winemakers and the diversity of styles in the outstanding wines and cider made in the region. Participating wineries are DiGiorgio Family Wines, Henry’s Drive Vignerons, Wangolina Station, Morambro Creek Wines, Koonara Wines, Patrick of Coonawarra and Farmer’s Leap Wines. The wineries will be supported by the Kincraig Hotel for those who prefer beer to wine. Among the wide variety of fine foods on offer this year will be local tasting platters, wood fired pizzas, gourmet seafood from Robe, strawberries galore, gourmet sausages, German sausages, Twistto potatoes, kebabs and falafel, crepes, hot meat rolls, cakes biscuits and slices, coffee, milk drinks, soft drinks and water. Wow, what a lot is on offer. Festival patrons are encouraged to taste a few of these perhaps trying something that they have never tasted before
– it’s all part of the “Taste” experience. Entertaining festival patrons this year will be top Adelaide band Rush Hour and local band Reality Bites. They will also be strongly supported by highly talented local performers Christy Wallace, Hoody and Fab and Ann Woodard to keep the music going. This year, Naracoorte Lions will allocate profits from the festival to a major community project, the Naracoorte and District Men’s Shed. The Lions Club is hoping to raise funds to help them to build
their shed to engage older men in the community and to improve both their mental and physical health and well-being.Once again people from all over the Limestone Coast and visitors from surrounding districts are invited to enjoy a great weekend by joining in, drinking responsibly, eating sensibly and being sun safe while they relax and enjoy “The Taste!” Full details of the festival can be found on our website www.thetastefestival. com.au

Advertorial I ODYSSEY VEIN CLINIC
For great legs this summer - treat now
Dr. Emma Nolan and Kerryn Harvey of Odyssey Vein Clinic have been visiting Mount Gambier monthly for more than three years and are, probably, best known for the non surgical treatment of varicose leg veins and cosmetic injectable procedures. ’We tend to find that we are busiest with the leg veins a couple of months prior to summer,” Dr Nolan said. “What people don’t realize is that varicose veins, especially, may take
some months to fade completely and the ideal time to tackle this problem is in the winter months so the legs look good for summer.” Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy (UGS) is a walk in, walk out procedure with no time off work or away from usual activities. Odyssey also offers non surgical facial rejuvenation. “We are finding that the cos-metic side of our business in the Mount is growing,” Dr Nolan explained. “Anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are a great way
to improve and , sometimes eliminate, facial lines ad folds - this is a quick treatment that can be performed in your lunch break.” No GP referral is required for any of the above procedures. For more information visit www:odyssey veinclinic.com.au or contact Kerryn on 0403 965 548. Above - Dr. Emma Nolan and practice manager Kerryn Harvey.

I can’t believe that in the year 2014 I still have to choose between chicken salt and plain salt. What is wrong with our country that I can’t have both of them on my chips? Plain and simple, I think it’s a sign of our times. The faceless men are trying to convince us that having both would be just too much for us. They don’t think we would cope eating chips with two types of salt. They think that us eating something so luxurious and decadent would have us thinking we could have anything; that the world is ours. We the people need to take these kind of risks. When we’re at the fish and chip shop and they ask us if we want chicken or plain salt, we need to start saying that’s not good enough. Go crazy, I want both. Think of the possibilities. We’ve become too cautious, too scared to take a risk, too scared to chase our dreams. If we’re not prepared to take these kind of risks, then we’re dooming ourselves to a
life of averageness. By taking a risk, sure you’re opening yourself to the possibility of almighty falls and failures but you’re also opening yourself to the opportunity of ecstasy and glory. How do you think all of the other great taste delights you enjoy came about? We wouldn’t have steak if a caveman didn’t take the yummy mammoth he’d slaughtered earlier and throw it on the fire that he recently discovered. That was a risk. He could have stuck with the status quo but he
wasn’t prepared to settle. What about the Hawaiian pizza? Who would have thought to combine ham with pineapple on a pizza? They certainly don’t seem like the most logical of elements to combine, but Maree Hawaii took that risk and look where it got her! A pizza named after her enjoyed by millions of people around the world. When was the last time someone came up with something new and exciting like that? Okay, there was that guy who came up with dipping popcorn in chocolate on that reality television show

last year which was truly a magical idea, but where are the other food wizards in modern Australia? I know what you’re thinking. What about eating a balanced diet? What about the food pyramid? Again this is just people trying to control us, to make our lives ordinary. The food pyramid is just a myth. They don’t even teach it in schools anymore. I personally disproved the theory behind it. Think about it. The top of the pyramid, the smallest layer which is meant to indicate you should eat less, is fats and sugars. The supposedly healthier food, meant to be indulged in more, is found in the lower levels. But you can take as many of the lower levels of a pyramid away and you still have a pyramid; as soon as you take away the top level, you do not have a pyramid. So you tell me which level of the pyramid is most important. I want us to start this revolution at the fish and chip shop. Don’t stop at chicken and plain salt. What about the old pineapple fritter? There’s nothing wrong with the safety of cinnamon and sugar but why not explore the possibilities? Free your mind. Spice up the sweetness of the pineapple with some salt, or maybe a squirt of sauce. I know. I’m talking about a revolution where we’re going to take back the world and make people’s heads literally explode in an awakening of amazement. It’s fair to say the heat is definitely getting to me. I think I should drink a bit more water tomorrow. If you have ever dared to have chicken and plain salt on your chips, you’re a visionary so email me at firstname.lastname@example.org

last hurdle for dancing star
A fortnight ago a So You Think You Can Dance Australia promotion
featuring Mount Gambier dancer Sam Malseed started airing and the region was
abuzz with what this meant for the 18 year old talent. The MJ Dance Studio graduate though had to remain tight lipped and while he is now able to share some of his journey thus far, there is certainly still an element of secrecy surrounding his role in the show. But to be able to start sharing his experience thus far has been a relief for the dancer himself, after having to deflect questions from friends, family and complete strangers about the show. What Sam can reveal is that he completed an online personality questionnaire and sent off a DVD showcasing two dances he had performed in a public arena last year, earning an audition spot
from the rumoured 6000 entrants to the reality TV show. That audition was in October, the day after muck up day at school, and so Sam travelled to Sydney to try his luck, for the second time, on a dance reality show. He was successful in earning a spot in the doomed Everybody Dance Now with duo partner Katarina Gajic, but did not get his time to shine before the show was cancelled. The initial audition was a group choreography class and a short solo. “I choreographed my solo the night before,” Sam said. “I was surprisingly calm going into the audition and there was a huge panel of people watching but I felt as calm as I ever have before something like that.” There was no way to judge how he had fared though. Each dancer was briefly thanked and the selection panel moved onto the next potential contestant. “It was quick like that and you really had no way of telling if they were impressed or not,” Sam said. But apparently they were and Sam got the call he had been waiting for - he was into Top 100 Week, an intensive week of choreography classes and performances from which the show’s top 20 dancers, 10 male and 10 female, are selected. “I had to do a lot
more preparation for Top 100 Week,” Sam said. “It was a long week with lots of dancing and not much sleep - we met so many people and had so many performances.” Those familiar with the format of the show would realise, the dancers are tested across a number of genres from lyrical to ballet, from tap to hip hop, from ballroom to jazz and versatility and an ability to learn quickly is key to success. “I had to dance a lot of styles I had
never really done before and it was challenging,” Sam said. “It was a case of bluff it till you make it, fake it till you make it I think they say.” For Sam, knowing he made the Top 100 of the competitive show is already an achievement. “I’ve been told around 6000 people tried out so to make the top 100 is a huge achievement and if that’s where it ends, I have to be proud of that,” Sam said. If he makes the Top 20, Sydney will become his home - in fact regardless
of the outcome of the So You Think experience, Sam will be a Sydneysider in 2014. He is following in the footsteps of his sister Kristi and heading to Brent Street Performing Arts Centre. He was also accepted into respected contemporary school Ev & Bow, where fellow MJ graduate Steph Newton and former MJ star Symiko De Van Der Schueren are studying this year. “I wanted to go where my sister went so I chose Brent Street.” Sam said. “So whatever happens I will be moving to Sydney soon.” Of course last week his priority was the National Showcase in Queensland and on Monday he was involved in a dance off involving the top three ranked performers for Dancer of the Year. Making the top three was a goal the ambitious young performer set himself and he achieved it, in what will be his final National Showcase. The Channel 10 So You Think promo we’ve been watching on our televisions was shot a fortnight before the Top 100 were announced and if Sam was successful in breaking into the Top 20 he will begin shooting the live shows from next month. And obviously if that happens, he will be looking for this region to support him. So You Think You Can Dance Australia works on a similar public voting system to other reality TV talent shows. what makes naracoorte tick Naracoorte’s unsung heroes take centre stage From a Red Cross volunteer to a show ambassador, from a football league to a cooking challenge, Naracoorte Lucindale Council have found plenty to celebrate as it showcases its 2014 Australia Day Award recipients. A citizen of the year, young citizen of the year and community event of the year is allocated in both Naracoorte and Lucindale with the recipients honoured at the Australia Day functions in each town centre. The traditional town square breakfast will again headline Naracoorte’s Australia Day festivities, with breakfast from 7am, entertainment from 7.35am and the official proceedings from 7.55am. Lucindale’s traditional community lunch will be preceded by an 11am official ceremony at the Lucindale Rotunda. Red Cross Transport Service volunteer Margaret Wortley is Naracoorte’s Citizen of the Year. The hard working volunteer has been part of the service since its inception 15
years ago. “She was one of the first people to put her hand up and she’s been involved ever since,” said Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery. “She is an unsung hero who goes to any lengths to help out the community.” Margaret is also an active member of the Naracoorte RSL
Bowling Club and the golf club. The Young Citizen of the Year accolade went the way of Courtney Higgs, adding to her Lions Youth of the Year title early in 2013. The 2013 Naracoorte Show Young Rural Ambassador is an active member of the show committee and she turns her hand to working bees,
stewarding and helping run competitions. cont. opp. page Above - Naracoorte Citizen of the Year Margaret Wortley pictured in her role with the region’s Red Cross Tranpsort Service.

“Courtney is all about encouraging young people to become involved with the Naracoorte Show,” Mayor Vickery said. A student at Naracoorte High School, Courtney is part of the Naracoorte Calisthenics Club and assists with local equestrian events. The headline act of the event was former Masterchef runner-up Callum Hann, who ran workshops with ILC and Naracoorte High School home economics students focusing on cooking vegetables from paddock to plate. “So the program incorporated the students’ community garden work as well,” Mayor Vickery said. cont. page 24

The Annual ‘Coonawarra Vignerons Classic Clash’ Petanque tournament will be held at the piste, in the Coonawarra Park. The ‘Classic Clash’ has become a highlight of the national petanque calendar, with some of Australia’s best players coming from Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and the Limestone Coast to compete in this prestigious event. The tournament is open to all standards of petanque players, and players must register before 9.30am on both days. Spectators are even more welcome, especially to cheer on the locals sides.

Sporting clubs and community groups also went head to head in a cooking challenge and the whole event doubles as an ILC fundraiser that donated proceeds to the Emergency Relief Project that provides food vouchers for the disadvantaged in the
community. CFS volunteer Ian Jenke is Lucindale’s Citizen of the Year, primarily for his selfless CFS work but also for the wide ranging community activities he has a hand in. He is an emergency services officer and relief ambulance driver, a trainer at the Lucindale Football
Club and an enthusiastic member of the golf and basketball community. Ian is also a founding member of the local Rural Watch group. The Young Citizen of the Year is Kelly Ferguson, a young lady with her fingers in a number of pies. She is an integral part of the netball, basketball and sailing fraternities in the town, coaching juniors as well as her own participation. Kelly is also usually front and centre when there is fundraising to be done and has been an active member of the Lucindale Youth Skate Park group, Lucindale Area School year 12 formal committee and is always on hand at the South East Field Days. Kelly is also an active participant in the school’s agriculture faculty, hay carting, preparing steers and on feeding rosters and was part of the town’s Big Day Out competition bid, a proud member of amateur theatre group the Lucindale Players and on the mural committee. In 2013, the KowreeNaracoorte-Tatiara
Football League broke with a long standing tradition and moved its season decider from the usual alternating venues of Bordertown and Naracoorte and entrusted the event with the Lucindale Football and Netball Clubs. “They (the football and netball clubs) certainly proved a small town can easily set up and achieve a great event like grand final day,” Mayor Vickery said. And that’s why it was adjudged the Community Event of the Year. “The grounds were well presented and in great shape, the catering was great and it was just a well organised day,” she said. Australia Day ambassador John Shepherd, of Operation Flinders, will attend both functions and give an address, along with the award presentations. ADVERTORIAL I GARDENARIUM Happy New Year... and hasn’t it been an interesting one. The up and down weather has been a bit of a challenge for most gardeners but on the other hand it has given us plenty of opportunity to get outside and do some outdoor entertaining. So too, have we been given the opportunity to look around the garden and see where we can add some much needed shade from that harsh summer sun we have been having. We always think to winter to plant trees, especially deciduous trees but the opportunity is not there to see exactly what part of the garden and home requires shading. I know I have just contemplated planting some Jacaranda trees on the west side to cut the summer sun on the windows and help cool the rooms on that side. Trees have an amazing ability to be our own air conditioning and studies have shown the cooling effects of lawns and plants in so many ways and trees are amazing at reducing the temperatures. Now is a good time to have a look around and even plant a mature or advanced shade tree. These come in many forms from evergreen, giving all year round shading, to deciduous, where the
Make outdoor entertaining and your garden a priority in 2014
leaves will drop in winter to give added light. Deciduous again, come in many forms, from mop tops, where the size is governed by the grafting and variety, so good for courtyard shade and smaller spaces right throughout, to lightly foliaged trees, such as silver birch, then to larger, heavily foliaged shade trees that can give fantastic shading to large and small areas. We currently grow more than 30 varieties of mop top trees at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees. Most of these are in our Australia day sale, so hurry in as many are half price. Remember, too, that many of the older varieties of larger trees you may have been used to are now available in (dwarf) smaller or narrower versions, allowing you to have your old favourites in smaller situations. Shade trees, hedges and especially fruit trees have been selling well since Christmas and now is a good time to plant as there is the whole growing season ahead of us. Look out for our 2014 Releases of fruit trees and we have an Orchard Starter special on with any four advanced fruit trees for $134.95*. Many of our advanced and semi mature trees have been slashed to half price to make room for more
stock coming through. These include Lipstick Maples, Chinese Elms, Horse Chestnuts, ash, elm and even half price mop top trees. If you are looking to plant a driveway or avenue of trees we have a clearance on ornamental pears, in both the narrow, upright forms as well as more spreading . So, if you are looking for a bargain and some instant sized trees, now is the time to get in as they are selling fast and the sale ends Australia Day. Citrus, avocadoes (in fruit) and even berry fruits can be planted now for crops in late summer and autumn. We have 50% off selected advanced fruit trees already in fruit for that “instant orchard” and $20 off miniature peaches and nectarines, in both yellow and white flesh varieties. All are ideal for pots. Outdoor living is certainly a huge part of our lives at this time of the year and we have had a lots of good days to get the BBQ going. At Gardenarium and The Pot Shop we have endeavoured to bring you all sorts of ideas and products for the outdoor living area. From our huge range of thousands of pots through to our exclusive ranges of imported garden furniture, chimineas, fire pits and much more. Our
new ranges of outdoor furniture have been very popular and boast more styles, colours and materials than ever. Forget those boring glass topped tables and imported Asian hardwoods, which look good in the display and soon crack, split and warp in our hot, dry climate. Several containers of pots have just arrived at The Pot Shop’s Mount Gambier store, with a huge range of glazed pots in new colours, including smoky blue, caramel, coffee and a new purple colour. Terracotta is ever popular and a whole new range at some rather interestingly low prices, at up to 70% off, has just been unpacked. The mighty strength of the Australian dollar is allowing us to sell pots cheaper than five years ago and our outdoor furniture ranges are around $1000 less than last year (see advertisement). New shipments of lightweight pots and troughs, ideal on decking or balconies, boasting the strength of normal concrete and sandstone pots but a lot lighter and easily moved. All concrete statues, ornaments and birdbaths are reduced to clear until Australia Day. There are large square and round tubs that are ideal for
miniature fruit trees and dwarf citrus varieties, as they can last their entire life without transplanting, especially important with citrus trees, who resent root disturbance and we have minimum 25% off citrus, including double grafted citrus. One of our other ranges of popularity is our exclusive Importing of a range of Travertine slate and marble tables that mainly head to the Americas and Europe. The benefits of these tables is their stain resistance, they do not require sealing, can be wiped with a sponge and do not crack, fade or chip like other similar products made up of cement and fibre glass, and at a fraction of the cost. Other differences are they are longer and wider, which is especially important once you have a full table of guests. Extra room down the middle allows for serving bowls, dishes, wines etc without a squeeze, meaning more room for people to eat and relax. Our range of chairs has also been tailored with this in mind, with comfort levels in our wrought metal and cast aluminium ranges astonishing most people who sit on them (without the need for cushions too). These have been especially popular in
seaside locations as they are totally galvanised or aluminium and PVC wicker on aluminium frames then finished in a range of colours plus a clear lacquer coat on top of that. As an Australia Day special we will be discounting many of these along with some ex demo models - get in early, along with Adirondack chairs which come with a free footstool and cushion (while stocks last). Gardenarium and The Pot Shop also carries a wide range of German PVC wicker in several styles and colours all on aluminium frames with a three year warranty. Don’t touch other wickers as they are from China and do not even have a 12 month guarantee. Aluminium, which is corrosion free and light weight, is great for chairs, especially with older
people. These are also ideally suited to coastal areas. Our tiled top tables, solid sandstone tiled top tables, marble topped and new for this year grey marble called ‘Vesuvius range’ has been a huge hit, and being natural stone has veining of browns through as well which will match in with many colour schemes. We still have one eight seater square table and a few rectangular tables in the Roman range to clear all at fantastic prices, with the three metre long banquet table seating 12 - 14 people, a serious entertainers table, in both stone and Aluminium. Remember Australia day is on Sunday this year, so our specials run until then. By Calum Haygarth

Young talent set to take on State’s best The Mount Gambier Lakers are set to take on the State’s best at this weekend’s SA Country Basketball Chgampionships in Adelaide. The women’s team is particularly young but with Sonya Knight at the helm, will certainly have an experienced voice to guide them. Sonia Bawden is the veteran of the group, bringing an incredible work ethic and a willingness to do the hard work inside to the Lakers line-up that will certainly test sides with its athelticism and pace. Georgia Green, Rachael Hines and Brenna McKay bring the athleticism to the floor and their willingness to show no fear and take on opposition defenders will be crucial. Brianna Walters (pictured right) brings smarts and great perimeter shooting, while Malinda Markiewicz will also be a go to player in terms of long range shots. Eilish McKay will also be critical, a tough defender and good finisher, she is one of those players coaches love to have in their team because they willingly
ramp things up with dual signings
The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers have had a big couple of weeks. The club resigned its major naming sponsor Castec Rural Supplies and have also signed its first US import - University of Minnesota alumni Damian Johnson. The 26 year old is 6”7 and will bring athleticism, defense and
the ability to score in a variety of ways. The club hopes he can help them take one step further in securing the 2014 SEABL championship. “I am really excited to have a player of the quality of Damian joinging the Pioneers,” head coach Richard Hill said. “He has performed well for Minnesota at a
high level conference in the NCAA, he had a great season in Japan and a solid season in the NBA Development League, with the Springfield Armour.” Johnson is set to join the squad early next month meaning he should be on hand for the club’s preseason match schedule which starts with the ABA Challenge in Millicent on February 15 and 16.Under Hill, the Pioneers have looked to have a strong team structure with clearly defined roles and no reliance on one or two stars. Hill is confident that Johnson will fit smoothly into that structure. “The Pioneers is all about team and through my discussions with Damian, he will fit into our system,” Hill said. The power forward has previously trialed with the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves prior to playing in Japan for the 2010/11 season and then returning to the NBA Development League. take on whatever role is required. Ebony McDiarmid and Kelly Lockwood round out the squad and it will be invaluable experience for two of the youngest members of the team. The men’s line-up has Chris Mason in charge in a playing coach capacity with Simon and Matthew Berkefeld heading the list. Simon is battling a corked injury from last weekend’s Lakers CBL commitments but should be right for the State titles. Jak Ryan (pictured above) is coming off good form in the CBL, while Joe Ferguson-Lane always leaves everything out on court. Dellon Brown and Matt Parslow bring scoring power and young athelticism to the group, with Mason also hoping Mitch Mott will be released from his Centrals commitments to be part of the title campaign.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY Above - Yahl veteran Phil Walters (centre) made history at the weekend when he played alongside his two sons Harry (left), 17, and Nick (right), 16. It is the first and is rumoured to be the last time the trio will take to the field together. Phil was filling in for Yahl’s Crouch Shield side. Harry and Nick both played Barber Shield together last season but in 2013/14 Yahl was unable to field a side in the top grade. Nick also still plays junior cricket for Yahl in the O’Donoghue Shield. Both boys are allrounders, while Phil, who turns 50 this year, has been a prolific run scorer for the brown caps.
to host State titles
The Mount Gambier Softball League is set to showcase Mount Gambier’s highly regarded Blue Lake Sports Park facilities when it hosts the South Australian Junior Softball Championships next month. Blue Lake Sports Park’s diamonds will become a battleground for the State’s best junior players on Februarfy 15 and 16 with more than 20 teams expected to converge on the top notch facilities
in the girls competition and around five boys teams also challenging for Under 15 & 17 titles. The championships are also an opportunity to catch the eye of State and national selectors, who are always on hand to talent identify the next generation of elite players. With strong support from the Mount Gambier City Council, the Mount Gambier Softball League committee has been working overtime to upgrade
its facilities, including a major renovation of the clubhouse and kitchen facilities earlier this year. Mount Gambier will look to repeat its success of last year, when both the Under 13s and 17s (division two) came away with victories in their respective grand finals. Whilst final teams are yet to be selected, there is plenty of very talented young players to chose from, highlighted by the three Under 17 players that represented South Australia at the recent national championships in Blacktown. Eleanor McClintock and Amber Hood, of Warriors, and Cody Manning of Demons, will look to lead what promises to be a very strong team in the Under 17 division, which will be coached by Tanya Hood and Jenny Burston. Mount Gambier has also nominated what should be a strong Under 13 side, coached by Debbie Breen and Felicity Walker, with standout youngster Imogen Walker set to lead a good mix of the more experienced juniors (playing senior competition each week) with some newcomers to the league this year. Spectators should be treated to some very high quality play, and will
get to experience the carnival atmosphere over the two days of play commencing Saturday morning and concluding with finals late Sunday. If people wish to know further information on the carnival, please visit the facebook page for the Mount Gambier Softball League or contact the league directly on aandjhopgood@bigpond. com. With the three A grade sides taking on B grade or Under 17 opponents at the weekend, the anticipated one sided results emerged from the softball action. Concordes A took on Demon’s Under 17, and the senior side asserted its dominance early, starting the game with nine runs in the first two innings and never looking back from there. Demons toiled hard in the field, but it was not enough to control the hitting of the more experienced Concordes side, who were lead with the bat by Alli Wilson and Billie Jones, both with two from three safehits. Concordes switched some field placings as the game went on, and the Demons batters did well to score four runs in the later stages of the game, with a great two bagger from Grace Millard and safe hits to Cody Manning, Brenda Scott and Monica Payne the highlights.
Ultimately though Concordes dominated this match from start to finish and ran away winners 18 runs to 4. Warriors A took on Concordes B and were held scoreless until the third innings. Concordes were not able to put anything on the board themselves though, and Warriors broke the deadlock with six runs on as many safehits. They then put on a further four runs in the fourth, to effectively put the game out of Concordes reach. Concordes were unable to get a handle on the pitching of Warriors, with Kristy Chuck getting their only safe hit of the day. Whilst it was a comfortable win for Warriors, Concordes B will take a lot out of two very tight opening innings and a virtually error free performance in the field against high quality opposition. In the other A/B clash, Demons A
took on Warriors Under 17, missing star pitcher Maggie Breen, who is currently in Canberra representing South Australia at the national Under 19 championships. Demons however made it clear from the start that they intended to win without their ace, and a lead off three bagger by Cody Manning, followed by a double by Charity Selleck put them on the board straight away. Warriors answered in turn, with safe hits to Georgia Hood and Eleanor McClintock meaning the score was three all after an exciting first innings. From this point on it was a tightly contested affair, with the scores staying locked until a three bagger from Hood and a double from Jenna Burston gave Warriors a slender 4-3 lead. Demons, however, would not be denied, and proceeded to score two runs in the fourth
and a game breaking five runs in the fifth to take the game away from Warriors 10 runs to 6. The stand out performer with the bat for the match was Cody Manning of Demons, with two doubles and two triples from her four at bats. For Warriors Nikki Howard had three safe hits from three. There will be no matches next week due to the Australia Day weekend. Results A/B Grade Warriors A 10 (F. Walker 2; T. Hood, E. McClintock, L. Bruggemann, N. Howard, T. Moretti, G. Hood, J. COUNTRY BASKETBALL LEAGUE SOUTH WEST CONFERENCE - MEN Lakers 82 (J. Ryan 23; S. Berekfeld 21; M. Berkefeld 11) d Horsham Hornets 78 (T. Pickert 36; T. Friend 15; J. Schwarz 10) Horsham was sitting at 8-1 when the Lakers headed to the Hornets home pine and by half time the visitors had secured a 17 point buffer. A slight drop in intensity and an injury to Simon Berkefeld saw the Hornets fight back in the second half but the Lakers held on for a four point victory. The win didn’t change the fact the defending champions will finish fourth but was a good confidence builder for the side ahead of the play-offs in a fortnight’s time. This weekend’s matches will decide who the Lakers opponent will be with Horsham, Warrnambool and Colac all in the running for top spot - and a semi final against the Lakers.

STARS OF THE WEEK There were some standout performances in Mount Gambier & District Cricket action at the weekend with 7/52 from Alex Hentschke from a marathon 30 overs wasn’t enough to secure victory for South Gambier in its Barber Shield clash with West - an unbeaten 124 from veteran Jason McCrae led the Roos to victory over the reigning champions. McCrae hit 15 fours and cleared the boundary three times in what was an entertaining knock. And after a drought of big scores in Barber Shield action, this weekend saw two century makers with another experienced campaigner North’s Michael Johnston putting together a classy knock of 118 in his side’s demolaition of Penola. And the stunning performances weren’t restricted to senior ranks with O’Donoghue Shield player Kane Livingston (East Gambier) claiming a hat trick in his side’s 78 run victory. Kane finished with 3/9 with his hat trick spread over two overs. The week’s Twenty20 competition also produced some highlights with North’s Alex Bowd took 5/15 from 3.3overs, including the final two wickets from consecutive deliveries. Pictured - Jason McCrae on his way to a swashbuckling, unbeaten 124 at Malseed Park on Saturday.

Eight junior cyclists from the Mount Gambier Cycling & Triathlon Club recently competed at the 2014 Cylcing SA Junior Track Championships in Adelaide. The championships ran over two days in the indoor arena The Superdrome. Youngsters Harry Opperman and Tess Wight lined up in the participation division of under 11, meaning regardless of placings, all riders received medals of encouragement. Four riders - Jack Opperman, Amy Wight, Pru Riddoch and Brayden Burston - competed in their final year of under 13 with Opperman, Burst and Wight venturing to under 15 by the end of the year. This was Riddoch’s second attempt at riding on the boards with Brayden’s maiden ride on such a surface. Luke Wight and Jack Patzel entered in the senior division of the championships with the hope that results enable them to gain State selection in the junior team. If successful they will compete in Sydney in February. For Jack it would be consecutive State team selections while Luke is gunning for his first time in the tri-colours.
