COLLECTED STUPIDITY

Robbie’s Christmas list by Robbie Tansel

Until December 31 - ELIZA PIRO - LOCAL IMAGES, PENOLA Influenced by the rich and colourful tapestries and textiles of India, Eliza Piro’s artwork is bold, lively and beautiful. Predominantly about nature, these pieces feature elephants, birds, fish, flowers and trees, comprising a vast array of vibrant colours and patterns. Her favourite subjects convey messages of hope and happiness. Trees symbolise life while the animals, particularly birds, signify freedom and peace.

As I think many of you will have already picked up over the last few years, I’m not a big fan of the Christmas season. I won’t get too far into the many reasons because they’re none of your business. I’ve decided though that if I put a few basic rules in place for those that come in contact with me, maybe I can get some enjoyment out of this time of the year. So here goes… 1. Just because it’s December doesn’t mean everything has to be about Christmas. There is a world outside Christmas songs, Christmas outfits, Christmas music and red and green clothes. The world goes on. 2 It is much more enjoyable receiving presents than giving them. People who tell you otherwise are just saying that so they seem like nicer people. When they say, “I love seeing the look of joy on their face,” they’re generally lying to themselves as much as everyone else. Giving someone a gift means you gave your hard earned money to someone who probably didn’t earn it.

Lifestyle1.net - 006

3 It is only more fun getting presents though if they’re good presents. Lame presents just create stress in your life. Should you regift them? Should you just try to return them to a store without a receipt? Is there any room in the back of a cupboard somewhere for this crap? Decisions, decisions, decisions. For the benefit of my Kris Kringle, socks are always a good present. There is nothing in the world that makes you feel more like you are rich than a new pair of socks. 4. Always open the card before the present. Then you know who to blame the upcoming lame gift on. 5. Christmas isn’t all about

presents. It’s about food too. This is definitely the second most important feature of Christmas. For those who will be catering for my Christmas needs though, it’s important you get it right. Pudding is particularly important and should be served with money wrapped in alfoil. I think that tradition started at the Last Supper or something. 6. As you may know, Christmas began as a Christian celebration commemorating the birth of Jesus. Whether you’re Christian or not you should know a little bit about that as far as I’m concerned. Ignorance is never cool, but especially not at Christmas. 7. Get someone else to put up your Christmas tree. There are people who don’t

like putting Christmas trees up and people who love putting Christmas trees up (future asylum dwellers). They love doing it so why put yourself through it? 8. Alcohol is not the answer. Unfortunately you do have to see your family. Chances are it’s the only time a year you’ll see them and it’s character building to go through it sober. Apart from that, we really don’t need to go through any of those negative things that occasionally come up with alcohol (car accidents, completely understandable violence against family members). 9. Linked to rule 8, I’ve noticed there are quite a few police in Mount Gambier leading into the Christmas season. If you’re one of those people who think that it’s just revenue raising, let’s try to stick it to them and be so well behaved they go back to Adelaide empty handed. If you’re one of those people who realise the sacrifices all our emergency services make at this time of the year and they’re just trying to keep us all safe, let’s try to make this period so boring and well behaved that the only Christmas officer needed on duty is the one who has to be stationed at the Tansel family Christmas lunch every year. 10. Don’t feel any pressure to invite your partner to your work Christmas show. I’m especially talking to you, Donna. A night of listening to you talk shop to a bunch of people I barely know, whilst at the same time trying to somehow make a connection with lame small talk to your workmates’ partners who I only see once a year is not my idea of a good night. If you’d like to suggest some more necessary Christmas rules email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

windfall for cancer centre project

Southern Grampians Shire Council will contribute $90,000 towards an appeal to establish a regional integrated cancer centre in

the south west. Councillors last week resolved to make the donation to the Peter’s Project, a charitable trust seeking to establish

the treatment centre in Warrnambool. Mayor Albert Calvano said getting better cancer treatment was a priority for the region. “This

is a top priority project for the Great South Coast Group, which includes Southern Grampians Shire. “The Peter’s Project team briefed our Councillors last month and asked for a contribution towards the centre,” he said. “About 40% of the Southern Grampians Shire population is aged over 50, so getting better health services is essential for our area. “Speaking from personal experience, I know how difficult it can be to be told you need to travel to Melbourne, Geelong or Ballarat to get treatment. “Our staff at Western District Health Service do a fantastic job in diagnosing and caring for people, and this facility will mean residents will be able to get radiotherapy treatment closer to their families and friends without the stress of having to travel long distances.”

Western District Health Service chief xxecutive officer Jim Fletcher said the establishment of a Cancer Centre in the South West was essential to improve access to radiation oncology for the community and reduce the travel burden for patients and carers. “For these reasons Western District Health Service had strongly supported the Peter’s Project submission for Government and

and the Moyne, Glenelg and Corangamite Shire Councils have also contributed towards Peter’s Project. following the positive recovery and recuperation of injured building maintenance officer. He sustained a debilitating back injury whilst carrying out his duties at the Penola Swimming Pool in December 2012. In the ensuing months he endured immense pain and incapacitation which resulted in the need for spinal surgery which was performed in early 2013. Council and the LGAWCS supported him throughout his recovery and with assistance from management and his colleagues, including Council’s WHS & risk management officer, he was able to maintain a positive outlook and exercise regime. This saw him return to work in a restricted capacity in April this year. His Return to Work plan progressed efficiently and he was able to return to full duties in August. Council has also effectively developed a mechanism and procedures to eliminate the manual handling task that resulted in his original injury. The award, which included a $5000 cheque, was accepted on behalf of council by chief executive officer Peter Harriott. Mr Harriott said council had supported this employee in every way possible and it has been fantastic to see his recovery and eventual return to work go so smoothly. The prize money will be used to fund the introduction of additional lifting devices to further reduce manual handling in the day to day activities of council’s workforce.

The countdown is on until the World Series Sprintcar series visits the Borderline Speedway on December 28 and already this series is ramping up to be one of the most hotly contested in the 26 year history of Australia’s most prominent sprintcar competition. The 11 drivers who have already signed on to be contracted drivers for the series reads like the who’s who of the winged wonders in Australia. On top of the list of entrants is Mount Gambier’s own Steve Lines,

Series Sprintcar roadshow set to his town

who in pre-World Series Sprintcar competition has proved to be the man to beat by taking out the prestigious Battle of the Bridge, at Murray Bridge Speedway, and all three rounds of the SRA Sprintcar series in which he has been entered. James McFadden (pictured below) is a driver not to be overlooked as he has won the World Series Sprintcar title in the past two seasons and this season has already proved to be consistent, although not grabbing any

major victories thus far. The shock signing for the series is the emergence of Brooke Tatnell taking the seat in the Krikkie Motorsports Cool chassis, as this car was originally to be driven by Californian Tim Kaeding but a change by Kaeding’s US team meant he wasn’t able to commit to the full series. Tatnell, in his second drive back with the Bunbury based team netted him a win in the West Australian Sprintcar Championship at the Perth Motorplex on December 7.

The American presence in the series will be left to frequent Australian visitor Shane Stewart, aboard the Monte Motorsports Maxim, who this past American season came away with the Knoxville 360 Nationals, along with several other feature wins. Adelaide based hotshoe Luke Dillon is another driver not to be overlooked as he scored a feature win at Bunbury Speedway, beating home Tatnell, to take out the 30 lap feature. Two other South Australians are set to follow the series with Bordertown’s Dylan Jenkin and Strathalbyn’s Daniel Pestka, who certainly has the pace to mix it with the other drivers and could surprise a lot of people this year. There will also be a strong family flavour to this year’s World Series Sprintcar with the father-son combination of Garry and Jordyn Brazier signing up to do the whole tour. Jordyn is still finding his feet driving the 410 powered cars but father Garry is a multiple Australian champion and multiple feature winner at many venues across the country. The last two contracted drivers for the series are Warrnambool based driver Jamie Veal whose nickname “The Real Deal” says it all about this hard charger and Jackson Delmont, who hails from the country New South Wales town of Young. The members of the Borderline Speedway have been hard at work over the off season with a new format to the pit area to make it easier for the large transporters to get in and out. The pits have also been extended to allow for greater capacity for supporting classes and allow put crews greater area to work on their cars. There are two rounds of the World Series Sprintcar series prior to the December 28 meeting at the Borderline Speedway with Adelaide’s Speedway City (December 26) and Murray Bridge Speedway (December 27). After the Borderline round the series continues to Geelong’s Avalon Raceway (December 30) and Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway (January 1) which is the end of the battle within the battle – Speed Week. There are 12 rounds in all for the 2013/14 World Series Sprintcar series. Photo courtesy of Steve Rice.

the parkrun revolution

Mount Gambier is the latest city to get swept up by the worldwide parkrun craze; a free five kilometre timed run every Saturday

morning in a local park run by passionate volunteers and open to anyone. Mount Gambier hosted the city’s first parkrun

on December 7 with 72 runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels completing the 5km timed course. Mount Gambier

parkrun is the 56th in Australia and with new events popping up literally each week the growth for parkrun seemingly has no boundaries. Globally, there are more than 350 parkrun events worldwide with more than 700,000 registered members. Mount Gambier event organiser Phil Ackland said 72 runners completed the course in Saturday’s event and was confident more would get on board as word spread throughout the community. “It was pleasing to see runners of all ages and abilities come down and participate in their first parkrun event. I’m excited to be a part of it and I know this weekly event will continue to grow because it offers the local

community the chance to come together on a regular basis and get physically active in a safe and friendly social environment,” Mr Ackland said. Founded by Brit, Paul SintonHewitt, parkrun began its journey in 2004 with just 13 runners in a suburban area of London called Teddington. The response was overwhelming and what started as a bunch of mates running a weekly 5km timed running event quickly grew into something much bigger. Australian Tim Oberg was based in London for nine years and was immediately captivated by the emergence of parkrun. He sought out and met with founder, Paul Sinton-Hewitt to pitch in the idea of taking

parkrun ‘Down Under’ and he hasn’t looked back since. “I knew parkrun had potential from the outset because it offers the local community, male or female, young or old, the chance to come together on a regular basis and get physically active in a safe and friendly

social environment,” Mr Oberg said. “Our growth in Australia to date has been very pleasing with 56 events and 70,000 members however this is just the beginning. It might sound overly ambitious but by the end of 2014 I’m hoping to have 150 events and 200,000 members, making parkrun one of the largest and most influential community organisations in the country. “Cost is a massive barrier for people to participate in sport and with parkrun our runners will always run for free thanks to the wonderful support from our sponsors, adidas, Stockland and Suncorp Bank. Without their support parkrun simply couldn’t survive.” Adidas marketing manager Sara Brettig said adidas is excited to be partnering with parkrun Australia. “We see enormous potential in the program and we are proud to support more Australian’s getting healthy and active through a free weekly timed running event,” she said. The key to parkrun’s success is the timing technology. Runners register online and then print a barcode which is scanned at the end of each run and matched with the runner’s finishing time. All the results are posted online later that day so runners can compare their performance with their friends and against previous times. The Mount Gambier parkrun is free to enter and starts at 8am every Saturday. Last week around 30 members of the automotive industry, staff from Mount Gambier High School, TAFE lecturers, Skill Centre students and other Limestone Coast representatives gathered for a fully cooked breakfast organised by the Mount Gambier High School food and hospitality staff. The breakfast was an opportunity to celebrate the ongoing success of the centre and for students and staff working in the centre to thank industry for their support throughout 2013. Barry Maney Group service development coordinator and Automotive Industry Group - South East chairmanTravis Fatchen said the South East Automotive Skills Centre located at the Mount Gambier High School had been a great training ground for young and enthusiastic students looking at forging a career in the Automotive Industry. “Since the centre’s inception, we have employed many students who have come through the automotive program; this has made our life easier having a group of likeminded students to choose from,” Mr Fatchen said. “Each year the quality of the student gets better and with industry looking for students in Year 11 or 12, and enforcing the importance of getting good school grades, this has definitely raised the standards. “It is great to see the continued support from local businesses and training providers, for what is a crucial part of our businesses.” This year, the breakfast was fortunate to have Auto Skills Australia workforce development advisor John Scott. in attendance. He provided an overview of the National Workforce Development Fund and how it could potentially benefit the automotive industry. Mr Scott also highlighted that effective workforce development builds business capacity in a structured and planned way by identifying and putting in place strategies to maintain a skilled and progressive workforce. “The initiative is designed to link employers and industries to funding for whole of workforce planning and development,” he said. A special presentation was made to Mount Gambier High School principal Peter McKay, who after five years is moving back to Adelaide. Cummins South Pacific branch manager Leigh Newton spoke on behalf of

and education sector partnership continues to thrive the industry and thanked Peter for continuing to foster and support this vocational education program by taking a special interest and, in particular, engaging and fostering industry support. “We will miss him and wish him well in his future,” Mr Newton said. With the continuation of the Skills for All Training guarantee for SACE students (TGSS) there has been a shift in the outcomes for students. Previously students completed Certificate I in Automotive, but now with the support and partnership of the local TAFE, students are now undertaking Certificate II in Automotive over two years, and gaining SACE accreditation at Stage 1 and 2. This year is the first time students have completed this two year program. TAFE SA Senior Automotive Lecturer Shane Thompson said he had the pleasure of being involved with the South East Automotive Skill Centre since its inception. “Since that time I have seen many students benefit from their introduction to automotive at the skill centre, progressing

A number will be continuing on into their second year of studies in 2014 and some will transition to TAFE SA to continue their studies. Group Training Employment general manager Brenton Lewis said he had been involved with the South East

local story Noske returned as health chief Mike Noske has returned for a third term as president of Portland District Health (PDH) with plans to continue building a strong patient outcome focussed service. Mr Noske said PDH was placing more emphasis on customer feedback as it strives to improve patient care and meet local needs. PDH is also striving to build the involvement of patients and their families in their treatment plans. The development of PDH’s consumer advisory committee is a key plank to the strategy and Mr Noske urged local residents to voice their opinions to the committee or to management. “The efforts of our executive and, in particular board member Anita Rank, in working with the community advisory committee have been important in improving the health service’s connection to the community,” he said. The hospital is also continuing to focus on filling workforce gaps. “Workforce planning is a high priority,” Mr Noske said. “We would like ongoing discussions with all local GP clinics when vacancies are being filled with the goal of employing doctors with the procedural skills Portland needs to bring back more services to the region,” he said. “For example, we are still working towards offering a full birthing program. Having more GPs with obstetrics or anaesthetics qualifications working in local clinics would be a huge step towards making that happen.” Mr Noske said PDH also aimed to continue improving its financial performance. “If we get the workforce and the services right for the community, the financial viability will follow,” he said. Mr Noske said he was pleased to take on a third term as president. “I am happy to be still doing the job. We have made a lot of headway in recent years but it is a work in progress in getting the health service to the point where we are safely delivering the full range of services expected in Portland.” Ray Gilby has been re-elected as senior vice-president and Jim Cooper is the new junior vice president.

LOCAL Personal There is nothing like personal experience to motivate people to go above and beyond for a good cause and it is personal experience that has brought together a team of six men from this region, Adelaide and Sydney to participate in the Murray Meander - a prostate and breast cancer awareness and fundraising campaign that is in its third year. Locally based prostate cancer survivors Graham Hinze, Doug Redman, Des Hinton and Malcolm Porter will be joined by former local Geoff Berkin, who now lives in

experience drives charity boat challenge

Adelaide and the CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Dr Anthony Lowe, from Sydney. “I submitted a story to a prostate magazine about our plans to enter the Murray Meander and Dr Lowe saw it and contacted me and asked if we had a spare spot - he wanted to be part of our team,” Graham Hinze said. “Obviously that’s great not just for our team but for the profile of the event and the publicity it will generate.” The 2014 Murray Meander leaves Mildura on February 21 and finished in Goolwa on

March 1. Last year, 29 teams took to the Murray River and organisers have placed a cap of 40 teams for the 2014 event. Set to be known as the Swampy Brave Hearts, inspired in no small part by the donation, from Swampys Leisure Sales, in Naracoorte, of a suitable boat, trailer and required safety equipment, the six man team has to pay a $3000 entry fee with fundraising efforts to add to that tally. The entry fee basically covers such expenses as camping fees, a river guide, breakfast and dinners, promotional

attire and the like. “We have decided for our team everyone will pay $1000 to be involved and that should help with fuel and support vehicle costs and each day’s lunch,” Graham said. The Swampys Brave Hearts are selling tickets to the major raffle run by the Murray Meander organisers and have also had a couple of small fundraisers for their own tally. The team was also presented a $500 donation from the Penola Lions Club last week. This Sunday, the team is continuing its fundraising effort with a sausage sizzle at Bunnings Mount Gambier from 9.30am-3pm. Anyone interested in assisting in a volunteer capacity should contact Graham Hinze on (08)8737 2779. The team will also be running a couple of smaller raffles on the day, including a raffle for Scott’s fuel vouchers that have also been donated to the cause. The Murray Meander raises funds for oncology nurses for prostate cancer, with the breast cancer funds providing free accommodation for sufferers to enjoy some time away at a retreat.

Bill Davis Shield handed out

DEMONS OFF THE BOIL AS WARRIORS ASSERT AUTHORITY The A Grade game of the round this week was expected to produce a close encounter between two evenly matched sides, but Warriors put that theory to rest in an upset one sided victory, nine runs to one. Warriors got off to the best start possible, batting through their line up and putting five runs on the board in the first innings, primarily due to a number of fielding errors by Demons. They then repeated the dose in the second innings, putting a further four runs on the board to skip out to a 9-0 lead before Demons could get anything going with the bat. Demons only run came from an error by Warriors, and from that point on Warriors limited Demons to a handful of hits and pitcher Eleanor McClintock had control with six strike outs for the victors. Best with the bat for Warriors were Tanya Hood, Nikki Howard and Tori Koop, all getting two safe hits. Belinda Scott and Charity Selleck managed two hits each for Demons. This result breaks the A grade competition wide open, with Demons all of a sudden going from undefeated to two losses in two weeks, making the rest of the season a tantalising race to the finals in mid March. In the other A/B match, it was a very close encounter between Warriors Under 17 and a somewhat depleted Concordes A side, who had three regular starters away. Concordes got on the board first though, scoring three runs in the third innings from back to back safe hits by Jo Hart, Em Hart, Allana Jones and Sam Brown. It didn’t take Warriors long to respond however, and scored three of their own on a home run to Eleanor McClintock. It stayed three all til the last at bat, where Warriors managed to string together a three bagger by Taylor Wilsmore and a double to Maddie Hann to break the deadlock and come out victors against a plucky Concordes side. It was another good win by the

Warriors youngsters, however Concordes would take quite a bit from the game as they try to inch ever closer to that elusive victory over the blue and white this season. In the remaining A/B grade clash, Concordes B and Demons Under 17 continued their trend of trading victories, this time with Concordes coming out on top 13 - 3. Concordes got off to a terrific start, scoring five runs from four safe hits to put Demons on the back foot from the get go. Demons responded with two runs of their own, but that was it until their final at bat when they added a single run. Converseley Concordes scored runs in every innings, lead by Marie Pollock with three safe hits and Chenee McGilvray with three safe hits including a home run. NORTH WIN NAILBITER IN ONE DAY CUP FINAL In the end it was a catch from Dylan Silvy that ended South Gambier’s bid for back to back One Day Cup titles. South tailender Nick Cruise needed two to tie and three to win from the final ball of the match and had to throw everything at it - he did - and after some average outfielding from the Tiges earlier in the clash, dropping the dangerous Alex Hentschke twice, it was a critical catch that saw North victorious by two runs. North’s 163 was built on the back of a stunning 84 from Michael Johnston - grinding out the early overs when scoring was difficult and opening the shoulders when he was set to ensure his bowlers had a strong target to defend. South also started early but when Hentschke joined Somerfield, the big hitting started and the

SWIM SURVIVAL PROGRAMME

January 6-8 & 13-15 Maroons looked on target. North then fought its way back into the contest, removing the dangerous duo, and looked like cruising to victory until Dillon O’Neil threw the day for an important 16 and Robbie Drenthen turned back the clock to his days of opening one day matches for West Gambier and got the defending champions back int the contest with a quickfire 18 that included an entertaining ramp shot and

a six that ended up right across the highway and took some time to retrieve the ball. HIs wicket had North back in the box seat but the big hitting Dewain Barrett cleared the boundary as well to keep South in the contest but in the end it was a bridge too far. Far left - South spearhead Alex Hentschke kept things tight early.

Above - The victorious North Gambier one day cup team with first year skipper Tim Young holding on tightly to the trophy. The club also picked up $500 for its efforts. Below - Dylan Silvy looks to lift the scoring rate during the One Day Cup final.
